HUGE TONAL SHIFT also lots of words:
okay so i was getting stuck in a rut with how i was doing this series of comics, so i wanted to pull some inspiration from outside sources. as soon as i decided this, pinetreevilliain's comic came across my dash and there was no going back. seriously, their comics are gorgeously done.
i snuck a color palette from color-palettes as well
it definitely made drawing this round of pages way more fun
UHHHHH
i guess that's it!
enjoy!

it's tragic how the memory of kasumi has been warped by sumire's insecurity. she's practically portrayed as an inhuman gymnastics machine, a little sad about her sister one time but achievements are all that really matter. i wonder if during vanilla p5 sumire's suppressed feelings of inadequacy ever caused her to think badly of her dead sister "sumire". to think its good that she lived and sumire died. because that's what sumire herself wanted.
she remembered she had a dead sister as kasumi! but her self-hatred made her portray kasumi as someone who didn't really care that sumire was dead. the sumire that kasumi jumped in front of a car to protect. she's completely twisted up who kasumi was as a person when she was alive it's fucked. she idolized kasumi to the point of making a complete mockery of who she was and what she believed in.
it says so much about both maruki and sumire that maruki never once considers reviving kasumi.

No one should care but ive been thinking about it and my take is that the root of the walrus/fairy question is one specific word used by the original poll: "surprised". The question is not which would change your worldview or which is more/less possible to really happen. The question is which *surprises* you more. To me, this means which causes a stronger immediate surprise reaction in you upon opening that door. In essence, how bad do you flinch?
This, to me, is why so many people (including myself!) choose Walrus. A walrus is an immediate situation! That's an animal larger and stronger than you are, one that I would say is potentially very dangerous, that many people have never seen in real life. And now it's your responsibility and on your doorstep! A walrus on a doorstep is a novel idea, at least to me. I don't think I've ever had an animal just appear at my door, and certainly never knock. Sure, after the gut reaction dies down, the mundanity of the situation is certain; a walrus is a real animal and the perpetrator is likely nearby, laughing at the world's weirdest ding-dong ditch prank. But for a few seconds, it's just you, your expectations upon opening a door, and a pinniped of unusual size.
Now let's examine the fairy; The term can be vague, but I think most people imagine a generally humanoid but very small creature with insect wings. First off, by being small, the fairy will likely not trigger a defensive response, unlike the walrus. This thing is not an immediate threat, at least to your subconcious. Also, by being humanoid, usually with a very human face and features, this changes the situation from "strange beast on my doorstep" to "strange person on my doorstep". Obviously this may be different from person to person, but I think "strange small person on my doorstep" would illicite much weaker response from my flight or fight reflex than a large, strange animal. This is nothing to say about the familiarity most people have with fantasy and fantasy ideas, and the lack of familiarity most people have with walrus' in general, but I think those are also factors.

I think about the weird ghost spectrum thingy of Lucky at the table whenever you get ready for a match
Lucky being a spirit stuck in the manor, from a time that's yet to past its inhabitants. Some think its the ghost of a past survivor, while others believe that it could be the true mastermind behind the games
One thing's for certain: whoever Lucky is, he's trapped. He serves as a reminder and a warning that they could very well be in his place next. It both motivates them to do their best during matches and discourages them from ever getting out of the manor
During a seemingly normal day, the "ghost" doesn't appear at the table, no matter how many matches take place. The next morning, the chosen survivors and hunter for the match discover Lucky in his worn clothes, passed out at the table.
(My main idea got exiled to the tags so uh. Please check that out HAHA)

anyway dc x dp is my new fixation hell and i've had so many ideas for aus but one that's really sticking with me is a classic "danny has to run away to gotham because his home is no longer safe" au where danny is explicitly looking for other ghosts or at the very least is pulled to gotham because there are so many of them there.
he flies around for a while and finds this manor and he can sense so many nice ghosts! so he just. goes there! and stays! and this can be human danny showing up at their door injured or it can be ghost danny just flying in but regardless, the waynes would never turn him away. bruce would get suspicious absolutely, but he's seen enough traumatized abused kids to know the signs. thomas and martha? they think this new ghost kid is adorable!!
there could be angst sure but idk i love the idea of danny getting hurt by his parents or the giw and being so wary of more humans, and this place full of friendly ghosts would be so enticing. ghosts that don't try to immediately wreck his shit? ghosts that get territorial but are also extremely welcoming and have a habit of letting new kids into their haunt? the batfam who've dealt with the paranormal before and wouldn't give a shit? that's a normal tuesday for them babes. like please, danny just found heaven and it's in gotham.
despite all the "batfam adopts danny" aus i've seen, i rarely see people mention the ghosts of dead family members who would absolutely still be there and would definitely want to help danny :(

Shinigami in the Silent Ward AU
At first, I wasn't planning to include Shinigami at all in this AU. But after some conceptualization in my head, I think I've got her role in the story down pat!
Shinigami isn't necessarily a character, but moreso an omnipotent force. While the megacorp's underground cult worships the god Amaterasu, Yuma prays to Shinigami in contrast. It's a practice he's performed ever since he heard the myth from fellow WDO members that the god of death watches over all detectives, giving them the strength and conviction to find the culprits they're searching for. The more a detective encounters death, the deeper their connection grows to Shinigami.
After the events of the Amaterasu Express Massacre, when a cult member disguised as one of the detectives set many of the drugged investigators aflame to protect his god from the plague of outsiders, the surviving Yuma exits the train with death clinging to him from all sides. That night, in the safety of the Furio home, Yuma prays to Shinigami once more, wishing for the strength he needs to see this mission through to the end. His cry for help does not go unheard. In his sleep, he's granted visions of an uncertain future, painted in unfamiliar colors. He doesn't know it yet, but in those moments, he's viewing the world through the eyes of a bedridden Makoto, weakened from losing half his spirit and using up all his power. And so, every night before he sleeps, Yuma prays, then gains visions of this mysterious man in his sleep in return, learning more and more about the cult as he does so. While the other detectives, including his own adoptive father Yakou, think Yuma is just having guilt-ridden dreams as a result of the massacre, one survivor knows better.
Vivia Twilight is all too familiar with the god of death Yuma prays to, for he worshipped her back when he was only a child. He wished for an escape from the cruel world he was trapped in under his abusive parents' roof. But the escape he was given wasn't the gentle cradle of death he had hoped for. Instead, he was cursed, plagued by unending visions of vengeful spirits and lost souls stuck in the mortal plane. They cried out for salvation, but Vivia could only listen. He endured the wails for his whole life, leading up to this point in time where Yuma claims he's been given a gift by Shinigami. Deep down, a burning rage sleeps within Vivia. But he keeps quiet, opting to observe Yuma and wait for the right moment to arrive. The moment when Vivia can tear down Yuma's beliefs and make him see what he sees, even if the only way to truly understand is for Yuma to die.
