no #1 piper mclean defender here going on a rant !!!
sooo jumping right into it :) her being all "i'm not a stereotypical feminine girl" kinda makes sense considering she's native american and ppl constantly sexualise girls of their culture. also the only female role models she would have had growing up would be women in the film industry and they aren't exactly NOT sexualised by public eyes. her first hand experiences with femininity have always been associated with inferiority and shallowness and surface level beauty.
also even if rick didn't intend for her to be queer from the start, she was VERY comphet lesbian coded. the way she always thought about jason was very reminiscent of when i was young and trying to convince myself i had a crush on this guy. also jason & piper's memories together were literally FAKED by hera. ppl talk about that when expressing admiration for jason but conveniently forget about it when it comes to piper like really?? and did i forget the daddy issues me & piper both share????
that girl had SEVERE insecurities about being incompetent (again, complicated relationship with femininity.. also among the 7) despite probably being the one who's single-handedly saved them from troubles the most number of times out of all the 7.

The more I read on, the more I am absolutely baffled about how badly everybody treats Nico. I'm not talking about the narrative kicking him over and over again, the boy didn't get a breather in years. But the Seven? They would be so very dead without him and still? Still he's untrustworthy, creepy and we constantly have to point out how unhealthy he looks. Which is somehow proof of him being even creepier? I mean, they debate to let him die? After all he had done to help them all because of one bad decision he made when he was what, 12? And Jason doesn't understand why he would rather keep to himself than open up about his secret. You have given him absolutely no reason to feel safe around you, quite the opposite.
And then Percy gets offended when Nico doesn't go "oh it's all good, don't worry about a thing!" after he tries to say thank you. (I know he's weird around him for other reasons, not the point)
There is no point for me to get all worked up because of a kids book. Alas, here we are.

For the bugs.
(short sweet excerpt from book III under the cut)
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
Then Kaelin abruptly smacked herself on the side of the neck. “Ugh.”
“Bugs?”
Turning her head to squint up at him, Kaelin grumbled, “I thought you didn’t know what bugs were? I had to explain spiders and butterflies to you.”
“I’ve always known what bugs were. I just didn’t know about those different kinds of bugs. They’re all just little flecks that fly around and bite you.”
“Butterflies don’t bite, and spiders don’t fly around.”
“Wow. Thank goodness for that.” Ruyak put his nose to the wind thoughtfully.
“I ought to just stay in the pocket where the bugs can’t find me…” Kaelin groaned and let her arms drape over the outside of her pocket. Given the hot weather, these days she was constantly washing her clothes and experimentally shedding layers, sometimes wearing only her sarafan, which left her arms fair game for the biting flies. “I get awfully sweaty in here.”
Ruyak followed his nose along the rise, examining the foliage carefully. The plant he was looking for preferred sun and didn’t like soggy soil. It wasn’t something he’d find lower in the valley bottom.
“What are you doing?” Kaelin asked.
“Looking for something.”
“What-?”
“Found it.” Ruyak picked a sprig of the pink-flowered herb from the clump he found and handed it to Kaelin. “Here.”
“Oh… thanks?” Kaelin took the offered herb, examining the flower with a bemused pout. “It smells nice. Like… mint, almost, but fruity.”
“It’s sweet balm. Crush it up and rub it on yourself.
“Uh-”
“For the bugs.”
“Oh.” She gave the flower another sniff, tore off some of the leaves and rolled them between her hands, then rubbed the oils on her arms and the back of her neck. The flower itself she hesitated over for a moment, then plucked from the rest of the stem and tucked behind her ear under her headscarf. “How’s that?”
“Good.” Ruyak sniffed the top of her head. “Now you smell prickly.”
Kaelin glowered up at him, but the effect of the little pink flower behind her ear nullified any ire in her glare. “Prickly enough for you to stop sniffing me all the time?”
“Ha! Nope.”
“Ah well,” Kaelin chuckled. “I suppose it’s too much to expect it to repel Ruyaks as well as bugs.”
