okay okay, i'm finally watching appmon

i'm only like 5 eps in and watching it while doing art

the buddy apps so far that we've met (gatchmon and dokamon) are so fucking funny. they're both weirdos for entirely different reasons.

also appmon really feels like the bridge between xros wars and ghost game so far--- applink emphasizing the power of connections like digixros, and a lot of worldbuilding elements that feel like they were stripped for parts into ghost game (the AR field and a lot of how the mons interact with IRL stuff).

i guess also the grb factor feels reminiscent of the l virus but i'll put a pin in that until the resolution of the plot ghfghfmghfghhj

i guess that shouldn't be a surprise considering that, like, GG was completely fine having espimon (an appmon) be a main supporting cast member, but

yes i know adventure 2020 technically came between appmon and ghost game, but. adventure media including the reboot exists as an extant form of digimon that just is to my brain lmao.

So, GG finale is... unusual for those people used to modern digimon series and their finales.

I'll explain what i got from it under the cut ↓

First of all, Gammamon and Gulus are treated as the same creature. Yes, creature. Gulus explains he's an alien from another planet who got destroyed by the "Endbringer" and possibly made him be stuck in this mentality of that "eat or be eaten" motto. Gulus also warns them all about this coming into their planet, but the funny part is... It's in 2,000 human years ahead. Which the fun part is the kids are sighing relieved while the digimon are all OMG PANIC MODE WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING NOW!!

So yeah, they brought this foreshadowing for a possible sequel or whatever they could do with this -- or it's up to the audience imagine this adventure-and-fight lol

Also i loved how Gammamon's biggest power is his charisma. After he and Hiro beat Gulus, and Siriusmon eat Gulus, the two have an inner consciousness scene where Gulus admit defeat to the cute Gamma and then Gammamon convinces him to create a medicine to heal the Digital World and the digimon. Also possibly more rules (as mentioned by Gulus)

Also the whole "Gammamon's world" and "Inner words" thingies were actually some figurative and artistic form to interpret Gammamon and Gulus's consciousnesses. I found it very interesting ok... That would explain why they got separated from each other... And why they returned to the same place once Siriusmon ate Gulus.

Like i said, this episode is unusual because we got a cool battle at first part and the latter part is definitely full of INFODUMP. And I admit it was very funny because it was like watching Adventure/02 all again when there existed one whole episode with infodump for the rest of the ep after the first part of the ep having some cool (and short) battle.

Anyway, Quantumon sent the digimon to the human world in order to prevent them from getting infected and they isolated the DW to prevent the virus from spreading. They also was very very more mechanical as they claim to know what emotions are but cannot feel them. They used the digimon to collect data and made BlackTailmon to send the digimon back to the DW apparently. With this Hiro and co. accuses Quantumon of treating the digimon and everything like a game.

Also, there's a very brief nod to Adventure finale, in which Quantumon says they have to bring the digimon back to study them, including the mons of the trio. Also there's this thing they meant to have made a ton of calculations and all of them led to the collapse of both worlds because of the Endbringer thing...

... And then the kids end up saying they can handle this, and the digimon also wanted to stay with the kids so... we got a very cute reference to 02's finale (which was the original finale for Adventure, plotted since day one and just postponed to 02 because they had 02 greenlighted and then they elaborated more things in it) -- with the digimon and humans living together.

And ah, Quantumon tells Hiro and co. to create a country for both digimon and humans. Once they're back, Hiro starts begging Kotaro to help them. Espimon says, in the very old-man he was supposed to be portrayed as, "don't drag us in!"

I think this was a very good finale. Not the usual epic battle with cool ass animation and lines etc, but it was very nostalgic to me as i loved the infodump episodes in Adv/02/Frontier.

Anyway, i'll miss this series so much. Cool horror-esque series, i hope the "Endbringer" thing means they have something in mind for the future... Or not. Send me your fanfics about it if you make one!!

You know what makes me mad? Proximamon. He's a super special Digimon who doesn't exist, and his existence is only a theoretical possibility born from super calculations.

The three Digimon you need to make him are Arcturusmon, Siriusmon, and their buddy from the library, Ryudamon. The super calculator who would have come up with the possibility was Quantomon, and we never even got a single mention! Not even some ominous foreshadowing where Gulus gloated about obtaining ultimate power, or someone foretold of endings and beginnings (Proximamon's entire shtick is that it repeatedly destroys and then recreates the world, which are its actual two attacks that it is constantly using. I think it does this until it creates an idealized world that it wants and unfuses back to its component Digimon)

Not even a mention. I am so disappointed.

I have to agree! Proximamon is one of the things that have me holding out that the world of Ghost Game isn't over and that we are going to get a movie or a short second season that finishes up because there is too much leftover loose ends left untied up. Like, lesser ones are things like

-"What has Hokuto been doing in the digital world this whole time???"

-"How did he click up with assistant Terriermon?" (Until confirmed otherwise I'm going to pretend Terrier Assistant hatched from Bokomon's egg when he died and BlackTailmon Uver. took it.)

-"Espimon wanting to evolve is all well and good but was there any more important reason to go on a possible one-way trip to find Hiro just to Evolve?" Like... was it to be "Strong" to survive the chaos and infection Gulus left in the digital world? But then he goes to a mostly "Safe" Dimmension where that might not matter so....?

-"Can Fukatsu and Mei be reunited please?"

But then there's the IMPORTANT info like

-"Wait.... did you say ENDBRINGER????!!!!!" Like I know the GG writing team wanted to make something a little different (Example: No dead Leomon this series) but to go through all of that and almost end it on a joke that for the most part the thing motivating the "Big Bad" to do the big bad stuff is an almost NOT THREAT for the humans currently alive. Like it'll be a threat to FUTURE humans but like... 84 generations away from now.... That feels kinda like when a creator sets up a twist villain and the audience guesses correctly so they switch it to someone else entirely that had no set up or foreshadowing.... IE.... Bad writing....

-"Why no fight Gulus all the way to MEGA????" You HAVE a mega for him we never get to see in anime. You have a Mega AND a MEGA+ that we have ALL THE INGREDIENTS FOR and we never get him. Ryudamon could have been ANY kind of digimon but they chose one of the parts to make Proximamon.

-"Why not just kill off Gulus? Or not just let him be the big bad." I mean I don't WANT him killed off but killing him off and not bringing up some endbringer and just having Gulus be this Regulus Star Black Hole that wants to eat/destroy everything would at least tie off that loose end. Sure it is WAY more satisfying and on brand for Hiro and Gamma to love him into submission given that this series is basically "Lilo and Stitch the Series" but digimon! But the loose ends man....

The whole ending had this theme of "Creating a new world for both Digimon and Humans alike" and Proximamon is the man with the plan to be able to do it! And once again we have ALL THE PARTS and Quantumon! And why would you not want to try and sell cool villain merch?

Ghost game felt a lot like the first series of Magic Knight Rayearth; a whole series setting up to a second series that wraps things up and is the story they actually WANT to tell. But who knows...

Rewatching GG has made me appreciate it so much more (the Episode Guide is almost done*, I just need to edit it because it's a bit messy), and knowing there won't be another Digimon anime for a good while again (aside from the Zero Two movie but I'm not watching it)... It's bitter sweet. We finally get plot, but at the cost of the series ending. It's been a fun, unique ride though, and I'm grateful for it

*I mean it won't be 100% completed until the final episode airs but I'll post it early so if anybody wants to rewatch some highlights, it'll be easier for them to find the right episodes

Digimon Ghost Game EP. 55

Yet another villain with potential that got cut short by the monster-of-the-week format.

People were behaving abnormally at night, parkouring all around then later wore up in horror having no clues how they got there. Kiyo and Gammamon were also victims because they treated cats badly (in defense of Gammamon's case, it was an accident). Hiro was also entangled in this after getting caught tailing (got it?) the prior two.

The villain this week was Bastemon, a sexy anthropomorphic feline belly dancer Digimon (that's a mouthful) who gave her power to control others to her servant cats for the upcoming grand selection process to seek who's worthy of serving her.

The trials were simple: just imitate what the cats can normally do. However, some of them were impossible, like the one our heroes got: passing through a narrow space between bars.

The horror of Bastemon's tyranny was on point. She didn't care for humans, seeing them as inferior to her divine presence. The victims were forced to keep attempting the trials no matter how painful it was. Imagine waking up to watch a torture on a Sunday morning. That's how revolting I felt when watching this.

(Gammamon passed this since he's smol. You know, he likes to make cute noises, easily gets excited and curls up when sleeping. I'm certain this episode's secondary point was to prove how Gammamon was actually a cat in disguise.)

Those who passed were kept as pets while those who failed were forced to dig their own grave. Luckily, Ruli and her crew got some celeries and intoxicated all the cats, thus releasing the victims from the puppeteering. Lamortmon tried to solo Bastemon but she's too OP in 1v1. Her Vampire Dance drained the opponent's life force and Helter Skelter took control of their bodybut leaving their mind intact as a form of mental torture. She controlled Lamortmon to attack the gang but Canoweissmon subdued him. And we got, ahem, an interesting camerawork of that scene.

Nevertheless, Espimon, Airdramon and Thethismon had to combine their forces to outwit her. Thethismon absorbed the silver vine and celeries into herself and purposefully let Bastemon used Vampire Dance on her to drain them, which in turn defeating her. The fighting animation was beautiful and fluid, especially Bastemon's movement, really capturing her charm as a belly dancer.

The end was where I disliked. Bastemon just gave up and accepted that maybe she was wrong after all. Like, this was not the first time GG villains had a 180, but this one was so blatant and came out of nowhere that I could not come to accept it. She had a nice set of assets (physically and mentally) but it's very underused to fit with the monster-of-the-week format.
