During the main quests, this appears p often. It literally means "Jin's Journey":
Tumblr media
But the kanji for "Jin" -- 仁 -- also means "benevolence," emphasizing a respect for humanity. So 仁之道, while it means "Jin's Journey," can also be read as "the path/way of benevolence."
He isn't following the bushido, or 武士道,the way of the warrior/samurai, but rather 仁之道, the way of benevolence, a path that diverts sharply from the "honor" that samurai follow.

Because the spare or kill poll is going around (thank you for your service @pollsoftsushima !!), I wanted to elaborate on why I chose spare. I've seen a lot of people say that sparing Shimura shows that Jin has embraced the Ghost and his own version of honour, and while I agree, my reason for sparing him was much more personal, and maybe much more petty.
I spared Shimura because Shimura is once again expecting Jin to solve Shimura's problems without any regard of what that will do to Jin himself.
Jin is the one who saved him from Castle Kaneda, Jin is the one who got Yarikawa on their side. Jin does all the work and suffers the losses, while Shimura reaps the rewards and complains about Jin's methods.
In that final fight, it is Shimura who can't face the dishonour of Jin standing up to him. And so naturally, he expects Jin to solve that problem by giving him a warrior's death, without once thinking about what that would do to Jin.
And Shimura has the gall to make the fight all about himself. He is the one being punished. He is the one who is sad. Don't we feel sorry for him? But it is HIS stubbornness that led to the fight in the first place. Like, dude, this is YOUR fault. Shimura is trying to KILL Jin to save his own honour/family's legacy, and then he acts like he is the injured one.
Nope. I would not add to Jin's already extensive trauma for this man's bruised ego

I old oc since high school (a bit cringe I know) I've had but never drew it but got bored one night and decided to actually draw her
I always imagine her as the daughter of Dazai when he was still in Port Mafia but it was a one night stand when he was 16 (don't worry the mother was also 16) (idk why high school me thought of this I was really down bad for dazai for some reason) but when the mother found out dazai already ghosted her... so dazai never found out and she moved away from yokohama and raised her on her own
her ability is based on irl Tsushima Yuko novel "Child of Fortune" (ironically the novel is about a single mother which at the time i didnt know when i made her bg) her ability is basically Mary Sue meta luck cause i found it funny at the time that a child defied logic just by luck maybe ill work on it like give it some cons like it runs out or something

Okay but like what if Jin’s mom was a kitsune?
There’s tons of stories if foxes transforming into women to marry human men. Usually when their true forms are discovered they revert back to their fox form, leaving their children and husband behind.
Usually the abandonment is instantaneous, but what if in Chiyoko’s case it wasn’t? What if she was so attached to her son that she couldn’t make a clean break and pretended she was sick so she could have more time with her son? And then when she reverted back to her fox form, she always kept an eye on him. Maybe that’s why the foxes on Tsushima are so drawn to him. Maybe it’s one specific fox that misses her cub.
Now Chiyoko being Shimura’s sister complicates things. I don’t see him being a kitsune at all. But it also wasn’t uncommon for families to adopt children (after all, Shimura wanted to do it to Jin and Ishikawa wanted to do it to Tomoe). Maybe someone in the Shimura family did something nice for a poor pitiful fox cub back in the day and the next day a beautiful abandoned little girl showed up and they raised her as their own. And when she came of age, she married Kazumasa and had Jin.
Anyway, it’s something that just occurred to me. There’s probably plotholes everywhere and some kinks I have to work out. But like. What if I headcanoned this? What if I did that?????

From what I’ve read in the reviews and the tags I follow, I know Iki Island Expansion is simply an ‘expansion,’ not the full-on story like I feel like it should have been. The original Ghost of Tsushima’s story is already visceral and remarkable, full of relatable characters and even more relatable protagonist (JIN SAKAI, everyone), and I like the fact that it brings even more depth and complexity to his character, which is remarkable facet of Sucker Punch when it comes to their storytelling, the integrity of meshed storyline that makes him such a dualistic and enigmatic character who struggles with human emotions, flaws, vulnerabilities, etc.
Jin's arrival on Iki provides a big contrast to the rest of the game, as the island is a location where the locals aren't trusting of or deferential to their samurai lords - in fact, the islanders hate all samurai, and the Sakai clan in particular. It was Kazumasa Sakai who led a campaign to pacify the raiders of the island, and in a slight re-contextualization of Jin's past, for his father was killed during that invasion. So there's a ton of emotional baggage for Jin to work through and interesting character interactions for him to have as he helps the islanders, while concealing his true, hated identity.
I feel like this direction of Jin’s further suffering and tribulations work because so much focus is placed on Jin's feelings and flaws as he works through them, forced to reconcile with a past he's been avoiding - even throughout much of the original story. He has to confront them firsthand - as Jin's internal conflict is exacerbated by his interactions with the Eagle herself.
Early in the Iki story, Jin is captured and poisoned by the Mongols, and the players spend the rest of the expansion's main campaign grappling with visions from Jin's past. These can be triggered by anything, from sneaking up on enemies, to running out of stamina while sprinting, to seeing the corpse of an animal killed on a hunt. The visions create a fascinating intermixing between the goals of the Mongols and Jin's personal insecurities and past. Together, these give the game a good excuse to constantly throw in flashbacks and context that broaden his personal story.
And already knowing even as the Ghost, Jin Sakai struggles with these visions of honor and bloodshed, and I’d like to believe it’s further juxtaposed in raw, visceral manner in this expansion. In fact, Jin Sakai is a good person who is willing to change, accept past mistakes, and work towards becoming not only a better person, but a better warrior who will sacrifice himself and serve. Even as I haven’t watched the play through, I feel like Jin’s dualistic nature will further shined a light, and revealed in the ways in which he himself doesn’t expect.

i just realized, when Jin was speculating to Sensei Ishikawa about Lord Shimura’s guess as to why Ishikawa was disgraced with Clan Nagao, he relays that Lord Shimura guessed that it was a peasant woman that brought Ishikawa down, that Ishikawa wanted to marry below his station as a samurai lord and Lord Nagao had Ishikawa “retire” for his shame
and then later in the game Lord Shimura again blames a peasant woman for Jin’s downfall (Yuna) and tries to make it her fault for Jin becoming the Ghost.

I feel like you can draw a slight parallel to the samurai/feudal system of Japan with Pro Heroes' role in BNHA, and how they relate to the growth of dependence on public defenders of the people as well as Japan's historical views on collectivism and adherence to authority figures as a whole. You could also compare the initial chaos and confusion of both citizens and the identity crises of some samurai after the Meiji Era began. In this essay I will

SPOILERS FOR GHOST OF TSUSHIMA! TURN AWAY NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR HONOR!

A really stark difference I noticed between the two endings was the way that the choice to kill Lord Shimura reflect on how Jin's morality has grown or stayed the same over the course of the game (being the ghost or adhereing to bushido samuri code).
Like yeah I think most people got this, but what really brought that idea home is how Lord Shimura reacts to Jin's choices.
When you choose to kill Lord Shimura, he explicitly thanks you as his "son" for taking care to remember his legacy as a great warrior, leader, and father (honestly Jin's shaky voice BREAKS ME). Shimura then instructs Jin to "find him in his next life", in which Jin proceeds to stab his father figure to honor his request for a warrior's death. Daisuke Tsuki then delivers his most heart-wrenching wail of the game. (Arguably one worse than at Taka's death).
But, its a decidedly warmer reception than the other option—to spare Lord Shimura. Jin claims he has no honor, but that he refuses to kill his family. Lord Shimura, almost in a last ditch effort to have Jin recognize his wrongs, says that the Ghost will be hunted until the end of his days. Despite Jin's attempt to recognize Lord Shimura as family (perhaps not his father?), Lord Shimura realizes Jin can only ever be the Ghost and the honor-bound son that he raised is no longer exists and refuses to address hom as so. And that Jin the samurai, as you all know, "died on the beach".
Its sort of where we find a clear disconnect to how to two now communicate. They now have different values, and a lot of people have done well in explaining how Shimura truly is a slave to honor in order to uphold divisions of power, while Jin sees his father in everyone else on the island—deserving of help he is more than willing to give after failing the first time around. But that second layer is how Lord Shimura can either perceive Jin as a son and a fellow samurai, or as a stranger—the Ghost.
I think the two costume color changes to the Ghost armor illustrates this well. For killing Lord Shimura, you receive a white coded armour named "righteous punishment" and for sparing him, you get a red colored version called "vow of vengence". I think the two names are in reference to the ultimate end to "The Tale of Lord Shimura" in Ghost of Tsushima. Lord Shimura'a story likely doesn't end here, even if he is killed—legacy appears to be something that sticks around for most.
But for Shimura, Jin was either going to be his rightous punishment—killing his only son and family, or, to be a figure he must avenge his warrior's death from—someone he no longers knows. This sidequest was very much about Lord Shimura's ultimate perception of Jin Sakai after the events of the game.
But eh that's it for me. Now for GoT withdrawl symptoms.

Ishikawa-sensei is absolutely a jackass but no lie... I actually like the story interactions with him the most so far. His cackle after Jin caves and gets "you know suddenly I get why Tomoe tried to murder you" off his chest sold me hook, line, sinker.

2020 might have been a shit year, but you know what, in terms of video games?
The sonic the Hedgehog movie was a big hit.
Minecraft Steve and Cuphead are in Smash Bros, and Steve alone opens the door for other indie game characters to get in.
No straight Roads could be making rhythm games popular again.
Five Nights at Freddy’s was showcased along side Resident evil, God of War and Final Fantasy for the PS5, and with the movie still in the works, the series is now in the mainstream.
Ghost of Tsushima is an amazing release with fun gameplay and story.
Fall guys and Among Us shows that games don’t need state of the art graphics to be entertaining.
Crash Bandicoot 4 is officially a reality with meta humor (judging by the trailers), and it opens up the chance for a Spyro 4 and sequels for other games that have gotten HD remasters.
Nintendo is letting newer generations of gamers play Mario 64, sunshine and Galaxy on the newest hardware
And the next gen consoles are getting released in a couple months

MmucasFlem’s Twilight Zone
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect with Thimbleweed Park. After playing through a few point-and-click adventure games such as The Curse of Monkey Island and King’s Quest (the new one from Sierra Entertainment), I thought it would be good to keep going deeper down the rabbit hole. On Steam, I’ve purchased Grim Fandango and I’m eyeing Day of the Tentacle. But it was this game from Kickstarter that caught my eye, and which I tried my whet my appetite between the lean times of video game releases. What surprised me most about the game was how much reverence it had for the old classics from LucasArts. Nor had I expected so many references or the similarities between the game mechanics. Of course, if I had bothered to do more research on the game, perhaps I would have known.
In any case, I thought it was a good way to try and wrap my head around the illogical logic of such titles. Yet, as with all such games, I managed to get stuck. Even on casual mode. With the trusty internet on my side, however, I was able to push my way through the rest of the narrative and see it to completion. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s go back to the beginning:
Tumblr media
Thimbleweed Park starts with a murder. An unknown European follows instructions from a note left in his hotel room to venture out beneath a bridge. He is attacked and the next we see him, he is flying face down in a stream - evidently dead. Enter two Federal Agents: Ray and Reyes. Both of them have a reason for coming to the town, which is alluded to in their journals, but their immediate priority is to solve the murder.
It does not take long before they are introduced to several colourful characters that might have been behind the deed (who, in turn, become playable). Before I knew it, the murder was wrapped up in a tidy bow - at least in the eyes of Thimbleweed Park’s law enforcement - and the real story begins.
Joined by Delores, Ransome the Clown and Franklin, it became a quest to uncover the secrets of the late Chuck Edmund. As I explored the abandoned factory of PillowTron, I uncovered a conspiracy that shook my very understanding of the world: namely that these characters had become self-aware and knew that they were in an adventure game. I mean, why else would there be 3000 names in the local phone book when there was only a population of 80? Who was Delores’s mother? It was a fun twist and played right into the meta even until the very end of the game.
Tumblr media
The controls, at least on the Switch, left a lot to be desired. That might be due to the fact of how slow the cursor took to move from the command menu to the interactive objects in a particular scene. Changing between characters was also a bit of an ordeal, particularly if there was a particular character I needed to use. If I had played on the intended mode, it might have proved a challenge to manoeuvre my characters into the correct spots before I undertook the puzzle. And I still might have got it wrong and had to start all over again.
Despite my gripes with the game, I found it a fun diversion that lasted me a few days before the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And, at the very least, it was another game that I could clear from my backlog of games that I have accrued over the years. Even with the announcement that The Last of Us Part II will be delayed indefinitely due to COVID-19, I still have plenty of things to get through. Fingers crossed that Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk 2077 will be released as scheduled. And, if not, well, this quasi-lockdown might be the perfect time to catch-up.

Probably not going to be around much on my main because let’s just admit it, MK fandom is deader than Shao Kahn and Sindel in Aftermath and I have barely a handful of interactions on this blog. Most importantly, I’ve already written multitudes of headcanons and metas for Hanzo Hasashi and Kuai Liang, and Fujin as of now is only limited to a few, as he was my tertiary muse to begin with.
Right now, Ghost of Tsushima owns my undivided attention and I’ve been writing on my sideblog and having the time of my life. Jin Sakai is such an interesting protagonist we all needed and I’m just vibing over him, along with uncanny and extraordinary connections and parallels he has with my main boy, Hanzo Hasashi. I will be over there much frequently for the time being.
