Located in Denmark, Lake Tissø (Týr’s Lake) was probably one of the most prominent Týr cult sites of pre-Christian times. More than 12 000 objects have been excavated in this major holy site, many of which were gold or silver. It was customary to sacrifice weapons, tools or jewelry by throwing them into the waters of the lake, most likely as an offering to Týr or to ancestors. It was home to a large hall, a ritual hörgr and a handful of minor houses (ca. 550 – 650).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the most famous artifacts excavated on the site include the Goats of Thórr brooch (late Iron Age), the 1.8 kg of gold neck ring (10th century), and the Valkyries (2nd is possibly Freyja) of Tissø.

Hail Týr, the One-Handed As!
The progenitor of agreement among men,
Keeper of promises,
Feeder of the Wolf.
On this day of yours, Teusday, I honor your name
And thank you for your presence.
May you bless and walk with me on this day
And days to come.
Hail Týr!

How does the Ironwood section work in your AU? And what about Gryla?
it, doesn't xvx or at least not at all like in-game
GOWR spoilers below
in my AU, the Ironwoods is a known factual location in Jotunheim from where wolf giants and sorceresses hail from. as such, it's not a safe place for anyone to hide in, so Angrboda doesn't. instead she's sent by her parents to be hidden in the Elysium fields, inside of an oak tree.
i'm, a bit on the fence about the Ironwoods section because, while it's a vital plotbeat for Atreus to meet more peers of his age, and one who can teach him Giant stuff as well as counter his father's narrative about his powers (rage is not inherently negative and to be kept sealed away), I'm on the fence about the handling of Angrboda and Gryla because it's good representation but, i think they could have used a few more writers of color for smth so sensitive like addiction, grief, and generational trauma, plus the "sidekick girl of color who's a LI for the white male protag" trope is touched on but... meh, i felt like it could have gone deeper. that's just my criticism tho
in this segment, Atreus does end up in Ironwoods and runs into Vidarr (he's half-giant in the mythos but in this he's on the side of the Jotun), who had been scavenging items from the land. he's a teen as well and one of the giants rescued by Loki before Lokasenna, and they start chatting. Vidarr shows him some more stuff about the woods, and after some hesitation, invites Atreus to the little hidden land he and the others are biding their time until Ragnarok is done. not all giants are warriors after all. there Atreus meets a whole bunch of Jotun who welcome him easily, adults, elders and youth alike.
he learns a lot in that short time among them, including the details of how Týr arranged for their sanctuaries, tales about his mom and how beloved she was, and of course the Ragnarok prophecy. he does head back to Midgard eventually, and we're back in canon land.
an extra bit though, is a rite of passage ceremony Jotun do when children reach a certain age, to incite their first prophecy (usually one unheard of before) and officially welcome them into adulthood. Loki mentions it's usually done with their closest living relatives and the oldest Jotun among them leading the ceremony. technically Loki can fill in both roles (can't get any closer than his actual double lmao), but Atreus asks for Kratos to be there. So Grýla and Kratos lead the ceremony, with Loki, Angboda, and their children leading the chants.
it's set to happen late in game, so it's all just heartwarming calm before ethe storm vibes TvT
as for Grýla, she and Angrboda work through their issues prior to the game's timeframe, which is a rather mindfuck cus it's soon after Angrboda left with Týr that her older, more mature and very much married and in love with the Champion of the Jotun show up ajhawbdjh

Nightstand altar is where I hail & worship indoors these days or just keep a comforting light going before sleep. (I used to have to offer a lot indoors at my previous urban residence I shared with people, but being out in the country means I mostly offer and hail outside in the fresh air a lot.)
Deities here:

Youger Futhark - 8th~12th Century
The names of the 16 runes of the Younger futhark are recorded in the Icelandic and Norwegian rune poems. The names are:
ᚠ fé ("wealth")
ᚢ úr ("iron"/"rain")
ᚦ Thurs ("thurs", a type of entity, see jötunn)
ᚬ As/Oss ("(a) god")
ᚱ reið ("ride")
ᚴ kaun ("ulcer")
ᚼ hagall ("hail")
ᚾ/ᚿ nauðr ("need")
ᛁ ísa/íss ("ice")
ᛅ/ᛆ ár ("plenty")
ᛋ/ᛌ sól ("Sun", personified as a deity—see Sól (Germanic mythology))
ᛏ/ᛐ Týr ("Týr, a deity")
ᛒ björk/bjarkan/bjarken ("birch")
ᛘ maðr ("man, human")
ᛚ lögr ("sea")
ᛦ yr ("yew")
From comparison with Anglo-Saxon and Gothic letter names, most of these names directly continue the names of the Elder Futhark runes. The exceptions to this are:
• yr which continues the name of the unrelated Eihwaz rune;
• thurs and kaun, in which cases the Old Norse, Anglo-Saxon and Gothic traditions diverge.

Prayer to Tyr as the protector of democracy
Týr the One-Handed, Oathkeeper, Leavings of the Wolf
Protector of Democracy, Lord of the Thing,
He who upholds justice, even at great cost to himself,
Be with the people of the United States now.
Liberate us from unjust regimes.
Protect us from those who would abuse their power as lawmakers.
Protect the halls of our democracy from those who are fueled by hatred.
Hold our lawmakers to their oaths of office, as you held yourself to your oath to the wolf.
Be with us as we demand our rights as free citizens.
Be with us as we fight for racial justice and an end to police brutality.
Be with us as we strive for something better.
Be with us now, Oathkeeper!
Hail Týr!

☕️ Runes
not fucking sigils
i thought for a long time about leaving it just at that but. hoo boy i have some salt. the power in runes comes from the power of the written word. when you write something down, it manifests. that is the basics of the theoretical basis of runes as magic: the written word as magic.
the vast majority of rune spells are just.. sentences. "Brooch is corpse-protection" and "I invoke hail in the spear." The power comes from the writing it out and the having it written.
There are a few examples of runes themselves having power: 3 ice runes (Sigtuna amulet) or two týr runes (Lay of Sigrdrifa). In these examples, however, they are repetitions of the same rune, not a bindrune of two different ones, though the two týr runes are often a bindrune of two týr runes on top of each other.
There are no examples of a bindrune the way that many people today would understand it. That does not, necessarily mean they dont work. An important thing is though, that they do not derive their power as sigils do. And since they are not, usually, repetitions or a full word, they need to get power from something else, the runes are there to direct the power. The easiest and most historical way to do so is to 'blood' the runes, like the example in Egil's saga:
The saga recounts how Egil cut his hand with his knife, carved runes on the proffered horn, which he smeared with his blood, and then spoke a verse that caused the horn to shatter. (From Runic Amulets and Magic Objects)
In this case, the runes he carved needed both the blood, and the spoken verse, to be used. If you're doing magic using a bindrune in the modern sense, the methods of charging a sigil, in fact charging is the wrong way to think of runes entirely, will not work properly. One need not necessarily use blood, but if you're inexperienced, it is the simplest method.
Additionally, the blooding of the runes is not necessary for divination, since the runes themselves don't need the power in the same fashion that runes used for magic would.
In short. Runes are not godsdamned sigils, thank you for coming to my ted talk

The Rune Poem
Part One: Icelandic Version
(in Modern English)
Wealth source of discord among kinsmen
and fire of the sea
and path of the serpent.
Shower lamentation of the clouds
and ruin of the hay-harvest
and abomination of the shepherd.
Giant torture of women
and cliff-dweller
and husband of a giantess.
God aged Gautr
and prince of Ásgarðr
and lord of Vallhalla.
Riding joy of the horsemen
and speedy journey
and toil of the steed.
Ulcer disease fatal to children
and painful spot
and abode of mortification.
Hail cold grain
and shower of sleet
and sickness of serpents.
Constraint grief of the bond-maid
and state of oppression
and toilsome work.
Ice bark of rivers
and roof of the wave
and destruction of the doomed.
Plenty boon to men
and good summer
and thriving crops.
Sun shield of the clouds
and shining ray
and destroyer of ice.
Týr god with one hand
and leavings of the wolf
and prince of temples.
Birch leafy twig
and little tree
and fresh young shrub.
Man delight of man
and augmentation of the earth
and adorner of ships.
Water eddying stream
and broad geysir
and land of the fish.
Yew bent bow
and brittle iron
and giant of the arrow.

Deity Blurb 03 - Týr
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Týr/Tiw is the Heathen god of justice, law, oathes, victory (especially in battle), the Thing (a traditional legal assembly).
The Skálskaparmál names him as the son of Odin, but in Hymiskviđa Týr is called the son of the jötunn Hymir.
Týr was the only one of the Æsir brave enough to approach and feed Loki's son Fenrir, and the one who sacrificed his hand during the Binding of Fenrir.
The name Týr derives from the proto Indo-European word *deywós, meaning "god" and coming from the root *dyew, meaning "celestial" or "sky." This suggests an ancient association between Týr and dominion of the sky, which now seems to have been lost.
I don't have much experience with Týr, but in my understanding, he is a fierce and compassionate god. He is not afraid to do what is right and will fight for those who have been wronged or dealt injustice. There's a solemness about him, and he keeps his promises, even if they cost him dearly.
Offerings to Týr may include:
wolf scultpure or pendant
beef or ox meat
handmade sword or personalized sword / sword shaped object
one glove
bread, especially if torn in half
coffee
One may decorate an altar to Týr with war, justice, or Fenrir iconography; blue, purple, or white ribbons/buttons/cloths; a daggar or small sword; the rune Tiwaz (ᛏ); symbols of law; candles and incense; an offering plate and cup; ruby, tiger eye, carnelian, or pyrite.
Devotional acts to Týr may include service for your kin or community, compromise and teamwork, accepting responsibility for your actions that have harmed others, assist and humanize those with disabilities, donations or volunteer work at wildlife preserves or animal shelters (especially those that house or rehabilitate wolves), commit to overcoming obstacles/hurdles, and living with a sense of justice and courage to fight for those who have been wronged.
Spellwork calling on Týr could specialize in victory over enemies, overcoming obstacles, due process/justice served, courage, strength, or shadow work.
Hail Týr!

As the soil of Miðgarðr reveals even more of its secrets, the lands now flush with more verdant vistas and flowering feasts for the eyes, and as the sun’s strength waxes each day, the strength of my will waxes in sync and reveals more determination and optimism. May the Æsir and Vanir, or whomever y’all venerate and worship, protect you and encourage you to grow throughout these times, and may Þórr smite illness into oblivion. And may Týr grant justice today to all workers so that we can continue to fight for increased labor rights, a stronger welfare net, and more bargaining rights to fight the bourgeoisie.
