Today Marcus as...
Series 6 Post 21: He is very often identified among the twelve Olympians as the god of war in a general sense, but this is an inaccuracy because in reality Ares is the god only of the more violent aspects of war and of the struggle understood as bloodlust.
🌸 The word "Ares" until the classical era was also used as an adjective, meaning enraged or warlike, for example we recall the forms Zeus Areios, Athena Areia, or even Aphrodite Areia. Some inscriptions dating back to the Mycenaean era report Enyalios, a name that survived into the classical era as an epithet of Ares.
🌸 Ares was the son of the king of the gods, Zeus, and the queen of the gods, Hera. His sisters were Hebe and Ilitia. According to Homer and Quintus Smyrnaeus, Ares had a twin sister: Eris. According to another myth, reported by Ovid and the First Vatican Mythographer, Eris and Ares were conceived by Hera simply by touching a lotus flower, without the goddess lying with Zeus.
🌸 Ares had a quadriga pulled by four immortal horses with fiery breath named: Ardente, Flaming, Strepito, Horror. Of all the gods he was distinguished by his gleaming bronze armor and in battle he habitually wielded a spear and shield. His sacred birds were the barn owl, the woodpecker, the eagle owl and, especially in southern Greece, the vulture. Is often represented on stone with the red color, red like blood, symbol of the ferocious acts that are carried out in war.
🌸From his fiery relationship with Aphrodite were born two sons, Deimos and Phobos, who personified the spirits of terror and fear. Usually Ares went to war accompanied by Cidoimo (the demon of the noise of battle), the Makhai (spirits of battle), the Hysminai (spirits of murder), Polemos (a minor war spirit) and his daughter of Polemos Alalà, personification of the war cry of the Greeks and whose name Ares decided to use as his own war cry. Even the god Eros was and is considered the son of Ares and Aphrodite.

Day 4 of @paganpoundshop post prompts and it's my favourite deity. This has changed over my lifetime but is currently hecate. I've been leaning more toward the Greek pantheon in my practice and they're fascinating to research. The idea of epithets is a wonderful way to incorporate them into every day life and witchcraft. Being the protector of dogs is one of my favourites! (Kudos to anyone who spots this is not a photo of a statue of Hecate but is actually suggested to be Diana. I'm intrigued by the theory that Hecate could be one of Artemis' epithets.) #deity #witch #witchcraft #greekpantheon #hellenic #artemis #diana #hecate #roman #history #mythology https://www.instagram.com/p/CjXZbgftYNd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Ares”
Ares isn’t just physical war, he’s all wars, even the ones inside our head. He’s strength and the courage to fight another day even when it feels like you’ve been defeated, he’s the one pulling you back on your feet, brushing you off and helping you back into the fight. Ares isn’t about bottled up emotions either, he understands mortal pain, anger, and sadness, he understands the human condition and miasma more than anyone. He wants us to be able to feel and express these emotions in healthy productive ways. He’ll never let you fight these battles alone either, he’ll be your sword, your shield, your shining torch through the darkness. Above all he’ll be your number one supporter because he knows one of the toughest wars are the ones inside our heads and are wars only we can fight, no army, and that’s pretty badass. That alone, paints you a strong warrior in his eyes and he won’t let you forget it. 🖤

My ladies with their new candles, symbols for me to represent them, as well as their offerings and each element I correspond them with in from of their offerings: - Hesta: tea light candle with chamomile. - Hekate with Moon Water. - Asteria with Dragon Blood Incense. - Athena with Selenite. So fire, water, air and earth. Their candles are strong and present, the fact they did not flicker when I did this for them makes me smile. #witch #witchesofinstagram🔮🌙 #witchdeity #deities #greekdeity #greekpantheon #hestia #hécate #asteria #athena #candles #deityofferings #elements https://www.instagram.com/p/CRv742_nXh4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today Darius as...
Series 6 Post 13:  God of love, sex, passion, desire, procreation, lust, sexual attraction and physical desire. His Roman counterpart was Cupid ("desire"). In the earliest account, he is a primordial god, while in later accounts he is described as one of the children of Aphrodite and Ares and, with some of his siblings, was one of the Erotes, a group of winged love gods.
🌸 The Greek ἔρως, meaning "desire", comes from ἔραμαι "to desire, to love". 🌸 Eros is represented as the son of Aphrodite, whose mischievous interventions in the affairs of gods and mortals cause bonds of love to form, often illicitly. Ultimately, in the later satirical poets, he is represented as a blindfolded child, the precursor to the chubby Renaissance Cupid, whereas in early Greek poetry and art, Eros was depicted as a young adult male who embodies sexual power, and a profound artist. 🌸 He was the son of the deities Aphrodite and Ares: it is the Eros of these later myths who is one of the erotes. Eros was depicted as often carrying a lyre or bow and arrow. He was also depicted accompanied by dolphins, flutes, roosters, roses, and torches. 🌸 According to Porphyrius, Themis, the goddess of justice, played a role in Eros growing up. His mother Aphrodite once complained to Themis that Eros did not grow and remained a perpetual child, so Themis advised her to give him a brother. Aphrodite then gave birth to Anteros (meaning "counter-love"), and whenever he was near him, Eros grew. But if Anteros was away, Eros shrank back to his previous, smaller size.

"𝕻𝖘𝖞𝖈𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖆𝖘 𝖓𝖔𝖜 𝖘𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖘𝖋𝖎𝖊𝖉 𝖙𝖍𝖆𝖙 𝖍𝖊𝖗 𝖉𝖊𝖘𝖙𝖗𝖚𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓 𝖜𝖆𝖘 𝖆𝖙 𝖍𝖆𝖓𝖉, 𝖇𝖊𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖔𝖇𝖑𝖎𝖌𝖊𝖉 𝖙𝖔 𝖌𝖔 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖍 𝖍𝖊𝖗 𝖔𝖜𝖓 𝖋𝖊𝖊𝖙 𝖉𝖎𝖗𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖑𝖞 𝖉𝖔𝖜𝖓 𝖙𝖔 𝕰𝖗𝖊𝖇𝖚𝖘." - Thomas Bulfinch 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 In a month dedicated to the psyche, & perhaps as a final fond glance back to 'Circe' (link to my review in bio), it seemed wrong to ignore the Greek/Roman character from whom the word derives. In modern terms, we define 'psyche' as: "The mind, soul, or spirit, as opposed to the body." It follows (or proceeds, but 🙄 language) that Psykhe (Roman: Psyche) was the goddess of the soul, associated with the butterfly. Born mortal, Psykhe grows to possess beauty so great that Aphrodite (Roman: Venus, goddess of love) herself sends Eros (R: Cupid, god of love) to stop Psykhe's admirers mortal worship. Commanded to marry Psykhe off to a most physically vile man (you didn't think the Ancient god[esse]s were just & mature, did you?), on seeing her Eros rebels & takes her as his own. Living in his secret palace, she is forbidden from looking upon his face, never knowing his identity. Jealous, her sisters trick her - she looks & is banished for it. Forlorn & alone, Psykhe scours the globe for her love, finding Aphrodite instead. The goddess takes charge of her, testing her with a sleu of seeming impossibilities, climaxing in a trip to the Underworld. With the secret help of Eros, Psykhe satisfactorily completes Aphrodite's tasks, is reunited with Eros & invited into the ranks of the pantheon. Following the birth of their daughter Hedone, goddess of pleasure, they lived happily ever after (I have some more reading to do before I can confirm this, but I actually kinda doubt they do). 📸: 'Psyche Opening the Golden Box', John William Waterhouse, 1904.
