Tiny Woman, Big Gorilla (an Overwatch sitcom pitch)

Another entry for Doc's shamash contest. The prompt was: You get all the rights to adapt a piece of media that has never received a television show (so, no Sailor Moon, for example, but movies are allowed) INTO a television show. Tell me about your vision! How many seasons? Most importantly to noncompliant bitches who are me: What are you tweaking from the source?

So, I want to say Overwatch based on your fics but that feels too easy so let's take this in a completely weird opposite direction: a sitcom. I'm gonna call it… Tiny Woman, Big Gorilla.

Obviously, the two main characters are Winston and Lena. (Other OW characters can also be there.) They're roommates, of course. And it's all about their lives in London and the friends and enemies they make along away. Except there's no superhero stuff so this is just, like, Lena slept with Amélie who works at her favorite pastry shop (French, of course) and now Lena can't get her absolute favorite desert without dealing with their absolute nightmare of a breakup and her entire world is ending. (And, yes, Amélie still gives off assassin vibes which is a very strange vibe to get from the person who's helping you pick out which flavor of macaron to get.)

Every time people start talking too loudly about Lena being not-a-lesbian a particularly gay episode will come out. (Plus side to sitcoms? Everything resets so I can literally hold these episodes in reserve.)

People are constantly clamoring about whether or not Winston will get a relationship but the writers and I are terrified to go anywhere near that can of worms. However, in fairness to Winston who does deserve all the love in the world, we do flip a coin: heads, Winston is in a relationship; tails, he's not (yet). So far, it's always come up tails but we all know this is only delaying the inevitable; some day it will come up heads and the reckoning will be upon us.

Winston's existence is never explained. There are no other gorillas like him, this is very obvious without straight up being said, but it's never explained why or how it happened. He's just there, being a gorilla who is also a person. It drives fans batty and theories abound but whenever we're asked we just smile mysteriously (or smirk obnoxiously dependent on how annoyed we are by the asker).

It goes on for *checks how many seasons Supernatural was around* 16 seasons. (Listen, the idea of there being more Supernatural in the world than Tiny Woman, Big Gorilla is awful and I will not stand for it.) I end up full on Xena-ing it to make it last for 16 seasons. There are flashback episodes to Winston and Lena in their past lives (yes, plural). There are episodes about them being reincarnated into the future. There's even one about them going to an alternate universe where they're heroes who fight bad guys. There's a Lena doppelganger. There are multiple Lena doppelgangers. There's a Winston doppelganger. (You'd think a Winston doppelganger would explain some things. It doesn't.) There are no rules I will not break and no story too stupid, as long as I can make 16 seasons happen.

It's ends, as most sitcoms do, stupidly sappy. Lena and Emily have, of course, had multiple kids by the point (16 seasons, people!) and we do the flash forward to a huge friendiversy party for Lena and Winston (because, yes, they throw one because of course they would and also because that's 16 episodes already partially written). Grandkids are there and friends and jokes referencing precious episodes are bantered about. Everything is happy and joyous as they pose for a group shot. The shutter blinks and it zooms out to show the picture being slipped into a thick file labeled Winston that is obviously some sort of dossier and BAM straight to black.

Suck on that, fans.

what they smell like: She is a celebrity so it is with a heavy heart that I inform you that she does NOT have gamer stank. I mean she could, sometimes, but in public she actually smells pretty nice. Kind of like a strawberry-rose-hibiscus tea from a bougie boba shop.

favorite platonic/familial relationships: I had a lot of fun writing her hanging out with Zen in my fics! I also really like Dae-hyun.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: I've already talked about how the 'soldier 76 adopts her' headcanon was kind of weird and I'm glad it's fallen out of prominence, so I'm just gonna say it just feels kind of grabbing-at-straws-ish how she immediately gets shipped pretty much entirely based on age. It's like, "Oh look, a character who's roughly within a five year window of her age *plonk*" It happened with Brig and now it's happening with Kiriko. At least Brig had the 'mechanic' factor so they have something to talk about and bond over, but Kiriko makes it glaringly clear that it's really more about age than any really strong points of characterization. It just feels kind of cheap on both characters' behalves and it's the kind of shipping that makes me go, "Hey yeah people have a point when they say Overwatch fans only care about shipping."

the position they sleep in: Starfish sleeper, snorer, sprawled across several oversized plushies from fans, runs surprisingly warm despite how small she is, has big oversized tacky geeky t-shirts that were given away at e-sports events as pajamas.

a crossover au i’d love to see them in: God I'd love to see the Cruiser skin expanded into its own Rockabilly AU, it's just a fun --or--OR the cruiser skin is her skin for dangerous night racing on Route 66!!!

my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn: I really like Cruiser. I really like it when they play with decades/genres in skins, and also I love all the unique voice lines for it.

Hey! just curious about you! How old are you? what are your hobbies besides lovin those supersons? Favorite thing about yourself?

Hm,  might as well do an intro of sorts.

So uh, I’m Gerry. I’m a certified geek--if it’s anything geeky or nerdy or weeb I probably know about it. I’m also a bit of a gamer. I’m also pretty gay, and very keenly aware of recent events/news/issues but it’s all on the downlow, I make it a point to be chill about everything because unnecessary drama benefits no one. Live and let live is what I’m saying. Toxicity kills.

I try my best to write because it’s literally my only talent, even though English is just my second language. I don’t start fights and actively avoid them. I always do my best to be the understanding guy in the conversation. I practice tact to an art form. 

I got into comics because of Damian, and I got into DC because of Super Sons. That’s a big part of why I love them so much. they also provide me inspiration for writing, which is, as I’ve said, my only saving grace. Writing, in general, is what gave me my career as an adult and any chance to practice it and anything that inspires me to do so is very welcome.

I play a lot of games, but really only casually. I play action-adventure games mostly and others that have pretty big brand recall (like Witcher III, KH, DMC, Persona 5, Super Smash Bros, Breath of the Wild, oh and Overwatch, huge nut for that). 

My major hobby is Gundam Model kits. It used to be zoids when I was a kid, but as I grew up it turned into Gundam. It’s actually a recent obsession of mine, I only really got into it thanks to a friend last year. 

I also play a little bit of Magic the gathering, watch whatever’s the latest or most anticipated most shonen anime ever (think My Hero Aca, AOT, Demon Slayer, and Dr. Stone), love Marvel movies, and am an avid consumer of audio books from fiction (my favorite genre? powerful fantasy gay wizards), to non fiction (recently includes US policy on the Middle East from the last 70 years).

I go to tumblr and twitter to celebrate my fandom. I don’t go here to police how others enjoy theirs. I’ll never kinkshame anyone, never judge anyone for what they’re into, whatever it is. It’s easy to get along with me. Just be a decent human being who’s not out to pick a fight or prove that you're better than others in some way. Just talk about something we both like and we can start from there. Basically, don’t be an asshole. If I disagree with you, I’ll let you know politely. I’m not into calling out people or talking moral high grounds.

At the end of the day, it’s all about respect and live and let live. If you can agree to that, we can get along awesomely :D

Who am I?

I got some exciting news. Just two days ago the announcements were made, that my blog is now part of the Korean Study Network here on Tumblr. That is something I would have never imagined happening when I started this humble little mistake-ridden blog. I’m over the moon :D

So I thought that it is a good time to write a more detailed introduction to who the heck I am and why you should listen to me (Spoiler alert: you shouldn’t). So let’s begin! 

Name: My name is Jessica, but I prefer Jess. Age: Sweet, innocent 40 Pronouns: She/Her What I prefer to be called in English: Jess is perfect. If you forget GH for ‘Gwenchana Hwaiting’ is fine too ;) What I prefer to be called in Korean: Please never ever call me 아줌마. If you are older than me, please call me 제시카 or 제쓰. If you are younger than me please call me 언니 / 누나 or 제시카 씨 

Where in the world is Carm… no, wait. Where do I live? I live in Germany. Born and raised here but have moved across the country a few times, nowadays I reside in Berlin.

Partner: I live with my boyfriend of 17.5 years, sometime in the future we’re going to marry but since we are going to spend our lives together anyway it isn’t urgent to get to that stage. We met in an email Star Trek Roleplaying game 20 years ago. Yeah, the internet brings people together ;) 

Languages: I speak German (native), English (fluent), have been learning French for 3 years but forgot basically everything, and now learning Korean.

For how long have I been studying Koran: Since November 2018, but I’m a very slow self-studier.

Why did I start learning Korean? I wanted to understand dramas without having to read subtitles all the time so I can multitask. I am far from that, but I can understand a few things here and there by now. Makes me feel fluent every time! It also turned from just wanting to learn the language to also learn about the people, country and culture. I find it utterly fascinating to learn more and more. The good, the bad and the ugly.

So why aren’t you supposed to listen to me? Because I’m fallible! I am a beginner in learning Korean, I make mistakes. That is why I started the blog, to make those mistakes in public, to show that this is how we learn and that failing and making mistakes is not the end of the world. On the contrary. Also, I realized along the way that there is no one way to do things, to learn things. You experiment, try out things and then do what works for you. You can of course still listen if you choose to do, but having to deal with myself on a daily basis I can’t necessarily recommend. ;)

Hobbies: Writing (I’m an absolutely unknown author who doesn’t spend enough time on writing), Roleplay (pen&paper, email, Chat), KDrama, Geeking out, Computer Games (currently mostly Guild Wars 2 and Overwatch, sometimes Minecraft and some other games), 3D Meshing in Blender, Daddling in Photoshop. Is starting things I never finish a hobby? If so I am doing that a lot.

Geeky stuff: I’m a Huffleclaw / Ravenpuff, depending on the day and my brain functions. I love Doctor Who (classic and New Who, there is no doctor I don’t like but MY doctor is Ten), I have always been a huge Trekkie (since I was 8 actually - that does count as always, right?) and am part of a Star Trek RPG where I am a ship’s captain myself. The fantasy class of my choice is Magic Wielder/Wizard/Elementalist. I have more books than I will ever be able to read. I believe that Aliens exist, same goes for Spirits/ghosts. 

Misc: Favourite colors are teal, purple, red, deep green Favorite animals are turtles and pandas I don’t drink anything but water I had gastric bypass surgery last year which changed my life tremendously I love winter, autumn, and spring, summer is usually too hot for me I love the smell of rain (Petrichor anyone?) and freshly cut grass

Last but not least: I’m an over-sharer. I know you wouldn’t have guessed huh?

You see it, and you go, ‘right enough, think I’d love that!” get it ‘ome, nothing but a bit of greasy cheese stuck to some weak little patty and the ‘ole thing covered in oil, --I've heard this before of course, but there is nothing about it now coming out of her mouth that isn't intensely satisfying.

Actual lol Winston: When will she be back to normal? Mercy: I can't be sure. This is unknown territory, it's not there are being people ripped out of time every day. Winston: .....so tomorrow maybe?

I think that Winston just has complete FAITH in Tracer. That she can come back from anything, that nothing can ever actually BEAT HER (won’t this be fun later) and so even though Mercy is, very gently but realistically going, “expect nothing, she shouldn’t fucking be alive” Winston can’t help imself.

I love tracer battling at the edge of what she should do, how she should live, how she should take care, because of how much she wants to be living her normal life

Part of the reason I love Tracer so much is I see her as not having any quit in her, she just is willing to fight and go for as much as she can, and I love that about her.

Parvati is great, I love that she's just as kind as tracer but only a little less attuned to Winston's sensitivities, but just as cheerful with her approach to life, even when it isn't going her way

I like basically all of my Overwatch OCs but yes I adore Parvati and I’m glad you liked her!

the trauma from the timestream is so clear in the rest of this series that mercy's prognosis almost feels like understatement, bleak as it is. and i have to figure that it might be, that mercy is honest but still trying to soften the blow for Winston

When I was picking apart Overwatch at first, I was like, “It’s so weird that they treat this as horrific and no big deal at turns” and, upon thinking on it, was like “I think this would be really awful, and painful, and hard” which also gives more opportunity for Tracer to be resilient as hell, which I love. Anyway, I’ve done a lot of very odd medical research trying to cobble together the best version of the physical injury I could, and given that framework, yeah I think it would be DISTINCTLY unfun.

first off I love the description of Tracer as a creature of fog and mist. it feels so incongruous when so much of her is sunshine, but the sunshine needs something to light up and warm, and tracer is at home in the gloom. it works.

I truly think of Tracer as loving London’s weather at its worst, like, December, sleeting and windy and freezing, just like, “ah London! What a magical place!” as everyone else is like, “You a crazy person” and truly missing the cloudiness of it sometimes when she’s off elsewhere. The place I’m from has literally like 210 days of sunshine a year and London has like, 58? When I looked it up? So to me London is GREY AS FUCK, but I think Lena would be her own sunshine, like you said, but she would in all ways truly adore it.

The HPA AU comics I’ve been doing admittedly focused more on certain characters, so I’ve hardly thought about how to flesh out the others. To remedy that, I wrote a chatfic that revolved around them as a class and what started as something ‘just for fun’ turned into something a bit more serious, complete with plot and drama (which is strange for something in a chatfic format lol).

Kaede Akamatsu: The cheerful, charismatic and kind pianoholic who promotes friendship and cooperation, earning her the position of Class Representative. Selfless and empathetic to a fault, but can be quite pushy and bossy. Behind her confident facade, Kaede is insecure of not being able to live up to her responsibilities believing that all she’s ever good at is playing the piano, going by a ‘fake it til you make it’ attitude so as not to disappoint the people that relied on her ‘leadership.’ She has a tendency to be tactless towards people when very annoyed or under extreme stress.

Add: While not a very good cook, Kaede is an experienced baker.

Closest friend/s: Shuichi (childhood best friend), Rantaro, Kaito, Maki, Kirumi, Tenko (she is at least good friends with everyone in class tho)

Shuichi Saihara: The meek and soft-spoken detective in training who eventually fills the role of assistant class rep to Kaede. Cool-headed and intelligent, Shuichi shows promise of being proactive and responsible, but has difficulty in asserting himself due to confidence issues. He can be very emotional, prone to easily cry when overwhelmed by negative emotions. He also struggles with depression at times, although he tries to hide it as best he could. To people he is close with, Shuichi can be quite sassy and would joke about his ‘emo aesthetic.’

(When Shuichi wore his hat, his necktie is the standard red one)

Add: Shuichi is an avid fan of all things detective (looks up to Kyoko Kirigiri, has a sizable collection of Nancy Drew Books and Detective Conan Manga, retweets a lot of Sherlock Holmes quotes etc.)

Closest friend/s: Kaede (childhood best friend), Kaito, Maki, Kokichi, Kiibo

Kokichi Ouma: The self proclaimed supreme leader, he is a compulsive liar and prankster, fond of being disruptive and annoying towards his peers. While he tends to lie a lot, it’s not as outrageous and over the top (like in-game), and he would never push the buttons of anyone who was already distressed. Behind his outward unpleasantness, Kokichi cares a lot about his classmates, often calling them out on their bad habits (albeit it’s also in an unpleasant way) and looking out for them in his own unique way (which is subtle, at most). He dreads showing this side of him to class 79, as this was a sign of attachment on his part and this was only reserved to D.I.C.E members initially.

Add: Kokichi doesn’t know how to dance.

Closest friend/s: Rantaro, Shuichi

Maki Harukawa: The surly, unapproachable ‘assassin’ who is the walking definition of a tsundere. She dislikes socializing with her classmates, mostly because of her inability for small talk and difficulty to relate with her peer group as she spent most of her time dealing with children (in the orphanage). Maki is blunt but not unkind, and may be occasionally dismissive but (secretly) greatly appreciates those who reach out to her. Being emotional is Maki’s greatest pet peeve, making her great at compartmentalizing and repressing her emotions.

Add: Maki was physically conditioned and trained to be an assassin but it was for her to be Motion Capture stunt girl for an assassin-centric game. Has not killed anyone in real life, but physically can if desired.

Closest friend/s: Kaito, Shuichi, Kaede

Kaito Momota: The loud-mouthed and passionate astronaut who likes to give pep talks more than Kaede. Kaito pretty much keeps the class lively with his dumb antics. Despite his air of stupidity, he is quite street smart and a good judge of character.  He has patriarchal views on gender roles, naturally irking most of his female peers. Additionally, he is hot-headed, stubborn and very competitive. True to his very upbeat and positive persona though, he dislikes showing weakness/ appearing weak. Kaito suffers from Tuberculosis, hence he coughs a lot.

Add: Kaito makes the best omelettes.

Closest friend/s: Maki, Shuichi, Kaede, Ryoma (one-sided)

Rantaro Amami: The lax and enigmatic adventurer who likes to meme, apart from traveling the world. Rantaro has a big brother vibe to him, but can be quite silly at times. He is fond of recounting experiences about his travels, often retelling them in a more imaginative version. Despite his nonchalant approach on everything, Rantaro is very particular on people’s perspective of him. He craves to be an important figure among his classmates, just like his central role on his siblings’ lives.

Add: Rantaro has a Youtube channel where he makes travel vlogs in the style of Bear Grylls’ Man VS Wild.

Closest friend/s: Tsumugi (middle school bestfriend), Kokichi, Kaede, Kiibo, Korekiyo

Kirumi Tojo: The responsible and mature maid with a strict adherence to her creed on selfless devotion. Kirumi is very capable of doing any (reasonable) task given to her, completing them with practiced efficiency. Taking her talent more seriously, she appears impassive and mechanical to her classmates. Her maid schtick is actually a conscious effort for her; beneath the carefully-maintained frigid and collected persona is a shy and anxious Kirumi with personal whims and ambitions. She has a sense of humor and would sometimes tease her classmates in some way or another (which always takes them by surprise). She can be quite condescending and judgmental when pushed to the limit.

Add: Kirumi is a closet bookworm, and has a collection of cheesy, young adult romance novels (may or may not own some raunchy ones).

Closest friend/s: Ryoma, Kaede

Korekiyo Shinguji: The studious and aloof anthropologist who revels in the beauty of humanity. Kiyo likes to observe people, mentally taking note of the intricacies of human nature, although this hobby of his isn’t taken kindly by some. Ambitious and resourceful, he spends a lot of time reading to further his knowledge. In turn, he is quite socially inept and often scares away any ‘potential friend’ with his intelligent ramblings. He is very close with his sickly older sister, but gets annoyed with her fussiness.

Add: He is a capable illustrator, often adding sketches on his journal of anthropological notes.

Closest friend/s: Rantaro, Gonta, Angie

Tsumugi Shirogane: The quirky cosplayer and talented seamstress with a habit of referencing popular and obscure pop culture stuff. Tsumugi is an avid fan of a lot media, from games to animes to TV shows, both western and japanese, often spending most of her time in her room to indulge in her fandoms. She also has a tendency to break the fourth wall and would reference the ‘NDRV3 canon universe.’ Tsumugi is quite insecure of her geeky side, and is a bag of nerves when under the spotlight. She is cowardly and unable to stand her ground, often playing for both sides in an argument in an effort to please both.

Add: She is a big fan of Junko Enoshima (a fashion blogger with her own brand of clothing).

Closest friend/s: Rantaro (middle school bestfriend)

Ryoma Hoshi: The stoic and detached Pro Tennis player who is very fond of felines. Ryoma likes to spend most of his time alone and would often disappear to god knows where. He is responsive when in conversation, talking in a melancholic tone. He is profound and insightful, open to giving advice freely to those in need. While very patient, he is vindictive and unforgiving to those who wronged him horribly. His whole family was murdered by a mafia group (leaving him with just the family cat) and he has since personally chased leads that will bring the perpetrators to justice. Despite his pursuit of the killers, he is not interested in delivering justice on his own and merely conducted his own investigation to aid law enforcement.

Add: Ryoma has a folder of cat game apps on his phone, his favorite in particular being Neko Atsume.

Closest friend/s: Kirumi, Gonta

Gonta Gokuhara: The gentle giant with a fascination on animals, particularly insects. Gonta is good-natured (very kind, polite and honest) but naive and childish. In spite of this, he cannot be easily tricked by Kokichi and would sometimes even join in on roasting him. He wants to be a gentleman and really tries his best to exhibit qualities of such. While not academically smart (being raised in the wild), he has extensive knowledge on flora and fauna. Gonta has bouts of self-doubt, believing himself to be incapable of anything. He can be very hard on himself and would do reckless things to prove himself.

Add: Contrary to most of his classmates’ impression on him, Gonta is not technologically challenged. He plays Overwatch in his free time (he mains Bastion).

Close friend/s: Ryoma, Korekiyo

Miu Iruma: The lewd and brash inventor with onion skin. Miu is outspoken and campy, often considered obnoxious by her classmates. She likes to make dirty jokes and projects an air of self-importance, but is also quick to deflate when reprimanded or talked back at. Being neglected her whole life, Miu wants attention, hence her over the top personality but this in turn made her a deplorable person. She spends most of her time building knickknacks to stave off the loneliness she feels. Over time, she does try to be less of a difficult person.

Add: Miu doesn’t know how to swim or ride a bike (but she can invent something that will keep her afloat on water and something that can keep her balanced on the bike).

Close friend/s: Kiibo

Kiibo Idabashi (not a Robot): The well-meaning and pacifistic Robotics Engineer that has a difficulty in relating with his fellow humans. Kiibo has lived a very sheltered life and has not been exposed to any social interaction with his age group prior to his enrollment at Hope’s Peak, making him quite stiff and robotic. He is very shy and apprehensive at speaking in class or called to recitation. He is also wimpy, but can get very defensive of his robotic creations.

Add: Kiibo missed out a lot on his childhood, so class 79 would often indulge him on what he was deprived of (like having pizza, playing tag and watching animated films).

Close friend/s: Miu, Shuichi, Rantaro

Tenko Chabashira: The energetic and cheerful aikido master who loves to defend girls from the degenerate MENaces. Tenko loves to be active, often encouraging the girls to exercise (especially those with a sedentary lifestlye). A fiery character, she wears her emotions on her sleeves and reacts strongly on impulse. She has a on a hair trigger temper, especially if the aggressor involves a guy and has a tendency to be physically violent. Tenko’s distaste towards men in general stems from a dark past: she and her mother suffered abuse from her own father. Her mother was eventually murdered by her father in front of her (at a young age) and after her father was subsequently locked up, she was taken in by her mother’s friend who was matriarchal.

Add: She is an adept shogi and chess player.

Close friend/s: Himiko, Angie, Kaede

Himiko Yumeno: The resident sloth who also happens to be a magician (er… mage). Himiko is very lethargic, dislikes doing almost any physical activity, often trying to weasel her way out of doing assigned tasks and the like. She isn’t dismissive of social interaction though, and is quite talkative when you start a conversation with her. She loves to watch youtube videos and web series, particularly korean drama. She is good at math, and would tutor Angie and Tenko when pestered enough.

Add: Himiko is ambidextrous, and can seamlessly use chopsticks with her left hand.

Angie Yonaga: The eccentric and bubbly artist with a deep devotion to an obscure religion. Angie is a pious devotee of Atua, and is willing to provide for the spiritual needs of her classmates. She loves mentioning unusual habits and customs from her island home, such as blood sacrifices and orgies. Hardly anything fazes her, this nonchalance and ignorance being considered sinister by some of her peers. Even with the best intentions in mind, she sometimes used religion to get what she wanted.

Add: Angie owns four horses (named War, Famine, Pestilence and Death) that Hope’s Peak allowed her to keep in school (for some reason). Their stables were located at the student/staff parking lot.

Great Gozu: The former Ultimate Wrestler is now the homeroom teacher of Class 79A. Despite his intimidating physique, he is gentle, patient and very supportive. He becomes quickly attached to class 79A and is quite protective of them.

Kaede//Kirumi: Both of them are altruistic, though one is out of pure selflessness while the other due to moral obligation. Kaede is the first to develop a crush on the other, mostly out of physical attraction but it’s Kirumi that first falls in love between the two of them. Kirumi is mostly drawn to Kaede’s comforting presence and empathic nature, and is impressed with the pianist’s diligence in perfecting her musical craft. Kaede admires the maid’s dedicated work ethic, and is very enamored with Kirumi’s elegance and grace. Kaede’s considerate nature holds her back from pursuing Kirumi head-on out of respect for the maid’s seemingly unshakeable adherence to her creed of selfless devotion, while Kirumi struggles internally in balancing her whims and sticking to her creed. This results in them tiptoeing around their feelings towards each other.

Shuichi//Kokichi: One lies while the other exposes the truth. Kokichi, despite his growing interest on the detective, denies his feelings. Shuichi, initially unconfident about his chances with the supreme leader, takes the leap and reveals his feelings first. Kokichi is drawn to Shuichi’s intelligence, good-natured personality and cute face (and he may or may not have a detective kink). Shuichi is drawn to Kokichi’s complex personality, considering it a mystery puzzle only he could solve. Both Kokichi and Shuichi suffer from insecurities that the other deserve better than themselves; Kokichi believes Shuichi wouldn’t fall for him because of his complicated personality while Shuichi thinks Kokichi was in love with the more appealing Kaito, somewhat resigned he has no chance.

Kaito//Maki: Polar opposites and yet both hide the same thing; one relies on outward emotion to hide a weakness while the other represses emotion to hide a weakness. Kaito is greatly drawn to Maki’s independent and capable mindset but struggles with his own sexist mindset. Maki falls for Kaito’s endearing personality, but struggles to make sense of her romantic feelings. Eventually, they both overcome their weaknesses. Maki is the first to fall for the other, and while she is also the one to confess her feelings first, it was Kaito who first changed his ways, learning to be less sexist. Maki avoids Kaito when her feelings toward him intensified, but this unfazed the astronaut and remained wooing her consistently.

Tenko//Himiko: Polar opposites that balance each other out. Tenko and Himiko may have been the first pair to be immediately drawn to each other but they are the last pair to be officially together. Tenko’s more active lifestyle gets Himiko to reconsider her lethargic nature while Himiko’s relaxed attitude grounds Tenko’s overactive nature. Tenko was drawn to Himiko from the get-go, and while the smaller girl was initially annoyed by the aikido master being insistent, she eventually warms up to her. They subsequently act like girlfriends, but surprisingly their ‘official’ get together doesn’t happen til later.

Description: Jeongguk is Busan’s pride and joy. He protects the city from all enemies; omnic and talon alike. His face is plastered on every billboard and every street corner. You can’t even drink a can of soda without feeling like he’s watching you. The glitz and glamour he receives is endlessly irritating to you, his mechanic. When will he wake up and see that there's more important things than fame?

Author’s Note: D.va’s animated short had me feeling some type of way. So this is pretty much based off of that. Thanks, Blizzard. If only they’d make a kpop idol D.va skin. Only then will all my dreams have come true. This is my second attempt at truly writing a fic so bare with me.

“Former ESports Champion turned meka pilot, Jeon Jeongguk has done it again! Just last week he risked his life to save Busan from the Keishun ominics. At just 20 years old, he’s become South Korea’s star in the line of defense. Quick to respond to the surprise attack, Jeon and the meka squad were -”

You click off the holovideo with a roll of your eyes and pick up a clean rag to wipe of your greasy face. Rummaging through your tools, you scoff at the latest headlines. Here you are fixing up his mech from the previous week’s battle. He’s all but killed your poor baby, Bunny. The name is lame, you know and Jeongguk reminds you often. Watching how the mech bounces through the battlefields, you feel the name suits her well. So, you’ve lovingly named her Bunny. You nearly took off his head when he brought her back for repairs. The right fusion cannon had been entirely blown off, meaning you had to build a new one from scratch.

Did he care that building that cannon had caused you two sleepless nights? You doubt he’d care much if he knew. He’d probably say “Suck it up, buttercup. The enemy waits for no one.” So you grabbed your wrench and you sucked it up. As much as you hate to say it, the city does depend on him. Hell, the country kind of depends on him. It seems like too much for any one person.

You sigh and hoist yourself inside the mech to finish repairing the inside control panel. You and Jeongguk have been friends for as long as you can remember. It’s funny how you were once modifying his hoverboard when you were kids and now you’re fixing his mech as he comes home from yet another battle. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t worried about him. The boy, who was once carefree and blithe, now shoulders the responsibility of protecting an entire nation. You don’t know how he does it and honestly, you wish he didn’t have to.

Jeongguk taps on the thick glass of Bunny’s windshield. You were so immersed in the control panel, you didn’t hear him come in. Why is he here? You furrowed your brows at him as you opened the back hatch of the mech.

“What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be out taking pictures with your fans or something?” You say, sounding a little more bitter than you had intended.

He sighs, “Don’t be like that, y/n. The fame thing is annoying and overrated. I’ve told you a thousand times.”

“Whatever. Really though, I told you I’d call you when I’m done with repairs and updates. She’s nowhere near ready. I need at least another week.”

“Another week?” he whines, “I don’t wanna wait anymore.”

You roll your eyes in annoyance and move to get out of the mech. He holds out his hand as an offer to help you down and you take it. “Guk, what’s the rush? The Keishun probably won’t attack for at least another couple of months. You really need a break,”

“You know I can’t take a break. We barely won last time. The enemy is out there evolving and finding ways to become stronger. I have to stay a few steps ahead of them. My squad, this city, the country… They need me at my best. We can’t afford to lose. If I lose, than we lose everything. I’m not going to risk that.”

“Stopping putting all of this on yourself. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak. You’re only human, Jeon.”

He shrugs and says, “I know. I’ve got this.”

You know he’s not listening to what you’re saying. You sigh and give up on scolding him. It’s an old fight, you know it will come up again. He’s always worried about everyone else and never himself. It makes you so angry you could scream, but you won’t. Having been his friend for so long, you should probably learn to accept his fearless martyr attitude. But why should you have to accept it? It’s entirely unfair. While he’s off worrying about the rest of the world, someone needs to worry about him.

You turn your back to him and grab the large cable laying on the ground. You plug it into the main computer that programs the mech. You need to push this matter aside and focus on running program tests for Bunny.

“Can you please get in the mech and see if the right arm has decent mobility?” You say gently, without looking at him. You know that if you look at him right now, you might cry out of frustration and that will upset him. He has enough on his plate without worrying about you too.

“Alright.”

Once you hear the closing clicks from the back hatch of the mech, you allow yourself to turn around. The mech immediately comes to life around him and he’s fully focused on the task at hand. He does as you say and moves the right arm through a full range of motions. Somehow, he looks the most natural inside the mech. You can’t explain it.

Maybe it’s because you’re so used to seeing him in the mech. Somehow, it’s almost like Bunny has become a part of him. Maybe it’s the fluid way he pilots the mech. There’s never a hiccup or pause between his thoughts and the mech’s movements. He’s really an incredible pilot, you must admit. He never fails to leave you in awe. You’d never tell him this though. His ego is already much too big for your liking.

“She’s moving better than ever. The arm even feels lighter! How’d you do it?” He turns the mech towards you, excitement radiating through his smile. You can’t help but grin back, feeling your chest swell with pride. He did recognize your hard work.

“I’m glad you’ve noticed. I wanted to experiment with using carbon fiber material instead of the steel we have been using. It’s much lighter, but just as strong. We’ll see how this one holds up in battle and then I might replace the left cannon with the same material.”

He ejects himself from the mech to closer inspect the fusion cannon. Running his fingers along the bright green paint, he turns to you with a grin.

“This is fucking incredible, y/n. Do you know how much faster I can move? Imagine a whole meka made of this stuff. We’d be lethal!”

You laugh, “You already are lethal, but yeah. That’s the end goal. Even with just the cannons replaced, it’ll tone down the overall bulk of the mech. I’ve also been working on ways to narrow down the spread of the cannons so you can be more precise with your aim.”

“You really are brilliant, you know that?”

You smirked, “Obviously. You’d be screwed without me.”

“Honestly, I would be.”

You move around him and climb back into the mech. “Okay. Enough of the sappy shit, Jeon. Bunny and I have tests to finish running.”

“I can help, you know. It is my mech after all.”

You open your mouth to argue, but something on the computer monitor caught your eye. That can’t be right… An incoming enemy? You get out of the mech, scrambling to get a better look. The monitor flashes blood red and you can hear the shrill city sirens go off, signaling for the people of Busan to take cover. Four aircrafts are making their way towards the meka base.

“No, no, no. It’s too early. They attacked just last week. How do they have more omnics ready?”

Jeongguk had already pulled the heavy cable from Bunny and locked himself inside. His headset was on and he began checking each system to prepare for take off.

“Guk, no! Y-you're not ready. I’ll call the rest of the team. You have to sit this one out!” You say firmly, stepping in front of Bunny.

“We can’t wait for backup, y/n. The omnics will be in the city by then. I can’t let that happen. I’m going.” He looks at you fiercely and from that one look you know that you’ll never be able to talk him out of it. You feel your heart break as you step aside for him take off.

Soundlessly, you sit down at the monitor and slip on your headset. If he’s going to be an idiot and charge into battle, than you’re going to be there to talk him through it. There’s no way in hell you’re going to just sit on the sidelines and watch him get hurt. You quickly pull the radar onto the screen to find the direction the Keishun are heading.

“It looks like they’re heading north, towards Suyeong-gu.” Your voice cracks slightly as you say this.

If he recognized the hesitance in your words, he didn’t show it. “I’m on it. Boosters engaged!” He calls.

Without even a glance, he takes off from the meka base and toward the Keishun. You kept telling yourself not to cry. You have to stay focused right now, you don’t have time to cry. You pulled the mech’s dash camera on to the screen, this way you could see exactly what he sees. You also pulled up a screen from the mecha hud, in order to monitor Jeongguk’s vitals.

You watched as he soared through the sky. The enemy’s small dots on the radar grew closer and closer to Bunny’s. The aircrafts took form before the camera on the dash. They’re much smaller than you had expected, about half the size of a jet. However, you knew better than anyone not to dismiss the omnic based on the size of the aircraft. The body of the craft is flat and triangular with four cord like appendages spinning behind it. As stupid as it sounds, it reminds you a little of a mechanical squid.

The omnics spot Jeongguk immediately and aim a barrage of missiles toward him. The missiles streak through the sky at an unforgiving speed, but Jeongguk was a step ahead.

“Activating Defense Matrix.” You hear his voice through your headset, tone calm and even.

The missiles soar into the matrix and explode meters away from their obvious target. Jeongguk gave them no time to react before flying into an attack of his own. He wove through the sky and aimed his micro missiles at the nearest omnic, effectively removing it from the battle. The remaining three went separate ways; One retreating, one racing towards the meka base, and the last flew straight towards the city.

“Watch it, Guk! They’re splitting up.” You warn, voice tense.

“I see it!” He calls as he races toward the omnic retreating.

You don’t care what Jeongguk said, you’re calling Jimin for backup. You quickly type in the code to have the meka base system send for help. You pray Jimin will make it there in time.

 Bunny caught up to the enemy in mere seconds. Jeongguk flew above the omnic and shot it down from above. ‘Two down, two to go.’, you thought. Maybe you shouldn’t have signaled for Jimin to come. Just as you thought that, the Keishun omnic that was headed toward the base flipped around and headed straight for Bunny.

“Jeongguk! Behind you!” You cry, feeling your heart jump into your throat..

Caught of guard, he turned Bunny around just to be thrown in the midst of the enemy’s missile attack. He didn’t have enough time to activate his Defense Matrix, he’d have to try and dodge the oncoming missiles. He swerved sharply to the right, but he wasn’t fast enough to save Bunny’s left arm.

“Dammit.” He growled through clenched teeth. He aims for the Keishun using only his right fusion cannon. His bullets caught the enemy’s craft and the omnic fell from the sky.

“Y/n. Where’s the last one?”

“He’s headed toward the city. You’ll have to hurry.”

Jeongguk whipped the mech towards the city and sped off, pushing Bunny as fast as she could go. You could hear his bated breaths through the headset and his pleas for Bunny to make it there in time. Your chest felt tight and you thought you were going to puke. You gripped the desk fiercely, knuckles white, in a desperate attempt to ground yourself.

With the last omnic in sight, Bunny unleashed an array of missiles and bullets toward the enemy. You’ve never seen Jeongguk miss a shot, never, but this time he missed. Something definitely feels off. You check Bunny’s hud for Jeongguk’s vitals and run a quick damage report on Bunny. Jeongguk is fine, but he had pushed Bunny too hard. Her boosters are beginning to fail, which is causing the mech to drag.  

“Guk, Jimin should be on-” The remaining omnic took you both by surprise. It turns it’s aim from the city and races toward Guk’s mech. He raises Bunny’s right fusion cannon to aim, but it’s too late. The omnic slams into Bunny and wraps it’s four tentacle-like arms around them. Jeongguk tries to aim the right fusion cannon towards the omnic, but the omnic was too strong and snapped the mech’s arm clean off. The Keishun was trying to crush the mech.

“Y/n. I need your help. I need you to override Bunny’s system.” His voice is calm and sure. If he’s afraid, you can’t tell.

“I-I can’t. You know that will cause her to self destruct.” You say. You didn’t realize you’ve been crying until you heard your voice crack. Dammit. This isn’t the time. You will yourself to pull it together.

“I’ll be fine, y/n. Trust me.” He tells you softly. To your right, you can see Jimin’s meka on the landing strip getting ready for take off. You quickly send Bunny’s coordinated to Jimin’s meka. He will be there soon. You just need to buy him a little time.

“I need you to buy me a few minutes to override the system. Can you do that, Jeon?” You’re lying through your teeth. You know each program on that mech like the back of your hand. You could do it in seconds, but he doesn’t need to know that.

“Hell yeah, I can.”

He uses what’s left of Bunny’s left arm to swing at the omnic. You hear the sharp sound of crunching metal as he lands the hit.  He grabs his hand-held blaster from beside him, sticks his arm underneath Bunny’s windshield and fires at the omnics lower left arm. The metallic tentacle falls dead weight. Out of the corner of your eye, you watch Jimin’s mech take flight toward the city. So you begin to override the system.

“Alright, I’ve got it. You have sixty seconds until Bunny self destructs. Jimin will be there to catch you.”

“That’s not fast enough! We’ll be in the city by then. It’s gotta be now.” He says. You can hear the distinct clicks of the back hatch opening. You know exactly what he’s planning and your eyes widen with panic.

“Jeongguk, don’t you fucking dare.” You cry, vision blurring.

“I’ll be alright, y/n. I’ll see you soon, okay?” He didn’t give you any time to answer. He ejects himself from the mech, uses his blaster to take careful aim at Bunny’s core and fires.

You run to the window in time to see a green light flash across the sky. You know somewhere Jeongguk has fallen into the water bellow.

Jeongguk can only remember small fragments of events after the initial blast. He remembers briefly fighting against the water with his lungs burning and his legs heavy. He remembers a bright light shining down on him and people shouting as the waves lapped against his listless aching body. He remembers your warm hand grasping his as he was being wheeled along under fluorescent lights. He could here your pleas for him to hold on. He wished he weren’t so tired. He wished he could squeeze your hand back and tell you he was alright.

The lights were bright and they make his eyes ache. He wishes someone would turn them off, or at least dim them. Jeongguk turns his head to the side and finds you curled up in a chair, staring out the window. He wonders what you’re thinking about. He swallows harshly, lips and throat feeling dry.

“Hey.” You hear him say, voice hoarse and tired.

You reply with a soft ‘Hi’, attention still on the street bellow. You feel exhausted. You haven’t been able to sleep since he’s been in the hospital. The doctors have offered you a bed and pills to help you fall asleep, but you don’t want them. You wanted to be here when he woke up. Now, you’re really not sure why. You’d cried all day yesterday, how do you still have anything left?

Nonetheless, you felt tears spill down your cheeks. You really don’t want him to see you cry. He hates it when you cry.

“How long have I been out?” He asks, wincing as he moved to sit up. His arms and back are still so sore. He wonders how far he fell.

“Two days, not too long.” Your voice is barely above a whisper.

“Are you crying? God, please don’t cry. You have the ugliest crying face.” He teases you, hoping to ease the tension surrounding the room.

You turn toward him feeling absolutely furious. Standing up, you march to his bedside and deliver a sharp smack to the back of his head.

“Ow, what the hell is the matter with you?” He rubs his head glaring at you.

“What the hell is the matter with YOU? Do you know what it’s been like fucking waiting here while you were in surgery? While you’ve been sleeping? This whole thing could have been prevented if you’d just let someone help you, but God forbid you let someone else steal your fucking spotlight. You run headfirst into these life or death situations without thinking of the consequences and I’m fucking sick of it. I never should’ve let you go out there alone. I should’ve locked Bunny down and made your dumbass wait for backup. Never again, Jeongguk. I swear. I’ll never let anything like this happen again…” Your eyes are brimmed with tears and burning with a kind of anger Jeongguk has never seen from you.

“Do you really think I did all that for a headline or two?” He sounded sincerely hurt and you almost felt bad for implying that.

“I don’t know, Jeongguk. I can’t figure out if you’re extremely selfish or just stupidly selfless. All I know is that I can’t watch you kill yourself.”

“I'm not gonna die, y/n. Jesus. Will you please-”

“I love you too much for that. I….I don’t think I can be your mechanic anymore.” You cut him off, tone much softer than before. You’ve been thinking about this for weeks now and you wish it hadn’t come down to this, but it feels like it has too. You can’t watch him destroy himself with his reckless decisions.

“Y/n…..I can’t do this without you. This isn’t about fame, it never has been. I just want to protect this country and everyone I love. I’ll admit, I should have waited for backup. I pushed Bunny to hard and I destroyed her. I did it to protect everyone, not for the fame. Please, I need you there…” Ignoring the plea of his body to stay resting, he leaned forward and took your hand.

You couldn’t look at him right now because you know you’d give him anything he wanted if you did. You muffled a sob with your other hand. Why does he have to make this so difficult for you?

He tugged you closer to him with a grimace and you didn’t put up a fight. You know you should have, but you couldn’t. Not when you heard the break in his voice as he whispered ‘come here’. He pulled you close and felt the sobs you had been fighting rake through your body. He tried to swallow the lump in his throat and held you as close he possibly could.

“I know I’m reckless. I know I don’t think things through like I should, but I can try to be more careful. I'll take a break even. I just…. I didn’t know it upset you so much. Please, y/n. Just stay.”

“I'm sorry, Jeongguk. I-I'm so sorry.”

You tried to pull away, but he just held you even tighter. You felt his tears soak through the shoulder of your shirt. Why are you so weak? Your mind was screaming at you to get up and leave, but you just couldn't. Not with him choking out hysterical apologies and clinging to you the way he is. The dam was broken now and every little emotion that he had held back was hitting him full force. You couldn’t leave him like this. Your resolve was crumbling fast, but it didn’t matter anymore.

You laid down next to him and he clung to you. You ran your fingers through his hair while he cried. His shaky breath began to slow down and you knew he was falling asleep. You let your mind wonder.

Maybe, you could stay. Maybe, he meant what he said and he just didn’t know how seriously this affected you and those around him. Maybe, you’re just thinking too hopefully. Maybe, you’re just exhausted and incapable of making any kind of decisions right now.

“I love you, Guk.” you whispered to him. You doubt he heard it.

Your eyes felt too heavy to keep open and you let yourself finally drift into sleep.

You were gone when he woke up. He should've been able to predict that, but it still stung. He'd hoped that maybe you would change your mind, as selfish as that sounds. Maybe he should listen to you. He’s been in battles much worse, but this time around even he couldn't deny that he had taken it too far.

Did he really expect to be able to live a long and healthy life like this? You're right and he knew it. It's just hard to understand the reality of the situation. He needed to make some changes. It seemed dramatic when you said it, but it's true. He's killing himself and he can't keep it up anymore.

He tapped the button to call the nurses in. His head was pounding and he wasn't sure if it was the injuries or the thoughts swirling around his skull. He wandered where his phone was, if someone would bring it to him. He's ready to give up piloting mekas for good if that's what it took to keep you there. None of it really mattered if you weren't by his side. He loves you and it’s time for him to tell you.

Wherein Minako gets the bachelorette party of her dreams

This was written for Doc's shamash competition. The prompt was: Fareeha Amari (Overwatch) and Rei Hino working together on __ and it went (story bit/sketch/idea)

Okay, I feel like this is low hanging fruit but it was my first thought so let's fucking roll with it: bachelorette party. Okay, so, I know almost no OW people except yours so I guess it'll be Hana and, hm, Minako. Hana because it then becomes a PR event which requires Fareeha to get way more involved than she ever would and Minako because, holy fuck, imagine dealing with her being in a celebrity wedding. The stuff of nightmares.

Minako makes a list of the things she wants. Rei is immediately all "fuck you, this is disgusting" but then Fareeha enters the chat and is like, "Rei, I won't allow it." And Rei, who is the human equivalent of challenge accepted, is like "fuck you, you can't tell me what to do". And. Fareeha pulls the whole "I'm in charge of OW and I'm older so you should listen to me". Which we all know is exactly what you should say to Rei Hino (Usagi, Ami, and Makoto are watching this whole thing happen with eyes and mouths getting increasingly large and round.)

At this point, although Fareeha does not yet know it, but war has been declared. Every digusting thing on that list? Minako gets it. Minako wants a prostitute to be at the party? Why? Who cares, Mina had one now! Minako wants every person who is there to have an individual penis cupcake that's not actually cupcake but is a dildo with frosting on it so when people go to take a bite they're just biting silicone dick? Minako's wish is Rei's command. Lena later says it's the best party she's ever been to. She didn't even know Fareeha's face could turn that color.

When Hana and Mina get divorced a month later so that Rei and Mina can get married in Vegas, Hana pays for a honeymoon to [redacted] for fear that Fareeha might actually kill Rei and/or Mina. (When Hana is asked later about why she wanted Fareeha as the person to help plan the bachelorette party with Rei, Hana says, "Oh, no, Minako specifically ask for Fareeha to help. She said she thought Fareeha and Rei would work well together. I guess she was wrong.")

Fandoms are one of the newest hyperboles to take on a life of their own in our current media generation.  While the actions of hardcore media fanatics used to be viewed as geeky beyond the point of social acceptability, new online communities help these like-minded individuals connect and fuel each others’ obsessive desires to form the megalomaniacal overminds we know as Fandoms.

Check out Tumblr and search the tags for Marvel’s Avengers.  You’ll find a wealth of fan-made material carefully constructed by people who are truly in love with/obsessed with all things Avengers.  They’ll discuss with their friends their favorite relationships–‘ships’ as they’re called–and draw the characters out on dates, cuddling by fires, having dinner parties.

Want to read a story where the Avengers go to the beach?  You can find one.  Want to read a story where the Avengers are in an alternate-universe high school in Japan? You can find one.  Want to see the Avengers drawn as cats?  You can.  Want to see a picture of your favorite Avenger couple flying on a dragon?  You can find one, and if you can’t you can commission an artist on Tumblr to draw you one.

Same goes for the video game Overwatch.  Or the television series Supernatural.

The magnitude of the obsession surrounding these media narratives can almost eclipse the actual source material.  The number of fanatics on Tumblr who would sail their Stucky (relationship between Steve Rogers and his BFF James Buchanan Barnes) ships into battle can sometimes seem more numerous than all the people who watched the Captain America movies and made it a financial success to begin with.

I myself wrote fan fiction as a young teen.  I loved the characters of video games but wanted different stories or couples.  With no options for them in the games, I would invent them.  Or scour FanFiction.net with specifically chosen keywords to find them.

These fandoms extend from movies and video games to real life celebrities and even kids shows.  The Steven Universe fandom is extensive, filled with fan-theories and intricately designed ‘gemsonas’ representing the fans’ inner-characters. There are fan fictions about One Direction going out with each other, getting married and having babies.  The imaginations of those who absolutely adore can grow exponentially wild; and media-creators are taking notice.

The MTV series Teen Wolf found itself a popular ship in the form of Sterek; made up of the characters Stiles and Derek.  The popularity of this ship filtered its way into official Teen Wolf media with the actors who played the characters sharing posts of them together on Instagram or Twitter, as well as the show putting the characters on-screen together knowing it would lead to online conversations of lingering glances and double-meanings within the script.

The willingness of the show to feed the fandoms was, however, a double-edged sword.  While it initially helped build the series in terms of ratings and online presence, eventually all of the non-romantic Sterek pushes from the network and the show’s writers wasn’t enough to satiate the avaricious fans who wanted to see the gay love of their imagined Sterek become official canon. This never happened, with both Stiles and Derek being given various female love-interests, and eventually Sterek fans revolted, leading to ratings drops.

All the efforts made by Teen Wolf to push Sterek were no longer seen as fan-service but queer-baiting.  With no actual relationship developing between the two on the show, the fans kept to their online fandoms sharing fictions and art where their dreams were reality.  The canon of the series became less appealing to the fandom than their own creations of it.

Do writers cater to fans and craft narratives based on what the online communities want to see?  Do they ignore the pushes of the fans, no matter how serious, heartfelt or obsessive and write their own stories?

Maybe one day there will be shows or movies where the fans vote for what happens or who gets together?  Maybe more fan-fictions will be turned into narratives of their own by big production companies in a similar vein to Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey?  Maybe new sequels will be released based on alternate realities the fandoms created and crave?

Only time will tell just how influential fandoms will be on narrative integrity, but it certainly has already begun to have a real impact on the media we absorb.

So keep writing your fan fictions and drawing your favorite characters making out with each other and let your freaky fandom flags fly free.  You never know: you might just get your weirdest desires up on TV.

Having recently moved down to Dorset and therefore being a little out of the way of big, geeky events in London that I had had the pleasure of attending while I briefly lived there (MCM London Comic Con, Rezzed 2017…) I had heard talk of a Bournemouth Comic Con. I wasn’t expecting it to be anywhere near as big as London Comic Con (and I was right) but I do love any excuse to dress up and I don’t really mind how big it is as long as I have a good time, because of that this post will mostly be me being a bit cosplay indulgent but then I’ll write about the event as a whole nearer the end!

Cosplay

To start the plan for my cosplay I Googled the date of the event to give myself a deadline but what is this??? The 28th/29th August? Aaaah!!! A week away?! (At the time of Googling) There was no way my Mei costume would be ready in time (yes, the Overwatch obsession continues and is now making it’s way into my sewing room). I do have my Link costume from my last Comic Con adventure but that shield was heavy and being a bit of a smaller event I wanted to scope out the cosplay caliber first and do something a bit more casual. Luckily, being the fancy dress fan that I am I have a fancy dress box and I soon dug out my Splicer costume (from Bioshock) that I wore for Halloween last year (although Alice in Wonderland and Unicorn were also on the cards). Unfortunately I had thrown my Splicer dress away thinking I wouldn’t need a torn up dress any more. Foolish past me. Amazon Prime to the rescue, I ordered a cheapy chips dress at the last minute then Dan and I got to work ripping our clothes up the night before the event, we even took them outside and partially burned them, I bet the neighbours loved that. We went with another two splicers as well, one of which looked pretty scary and got very into character, small children did not like walking past us, that was until it was just Dan and I sat down and a small child walked past us and excitedly yelled “BUNNY RABBITS!!!”.

As you can see from the slideshow above, I don’t do scary very well.

Lots of people took pictures of us though, in fact I think that almost as many people took my picture there as they did when I put loads of effort in and dressed as Link for London Comic Con. Maybe that is because there weren’t as many cosplayers so it was a bit more of a novelty to see us, but of those that were there there were some really good ones, here’s a little slideshow of some of the ones I saw.

There was a cosplay masquerade too, which I believe was a little show where the cosplayers got to show off their costumes, but because the guys wanted to go out and travel across almost the entirety of Bournemouth in search of food at lunch time rather than just buy a sandwich at the event, and also because we couldn’t really figure out where to go to actually sign up, we didn’t get to go. Nevermind! I know for next time now. It wasn’t very well sign posted anyway though, we didn’t even know about it until someone asked if we were going to enter, they could have done with handing out leaflets or something with a timetable of events and where to find what but I noticed they didn’t do that at London Comic Con either.

The most high profile guests were John Rhys-Davies (aka Gimli from Lord of The Rings, the role I know him for) and David Prowse (Darth Vader, the body not the voice), I didn’t get an autograph or any pictures as I don’t really know them for anything other than that so it didn’t seem right where as when I met Catherine Tate I have seen loads of stuff that she does, not just Doctor Who. There were also some Cosplay guests, one day I hope to be that good at cosplay, it’s amazing what people can make. Once you’ve seen 1 generic geeky merch stall you’ve seen them all really haven’t you? It’s the artists that really bring these sort of events together, selling things that they’ve handmade themselves and there were a lot of them in Bournemouth that were very talented. I’m not really one for art, I appreciate it and I’d like some to display on my walls but I don’t have the personal interest to maintain a full attention span for a long number of hours, after a while I just don’t really care, in London I was so exhausted wandering around that everyone’s work just seemed to blend into one and all I wanted was to go home, in Bournemouth though I was happy to wander round having a nice long look at everyone’s stuff. Most of what I bought was edible, I bought a brownie and cupcake covered in edible glitter and Butter Beer, being edible they did not survive long enough for me to get a picture… Oops. I also bought a unicorn ear cuff and spent an embarrassingly long time debating whether to buy an alpaca plushie wearing a top hat or not, in the end I decided against it because I wasn’t sure if I actually wanted it or if it was just me getting caught in the event hype. It was super cute though…

In Summary…

I had a really nice time, and I didn’t set out to compare the two events at all but you know what? I actually enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the London Comic Con. I would definitely go again, in fact I may forgo London Comic Con in the future to go to the smaller ones instead, London’s not that far away from me I guess but the stress, cost and organisation of it really takes it out of me, this one was just so easy though! London has a much better chance of having special guests that are a bit more relevant to my preferred fandoms though. Having said that all our really famous English actors and celebs seem to end up in American conventions rather than their home turf. One day I’ll get to go to San Diego Comic Con…

What if Blizzard existed in the Overwatch universe and was just as horrible?

Another prompt from one of Doc's shamash contest. This prompt was: Overwatch thought, funny

Blizzard actually exists in the Overwatch universe. They make tv shows, specifically, and when they approach OW with the idea of writing a tv show, it seems like a good idea. Seems. They're generally pretty solid but the person they put in charge of the show had very specific ideas and also has a lot of pull with the studio so somehow manages to keep getting away with things.

It doesn't seem like he fact checks anything. He gets their ages wrong and says something different in different episodes. When called out on it he just says he's done his research and refuses to acknowledge any wrong doing. The only silver lining is that after a while the characters of the show only resemble the real people in the vaguest possible way so OW takes to just mostly ignoring the show.

That is, until he has Fareeha start dating Genji, and Angela has to literally hold Fareeha back from killing him. (The lack to research is already so horrendous and fucking Genji?!?! What's even the point of people who won't do research?) Lena, meanwhile, is laughing so hard she's crying. Genji disappears and no one sees him for a month which leads to speculation that Fareeha killed him. (Lena goes on message boards under a pseudonym and proceeds to list increasingly bizarre ways that Fareeha has probably killed him. When he does eventually pop up she starts a conspiracy theory that he's actually a robot Fareeha made to cover her tracks.)

The next few weeks are spent with Fareeha verbally flaying anyone and everyone she can find that has power over the show. The show has one of the bad guys kill Genji in response which Genji fans blame on Fareeha. (Lena laughs so hard she cries and adds more absurd death ideas to her post on the message board.)

Angela, meanwhile, is calmly sitting in a chair sipping tea because she has chosen to ignore the show entirely, knows little to nothing of it, and until the day she dies the only thing she can tell you is that she's pretty sure Fareeha killed Genji.
