what is a person to do when the only thing in their head is hadestown? write fic apparently
also that first paragraph is only one sentence, and it's not even technically a run on. i fucking love commas :)

In times like these, Remus liked to imagine he was anywhere but here, face down on the floor of his shitty flat surrounded by empty bottles of liquor, rummaging around under his threadbare couch for the one thing that could still send him down the rabbit hole of tainted memories, one after another until he was praying to gods he didn’t believe in that he had never looked and just let sleeping dogs lie, because how was he supposed to live in a world without Sirius, without his Eurydice, his Patroclus, his Hyacinthus; how was he supposed to live in a world where he didn’t even have the privilege of myth after his whole life had fallen apart?
He looked back.

I was reading discourse on achilles yesterday and I'm still thinking about some people calling him a r*pist and others saying that other books they've read that are from a woman's perspective completely shifted the perception they have of TSOA's Achilles. And to me that makes little to no sense.
Here's what I come from: Achilles is a character from the Illiad, and the poem itself is pretty much fanfiction. I mean, the person and warrior that Achilles is based on probably existed, and it might have been called Achilles even, but i think we all agree that the rest is dubious.
Since the illiad is like the OG story, people tend to look at it as if it's canon and we'll go with that logic. You have the canon work and poets go off on their own versions of these characters writing tragedies, more epics, thesis, all sorts of stuff, and it goes on for centuries until we reach The song of Achilles and Percy Jackson and all the other 100s retellings coming out which are fanfiction of fanfiction.
And you're letting one fanfiction distort another fanfiction? It's bonkers to me because as someone who has to read the classics and grew up on fanfiction, I don't see that happening elsewhere. Between academics, if we're discussing a myth, we mention the different versions, and we can choose one to go on from, sure. But even so, I never saw someone sound so affected by different perspectives on the same character in class.
And if we're talking on the world of street fanfiction, I most definitely don't find people going "Oh this fanfiction of hermione betraying the order and marrying voldmort changed my perspective of Harry Potter's hermione" you know? -- if that sounds like a stupid example, it's because it is. It's just to show that my whole point is that it's insane to me to let a book ruin another book when the authors are creating different versions of the same characters, which basically turns them into different characters with the same names. Especially since you know, it's all made up. And this isn't real criticism to the people forming their opinions or the authors, respect to all of them.
But it’s a little maddening watching people roll into arguments to discuss what piece of fiction is more real and relevant when they're all in the same level of glorified AO3 works.
I hope this makes sense to someone else

Female authors when their girlboss, female rage, pussy power retelling of Greek Myth gets called out for ignoring the fact that Odysseus very much did not fucking consent to Circe and Calypso’s advances and that ignoring male victims of harassment and SA is actually not at all feminist

Suspend Your Disbelief. Seriously.
One thing I've taught myself when it comes to interpreting literature, no matter what it is or where it comes from, is when something is left unsaid, I assume the best-case scenario.
An example: Greek Mythology.
Greek Mythology is notorious for having very...disturbing things happen. And yeah, it happens to even your favorites.
But something that ticks me off (on this website in particular) is exaggerating a myth.
I think Apollo is a very good example of this. I have heard "Apollo raped [insert name here]!" so many times, but you know what? They never back it up with actual sources! Just heresy!
Daphne? He never even touched her. Chased her? Yes, but people also tend to disregard Eros's own involvement in that matter. (i made a post about it and other things)
Castalia? Same as Daphne. also was a very late addition by the Romans and is not Greek
Cassandra? This is literally a case of a woman being given autonomy! If Apollo was literally any other god, she would have been raped - but he didn't! Curse her? Yes and there's a lot more to unpack here but that's another post but he never assaulted her! "But she was coerced-" NO SHE WAS NOT. AS A MATTER OF FACT SHE LOVED HIM. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT CASSANDRA LOVED APOLLO. PROOF IN THE TROJAN WOMEN:
Farewell, ye garlands of that god most dear to me! farewell, ye mystic symbols! I here resign your feasts, my joy in days gone by. Go, I tear ye from my body, that, while yet mine honour is intact, I may give them to the rushing winds to waft to thee, my prince of prophecy
also this is after the curse situation. so. they have NUANCES! and i like that. euripides be giving us NUANCES and i SALUTE him GIVE ME THE NUANCES PLEASE
I could go on and on. But one myth is a very good example of this "assume the best happened" vs "assume the worst happened" mindset.
Bolina. She was a mortal who Apollo fell in love with, but she threw herself off a cliff. Apollo turned her immortal to save her life, and that's the end of the story.
Yet I have heard people use Bolina's myth as "proof" that Apollo's a rapist.
First of all, I have a whole post basically debunking this notion, but also, where does it say. at any point. that Apollo raped Bolina?
Tumblr media
(screenshot from Theoi.com)
Where.
That's right. Nowhere.
Sure, I guess you could assume it was done after Apollo turned Bolina immortal, but honestly, in my opinion, that's just grasping at straws. That's looking for something to complain about.
What I've learned is to assume the best happens. And guess what? That makes me enjoy mythology more! Suspend your disbelief! Not that difficult! Just because these myths are from ancient times doesn't mean terrible things happened all the time!
And I say this as an enjoyer of Mythology. This is not my religion, or my culture, but I am an avid enjoyer (particularly of Apollo's myths, hence why I used him as an example) and I do get irritated when these myths are twisted around in someone's quest to "prove" that a certain god usually Apollo is The Worst.
and it's kinda funny how people are determined to make Apollo this terrible, misogynistic asshole when...he's not. Then turn around and call the goddesses feminist girlbosses when they have also done fuck-up shit to other women.
Suspend the disbelief. You'll be happier.

I feel so bad for Ares cuz there's Zeus who clearly loves and favors his children (Apollo, Athena, Artemis, among others) but doesn't give a shit about Ares. Like in the Iliad when Ares went to him for comfort, all he got was a lecture. Worse than a lecture. Didn't he basically tell him he hated him?

Ok so what the fuck is c.a cupid? Is she a demi goddess or a straight up goddess? She calls others mortals in one of the books which seems to make it clear she doesn’t also consider herself mortal and then theres the whole her age being described with cryptic shit like “as old as teenage love” and there literally being an old statue of her in a museum, the thing is demigods apparently are still basically mortal?? They age and die. Also when shes home for spring break she’s shown living with her father on mount Olympus aka the fucking place im pretty sure only full gods can go to-
Has c.a cupid been holding out on us this entire time- is this bitch a full on goddess??? Faybelle seems to think shes a demigoddess so cupid must have been spreading some total bullshit around ever after high💀
God shes such a fucking crazy dirty liar i want to kiss her so bad-

Does Vincent's drawing of Arachne and sculpture have symbolism that connects to him? 🤔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos taken from @slasherlouvre they were too good not to use <3
Sorry if this is a bit nonsensical and messy, I repeat myself a lot here.
In the myth, Arachne was a women that was extremely talented as a weaver (artist) making gorgeous tapestries that could compete with the talent of the goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom, warfare but also handicraft (especially weaving.)
Arachne became a great weaver, boasted that her skill was greater than Athena's, and refused to acknowledge that her skill came, at least in part, from the goddess. Athena took offense and set up a contest between them.
- Ovid's Metamorphosis
Power given to someone by a God, where have we heard about that before?
“Ma would be proud, yeah, she'd be real proud. She always said your talent would make up for what God took away from you.”
- House of Wax 2005
A payback against God.
Destruction of the human body.
Creation in his (Vincent's) image.
God took his face, so talent was all he had.
So he'll take what is God's.
Maybe Vincent felt that he and Arachne were similar. Their image was taken away by a God. Vincent could even have felt like he was given a pass because all his hardships.
He is deserving of all the talent because it's his and only his. Why should he thank Him?
The end of Arachne is violent one as well. She hung herself after the Goddess tore her pristine work, attacked her and embarrassed her in front of everyone.
Vincent's death wasn't the same as Arachne but I remember someone writing that Vincent going after Nick and Carly after Bo's death was like a sort of "suicide" sentence of sorts. He was so deep into his grief that he could care less if he made it out alive, his twin was dead and he was going to die with him. (Please, if it was one of my mutuals or someone else let me know so I can tag you and credit you!!!)
After Arachne's suicide, Athena made her a spider (her form was taken) and Vincent's face was taken by God in his conception (being born attached to his brother, conjoined twins.)
Tumblr media
Spiders are apex predators in the bug world, and are seen as the artists of the natural world due to the beauty and intricacy of their webs.
They're also solitary animals that hide and wait in the shadows before striking their victims. 👀
Tumblr media
Or he just likes the imagery and I am overthinking everything. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Moon God Lust!
Tumblr media
(TW—Lore includes S.A! This was heavily inspired by the story of Medusa!)
It is said every total solar eclipse, is the sign of a new born God.
Lust was a loyal follower of the Lunar entity, the moon. He did everything as inscription told him to, worshipped every night and made offerings before rest.
And in return, he was rewarded for his loyalty. He'd always been blessed with pleasant dreams, finding gifts on his doorstep, to have the best harvest. The moon favoured him as the head, the most devoted worshipper.
Lust, had other traits besides his undying loyalty. He seemed keen on romance, he was beautiful, he sparked jealously in the eyes of others.
But Dispite this, he swore never to tie himself down. He'd always communicate with partners he did not seek marriage or strong bonds, and his only true commitment with lay within the celestial being.
One day, the jealousy of one went too far. A fellow moon worshiper, a bigger and stronger person than him, a woman faster than him, was blinded by her jealousy. Clearly, she should've been honoured as most devoted in her eyes, she worked twice as hard as that skeleton!
The horrid woman used her physical advantages over him one day, forcing herself apon him during worship, staining the sacred grounds with her violence.
She was sure the moon would punish Lust for it. She'd claim she were the victim, and she'd be the favourite. Not considering the sheer consequences this would have on Lust, how broken he felt for it happening.
But instead, the entity had watched, disappointed in her. The moon began to rise at day, confusion spread within the common folk. As the moon came to a halt, right in front of the sun. Making only a ring of light appear in the sky.
Lust laid crying in the place of worship, as he heard a whisper.
Child, loyal to me. I burden you not with your mortality any longer. Came the voice of the moon, whispy and feminine in nature.
And Lust was picked up from the ground, tears crystallize into delicate thread that decorated the robe he now adorned, as his skeleton shifted to a purple, and was gifted a mark of the moon.
As the first, total solar eclipse happened. Was born a God, Lunarst, the personification of the moon.
And, the woman? Oh, she was dealt with. As the moon did not let her rest from that day forward. Owls and raccoons and bears sent after her at night, water tainted if she were to touch it, and her injuries no longer healed.
It's said now, Lunarst is part of the three in the celestial court. Along with the God of Planet, and Sun. To this day, even as a godly being, he grieves over what happened. Lives as a sign of survival, and inspires hope into his own worshippers.
