I was so tempted to only write the first scene, so so tempted, or also to write a third scene, but... two scenes it is. A bit tired for three, but just the one felt too much like a bad end.

Moon Big doesn't work in this au, but that doesn't mean there cannot be a differently terrible end to round eight...

GeminiTay, and the end of (a piece of) the world

"Gem, we need to leave."

Gem looks over at False, busy strapping bags to herself. There is a portal looming between them, one to False's personal bunker two continents away. A few weeks ago Gem had helped decorate it, but now…

"Do we, though?" Gem asks, gazing outside. Everything still looks so normal, bar the slight red haze over the moon. "It's still so peaceful, and it's not been very long at all."

"Trust me," False begs of her. "The Forces of Evil will be here, soon. I know it's shorter when you studied, but just look at the moon."

A moon, just very slightly red.

"There's more time, yet," Gem tells her, even as her gut squirms. "There always is."

"Xisuma doesn't always realise in time, you've got to look out for yourself," False stops, putting a bag on a counter and leaning her weight on it. "Trust me, I know. You get a feeling for it."

False isn't the first to leave, either, depending on what you call leaving; a few disappeared without goodbyes, already, and at least one tried - and failed - to fight.

It probably isn't coincidence that those who had worked for the university longest were the first to leave, but at the same time… Gem would feel even worse if she left /and/ she was wrong. She knows perfectly well that heroism is not about getting oneself killed, but equally it is not about backing down early. A large part of it is learning when one can do no more good, and backing out gracefully. Death is possible, but being stupid about it isn't necessary.

Gem doesn't think she's being stupid, no matter the expression on False's face as she says "when you come to your senses, you know where I'll be" and vanishes through the portal.

A week later, the sky is burning as flaming rocks fall from the heavens, and Gemini can no longer see the sun. At first it had been from the barrier in place, the runes teacher having traveled to the highest peak and cast from there. The metallic-blue shield had shattered, though, and nobody has heard from that man - they haven't even had time to look.

Nor to think of a better plan than mimicking an obviously flawed one on a larger scale; there were fiery rocks raining from the sky, after all.

Everyone left capable of casting a shield stands in the courtyard, granting time for the others to run. Sacred and Rune magic fuse in the heavens, melding into a transparent yet swirling shield. The Forces of Evil have not attended in person at all, but the aerial bombardment of meteors keeps hammering on the shield. Gem's hair sticks to her face and neck, not used to holding a shield so large or so long. Xisuma and Wels seem the best off of the group of them, but Gem knows it is only a matter of time.

She isn't the first to give up, but neither is she the last. Gem knows, however, that she needs to make it to the portal, and she knows her limits. She wasn't always a hero - she barely passed those classes - but Xisuma told her he wanted her to do it. To teach the students to be better, to not throw their lives away.

Gem looks up at the sky, at the fading barrier, at the meteors falling on them - and then she looks at Wels.

He gives her the slightest nod, and turns back to the task.

There are still a handful of people left, but it gets harder each time. Gem wonders, for a moment, who will be the last - who will be left without the cover of a shield as they retreat, at the mercy of the sky rocks and the debris.

It won't be here.

Gem tries not to think stupid thoughts of how it should have been her - she was new to the university, the headmaster and the department head very specifically told her to do nothing stupid like sacrifice herself, she is the poster-child for a new sort of heroism, one people actually might survive.

And so she runs.

She runs, and runs, and once is too tired to run she stumbles, and as she makes it to the portal the entire shield turns metallic blue - one of the runecasters is last, then, nobody from her department. The headmaster, perhaps, or one of the others she doesn't know as well. This cycle has been shorter than she was told to expect; she only knows so many of her colleagues and only so well.

It's a little surprising to find False's portal still open, given everything that happened; Gem was expecting to need to enchant it on her own.

So Gem just grabs her bag from beside it, and pushes herself through.

Through, and out.

Purple magic shatters behind her, and the first thing to greet her is a surprised meow.

The second are the arms which catch her - scoop her up - as exhaustion makes jelly of her knees.

Kirby and the Purple Butterfly Chapter 3

It had now been a month since Rifty had arrived in Dream Land, and he had already become quite acquainted with all the people who lived there. Everyday, Kirby and Rifty would love to take walks throughout the Waddle Dee Village together, and people would always give them the best of greetings. However, the people of Dream Land were quite fascinated by Rifty, everyone had wanted to learn just a little more about him. Rifty was very overwhelmed by the constant flow of questions they received from Waddle Dees, Waddle Doos, Noddies, and others alike, but Kirby would always be there to help Rifty out when he needed it.

On one sparkly night, it was foretold that a meteor shower was gonna happen near Pop Star, and that it could be seen from Dream Land! All of the lights in town were dimmed as the dreamlanders gathered together on the rooftops and observatories of the village, while Kirby and his friends got together on one of Castle Dedede’s towers, King Dedede even set up a telescope for Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee, and Rifty to get a better look (with Meta Knight’s help, of course).

“Look at all those stars, Rifty!” Kirby proudly exclaimed. “Aren’t they just beautiful?”

“Wow, shiny…” Rifty was amazed, the stars had never been this clear and visible to him before.

“There’s even a few constellations visible too! Look!” Bandana Waddle Dee proclaimed, pointing out several of the star formations. “There’s the belt of Orion, the Gemini twins, and- oh! I think I can see Taurus from here!”

You couldn’t tell, but Meta Knight smiled from underneath his mask. “Rifty, have you ever heard of zodiac signs before?” he asked, to which Rifty shook their head in response. “Those are special constellations that align with where our planet is correlating with the sun. There are twelve of them, matching with certain times of the year. They say such signs can dictate what someone’s personality is depending on when they were born.” Meta Knight began to explain the hidden meanings behind the stars in the sky, to which Rifty was very fascinated. There was so much about the world he wanted to learn about, so much he had wanted to see.

However, Meta Knight’s lesson would abruptly end thanks to Dedede noticing something.

“I think it’s starting!” he shouted, as tiny stars began to streak the dark skies of Dream Land. The rest of the group quickly gathered around the telescope, taking turns to see the meteor shower up close. It started off small at first, but more and more stars slowly became more visible. Kirby, Rifty, and Bandana Waddle were practically fighting over who got to use the telescope, though the two eventually decided that Rifty would be the one to use it first.

“They look so pretty!” Rifty happily exclaimed. However, they wouldn’t have much time to look at the stars before something strange happened.

All of a sudden, in a burst of light, millions of tiny little stars began shooting across Dream Land from a singular spot in the sky, the slight shockwave it caused knocking Rifty over.

Kirby panicked a little. “Oh no! Are you okay, Rifty?”

“I’m fine! Just got a little startled!”

Meta Knight looked up into the sky with confusion. “That…isn‘t normal.”

“You think? I’m pretty sure the sky doesn’t just burst into stars like that!” Dedede shouted.

The knight began to ponder the current situation. “It doesn’t seem to be causing much harm, however. It’s not like any of the stars are crashing into the town. But what possibly could have caused this?”

“Maybe the stars were just behind schedule?”

“Stars can’t be behind schedule! They’re always right on time!”

Both Bandana Waddle Dee and Kirby quickly started debating stars with each other, forgetting all about the meteor shower.

“Nay, this is certainly no normal meteor shower, this is something else, but I can’t quite tell what.”

“Well, whatever it is, it’s still pretty, right?” Kirby asked, but Meta Knight did not respond.

A couple of days after the mysterious meteor shower, Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee offered to take Rifty to the downtown market to go shopping. There were many things being sold there from many different small shops. Kirby was happily running towards the food court, while Rifty and Bandana Dee followed after him. Their chase would abruptly stop, however, when something caught the attention of almost everyone in town that day!

“Greetings, people of Dream Land!”

A voice could be heard coming from one of the roofs of the shops. It was another knight like Meta Knight! He managed to grab the attention of everyone very quickly.

“Tis I! Sir Quantum Knight! Distant Traveler on a quest for knowledge! I have come from a far off land to make my mark here after hearing word of your beloved planet, for I wish to learn more about it and its culture, as well as defending it from the clutches of evil!”

Everyone was very confused by the knight’s last remark. There hadn’t been any danger in Dream Land for quite some time now. Even Kirby was confused by this, being the danger magnet he was. They all looked at the knight with puzzled expressions.

“…wait, what dost thou mean that there is no evil that lurketh here?”

The villagers affirmed the knight’s query by shaking their heads.

“Uhh, very well then! You shall resume your duties then, as I shall continue to make my observations!”

The knight, rather embarrassed, disappeared as quickly as he arrived. Both Kirby and Bandana Dee were very puzzled by this. They have never heard of a knight such as this before!

“Who was that?”

“I’m not sure, I’ve never heard of a Quantum Knight before.”

“Didn’t they kind of remind you of someone?”

“Who?”

“They kind of looked like Galacta Knight. You know them, right? That knight Meta Knight said he met at some point?”

“Oh yeah! He was very strong, but not as strong as Sir Meta Knight!”

While Kirby and Bandana were discussing the new knight, Rifty was left in their own confusion. The knight had stood out to them, for they looked quite similar to Rifty themselves.

“Rifty, what did you think about the knight?”

“Me? Well, I don’t know who he is, but he looked kind of familiar.”

“Really? Did he remind you of anyone?”

“Not really, but I did think his armor was pretty cool! It had pretty butterflies!”

Bandana Dee then chimed in. “What did you think he was doing here?”

“Well, he did say it himself, he is just here to observe.”

“It sounds pretty suspicious, doesn’t it?”

“Well, not really,” Kirby added. “I mean, exploring planets can be a pretty fun thing to do!”

Even after their conversation, their ideas of the knight still circled around in their heads.

Word of the knight began to rapidly spread across all of Pop Star, even King Dedede and Meta Knight began to become curious about the matter.

“Didja hear about that new knight in town?” Dedede asked while looking out a window from the castle.

Meta Knight turned to look at him from his seat while he was reading a newspaper article about this mysterious new knight. “How could I not? Word of him has spread across the land like a great fire, it is quite bizarre, I must say.”

“What do you think his deal is? The only other knight around here is you, do we really need another one?”

“I know not of his intentions, but I must get to the bottom of this. Something tells me there is more to this ‘Quantum Knight’ than he is willing to admit.”

Before the two could continue, Sword Knight, one of Meta Knight’s loyal knights, quickly burst through the castle doors. “Sir! You must come and see this!”

“What is the matter, Sword Knight?” Meta Knight said as he got out of his seat.

”It’s that new knight! He’s been spotted near the Halberd! Come!”

Sword Knight quickly rushed Meta Knight over to the Halberd’s Hangar in the castle, but there was no knight to be seen!

“S-Sir! I swear I saw him here!”

“There’s no need to apologize, Sword, for I know you are telling the truth. It looks like the knight must have fled once he realized he had been seen.”

While he was talking, Meta Knight had noticed a glint of something from the corner of his eye. He quickly turned around to see what it was, only to find a green butterfly fluttering around some flowers adorned around one of the castle windows.

‘Hmph, I must be seeing things…’ he thought to himself.

Over the course of a couple of weeks, Meta Knight would continually be alerted to sightings of the Quantum Knight, only to arrive with no one present at the scene. No one except for that green butterfly he had seen before. Meta Knight quickly informed his men of the situation as soon as he came to this conclusion.

“This green butterfly must be tied to this knight in some form. If you see it, be sure to keep an eye on it, for it may lead us to finding them.”

“Understood, sir!”

While Meta Knight made his investigation across Dream Land, Quantum Knight continued to travel across the planet, documenting its many interesting locations. However, this knight was not on just a quest to document the planet, he had arrived for a different purpose: Rifty. The knight would always appear wherever Rifty had gone, many of his traces being in areas Rifty had visited, almost going entirely undetected by anyone on Pop Star. Anyone except Rifty themselves! He started catching on to them once Meta Knight had told them about the butterfly sightings, always looking around for them, as if they were gonna catch it! It would take quite some time, however, for the two to finally meet each other in person.

“Just who is that knight? And why does he seem so familiar?” Rifty says to themselves.

Personality: She’s generally pretty reserved, having been raised that was by her family. However she can be extremely stubborn and annoyingly persistent. When in combat she has a flashy and elegant yet reckless fighting style. She’s also extremely versatile and holds the record among the Hashira for mastering the most weapon styles.

History:

Hoshifuru was born as the only daughter to the Miya family. Her father ran a dojo that taught an exclusive fighting style using tonfas. Growing up she was quickly expected to take on the womanly roles of the household learning to cook, clean, and basic manners as young as 5 years old. However part of her was always drawn to the dojo and enjoyed watching the men train, wishing she could do so herself. And so she lived her life like that in quite longing until demons attacked her family when she was only ten. A man with fiery hair rescued them and she was captivated by his strong beautiful movements. She wanted to move like that too. No. She needed to. She finally had a dream she could not let go of. She needed to become a demon slayer like the man right before her eyes.

For the next couple weeks she spent every available minute begging her father to let her train in the dojo along with the boys. After some time he eventually gave in, annoyed by her persistence. However he gave her an ultimatum when he agreed, if she did not perform satisfactorily by the time she turned 15 she would be married off to another family and would never practice martial arts again. The young naïve Hoshifuru had to agreed to this excitedly however her father never had any plans to let her win this deal. Regardless of how skilled she became he would never approve.

For the next five years she trained relentlessly, any time she has away from chores was spent training at the dojo. The day she turned 15 her father had her challenge her older brother to show her prowess. Despite defeating him, the strongest student at the dojo, with a practiced ease, her father still declared her performance unsatisfactory. Hoshifuru was crushed. How could that have not been good enough? And then it dawned on her, her father never planned to let her win this challenge. It was all a cruel scheme to put her in her place. That night she ran away and spent time training in the woods until joining the final selection.

After she finally became a demon slayer, she sought out the man who had saved her so many years ago. It took a while to find him considering so many would rather not get involved with the drunken flame hashira. However once she figured out his whereabouts, she was on his doorstep every day begging to be taken on as his disciple. This was also how she met and befriended dear Kyojuro Rengoku. Every time Hoshifuru came by to beg the flame hashira to teach her Kyojuro would invite her in and offer her tea, and then they’d spar in the back yard.

Eventually the old man relented and made her his student, however it was more in name only. His teachings were either lack luster or so extreme she thought she wouldn’t make it to see the next day. She struggled to master the flame breathing style, and instead created a form all her own that meshed what she had learned from Rengoku and the Miya dojo. Approximately a year after joining the corp, she rose to the rank of hashira after defeating over 50 demons.

Despite being a hashira she rarely attended meetings with the rest of the hashira, either busy with a mission or on the other side of Japan, typically it was the latter. However when she did return she would spend as much time with the others as possible, especially Kyojuro after his father retired. She also eventually took on a Tsugoku of her own. A young snappy boy by the name of Yasu Fugimura. However on a mission together, they encountered a powerful demon with the ability to manipulate people’s perceptions. In the haze of the battle Yasu was killed by her own blade, she didn’t even realize until she had killed the real demon, and saw his body.

After this she became more and more reclusive, rarely ever sleeping through the night. Only spending time alone with fellow Hashira out of fear something like that would happen again. She knew if it did occur one of her fellow Hashira would have no problem stopping her before something bad happened. The only times she found herself sleeping peacefully was when completely and utterly exhausted or next to Kyojuro.
