Youngest daughter Joanna is still at home with them, and has other plans for this hot, summer's afternoon.

Although in the past she and Hester were an item for a while, Louie seems to have finally captured her heart like no other.

She wastes no time in making her long-term intentions clear.

But Louie is left cold by the proposition of a more fixed commitment. What is it with everyone wanting to tie them down, just when life is beginning to open up for them?!

Joanna has little option but to divert her energies into her own career, with positive results!

As autumn draws in, it's time to say goodbye to Merybury's most preposterous pooch. For now, she's laid to rest in the peaceful back garden.

The Brandons can't bear to be without a dog for long though, and new friend Abbey is soon welcomed to the family!

7 Different Character Roles

Consider adding these major, minor or side character roles to add some more complexity to your story!

All in relation to your Protagonist:

1) The Antagonist. The counter-part to your hero. The character or organization that causes struggle to your main characters. (Voldemort, Sauron, The Voltaire)

2) The Love Interest. The person or persons who your protagonist will fall in love with. They could start out as strangers, friends or enemies. (Edward Cullen, Mr. Darcy, Stefan Salvatore)

3) The Foil. A character who primarily exists to bring out the best in your protagonist and their qualities/skills. The clash of their opposite personalities will end up highlighting the positive attributes of your protagonist. If the protagonist and the foil eventually see past their differences they can become something more: like a friend, love interest or villain. (Draco Malfoy, Damon Salvatore, Lydia Bennet)

4) Deuteragonist(s). the sidekick(s) to your protagonist. These characters are close to your protagonist and can often overlap into the roles of confidant and love interest. 

5) The Mentor. The person who teaches the protagonist the things they need to make their way throughout the story. They have a great impact on the protagonist’s development and self-realization. (Rupert Giles, Gandalf, Yoda)

6) The Confidant. Often the best friend of the protagonist. This role can be hard to write because they can get overlooked by the love interest. Your protagonist trusts this person and typically tells them things they wouldn’t tell others. You could merge this role with some previous ones and the confidant could be the love interest or the mentor. (Jacob Black, Hermione, Bonnie Bennet).

7) Tertiary Characters. These characters appear only a few times throughout the story. However, these characters can still be important to your story. The barista your character sees once a week, the girl that the vampire ate and then trashed, the nervous kid who bumps into your character on their first day of school. (The Grady Twins in the Shinning, Radagast in The Lord of the Rings, Padma and Parvati Patil in Harry Potter)

The Bertram Family Album: Volume X

It's a long while since we've visited the Bertrams, so let's see what they're up to.

We're just in time to catch a touching moment between father and son. Edmund found the news of the unexpected demise (aged only 60, in my game years) of his contemporary, George Knightley, to be rather sobering, but William tries to reassure his dad that he's going to be around for a good while longer yet.

Although the Bertrams aren’t really party people, it's pretty much open-house for friends and family to drop round whenever they like.

Theophilus in particular has quite a collection of chums, including Anthony,

...Giles,

...and his cousin Francesca.

William, being a caring, but Shy lad, prefers hanging out with childhood pal Boo,

...dancing self-consciously, even when he's alone,

...or immersing himself in his favourite culinary pursuits. He clearly still needs a bit of practice with a chopping knife though.

Doofus Boo also still has a lot to learn. After all these years, he still hasn't figured out that the sofa is not an acceptable place to pee.

He's so good-natured though that no one has the heart to be too hard on him, especially not Fanny.

Concept for a future Dark Pictures Anthology installment (part 2):

Story: A group of ghost hunters visit the infamous Anderson Family Manor, a long-abandoned mansion which is said to be haunted by the spirits of the Anderson family. According to legend, the family was cursed by a witch, causing them to all go crazy and kill each other. What starts out as an uneventful night in a supposedly haunted mansion quickly turns south when they realize there IS something bizarre going on.

The gimmick: The story is set up as a typical haunted house-type horror setting. However, the twist is that the ghost stories are really just stories. Instead, the house was secretly being used by the CIA as a front for bizarre experiments. The “ghosts” and “monsters” that the main characters see in the game are actually test subjects that escaped captivity. (Basically, the game is set up like Silent Hill but is revealed to be more along the lines of Resident Evil)

The ghost hunters / the playable characters:

1) Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson - Agents of SHIELD) as the smart, cool one / the archetypal “horror movie final girl” 

2) Steven Yeun (Glenn Rhee - The Walking Dead) as the superstitious one / the horror movie character who believes they are an expert in horror tropes

3) Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy - Game of Thrones) as the jerk member who just wants to get laid

4) Zoe Boyle (Trinity Ashby - Sons of Anarchy) as the vain popular one who also acts like a complete jerk

5) Jordan Calloway (Khalil Payne - Black Lightning) as the scaredy-cat who got dragged into this mess by his friends

6) Jessica Parker Kennedy (Nora West-Allen - The Flash) as the adorkable nerdy one who is the most knowledgeable in the mansion’s history

7) Anthony Head (Rupert Giles - Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as the de facto leader of the ghost hunters and the team’s mentor/father figure

Fic you spent the most time on:  Uh, probably where i’m going now, I don’t know or Just a Whisper in the Dark, both of which had years between starting and finishing. Sometimes you start things and then you apparently are not ready to finish them. 

Fic you spent the least time on:  Paint a Heart Repeating, Beating I wrote all in one day, I’m pretty sure. I expect no one to read that ever, because it’s such an old fandom but every once in awhile I get a comment on it and it’s always the best, nicest surprise. 

Longest fic:  It’s Giving Up on Greener Grasses! It’s 111,908 words. I spent a comparatively short amount of time on it because I churned out those chapters weekly and it was... a lot of work. But I loved writing that story and I truly love how people love it. 

Shortest fic:  lol it’s called Birthday Suit and it’s 467 words. Maybe it was... a prompt?

Most hits: all i know is we said hello and your eyes looked like coming home has 27,163 hits which is craaazy. I feel a little like it’s cheating because it’s a collection of prompts so it’s 23 different stories but whatever, I’ll cheat. 

Most kudos: Also all we know... at 1,376 kudos. Thanks guys, I love kudos. 

Most comment threads: Same as above at 716 comment threads. People were really into those prompts. Those prompts... broke me. Let us never speak of it. 

Fave fic you wrote: Oh, I think it depends on the day, but I think Greener Grasses today. 

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I actually just did this! I often go in and change a sentence or give a polish to older fics. Move the furniture around, as @thiswillonlyhurtalittle says. But I totally rewrote A Slow Convergence line by line because it was 14 years old and it needed to be... better. Don’t rewatch old shows, you will only make work for yourself. 

Share a bit of your WIP or share a story idea that you’re planning: I’m really not writing anything right now. I do have long abandoned WIPs that I will probably never finish but also never delete because I like them. For instance, I wrote a follow up to Gone that picks up on the story and it’s almost 10k so why didn’t I finish it? Shrug.

Buffy wore one of her mother's dresses to the funeral. She didn't have a dress in her bag, only functional clothing - heavy boots and her leather jacket, but she fit into the black dress beautifully. Giles zipped it up for her - and she looked, suddenly, 30-years-old. He watched her brush the mascara on to her eyelashes and rummage through her mother's make-up drawer for lipstick. After the service, she stood in the kitchen, taller in her mother's heels, and accepted the casserole dishes and pies that people left with her. When they had all gone, Giles kissed the back of her neck and wrapped his arms around her.

"I love you," he whispered softly. This was not something they spoke about often, love. Devotion, yes, and loyalty. They'd discussed their connection to one another, their bond, the ancient magic that seemed to point them in the same direction always, but never love. Love seemed a choice, somehow.

"I know," she answered.
