I really like your comic, I think the story and the characters are really good. What inspired you to create this comic?
Thank you so much! ^u^ I don't get many ask messages so thank you for sending one, I really appreciate it!
What inspired me to create Heroes of Thantopolis? I've always wanted to make a long-form narrative webcomic since I discovered Gunnerkrigg Court in 2008.
I wrote the story of HoT in 2011. At the time, there were whispers of a new Avatar the Last Airbender mini-series (which would premier as Legend of Korra in Spring of 2012 and subsequently get 3 more seasons). We also had recently gotten plot-heavy episodes of Adventure Time that made me intensely curious about the world and lore. I was inspired, and wanted to write a cartoon that combined the pacing of 11-minute episodes with an overarching narrative that would be contained within a short "season." Since I'm not an animator, I then decided to make this story into a webcomic.
Looking back, I'm clearly not the only one who wanted to see something like that, as actual animators and cartoon creators went on to gift us with shows like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Amphibia, The Owl House, Rise of the TMNT - shows that, if you are a fan of, I think you'll like my comic too.
I think you can clearly see the influence of cartoon-style writing on HoT via the structure of the chapters. Each one is self-contained, with a clear beginning, middle and end that, while progressing the larger narrative, is also something you can read on its own. That tends to make them longer than the average webcomic's chapters.
There's more to the story of HoT's creation, and if you're curious, I have a digital zine about it that you can buy for $2 from the Hiveworks online shop.

Guess reading isn't for everyone, like I have a friend who claims that after reading a page he retains zero information on it.
I'm similar, but not quite that extreme. I think it might be related to ADHD.
I've talked about it before, but when I was a kid, I had multiple teachers try to pin it on me and my Mom refused to believe them. As I've grown older, I've begun to realize maybe those teachers were right. What my mom protested was the "classic interpretation" of ADD, which was for kids that were uncontrollably loud, and fidgety, and impulsive. I was never those things. But since then, understanding of ADHD has grown to include the type of person I am.
As I'm reading, sometimes what I'm imagining in my head will cause my mind to wander. My eyes will keep scanning the page on autopilot but my brain will have fully checked out in to doing something else.
Then comes the realization of "wait, I haven't been paying attention to what I'm reading at all" and having to backtrack to the last thing I remember, which in itself isn't easy because my focus drifted in and out. So I remember bits and pieces of things and I have to try and figure out the source of what caused my mind to wander.
The more I became aware of that happening, the harder it's been to read, because now it's like I'm paranoid about it happening. And it wasn't easy to get me to read before anyway!
Reading comic books helps, I think. I mentioned before, but a couple years ago, I managed to read all the way through the original Dragon Ball -- 16 volumes! Sure, it took me more than a year, but each volume is over a hundred pages.
Having images to go along with the dialog helps prevent my mind from wandering, I guess. Instead of my imagination running away with itself and my brain tuning out to the actual words, I stay focused knowing exactly what I'm looking at.
But even then, I don't read tons of comics. I'm like five or six issues behind on IDW Sonic right now, maybe more, and really, that's kind of the only thing on my active reading list outside of webcomics, and the amount of webcomics I read has been slowly dwindling as more and more end or succumb to hiatus.
Like, if you want to know my active reading list for webcomics, it's:
Gunnerkrigg Court, which is very clearly closing in on an ending sometime in the next year or two.
Flipside, which for the last 2-3 years has been SO EXTREMELY SLOW that I've nearly given up on it, but sunk cost fallacy has kept me checking it. At least things finally seem to be happening again lately.
Barbarous, which if I'm being honest has completely lost me in the last couple chapters as character development leapfrogged my understanding of these characters and now I feel like I don't know what's going on anymore.
Prequel, which has fallen in to the Homestuck trap of short bursts of activity punctuated by long, long, long long long long periods of preparing for playable games or videos or whatever, meaning months or sometimes even years between posts, something I'm sure is very stimulating for the creator but not so much for me as a reader.
Awkward Zombie, which thankfully doesn't have plotlines or anything long-term, so it's low commitment and a breezy read.
Three Panel Soul, which like Awkward Zombie is basically two friends making new comics just because they feel like it.
Oglaf (NSFW), which is consistently just very funny.
Irritability/Maze of Death, which is something I've been reading since I was in high school. Author has a very strange sense of humor that can be hit-or-miss but it shaped me a lot when I was a teenager. I wish he'd update the site, though, it's basically impossible to properly read the archives anymore.
Dolmistaska, which I only just started reading less than a year ago and fell deeply in love with. Nothing but good things to say about this.
And then there's two comics I was working my way through the archives of and haven't caught up with yet:
Rock Cocks (NSFW), I don't specifically remember how or why I started reading this, but I've read close to 500 pages of it so far. It's about a exhibitionist rock band in a world where sex and music are like the most important things on earth. Almost has sort of a Scott Pilgrim feel with regards to how the world feels tuned to its characters. But it's also absolutely not for anyone under 18, given it is very explicit. There is nudity and sex constantly, but there's always a story reason for it. But the author is never shy and it is presented in full detail. So, you have to be down with that. It strangely never feels pervy, or at least I don't think so.
Kill Six Billion Demons, which triggered something new: pages are so dense with detail and narrative that a weekly update schedule wasn't good enough because I started forgetting plot threads. Characters would turn up that, in the narrative of the comic, were "just" introduced in the previous chapter. But when you're reading it as it gets posted, that previous chapter might have been three months ago. It just reads better more as a traditional comic, where you digest entire chapters all at once. I stopped reading in 2018 and have been trying to get back to it, since there's a big backlog to dig in to now (I'm at the start of book 4, and book 6 just started).

Chp 82-85 End
Tumblr media
Omg guys, we are So Close to the end! Just 3 more chapters and I will be all Caught up! I’m within the Year! How exciting!
Loup is hidden, in hiding, trying to sus out the omega machine and put together it is a machine to see all and know all and he knows that Coyote knew that knowing everything would be boring as shit
Loup is now a teenager who has no idea what his feelings are since being Newman
Robot gives no fucks about secret wolf gods, as long as it doesn’t interfere with his religion
So uhhh, oops. I am so sorry Reynard about losing your original body. But I’m glad that you’re happy that you want to choose to stay with Annie.
But that is it for tonight. I swear the next time I blog Gunnerkrigg Court, I’m reaching the end! Let’s Go

Gunnerkrigg Liveblog #3: Fairies and Ghosts
"So I suppose that means I'll be posting my next one a bit sooner," I said, a whole month ago.
Yeah. My apologies for the delay.
Either way, let's get started with today's chapter: "Broken Glass and Other Things" (8.121), which I assume is about broken glass and other things.
Tumblr media
I turn to the next page (8.122) and already see broken glass, along with some other things that are not broken glass. See? My prediction skills are utterly perfect. I'm a genius.
But in seriousness, this scene appears to be a flashback. Annie is talking to her late mother (8.123) before we suddenly flash forward to the present.
Having just fallen last chapter, Annie is being carried by two creepy green birds (8.124). They carry her to safety, and Annie takes the chance to walk around the shore.
Then we see something I didn't expect: apparently the birds are robots (8.127). That's new to me.
Then, on one page (8.128), we meet both the shadow individual from back in Chapter 1, and also two new kinda-creepy elf-looking faces; one a pale redhead, one a tanned... "bluehead?" Is that a word? Wait! The page right after (8.129) tells us that the shadow creature from down here is not the one from the previous chapter (but I still think he's the one from Chapter 1).
But either way, Annie is talking to a bird-headed individual right now (8.132)
Tumblr media
That sounds kind of worrying, to put it lightly.
Mr. Bird here appears to be some kind of psychopomp, since he mentioned being the one who escorts the dead (8.134). He gave Annie a red gemstone. On the next page (8.135), we learn that it's called a "blinker stone" and that you can summon fire with it by mentally picturing one.
We're in flashback mode again, and out in a single page (8.136). Annie chats with the fairies/elves, who explain that they want to die so they can be reincarnated and go to Gunnerkrigg Court (8.138). Unexpected motive, but alright.
Then a creepy ghost lady walks up to Annie and tries stabbing her with a sword (8.141). But cavalry arrives just in time to save Annie, with the cavalry being none other than... Kat! She's in a hovering vehicle machine (8.142), and she's here to pick up Annie back home. Annie says her goodbyes to the fairies, and she takes Shadow 2 back home with her (8.145).
The final page is an exposition dump on fairies (8.148). Honestly, I expected this chapter to give us some explanation for the "Surma" line from the previous one. However it looks like we'll only get an explanation for that later. Either way, it's been a fun read, and I'll see you all whenever next time happens to be.

Man, it’s good that Annie’s asking these questions now, but it’s so hard to be interested or excited about it, with everything that’s lead up to this moment.
Like it’s probably just gonna lead into more exploration of who Anthony is and why he does the things he does, which like Yawn, really.

I read your short story and loved it, but it made me realize my problems with Saffron & Sage: it comes across as a bunch of shorts haphazardly stuck together. Each individual segment is good, but they're incongruous. It feels like the broader narrative and character arcs are superseded by the premise and jokes you have for that chapter, leading to jarring tonal shifts and characters being railroaded by the plot, rather than the plot being subject to their actions.
Thank you!
Saffron and Sage being episodic was intentional. I felt Legend of the Hare had suffered from being too long and windy, and wanted to try doing a series of short comics. The advantage of this approach were
1. I wouldn’t be stuck forever if I felt a plot had stalled out (The flashback in Chapter 5 is something of a trash fire, IMO, but it’s the past now and it doesn’t matter).
2. I could be a bit more experimental/fluid
3. I could better react to feedback or life events (Had I not done this method, Sabu leaving would’ve been the end of SaffSage, probably).
My inspiration for this was Gunnerkrigg Court, especially early Gunnerkrigg Court which also has some fairly wild tone swings and has the sense Tom Siddell is trying to figure out what his comic’s about.
Then I felt the attempt to be a shounen battle comic in Chapter 3 was a bit of a whiff, so I took advantage of the change to a new artist to try a lighter, jokier tone. I do agree that this chapter in particular has a bit of a “stuff is happening” element to it, but it’s relatively easy once it’s done to do a chapter 7 that maybe tones it down a little and lets Saffron get back to business.

Just started reading Gunnerkrigg court by Tom Siddel. It might be my new favourite thing. I just redrew the cover for chapter 3 while I’m getting used to drawing the characters.
I’d recommend everyone to read it here: Gunnerkrigg Court

I paused reading Gunnerkrigg Court a couple of months ago because sometimes the storyline just doesn’t lend itself to a 3 pages a week format rather than being read as a graphic novel. Then I had a dream that I was at school with Zimmy (she had some scary power that involved a lot of blood and mystery and someone came to take her away and I earned her trust by climbing up the outside of a building to warn her haha) then saw a few posts in the tags I follow here which prompted me to catch up on the last two chapters today and damn was that a rewarding read for someone who has been reading it since 2007 (maybe earlier?).
Anyway, I really recommend it! Maybe I’ll re-read the graphic novels sometime soon, to get the full force of the story all over again.
(One time at Thought Bubble in Leeds I went up to the author Tom Siddell while I was wearing roller derby gear and gushed about how happy I was that Kat is queer.)

so I thought I saw a drawing of kreyul (snailord's character) drawn you somewhere??? but now I can't find it anywhere, so do you know where I can find it or if it even exists in the first place? I feel like I'm imagining things lol
Ooops! An even bigger apology for how incredibly late these replies are, I am a very clever person who clicked “save to draft” instead of “post” and just now noticed ^^;
I drew Kreyul (and Emai’s shoulder!) as a cameo in Always Human:https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/always-human/season-2-60-going-home/viewer?title_no=557&episode_no=66I am 99.99% certain that’s the only time I’ve drawn him :)
Anonymous said:Duuuude I read the first few chapters of always human when you started it but never got into the grove of checking every update !!! Now I downloaded webtoon and I can read all of it in one go :’)
I hope you enjoy it :D :D :D
Anonymous said:Hey, I know you probably get this a lot but I just wanted to say thank you. Your comic Always Human really helped me on a very personal level with my extreme self conscious issues and most of all it helped me with coming to terms with my sexuality. Seeing characters like me was so instrumental in me being able to be open up about who I am, not only my friends and family but also to myself. Continued ~It is so hard to find content with completely open wlw and your comic really helped show that I could live a normal and happy life with another girl. But it’s also a very good story. Not only does your story have good representation but it has an incredibly strong plot with even stronger characters. Not to mention how breath taking your art is. It takes me away every time I see it. Continued~I have recommended your comic more times than I can count. And your new comic Ariel Magic is proving to be just as good, I excitedly await every new chapter. So I kinda just wanted to say that what you do and all of the hard work you put into it is inspiring. It seems kinda silly but your comic really did change my life and it will always have a special place in my heart. So, thank you. End~
asdfkslkdfj oh my goodness thank you so much! This is such an open, honest message and WOW thank you. I’m really, really glad I was able to help you in some way, thank you for taking the time to read Always Human and connect with the characters, and for enjoying a story that I put so much of my soul into. I’m so humbled to know that it means so much to you!I wish you all the very best, and I hope the stories you read are filled with wonderful queer characters. We all deserve to see ourselves reflected in fiction :)
@katherinelemagne said:Hi! I’m sorry if you’ve been asked this before, but I’m wondering if you could name a few of your favorite webcomics? I know that you sometimes feature characters in your own comics, but it would be awesome if we could get a consolidated list. I discovered Love Not Found thanks to you and am looking for more solid recommendations! Thank you! PS, really enjoying Aerial Magic! :)
Replying to this publicly because I think other people might be interested in my response :)
There are so many amazing webcomics and I’m sure I’ve forgotten half of my favourites, but here’s a incomplete list of webcomics that I love dearly
Wilde Life
Namesake

Sleepless Domain
Spectraspell
Gunnerkrigg Court
Everblue
Ava’s Demon

And thank you for the kind words

May 22nd-May 28th, 2019 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from May 22nd, 2019 to May 28th, 2019.  The chat focused on the following question:
Of all the webcomics you read, which one would you say you read the most (whether you judge that by quantity or frequency)?  What makes that comic stick with you?
€heshire777
Hoo, boy
Once I start reading a comic I do check back whenever I have time and do the same for all of them
brb and I'll scrounge up some links
RebelVampire
1) Zenchav. Which part of it is bias because I've known Draco for years, but I also just also love seeing Draco's art and seeing what happens to all the precious grump bears: http://khyatix.com/ 2) Psychteria. Again, some amount of bias. But Cali's comic just has really fantastic expressions going on and I'm always super jealous of them and love to stare at them: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/psychteria/list?title_no=13754&page=1 3) Galebound. Galebound is legitimately just a series I love. Fantasy, political drama, the ability for me to spread propaganda in favor of the bad guy, and Pascal. Thus I never mind re-reading it when the situation comes about http://www.galebound.com/ 4) Radio Silence. This is one that sticks with me less because I seek it out, but because Vanessa is super amazing at promoting and it keeps winding up on my agenda through one event or another. So I have re-read half a dozen times. Not to say its not enjoyable, of course, because it's a well-done comic with relateable characters and a story tell frame that's not too common to webcomics. http://www.radiosilencecomic.com/(edited)

ive been reading gunnerkrigg court for so long that i have the update schedule memorized and i can check it without having to be reminded by an updater or anything. it updates a lot which keeps it on my mind more often. the story is just so fun and i care a lot about the characters, it makes it so easy to go back and read old chapters and end up going through the whole archive https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/
and i can pretty much say the same thing about super galaxy knights deluxe r, except i haven't been reading it for as many years. it's one of those comics where if i click on a link to an older page, i'm going to end up going through the entire archive. it's such a funny story that keeps you guessing! i don't really need a reminder/updater to stay up to date on this comic either, if i see it's 9:00 pm i think "oh sgkdr has a new page up" and i go check it. great comic seriously. http://sgkdr.thecomicseries.com/

@RebelVampire D'aaaaw, thank you~!
The ones I've talked with creators about the most are the ones that tend to stick with me so I don't know if that goes to a purely reading level, haha. Psychteria ( http://psychteria.fenauriverse.moe/ ) and Linked ( http://linkedcomic.com/ ) being the top two for that. Also, some of the first webcomics I ever read stick with me because they helped fuel my interest in wanting to make webcomics. So the two that come to mind for that are Dream*Scar ( http://dream-scar.net/ ) and Sister Claire ( https://www.sisterclaire.com/ ).
The comics that were in StArt Faire will always have a special place in my heart as well :3

I used to follow a lot more webcomics but lately the only one I keep checking in on is http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/. I still like it. I guess it's a comforting force of habit at this point, as well. I think he nailed the pace required to keep people checking in three times a week. Most other longform story comics I wait to update a bunch and then binge.(edited)

Conversely, some comics I've dropped off on, now they have too MANY updates for me to keep track of, like http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/, and I'm intimidated by the amount of reading I'd have to do to catch up

Hard question to answer! If you want to be technical, the comics I read most are the ones that update daily...so Skin Horse, Kevin & Kell, and Schlock Mercenary. http://skin-horse.com/ https://www.kevinandkell.com/ https://www.schlockmercenary.com/
Looking at it another way: most comics I save up for at least 10 strips/pages and then binge-read to catch up -- but there's one I read on every update, and that's Forward. http://forwardcomic.com/index.php
Desnik
Wow, Schlock Mercenary still going! That's awesome

Still going strong, too! It's seriously #lifegoals

So that is the end of this session for Gunnerkrigg Court. By my math if I do like 3 chapters per session, I should be caught up in 3 sessions, which is cool. Interesting. Another series under my belt.
So we figured out time. By asking the Gods to help us time travel. Which is OK! Kat has learned that asking for help is Okay.
And Annie learned that it is ok to just take things slowly with her father. And that he is trying to reach out.
(and zimmy is having a mental breakdown with more sinister machines and whatever this Omega project is)
But that’s okay because...Annie is one whole person now? Which...alright I get because one of the defining splits between the two Annies beyond Forest and Court was their relationship with their Mother and how they view her. So yeah the idea of them, again both not the actual original this Time Line Annie, merging to find closure and understanding herself and her mother, like as a plot development I get. I get what they are trying to do with the outfit merge and what not.
But, it all felt out of her control for that? It wasn’t even a chapter centered on her processing it herself, this was a Zimmy chapter and Zimmy’s hangups. And while they were the same, they were two distinct people so...having them merge to one feels, off? Werid? They are the same but have different opinions soooo. Yeah, that’s a way to get the two Annie closure but I thought it would be a grander thing than just “Zimmy’s therapy session turned into a Help Annie”. If she had consented to the thing or both had agreed that would be one thing, but it was chosen for her so....yeah a bit weird if you think about it.

me at 3:30 am thinking about gunnerkrigg court/the robot goddess-angel kat theory/the theory that the OG annie died when she fell off the bridge in chapter 7 and the tic tocs sent back in time by kat were what created this timeline WHILE rereading the gkc forum AND diferent pages that only add fuel to such theories
