Nico and Angie have their daughter when he’s around 36 and she’s 33.

The question of children had always been a sensitive subject for the couple, both of them wanting a family, but unsure of how to start one.

The conversation is quite delicate because even though he's expressing a desire to have a child, she interprets it as him expecting her to sacrifice her dreams for his. This leads her to often avoid the conversation because she feels guilty about not being able to fulfill his wishes.

Angie loves the idea of having a little her and him running around, but every time the conversation comes up it always seems like pregnancy and having a baby starts with the end of her career. Her hesitancy falls within not being ready to give up her dreams just yet, but also she feels a lot of societal pressure to have babies from not only the media around her but a lot of the women who surround her, so she is very at a crossroads.

It leads to a lot of relationship turmoil. But then, one day, he listens, steps back, and acknowledges that he's been going about it the wrong way. He realizes that he hasn't been explaining or telling her that he'd never want her to quit her career. They talk, and for once they are both communicating. He tells her that he would never ask her to give up the thing she's been working towards her whole life. Instead, he brings up the option of adoption and expresses his willingness to retire so that they could start a family together.

They adopt Olive Josephine Chandler-Hischier at the end of the 2035 seasonn when she's around three months old!!

Olive brought such a sense of completion to their marriage too, it was already perfect, but Olive was like the missing puzzle piece that they didn't even know they were searching for. She's made their little family feel whole in a way never imagined possible.

Angie was very scared of motherhood, she isn't a soft or nurturing person in any way shape or form, but when Olive came into her life it was like a switch flipped and everything made more sense. She is a mama bear for sure, and all of the pieces just kinda came together to form the most beautiful bond with her daughter!!

Nico is just enamoured with her, he took to the role so naturally. Watching Olive's little face light up when she sees him it's like all the worries of the world just melt away for him, the unsureness that lies within their lifestyle disappears

Angie was scared about the balance that would come with work and motherhood, but that all withered away when Olive was brought into her life, seeing how supportive Nico is and loving this little ball of sunshine has made all the difference.

Being parents has also created such a sweet and domestic routine in their lives, they love just being parents and their lives revolve around Olive. It's such a change too, from their constant being about hockey to being able to step away from the competition and begin to focus on loving this little life that they brought into theirs.

Nico is the emotional of the two, and Angie is the more logical. He's the worrier, she's the one that calms him down. It's such an interesting dynamic where the societal expectations of gender roles are reversed!!

They love their new life though, they live in New Jersey during the season, Nico coaches a local junior team, Angie plays with the Devils still, and Olive gets to grow up in a city that her parents love. They vacation in Switzerland, Nico continues to play worlds in the summers, and they train together in Michigan!!

Olive is a very stern and stubborn baby just like her mama, she may not be biologically theirs but she inherits all of their traits and mannerisms including her mama's frown and dad’s shy smile.

The main thing that comes out of their journey into parenthood is that Olive comes before everything else. That may be obvious, but it's an important thought process they both took on when she came into their lives. No game, no Championship, and no team is above her, she is always the focus in their lives and to them it's important the people around them know that

Regarding the Duke by Grace Callaway

I have a new favorite Grace Callaway! Amnesia, as a trope, is very hit or miss for me... but when it hits, it really hits. What also hits? A stern, revenge-driven man who can't admit that he's in love, AND a marriage in trouble, and that same man completely breaking down when he realizes that he was So Wrong About Everything. This book has all of that, plus a very conventionally feminine wife and mother heroine who's so sweet yet also so fun. It's also super, super hot. I had so much fun. I was so Swept Away. It's great.

The Stars Too Fondly by Emily Hamilton

Gays In Space, the book. This is out in June, so I'll give more of my thoughts sometime next month but like... This is billed as a sapphic sci-fi romcom, and I wouldn't say that's WRONG, but there's a lot more to it. Like: grief, mystery, the temptation of running away from reality, and the problem with falling for a hologram. I was really impressed.

Another one that's not out for a while (September, to be exact) but like... A firefighter finds the sad journal of a growly hockey-playing widower and finds herself falling in love? Despite him being unable to offer anything emotional? PLEASE.

The Duke Redemption by Grace Callaway

If there's one thing I love, it's a book where they fuck first and have feelings later. And in this one, they fuck... immediately. Like, within twenty minutes of meeting. But it was a masked orgy situation! And she was hiding her identity due to her hideous (not hideous) scar! And she's a surprise virgin but really good at hiding it! This is a fun gender-flipped Beauty and the Beast situation, with the kind of light mystery Grace Callaway loves, and a hero who literally paces back and forth after finding out he accidentally deflowered this woman (who refuses to marry him) because he's NOT! THAT! GUY! (Anymore.) Also, they have sex in a cage, which I always approve of.

The Return of the Duke by Grace Callaway

Do you like a sweeping marriage of convenience story, with a heroine who needs to be My Fairy Lady'd? Look no further. Severin is looking for the ideal duchess (he has a whole "was raised on the mean streets but found out he was a secret duke" situation) to help him introduce his four(!) illegitimate siblings to high society. Except then he accidentally deflowers (again, love this) a tinker's daughter in the WOODS and is too honorable to NOT marry her, and also she's HOT, so even though he Cannot Love, they'll just have a fun fuck marriage, right? Even if she can't say the "H" sound? Sure. Fancy is actually such a great heroine, and this actually works very well in a way that I think a lot of books with this scenario wouldn't. And it's HOT, with a third act reveal that's so bonkers it's delightful.

The Trouble with Inventing a Viscount by Vivienne Lorret

Another ARC, so I'll stay somewhat tight-lipped. But suffice to say--this is about a hot girl who knows she's a hot girl (how refreshing) conning a con man, only to have him show up a year later pretending to be the long-lost viscount she's been betrothed to since infancy. And he's fully prepared to scam his way all the way to the altar, whether they like it or not. This has the single most insane erotic eating (not that, literally eating food) scene I have ever read in my life. Like, they're having a picnic, but it feels like he's hitting it raw. I was. So happy.

they can't kill us until they kill us by hanif abdurraqib i have mentioned On Here before that hanif is my favorite poet, but he is also my favorite music writer and one of my favorite nonfiction writers in general. this collection of essays about music and culture is intimate, devastating, hopeful, gorgeous; i return to it often.

the book thief by marcus zusak speaking of books that are devastating and gorgeous! this novel is also a masterclass in point of view.

beartown by fredrik backman i AM a backman fan in general but beartown's my favorite for obvious reasons (it's a hockey book, lmao). i have NOT read the two sequels yet because i'm afraid of how much they're going to hurt my feelings but one of my goals for this winter is to finally do that.

evvie drake starts over by linda holmes a thing about me is that i mostly do not like contemporary romance novels. HOWEVER, i love this book. the characters are richly drawn, the setting does the whole small town thing without feeling like a cliche, the emotional arcs are cathartic.

the farseer trilogy by robin hobb teen becky was obsessed with these books and adult becky has been saying for years she's gonna reread them for the purposes of finally reading the last trilogy in this fantasy universe, but being a little nervous about it because what if they don't hold up? but multiple people with trusted taste have picked them up recently and enjoyed them so i finally did start that reread and i'm having a GREAT time.

the last best league by jim collins i told myself i was only allowed to pick one nonfiction sports book for this list, lol, so this is the one. breezy summer baseball read! i literally read it on a beach the first time i read it, and that was perfect.

she who became the sun/he who drowned the world by shelley parker-chan drags hands down face the GENDER of it all!!!!!!!!! i read the first one early this year and the second one the moment i could get me hands on it and am 99% sure this duology will be my favorite thing i read this year.

michigan vs. the boys by carrie s. allen i did not expect to like this book as much as i did, because i have mostly outgrown YA (with exceptions!) and because i usually find first-person present tense really grating. but i fell in love with this little story about a girl determined to play on the boys' team. it helped a lot that the author REALLY knows her hockey stuff, and clearly loves the game.

reading like a writer by francine prose as a habitual devourer of anything about ~writing craft~ this was one of the first craft books young becky ever read, and i still think it's one of the best. maybe that's because i imprinted on it, but flipping through it just now when i pulled it off the shelf for this list made me want to reread it, so maybe it will do that soon.

Telling YOU🫵🏼 abt my upcoming FanComic!-

(Introduction post!-)

The AU and series as a whole is called Sm1ling.TMNT or S.TMNT for short, like a file name. It is still in production but lemme tell you a little about it!-

It’s a TMNT fancomic set in the year 2023 except it’s a little different. The early 2000s and 2010s instead of the nostalgic era going out of style it basically stayed and is mixed with the modern day setting of this comic. Flip phones are still widely used, MySpace is still a thing, YouTube looks the way it was meant to before all the updates but with modern day functionality. They also have advanced technology that is waaaay farther into the future than what we today know. Just don’t tell them that their fav things went out of style years ago, they’ll have a crisis.

It’s a little confusing but trust me it’s cool!-

The comic is also set from two completely different perspectives. It’s also filled with bunch of angst, funny moments, gore(I’m a horror artist so obviously there’s gotta be some blood and guts), action, romance >:].. THE WHOLE SHABANG!- yk all written and drawn by yours truely! This comic also touches lightly on topics like racist, sexism, xenophobia, bigotry,the topic of beauty standards and much more but it’s not the main focus and most of the time characters that act out these issues they get…taken care of- if yk what I mean >:3

Fn let me introduce you to our main cast of characters! Well…the important ones (with pictures but I apologize they’re wildly unfinished, brace yourself this is gonna be a little long)

Griffin B. Corduroy (Juliet >:])

Griffin! Griff is a jokingly egotistical character who seems to know her worth to others and has a “don’t give a fuck” attitude to compliment her girly girl appearance(peak feminism). In reality she’s extremely temperamental with bad anger issues along with has past of issues with trichotillomania, dealing with stress, and body confidence issues. She’s on her own healing journey but it seems she’s doing it her own way…..(she is an original character)

“APRIIIIIIL (L.) O’NEIL!!—”

April!! Our true detective and best big sister!(and older cousin to Griffin) a chilled out personality complimented by her caring attitude makes her like the mom of the group second to Leo despite being older than him. A little awkward in social situations (she is NOT a cool kid) can bring her to being slightly challenged with the turtles shenanigans as she’s prone to panicking but she’s working on it. Despite being an only child she did not grow up a lonely child, meeting both the turtles and her little cousin Griff at 9 which seemed not connected at the time later to be revealed like a butterfly effect as every event around it continues.

Casey and CJ (New Yorks Vigilantes)

Cassandra! Cassandra(also known as ‘Cass’ or more commonly ‘Casey’ despite the nickname being her little brothers first name) is a stoic teenager with a soft side. She’s slightly soft spoken with a masculine appearance yet feminine tone and often gets confused by others with her gender when in reality it doesn’t matter what they interpret her as, as she’s gender-fluid! She seems most comfortable and commonly referred to with she/her pronouns but finds it extremely flattering when called ‘handsome’ or referred to in a masculine sense. She’s a hockey player by day and a badass rollerblading vigilante by night. She is a strong woman and role model hopefully for others as well as her baby brother CJ especially after she got them out of an abusive household.

Little Casey!- Casey (also known as CJ) is Cassandra’s partner in justice as well as her baby brother! He’s a big boy meaning he’s four years old and goin strong!- his biggest role model is his big sister and he’s happy about it. She’s his favorite superhero!- if you see Casey you’ll see CJ as they’re always together and Casey never lets him out of her sight. Not after what they had to go through. He’s a good mannered rambunctious kid with a lot of energy. He wants to be just like his big sister that’s why he has his ears pierced as he was tired of wearing sticker earrings and wanted real ones. Casey was a little nervous about this at first but he took it like a champ when she pierced his ears. CJ also likes to help around Casey’s job! He pretends to sweep the floors and wipe down counters when he’s with her at her job at the tattoo shop she works at as a piercer. Casey’s boss loves having him around.

Sensei(Master) Splinter

Yoshi! Once a rat in a pet store being taken care of with the bare minimum only to be thrown to the garbage bin when they thought he was dead for sleeping for too long. Now a humble street rat getting chased by everything around it until a little boy at the name of Yoshi. He got a new name his name was splinter but one day it was changed…the day Yoshi left him was the day he was renamed “Hamato Yoshi” the same as his own that he once had to remember him by as he was dumped down a sewer. But that was years ago….. That year he was blessed with his four sons that made up their odd little family. He seen what Yoshi did for him before he left so he followed in the nurturing steps of the only father he’s ever known. Yoshi is still with him in spirit of course. They are interlinked through the name they share an their soul connection not only as owner and pet but father and son. Yoshi’s spirit began watching splinter raise the turtles when they became tots as that’s when he passed. He warned splinter of a terrible danger and that’s when Splinter began to learn the ways of the Hamato with the help of Yoshi’s spiritual guidance and then taught his sons as well. Past his sad and empowering backstory he’s a silly old man that loves his boys and paints in his free time (reason to why the boys have their names)

Hamato Leonardo

Leonardo! Leo(also referred to as ‘Leon’, ‘Nardo’, ‘Lame-o-nardo’ etc) is the eldest of four siblings total and the eldest of him and his brother Donnie who are twins. Don’t be fooled by his serious older brother front he’s not like that at all!- He only wears his glasses at home and contacts everywhere else and he has braces! He’s not cool at all, He’s more of a nervous wreck that cracks bad jokes to cope. Being leader is very important to him because it means (to him) he is his little brothers main protectors! He takes his job very seriously but he’s very emotional and emotion driven. A bit of a crybaby when it comes down to it and not often angry but when he is…it can get a little out of control. It took him a while to get his Katanas, how do you think he got that scar! Pretty embarrassing story- there was also the incident…..Rip Raphs tail.

Hamato Donatello(Romeo >;3)

Donatello! Donnie (second eldest of four and youngest of a set of twins) is the obvious brains of the operation but that doesn’t help with the fact he’s little pretentious. He can be very cocky about his inventions and knowledge on things since he obviously sees it as cool and interesting…others…yk not so much- He’s more of a listener than a talker and is mostly quiet when he wants to be so sometimes when he wants to get a word in he has to interrupt others for them to actually listen. He keeps to himself a lot and isn’t the most outgoing but if you get him talking about some form of science (specifically chemistry or technology) you’ll see him as a whole new turtle. He can often be sarcastic even when it’s unintentional he doesn’t do it to be rude he’s just grown up around idiots so he does it to make a point (he loves his brothers I promise) though he’s not traditionally boyish usually he definitely has stereotypical male interests (which goes against his personality in some of his other versions in media) one of which is him being a huge sports fan especially basketball. Him and his brothers often go out at night to some empty courts and play. He’s alike his brothers in the ways of personality especially table manners…there’s almost zero. Absolute pigs they are- despite being turtles

Hamato Raphael (sorry he’s super unfinished)

Raphael! The rebellious middle child- Raph is nonchalant and confident in his fighting ability but since he’s very anger prone he’s not listened to as much when it comes to plans but that’s okay…since most of his plans are extremely bad(he’s not really good at organizing) despite his rugged and intimidating look(he’s built like a linebacker I’d be scared too bruh) and nature he’s not all that mean. He knows sometimes he can get a little too angry and needs to tone it back a bit he’s working on it. He’s more of a stereotypical asshole character more of a bully than anything but honestly it’s his way of affection most of the time. Unless it’s Mikey. Mikey pisses him off sometimes. (He still loves him tho-) he’s a tough lover but when it comes to animals or kids he’s a big softy. He’s also very patient with others it’s surprising. Especially Mikey since he’s disabled and needs some extra time on certain things. Raph is genuinely caring when it comes to his family.

Hamato Michelangelo

Michelangelo!1!1! The party dude of the group of course!- (also known as ‘MC Mikey’ and ‘the triple threat’) hes the definition of annoying younger sibling but in a lovable way- he can be a bit rude when joking with but it’s natural seeing who he’s grown up with. He doesn’t mean any harm by it genuinely it’s in an endearing way. He’s super active and flexible since he’s hyper mobile but it depends on the day since he’s invisibly disabled! (Like me! We have the same condition) He has A.M.P.S [insert orange ribbon] and it stands for Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome and it’s exactly how it sounds. It’s amplified and generalized chronic pain throughout the body without an actual source. It happens basically because the spine sends a pain signal to the brain like how it would when there’s tissue damage except there’s no cause for said pain single just causing intermediate or constant chronic pain anywhere in the body. He’s learned to live with his disability and for it not to get the better of him but he does hold back from running a lot like across buildings and just uses his rocket board Donnie has built for him. He also constantly does physical therapy throughout the week and takes some medication that Donnie gives to him throughout certain periods of the day so he stays out of constant pain. Past that he acts on impulse as any younger sibling would and usually gets saved by the scute of his shell by his older brothers. Despite this he can very well handle his own. He’s a strong fighter and an absolute tank! He’s a big dude and has an insanely high pain tolerance, reason to why he has the most tattoos despite being the youngest. despite him not being as strategic as his brothers or even his opponent his outside the box thinking is what makes him so good.

Project Genocide. (Hamato Jennika)

Jennika. With a cog heart that ticks and barely beats on its own, it’s still made of gold…sort of

Project genocide was created as a gift for the Shredder by Baxter Stockman. A show of gratitude for his life being saved despite how he was trying to steal from the shredder. Though she was rushed and taken out of her test tube too early. Upon trying to breathe her lung immediately collapsed and filled with fluid, so she eventually died within a matter of minutes of being alive. She was then taken apart out of panic like some object and her organs got modified and individually preserved in a gelatin like substance that held them in place. Her head was put into a jar and a tube as her esophagus as she inhales the fluid in her jar that in which it’s the only thing she can safely breathe. She became this Frankenstein like creature but she could still feel and live like anyone else she just looked….different. She had her life support built into her and with the small flip of a switch she was alive again. She’d never be able to grow on her own or develop mentally forever stuck at age thirteen but she was alive. She is programmed to be a ruthless killing machine and follow orders..gaining her name Jennika stemming from her project name ‘Genocide’. Despite being a literal jarhead she’s swift and ruthless. She’s unmatched compared to some of the highest ranking foot soldiers she was perfect…so she was immediately marked by the foot..the branding hurt but it’s not like she hasn’t felt worse, right? She has built in Tekkō-kagi as a sort of homage to the shredder. They come from in between her knuckles. They were almost used to behead the youngest of the four she was modeled after and created to kill. But…what if she didn’t want to….?

Well maybe you’ll just have to read the comic when it comes out to answer your questions!!! EHEHEHHE 😈

In Knights and Pawns, does Terry feminize Daniel? I mean, the lingerie for the wedding night. The jewelry. Daniel being the traditional homemaker. Or is it just an innate thing in Omegas, specifically male Omegas? I feel like Daniel not only is okay with this, or Terry being the head of the household, but also encourages it in his own way. Is Daniel submissive to Terry outside of the bedroom, like in household matter la for example? Like, Terry will get the final say, and Danny has to run by whatever it is with him.

Hi Nonnie, I see the whole omegaverse trope as "let's fuck around with gender roles and see what happens." My only set rules are: omegas actually are caring and nurturing and sweet the way they want all women to be, and Alphas don't have to work at all the Real Man things, they are Like That, and now let women be Like That and men inclined to nurture and care and see what happens... plus I also try to write Daniel the way he seems to be around Amanda? Man is flirty, the little spoon, loves to serve people food, gets his cheeks pinched, defers to his wife, and then sometimes he flips that and demolishes a hockey team. But I still bet that if you gave him lipstick and frilly lingerie he'd rock it. Love it. Daniel is ok with Terry being head of the household same way he's fine with Amanda being head of the household in canon. Some people think I render omega Daniel not submissive enough, some may think it's too much, I simply try to picture what feels right to me in any situation. I do know that when Daniel is being openly extremely submissive to Terry in public that is code. It's a trick. But people wouldn't know it because some omegas are that servile. Terry's not into it - he likes brats - but it exists! Some people would not even have minded being told who to marry by their parents.

Daniel would work, but looking at how that dealership is run in canon... that's not his shop. He's there to charm people and look pretty. Sure he knows the business and he can roleplay Boss Man with Amanda standing on the side mouthing "Good boy, Daniel!" But Amanda is Terry light, I feel. Terry wants final say on everything he doesn't even think about it. Whatever you want from Terry you have to ask permission for that's just how he is. "No" is simply code for "Ah, I need to push a bit harder". If Daniel wants something and asks nicely, he can have it almost always. Terry loves saying: "of course babe!" and pinching his cheek. And Daniel enjoys that too.

So, I just watched withcindy's video about this whole scandal between BookTok and the Seattle Kraken team and... I have some things to say about all this.

Before we start I want to mention that I'll be touching upon topics such as catcalling, sexism towards men, and grown women not willing to take accountability for their actions. If you find any of these topics upsetting, I would advise you against reading this and hope you have a nice rest of your day.

We'll be talking about Kierra Lewis, a known BookTok member, also known as the woman who keeps on "humorously simping" over the members of the Seattle Kraken team.

She makes this videos with pictures of them in the background while saying things like "Why don't you assist your teammates in scoring all three of my holes?", "What's a sister gotta do to have you crack this back?" or "When you're done playing your little game go spit out that mouthpiece 'cause I got something else to put in your mouth".

Kierra also catcalls them on videos where they're warming up, saying things like "Best believe, after seeing them stretches, I'm going to every hockey practice, every game, early as hell", or "When I saw it [the video] for the first time, me and the kitty was drooling at the same time".

Far from thinking this woman was disgusting and calling her out for sexually harassing their players, the team decided to go along with it and began posting more and more videos of the players so she, and all the other women she had inspired to do such atrocious things, could keep on going. Actually, they even rewarded Kierra inviting her to one of their games and gifting her a personalised jersey.

As I just said, many other women took her as an example and began catcalling the players. Some even took it further and went into their DMs.

It was then when Felicia, one of the team's players' wife, decided to come out and defend her husband stating that "There has been videos and comments made that have crossed the line and sound pretty predatory and exploiting [···] I don't care about the comments about my husband's looks, what doesn't sit with me is when your desires come with sexual harrasment, innapropiate comments and the fact that with the internet we can normalize behavior that would never be okay if we flipped the genders around".

Kierra proceeded to "defend herself" by saying that everything she had done was for entertainment purposes, that it was a TikTok thing and, thus, it shouldn't be taken seriously. Besides, she had gotten the support from other women in these player's lives!

Now again, let's do what Felicia said and flip the genders around. Imagine this is a grown ass man excusing himself from catcalling all these female athletes simply because he "did it for the funsies". And besides, men in their lives were okay with his comments so it's a-okay for him to do whatever he wants!

It isn't funny at all, is it? People would instantly cancel him and every single person who dared support this asshole. But since it's a woman with men, well...

Why don't we just go and harass the victim's wife, shall we?

These are some of the comments directed towards Felicia. As you can see, they're accusing her of being insecure about her relationship which... huh? Babe, she's just defending her partner from people who are literally sexually harassing him and his teammates. I think that's actually pretty... decent of her? Pretty human? But eh, not like you would know about ethics, am I right?

There's something that Cindy said about this that I would like to quote. She says "Maybe other people are feeling insecure about being called out for sexual harassment and, instead of being embarrased, they're projecting that onto the woman who called their shit out". YOU 👏 ARE 👏 A 👏 QUEEN 👏 BABE.

Eventually, the team ended up unfollowing Kierra and deleting the videos after shit got wild. The fact that they waited for so long, though... Honestly, shame on them. She also mentions this author who's been writing a spicy book with Alex as her inspiration like WTF? This woman was also the one who shared the video I mentioned before, and even had the guts to tag him on it. What a lovely human, isn't she?

The harassment levels were so bad Alex had to come out to defend Felicia stating that "I'm all in for BookTok to write books and fiction about hockey, but the aggresive language about real life players is too much [···] We can all take a joke and funny comments, but when it turns personal and into something bigger that affects our family, we need to tell you we have had enough".

I can only imagine the pain these two people (along with their child/ren) must have been going through just because a bunch of grown ass women cannot accept the fact they're in the wrong thinking that since, and only since, Alex's team is a masculine one, any sort of sexual harassment towards them gets invalidaded.

And that is my main complain with all this shit; double standards and the team players being treated as objects simply because these women have had only considered them as the face of their preferred love interest in whichever Y/N or OC story they've reading or writing.

It's okay if you thirst over fictional characters and whatnot, but it's different when the object of your desires is a real life person. You should then have in mind that they're a breathing human being who has a life, friends, family and even partners. And even if they don't, they'll always have the right to deny consent or to give it and then revoke it whenever they feel like it. And so do the people who surround them.

You have no right to call out Felicia because she was okay with people calling her husband handsome and she now complains about yall's disgusting behavior. Just get down of your high horses and take the fucking accountability y'all been needing for a long ass time.

Personality: Teke is quiet and introverted, while also seemingly cold, no pun intended. His communication style is a little shorter so that those who are unfamiliar with him might think he’s rude, however, he just likes to be clear, concise, and get to the point. 

  He’s very observant and often takes the time to make sure that those around him are taken care of, especially if they’re too busy to take care of themselves, yet will never make a fuss about it. He’ll often be silent during activities together, disappear for a bit, and then come back with food, water, or whatever else the other people in the group need. He does this without prompting, without anyone asking. He is classic “tsundere” of being cold, nearly aloof, and nearly silent, but learning about those around him, and those that he cares about and doing whatever he can to provide for them and bring them comfort.

Over the time that I have known him he has started to chat with me more often, but it takes time, patience, and trust on both parts for him to get comfortable enough to talk with you without prompting.

Balance & Swing

Will is trying very hard to convince himself that the knot behind his ribcage is for his sister and not himself. It’s an easy sell, mostly because he is anxious for her–it’s Brigid’s first time playing a whole set at the Belfast Contra, and he’d promised her he’d make the drive up after practice. He’s running late, even though he’d made it out of Faber in record time (without rising to the bait of any of his teammates’ chirps, he might add), and that’s making him anxious too. He’s got too much energy for the three-and-a-half-hour drive; it’s spilling over in the tapping of his left toe beside the clutch and the way his fingertips flutter against the wheel, tracking the beat of the East Pointers song rolling out of the speakers. 

He gets to the dance half an hour late, throwing the truck into park at the end of the block and running to let himself into the hall. A dance is just coming to a close as he fishes a crumpled five-dollar bill and his student ID out of the pocket of his jeans to pay his entry. It’s Patty Masters at the door tonight, and she beams at the sight of Will and gets up to come around the table and embrace him. 

“It’s so good to see you back, Will,” she gushes. “We don’t see enough of you Poindexters these days, now you’re all so grown up. Except Brigid, of course. She’s doing so well, you know–we’re all so proud of her.” 

Will grins, disentangling himself from her hug. “Yeah, I’m proud of her too,” he says, and means it. “I’m glad I could make it.” Patty smiles widely and squeezes his shoulder. 

“Go get dancing,” she says, and Will does.

Many of the regulars remember him, or at least deduce from the context clue of his flaming hair that he “must be one of the Poindexter boys.” His parents haven’t come dancing in years, since his dad threw his back out and started saving his energy for work. The Poindexter kids and their cousins had kept coming, though, until work or school pulled them away, and Will gets grins and friendly greetings as he spins up and down the set. He’s a little rusty, but it comes back to him as he goes, the same way his hockey technique does after summer training. He’s dancing the lead, despite his lack of practice and despite the fact that this dance had sunsetted gendered dance parts nearly three years ago (right around when Will’s parents had stopped coming, now that he thinks about it), because John Poindexter would–in technical terms–flip his shit if he knew one of his sons was dancing the woman’s part. 

By the end of the dance, he’s just starting to breathe hard and he’s remembered how to twirl his partner in and out of their swings. She thanks him for the dance as they clap for the band and holds her hands up for a double high-five. The set dissolves around them as he accepts the high-five, rearranging into a new line for the next dance. Will turns to find another partner–and nearly collides with Matt Hallowell. 

His stomach does a flip and doesn’t stick the landing, and he lets out a very unmanly squeak of surprise. Matt’s gotten taller, if that’s even possible, and grown his dark hair out long enough to pull it into loose bun, and there’s a small silver ring glinting in the lobe of his right ear. 

“Shit, Matt,” Will says, trying to save face. “Give a guy a little warning next time.”

“Good to see you too, Will,” Matt replies, his voice warm and amused. “May I have this dance?” It’s a needlessly formal phrasing, but one that brings a grin to Will’s face. 

He wants to say yes–he’s danced with Matt before without suffering for it–but the thought prickles uneasily along his skin like it always does and he scans the hall briefly before he responds. Aside from Brigid, who sits casually on her stool onstage with her fiddle tucked under her chin, Will is the only Poindexter in the room. That doesn’t mean he’s one hundred percent safe–half these people know his parents–but it probably means he’s safe enough. No one ever remembers, the day after the dance, exactly who danced with whom.

He looks back up at Matt, who’s making a valiant effort not to let his cheerful expression flag, and says, “Yeah, alright.”

She loves wrapping gifts. She takes great care in making sure her gifts look nice, because the presentation is just as important as what’s inside. She keeps a small stock of wrapping papers, gift bags, ribbon, and tags so that she can mix and match appropriately depending on the person. while birthdays are her favorite thing to do gifts for, the process of wrapping presents is her favorite part of Christmas.

She drinks coffee in the mornings. She’ll drink it during the earlier hours of the day as it helps her wake up. In the afternoon and evening, she’ll make a cup of tea as it helps calms her and puts her in a more relaxed mood.

Her grandfather used to restore old gumball machines and he would let Chloe sit at his work bench and help. He would give her little jobs and let her use his tools and paints to make her own ‘creations’.

Chloe is fairly new to Merrock, having only been here for a few months because of a job opportunity that she couldn’t turn down. She’s originally from Berkeley although she’d been living in New York City for the past few years before moving. As a result, almost everyone she meets in the windy city would be fairly new to her. Chloe doesn’t have trouble making new friends. She seems fairly high-strung and tightly wound, but most of that is from the pressure she’s put herself related directly to making her family proud and feeling like she wasn’t worthy of her fiance who was from a far more influential family than she was. She has a deep-seated need to succeed and she can get too wrapped up in that.

Once you get past that initial opinion of her, she’s actually a very warm person. She’s very friendly, the type to offer a stranger a compliment in the grocery store for no reason and really enjoys the process of getting to know people. She likes collecting friends although she’s happiest with a group of tight-knit people she can spoil. She takes joy in putting a smile on the faces of the people she cares about and helping them solve any problems they may have. She has a long streak of rationality and she’s empathetic which makes her a very good person to have by your side in a crisis. And to be honest, she loves being the supportive shoulder.

On the other hand, she can be very rigid. She has very strong opinions of people and holds onto snap judgments made until proven otherwise. She can be very single-minded, especially when it comes to the things she feels she needs to do and she can stress herself out about it. She’d really benefit from meeting someone who can counter this and pull her out of her head when she gets too stressed out, although she wouldn’t turn down any type of support system at this point.

Oh yes!

Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Carter is a great one. It's high heat in the very beginning (VERY hot) and then towards the end, because the couple meets at a Halloween party in the beginning, has a one night stand in her best friend's guest bedroom, and then has to deal with an oops baby. They're kind of a slow burn from there, but when it's happening... it's happening. And the tension is INSANE. Otherwise very warm and fuzzy.

Julie Soto writes high heat books with some angst but overall warm feelings, very emotional and like a good romcom movie. Forget Me Not is focused on a uptight wedding planner who ends up having to work with her ex situationship on an important wedding (he's a tattooed florist). Chef's Choice by TJ Alexander. This one has a woman agreeing to fake date a French heir to a massive fortune (in exchange for money) while he competes in an ancient family cooking competition. Yes. It's a slow burn, and the heat is more towards the end, but it's GOOD. Both leads are trans. Triple Sec has a good bit more heat (it's hoooot), and it's a healthy, surprisingly cozy poly romance in which a bartender begins dating a hot sparkly lawyer who practices ethical non-monogamy with her wife... Only to start having feelings for the brooding artist wife as well. F/F/NB.

If you're open to college sports romances (it actually transitions to the NFL in the second book), Kristen Callihan's Game On series gives me the warm fuzzies, and it's SUPER hot. Especially The Friend Zone, which is one of the only friends to lovers books that super works for me. That.... has a thing that we don't see enough of in m/f romance ;))))) a think that provokes the hero to beg she does it to him on birthdays, weekends, every Tuesday, etc etc. Just don't tell The Guys! The Hook Up and The Hot Shot are also really good.

Reckless by Stella Rhys is so under-appreciated. It's a little angsty at points, but it's so HOT and really has a great relationship between the hero and heroine. She's his assistant, but she's also like, his best friend and his work wife. Then she finds out her fiance is cheating when they're on a work trip, and he says something he shouldn't.... but he should... but the workplace violations lol... and we're off to the races from there.

The Prospects by KT Hoffman is a really fun m/m baseball romance with a trans hero (the first openly trans man in the Minor Leagues). He ends up having to play with a guy he was friends with when they were younger who just ditched him, and we quickly go from rivals to lovers to something more. A bit more of a slow burn again, but the heat is GOOD. Very warm and fuzzy.

Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid and The Long Game, its direct sequel. My go-to comfort read, an m/m hockey romance that heats up in the very beginning and doesn't let up from there. SUPER hot. A forbidden, hidden affair. But also a ton of sweetness. A TON.

The Worst Guy by Kate Canterbary. A pair of surgeons who hate each other begin a no-strings, sex only situationship while they're in workplace mediation, lol. Refreshing too in that they're both in their late thirties/forties. Very sweet.

You, Again by Kate Goldbeck. A gender-flipped When Harry Met Sally, in which a stiff (haha) chef who just wants to settle down hates the stand-up comedian he meets when they're seeing the same girl (her way less seriously than him). They're enemies at first, then become friends over the years... and maybe more...

American Royalty by Tracey Livesay. Really fun—an uptight prince of England has to organize a charity concert and invites a famous rapper/upcoming mogul. But.... they really want each other.

The reader was just out for a routine check of the grounds when they get all caught up, literally.

You weren’t exactly expecting your day to turn out like this. All you had planned to do was go on a routine check around the camp grounds to make sure no campers were hiding in the woods instead of being in their cabins for the next activity of the day. Everything was going normally until you felt a rope tighten around your ankle, pulling you up unexpectedly, hitting your head hard on the ground as it hung you upside down. You groaned and grabbed your head, your eyesight going slightly blurry for a moment from the impact. Well shit, an animal trap caught you. Hey at least it worked, you thought to yourself for a moment. You tried to reach for a pocket knife in your pocket to cut you loose, only for it to slip out of your pocket and fall to the ground, just barely out of your reach. Ok, now was the time to panic a bit. “Help!” You called out, “I’m trapped! Someone help get me down!”

Your voice echoed throughout the woods, unlikely traveling far enough for anyone to hear. You tried to maneuver yourself into a position so that your head wasn’t completely upside down, not wanting to pass out from blood flowing to your head and rendering you even more helpless. You curled yourself up by gripping your hips as tightly as you could before calling out again. “Can anybody hear me?! I need to be cut down from a trap!” You tried to be a little louder this time, desperately hoping anyone would somehow hear you even the tiniest bit. “Okay okay…calm down,” You whispered to yourself “Someone is bound to notice you’re missing soon enough when you don’t come back..” The self reassurance did little to nothing however as you felt your heart beat faster and your arms cramp up from holding yourself up, forcing you to let go for a moment and dangle once again, your head throbbing as you did. Shit this was seriously not good.

Thankfully for you, someone was looking for you. Your very protective, hockey mask and machete bearing boyfriend, who was very used to your punctuality and went looking for you the second he felt you were gone too long. He stalked his way through the woods, scanning the entire area for you. His ears perked up as he heard your voice cry out. You needed help! He started running towards your voice, eager to help you from whatever was causing your distress. Your vision was starting to give out on you as you tried and failed to flip yourself back up, feeling nauseous from hanging there so long, slowly being turned around by the rope. You were facing the tree, close to fully blacking out once Jason found you. He rushed over and scooped you up into one arm before his other sliced the rope with his machete. You gasped and clung to him as your vision slowly returned, letting you see that your boyfriend found you. His eyes were filled with relief as you hugged him tightly, thanking him for helping you and began to explain to him through deep breaths what had happened. He slowly sat down and leaned against the tree trunk, keeping you close to him as the both of you began to calm down from what had just happened. Jason silently vowed to himself he would never let you explore alone from that moment on, determined never to let you get caught up in something like that ever again.
