The long sleep loosens it's grip as your eyes flutter open. The warmth of sunlight kisses your skin, and a soft breeze combs through your hair, as if welcoming you back to a place you've always belonged.
You find yourself cushioned by the rustling grass around you, serving as a meal for horses in the distance. The chirping of birds and the trill of crickets create a nostalgic symphony from a time you can't quite remember.
You look up to the sky, eyes following the clouds to the outline of mountains that stretch before you. The view of New Hanover welcomes you.
The breath you didn't know you were holding is released, along with all the uncertainty it contained, you remember that you've been here before.
But this time, it feels like you're home.

My husband has officially destroyed the lawn. He soaked the entire front yard in weedkiller. "Faster than waiting for it to compost."
The soil is now destroyed and a barren wasteland. I had planned on composting the yard in order to make it fertile and ready for native wildflowers. It would've been cheap and just a couple years od waiting.
Now?
Gotta remove all the destroyed soil and replace it because this is poison. Nothing will grow in it.
"Make it a box and pot garden."
That's actually more expensive. I need to acquire containers and soil, and something to cover what is now dirt because there are no roots holding anything down. This is a disaster.
He's upset I'm not grateful about him saving me time and work.
I cannot plant anything in the ground. This will take years to replace, and a lot more money.
This man wants to cover the backyard in cement and rocks with just a container garden. The only thing stopping him is lack of money and everyone else informing him he is being very stupid.
Any suggestions for how to deal with the dust bowl disaster of a front yard? It's full sun, zero shade, and likely little to no rain until September. I want wildflowers, native plants, plants that can help dirt recover into soil, attract butterflies and birds, low maintenance (wildflowers self-seed), and possibly a herb tower.

alright you’ve been extremely extremely kind and indulgent to me about my oc and i cannot possibly thank you enough <333333 so MY turn now to ask YOU about YOURS. please tell me about maglor’s distant granddaughter who is also your bbeg?? .w. or about the chatty hobbits i would very VERY much love to hear about both!!!
~ @nelyoslegalteam, reporting from main <3
(long post, sorry for the random people stumbling upon this lol)
so I'm the dm for the chatty hobbits campaign and essentially it's set in a beleriand-adjacent continent, but with a few extra races and stuff. of the founders of the original settlements, the king of elende (the elf kingdom) is Gil-galad's (invented for the campaign) twin brother Finellach/Finwain. originally he was inspired by the fact that gil galad has a ton of names but only uses ereinion/gil, so I just invented a new character and gave him half the names. I headcanon gil galad as maglor's son, so finwain is in universe maglor's son (left at the havens with gil bc his wife divorced him for kinslaying and his kingdom, being next door neighbors with morgoth, is far too dangerous for small children).
Anyways, his descendant Elinyel (also known as aramire or elinnor) is the current queen of Elende! she's an evil fire-themed bard who is extremely feanorian in all the worst ways - her actual kingdom prospered under her reign, but she just does not care about everyone else as long as she's protecting her people. There were some tensions with one of the major kingdoms to the north (conflict over unclaimed territory between the kingdoms and some tariff stuff), so instead of risking the other kingdom starting a war and hurting her people, she just preemptively invaded it and started burned all the border territories to the ground.
her actual coronation was pretty weird- so she's the second child, but her older sister was born in wartime and there's a general belief in elende that children of peacetime make better rulers, so Elinyel was chosen as her family's heir. her grandfather (the crown prince of his generation) died defending Elende in one of the major wars, but his younger brother and two young kids survived. there's a whole feud between their houses because the brother chose to retain the kingship even after the kids were old enough to take the throne. anyways, two generations later Elinyel killed her cousin Arendil (the previous king of Elende) over a dispute about the legitimacy of his house (and what she believed to be a dishonoring of her grandparents' sacrifice) and took the throne.
obviously she has many Issues. arendil also has two surviving kids who are now essentially trying to stop her from murdering all their neighbors in proactive defense of her people.
however, when she first ascended she recruited her friend group as her elite guard/vassals of the kingdom. (aka the other bosses in the storyline). so it escalated to a war between her forces and the children of arendil, which ultimately culminated in her beloved sister being killed by one of arendil's children. this in turn led to her having basically a massive mental breakdown and feeling like she failed to protect her loved ones (exacerbated by some of her other friends being killed in battles she led). a normal person might decide this is was kind of her fault for starting a war and putting her friends in charge of the army. instead she decided she needed to destroy everyone who could ever potentially pose a threat. which is, in her eyes, literally everyone on the continent (except for her kingdom, of course).
so now she is at war with absolutely everyone of all factions! She is also somehow winning by virtue of Song almost on the level of maglor himself, and ten (now six) also incredibly powerful friends. Anyways, she has decided that the best way to wipe out the continent (except her kingdom) and start fresh is to literally find an ancient lost stone that can break the Doors of Night, summon Morgoth himself, and start the Dagorath. obviously this will Not go well for anyone at all if she succeeds, but she is on a full-on rampage and genuinely believes she (plus friends) can protect her kingdom from Morgoth's army while he wipes out everyone else.
Here's some old art of her btw!
And some slightly more recent unfinished art of her and the Evil Friend Group from when they were younger:
and here's (L-R) her cousin who is the 3rd boss, Elinyel, and her sister from before the war!

i think that many people in this fandom should go outside and touch grass for a moment, and try to remember that the drivers irl are not the same as the characters that we use for rpf fics.
"omg but i loved the characterisation of X in Y fic soooo much" that's great... but that characterisation is still not a reflection of who X is irl.
for example. "i can't believe charles said that, why would he say that? it's not who he is :/" girl. maybe that's not who he is in fic, and he probably wouldn't say that in your 21k charlos slowburn fest, but in real life, where he is a real person, he most absolutely can and did in fact say that.
just. it's fine to make the drivers say and do whatever the flying fuck you want in fic, but it's SO important to keep that line between reality and fiction firmly in mind.

It took Royal an hour and a half to find all 20 eggs hidden outside.
Curtis told me the reason Oregon smells Like That in spring is actually because of these trees -- the cottonwoods. I can't believe I never knew that! On a beautifully mild, sunny spring day, the air fills with a honeysuckle smell, and it's heaven.

Honestly seeing all the posts unironically celebrating a child possibly killing his father, is deeply disturbing.
Instead of focusing on how Adrien possibly learning Monarch’s identity in the end and then realise that, not only he was fighting his own father all along, but actually almost killed him (or possibly damaged him for life) and the trauma his character could go through because of that, these out-of-touch people that treat Gabriel like he’s a real person, are celebrating by saying stuff like: “Adrien deserves to kill his father” or “we deserve to see Gabriel die”.
It’s ghoulish and cruel (and makes them just as bad as Gabriel, if not worse, since he’s fictional, therefore his actions are not his own, and they are real people).
The dynamic Adrien and Gabriel have, always reminded me of Vader and Luke. Both are father and son, a villain and a hero, but when in one fandom Luke and Vader’s story is celebrated for it’s lesson in compassion, in the MLB fandom there is no such empathy.
All you get is a bunch of people (mostly adults) that can’t distinguish fiction from reality (take Gabriel’s action personally), should probably step back from this kids show (especially if it causes them so many destructive emotions) and that warps even the tiniest thing Gabriel does into “abuse” (ex: Adrien having a balanced and healthy alimentation = “he’s starving him!”).
[What he does as Hawkmonth doesn’t count because he doesn’t know CN is Adrien. Also there are multiple instances where Gabriel gives up his powers when his son is caught in the crossfire (ex: Stlyle Queen), showing he does love Adrien and wants him to be safe, even if it means letting Emilie go (returning to his villainous ways is part of his descent into madness, has nothing to do with his love for Adrien).
And episodes like “Chat Blanc” and “Ephemeral” are out, not only because they are a “what if”, making them irrelevant, but because a lot of the cast acts completely out of character, including Gabriel (but let’s be fair this happens constantly in the show)]
Yes, Gabriel changed and became emotionally distant after Emilie “disappeared” and that constitutes a type of abuse (I’m not condoning his actions), but he’s not the horrible father parts of the fandom want him to be (Audrey is so much worse).
What we are now seeing in season 5 is not the real Gabriel, it’s him loosing his mind and being corrupted by power: "You used to do this for the love for Emilie, now you just do it for madness" (he’s clearly not the man he was in season 1 nor before the events of the show).
He was never “Monarch”, he became like that with time. It’s called character development (something that rarely happens in this show, so I’m not surprised if some people are taken aback by it).
Don’t get me wrong, I get it, some people don’t like Gabriel and it’s fair. I’m the first to criticise and make fun of the guy, even if I like his character (I wanted to reach into the screen and smack him after “Evolution”). But the vitriol aimed at this fictional character, who’s been written (even if badly) as a “desperate man fallen from grace and corrupted with power” (again, like Anakin), is really exaggerated, like most hatred other characters recieve (even Ozai, who’s so much worse than Gabriel, never recieved so much hatred).
Also the actual hate and abuse these real people throw to other human beings for not agreeing with them about a fictional character is really heinous, and I know I’ll probably get a couple of these lunatics’s “opinions” in the replies. To them: look at what you’re doing with your life and rethink it. Stop. Get help.
These reactions really make me wonder if MLB is the first and only show these people have ever seen. There are way more worse characters out there, that did way worst (ex: Gendo Ikari, Shou Tucker, Ozai, Palpatine, just to name a few).
In the end Gabriel is not real, what he did never happened and the show clearly makes him out to be in the wrong (he’s the villain), so no child watching the show will ever look up to him (unlike other characters who’s bad actions are framed to be “right”).
I think the people that hate Gabriel to such a caustic degree need some professional help because clearly something else is going on in their life and I wish them a healthy recovery.
-
And if people wonder why I like Gabriel’s character, it’s because he, alongside Nathalie, are the only characters with actual development in this series. Therefore they’re the most interesting and compelling.
Get a random episode from each season, everyone is the exact same except them. This is why, objectively, they’re the best the show has to offer (despite the occasional character assassinations... looking at you “Chat Blanc”, you absolute trainwreck).
