Negli anni '30, prima del GPS, c'era l'Iter Avto, un dispositivo pionieristico per la navigazione stradale che utilizzava mappe cartacee. Funzionava con due rulli che muovevano le mappe in base alla velocità dell'auto, un cavo collegato al tachimetro controllava la velocità di scorrimento. La velocità di scorrimento del display era proporzionale alla velocità dell'auto, quindi mostrava sempre il punto corretto aiutando gli autisti a orientarsi. Il dispositivo era dotato di un set di mappe cartacee. Tuttavia, aveva limitazioni, come la necessità di cambiare le mappe se la destinazione cambiava e richiedeva manutenzione. L'Iter Avto e i suoi antenati rappresentano un importante passo avanti nella storia della navigazione stradale. Sebbene non fossero così avanzati come i navigatori satellitari moderni, questi dispositivi dimostrano come gli ingegneri e gli inventori abbiano sempre cercato di trovare soluzioni innovative per aiutare gli autisti a orientarsi e a raggiungere le loro destinazioni.
