Super Mario Role Reversal AU

Finally starting this fic! I'm so glad you all like my designs for the au! Be prepared for many ghost puns. I hope you find the same enjoyment in this fic!

Chapter 1: A Haunting Heist

The winds wafted through the trees, whispering their sweet sounds throughout the land. The moon shone brightly, illuminating the quiet night around the tree trunk castle.

The sky had been clear that night, stars shining brightly down on the Forest Kingdom and its Goomba inhabitants. All seemed peaceful, though a looming sense of danger said otherwise.

The leaves suddenly shifted, disturbed by something. An airship, painted a deep purple. Clouds and lightning filled the once peaceful sky, wind blew out torches, surrounding the land in darkness and shadows.

The massive iron anchor shot down from the ship, stopping it just a few hundred yards from the front of the castle. It destroyed the grassy plain below, dirt and rubble piling around the crater it made.

The airship landed, and various ramps opened up, purple mist leaking out into the air. Ghosts, ghouls, and specters of all shapes, colors, and sizes poured out in a neat formation, wielding spears, shields and flags. They flew down from all directions surrounding the Forest Kingdom's castle.

They cleared a path down the center, and a purple ghost woman announced to the crowd.

"Behold, the King of the Ghosts!"

She too stepped aside, and the rest of the army turned to the path to face their leader.

The front of the ship had a face carved in their king's image, the mouth opened, revealing his dark silhouette.

King Boo.

A large and powerful Boo. With a round, marshmellow-like form, a gold and purple crown, sharp teeth, and piercing purple eyes. He was a known figure, a feared figure. His tyranny was unmatched with any other ruler. He sent shivers down the spines of many, even his own ghostly subjects. King Boo was on a cruel mission, and he won't let anyone stand in his way.

He floated through the army, hovering at the entrance.

"OPEN THE GATES!" His shrill voice demanded, "Or die..."

The drawbridge cracked and creaked, lowering to open up the wood castle.

An army of their own stood inside, baring their teeth and stomping out to face their oppressors. King Goomboss stood in the middle, stomping his foot to give a signal.

"Attack!"

Goombas charged back at the specters, hurling thorns, sticks, and even themselves out at them. This did nothing to deter the ghosts, as all of their attacks just phased through them.

The attack halted, and Goomboss smirked.

"That is but a taste of our fury. Do you yield?"

King Boo cackled, "I do not."

The ghost woman flicked her wrist and snapped her fingers, sending goombas flying away from the castle entrance. A few of them smacked Goomboss clean in the face, shrinking his down to the size of a normal goomba. Ghosts surrounded the fallen soldiers, taking them prisoner.

King Boo floated forward, raising his arms, charging up purple lightning from his hands. The lightning blasted the castle, setting the front of it aflame.

The fire blazed through the wood, breaking off charred pieces and destroying the castle. Many goombas screamed and shouted, and all Goomboss could do was watch in horror as his home was obliterated right in front of him.

A golden light shined from the center of the castle, King Boo grinned at the sight.

A singular question block rested high in the rubble, now exposed from its protection. He flew right up to it, giving the block a hard smack, enough to crack it right open.

An even greater golden glow emerged from the dust. The Super Star.

King Boo cackled again, "I've finally found it.... and now NO ONE CAN STOP ME!"

Goomboss (Super Mario 64 DS)

Ah yes, back in the days when spin-off characters could appear in mainline games.

Though I must say I find the Goomboss area really interesting. Tree trunks surrounded by poison and dead-looking trees in the foggy background...

What allies does Bowser have in the Phantom Au? You mentioned King Boo. I am assuming King Bomb-omb and Goomboss are also allies too.

At the start of the comic the major ones he has are King Boo, Petey Piranha Plant, King Bomb-omb, Princess Daisy and General Guy (though the latter two are through Luigi).

Before the comic when Kamek was regent they briefly had an alliance with King Wart.

King Goomba or King Goomboss is a super sized Goomba that was created by Bowser using the power of the Star Rod in Paper Mario 64, this is the origin of this character. King Goomboss also goes on to appear in Super Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS. So I've made several posts about the main and paper world sharing events. King Goomboss' existence is reliant on the events of Paper Mario 64. Meaning because he exists in the Main World the events of Paper Mario 64 must have happened in the main world.

Mario movie spoilers!!

Luigi’s mansion, except it’s just Boos haunting/hunting place for scare victims and miscellaneous(like preferred home).

His kingdom is a part of the darklands(creepy forest as shown in the Mario movie, the castle that Luigi enters after being chased, I headcanons to have been an abandoned castle of King Boos(he migrates as a ghost due to not having a set resting place(?). Now this is where I go completely off canon, simply due to the lack of story about him(that I’m aware of).

As a king/lord he assumebly posesses an army of boos and likely a council, but merely doesn’t care all that much for it. Would also like to headcanon a small family of boos(male/female heir, distant relatives, even Lady Bow if we wanna incorporate more characterization, yadda yadda.)

I’m giving him a human form simply for the fun of it, based off “@thegalaxyinapaperbag”s design. I couldn’t find their latest user since it might’ve been changed or simply disappeared.

I’m not sure where else to go from this but he seems to be largely victorian/traditional monarch reigning in my perspective.

The general hierarchy between the big bad rulers of the mushroom kingdom would be

Bowser- Overlord/Emperor

Underlord/Kings- King Bobomb, Petey Piranha(Deceased/enslaved by bowser), Goomboss, King Chomp, Giga Lakitu, and King Whomp.

I like to entertain the idea of Bowser first dominating the rulers before he attempted the mushroom kingdom, just a way to broaden his range. Previous to Bowser’s rule, his potential family lineage may have maintained a clean alliance with the other reigning leaders, before he instigated a breach of treaty and conquered most of the kingdoms. This would include the Goomba, Piranha, Chain Chomp, and Whomp kingdom. I’m going off the narrative that Bowser effectively enslaves the “countries” he conquers. He’d already have his own army of shell turtles, but he’d obviously want a larger army if he planned on conquering the galaxy based off certain games.

I somewhat ignored the Mario movies map simply because I don’t consider it entirely canon? Like to the games timeline of course, as it was made for the simple fact of capitalism. Though I still include some ideas from it just as a basis before I go further into the story.

Here we have a picture of a couple of goombas who are from King Goomboss' Army, as well as being a part of the greater Koopa Army. The goombas come from the "Goomb Forest Province", within the Mushroom Kingdom (according to my fanfic's lore).

In my Mario/(Crossover) Fanfic, the majority of the (bad or evil) goombas are not too bright, clumsy and easily argumentative, (as these goombas are known to feud among themselves quite often and completely ruin their missions due to such feuding).

However, the galoombas (like the one with the flag-cap above) are typically a lot dumber than their more common goomba relatives.

King Goomboss isn't any smarter either, King Goomboss is seen as a sort of hermit-king-wannabe who keeps promising his eventual take over the Mushroom Kingdom, (to the annoyance of Princess Toadstool and the Jumpman Bros).

In fact King Goomboss and the goombas are pretty infamous for being the unreliable, incompetent and the most ignorant of the Koopa Kingdom's allies. However, these (bad or evil) goombas have an unwavering loyalty and zealousness to serve King Koopa, the Koopa Kids and the Koopa Elite.

King Koopa/(Bowser) knows how unreliable his goomba allies are, but he does have his uses for the goombas when it is needed. King Koopa uses the goombas for simple scout missions or as "diversions" to distract the Jumpman Bros, or other enemies of the Koopa Kingdom.

Does plessie exist in this au?

Surprisingly, yes! I don't have a design or personality or really any plans with her, and don't expect to ever see her anytime soon, but she is the ruler of Sea Land!!

All of the territories (Minus Lava Land, the capital) have a sort of mini-ruler in them (Who can NOT be a koopa for... Diversity and equality purposes) Some other mini rulers include King Bob-Bomb, King Penguin, Goomboss, Madame Broode, Whomp King, and Queen Bee. (They all use different titles)

They're all different in their roles. Mayor Bob-Bomb is just a mayor. Nothing special. President Plessie, Emperor Penguin, and Baroness Bon Beehive are just... Another person in their territory—They hang out, help around, like to have fun, and don't have much importance. They are respected, but mostly just 'cuz they're fun to be around. Madame Broode is similar in that she does jack shit. Most Forest creatures don't know who she is. Or anything. Warlord Whomp is a fucking all-powerful dictator :3 And Count Goomboss is a cranky old "get off my lawn" geezer with a hatred for "kids these days." (His territory happens to have the biggest problem with juvenile delinquents. They like to trash his house every chance they get-)

I just realized something

all the different kingdoms in mario (not just the mario movie, but mario in general) have kings.

Koopas: Bowser Bob ombs: King Bob omb Whomps: King Whomp Penguins: the Penguin King (from the mario movie) Boos: King Boo Goombas: Goomboss Bloopers: pretty sure there was a king blooper at some point (probably rules over every underwater creature actually) Bullets and Banzais: King Bill (yes these things get obscure) Lakitus: King Lakitu (promise I'm not making a single one of these names up) Kongs: Cranky Kong there's even other characters with king statuses like Baron Brr, Wart, Hisstocrat (and his wife), King Ka-Thunk, and King Kaliente

but not the Toads. The Toads only have a princess. Which leads to the question: why? Why don't the toads have a king or queen?
