This is so badly edited but I got bored and started making this three hours ago and I finally finished it (it’s 3 am)

There is actual lore and context and stuff this idea/au I guess whatever you call it but I just. It’s 3:38 am take it and I’ll explain everything later on maybe if I feel like it

@papersirens suggested a "suguru is your pen pal" story and that has been living in my head rent free for weeks.

Anyway it's been a pretty exhausting week, I hope this still makes sense in my head. .....

Suguru spends most of his time on trains, shuttling himself from mission to mission, and then back again. Sometimes by himself, but not always. Still, he's finding himself alone much more often than he would like.

In theory, this gives him ample time to collect his thoughts, to re-read your letters and to compose a more thoughtful response. But he finds that he doesn't like what his mind says when it settles, so he's started drawing pictures instead.

Sunlight on an empty classroom. A snail. The cat that supposedly looks like Satoru–which Suguru assumes is a myth or more likely a prank at his expense. The alleged cat will not stay still long enough to get a picture (very unSatoru-like behavior), and although everyone else on campus has seen it accidentally, it cannot be bothered to cross paths with Suguru even when he goes looking… which is very on brand for Satoru now, unfortunately.

Suguru often draws the people he sees on the train. He usually throws in the cat, and if it's a particularly busy picture, he'll throw in a few curses. Not the grotesque ones, but the tamer, less threatening kind–curses that could plausibly pass as a Digimon, for example, or something similar. Sometimes you'll write back what you think they are; he's learned about all kinds of cartoon characters this way. But whenever you ask, he treats it like a bit of a Rorschach test:

"Is this supposed to be rush hour?" "On a bad day." "Morning or evening?" "Guess." "Hm… everyone's sleepy, so it must be morning…?" "Look closer." "…what's that gross-looking blob doing on a packed train car." "What blob?" "Top left, next to the students. It's got big eyes and weird wings?" "Interesting," he says, as if this wasn't his own artwork. "What do you think it is?" "It can't be an angel, can it? It's much too ugly…"

He plays it off with a light heart. But deep down, he's waiting for the day you admit to seeing the unseen. It doesn't have to be curses. If you could just see what's inside him, that would be enough.

I thought she was pretty (even if her design felt just a tiny bit plain lol). Wish we got to know her a little more, but I still think her character was interesting.

I really don't want to talk about the present AO3 controversy (I have opinions, I think anyone paying attention does, but I'm so. Very. Tired. And the internet chews up tired people with opinions and spits them out for fun. So that's not happening).

HOWEVER!

I see many people out there championing Squidgeworld as an alternative to AO3. If you don't like AO3's staff or leadership and want to go somewhere else, this is actually pretty reasonable. The Squidge folks have been doing this a long time, they know what they're doing. They are a smaller team, hosting on smaller infrastructure (a dog knocked over their server once, apparently), but they seem up to the task of running an archive.

However. I also see people talking how Squidgeworld's policies are better than AO3 in various regards. And I want to address this because it's... mostly wrong. There are some differences in the TOSes, but for most of you they will be the same.

First thing, top of the list: Squidge's TOS is much smaller and vaguer than AO3's. A whole ton of rules around tagging in the TOS are just... not there. There's a bunch of information in AO3's TOS about how complaints are treated, that's all gone, any specificity about how Squidgeworld defines what they do or do not consider acceptable behavior is just... not there. In their place, we have Wheaton's Law: "Don't be a Dick". You might thing that covers it all, but a good TOS that makes it clear what is and is not allowed gives a lot of piece of mind. Nothing is worse than waking up to see that you've been given the boot because you and the mods disagreed about what the TOS meant. It sucks, you don't want that. It probably won't happen to most people, especially if you're not an asshole, but it is a thing.

The next thing in the TOS is the CSEM clause (the technical term for most of what people refer to as child pornography), and this is what I heard a lot of people talking about. I have heard people say that Squidge "actually bans child porn". However, the only difference between AO3 and Squidge's policies on CSEM (which is, to be clear, they they do not permit it) The only difference is this line: "This includes anything deemed pro-child sex or child-sex advocacy symbols." The thing is, that's subjective. A fic that involves this kind of content is not necessarily pro-child sex. Yes, even if it's RPF. And no, RPF is not CSAM. Nor is RPF CSEM, which is a broader umbrella term. At least, not under US law or US definitions, which is what both AO3 and Squidge operate under. I have done my best to get the official definitions for these things: RPF isn't covered. This has nothing to do with my opinions on RPF, it's just fact. In short, if you're upset at AO3 for not banning sexually explicit RPF containing real-life minors, Squidgeworld doesn't ban that either. Whether or not it takes down a fic with that kind of content in it is basically down moderation staff opinion on whether it might be advocating for child sex.

Now here's the juicy stuff. Squidgeworld prohibits links to any kind of fundraising... except in the case of original work. So, if you are a writer who posts original work to fic archives and wants to link your Patreon... you can do that on Squidgeworld. Just don't do it on fanfics. Or in the comments or in your profile. Standard AO3 rules everywhere else. Honestly, unless squidgeworld takes off on a scale that is frankly unlikely, this probably won't matter, but for some of you, this is a good thing, and it's worth bringing up.

Squidgeworld, unlike AO3, does not allow AI-generated fanworks. Now, I'm sure a lot of you are very happy, but this does actually present some problems: Specifically, you can't always tell AI generated and human work apart. Sure, a lot of the time it's pretty easy, but you can mask it, and sometimes the output could be confused for real writing. More importantly, real people's writing could be confused for AI writing. I could easily see fic authors being attacked with accusations that their work is AI generated, or co-written with an AI. I don't know if that will happen, but... well, some people are assholes, and fan communities are often drama-laden. It could happen.

Squidgeworld prohibits web scraping for the purpose of use with AI. AO3 basically has the same policy, and they've taken more technical measures to prevent it now that we're aware it's a thing that happens (the first time AO3 was scraped was pre-ChatGPT, people just weren't paying attention to this stuff. I imagine squidgeworld takes similar anti-scraping technical measures, although I don't know for sure). I think people don't think AO3 does this because in the post where they explained this they also said they allowed AI-generated fics, and they went on to say that they couldn't make it impossible for someone to scrape the site and feed that into a machine learning model. That's something Squidgeworld can't do either: if you really want a website scraped, that website can be scraped. This is why AO3 went on to say that archive-locking your work would make it less likely for scrapers to catch it, and that you could do that if you were concerned.

So yeah. I think broadly that these policies shake out mostly the same as they do on AO3 in terms of content. There's more vagueness and subjectivity and more things that malicious users could potentially abuse to waste staff time and attack other users, but... well, you can always submit false reports. That's a problem on AO3 too. Same as it ever was. And hey, at least there won't be any blatantly AI-generated fics over on squidgeworld. Mind, I haven't seen any in any of my fandoms anyways...

so much started going on around september 2023 and just now they started to calm down (or, i started to learn how to deal with it i guess)

Jan 2024 - internationally traveled to place where my parents are from (alone) to go to the funeral and pay respects to prior death, broke up with that one guy (which is a whole ordeal)

Mar 2024 - Interviews for jobs

It was just one thing after another after another and, well, i don't think that was an environment conducive to writing, even if i came up with cool concepts or rambles or stuff like that. i had no energy. and ik i had so many plans but life really said 'no, you stop right there' and essentially paused my fic writings which sucks but oh well. now ive got some stuff figured out and an extra day off so i might be able to pick up where i left off.

Okay now I MUST know more about the dinner with Reigen's parents if you're willing to share?

I have it all written down in note form somewhere bc it was going to be a Issho side story but hhhhhh who on god's green earth knows when I could actually get around to that.

Dinner at Reigen's parents!

-eventually Reigen feels/is guilted by his mom into bringing Teru over to meet his new grandparents. Reigen tells Teru he absolutely does not need to think of them that way

-in the week preceding the visit Reigen is quiet and stressed and it makes Teru really uncomfortable

-dinner is very awkward. Only Reigen's mom is talking and Reigen has this weird fake polite smile that won't go away and Teru does not recognize him. No waving his hands. No silly jokes.

-Teru DOES recognize the behavior though and it haunts him to think Reigen as an adult is acting the way he did at age 8

-when Reigen's dad finally gets in on the conversation he is polite but makes it very clear he thinks this whole situation is less than satisfactory. His less than subtle opinions are that 1. Reigen should get a respectable job. 2. He needs to find a wife if he thinks for one second he is actually going to raise a child, and 3. That he thinks this whole "having Teru" thing is a cry for attention and he needs to grow up

-as he makes it clear he thinks Reigen is not a good fit for being a dad, Teru has had enough of this bs (bc Reigen isn't arguing back he's just getting smaller and frowning at his plate) and loudly states that Reigen is a BETTER DAD THAN YOU

-cue a moment of disbelief from every person at the table including Teru bc he really didn't mean to say that out loud and oh god Reigen's parents look Unhappy. Teru internally panics bc he knows THAT look too and it's been a long time since it was pointed at him

-mom opens her mouth to (scold? He doesn't know) and Reigen stands up and IF YOU YELL AT MY SON YOU CAN KISS US COMING OVER AGAIN GOODBYE. >:(

-parents are very How Dare you speak to your mother that way in her own house? And start lecturing him on why he is proving their point and clearly Teru is learning his manners and-

-Reigen is like Nope. nope this was a stupid idea, I'm sorry Teru. And takes his hand and walks them right out the door and they both cry on the way home and order takeout and watch bad movies until they both fall asleep on the couch
