I Miss Guidebooks
So I started playing the Witcher 3 and I remember my parents had two guidebooks for the game: a collector's edition that they kept sealed and one they actually used. It made me want to get the guidebook because man, I love guidebooks. Guidebooks were so fucking awesome to have. I had a guidebook for Oblivion and Skyrim and even found one for Fable 3.
Today, I went searching for the Witcher 3 guidebook at local game stores to no avail. I had to get on ebay. Then I realized: guidebooks aren't really made anymore.
They used to be so fucking cool. It was so awesome to be able to scour a book to look for information that I needed in a game. I felt like a scholar uncovering hidden secrets or an alchemist looking inside a tome for where to find all these mysterious herbs. There was just something so nice and fulfilling about flipping through a physical medium to find something for a digital medium.
Now, we just have the internet, but it's not as fun nor fulfilling. Sometimes it takes me a while to find what I'm looking for and about three reddit threads until I find what I want and it just doesn't feel as nice.
I am honestly truly sad the era of guidebooks is gone because I used to love them. Having a book companion to a game was honestly just so frickin awesome. We lost something when guidebooks stopped being made. And I know there are online guides and such, but I'm talking about literal hard copies. To have a tome of knowledge about a game.
I miss that time.

Did you know? In the English version of "Skylanders Trap Team: Master Eon's Official Guide," on page 162, there's an error where instead of giving a description for 'Chapter 16: The Golden Desert', it actually re-uses the description for 'Chapter 12: Time Town.' The page also features the grammatical error in using "Mags's," rather than "Mags'."

Travel & Tourism Week - Do the stories Matter?
This is National Travel and Tourism Week. Most of us love to go places, attend events, dine out, and enjoy a get away, but how does this resonate? Is it important to write the reviews, share your stories, or have writers tell what they see and do? Do tourists pay attention? Can destinations benefit by bringing writers to their area? Is it worth the expense? According to my sources, the answer is…

Guidebooks Confusion
Straight on or turning?
Looking for route indicators,
And wondering at the vague directions,
So we walk and get lost again.
It's somewhere nice to see,
But not where we're meant to be.
That's the helpful guidebook,
A ton of instructions here, just look,
But further on they peter out,
Assuming occasional works.
That only goes when the path is simple,
Not intersecting with others,
Or winding around to confuse you.
But hey the guidebook must be right,
It's written by professionals after all.
Professionals who forgot to write for novices.
We'll figure it out sometime.
Sometime soon I hope.
Cause this isn't the right place.

Hey did you guys know that in rock climbing if you're the first person to climb a route, you get to name it? And that there are no exceptions or caveats to this rule?

pssst. if 911 is your first exposure to mental health/mental health crises in general (like if this is your first exposure to DID - dissociative identity disorder), highly recommending reading up on them from scientific, properly cited sources BEFORE forming an opinion

Blue Exorcist Character Guidebook 2: Mephisto
Info on Mephisto from the new guidebook! Each character has a profile followed by relevant questions from fans, and then there's an interview section later where Kazue Katoh gives commentary on each major character and each manga arc. I have more guidebook than time, so I'm skipping the parts that are just like...summarizing who he is and stuff. So this will mostly be fan questions and Katoh's commentary
Biographical info
Gender: Male Age: (°w°) Rank/Titles: Director of True Cross Academy and head of the exorcism cram school, Honorary Knight for the Knights of the True Cross, King of Time Anniversary [T/N Katoh gives demons these in lieu of a birthday]: August 28 Blood type: ( ʹ - ʼ ) Height: 195 cm (184 cm without the "horn") Weight: 74 kg Skills and interests: movies, manga, anime, games, music, toys, miscellaneous subcultures
Fan Q&A
How do members of the Knights of the True Cross usually find out that Mephisto is a demon king?
I think some people might find out from books, the internet, etc even before they become exorcists. They do publish demon field guides that you can find at regular libraries, and Mephisto seems like the type to mention it in online interviews. Rin was the only one who didn't know.
How long has he had his current body?
About 200 years.
Which media from Assiah has had the greatest impact on him?
I imagine he would have been shocked the first time he saw a cinematograph.
Mephisto really likes all sorts of entertainment; has he ever tried making something himself?
Demons in general (not just Mephisto) tend to be bad at creative pursuits, though there are exceptions. Mephisto has a certain respect for human creativity.
Why is he so fond of Beelzebub?
Beelzebub just kind of struck a chord with him. Meanwhile, Beelzebub also likes being spoiled by Mephisto.
Which other demon kings get along with Mephisto the best?
In order: 1. Beelzebub 2. Amaimon 3. Egyn 4. Astaroth 5. Iblis 6. Lucifer [T/N it took me like an entire minute to work out that Azazel is the one missing from this list. Presumably because he's a rock]
Has Mephisto ever altered the past?
He sure does say a lot of things that imply that! [T/N: Katoh. Katoh. Katoh.]
How rich is Mephisto exactly?
He's actually one of the world's top businessmen and investors. His total assets are probably over one trillion yen [T/N: Jesus f*ck][T/N: that's about US$6.7 billion]
Author interview
Mephisto is a character who can solve just about anything; does that make him hard to write? Honestly, he's super easy to deploy. Mephisto has the plot in the palm of his hand and can fix stuff behind the scenes; he's the one pulling the strings. For adaptations and spinoffs, I just say "if you need to fill in a plot hole, make it Mephisto's fault" (laughs). But I do think it's dangerous to overdo it.
He even took on a sort of narrator role in chapter 44, didn't he? Around Volume 10, I was trying to treat each chapter like its own self-contained oneshot. Mephisto didn't even feel out of place as an omniscient narrator for one chapter, and for me that really drove home what a convenient character he is. Though I'm always wondering when and how to show Mephisto's own serious motives and inner thoughts, since he does fall into that eternal comic narrator role.
He can suddenly turn terrifying just when you were thinking he was comical. Hidden depths. Fundamentally he's on the humans' side, and he's often in charge of comic relief, but I do want to show his demonic side too. Same with the familiars; I want to portray the demons as something humans are afraid of.

Review: Three, Two, One: Let’s Jam! The Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide to the Original Cowboy Bebop
Tumblr media
Did Yoko Kanno develop the music for Cowboy Bebop before or after seeing the episodes animated? Did discussions during late-night drinking sessions between Shinichiro Watanabe and his voice actors somehow make their way into the series? Speaking of the seiyuu, were they given the freedom to riff in the roles, like improvised jazz? Three, Two One: Let’s Jam: The Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide to the Original Cowboy Bebop, Satoru Stevenson’s new book that was eight years in the making, answers these questions and far, far many, delving so deep into the classic series that you may never find your way out. And if you’re a fan of Cowboy Bebop, you won’t want to. Stevenson has written an intricately researched and highly readable guide, the one companion book that every Bebop otaku must own.

The Servamp Complete Guidebook
Tumblr media
I looked over the guidebook and OMG, it has about 16 pages of questions that sensei has answered!
There are so many! It will take a long time if I were to translate the questions and answers.
Another feature of the guidebook is the timeline, so if you want to look into specific events, it's very useful because the volume and chapter numbers are listed for them!
The character profiles have extra information such as the last part which says "Things I want to try someday".
In Mahiru's case, he wants to travel abroad.
What I noticed for some character profiles, particularly the non-Japanese ones is that they don't have their country of origin listed like in the first guidebook.
Tumblr media
Some of the parameters have changed. The ones that are same like in the first guidebook are physical strength, tactics, cooperativeness and mental state. in the first guidebook, the characters had a parameter for their appearance but now they have agility.
The last parameter for each character is basically a personal trait.
I'd say that "strong suit" can be an appropriate term.
For example, Mahiru has a 10 out of 10 regarding "trust in his partner". in the first guidebook he had ""careness".
So yeah, the guidebook provides plenty of lore. I'm grateful for Tanaka-sensei for making such an awesome guidebook for the fans!
