Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP)

Breeds with HYPP; Quarter Horses, American Paint Horses, Appaloosas, and Quarter Horse Crosses.

HYPP

"An inherited disease of the muscle, caused by a genetic defect. A mutation in the sodium channel gene. Sodium channels are pores in the muscle cell membrane which control contraction of the muscle fibers. When the defective sodium channel gene is present, the channel becomes “leaky” and makes the muscle overly excitable and contract involuntarily. The channel become “leaky” when potassium levels fluctuate in the blood. This may occur with fasting followed by consumption of a high potassium feed such as alfalfa. Hyperkalemia, which is an excessive amount of potassium in the blood, causes the muscles in the horse to contract more readily than normal. This makes the horse susceptible to sporadic episodes of muscle tremors or paralysis."

GENOTYPE

HYPP Positive= H/N and H/H

HYPP Negative= HYPP N/N

HYPP horses with H/N genotype means they are heterozygous carriers, carrying one copy of the HYPP gene. If you bred a mare who is H/N to a stallion who is N/N, you would have about a 50% chance the foal is H/N as well. However if you bred an H/N mare to an H/N stallion you will have about a 25% chance the foal being N/N, a 50% chance it will be H/N, and a 25% chance it will be H/H.

HYPP horses with the H/H genotype means it is homozygous, carrying both copies of the HYPP gene. 100% passing the HYPP gene to it's offspring.

IMPRESSIVE (but not really)

Let's talk about the QH stallion, Impressive. All horses that have a HYPP positive gene of any kind, all descend from this horse. Impressive sired 2,250 foals and they estimate he has around 50,000 living descendants. No dilution of lineage will remove HYPP, as it is a dominant trait and will show whether you are 5 generations back or 2.

HYPP SYMPTOMS

HYPP varies in severity, it's not always equal and every horse may have different reactions. HYPP can be confused for tying-up or even colic, they may have difficulty breathing, muscle tremors, sweating, weakness, tremors. In more severe cases the horse may collapse from paralysis of the muscles in the airway and can result in sudden death.

Not every horse who is HYPP positive may display symptoms, making this disease sometimes hard to detect.

IS IT CURABLE?

No. HYPP may be managed with diet and certain medicines for maintenance but it cannot be cured. H/H positive horses have poor prognosis and can be much more difficult to manage.

Once again, my babygirl is facing reprehensible slander. Yeah they look pretty wild. That's sick. Amazing. Whimsical. There are around 15 000 marine fish species and Molids look unique enough for it to be remarked on every single time? Sunfish stay winning. Anyway. Sunbathing, or basking, as far as we know, isn't connected to digestion. There are two purposes to sunfish basking behaviour that we know of.

The secondary purpose is yes, removal of parasites. Even that isn't them asking for help or whatever. Fish and birds don't help out of some sense of altruism. Fish and birds help because they get something out of it. So sunfish aren't burdening anything when they present their parasites, they're offering up a snack and getting something out of it. It's mutually beneficial. Nobody is leeching of anybody else (except for the parasites)

The main purpose is thermoregulation. Why do sunfish need help with thermoregulation? Because they're both cold blooded, and sick-ass, highly specialised, ain't-nobody-doing-it-like-her deep divers. Sunfish hunt for jellies, siphonophores and salps in deep cold waters, diving up to 800m down and repeating this throughout the day. Unlike whales, sunfish aren't warm blooded, so they have to find other ways to maintain a functional internal temperature when they go down. They do this by basking to raise their internal temperature before a dive and recover afterwards. This means the longer they hang out on the surface, the longer and deeper they're able to dive and hunt. Your girl's a predator, and she's got to prepare. They're also much, much faster than 2 miles per hour, which comes to 0.9 meters per second. Sunfish are able to swim in bursts with enough power to breach their ungainly bodies out of the water, which has been estimated to require a speed of 6 meters per second. Not the fastest by far but no slouch. She also calls sunfish clumsy swimmers. And sure, when they're basking (which is when people usually see them), they're not the most graceful. But imagine someone called you clumsy based on your movements when you're lying in bed resting. Next she complains that sunfish can't close their mouths. True. And why should they? They feed via suction and have rows of pharyngeal teeth (in their throat) that act as hooks to prevent anything from escaping. Why waste energy closing a mouth that doesn't need to close? Someone explain. Saying that sunfish serve no purpose is both wrong and completely irrelevant. Assigning "purpose" to animals is inaccurate and design-based thinking that doesn't fit within an evolutionary framework. All life only has one biological purpose. Survive and reproduce within their given environment. Sunfish are killing it on that one. But still, they do serve functions within the ecosystem, if we want to think of it like that. They help control jellyfish populations. They provide a source of food, especially when they're younger. They play host to entire ecosystems of parasites. Being a host to parasites is nothing to be ashamed of. Sunfish host life. Acting like that's some sort of failing on their part is unscientific. So we've established that sunfish are a) not useless and b) not helpless. They're also not hurting anybody, unless you count the boats that wack into them. And whose fault is that? Sunfish have been basking for millions of years. We're the ones who started boating around at high speeds, not looking where we're going. They're just doing their thing and people are maulding. Pathetic. So why all the hate? She doesn't deserve it.

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.

But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.

I have an odd question and you seem like the person who would know the answer:

What is it called when horses have their front legs set fairly far back in relation to their shoulder, like is often seen in poorly bred draft crosses?

Does it cause any actual issues or is it just unsightly?

This is an old question I am just now getting around to answering.

Camped Under is the term you are looking for. A horse that stands camped under can have hood pain/issues like navicular, but conformational camped under puts a lot of stress on the tendons and ligaments and is not ideal conformation, can lead to pulled tendons and lameness A lot of times the horse is just standing stupid and isn't actually camped under naturally but here are some visual representations
