The new Flower Troupe opens! An interview with Yuzuka Rei-san on the highlights of the turbulent love story in the shoujo manga masterpiece "Haikara-san ga Tooru"

In the autumn of 2017, the musical romance "Haikara-san ga Tooru" was performed in two venues in Osaka and Tokyo by Flower Troupe members led by Yuzuka Rei-san. This performance will begin on March 13 (note: due to covid suspensions, the opening day was delayed to July 17), restaged and upgraded as Yuzuka Rei-san and Hana Yuuki-san's debut performance as the Flower Troupe Top Combi. We talk with Yuzuka Rei-san on the highlights and details of her role.

How did you feel when you heard that it was going to be restaged?

When I heard it, I was shocked. Compared to the previous time, the scale of the theatre would be larger, and the stage setup would become more glamorous. Also, all Flower Troupe members will be performing so there will be more performers. Even if it's the same performance but with the environmental change, I couldn't get over the experience and momentum from the previous performance. This is also my first Takarazuka Grand Theatre performance as a Top [Star], so I also feel confused if I would be able to be adjusted to this change.

It's an advantage that I already know the flow of the performance. Above that, I'm thinking more of how to hone the role, how to increase the presence on stage and how not to betray the trust of the audiences who have seen the performance [before].

You're once again playing the second lieutenant Ijuuin Shinobu, have your impression on this role changed?

Previously, I would think that he has an image of someone coming out of the shoujo manga, an admirable prince highness that every woman would dream of. After 2 years and a half, I did realise something new when I have to approach this role again. As Koyanagi-sensei responsible for the script and direction said, even though Ijuuin Shinobu is handsome and a gentle person, he's a man lacking judgment and decision-making power (LOL). That's what makes him more human-like and you can see his charms also in his shortcomings and his immaturity of life.

There's no great change in the storyline, but when I was rehearsing, I would change how I've been acting [the role], and I would have a different interpretation when I act. I've also changed in these 2 years and a half of the time, while connecting to the important lessons I've learnt in this time, I hope to continue delving deep into the role.

You've now become the Top [Star], could you tell us what you imagine the Top Combi to look like with your partner Hana Yuuki-san?

The greatest change I've felt was "how people have been seeing us". Even in rehearsal classrooms, I know that people have been watching me, observing me and trying to understand how I'm feeling. So in the stance that I'm being seen, I would think about the impact of my behaviour in my words and actions.

Also, with my partner Hana Yuuki, compared to the relationship between Takarazuka Revue's otokoyaku and musumeyaku, I want to treasure the ambience of the relationship that only Hana Yuuki and I can create. As a colleague also in the performing arts industry and as a stage performer, I hope that she could still solidly be herself, but that our relationship [as a combi] for the two of us would not lose sight to others, and we could also aim high together.

Thanks for the ask! Actually, I do plan to make some posts about my anime OTPs. As you can see how much I loved anime, most of the OTPs I loved are from anime series so here are some:

HAK x YONA (Akatsuki no Yona)

I really love the relationship between these two. They're childhood friends, Yona is a princess and Hak is one of the generals of their kingdom. Hak was already in love with Yona since they were young but decided not to confess to her because of their statuses. What I love the most about them is their antics. Hak is quite a bully and since he's already close to Yona since they were kids despite being the princess, he can pretty much tell her whatever he wanted to say, except for the fact that he loves her. Their relationship is already developing in the latest chapters of the manga but let's not talk about spoilers. (￣▽￣*)ゞ

MONKEY D. LUFFY x BOA HANCOCK (One Piece)

This is definitely not canon. But I really love their interactions and how Boa is head over heels for Luffy. Imagine these two having their own kids. Maybe they'll be able to use the emperor's haki at a very young age. LOL

If you're gonna ask me, I wanted an episode where Sanji will realize that Boa loves Luffy and will get jealous again just like how he reacted with Zoro and Hiyori. (Oh, and I do ship Zoro and Hiyori too)

HORI MASAYUKI x KASHIMA YUU (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)

GSNK is one of my favorite anime romcoms of all time. And my favorite couple is Hori and Kashima. They have this very funny senpai-kouhai relationship and they are both members of the same club. Hori really loves Kashima's face and finds her very handsome while Kashima thinks that Hori wants to be a princess and wanted to treat him as one. Unfortunately, there are very few moments in the anime so I had to read the manga.

NIFUJI HIROTAKA x MOMOSE NARUMI & KABAKURA TAROU x KOYANAGI HANAKO (Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii)

Otaku couples! Who wouldn't love them? If ever I get into a relationship, I'd like for my partner to at least like anime so we can watch anime together. Hahaha. Okay, enough about me. Going back to these couples, they really are fun to watch. They would bicker and fight just like any normal couple would do but their relationship also showcases their love for anime and games. I won't even get tired of watching these couples all day.

AOI ASHITO x ICHIJOU HANA (Ao Ashi)

I don't usually ship any couples in sports anime because duh, the highlight should be the sports. Hahaha. Who am I kidding?? At least, that's it for me. But the story of these two high school students really gets to me. Hana became the very first fan of Ashito because he reminds her of her first love and favorite player. Hana is very supportive of Ashito and they were already on a first-name basis at the beginning of the story. Whenever Ashito is feeling lost, even if Hana doesn't understand anything about soccer, she always manages to find the right words to say to him. For me, the author did a great job of developing the relationship between these two in the story. This couple is not yet canon but I do believe they will be as I am also updated in the manga. Oops. Spoilers. XD

AKABOSHI BISCO x NEKOYANAGI MILO (Sabikui Bisco)

I do ship these two but I guess not too much in a romantic sense but in a platonic sense? I watched the anime and read until the 2nd volume of the light novel. And with that, I can really tell how much these two care for each other. They're partners and even promised to be together until their last breaths. The way they are both willing to sacrifice themselves for one another, their banters, their interactions. everything. Everything is just so precious! This is not canon but, oh well. I can really see that they love each other even if not in a romantic sense.

And that's about it! I still have other OTPs but these are some I remembered almost instantly. Sorry, you had to read a very long post, Elaine. As you may have noticed, my favorite couples are not really some of the most shipped by fandoms. Maybe, I just do have a weird taste. ( ◡‿◡ *)

for the stan ask, i stan Narumi Momose and Hanako from Wotakoi Love is difficult for Otaku, and also Chise and Silky from The Ancient Magus' Bride

6/10 for Narumi Momose. I absolutely love Wotakoi to bits and pieces, and Narumi’s a pretty good protagonist and I love her romance with Hirotaka, but her continued fetishization of gay men is pretty predatory and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. Hers and Hana’s participation in “fujoshi culture” are the only stain on an otherwise flawless series.

As for the Ancient Magus bride, unfortunately I can’t rate that. I tried watching the first episode of the anime, but it made me so extremely uncomfortable that I dropped it completely and blacklisted the tag. No judgement on you or anyone else who likes it though! It’s just not my cup of tea and I’d rather not see any content for it :)

Bleach Live Action- My Thoughts

I really liked it! The first arc was adapted quite well from manga to film, especially considering that there’s a lot to cover in that arc. The action and fight scenes were also really cool and well-choreographed, particularly the Ichigo vs. Renji fight. That was so badass and awesome!

Now for characters:

Fukushi Sota was really good as Ichigo. He had that punk-like attitude, that hidden heart of gold, and he was definitely quite handsome as well. I really like how he portrayed Ichigo, I thought it was faithful to the manga. As for Rukia, Sugisaki Hana was adorable, honestly. Sure, her hair was very different, but I thought it was cute. I enjoyed seeing her interactions with Ichigo, it was almost like they were brother and sister. It perfectly captured what Kubo portrayed in the manga, that mentor-student like bond. Sugisaki had said in an interview that Rukia views Ichigo like how a mother would view her son, and I could see touches of that, honestly. Their friendship was done quite well in the movie.

Mano Erina was super gorgeous as Orihime. Like, a total babe. Her daydreaming about Ichigo’s grumpy face was so cute! And that scene when she smiles at Ichigo and he smiles back, it was really sweet! And Koyanagi Yu was also great as Chad! I hope we get to see more of them in the potential sequel! Same with Tanabe Seiichi as Urahara, he played the shady shopkeeper quite well! As for Ishida, Yoshizawa Ryo was really good! He wasn’t as cold as he is in the manga, but he was pretty cool!

With Ichigo’s family, Eguchi Yosuke was a perfect Isshin. He had that rugged look and a slight silliness that didn’t distract from his seriousness at all. And I don’t know who played Karin and Yuzu, but they were just adorable. As for Masaki, played by Nagasawa Masami, she was just as beautiful.

And here comes my fangirl side...

RENJI AND BYAKUYA WERE THE HOTTEST AND THE BEST IN THE WHOLE MOVIE OH MY GOD!

Ahem... anyways, Renji and Byakuya are my two favourite characters in the manga, and seeing their live action selves had me weak. Saotome Taichi was so, so hot! His Renji was perfect! I loved his smirk, that Squad 11-like fighting frenzy, his hair (gorgeous hair, might I add!), and even the way he talked! As for the tattoos, they looked so cool and badass! Sure, not exactly what they looked like in canon, but those tattoos were still awesome! And Byakuya... Miyavi was the perfect Byakuya! He was cold, ruthless, harsh, and so utterly peerless. He captured that otherworldly aura that Byakuya has in canon, and played the role of the stoic noble clan head so well! Also, his piercings are super hot, and the way the kenseikan worked in this movie is also pretty interesting. 

As I mentioned, the fight scenes were well-choreographed and real fun to watch. The Ichigo and Ishida tag-team was fun to watch, and so was the Ichigo vs. Renji fight. Also, the soundtrack was really well-done, Yamada Yutaka did a great job with the score. The rock music was awesome, and perfectly in tune with the original series.

Special effects were quite good as well, honestly. I really liked how the Hollows were done, they looked quite creepy, particularly the Grand Fisher; Ishida’s Quincy bow was also really cool to watch. As for the Zanpakuto, Renji’s Zabimaru was super cool, and very faithful to canon! It was too bad we didn’t get to see Ichigo’s Zangetsu or Byakuya’s Senbonzakura in action, but let’s hope we get to see them in a possible sequel! As for that brief glimpse of Soul Society and the Seireitei... well, it looks so cool! I seriously hope that a sequel is made, I really want to see Live-Action Soul Society!

Overall, the Bleach Live Action movie is so good! Bleach fans should definitely check it out, and same goes for fans of Renji and Byakuya. I promise you’ll love it!
