Obv the beauty standards are different in every tribe and different tribes have different things they do to alter and/or maintain their appearance

Dragons occasionally like to paint their scales or nails using a product they call scale polish, and they make a little design on their scales. They don't normally do all of their scales at once because that's really expensive and looks horrible when it starts to rub off, but I could see a very high class Jewel Hive HiveWing trying to make a statement lol

Dragons also sometimes etch patterns into their horns. Many of them also sand and buff them, keeping them smooth and shiny. Uncommonly, dragons will paint them.

Since SandWings started wearing black eye makeup for sun glare reasons, they've started to experiment with styles. They also paint black patterns on their body scales, or get tattoos.

Dragons, especially IceWings, sometimes wear neckties on special occasions or to their jobs.

Salons are mentioned in the series but not elaborated on. A salon may offer such services as scale buffing, polishing, and painting professionally, as well as horn maintenance, body and ear piercings, etc.

As well as SandWings, SkyWings also sometimes get tattoos. Feathers are a popular tattoo symbol for SkyWings, they also like to get a lot of edgy skulls n stuff

SeaWings are culturally very worried about the health and beauty of their scales and they need them to constantly be smooth and sleek and most importantly, moist. If they spend a lot of time on land their scales dry out and they need Products. They probably use coconut oil. They also would likely emphasize the importance of fat in the diet because of their need to maintain a layer of blubber for underwater

NightWings really like a dragon w glasses I don't know what it is they just go nuts lol

IceWings have been talked about in canon as constantly maintaining the shimmeriness of their scales so yeah

They also occasionally paint their spikies and they also like to wear furs

RainWings just try to be the brightest they can, but sometimes wear flowers and feathers for additional pretty.

Sapphires: Chapter 1

A fanfic/AU/whatever you want to call it I'm going to explore with Orca's statue! I've never really done writing like this before, so we'll see how this goes. Might try out websites like AO3 to host this on??? But I'm sticking to what I know right now. Anyways!! Here's what I've got so far.

"She was so young..."

The heavy stone doors of the Royal Hatchery scraped open. The grating noise was by design, ensuring intruders could not sneak in.

Dim blue light traced the silhouettes of two dragons at the entrance.

"I don't know why she didn't wait a couple more years." One of the dragons conveyed through flashes and gestures, paddling forward.

"Mm." The other lazily flickered back, straining to shut the doors behind them and sealing the room into inky darkness.

One by one, the dragons lit their bioluminescent patterns. The electric teal glow discovered dips in the floor where clusters of eggs awaited, comfortably tucked into tidy seaweed nests. The shells appeared as a muddied grayish-blue, but under proper lighting, they would have glimmered like droplets of brilliant amber. They were arranged by sex—males on one side of the room, females on the other—in spiral shapes.

"Looks like they're all here." The tired SeaWing gestured, turning to leave.

"Looks like you're begging to get your teeth smashed out." The other gestured back, peeking at each nest and counting the eggs. That was meant to be a joke, but they both knew it was hardly far from reality. The queen was fiercely protective of her eggs. The tired SeaWing grumbled but wearily set to work.

There was a lapse of silence. The chatty SeaWing gave small talk another shot: "... That statue is a lot creepier now, huh." His voice was a little stiff.

The tired SeaWing did not answer.

The coral heating tubes that twisted along the walls quietly bubbled.

Hesitant at first, the chatty SeaWing drifted towards the sculpture at the center of the hatchery. He wasn't sure why.

It had been installed less than a week ago. She had insisted it be placed here.

He brought the light from the banded patterns on his arm up to the statue, squinting at its features. It was regal; imposingly majestic. Masterfully chiseled from empress marble; frighteningly realistic. He angled the light further up, revealing an astute face. Various undersea plants intricately weaved around its curving horns—the webbing that flowed down its spine and wing membrane also followed this design.

And the eyes.

They looked just like her eyes.

He rarely saw her eyes. Partially because none of the royals really bothered with him. But her eyes were always elsewhere. Always focused on her next masterpiece or her mother (though, in hindsight, she had probably been focusing more on the throne her mother sat on); however, the few times her eyes parted, he found himself both intrigued and perturbed by them. They were a divine blue. An enchanting blue that compelled you to unlock their secrets, but a haunting blue that would curse you if you ever found the key. A distant blue, but a blue that lingered with you forever.

Her fathomless ocean filled those sapphire eyes.

"Done checking?" The tired SeaWing flashed, startling the chatty SeaWing. "Almost." He forced himself to quickly regain his composure, though his even face betrayed how unnerved he was all of the sudden. Before resuming his duties, he felt drawn to give the statue one more glance.

His eyes fell to the glittering pedestal it perched on. To the name engraved upon it.

Orca.

Couple of headcanons I worked into this (in case you were confused):

• SeaWings eggs look a little more like fish eggs (round and orange). Since deep water filters colors like red, they appear more blue here.

• SeaWings use sign language along with their bioluminescent scales to communicate.

I loved designing her, although I did struggle with the legs a lot and I couldn't draw them like they should be. If you have time, look up the wikipedia image for Prehnite, it's such a pretty stone.

OKAY OKAY I GOT AN IDEA FOR A WINGS OF FIRE AU

I call it the Gold and Silver AU :) Darkstalker, in my eyes, is a silver color while Sunny is obviously gold

In this AU, Sunny, like Darkstalker, is an animus, mindreader, and seer. Totally overpowered, right? Not quite!

Since Sunny has no idea that she's a NightWing-SandWing hybrid, she thinks that the flashes of the future/nightmares and constant voices in her head are hallucinations, and something no one would care about even if she opened up. So she bottles up.

What about the animus magic part?

In this AU, you can't automatically do everything you can do with animus magic the moment you're born. You need to train if you're an animus dragon. Training means knowing how to command objects, dragons, animals, and other things, and commanding them requires an insane level of focus, as well as control over your emotions (if you're too angry, you could possibly kill someone for example). Sunny doesn't even imagine that she's an animus dragon, and if she doesn't even know, why should she train? Her powers are very... Baby, you could say.

Darkstalker wakes up earlier. I still don't know why, but he does, and Sunny can hear his voice due to her mindreading powers. Darkstalker offers her everything she wanted- power, recognition, and answers to everything she has been wondering about. In return, she releases him from his prison. Sunny at this point has left out of her found family of siblings, and is quite angry and lonely because so. She finds comfort in Darkstalker and easily accepts.

I think after that point, Sunny is trained by Darkstalker (but they both don't know that she is an animus). She abandons the Dragonets of Destiny to go hunt for Darkstalker's Scroll, and after literally murdering Chameleon, she learns that she is an animus. Sunny refuses to let Darkstalker out until he has trained her, and even after then, she doesn't destroy the scroll and actually keeps Darkstalker's power to herself. So Darkstalker is not the main threat anymore, but his whispers are corrupting, and Sunny might actually be a world-sized threat for once.

It just occurred to me that the tribe with the least distance between monarch and subject, the only tribe with semi-communal power, the only tribe with no noble class vs peasant class, is the tribe with “no proper leadership” and is “backwards” and “useless” and the literal solution is to have foreign-raised glory seize leadership and start running the tribe the way the other tribes are run

Quiet Nightmares is basically a Wings of Fire AU. It takes place 120~ years from the mainstream books. Animus magic was never taken away and has become more common. One night, as three blood moons rose into the sky (very scary), every animus SNAPPED. They all went mad, regardless of their moral character or how many times they had used their magic. Why??? WHO KNOWS!!!! HOW MYSTERIOUS!!!!!!!

SO, essentially: there is an ani-pocalypse going on now 😀👍

BUT!!! Don't worry!!!! There's prophecy (because when is there not)!!!!! And a bunch of kids (as always) are going to save the day :D Probably!!!! It's an ongoing thing.
