The illustrator Gerald Rose, who has died aged 87, was the youngest winner of the Kate Greenaway medal for children’s book illustration, in 1960. Then still in his mid-20s and barely out of art school, he would go on, often in partnership with his wife, Elizabeth, a writer, to become an influential artist in the field of children’s picture books. His painterly, playful and gently anarchic artwork continues to be enjoyed around the world.
The Greenaway medal (now renamed the Carnegie medal) was awarded for Rose’s illustrations to Old Winkle and the Seagulls. Written by Elizabeth and published by Faber, the book exemplifies Rose’s graphic ebullience and flair. It also embodies one of his recurrent themes and motifs, the coastal town (in this case Lowestoft, Suffolk), reflecting his lifelong association with the sea.
Born in Hong Kong, Gerald was the son of Rachel (nee Law) and Henley Rose. His father was from Lowestoft, and served in the army in both the first and second world wars, having signed up at the age of 16. He had enjoyed his time stationed in Hong Kong and decided to make it his home, entering the civil service there after he was demobbed.
His mother, originally from a large family in Borneo (Gerald would joke that he was descended from Iban headhunters), was adopted by a missionary, who paid for her schooling at a convent and sent her to Hong Kong to finish her education. There she met and married Henley, the pair sharing a keen interest in sport.
In late 1930s Hong Kong their two children, Gerald and his older sister, Dawn, enjoyed an idyllic early childhood, roaming freely around what were then wild spaces near the family home. Gerald recalled a dramatic encounter with a wild tiger, and the exotic flora and fauna of his childhood would form a regular theme in his work, most directly in a highly emotive autobiographical work for Cambridge University Press, Tiger Dreams (1996).
The childhood idyll was brutally curtailed when the Japanese swept into Hong Kong, and by 1942 the family was broken up. Gerald, Dawn and Rachel were taken to the Stanley internment camp for civilians while Henley was interned at a military camp. They were there for four years, living on bowls of congee that were often full of maggots. Rachel died there of tuberculosis.
On their release, the children were sent to live in Lowestoft with Henley’s mother. Henley remained in Hong Kong, returning to Suffolk as Gerald was leaving school. Gerald had failed his 11-plus and had gained no qualifications at secondary modern school. As Henley took a keen interest in art, he took Gerald to see an exhibition of cartoons in London, where a woman, overhearing the boy’s enthusiastic interest, recommended he consider art school. Gerald liked the idea and began a Saturday morning drawing class, before enrolling full-time at Lowestoft College of Art, where he met Elizabeth Pretty, a fellow student.
His talents were recognised in the form of a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy Schools in 1955. Elizabeth joined him in London to work as a primary school teacher, and the two married later that year. Gerald was spending his days painting from the model at the RA, where his visiting tutors included Stanley Spencer, Carel Weight and John Minton, but he also took a keen interest in the children’s books Elizabeth would bring home.
It was during this time that the two began their collaboration, and their first book, How St Francis Tamed the Wolf, was published by Faber in 1958. One of Gerald’s RA tutors noticed a copy in the window of Hatchards book shop across the road and made a gently disapproving comment about commercial art at Gerald’s next studio session. Now with a young child, the couple found money was tight, but with Wuffles Goes to Town, published as Gerald was graduating in 1959, and the Greenaway success immediately following, he successfully applied for a teaching post at Blackpool College of Art.
In 1965, and now with three children, the family moved to Kent, where Gerald was appointed to teach at Maidstone College of Art under the then principal, the prolific illustrator William Stobbs. There he developed the highly successful BA illustration programme, which he led until 1987. Throughout his teaching career, and beyond, Gerald remained extremely productive as an illustrator and continued to paint, though seldom for commercial sale.
As well as the books with Elizabeth, Gerald illustrated the work of many other authors, including Ted Hughes’s Nessie the Mannerless Monster (1964), James Joyce’s The Cat and the Devil (1965), Paul Jennings’ The Hopping Basket (1965) and The Great Jelly of London (1967), Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky and Other Poems (1968) and a number of Norman Hunter’s Professor Branestawm titles (1981-83). His own later picture books included the award-winning Ahhh! Said Stork (1986) and The Tiger Skin Rug (2011).
Gerald and Elizabeth spent their later years living on the East Sussex coast at Hove.
Elizabeth died in 2020. Gerald is survived by their three children, Martin, Richard and Louise, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his sister Dawn.

Hey so remember how part of why Shadow was made was to find a cure for Maria's terminal illness?
AU where Maria survives getting shot and crawls her way to one of Gerald's labs, injecting herself with a prototype cure. Except even though it works, she's a hedgehog now, and her memory gets scrambled. But she vaguely remembers she has to reuinite with Shadow, so she crawls in another escape pod and launches herself at Earth. Only to wake up nearly 50 years later, ending up getting emotionally attached to Sonic, and oh did I mention she tried to remember her name but misremembered "ma ri a" as "a me ri a" (Amelia)? As in, Amy?
So anyway, Amy and Maria are both 12, and Amy parrots Maria's exact words back to Shadow during the ending of Adventure 2, so uhhhh, yeah, that gave me brain thoughts.

Some people seem convinced that G.U.N. knew it was Shadow who stole the Chaos Emerald in SA2 and were deliberately framing Sonic as a cover-up rather than just confusing the two by accident. And while I get that this is definitely something G.U.N. would do and it’s an interesting idea, I’m not sure it holds up under scrutiny.
Because the thing is, if no one is actually confusing the two and it’s all a cover-up, how do you explain Amy mistaking Shadow for Sonic? Because she’s definitely not framing Sonic for anything, and she was right behind Shadow in broad daylight, whereas the soldiers would have been farther away and at night. She doesn’t even seem to realize her mistake until he actually turns around and looks her in the eye.
Eggman also makes the same mistake when he first wakes Shadow up. His first words to Shadow are “Is that you, Sonic? Are you trying to spoil my plans again?” And while Eggman is the type to frame Sonic, at that point in the story there isn’t anything to frame him for. Shadow hasn’t committed any crimes yet, he literally just woke up. So Eggman has no reason to pretend to think that Shadow is Sonic, which means his confusion is real.
And if the genius doctor, who knew about Project: Shadow and was directly descended from its creator, could make that mistake, why couldn’t the soldiers? Just because they know Project: Shadow exists doesn’t mean they know he’s a hedgehog. It would have been beneficial to G.U.N. to make everyone think Project: Shadow was the Biolizard since that would be a lot scarier and therefore what happened on the Ark would seem more justified. In fact, that’s probably what happened, given that the Biolizard is the only thing Rouge finds when she starts looking for information. She’s a government spy who’s working for G.U.N., and even she seems surprised to find out that Project: Shadow is a hedgehog and not a giant lizard. And again, she has no reason to fake that surprise.
In Sonic X, Chris and Chuck, who are undoubtedly on Sonic’s side, confuse them too. And in Sonic Prime, Nine says, “You could be twins.” So I think people do just genuinely mix them up.
Also, for what it’s worth, I’ve seen several people in real life point to my Shadow plush and ask, “Is that Sonic?” So it’s not an impossible mistake to make for someone who’s not familiar with these guys.

AU where Amy and Professor Gerald swap places with Sonic and Eggman respectively, but during Forces, instead of six months of being tortured, Gerald (who sees himself as a good guy and who wants to conquer the world so he can "protect" people from harm) instead keeps Amy in a very comfortable cell that has everyone one could ask for. He does this so he can convince her to join him, or at least not interfere with his plans.
He makes sure she has her fortune cards, TV (which plays heavily vetted media that doesn't have a message against him, or his own propaganda), video games. He serves good and healthy food, even offering her favorite desserts if she's on good behavior.
Amy, naturally, hates it. She's ashamed that she was captured, scared for her friends' safety, furious that Gerald thinks he can buy her support by treating her nice. Some days, she tries to break free, but Gerald has planned for every contingency. Other days, she plays along, pretends to be a good "guest". Gerald talks to her often, trying to sway her. They have passionate debates about each's point of view. Amy tries to appeal to his emotions, get him to see her side and free her. Gerald tries to use logic to convince her that the world needs a dictator to protect people's happiness. Neither can agree. They both decide to keep trying. For now.
It reaches a head when Amy is told she has a call from her friend. She gets a video call from Cream, who talks about how everyone has surrendered, how Gerald is in control of the whole world. But for some reason, she says she's happy, and she wants Amy to give up so she can join her friends and live in Gerald's new world. It takes Amy a minute, but she realizes the truth: he used advanced A.I. to generate a fake call with Cream to trick her!
That pushes Amy to the point of rage. She swears she's going to find a way to escape. To make sure Gerald's plans fail. She refuses to let him win or to fall for his tricks. She will find a way to beat him, no matter what.
She will be free, and she will see her friends again. He can count on it.

Sonic Headcanons 9
Professor Gerald and Black Doom never gave Shadow "the talk", so Shadow doesn't know how babies are made. They likely both thought that he would never have a romantic relationship and he is most likely sterile.
Knuckles also doesn't know how babies are made, but at some point, when Rouge was on Angel Island on somewhat peaceful terms, he asked her out of curiosity. His muzzle went the same colour as his red fur from blushing when she answered his question, quite bluntly and in detail actually. Rouge found Knuckles’ reaction hilarious and adorable.
Because Shadow grew up alongside Maria, she used to invite him to sleep in her bed. When Shadow came to live on Earth and regained a few of his memories (he might not even have his memories when this occurred. Possibly an instinctual habit), he didn't realise that people don't just get into bed with each other, as that's what he did with Maria. It made sleepovers with friends very confusing for Shadow and awkward for everyone else.
(Spoilers for the murder of sonic the hedgehog) After the events of Amy's birthday on the Mirage Express, Amy and Shadow went to the Hot Honey concert together and Shadow actually kinda enjoyed it. Amy began introducing him to different bands and artists she likes and they both bond over them.
While most Mobian species are diurnal (Meaning they are awake during the day), all Mobians have Tapetum Lucidum in their eyes, which means they have reflective eyes that makes it easier for them to see in the dark. It’s probably not as noticeable as regular animals’ reflective eyes.
Shadow is probably a clean freak due to growing up around Maria and everything needing to be sanitary because of her disease and how weakened her immune system was. His home is stocked with multiple cleaning chemicals, detergents and equipment. It’s all lavender scented.
Both Knuckles and Shadow are touch starved. Surprisingly, Knuckles is a little more repressed than Shadow when it comes to hugs. This might be due to Knuckles growing up in isolation and Shadow having a close affectionate sibling bond with Maria. Shadow isn’t as uptight about hugs as you would necessarily think.
That’s the reason why Shadow is so relaxed about Amy hugging him in Sonic Adventure 2. It likely reminded him of Maria.
Amy is a practicing witch, specifically a kitchen witch. She uses Tarot cards, which is a type of Divination and can sense Sonic without actually seeing him with some kind of ESP. She loves baking (Which is why I thought a kitchen witch, made most sense) and probably makes delicious edible potions and spells, especially love potions.
(Adopted headcanon from BRaN, @be_random_now Hands & Feel comic on Twitter) Gloves are like underwear in most Mobian cultures worldwide and not wearing gloves in public is similar to the human is equivalent of being naked in public, though not quite the same. Showing your bare hands is a special and intimate privilege only for close friends, family and significant other halves.
(Sonic Adventure 2 spoilers) The reason Shadow fell to his 'death' in Sonic Adventure 2 is partly due to his inexperience using the Chaos Emeralds to go super, as well as running out of energy without his inhibitor rings to moderate how much energy he outputs.
(Sonic Adventure 2 spoilers) Sonic and Shadow fixed the moon in Sonic Adventure 2 when they chaos controlled the Ark back. It reset the moon back to before it was half destroyed by the Eclipse cannon. Basically, it's as if it was never destroyed in the first place.
Sonic has stacks and stacks of photo albums piled up at Tails' house. They document most of his adventures and time he spent hanging out with his friends. Sonic puts a little description and the date he took the photo next to the images, so he can reminisce when he visits Tails' home. Tails regularly prints out photos that Sonic took on his phone camera.
