Judging Iconic CR Quotes in TLOVM Based on How Well They Translated Them into Polish
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<yes this a very niche topic but it's been on my mind ever since i found out tlovm had polish subtitles and lektor(basically dubbing but it's one guy just reading out the script) so buckle in because i'm about to ramble on about things you didn't know you needed. I fell i should point out i'm not an actual translator, just bilingual and this is very much all just light-hearted fun>
Also if you take away anything from this post is that, no matter how good the translation is a lot of nuance will inevitably get lost. So if you can, consume media in it's original language.
1) "Your soul is forfeit"
Tumblr media
Starting off.... well I wouldn't say strong but go off I guess. To be fair we don't have a good word for forfeit but "The fate of your soul is doomed" is edgy even by Percy standards. Looses the dramatic flair ngl. Top 10 things you could hear behind a Żabka. I could fight this man behing said żabka/10
2) "I would like to rage"
Tumblr media
No, I don't think you would like to do that. sounds like a teen trying to explain to their mom why they should be allowed to go to a rave. Captures the absurdity of the quote though. This list is really making me realize how many cool words the polish language is missing ywy let him go to the rave/10
3) "You were the one I was least looking forward to"
Tumblr media
Me @ my polish teacher. Something's very wrong with the syntax but I'm too stupid to figure out what. The closest I can compare it is yoda: mild edition. Love that added the word meeting, like now it just sounds like they're coworkers in a company meeting. TLOVM-best-workplace-comedy-2022/10
4) "You know I'm in love with you, right?"
Tumblr media
aghsdfsgh ok ok i honestly kinda love this one. like unironically "you know that I've fallen in love with you?" [my best translation attempt back into english] king shit, adorable, showstoping Like somehow they made it even more awkward than the original Vax confessing his love for Kiki the same way he'd tell someone else he has a crush. aaa i can't explain how much i actually love this translation. like this man is equally as suprised about the fact as Kiki. man really went oh shit Kiki guess what? being-in-love-with-Kiki/10
5) "You're the face I saw when murder entered my heart"
Tumblr media
Ha. Turns out Percy quotes just don't work in Polish. Dude's too rich to be slavic. Fans want him, Polish syntax hates him. even though I'm mostly focusing on the subtitles instead of lektor tm , this one i think actually did a better job of capturing the feeling instead of a direct translation. "You're the face I saw when I dreamt of my bloody revenge"[lektor] vs "You're the face I saw when killing entered my blood" [subtitles] No i don't know why they changed it to killing and blood instead of heart/10
6) "I broke the world for us"
Tumblr media
....I had to look up what "zbrukać" means. Has the vibes of like "fuck, i didn't study at all and really zbrukałam that exam" instead of you know destroying the world. Queen really looked up her best old-timey rural poland vocab words for this one, huh? Minus points for having to inflect Sylas' name Deprecha/10
7) "Darling, take that mask off"
Tumblr media
Alright time to rant bestie. I love me a good petname but all polish ones are so romance centric it fucking hurts. "Kochanie" translated most often as honey or love, is really just dedicated to your romantic partner, you really wouldn't use it in the way Vex does. And like sure I think we all know i'm always here for perc'ahlia content but this scene is so good because it isn't really about their romance, not at this point of time at least. i guess the translation just adds a romantic subtext to not only Vex's iconic line but also Percy's reaction and i'm... well not angry but kinda disappointed. In conclusion we need more platonic petnames in polish/10
Bonus~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no stop getting inflected, you're so sexy haha- TTvTT i can't explain to you how much these images are making me cringe. there's nothing i wouldn't do to make sure people would stop inflecting english surnames the same way they do polish ones ywy De Rolów will actually haunt me in my dreams. If I ever become president, i'm putting in a new law where only polish or surnames ending in -wski can be inflected Please make it stop/10
....That's it. There's no point to this. Finally found a good use for being bilingual, nothing more.
Thoughts on poetry and how you get students excited about it.
hmm unfortunately i didn't get a chance to do a ton of poetry while i was student-teaching last year, but i think for writing in general but especially for poetry, stressing that so much of it is subjective!
like yes there are Terms with specific definitions, but even then there are so few Correct Answers - in fact, one of the things i repeat ad nauseum as an english teacher is "there are no wrong answers, as long as you can prove it in the text"
i did some poetry with my juniors who really did not like me anywhere near as much as my freshmen did, and i remember them surprising me with a heated discussion about whether a certain line of a poem should be considered a metaphor or personification. make it fun. give them incentives.
i did a lesson on william carlos williams and after analyzing a few of his poems i had them spend the rest of class writing their own in his style, while keeping myself available to give feedback when they were finished. some of them were like "idk what to write about i don't get poetry idkkkk :(" and i was like "look around the room and pick something, and write about it" and one kid was like "haha ok i'm gonna write about this water bottle" just to be annoying and i was just like "ok! come show me when you're done!" and when he was done i gave feedback just as seriously as i did for the kids who wrote about things that were meaningful to them. and yknow what? by the end of class, that kid had written a poem about a water bottle that demonstrated the characteristics of wcw's style of poetry. and so did his friend who wrote about a sweatshirt.
another day we read annabel lee by poe. they'd already done the raven before i started student-teaching, so they were familiar w poe and had liked him enough to have a couple running jokes about him/the raven even though a few months had passed. after we read the poem and went over difficult vocab and analyzed the poetic devices, i pointed out a couple of seemingly innocuous elements of the poem that, interpreted a certain way, change it from a boring romantic love poem to a dark thriller about obsession. by the end of class they were engaged in an intense discussion about whether the speaker of the poem had ever even had a conversation with annabel lee, or if he was just an obsessive creep who liked to sleep in her tomb. lots of laughing and freaking out about how weird that is, but how ultimately it makes sense when you consider poe's other work
right before quarantine started i made a list of all the poems i'd read with them so far and wrote up an assignment for a debate: if only one of these poems could remain in the curriculum from now on, which one should it be, and why? i passed out numbered slips of paper to assign a picking order, and they got to choose which poem's team they wanted to be on (w a limit ofc). i gave them the order of the match-ups, and told them to build a case for their poem and against the other poem.
"but sefa," you might be saying, "how can you ask your students to prove one poem is better than another? it's so subjective!" but that's exactly the point. when you take away the pressure for them to reach a certain conclusion (especially for something subjective) they get to be creative and have fun with it. i had several students email me after quarantine started saying things like "i'm so disappointed i won't get to completely destroy carl sanburg's chicago and prove that annabel lee is the best poem of all time :("
long story short: trick them into thinking you're taking it less seriously. let them work through things and come to their own conclusions. tell them about widely agreed upon interpretations and ask if they agree. they don't care because they think it has nothing to do with them, even if they're writing their own poems. get on their level. make it funny. let them get heated. even if there's a right answer, let them discuss it for a bit before you give it away. give them a task they'll WANT to succeed at, and make it so that the task can't be accomplished without them applying the lesson content
it's like hiding vegetables in a little kid's mac and cheese. first you get them excited, and then the learning happens. the curriculum means nothing if their brains are turned off from the start
GG 2x04 Rewatch
Not gonna lie, this is probably going to be the only episode I rewatch. The rest has been kinda tainted by 2x13 and s3.
Generally, my opinions tend not to line up with the majority of the fandom - sorry, not sorry.
Tumblr media
1. What was your favourite scene of the episode? Tell us why!
It’s a tie between the bathroom break and the vette smash. Bathroom break - for obvious reasons - I’m a hoe and I live for that shit. The vette smash - I just vibe with Rio’s petty energy and the way you could see how much he was enjoying himself, Dean being metaphorically castrated by the guy who just fucked his wife... chef’s kiss.
2. Was there any scene that missed the mark for you? And if so, how?
I WISH beth would’ve bit back when Dean brought up the shooting. It irks me so much that she contnually rolls over for him. She spitefully gets payback, but rarely puts him in his place (if it were up to me, his place would be by boomer-jeff’s side in the dumpster)
3. This episode starts with each of the girls trying to make amends in their own way – Beth through her family, Ruby through charity and Annie through Marion. What do you think this tells us about each of them?
I feel like Beth and Ruby’s attempts at making amends always feel incredibly shallow and I can never tell if it’s down to shitty writing or if its because they genuinely don’t feel guilty. If’it’s the former - I’m not surprised. If it’s the latter - I hope the girls own their lack of remorse, in future.
Annie strikes me as the one who feels genuine guilt over a lot of this, and it’s been pretty consistent - even when Lucy died in S3. I think it makes sense for her to be the most cut up about it because she always struck me as someone who’s ruled by her emotions - she doesn’t exactly think before she acts, and is typically pretty impulsive.
4. Rio offers Beth the keys to the kingdom! This scene is always hotly debated in the fandom! What do you think he meant in the moment of it? Do you think he ever actually saw or even wanted Beth as a partner?
Straying from the general consensus, as usual - I don’t think he was playing her and I don’t think he planned to take a cut of whatever Beth came up with.
Personally, I don’t think it makes much sense. He’s already learnt that he gets further with Beth through praise and reward, as opposed to intimidation - more flies with honey, yada yada yada.
If the whole thing was just a manipulation it would have made more sense for him to convince her that he had faith in her and offer her a 25% cut of any cash washing operation she could come up with. She would’ve bit his hand off at the opportunity.
I think he was telling the truth when he said that he was done, I think he was genuinely flipping his game from cash to pills. At this point, Turner was looking closely and so it would make sense for Rio to want to distance himself from the counterfeit operation. He literally explained back in season one that it’s how he avoids being caught, he flips his game before the feds get too close.
I get the feeling that he probably didn’t intend to have much contact with Beth going forward and was going to leave her to do whatever she wanted with the rest of the money. It’s not that I think he wouldn’t manipulate her, he absolutely would. I just don’t really think it makes sense in this context.
5. Do you think Marion had any idea that Boomer was taking advantage of her?
I think it was probably similar to the situation with Beth, regarding Dean’s cheating: the thought was there, but she never really confronted the idea and lived in a comfy little denial bubble.
6. Dean’s attachment to the corvette is played in many different ways in s2! How do you interpret this?
I think it’s the perfect display of his narcissism and toxic masculinity. The car is as grandiose as his ego and he thinks it’s going to save the dealership, much like he thinks he’s going to be the one to save his family from ruin.
7. Why do you think Beth kept the money from Ruby and Annie?
I think she’s hugely manipulative and likes to be the be the one holding the cards. She only wanted to rob the store when she had her own problems to worry about and then convinced the girls to go along with it, she went to Rio to ask for more work back in season 1, she asked him to up their drops, the list goes on.
She tends to call the shots and drag them along for the ride, so it seems consistent with her personality that she’d keep the money to herself until she needed it, and then inform the girls.
8. The birth of the cars for cash business! Is this Beth’s best idea? Her worst? How do you rank it, both in general and among the girls’ other schemes? And do you think it could’ve worked longterm if Turner wasn’t so fixated on Beth?
Probably the best idea she came up with tbh. The others were pretty poorly thought through, as far as long term strategising goes. It could’ve worked really well if they had an accountant keeping the books looking kosher.
9. The Beth and Dean arc this episode is perhaps one of their most frustrating (in spite of the extremely cathartic resolution, haha). Do you think Dean’s belittling of Beth and his feelings of Beth emasculating him are new to their relationship or have been around for a long time? How do you think they really see each other?
I think they lived in a state of blissful ignorance and their initial interaction (love you, tunafish) was really indicative of that. Him belittling her was probably prevalent in the beginning of the relationship, but I think she probably just placated him and got on with her life. Now she’s clearly growing tired of his shit, just not. fast. enough.
I don’t think they’re in love though. I think Dean’s feelings for her are fuelled by narcissim. She’s obviously good looking and from the outside, he has it all. The house in the burbs, kids, hot wife, family business etc. That’s what he cares about - the image. I don’t think Beth is too dissimilar. I think she probably looked up to Judith as a teenager and idiolised that life, which Dean could provide. I don’t think she ever had deep, romantic, feelings for him. But she probaly does care for him, to an extent.
10. The Annie and Beth arc is also pretty telling of the characters’ history. It’s also one of the few times we’ve deliberately seen Beth seek out Annie for comfort (often it’s incidental that Annie’s there). What do you think this tells us about their relationship, both historically, and where they are at this point in the series?
I think it’s one of the few moments that their sibling bond is believable. It’s pretty accurate that, as Annie is maturing, she becomes less of a fuckup baby sister who needs everyone to clean up after her and grows into someone that beth can turn to for comfort/advice. Makes sense that this happens later in life, considering the significant age gap.
11. Ruby’s scene at the Quick Cash with JT is really significant – both in terms of it being a generally delightful scene, but also as a touchstone demonstration of Ruby’s increasing unwillingness to swallow her pride. Do you think Ruby prior to the series commencing would’ve reacted to JT’s goading in this way? And how do you think this scene compliments the scene earlier in the episode with Stan admitting he’s taken another loan too?
I thinks she would’ve wanted to, but literally couldn’t afford to. She had the means and opportunity to give him a dose of karma. But it’s always been in her nature to talk shit - diner dickweed in season 1. She refused to swallow her pride and apologise.
That, along with Stan taking another loan, seems to fit in well with the Hill’s entire arc of trying to be good people and being consistently shit on for it.
12. THE. BATHROOM. BREAK. That’s it. That’s the question. Please elaborate on your thoughts and feelings.
Am i supposed to be able to form thoughts or sentences that adequately express my feelings?
Petty king is also king of consent, he let beth take the lead - love it.
Judging from the papertowel dispenser, stroke game was strong.
Penis levitation is now a part of my vocab, thank you for your service, Rio.
10/10 - would definitely recommend being railed in a bathroom by this man.
13. Greg and Annie have what’s their last break-up in this episode (at least up until now). Why do you think this particular one stuck? And do you see any sort of future for them?
I feel like the key difference was Annie putting her foot down and saying “no”. Idk if I can see them getting back together, becasue I don’t think she’d have another affair when there’s a child in the mix and he’s too much of a pussy to divorce Nancy unless he has a guaranteed backup plan aka Annie. Still kinda ship it though.
14. Annnnd lastly, what do you make of the final scene at Boland Motors? What do you think Rio thought following both the bathroom break and this moment?
I think that Rio was genuinely flipping his game and moving away from cash and, in turn, Beth. But the bathroom break changed his mind, so he got curious and wanted to know what she came up with for the money, only to find out that she gave it to Dean. Given how possessive Rio is of his money, in combination with the feelings for Beth which had just been stirred up, I think his jealous side came out and he took back the money.
Up until this point, the entire Brio dynamic was him holding the power and exerting it whenever he saw fit. The second he followed her into that bathroom, he gave up whatever semblance of control or power he had left. The man is a very obvious control freak and so I don’t think he does well or feels secure in those situations. Him smashing up the car was basically an attempt to re-establish dominance and convince himself (and Beth) that he was still in control; with the added bonus of emasculating dean and making money.
And daaaayyyyyyyuuuuuuummmmm if I don’t enjoy watching that scene. The emasculation of Dean, Rio being petty, Beth malfunctioning at the possibility of Dean finding out she got dicked down in the bathroom, while he sat outside trying (and failing) to get the waiter’s attention. I DIE
For Charis ;)
There can be different approaches to learning French, and I don’t think I started or are currently am learning in the best way haha. But I will link some useful resources that definitely did teach me something
For starters, here is a link to a post that talks about how to approach language learning based on how you learn:(https://ipablo6.tumblr.com/post/165748273056/language-learning-made-easy)
immersion
I think it is important to imMerSe yourself into the language/culture. So you become more comfortable with it. This can happen by (along side doing planned and formated study) watching shows in French, listening to music and podcasts in French and finding other ways to fill your brain with the language without it always being seen as ‘learning time’. If there are any shows or movies that you know really well/ liked alot in English, hopefully you can find it in French bc whilst listening to the French vers, you won’t be completely lost and confused as to what is happening
Sometimes I watch Peppa Pig in French harhar and I think it is good listening practice, as to how french is actually spoke (tbh it is kinda hard to hear understand sometimes, thankfully there are often subs harhahr)
some cartoons in FrencH:
- peppa pig :p
- lazy town );
- miraculous ladybug ;)
- charlie and lola :)
music:
- oui, oui baguette
- *fraincais
- french covers of english songs
books:
- childrens books, that may be easier to understand?
- books for beginner
- poems, novels and plays (probably a higher level of words used)
youtube:
- youtubers recommended by aspoonfulofsugar
- recommended by naomisfrench
- wendigofrench has recommended ‘What the cut’ for intermediate level
movies:
- disney movies
I also recently set my phone to French, which seems scary but wasn’t even a terrible idea. If it is too overwhelming at first, you can find your way back to the settings and change the language back. Since having it in French, I have learnt different words easily because they keep popping up (like ‘cancel’, ‘settings’ and just some apps in different languages). Highly recommended
Incase you get lost on social media if your phone is in french
vocabulary
There is a post that lists important vocabulary to learn whilst starting a new language. It is very useful to have a set group of vocab to learn at one time so it is easier to stay focused on a certain topic (especially when self learning), well tha’ts what I think. Once you get into learning the language (following Tumblr accs, watching shows and all that) you will often come across new cool fun exciting vocab and I think that it is important to write down those snippets that you find and include them in their respectable postitions in the list, or maybe you could just learn/revise them seperate to the list thing
If you have anything that you have a big interest in something, like space, finding a vocabukary list for that topic will be good to learn so that you can feel comfortable and talk about things that you enjoy talking about, instead of just learning general terms.
learning slang is also similar to being able to personalise your speech!
vocab list thing:
- recommended by aspoonfulofsugar
- art
- philosophy
- interstellar
- university
- gardening
- typically teen expressions
questions :D
It is good to know how to ask for things ig. A good post on asking questions by studyegn
creating goals and milestones
without having a set curriculum and teacher to guide and record your progress, having self made goals and milestones can be very useful. There is a post that shares some recommendations for language learning milestones and I have been using some myself
One of my goals is to create a diary ind French! Which kind of forces myself to learn how to express feelings and be able to recount the day in French
some posts specific to self-expression: - feelings
- ‘diary writing in french’
other resources
I have not really committed to any one specific app for french (since the best ones seem to be the ones that ask for money, realizashun). But there are apps that I have used that have been good and could help if used consistently. I think it wouldn’t be good to rely on only one app to teach you everything, it would be good to search around on how different sites and apps differently teach one topic and search if there is more information on one topic than what a app/site is telling you
apps:
- duolingo harhar
- drops (i tried using this app to also learn tagalog *two eyes looking to the side emoji* - memrise
- rosetta stone ? i think itz money
sites:
- https://frenchtogether.com/learn-french-youtube/
- https://www.clozemaster.com/l/fra-eng
- 11 hr french learning class
idk what else to add, there is probably a lot that could be added like grammar resources but i don’t know great grammar resources myself
WELL THEN, thnk yuo 4 read
Practice sentences: (edited and revised....newsflash I made some mistakes lol! 😅) when I edit my practice sentences I will keep my original sentence in brackets and explain where I went wrong....)
1.) 파스타를 제일 좋아해요/ 음식 중에서 파스타를 일 좋아해요.  I like pasta the most (out of food)/ I like pasta most out of food. (파스타는 음식을 제일 좋아해요. - Pasta is my faveourite food) the mistake I made here was using 는 after  파스타 so it translated as "pasta likes food the best!!!!???" Which is a super weird thing to say lol! 😂haha that would get a few questionable looks in a restaurant if I just announced that! So I am super greatfull to the people who sent me corrections 😊
2.) 오늘 밤에는 스파게티를 요리했어요. - tonight I cooked spaghetti/ I cooked spaghetti tonight.
I am a beginner so if you spot any mistakes please let me know! This is to help me memorise vocab and spelling 😁 photo is sourced from unsplash but I have edited it myself and added korean text. Hope this vocab list is of some help.....also I hope the vocab is correct! 😅😀
 happy studying guys! 😊✏📖
General WIP Tag ?
Thanks sm @someoddwriter for tagging me!
We’ll do Anna bc I always ignore her but she is the big main character lol
List five basic facts for your OC:
She’s good about standing up for herself, but she doesn’t make a big show about it.
She’s into drawing, but she’s also into learning and stuff (this was disproven but for character purposes she’s a “right brain” thinker)
Can’t deal with stress or failure very well
She’s demisexual (doesn’t figure this out until like the end ish of the book though; vocab like that wasn’t mainstream in 1910 and stuff)
The person she considers herself closest to is Charlotte, then Oliver, then Rose
If your OC could have any superpower, which would it be and why?
She’d probably want to be invisible (probably me too lol). She’s kinda nosy/into gossip and stuff and im going to be honest she would be into spying on people
Post a pic / gif that describes your OC
Tumblr media
the rabbit girl is anna get it
uh no actually how about
Tumblr media
tbh she’s a prissy rich girl from the 1910s/1920s so yeah nailed it
Summarize your WIP in 10 words or less:
Ghost girl lives in house; different people and time periods. (I guess that’s pretty much it, I would’ve liked 15 words)
Do you have any villains in your story?
Not really. One of the future tenants of the house is in my outline as “annoying guy” but that’s like it.
What’s easier for you to write, dialogue or description?
Dialogue a million percent. Well, I’m fine at writing description, but I find it hard to work it into my writing. If my task was to describe a room and that’s it I would be fine, but I struggle to find a good time to describe scenes and physical character traits in my books.
Do you have a favorite writing-related quote?
Not off the top of my head, but I did a quick google search of writing quotes and my favorite was: “The worst thing you write is better than the best thing you did not write.” [-author unknown]
If you could assign your story one song, what would it be?
Lowkey Anna Sun by Walk the Moon bc her name is Anna and the song is about a house (that’s just luck though, haha). The vibe kinda fits with When You Were Young by The Killers (utter bop) though.
Where do you get inspiration from?
A lot of artistic photography and very occasionally songs, but a lot of times I just come up with random stuff and piece it together lol. Sometimes I just get in my head one really dramatic scene/line of dialogue etc and I feel the need to come up with a book plot around it
Do you tend to overwrite or underwrite in your first draft?
Underwrite as hell. Like I said before I have a description problem so I end up going back and adding more.
Ok I think everyone I know has been tagged already but if you haven’t been / if you want to do it again please do and tag me in it !! I wanna read you guys’ stuff I really do
Kooza thoughts!
So I just went to see Kooza on the 23rd July and WOW was it good. It’s kind of my first cirque show I’ve seen live (watched arena saltimbanco a few years back but for some reason I barely remember it), though I grew up watching the DVD recordings of Quidam, Alegria and Corteo. I’ve just finished watching the DVD recording of Kooza. Kooza’s one of my favourite shows now, I think better than Corteo (except for the singer! I really like the Corteo singer) and maybe even Alegria? So now I’m gonna write down my thoughts before I forget them :
- it’s really surreal seeing a show in the big top, but not necessarily better than watching the DVD recording! Watching it live, everything is more intimate and bold, and you really get absorbed in the performance, but if you miss something that’s it there’s no rewinding in real life. On DVD however you can see smaller details, like the gears on the singer, charivari and contortionist outfits, or the facial expressions of the performers
- the contortionists were arranged like a sort of cube when they came out, which looked really cool
- Pity some acts were cut out or changed, I would’ve liked to see the pickpocket (the guy shouting TICKETS and running around looked like a really half hearted replacement for him) and juggler and we didn’t even get to see the chair balancer! He was replaced by a cyr wheel act (which honestly wasn’t that great). Not sure why, maybe he was unwell?
- I felt the humour was a bit lame, especially all the dick jokes, like when the king stuck his taser at the guy’s crotch, or when one of the clowns went under the other’s legs and shouted ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’, they were funnier on DVD. Still made me laugh though! But the part of the dog peeing on the crowd was just weird.
- during the live show, for the first act with the king and his clowns, when they do they disappearing act, the king sits down on the chair, then when the cloth is removed it’s a really muscular bald man wearing the king’s crown (and one of the clowns…squeezes his ManBoob…) and he leads the audience volunteer back to her seat
- probably intentional, but the clowns give me a very tweedledee and tweedledum vibe
- The trickster was actually more sensual (and hot??????????) than I expected, especially with the aerial hoop artist
- Speaking of the trickster he’s so cool??? He’s so confident and bold, the way he dances and leaps around the stage, and the way it looks as though he’s the one controlling everything and everyone, like it was all his creation. And he’s super well dressed, nice touch with the stripes matching up on his clothes
- it’s really hot in Singapore especially compared to Austrailia rn, and the trickster’s costumes are literally all suits, so he’s hot in more ways than one
- PLUS I’m pretty sure he (derek piquette) was sick while he was performing cause he went to see a doctor two days after that show, so honestly what a legend he did such a good job on stage
- On DVD the Trickster and the Crooner were played by different people but when I watched it live I think they’re both played by Piquette!
- I actually really really like the costumes in Kooza, probably my favourite out of the cirque shows I’ve watched (listed above, plus amaluna and la nouba) favourite costumes are the charivari, they’re so cute and bright! The outfits for the aerial hoop and unicycle were also great, the Crooner was super detailed, love his mask, and of course the Trickster’s costumes were amazing too
- the unicycle couple are so cute tbh
- I actually kind of headcanon that the unicycle and the aerial hoop ladies are sisters, since they both have a heart icon on their chest and they have similar hairstyles. Maybe the unicycle lady was the ‘good’ sister, who found love, while the other one is more rebellious, wearing red instead of blue, her hair a bit messier, her love life a bit more unbalanced…?
- I really like how distinctive and fast the costume changes were, like the trickster coming out of the box, the aerial hoop performer taking off her vest, the tightrope men taking off the cloaks and the crooner taking off his cape. the switches were so clean and instant, it looked really good
- I’m starting to think that the part where the guy on the wheel of death trips when he uses the skipping rope is intentional, it happened live and I’ve seen it happen in every recording of kooza??
- Kooza has such a classic, charming vibe overall, from all the blues, reds and yellows, to the costumes, the more traditional acts, the trumpets and drums for the music etc, and it’s not as weird/eccentric as some other cirque shows like totem, dralion, O. It’s got a really nice style to it and I think it’s actually a great show to get your friends introduced to cirque, so they won’t be overwhelmed
- the juggling act was replaced with hoop manipulation, which was very nice (her cloak!! is so fluffy!!!!) and it looked super aesthetic seeing the silver hoops spin around, but she dropped a hoop during her final stunt and the innocent had to go pick it up for her, which was a bit awkward
- the teeterboard act in my show actually had a part where the person on the teeterboard wore stilts/single stilt and they landed perfectly!! glad they added that to the act
- oh man the ending was so bittersweet, how the trickster bows to the innocent the same way he did at the start of the show. The part just after the teeterboard act, when they all leave and the trickster motions for the Innocent to follow him, and he does, he’s not afraid anymore, he’s so excited to see what more there is to this world called Kooza, then the curtains close and he’s left behind. Then the Trickster asks for his cane back and the innocent doesn’t want to give it back after everything he’s just experienced, and he’s so sure that there’s still more, there has to be more, why isn’t the magic working? And he realises that’s the end and he’s shaking his head, this can’t be it, this can’t be the end… And I get the feeling that that’s the end of the world of Kooza itself, now that the Innocent’s the king and he’s back in reality… and you hear him laugh/sob at the very end
- and on DVD the park at the end is in colour, as though Kooza had brought colour to the Innocent’s life
- literally every time I see the ending or listen to the L’innocent song in the soundtrack I still feel like crying???????
- so going to draw fanart
sorry this is so unorganised and my vocab is not the best HAHA, if you read through the entire thing though wow you’re a star
Apps for school
So I have decided to be an active member of the studyblr community and come out of my rabbit hole to share with you some apps that have helped me throughout the school year!
DISCLAIMER: ALL OF THESE APPS ARE ON IOS (APPLE iPHONES) SO IF YOU CAN’T FIND THEM I’M SO SORRY! The majority of the apps listed are part of my current app stash, but I tend to get bored of apps and flip flop (I lack commitment lol) so yah (:
** signifies in use
—————————————————————————————————-
Timers
Forest **: I know that every studyblr uses this app, but it’s really nice! I love it and that it has these cute little trees! Basically, it’s a timer that blocks the usage of other apps while you’re studying. IT EVEN HAS A WIDGET ON CHROME, HOW NICE!!! Anyways this is obvi my fave.
Flat Tomato (Free): This is a Pomodoro timer that I’ve used in the past. It works really well and has a clean interface.
Email
Spark (Free)**: This is a really neat app! It basically organizes your email based on the type of email it is. So there are some sections labeled newsletters, pinned, etc. It has a really nice interface and I LOVE IT
Outlook (Free): This is also a really great email app since it filters out your email from newsletters and shows you priority emails.
Health
Smiling Mind (Free)**: This is an excellent app for meditation and mindfulness and it’s built around the whole premise that mental health is something that shouldn’t be an added expense. A really nice thing about this program is that it has several programs like for teens or for those training for their sport and I find that super neat (me to me: wHy  dO yOu KeEp UsInG tHaT WoRd!??)
Headspace (Free but in app purchases)**: This, like Smiling Mind, is an awesome app for meditation and mindfulness. The app allows you to choose from different programs and work your way through them.
Pillow (free with in app purchases)**: This is a 2in1 alarm and sleep tracker that tracks your sleep and basically rates the quality of sleep that you’re getting based on the feedback it receives. I enjoyed this app so much that I paid for the premium subscription which comes with the ability to power nap and change the alarm clock buzzer sounds (amongst other amazing features), but all-in-all best sleep tracker app I’ve tried.
Clue (free)**; This is such a great app, part of my holy grail of apps actually haha. Basically, Clue keeps track of your period and predicts when the next one will occur based on the data it has gathered. It also is a period journal and you can keep track of things like your mood or whether or not you took the pill that day. 10/10 would recommend!
To-do apps/lists
Todoist (free with in app purchases)**: The To-do list to end to lists… jk. I prefer post-its, but when I do use online stuff I use Todoist because it has such a straightforward, clean, user-friendly interface. I love that it works well with IFTTT and that you can use #s to organize your tasks. Only downside would be the lack of reminders on the free subscription.
Wunderlist (free with in app purchases): Before I used Todoist, I used this gem. With similar functionality to Todoist, it was an easy and fun use. The only deal-breaker for me was the lack of IFTTT integration and those cool # thingies b/c honestly it expedites the process of writing out your task and it makes you feel like some sort of hacker with cheat codes but rlly you’re just a smol bean.
Doo (paid)**: I love this app SOOOO much. In a synopsis, doo displays everything you have to do into cards and you can place them into chronological order and schedule reminders and it’s so nice and so cute and i love it.
Staying Woke:
TheSkimm (free but like you need a subscription??)**: This app gives you a quick rundown of all of the biggest news stories and in language that is comprehensible. I love this app so much but if you’re already a woke-ish human and you want more in-depth news, go for WSJ, The New York Times, The Atlantic, BBC, etc.
TED (free like my country, hahahaha just kidding but not im so sorry im so meme-y)**: I really like TEDTalks because they give you a rundown of all of the advancements in tech and there are some really interesting people on there who present amazing topics.
Educational:
Duolingo (free)**: This app helps you learn languages through dialogue, vocab building, and sentence construction. I use it to keep my native language polished (Spanish) and to practice French. :)
GoogleDocs (free)**: This app is really awesome for working on documents on the go, especially if you need to make quick edits here and there.
OneNote (free)**: So on OneNote all of my classes have a notebook that i use to keep track of notes and assignments. It’s a good place to keep everything and I really like the ease of use.
Quizlet (free)**: For the on-the-go studier, this is seriously a lifesaver. I love using this to make flashcards for vocab or equations, it helps me drill them and memorize efficiently.
As we approach the new semester, I thought I’d share some tips to help you get off to a good start!
Before the Semester starts
Routine - Try to stick to a morning and evening routine. If possible, set out your clothes, pack your backpack, and pack your lunch the night before. If you’re not someone who does things the night before, develop a system for making things run smoothly in the morning.
I personally don’t pack my backpack the night before. I make a checklist of everything that needs to go into my bag on the Iphone reminders app. Every morning, just check or uncheck everything that’s on your list. This is a quick way to make sure you don’t forget anything.
Organize - I don’t just mean tidy up, but really organize! Take the time to get your desk, bookshelves, room, and bathroom just how you want it. Declutter by getting rid of the things you don’t need. Dust all your surfaces and clean your sheets. If you have time, go through your computer and delete unnecessary files that are slowing it down. Once the new semester starts you will have a clean working and living space and you can stress a little less!
Find a study space that works for you - Experiment with a few different combinations to find what works for you. Desk or floor? snacks and drinks? Candles or incense? Music or no music? Windows open? Having the perfect study spot can make all the difference.
Get all your supplies together - Pick out pens, pencils, notebooks, and a bag that’s functional for you. Invest in a good thermos, water bottle, and lunch containers. (Discount stores and dollar stores are a great spot to shop for these things on a budget!) I try to wait until the first day of my class before buying textbooks so I can see which ones I actually need and the cheapest option for obtaining them.
Once the semester starts
Syllabus - The first few days of school when you don’t really have any homework, go through your syllabi! I don’t just mean read through them once and call it good! Take notes on your syllabi like you would with any other important subject and put the notes at the beginning of your notebook/folder for that class.
Textbooks – Once you find out which books you really need look for downloadable pdfs or people in your class who have the pdf, chances are they don’t mind sharing. Professors also sometimes have a pdf of the book that they will give you if they’re on the nicer side haha.
Make friends in your class - This will save your ass!!! Having a couple people to text if you’re absent or wondering which chapters are going to be on the test is super helpful! You usually end up making friends with the people who sit right next to you so if you want on the first day of class (go ahead and be a little judging a book by its cover) sit by people you think you’d like to be friends with if you saw them outside of school. This helps make it easier to strike up conversations and become study buddies, share notes, phone numbers, etc.
Find your spot - It’s important to have a spot on campus where you feel comfortable studying. It doesn’t have to be the library, take some time to explore areas of your campus you didn’t even know existed!
Study every day - Even if it’s just for five minutes try to study every day! Make your own study guides by writing down vocab words and key points that you can add to as you go.
PREREADING- Chapter pre-reading is your best friend! Make a reading schedule to make sure you have covered each topic before the lecture about it. I know this can be tedious, it’s what I struggle with the most, but it will help you tremendously when you face a difficult topic.
Try to keep your focus during lecture – Some lectures are almost impossible to sit through and your grades can easily reflect that. Take notes to keep yourself busy and try to keep good posture. ALWAYS KEEP HEALTHY SNACKS AND WATER WITH YOU! Snacking is the best way to keep you awake in class. If your teacher doesn’t allow snacking you can drink water whenever you feel yourself falling asleep.
“Befriend your professor”- I’m not saying be a kiss ass, but speak up in class and ask your professor questions! The more chill you are with your professor, the more likely they are to warn you about a slipping grade and give you opportunities to bring it up. Also, you’re going to need some professors to write your letter of recommendations and they always sound better if your professor actually remembers having you in the class. The best part of befriending you professor is that some of them have a literal library of books and pdfs that they’d be willing to share with you if you show interest. This tip is most important with professors who are teaching classes from your major!
Join a club - You have time to be in a club!!! Clubs are a great way to gain leadership experience, get active on your campus, and make friends! I was skeptical at first, but joining a club has seriously been the best decision of my college life!
Bujo/Planner
Don’t overwhelm yourself with your bullet journal! – Remember, it’s only effective if it’s functional for you. Try starting with a minimal layout and adding things as you need them. As soon as you come home from school open your bujo or planner and take a look at what you need to do. You don’t have to start your tasks right away but it’s good to have them in your mind. Leave your bujo open on your desk so that you’re reminded to actually do the things you wrote down!
Start your bullet journal’s weekly spread with Sunday, not Monday - This is totally a personal preference but I’ve found it helps me be more productive through the whole week. When Sunday is at the end of my week I have a habit of not writing in my bujo for it and waiting until Monday to take care of my responsibilities.
Set up an assignment tracker - Write down every assignment you do in each class and the grade you received. This will help you see how you’re doing in each class as well as help you calculate your grade towards the end of the semester. It’s frustrating to rely on the professor to upload your assignment grades online so do it yourself!
Self-Care
Build a morning exercise routine – Find something that works for you whether it’s a 10 minute yoga session or an hour long workout. Exercising in the morning can help wake you up and you should see a positive difference if you add meditation into this routine.
Take Breaks - If you find yourself overwhelmed by studying, take a break! This can sometimes be a slippery slope so set a timer on your phone for when your break is over! It’s best to do something productive during your break because it helps you to stay in an active state of mind. Howevr, there’s nothing wrong with scrolling through tumblr for a while as long as you can switch back to your studies.
READ - Not just for school but books that really interest you. If you’re not a big reader it might be because you’ve yet to find something you really like so keep exploring! If reading is a problem for you try some audiobooks! Reading helps you build your vocabulary and writing skills and it’s a never ending source of knowledge and imagination. Seek out books that will help you gain knowledge for your future career path!
Sleep - The most important and most overlooked thing in any college students schedule! I don’t try to go to bed at the same time every day but I do plan my bedtimes based on what time I have to leave in the morning. Look at what time you need to wake up and go to bed eight hours before that. You might have a different bedtime for every day of the week but stick to that on a week to week basis!
Get 2 hobbies! - One that helps your mind and one that helps your body! For your body try skating, bike riding, running, sports with your friends, yoga, hiking, etc. For your mind try writing, drawing, knitting/crocheting, embroidery, painting, gardening, ceramics, etc.
Hope this helped (:
