Who is eligible for this bracket?

Any character that is a sidekick, best friend, or even assistant to a ‘bigger’ or ‘more important’ character. These characters are often overshadowed by the other character, either in their media, or in their fandom. This ‘bigger’ character does not have to be the main character, nor do they have to be a hero or a good person in the story.

No real people- this bracket is looking for fictional characters. Characters portrayed by real people are welcome of course! Just no celebrities / influencers for this one.

Not completely sure if your character fits the theme? Submit them anyway! If they don’t fit, there’s no harm done.

Submission Rules

Character’s name, the character they are connected to, what their role is (friend, sidekick, etc.), the media they are from. A picture is appreciated, but not necessary.

Submitting propaganda along with the character is encouraged (but not necessary.) Tell us why you think your character should win!

Welcome to This Must Be the Tourney, the latest (and this pollmaker’a debut) entry in the field of increasingly specific Tumblr gimmick brackets.

Our competitors, you ask? None other than the different covers of Talking Heads’ 1983 Classic, “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” - Because goddamn, there are a lot of them! Maybe even enough to give someone the crazy idea of making them fight to the death!

Rules are the same single elimination bracket you’re used to, with one minor twist: The Talking Heads’ original 1983 studio and 1986 live versions of the song will not be included in the primary bracket. Instead, they will both be given byes all the way to the semifinals, where the victors of the main bracket will finally get to face off with the versions that started it all!

Participant Conditions are just what you’d expect: If it’s a version of the Talking Heads’ This Must Be The Place, it’s eligible for entry - Although the pollmaker will be doing their level best to make include only one entry per band. Other than that, knock yourselves out - Live performance, studio performance, street performance, shittiest mic you’ve ever heard performance - If they’ve got a place, this must be it.

Tumblr “culture” (trends) is so short lived and self-contained I sincerely find it really funny. There’s a gimmick blog tournament going around right now that is like 90% blogs created this year with zero mentions to blogs like I-am-a-fish or tbh me who’d been posting consistently for years and only stopped recently bc of outside circumstances. I saw one of the (relatively new!!!) blogs reblog the poll they were in with their propaganda being ‘I’ll start posting again if you vote for me’

Btw in case anyone is curious on the exact behind-the-scenes of the final poll I'll put that below the cut.

Firstly, I gotta pat myself on the back for the idea of a personality quiz. I knew if I did a straight up gerrymandered poll against Jaylen she would have probably have BETTER odds cause people who (correctly) thought of my as the antagonist of this blog would vote for her because it was a vote against me. And from there people would easily coordinate 1 option to all vote for. So I hid the gerrymandering out of sight, and made the gimmick fun so that people didn't ignore it outright.

Now lets go over how exactly it was gerrymandered. Each answer to each question was either a Senshi answer or a Jaylen answer. To get Jaylen you had to get more of her answers then senshi's (so 3, since there are 5 questions)

On question 1 you will immediately see my trick. Despite there being 5 options only 1 gives Jaylen. I saw quite a few guess as much so I'll quickly list all the other Jaylen answers. for "feelings on necromancy" her's is "I'm literally a reanimated corpse", For the door you gotta say fuck you, and for my sentence you gotta pick eternal failure.

Keen eyed ඞmong you may realise that I skipped "pick one of the things I just made made up question" That is because all the answers to that question are Senshi answers. The question is purely to tilt the odds more in my favor, poke fun at uQuiz, and reference Gloopgolp World.

Welcome to the only Tumblr gimmick Blog where we determined who can ACTUALLY beat Saitama!

This blog was entirely inspired by this post, and we used the same rules to determine who can actually beat Saitama from One Punch Man. So a character could ONLY win if they 1: Have some possible way of being able to not get punched even once, and 2: (this is the important one) If it is funnier for them to win then it is to lose. therefore Goku and Superman already lose by this tournament's logic.

This blog was entirely powered by submissions for who to have, and polls to see if they win. We are no longer taking submissions because I got punched.

I feel like some of us have that region that isn't "for them", and Galar was DEFINITELY that region to me:

Like, the story was pretty boring thanks to the hyperfixation it had on Gyms. And then when something interesting would happen, Leon would show up and redirect you. I get what they're going for, he's their unbeatable Champion and it's nice he's getting involved with the affairs of his region, but it came at a downside. (I feel like Alder was better since the player still felt relevant to the plot, even tho he was pretty active and involved too.)

Most of the major characters just weren't utilized well, fell flat, or annoyed me (tho there's some I liked, like Sonia, Piers, and Raihan) Like, we FINALLY have a jerk rival after two decades, and he's forced out of the plot midway in (due to his own decisions, but still wanted more with Bede), and I think Marnie only really got as popular as she did because of her design, because she's kinda forgettable personality-wise. 🤷‍♀️ There's way more going on with Piers imo. Hop was ok, but I think they could have done a bit more with him. (Maybe if they had explored him growing up in Leon's shadow more?)

I feel like this is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I just never vibed with Leon and the way the games and anime shilled him just always rubbed me the wrong way. He's not the worst Champion, that still goes to Diantha, but between how the games just use him to redirect the player and the character-shilling, I just kinda found him annoying. 😔 (I tend to not really like showboaty characters most of the time, tho there's a few exceptions like Alastor. I feel like if they got the charisma to back it up, I might end up liking them, but sometimes, it just comes off as kinda lame instead. Imo, the charisma is there more for anime Leon over the games version.)

The idea of minor League Gyms was neat, but we never really got anything with them until Klara and Avery. Like, we can assume Allister/Melony and Bea/Gordie were minor League depending on what game you play, but in the games they're not Gym Leaders, they don't even appear.

I also hated them forcing me into a Gym Uniform in-game for those battles/League fights. (Let me keep my drip, dammit.)

The villain plots ticked me off. I've already gone after Rose a couple times in this blog, but if the energy crisis had been a few decades away, I could understand the rush and frustration with Leon, but 1000yrs was way too big a window. The Royal Brothers are meant to be annoying and ridiculous, and they definitely hit their mark there.

The box Legendaries were the most boring duo for me (They're not Pokemon I dislike, they're fine. The other box Legends were just cooler. I like the more eldritch Mons tho, so I really loved Eternatus.)

The base game's wild area felt really limited and small once you find your way around. The Crown Tundra's was way better, not to mention Paldea's.

I didn't really care for the Dynamax gimmick. (I've always been a Mega Evolution guy tho. Gigantamax could be cool, I think I just like the alternate forms.)

I will say that the DLC improved quite a bit imo. I liked characters like Peony and Mustard, the exploration was an improvement and the quests were fun, and it was cool seeing the interactions between Gym Leaders and such in the Galarian Star tournament. They also get bonus points for bringing back two of my favorite Pokemon, Volcarona and Magnezone. (I also feel like the Galar-original Mons were pretty good overall, and same with the clothing options.)

But like, by the time we got out of Gen8 and into Paldea for everything (well, the games and the anime anyway, wasn't the biggest JN fan either, I still have to catch up on Adventures), I was so happy. Technical issues with SV aside, I've enjoyed Gen9 a lot more overall.

Hey, it’s @blorbo-gerrymandering (and by extension @who-do-i-know-this-man)‘s mirror self. While this may appear to be a normal Jaylen Hotdogfingers appreciation blog, it is in fact a blorbo popularity contest. You’re free to organize and whatever else. Actually PLEASE do propaganda and tag me in it I’d love to see what you all come up with given this blog’s gimmick.

HOWEVER! Speaking of that!

You’re not going to know who you’re voting for (unless you’re observant)! I will be providing brief descriptions, and will refresh the descriptions to be longer (or include more/different details, we'll see. Depends on how much time I have during this tbh) each round, so as the contestants narrow down, you get a clearer and clearer idea of who you’re voting for! After the tournament ends, I will provide a de-anonymized version of the bracket, so you can all see how things shook out. Maybe you’ll find someone interesting you never knew about! The only potential for bias in this tournament is “since I had to choose the characters to avoid you all knowing them off the bat, there might be more blorbos from my current interest(s), for obvious reasons.”

Hello again! The submission period for this year's tournament is now slightly more than halfway over! As a reminder, submissions are open from May 1 to May 15, and will close May 16, 12:00 UTC. If YOU have a Bug Fables OC you want to put into a tournament, then please do it before we close, as we do want to see your OCs and/or make cool beast designs for them. The link to the form is here, if you missed it, and the rules are pinned on our blog.

We are also using this opportunity for an FAQ. Under the cut, if you so desire. Most of these are things we've been asked while pitching this via Discord or similar - hopefully, this clears things up somewhat, if you've had questions! Our askbox is open, as always. Hope to see you soon!

Q: What's this tournament about? A: Exact same as any other Tumblr poll-based tournament you may be familiar with, but with Bug Fables OCs. The gimmick here is from us, stemming from something we did last year - Marigold is a charmsmith specializing in transmutation, and she transmutes the losers of each round into beasts. In terms of what this actually... means, if your OC loses a match, we will design your character as a Creature of some variety. If you don't want us to do this, then the form has an opt-out button, and if you have specific requests regarding this, then we have a whole optional part of the form for that.

Q: Will there be gore in this tournament? A: Probably not! Gore is hard to draw and depending on how well-populated the tournament gets we might be drawing upwards of sixteen characters a week! You can, like, specially request it in your Special Requests if you want, but you'll have to specifically be opting in to it. It's a "we aren't opposed to it we just don't want to put in a ton of extra work for something that may not even appeal to the OC owner" thing.

Q: What if you don't have enough OCs to populate the bracket? What if you have too many OCs for a standard bracket? A: We've got like a week between submissions closing and the tournament starting so we'll cross that bridge when we get there we guess.

Q: Will there be a loser's bracket this year? A: Maybe! We'll put a poll out for it later. Depends primarily on whether or not the summer heat actually cooks our brain or not. If so, we'll probably use the transmutation portraits.
