The misinterpretation around feminism, misogyny and gender equality (Rant ahead)

I’m in my 2nd semester of college and have Gender Sensitization as a subject.

For anyone who doesn’t know what exactly the subject is about, here ya go: “Gender sensitization is about changing behaviour and instilling empathy into the views that we hold about our own and other genders” as wikipedia defines it.

When I first learnt about how we are going to get a subject like this to study, I was excited. (I live in a very gender biased society, and seeing this topic of gender sensitization considered worthy enough of a subject made me happy. Was my society finally getting there???)

Guess what? Nope. Because no matter how many textbooks people read, their actual thinking still remains the same unless they learn from real life.

Our professor, a female, who has been teaching us this subject since the past 3 months, solely around what the book says (yes we got a book for it) and no knowledge of her own, enters the class on one fine Friday and the first thing she says is —

“I guess you all have forgotten you are girls. Girls aren’t supposed to be so loud.”

Everybody deadpans.

“Wasn’t she talking about genders and shit the whole semester and now suddenly we turn into guys for having fun.” Says a girl behind me.

We look over it. Because what do you expect from a middleaged woman who teaches real life issues from textbook definitions.

The class goes on, I don’t listen, because her bullshit views which she adds in between angers me.

Then she talks about misogyny. She talks about how misogyny is being fueled by letting women endorse beauty brands and by letting them feature on magazine covers.

“Letting women be on magazine covers, is objectification” she says. I place down the novel I was reading to listen to what she has to say.

“Magazines sell because pretty women like *enter celebrity names* are on the front page. Nobody sees them as people. They see them as objects used for attention and so do the people giving them attention. The revealing clothes? The beautification? Everything is seen as a way of attraction for people. Only when women are helped out of this, will misogyny stop.”

At this point, everybody is confused. (Not that we ever understood her bullshit anyway) and nobody is brave enough to call her out on it. I’d. But she’d get triggered and ask me textbook definitions that I wouldn’t know in a word-to-word manner and then she’d make a big deal out of it. So everyone stays shut.

But is this how kids will get their broken knowledge on gender equality and gender representation?

The country I live in still doesn’t give jobs to the trans community, woman are payed lesser than men even today, the local newspaper has at least 5 news reports about underage girls being raped (which a day later ends with the culprit being free again), 70/100 households still work on the logic of women need to stay at home and take care of their families. In a country like this, if even educational institutions teach you so ignorantly, I wouldn’t want to learn from you at all. My child could learn better from me.

WOMAN EMPOWERMENT

Hi everybody, Lets talk about Woman and Man. But before that let me tell u about myself. My Dad Ramakant Sinari was a acclaimed freedom fighter. My hubby is Indian Army Pioneer Major Deepak Rao, one of the only 5 people to be knighted by President of India since independence along with MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Abhinav Bindra. My adopted daughter is a pro MMA cage fighter, one of the few women in the world to have defeated a man in Germany. But I am not just somebody's daughter, somebody's wife or somebody's mother. I am Dr. Seema Rao, a woman in her own right, achieving in a men's world. My world is the camouflaged arena of blood, sweat and grit. I am India's only woman commando trainer. I trained 20,000 commandos from every elite special for 20 years without compensation. I have faced all the usual problems faced by women and even more. I was ousted by my in-laws, shunned by my parents and boycotted by society for entering a men's domain. I have lived in poverty in chawl, rode a 2nd hand scooter and even had to sell my mangalsutra for my husband's retinal surgery. My vocation was physically demanding, involved travelling to hostile locations such as freezing mountains, scorching desert, dense jungles and steep altitudes. I did not give up despite head injury, memory loss and vertebral fracture. I was shot in the Kashmir valley by terrorists. I helped the Indian forces in modernization of close quarter battle training winning 3 Army chief citations and more than 1000 trophies and felicitations from Indian forces. Is breastfeeding an act of sultry that we, men, have our eyes fixated? Is feeble breastfeeding while being in public, a Taboo? 

Or are we just recklessly desperate to peek in?

-Women face such encounters very frequently, situations when they are struck with embarrassment. Urban Designers must emphasize Inclusive designs keeping in requirements of a woman, more importantly, a mother! Cabins or enclosures with basic amenities of child care must be provided for mothers to feel safe and comfortable.

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME - GENDER SENSITIVITY on 19.10.2019

MAPS Vasundhara in co-ordination with Centre of Excellence, Dehradun (C.B.S.E.) conducted a one day Capacity Building Programme  on Gender Sensitivity in its premises. Dr. Kalpana Maheshwari, Founder Principal welcomed and felicitated Mrs. Sanjana Walia , Resource Person, with a sapling. The focus of this workshop was on removing discrimination among girls & boys right from a young age itself.
