Probably my favorite book of the year so far! If you haven't picked this one up yet, I highly encourage you to do so, it's beautiful! ☆ ☆ ☆ #bookstagram #books #read #reading #bookish #booksofinstagram #booknerd #bookporn #bookshelf #bibliophile #igreads #igbooks #instaread #instabook #origami #stars #origamistars #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #literature #literary
I am so so grateful to Max Porter for writing his beautiful book “Grief is the thing with feathers” - I read it in a rush, and would recommend to anyone grieving: wait a month, for the pain to feel slightly less like a weight pressing at your temples, and then set aside two hours or so to gobble this up.
This is an extract that especially resonated with me:
“Oil, when you look closer mud, when you look closer sand, when you sip it, silt becoming silk.
I missed her so much that I wanted to build a hundred-foot memorial to her with my bare hands. I wanted to see her sitting in a vast stone chair in Hyde Park, enjoying her view. Everybody passing could comprehend how much I miss her. How physical my missing is. I miss her so much it is a vast golden prince, a concert hall, a thousand trees, a lake, nine thousand buses, a million cars, twenty million birds and more. The whole city is my missing her.
*Eugh, said Crow, you sound like a fridge magnet*.”
If you have ever seen the movie #Babadook and understood it's meaning you will surely enjoy this book. That's the only way I can discribe this dark and deeply metaphorical piece of literature. #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter 📚 #bookstagram #book
Regram from @faberbooks Cillian Murphy's copy of Max Porter's incredible 'Grief is the Thing with Feathers' which it seems is being brought to the stage...Time to excitedly investigate! #generallygothic #gothic #griefisthethingwithfeathers #maxporter #cillianmurphy #death #grief #poetry #literature #play #theatre #bookadaptation #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bookstagram
I remember being scared that something must, surely, go wrong, if we were this happy, her and me, in the early days, when our love was settling into the shape of our lives like cake mixture reaching the corners of the tin as it swells and bakes. #griefisthethingwithfeathers #bookstagram
My absolute favorite book of the year so far! A stunning, completely unique read that you should totally check out! Max Porter's first outing as a novelist is a part play - part novella, written in prose-poetry form. It's also an in-depth treatise on loss, an essay on grief and bereavement and makes you realize how 'moving on' is the phoniest thing the self-styled psychologists told you... For it is a journey of a lifetime. Sometimes when love is felt deep, you never truly move on; you just try look for it in places, things, books and wanderings, perhaps it is one's way of trying to feel the person. After he loses his wife and the kids lose their mother... The protagonist dad (who is a Ted Hughes scholar) and two boys now have to learn to deal with emptiness. In comes a strange creature to help them - the crow. This polyphonic book weaves an extended monologue on how each one is dealing with the loss...Including the crow. Language and form are Porter's major contribution to the genre of literary fiction here. You just know how that he is home with the language. The choice of words make it clear. He uses subtle humour, not sentimentality in his exploration of shock and loss. Comparisons are odious. But this work makes you realise the chasm between contemporary / new Indian writing in English fiction (that rarely offers anything new by the way of idea, plot, language and form) and the work happening outside. For one it is going to keep me away from bad writing for a long time (I can now recognise it from miles away even if it a bestseller... The horror!) Pick this up. It is for all those who have ever loved truly. Have felt it like an ache till pain gives way to memories and makes you carry the person in your heart which feels strangely heavy yet empty sometimes. As if that lone man or woman sits in the corner of your head and talks to you. Bugs you. "I am in here!" What an astounding read! This. Exemplary work. Will stand the test of time. This one demands patient reading. Re-reading. ❤️ #love #lovelovelove #DelhiEyes #GriefIsTheThingWithFeathers #review #FaberAndFaber #FaberBooks #MaxPorter #Books #Bookstagram #Booklover #sunday #delhiblogger #weekend #crow #BrunchBookChallenge #Book2 #AmReading #Reading #ILoveBooks #DelhiSpring #Bookworm #BookBlogger #India
