It's Sunday night, and I've got a few fun things to share with you! Which is a small miracle because this past week was rough. Grateful for friends, stupid amounts of tea, and this community. 💛

I'm not sharing a ton of writing today because chapter 1 of my deniall fic will drop tomorrow. This has been a blast to write, and I'm so excited to start posting. We've got a title: more than a footnote.

Here are two short snippets, Niall POV:

Dev has snatched my textbook away, and he takes a few steps back until he’s leaning against the side of my bed, homework held hostage against his chest. He taps his fingers against the book and smirks at me. His fingernails are painted a deep navy today, I notice distractedly. I notice it like one might note a passing cloud formation. It’s there, it’s pretty, it’ll change by tomorrow.

“Wistful, you say?” “Fucking moony, Niall.” “Think he’ll be at dinner tonight? We can ask him about it.” “Oh,” Dev says, and leans towards me until I can smell his warm, spicy cologne, his dark eyes a scheming fire. “I have a much better idea.”

31 Days of Horror Recs: What we leave behind and what other people leave behind echo all around us

The Night House is one of those movies that really plays with the idea of space. About the empty spaces left behind when a loved one dies. About how those empty places can feel like a physical presence. About finding out that there's a huge gulf between the person you knew and the person they actually were. About how empty spaces are just waiting to be filled and, if we're not careful, they will fill with only the bad, leaving no room for anything good.

Bonus points for how complicated the main character's feelings are when it comes to her loss. She wields her grief and anger like a piece of broken glass, cutting those around her but injuring herself far worse than anyone else.

Synopsis: Reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, a woman begins to uncover her deceased husband's disturbing secrets in the lakeside home that he built for them.

So, there I was, minding my own business, when Pinterest decided to draw my attention to THESE:

I WANT THEM SO BAD. However, I have made the responsible, adult decision not to get them because I don't have any more space on my shelves need them. I don't. I don't need them, really.

REALLY.

But that cannot and will not stop me from gushing over the mythological creatures they feature, so here we are.

First up, this cutie.

A pretty easy one, as it's just a nine-tailed fox. Here it's labeled as Jiu Wei Hu, but it's also called the Huli Jing. Known in Japan as the kyuubi or youko and Korea as the gumiho, this little guy shows up all over East Asia. Honestly foxes could take up their own post several times over, so I'll leave it here for now.

Next up, the chonker!

Once again, this little guy has another name. Here called Di Jiang, I am far more familiar with him as Hundun, a primordial chaos god that has a lot to do with the founding of the universe. As you can see, he look a little.... wierd. For starters, he has no face. In fact one of his more famous myths has to do with exactly that. See, Hundun was just chilling in the center of the world when 2 gods started to visit him. They felt really bad for Hundun, not having a face and all, so they decided to 'help' him by carving holes into his flesh. The idea was that he would be able to see, hear, eat and breathe with them, but after the seventh hole Hundun died. Looks like cutting holes into people to reorganize their biology can have unforseen medical consequences, what a surprise.

Wen Yao was pretty hard to get any info on, but from what I can tell it was a carp with wings (possibly on the back of the model) and was an omen of good harvest, hence the rice.

Next.

When I first saw this one, I thought it might be a pair of fenghuang (Chinese pheonixes), as they also often come in male/female pairs, but it's actually a different creature entirely. The Man Man, also called the Jian Jian or Bi Yi Niao are a pair of birds that resemble pheasants, except they only have one eye and one wing each. They are very romantic figures, with the obvious symbolism of a person's partner completing them. Awwww.

31 Days of Horror Recs: Until the end of time I'll fight people about the fact that this isn't a bad movie, it's a parody

That's right, we're talking about Jason X, y'all. (Also known as Friday the 13th #10 for anyone who doesn't know because, yes, they made 10 Friday the 13th movies.) If you've been here for a bit you might have heard this before but I keep seeing people try to take this movie seriously and it's slowly killing me. I mean, the joke about Jason is that he can always magically sense when teenagers are having sex, right? In this one, scenes of people having sex is straight up interspersed with snippets of him coming back to life. Teenagers having sex literally brought him back to life! How can anyone attempt to take this movie seriously?!?!?

Honestly, if you like slashers and you want to see a great parody of them, Friday the 13th actually has one as part of the canon and it has a grand time making fun of its own tropes. Highly recommended for slasher fans and for people who just want to watch something dumb and fun because, let's be honest, that's what Friday the 13th had basically become and this movie leans all the way into that.

Synopsis: In a desperate last attempt to stop Jason Vorhees, he is cryogenically frozen and forgotten. However, thousands of years later after people have left Earth behind they come back to look for relics from the past. They find Jason.

Sorry, Tumblr has a 10 image limit, so I had to split this into 2 posts. Back to the cute figures I don't need and will not buy like the responsible adult I am!

Bingfeng is kinda like if two pigs got smooshed together, booty first. Apparently two heads make it twice as stubborn (talk about boar headed, am I right?).

A floofy little kitty, so cute! Though more often it's compared to a fox or a ferret, it's 100% adorable. In fact, it's considered to be a great pet as just being with it can ease all worries (as real cat owners can affirm).

Next.

No, this is not the birb form of Erlang Shen, though it does have his third eye. Looking mostly like a normal owl except for the extra eye and sounding like a deer for some reason, this little guy was more likely to end up on your plate than as a pet. Apparently eating this cutie could cure certain illnesses, but the guilt you feel will be forever.

Next!

A multi-eared monkey? This seems familiar... but no, this is not Liu'er Mihou, the Six Eared Macaque from JttW, but an entirely different simian with extra hearing holes. This is Chang You, and I couldn't find much about him either. All I could get was that he lives on a mountain (also named Chang You, confusingly), sounded like a person singing, and was an omen of floods in the area, hence the water. He has some overlap with Wuzhiqi, another flood-associated primate, though they don't seem to be related. Perhaps in another sh*tpost....

Next!

Last but not least, Tao Tie! He's actually part of a set with Hundun that I'll talk about some other time that parallels the 4(5) Guardian Beasts called the 4 Fiends. This guy eats everything. The only thing that kept him from eating the whole world was accidentally eating itself!

Whew.

I feel better now, and I totally still don't need these figures at all. Nope, I don't need them one bit!

Oh boy, where do I begin? Um…

Honestly, I tell people that they are one of my absolute favourite book series of all time, up there with Outlander, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter, and most people who know me will get it 😉. The Hunger Games is obviously a dystopian society, so that will appeal more to a certain demographic than to others perhaps, but the sheer quality of the storytelling goes far beyond any shoeboxed tropes or labels.

These books are just incredible, and I honestly have no more better way to describe them.
