And then did some internet sleuthing about it.

Didn't Dems use Obama to win Black voters after losing the previous election to Bush cuz Al Gore (like Clinton) lost?

And didn't they blame the 3rd party candidate Ralph Nader for Al Gore's loss?? Much like they blamed Bernie Bros?? Even tho the truth was that al Gore was hardly better and lacked the charisma Bush had? (Again, like Trump?)

So are we sure this is actually democrats conceding anything at all?? Are we not sure they put Kamala in the WH just to adjust voters to the idea of her being president anyway? That maybe they do realize the need for change but have chosen to err on the side of token progress that keeps them in power...again?

And y'all elected Biden.

Who, outside the homoerotic Biden/Obama memes, people didn't like (and I'd argue those memes are what made him likeable to the younger generations to begin with).

But things have been tense, haven't they? The displeasure of voters didn't completely go away when Biden remained a centrist. It wasn't enough, especially when he supported genocide. And now they give us Kamala after we wanted Biden to step down for supporting Israel?

....But she still supports Israel?

Nobody knows how/if progressives will show up for Kamala because we can all feel how much Kamala isn't pleasing anyone. The tension is still palpable. Democrats have made an awful bet.

And I am DONE.

Dems have been manipulating voters away from 3rd parties every single election while making promises they never keep good on, while doing NOTHING to actually protect any of us or make anything better. While killing people, deporting them, and justifying war crimes! While liberals promise to push them left and never do and ALSO tell everyone not to vote 3rd party "right now"

All they do is perpetuate the systems that serve each other. I mean we're in 2000 & 2008 again, politically. Already.

They will never ever systematically support progress the way that 3rd parties do. And they don't care to listen or change cuz they know they can Force you to vote for less by making sure that a centrist Democrat is always on the ticket with ballot access in every state and nobody else is.

If progress is what you want it's time to Genuinely start listening to people who tell you a vote for democrats is worthless for your goals.

So unless you have a better idea or plan to start burning shit down yourself then your most realistic option to break out of this abusive cycle is to vote 3rd party.

Cycles don't end on their own, that's the thing about cycles in fact.

So vote 3rd party. Yeah it's scary. Yeah it might not work. But again, do you have a better idea? Because what we're doing and have been doing for the last 30 years, this "lesser evil" & "vbnmw" thing was the liberals' idea and that isn't working for any of us At All. Its keeping us here in this cycle where nothing gets better but it can Always get worse.

If you can't vote 3rd party in your state ask yourself why that is then do something about it.

Quit expecting democrats to give a shit about the equality you need when you've been protesting genocide for nearly a year and they still welcomed the war criminal for a conversation in the white house.

Any right you've won under democrats is as superficial as Obama's executive order and that's been proven.

Hi! So Beanie Boos were first released in 2009. The first wave of them was exclusive to the UK, and they are actually considered to be the most rare beanie boos!

I’ll be inviting some guests from the show to answer questions from this, the radio 1 tombola. One Direction hello” we all reply to Matt saying hi back “did you ever dream when your journey began that you’d be here backstage at Wembley in a toilet for the teen awards?”

“We dreamed about it everyday” Harry says making me giggle. Louis is sat leaning against the wall with his feet on the sink. Harry and Zayn are stood leaning on the wall. Niall is knelt on the floor, Liam is sat on the floor under the sink and I’m sat on the sink next to Louis.

“Now as you can see in front of you is the radio 1 tombola. Niall give it a spin, dip in and pull out a question” Niall give the tombola a spin then takes out a question “ok question 1. When did you last offend someone?” Liam explains that he had accidentally told one on the x-factor contestants good luck but they had already been voted out “next question if you were a puppeteer what voice would you give to your puppet?”

“Hello I’m… I’m James the puppet…. I went Irish, he’s relatable that’s why he’s James”

“I’ve invented a game for you. What you have to do is take these pieces of paper. Don’t show each other, it will have someone’s name on it so don’t show anyone else” Phil says. I take a little look at the name I have, Harry “your going to have 30 seconds to draw that person. Go” the boys all turn to the table but me and Niall look at one another. I pout at him since we’ve been left out

“Oh no YN and Niall have a disadvantage right now” Phil get me and Niall a pen and paper. Mines fairly easy. Just draw a lot of hair.

30 seconds go far to quickly. We show each other our pictures

“Who do we think Harry has drawn?” Dan asks laughing

“Ya know what I’m gonna frame this” I say looking at Harry’s drawing of me making everyone laugh “no you know what I want all of them. I’m gonna frame all of them or make one big picture with them” I take the pictures from the boys. I write down the date on the back of the pictures and who draw what.

I listened to Paul F. Tompkins' stand-up last week, a bandwagon-jumping move in anticipation of the fact that he might be doing Taskmaster. Listened to three of his albums and his TV special. I enjoyed them. They were a bit different than I'd expected, and I'm not sure why as I don't think I had any particular reason to expect anything in particular from his stand-up. I think I'd heard him compared to Mike Birbiglia before, so I may have been surprised when he didn't jump out any windows.

It was good though. I sort of stereotype American comedy as thinking it's all about sex and drugs, and Paul F. Tompkins... I mean, there were some drugs stories. More than I usually like. I don't object on puritan grounds or anything, I just find them fairly boring. But besides that, I liked his stories. The first couple of albums were fairly entertaining mostly unconnected routines, then I got to his 2012 album Labouring Under Delusions, which was a chronological autobiographical thing, and I thought that was fantastic. Takes you through from dropping out of college to hosting TV shows and acting in movies.

I did find it funny how his "showbiz stories" differed from what I'm used to, in terms of levels of glamour. British comedians tell name drop-y stories about "one time I was on a panel show and Jimmy Carr was there", Paul F. Tompkins' one was "One time I was reading for a movie and Tom Cruise showed up!"

To be honest, the main effect that stand-up had on me was reminding me how much I loved BoJack Horseman, which I tried to re-watch but somehow did not have it in my Non-British Sitcom sub-folder of my comedy hard drive, which is a massive oversight. That folder is meant to be for any show where I've seen every episode many times, at some point in the past 20 years, and have at times had in rotation as the go-to thing to put on when I'm eat a meal or staying up at night or something and would like televisual accompaniment. Preferably something I've already seen many times so it's an easy watch. I made that folder because it's nice to have those at my fingertips, so I don't have to mess around with the effort of increasingly sketchy streaming sites when I'm just trying to put on a show that I want to watch while being lazy.

So I downloaded BoJack Horseman, and while I was at it fixed a few other oversights, and I'm fairly sure this folder now covers most of my possible go-tos:

It's my non-British sitcoms folder, unable to be just named "American sitcoms" because the Australian show Utopia is in there. Which I liked a lot for its first few seasons, and then it went weird right-wing in the last couple.

I meant to only dip into a couple of episodes of BoJack Horseman, but then I accidentally re-watched the entire first two seasons in about three days. God, that show is impressive. The continuity, the attention to detail, the background jokes, the foreground jokes, the complexities of characters.

I forgot how much happened in seasons 1 and 2. I think it may have got a bit uneven after those first couple, which may be why the stuff I remember most was near the beginning (and from the last season, which I also remember well and liked a lot). But those first seasons were very good.

I was also reminded of conversations I used to have with my friend, years ago, who watched BoJack Horseman and told me no fictional character had ever reminded him as much of a real person as Diane Nguyen did of me. And that is definitely the fictional character I relate to the most, out of all the fictional characters I've ever encountered. I'd love to say that makes me special in some way, but I'm pretty sure they were just really good at writing disillusioned self-hating frustrated feminists, better than anyone else I've seen try to do a character like that. Pretty sure the world is full of people who would look at that one and say "Oh yeah, that's what it's like. It's not that dramatic, it just makes you not want to go to work anymore." If you don't have a part where she spends three months sitting on her friend's couch drinking beer and throwing cans at the wall because life is pointless and nothing would be accomplished by going to work anyway, you haven't written the disillusioned feminist right. I'd forgotten that the part where Diane gets into a public fight with a powerful sex pest, loses that fight and gets told by all her friends that it's not a big deal even though every person on every side of that fight agrees that he did do all that stuff, then she goes off to try to work for a charity and learns that that is also bullshit, then spends three months drinking beer on a couch and giving up on life - that's all in season 2. For some reason I'd remembered that as taking place across multiple seasons. They really fucked with her across 12 episodes.

I love the way that show would play with perspective, write the rom-com episode from the POV of the character who was being inconvenienced by all the protagonist's romantic epiphanies, the wacky sitcom plots from the perspective of the characters who had to get shit done. And for the first while it looks like BoJack Horseman gets to be the brooding depressed main character and maybe Diane is the One Girl Who Could Be Brooding Enough To Understand Him For All His Flaws, With Her Cynical Wit. Like a reverse manic pixie dream girl. But by the end of season 2, we've seen enough from her perspective to see that actually it's her who's too flawed for everyone else, and she's just decided everyone else can sort their own lives out while she sits in the living room explaining:

Anyway, sorry for starting a post about Paul F. Tompkins and finishing it about a fictional character (played very well but also rather problematically by Alison Brie, who is very white to be playing the Vietnamese-American character), I quite enjoyed his stand-up. I have also quite enjoyed suddenly and unexpectedly re-watching his sitcom all weekend. Though I might need a palette cleanser after being immersed in the levels of cynicism that show reached. Perhaps Community, for a far more hopeful tone and Alison Brie playing an excellent and more racially appropriate character.

The longtime rock ’n’ roller has landed her spaceship in Nashville, and she intends to stay

A musician, writer and longtime “it girl,” Bebe Buell has lived a mystical life in the world of rock ’n’ roll — a life most could only dream of, from growing up in the South to living with nuns, weaving herself into New York City’s 1970s arts scene, raising actress Liv Tyler and juggling various creative projects of her own.

Buell’s heart has always been in music. She could have pursued acting, prolonged her successful modeling career or even married one of her many rock-star lovers, but Buell had her own life to live, her own stories to tell, her own songs to sing. And she still does.

The Scene recently caught up with Buell backstage at a 3rd & Lindsley show dedicated to New York City’s ’60s and ’70s rock scene. She was there to join legendary local cover outfit The Long Players and her husband Jim Wallerstein, who formerly played with Das Damen and co-produces Buell’s music. On this recent Saturday night, Buell recounted her friendships with Patti Smith and Nico before singing “Because the Night,” “Femme Fatale” and other tunes in her rich contralto croon. While the show was dedicated to others’ music, Buell has her own discography — dating back to the ’80s and featuring a wide range of raw, energetic rock tunes both as a solo artist and with her bands The B-Sides and The Gargoyles. Throughout her music career, she’s worked with heavy hitters including Todd Rundgren, Rick Derringer and Ric Ocasek, as well as local legends like Jon Tiven and Dave Roe.

Buell spent most of her life in NYC. But after recording a track for ​​Plowboy Records’ tribute album You Don’t Know Me: Rediscovering Eddy Arnold in 2012, she was enticed by the spiritual connection she felt with Nashville. Since relocating, she says she’s formed countless friendships and performed at just about every venue in town, including frequent appearances at the recurring Thee Rock N’ Roll Residency.

“I live it every day,” says Buell of honoring those memories without getting lost in the past. “I’m an active singer, songwriter, performer, writer. I have bestsellers. I am not just sitting there, melancholy, thinking about the cool guys I dated when I was 24.” 

Frustrated by local challenges such as the GOP-controlled state legislature’s attacks on reproductive rights, Buell was considering leaving Tennessee when Rebel Soul was released. But events like the Covenant School shooting and the subsequent expulsions of Democratic state Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson — along with the Republican supermajority’s attempted expulsion of Knoxville Democrat Gloria Johnson — have since convinced her to stay. “I’m not turning my back on this town,” she says.

“I realized that I want to be here to help with the change. I want to use my voice, not to hurt anybody, not to call people names, not to finger-point, not to point out what’s obviously wrong — we already know what’s wrong. What we need to do now is focus on what we can do to make it right.”

You talking about a Lego Monkie Kid and TMNT 2012 and/or ROTTMNT crossover and/or reincarnation crossover au thing brings me so much joy. Can't tell u how much I now that in my life as someone who loves both TMNT and LMK so much.

In ROTTMNT, nothing is really hold serious there, and I prefer it that way.

But TMNT 2012, I would say Mikey is MK. Rather basic but those are the best.

Tang Shen is related to Tang(cuz name and stuff), and Macaque is somehow roped into the Hamato life because he got acquaintance with Shen. How? Not sure yet.

Really debating hard if Mei to have reincarnated memories or not. Like do I want her as Mei, and actually a human friend that likes the Hamato because they didn’t save her or have April or Karai to be her.

While Mikey’s brothers is either still the same but different species eggs that Splinter had the sudden urge to steal and have no regrets on doing so or Im taking some characters in LMK to be reincarnated.

Unless we go to the crazy, dark, and depressing timeline where Mikey is the only one reincarnated and didn’t that like, so he decided to use his clones and use glamour on them and ta-da! Hamato family 2.0!

I really can’t do IDW right now since it’s not yet finished and I don’t have access to Vol 14

'Peaky Blinders was conjured out of stories its creator Steven Knight was told as a child. Larger-than-life images from his parents’ Birmingham families had been burnt onto his nine-year-old mind. A mountain of silver coins piled on a table in a shabby terraced house. Bare-knuckle boxers bound at the wrists and pushed into the canal for losing a fight. Gypsy horse fairs. Barefoot children running messages for illegal bookmakers. A pub called The Chain whose only drinkers were factory women who’d beat any man who dared enter. And immaculately dressed gang members who’d swapped the mud of their WWI uniforms for crisp creases and sharp tailoring. It was all magic and glamour, to the mind of a child.

That was how Peaky Blinders chose to present the past on screen – as somewhere heightened, glamorous and now. It wanted to evoke in its viewer the awe of a kid marvelling at unforgettable things. Forget the drudgery of realism, the show’s 1920s Birmingham would be a place where fairy tale kings and queens walked through fiery streets, towered over by pulsating industry and non-stop newness. For once on screen, the British working classes wouldn’t be drab and pitiful, they’d be mythic and cool. As Knight told Den of Geek, “let’s do legends.”

One detail from Knight’s childhood legends, as reported in GQ Magazine, was his father’s memory of seeing the real Peaky Blinders gang dressed to the nines. “Every crease as sharp as the razors in their hats, reflections in their toe caps, dicky bows and ties pulled tight on studded collars.”

Everything about the men projected wealth and status, Knight’s dad told him… apart from the glasses from which they were drinking. These expensively dressed gangsters were knocking back whiskey not from pricey crystal, but recycled jam jars. Knight explains: “The money was in the fibre and the leather of their clothes, in their grooming and their guns. Not a penny of that fortune would be spent on anything so mundane as kitchenware.”

You might say that approach to priorities was shared by Peaky Blinders the show. When it arrived in 2012, what counted was the first impression. The look – as designed by series one director Otto Bathurst and his art teams – was the thing. Forget the mundane, it was all about impact.

No Hovis-Ad Nostalgia

Impact was unarguably made by Peaky Blinders‘ opening sequence, in which Cillian Murphy’s character rides on horseback through the gristly, teeming streets of Birmingham’s Small Heath. Filmed as one long, continuous shot, it introduces Tommy Shelby as a feared and respected local king, the protagonist in a British Western. Just as importantly, it also introduces Peaky Blinders as not-your-average-period-drama. Don’t expect the grateful poor, the kindly gentry and Hovis-ad nostalgia. This place is alive with modernity.

You only have to look at the skyline to see that. Instead of the CGI set extension faithfully recreating what real canal-side inner city Birmingham would have looked like with an historian’s accuracy, director Bathurst chose impact. Bigger. Higher. More impressive. His reference points weren’t archive maps, but Blade Runner and Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One.

Like the gang members drinking from jam jars, the creators of Peaky Blinders faced the question of where best to use their money. As producer Jamie Glazebrook confirms here, in 2012, Peaky Blinders had a budget of around £7.5 million for the entire first series, a snip compared to Game of Thrones $60 million first season, and The Rings of Power’s $450 million season one price tag. Achieving the cinematic look sought by Otto Bathurst and Director of Photography George Steel – both of whom won Baftas for their work on the first series – with a BBC Two purse, would mean sacrificing some things in favour of others.

That opening sequence, DoP George Steel told this Esquire Oral History, sucked up an inordinate amount of Peaky Blinders‘ cash. “We spent all our special equipment budget was spent on that first shot, with the horse and the Russian arm [a crane camera mounted on a car],” says Steel. “Otto was adamant that we shoot it all as one shot and the only way that we could really do it was on a Russian arm, which is £10,000 a day.”

“After that we ended up with very rudimentary equipment, which is why a lot of it looks the way it looks. It has that slightly old fashioned feel, because we didn’t have the money to whizz around on technocranes.”

Location manager Andy Morgan backs Steel up. “The budget for Peaky had pretty much been spent halfway through the series.” Producer Jamie Glazebrook told The BBC Academy Podcast in the early days, “There was a terrible point at the end of the first series where every scene, we kept on saying ‘we can’t do this location, could this happen in the Garrison Pub?’ and Steve [Knight] was like, ‘This is going to become like Coronation Street soon, everything going back to the Garrison!'”

Sometimes, Glazebrook continues, necessity was the mother of invention. At the climax of series one, Knight had written a big action set-piece between the Peaky Blinders and racecourse king Billy Kimber’s gang. “There was going to be a huge gun fight and we just didn’t think we were going to be able to achieve it. Rather than do things in a half-arsed way, it’s better to do fewer things really well than to do lots of stuff badly, so we said to Steve we don’t think was can have a huge gun fight.”

As a solution, Knight wrote the gun fight to the point that both sides were lined up, facing each other and armed, and then – a classic Peaky Blinders twist. Sophie Rundle‘s character Ada Shelby, dressed in widow’s weeds, pushes a baby carriage right into the no-man’s land between the two sides and tells the boys to shut up and listen. They were all in France, they know what happens next, they all know who’ll wear black for them. Fight if they want to, says Ada, but her baby isn’t moving and neither is she. It’s a brilliant dramatic moment, and a better surprise than any expensive action scene could ever have been.

Enter: Tommy Shelby

The opening shot that took such a big chunk out of the first series budget was only four minutes long, but its legacy is inestimable. It’s a masterclass in world-building, and a fitting introduction to a series that would become, without overstatement, iconic.

The opening words spoken on Peaky Blinders aren’t in English, but Cantonese. There’s a panicked exchange among members of a Chinese community. A girl has been summoned, and nobody seems to want to keep the summoner waiting. As Steven Knight’s stage directions say “We might think we are in Shanghai until we see a caption…. BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, 1919.”

The first we see of the man on the horse is the shine on his boot, the neat, clean cut of his suit and his closely shaved hair under a Stetson Hatteras flat cap. Women and children scatter as he rides bareback into a slum and stops to pay the Chinese fortune teller in pound notes. The girl performs “the powder trick”, whispering an incantation and blowing a cloud of red dust into the air. It’s a spell to make the horse win a race, whispers a watching kid in awe. “The horse’s name is Monaghan Boy,” says Tommy Shelby, “Kempton 3 o clock Monday. You ladies have a bet yourselves but don’t tell anybody else.” Profitable bookies’ wildfire rumour thus begun, he rides on.

Tommy rides to the opening bars of Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand” – a song from 75 years further down the century – past iron barges, through a pile of a city, layered and growing, dressed in smoke and fire. He turns down Garrison Lane, its spill of people parting around him. A Jamaican street preacher touches the rim of his hat as Tommy passes, men drink and gamble outside a pub, a trio of blind war veterans troop past and he puts coins in their cup, kids dart around, fires belch, sacks are hauled, locals square up to each other, and two policeman tip their hats in salute with a “Morning Mr Shelby.”

Finally, we see the rider’s face in profile as Nick Cave’s song tells us “He’s a ghost, he’s a god, he’s a man, he’s a guru. You’re one microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan, designed and directed by his red right hand.” A tubular bell clangs, and Peaky Blinders begins. Out of pocket, maybe, but never out of ideas, and never looking back.'
