TRAINER
“oh! And have a play-tastic day, friend!”
Tumblr media
Eeee look at the silly guy!! Trainer !!
This silly fella is super chill and wouldn’t ever have the want to hurt anyone unless he seriously had to :] he’s about 6”7 and is probably one of the sweetest people in the factory, a more “human-height” bigger-body who was used as a employee helper :D
he became super lonely after everyone “suddenly” disappeared.. don’t know what that was about!
(more about him under the cut!)
He was pretty much the company’s attempt at making a mascot to clean up controversy within worker gossip, his whole job was to train employees, both on how to use grabpacks and obey the company handbook! He’s very kind, and is kind of a doormat- and could be considered a danger if agitated but for the most part he’s very kind and acts almost “customer service-ish” and forced with everyone he meets unless he finally gets a chance to be vulnerable, then thats when hes a lot more deadpan and quiet.
Employees mistreated him from time to time, and his little buddy (a CatBee named London) would either stick up for him or try to help him emotionally as London too has been mistreated by staff time and time again.. London also understands Trainer’s interest in a worker (Simon) coming back to the factory- London personally doesn’t know how to feel about them, but London figures if Trainer has a good feeling with somebody, it must mean something could be right. <:]
he also was good friends with Poppy before the hour of joy happened, and he ended up being thrown into a storage closet by employees trying to stop other bigger-bodies from killing off people even though Trainer had no idea what was happening, and was scared too.
He very often writes on walls, and in all kinds of areas for signals if anyone finds them so that way maybe he can find alive staff or even just try to figure out a way to meet more calm, less hostile people as he’s mostly in the first half of the factory (in slight fear that he might get hurt while wandering too far)
he was one of the company’s better-functioning experiments, being how smart he is and all with being able to talk and having good motor function :]
He looks up to Huggy- or at least the Idea of him..
Trainer is heavily based off of the songs:
Slave to the factory line - DA games
Welcome home - APangrypiggy (I love these artists personally)
anyways, secrets in the art, enjoy my little guy
he is also available to be a character to be asked for the AU as well!!

talk to us about Charon worship, Herakles worship, or Hera worship-- three figures that get very little attention in polytheistic spaces compared to ones like the internet's darling Hermes
OH BOY WOULD I LOVE TO!! thank you for the ask <333 im so excited i gotta do all three of them and pray i dont hit character limit again LMAO HERAKLES: there's two main things that draw me to herakles: 1) his liminal nature. he's both given these divine tasks from literal birth (the snakes in his crib) but is also so deeply human. he's suffered devastating things, and yet, he keeps going, he perseveres. is he worshipped as a mortal hero or as one of the divine? there's evidence for BOTH in antiquity (see oxford handbook of herakles chapter 33 for more). herakles is often an aggressive figure, and through his labors, it can be seen as him 'taming' the wilds and being a helper to society. it's such an interesting juxtaposition and its hard for me to articulate it because of just how deep it runs. 2) herakles lives out every mystai's dream. he's an initiate of the eleusinian mysteries, has been to hyperborea, and he earns apotheosis and a life with the gods, forever in their company. i look up to that. this doesn't even mention all his other adventures outside of his labors! he's got so much going on, and it's all fascinating. herakles has a lot to do with protection, masculinity, athleticism, and averting evil. upg wise, i worship him as an example of someone to look up to -- despite all the things he's been through and the impossible tasks facing him, he's determined and never gives up and asks the gods for help (side note: his relationship with athena is so interesting). i find that he gives me courage and is just a fun and protective presence to be around. if anyone is interested in him, i highly suggest oxford handbook of herakles. fantastic book. CHARON: honestly, charon is a newer figure in my worship, so i don't have a ton of particular sources to share about him. i like that he's a friendly face to the end. i think a lot about the inherent verbal pun of 'khaire kharon' based on how similar the two words are and greeting the ferryman as a friend. there's something to me about his hardworking nature. upg wise, i like to collect my spare change for him and put it in a little dish as an offering. not just for me, but to pay it forward for anyone who might not have anything to pay him with for their ferry. i just find him to be a really interesting figure tbh and im excited to develop my relationship with him more. HERA: oh boy oh boy where do i start with our lovely queen of the gods. i love the orphic association with her and winds -- thinking about how that pairs with father zeus and his storms endlessly delights me, a cosmic dance from the king and queen. her relationship with zeus fascinates me endlessly. they both get a lot of shit on this site, but in cult, they were considered to be deeply in love (theogamia, daedala, their epithets gamelia/gamelii). hera is the keeper of father zeus' oikos (household). she is the one who decides if who gets to join the oikos and who doesn't (much of her persecution of zeus' children without her can be interpreted as her deciding who and who is not worthy of being in her oikos). in cult, she was often revered as an all-mother figure, especially in argos and samos, and i love that interpretation of her. she's a very complex figure, and i love that about her. i love her role in women's lives. i think a lot about her epithets pais, teleia, khera (girl, married woman, widow [from when she separated from zeus for a period of time]). no matter where you are in your life, hera will be there for you. i find that very comforting. upg wise, i pray to her about just about anything. i find she's always a comforting and listening ear. i like to pray to her about my relationships, given her marriage related epithets. i find that she gives me confidence and courage to stand up for myself like she does, to carry myself in the world with grace. i just really like her okay thank you SO much for this ask, this was an absolute treat to talk about. i genuinely appreciate it so much, gods be with you always and bless you

Sir John Boardman
Archaeologist who became a leading authority on the history of Greek art, with a particular interest in gems and finger rings
As a student, John Boardman, who has died aged 96, was able to recite by heart texts in Attic Greek, the form of the language used in ancient Athens. But while studying classics at Magdalene College, Cambridge, he encountered two archaeologists whose work encouraged him to apply that flair to the study of classical objects: Charles Seltman showed him coins, and Robert Cook vases.
To these he added carved gems, sculpture and architecture, on all of which he became a leading authority, and the author of more than 30 books.
On graduating in 1948, he took Cook’s advice not to study for a doctorate, but to go to Greece and do some research there. At the British School in Athens for the next two years, as well as travelling to destinations including Crete and Smyrna, he worked in the depths of the Athens National Museum on vases from the island of Euboea (the modern Evvia).
The diagnostic pot shape that he identified enabled later archaeologists and historians to track the paths of Greeks and Greek culture to the east – Al Mina in Syria – and the west – Pithecusae, today’s Ischia, in the gulf of Naples – and at many points between.
The Greek islands and the diaspora around the Mediterranean came to be recurring themes in Boardman’s work. In 1964 he published two books, The Greeks Overseas: Their Early Colonies and Trade, and Greek Art, both of which went on to further editions.
On his first visit to Greece he met Sheila Stanford, an artist, and after he had completed his national service in the Intelligence Corps (1950-52) they married in Britain. He then returned to the British School as assistant director (1952-55), and was given his own dig, on the island of Chios.
His party of excavators and helpers there included Michael Ventris, the architect who shortly aftewards announced his decipherment of the Linear B syllabic script as an early form of the Greek language, and Dilys Powell, the eventual film critic of the Sunday Times.
Back in Britain, Boardman served as an assistant keeper at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (1955-59). Its Cast Gallery, containing plaster casts of some 900 Greek and Roman sculptures, became his preferred academic home base, and he published a catalogue of its Cretan collection (1961).
Working on another, private, collection of art objects in the 1990s gave him ideas about world art, its interconnections and aims. This led him to distinguish three main “belts”: a northern one, running from Siberia to North America, where nomads favoured small items, often depicting animals; an urban one, from China to central America, more given to monumental architecture; and a tropical one characterised by human forms, notably of ancestors. He explored these ideas in The World of Ancient Art (2006).
Other publications included Greek Gems and Finger Rings (1970); handbooks on Athenian black-figure and red-figure vases (1974 and 1975); a lecture series given at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and published as The Diffusion of Classical Art in Antiquity (1994); Persia and the West (2000); The Archaeology of Nostalgia: How the Greeks Re-created Their Mythical Past (2002); numerous catalogues, particularly of gem collections, including the royal one at Windsor Castle; and excavation reports from Chios and from Tocra, in Libya.
After the Ashmolean appointment came university posts at Oxford, as reader in classical archaeology (1959-78) and then Lincoln professor of classical archaeology and art (1978-94). As professor emeritus, he continued to work from offices first in the Ashmolean and subsequently the classics faculty’s Ioannou Centre.
In 2020 he produced his autobiography, A Classical Archaeologist’s Life: The Story So Far. The last of its three parts focuses on a field of “minor” art that he showed could be anything but: Greek and Roman gems and finger rings. Called simply “Gems, Bob and Claudia”, it details the work that Boardman did first with the photographer Bob Wilkins and later an archivist of the Beazley Archive, in Oxford, Claudia Wagner. With her he co-authored Masterpieces in Miniature: Engraved Gems from Prehistory to the Present (2018).
Born in Ilford, Essex, John was the son of Clara (nee Wells), who had been a milliner’s assistant, and Arch (Frederick) Boardman, a clerk in the City. The family was not academic, but John was impressed by what he saw at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum when he visited them with his father, who died when John was 11.
While at Chigwell school, John experienced second world war aerial bombardment, of which he later had vivid memories. He found the study of Greek to be “magical”, and the school’s headteacher encouraged him to apply for a scholarship at his former Cambridge college.
Though his own career developed at a time when a doctorate was not obligatory, Boardman went on to supervise vast numbers of graduate students, scattered over several continents. He had an extraordinarily acute and retentive visual memory, was prodigiously efficient and well organised in his teaching – his lectures on Greek architecture and sculpture were a revelation – as in his research and writing, and welcomed the assistance provided by digital technology.
I first met him in his Ashmolean office, in 1969, keen for him to be my doctoral supervisor. Almost the first word he uttered was “Sparta”: not long before, he had published an account vastly improving on previous understanding of the sand, earth and relative dating of the artefacts found at the Artemis Orthia sanctuary site there. Like many others, I appreciated his meticulous standards of archaeological observation and historical interpretation.
Boardman once wrote that he felt more at home intellectually outside Oxford, indeed outside Britain, and he was involved with and recognised by institutions in Ireland, mainland Europe, the US and Australia. For almost three decades he was on the board of the Basel-based Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae (1972-99).
His activities in Britain were still considerable. He edited the Journal of Hellenic Studies (1958-65) and was a delegate of the Oxford University Press (1979-89). At the Royal Academy in London from 1989 onwards he occupied what had originally been Edward Gibbon’s seat of professor of ancient history. He was made a fellow of the British Academy in 1969, and knighted in 1986.
While ready to express a view in serious academic controversies he was resolutely apolitical. Nonetheless, he took the view that Lord Elgin’s dubiously acquired collection of sculptures from the Parthenon and other structures in Athens purchased by the UK in 1816 should remain in its entirety under the curation of the British Museum Trustees.
He received a lot of support from the publishers Thames & Hudson, and his very last publication came in the month of his death, in their Pocket Perspectives series. John Boardman on the Parthenon is a lightly illustrated repackaging of the lively text he had composed to accompany the black and white photographs of David Finn in the same publisher’s The Parthenon and Its Sculptures (1985).
Sheila died in 2005. He is survived by their children, Julia and Mark.

“The flame burns bright (but your love burns brighter)” Farmed with the help of Kenyuu Yukimiya!
You and Kenyu have been stuck together ever since you two found out about each others existence— some even say that you two never seem to let go of the other no matter what. So when Kenyu tells you about his eye condition, that shouldn't make a difference, right?
“Racing to your heart.” Farmed with the help of Hyoma Chigiri!
You and Chigiri are rivals, enemies, nemeses— or so you claim, really it's all one sided since he doesn't even know you exist. But, his lack of knowledge of you became so much more apparent the moment you two were paired up for a project.
Tumblr media
This just in; ˗ˏˋ Ohagiyo ˎˊ˗ makes a switch from a fanfic writer to an orange farmer !

I made some spreadsheets. The image above compares the probability of "success" in daggerheart's 2d12 system vs a d20. Here, I am making the assumption that a crit is an automatic success.
The "effective DC" refers not to the actual DC, but the DC minus any modifiers, i.e. the value the player must roll to meet the threshold.
As expected, the probability distribution for 2d12 is much less simple, with diminishing returns on ability bonuses. A simple +1 modifier bonus can sway the odds by almost 8% if the DC is around 14, but less than 2% for DC around 23. This makes me feel like ability bonuses will be more valuable early in the game, but less important as the game gets to higher levels.
On a side note, I was pretty surprised to see exact 50% and 25% for DC 14 and DC 18, respectively, in the 2d12 system, and how it lines up with the 50% and 25% lines in the d20 system.
Anyway, I am excited for this game, and I hope Darrington Press makes a starter pack similar to the ones for DND and Pathfinder 2e.
Side Note: As a fan of the Handbooker Helper, I hope they'll make ones for Daggerheart one day.

Hello, Blog Runners.
Welcome to the Rotomblr blog for The Midsommar Sanctuary. We have created this blog in order to make appropriate updates and notices in an easier, more effective format. However, we will also be making informative posts. Feel free to reach out via the “Ask Here” button at the top of the page for any questions you would like answered.
The sanctuary’s mission is to help Pokémon thrive, expand conservation efforts, and teach others about Pokémon and their importance to our world & history. We do this with our Pokémon helpers, having conservation areas, rooms to learn about their biology and history, and our greenhouses. We also help with Galar-wide Pokémon emergencies, our Founder & Owner and Battle Professor always on-call to help the rangers.
Tumblr media
We have multiple exhibits, including:
The Valley Exhibit
aka the main exhibit! this conservatory hosts a very wide variety of pokémon, and has information on every pokémon you can find (that doesn’t fit within the specified exhibits). definitely our most popular one for a reason.
The Bug Exhibit
the home to bug types and their cute lil quirks! a brilliant place to learn about them, and watch them in an exhibit that mimics their natural habitat. it’s specially dedicated to their studies, needs and wants - and a great place for those who may be scared of bug pokémon, as it provides a safe and contained environment to watch them.
The Aquarium Exhibit
for our beautiful water dwellers! an amazing place to learn about our sea friends, and pride ourselves in their amazing exhibit and care. there are tanks with our friendlier pokémon around to pat and interact with, including kid-safe ones!
The Fossil Exhibit
the home to a wide variety of fossil specimens, within rooms meant to replicate the rugged dirt they were found in. for those who enjoy the ancient side of things, or just want a break from the pokémon-filled sections. although we do have a fossil conservatory, for the fossils we saved from the liss incident — and are given the best care we can possibly give them.
The Hisui Exhibit
the most recent addition, and the sanctuary’s biggest pride and joy! with the report of more hisuian pokémon being unfortunately dumped due to their tough care needs, we thought it was best to give them a safe place to be themselves and to get the care they deserve. there are also informative handbooks, written by specialists within the hisui topic!
Tumblr media
Other locations include:
Lecture Hall
once a week, one of our esteemed professors - sometimes even the owner, as he’s a professor himself - will host a lecture. they last 30 minutes, and are quite informative. they are free to attend and will always be on a saturday lunch!
Midsommar Jungle Café
a good place to rest and restore yourself! with a wide variety of food and drink options, you’re sure to find something you enjoy. and if you just want to sit down and rest, that’s fine too - there is a designated area for that!
Gift Shop
want a fun little souvenir, some special memory-holders or just a silly birthday or christmas present? well your in luck, as our gift shop has a large collection of merchandise and tid bits! all profits go directly to the sanctuary, which supports our hard working staff and our pokémon cared for.
Tumblr media
This blog is primarily run by the sanctuary’s owner, Prof. Hop Laventon, but may be used by our other top Professors — Prof. Sonia Flora & Prof. Oxi Morre — to provide information as well. They will sign off with their names, to avoid any possible confusion. All information about The Professors and any other staff are on the sanctuary’s website.
If you would like to learn more, you can look at the website for more information — including the exhibits, conservation efforts and donations. If you have any questions, you can reach out via either the website’s help feature or this blog’s DMs. Everyone is welcome to interact, we simply ask that you are respectful.
Thank you for reading, and have a good day.

0034: Slightly off the beaten path bonus: Amazing Spider-Man Annual #2
Cover Date: 1965 On-Sale Date: June 1, 1965
Tumblr media
Travelling outside of Strange Tales for a moment, we go to Ditko's and Lee's more famous creation, Spider-Man. Doc and Spidey finally get to meet and it's more than three panels of Doc's ghost breaking up a fracas between Pete and Flash. While the book's cover advertises the story's title. Doc himself is nowhere to found on it. While I'm sure Spidey was selling far more books at this time, I doubt an image of Doc would have lowered sales. The cover is unimaginative with some imaged of our star in various poses against a yellow background. The splash page, however, is quite delicious.
After a lovely splash of Spidey amidst Ditko weirdness and Doc and Xandu duking it out in the background, our main story begins with Spidey flitting about a peaceful New York City feeling about "as useful as a can of dinosaur repellant." The peaceful status can't remain for long because the only luck Pete has is bad luck and he's always got be down and out. It wasn't as bad back in the old days as it is now, but Petey never gets ahead.
We change scene to man walking by a bar with several of the patrons being thrown THROUGH the door. We know this because Ditko draws us several pieces of it flying along side the unlucky dudes. Our mystery man walks into the bar. He seems to have found what he's looking for. On a side note, this bar seems entirely patronized by men. Our mystery man makes the two men still standing an offer. What the hell was Ditko trying to imply here?
The two very well built ruffian dudes, with crew cuts and tight shirts (really Ditko?) politely refuse the offer with a warm "Git lost creep!" The one dressed like The Sandman (that's the Flint Marko one, not the dreamlord one) reiterates his polite refusal when he realizes the mystery guest is still present. And we finally see what the dude looks like.
Tumblr media
Seriously?! A monocle AND a funky mustache AND a funky goatee?! This one's straight out of the generic super-villains handbook. His offer of work is met with Maynard G. Krebs level of refusal and they both crack up! (They look a little alike. Were they meant to be brothers or cousins?)
Tumblr media
Our well muscled ruffians' mental capacity doesn't quite match their muscles. Xandu (we've finally learned his name) hypnotizes them with little effort. Ditko fills the next page with Xandu having his new helpers demonstrate what beasts they are. They then follow him home. I guess Xandu's Grindr profile says he takes in-calls.
Once at his magic-y hideout, Xandu explains the mission to the trouble twins. I'm not sure why since they're hypnotized and won't understand. Lee and Ditko do love their characters to spout out exposition to no one. While this is going on we get to see Xandu in his full splendiferous costume. Holy crap, it's green! What is it with Ditko and his green coded villains?
The TDLR of this is Xandu has half a wand and Doc has the other half. Whoever has both is all powerful. "Now, my lovely little muscle bears, it's up to you to steal the other half from Doc and make me the true, big bad!" He sends them out with a big pair of eyes hovering over them. I supposed it's a bit less obvious than Mordo's giant, floating head. You'll notice the muscle bear not dressed like the Sandman has acquired a fetching gold pouch hanging from his neck. It's not explained and disappears later on with no clue as to it's whereabouts.
Tumblr media
Doc, while attempting to extract magical secrets from an ancient borsht recipe, is surprised by the sudden arrival of a pair of well muscled strangers. There isn't evidence they broke in, so maybe Doc is still failing to lock his doors. Or maybe they did break in and Doc was so hungry for magic borsht he wasn't paying attention to loud banging and cracking. Whatever they case, Doc's about to have his butt handed to him. Doc attempts his tried and true lots of fake Docs illusion, but Xandu's creepy floating eyes see through it.
Tumblr media
This is honestly rather embarrassing for one of the world's foremost sorcerers. But it is what it is. The bears smash cabinets until they find the other half of the wand and take their leave, via the roof. By a fortunate coincidence, Spidey happens to be swinging by. Peter may be a genius, but his knowledge of architecture is limited as he calls a dormer, a skylight.
Tumblr media
Ditko then has the muscle bears engage with Spidey for a couple of pages and they proceed to mop the floor with him as well. They even tear apart his webbing. Never fear! Spidey has put one of his patent pending spidey-tracers on one of the bears and can track them back to the gay bar Xandu's secret hideout.
Tumblr media
Back at base, Xandu has assembled the Wand of Watoomb and can begin his mustache twirling in earnest. Xandu starts playing with his new toy by opening a bunch of Ditko portals.
Tumblr media
He spends the rest of the page looking in on Doc and causing more property damage in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Spidey has tracked him down and is about to confront Xandu. He's inside Xandu's hideout. Xandu doesn't seem to be any more security conscious than Doc. Anyone and everyone gets in. Xandu immediately starts to blast away at Spidey using the wand and has stormtrooper accuracy. Spidey, being a practical bug webs Xandu's face. Xandu drops the wand and whines about not being able to see. Not taking this lying down, he spouts an ominous spell and we get our first invocation of Satannish. Our supremely powerful hell lord won't show up in person for a couple of years, but he gets his first mention here.
Another Ditko portal opens and starts to gobble up our web-slinger. Spidey is still in practical mode and figures he needs some insurance to make sure Xandu comes and gets him. All accompanied by the usual Spidey wit. Spidey should have been in 8-Mile!
Tumblr media
Ditko obviously took a great deal of effort and pleasure in the next panel. It's wonderful, just like the title of this story.
Tumblr media
The trouble bears soon follow to retrieve the wand and hilarity ensues. Meanwhile, back at the Sanctum, Doc has finally regained consciousness. He uses the All-Purpose Amulet to track down his assailants. He's about to confront Xandu who is helpfully guiding his thugs get the wand back from Spidey in the other dimension. No longer having the element of surprise, Doc start to pummel Xandu. Just in time, another Ditko portal opens with the Spidey and his pair of muscle bear dancing partners. Xandu grabs the wand from Spidey changing the balance of power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now Doc is up a creek and he knows it.
Tumblr media
Doc flies away to give him some time and goes ghost. He finds Spidey who is still being menaced by the bears. Doc has great idea! "Spidey, why don't you electrocute them?" Using a conveniently located loose, live wire, Spidey does just that. Amazingly, this doesn't kill the pair. Instead they are free from Xandu and really, really tired!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trouble bears go off to rest, or go into a k-hole and Spidey is free to help Doc. Spidey goes back to Xandu's hideout and Doc gets physical again and follows. Doc and Spidey use a two-pronged magical and physical attack to throw Xandu off balance.
Tumblr media
Doc manages to knock the wand out of Xandu's hands while Spidey webs them up to prevent him from getting it back.
Tumblr media
Doc drains the wand, claiming the threat of Watoomb exists no more. The wand somehow gets its power back and returns in the future. For good measure, Doc gives Xandu's mind a non-consensual mind probe to find out how he got his half of the wand and then wipe his mind. This also doesn't last as Xandu, monocle, mustache, goatee and all will return multiple times to menace both Spidey and Strange. Doc pledges his eternal friendship to Spidey and departs. Spidey has a clever quip of his own.
Tumblr media
This is a great team-up! Ditko's two characters finally come together. It's Spidey's magazine and his story, but Doc has an equal role, unlike his previous crossovers with the Fantastic Four and Thor where he was more of a background plot device.
Placing this in Doc's timeline is a little difficult. It was published during the Dormammu/Mordo arc and there isn't much room for a side adventure between those installments. Doc's cloak still has the red border so it should be before Strange Tales #136.
Xandu starts out as a formidable villain. He's equally arrogant as Doc, isn't afraid to use his abilities and doesn't hold back. Sadly, like most Marvel villains who aren't Doctor Doom, Xandu becomes more of a buffoon with each subsequent appearance.
Overall, I think Ditko really enjoyed plotting and penciling this installment and the love shows through. He doesn't take any obvious artistic shortcuts. The story is tight and there is very little "why the hell did he do that?" going on. There is on unfortunate Doc characteristic pervading this story. There are no women! Spidey doesn't even pass a female on the street. Ah, well. Maybe my bear jokes were a bit closer to reality than I suspected. It's fun. Enjoy this one!

I was thinking about the Bugul-Noz tonight and lo and behold the two citation wikipedia page has been updated with nothing of the original left. How could this happen I wondered to myself 3 hours ago. The answer is a single neo-pagan making shit up in a 1994 book, and the eternal (low) barrier of foreign languages (french).

Bugul Noz
Appearance and Temperament: The Bugul Noz is hideously ugly, a fact he seems to find most distressing. He is one-of-a-kind, said to be the last of his race. Time Most Active: All year. Lore: The Bugul Noz is sadly aware of his repulsive appearance and will call out a warning to humans before he appears so as not to take them too much by surprise. He is a loner who is rarely seen.
Magickal and Ritual Help: Undetermined. So many people flee from the Bugul Noz that it is not known what help he might be in magick and ritual. Being of the earth he may offer help with spells of fertility and prosperity. He is desperately lonely and would most likely offer you anything he can in return for your company and compassion.

Others, such as trolls and thick-set goblins, are defined by their ugliness: a human being dies on spying the repulsive Bugul Noz, who dwells deep within the Breton woodland. Encyclopedia of fairies in world folklore and mythology- Theresa Bane 2013
In Breton fairy mythology Bugul-Noz (“Night Shepherd”) is a tall and alarming NATURE SPIRIT living in the rural forests of Brittany. The last of his kind, this fairy is desperately lonely; he is so hideous and ugly the animals of the woods avoid him and will flee when he approaches. Aware of his frightful visage the gentle and kind Bugul- Noz is considerate enough to call out as he wanders the woodlands during twilight, least he surprise a person and frighten them to death. Bugul-Noz is a sort of NURSERY BOGIE for adults, as he is said to appear at dusk, a time when adults should quit their work for the day and head back to their homes; once indoors, they can lock themselves in and safely rest and sleep.
Ford's Faeries: A Bestiary- The G+ OSR Community 2018
Bugul Noz, the Dark Shepherd, is the son of an ancient hero and a forgotten goddess of death. Half guardian angel, half bogeyman, he wanders the countryside. Sometimes, he’s a black wolf attacking those who wandered too far into the woods. Sometimes, he’s a swarm of ravens swooping down on farmers just before dusk. Sometimes, he’s a tall shepherd in a black suit and black hat kidnapping lost children.
But the Shepherd is not as evil as one would think. He just wants to prepare people for an incoming threat: a gang of murderous bandits, an army of orcs, or just a very harsh winter. In his way, he is saying “don’t go alone in the woods!” and “take care of your children!” until villagers sharpen their weapons, call for heroes, or just hide out of sight for a while. He keeps roaming around the land until he's defeated or until the great threat arrives.
When defeated, Bugul Noz doesn’t die. He reverts to his true form: a black cyclops, his horns like raven beaks, his body covered by black fur, a shepherd staff in his hand. As a reward, he gives a powerful, or just instrumental item that can be used to fight the incoming threat. This usually comes with a vision of the impending doom, because the Dark Shepherd doesn’t speak. After that, he leaves to warn another community from another danger.
A dictionary of symbols- Jean Chevalier 1996
Shout[...]It also survives in Breton folklore in the hoper noz (night-crier), c’hwitellour noz (night-whistler) or, in the region of Vannes, bugul-noz (night-child or -shepherd), whose shout leads travellers astray.
Dictionary of Celtic Mythology- James MacKillop 1998
bugelnoz- [breton, night imp, goblin] A supernatural creature in Breton folklore, known in the region of Vannes in south-central Brittany. He appears between midnight and morning to rescue victims from the devil by spreading his mouth over them.
A face of clay: an interpretation- Horace Annesley Vachell 1906
His sister has heard it calling, 'Ion — Ion —lou!'" "You believe that?""Why, of course. It is the voice of Bugul Noz, the shepherd of the night.
Lantec, it will be remembered, was Furic's patron, who had been drowned. According to Breton superstitions he had become one of the innumerable, unshriven, unburied dead — a Bugul Noz. Furic started. "It is not Lantec who mocks me," he answered. Then he hooted in imitation of the uneasy spirit: "lou—Iou — lou ! " "You heard an owl," said T^hany calmly. "An owl. Mademoiselle? No. It was — no matter. Bugul Noz mocks me, but if I mock in return I shall be killed." Tephany nodded. Furic seemed to be curiously excited. T^phany endeavoured to soothe the savage ■<a'eature.
For the moment, doubtless, his dist6rted vision was preoccupied with the owl, whom he took to be Bugul Noz, U herger de la nuit.
Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries- W.Y. Evan Wentz 1911
Further, I suppose there should be included in the class of male fairies that Bugul-Noz, that mysterious Night Shepherd, whose tall and alarming outline the rural Bretons see rising in the twilight, if, by chance, they happen to return late from field-work. I have never been able to obtain exact information about the kind of herd which he fed, nor about what was foreboded by the meeting with him. Most often such a meeting is dreaded. Yet, as one of my female informants, Lise Bellec, reasonably pointed out, if it is preferable to avoid the Bugut-Noz it does not from that follow that he is a harmful spirit. According to her, he would rather fulfil a beneficial office, in warning human beings, by his coming, that night is not made for lingering in the fields or on the roads, but for shutting oneself in behind closed doors and going to sleep. This shepherd of the shades would then be, take it altogether, a kind of good shepherd. It is to ensure our rest and safety, to withdraw us from excesses of toil and the snares of night, that he compels us, thoughtless sheep, to return quickly to the fold.
No doubt it is an almost similar protecting office which, in popular belief, has fallen to another male fairy, more particularly attached to the seashore, as his name, Yann-An-Od, indicates. There is not, along all the coast of Brittany or, as it is called, in all the Armor, a single district where the existence of this ‘John of the Dunes’ is not looked on as a real fact, fully proved and undeniable. Changing forms and different aspects are attributed to him. Sometimes he is a giant, sometimes a dwarf. Sometimes he wears a seaman’s hat of oiled cloth, sometimes a broad black felt hat. At times he leans on an oar and recalls the enigmatic personage, possessed of the same attribute, whom Ulysses has to follow, in the Odyssey. But he is always a marine hero whose office it is to traverse the shores, uttering at intervals long piercing cries, calculated to frighten away fishermen who may have allowed themselves to be surprised outside by the darkness of night. He only hurts those who resist; and even then would only strike them in their own interest, to force them to seek shelter. He is, before all, one who warns. His cries not only call back home people out late on the sands; they also inform sailors at sea of the dangerous proximity of the shore, and, thereby, make up for the insufficiency of the hooting of sirens or of the light of lighthouses.
The King of Bro Arc'hant- Peter Berresford Ellis 1999
"I am called Bugel Noz,” the elf said. “I am the shepherd of the night.”’
The Bugel Noz held out his hand to her and she took it, and she felt a very soporific feeling overcome her: a dream-like state. "Hold my hand, and we will follow the dropd of blood of your beloved hawk."
And she suddenly saw the blood spots again and the Bugel Noz led her onwards, following them, following them southwards and further southwards, until they came by dark forest paths to a strange, wild seashore.
She heard a singing. At once, the Bugel Noz said to her: ‘Close your ears, Litavis. You must not listen to the song of the mari-morgan. Close your ears but look about you.”’
Then the Bugel Noz put a pipe to his lips and played a wild tune. There was a sudden flash of lightning in the cave and a voice said: "Who summons me?"
The elf replied: "I do, Yann-an-Oded. I bring Litavis and place her in your care. For she seeks her beloved." Then the Bugel Noz was gone, playing his pipes back into his forest dwelling. [...]
Back across the stones of Carnac with the singing, dancing korrigan, she hastened. Then Yann-an-Oded was waiting for her and took her by the hand across the dark forests to the seashore. She heard the whispering voice of the sea. There Yann-an-Oded released her hand and she found that it was taken by the Bugel Noz.
The Bugel Noz seemed to lift her up and threw her and she found herself in her chamber. She looked around and found a hiding-place for the heavy silver sword. Then, in despair, she fell on her bed, weeping, just as the cock began to crow.

The Bugul-noz (pronoshed: / b y.d, yl.o.non. / in Vannetish Breton) or bugel-noz ("child of the night" or "night's shepherd") is a nocturnal creature of the legendary Breton, close to the horf and the werewolf, which comes in the form of a métamorphewide-have shepherd. Especially attached to the Vannetais, which forms the present Morbihan, it has been mentioned since the 17th ecentury, and perhaps derived from creatures of the "caller" type. The main collections on the subject date back to the beginning of the 20th ecentury.
Popular tradition speaks of the fear that it inspires and ways to protect itself from it. According to Walter Evans-Wentz and Pierre Dubois, he would have to warn the late shepherds of the arrival of the night hordes, and to push them back to their homes. Breton mothers once frightened their children by referring to their risk of being kidnapped by this creature.
Etymology and terminology
Joseph Loth studied etymology in his Breton-French Dictionary of the Vannes dialect in 18941. The name has changed its meaning to the Vannet Breton, since bugel, which designates the child, is the same word as bugul, the shepherd, whose meaning is different in the other dialects2,3,Note 1.
The form "bugel-noz" is found in 1633, and that of bugul-noz in Vannetese Breton from 17324. The spelling is quite variable, the name being mostly present in the form "bugul-noz", Note 2but there are also the forms "Bugul Noz" Note 3and "Bugul-nôz".Note 4
Origin and confusion
For Yves Le Gallo, the bugul-noz played a épouvantail"scarecrowning", 5Marie-Charlotte Delmas instead called it a croquemitaine6. Parents wishing not to see their children running in the evening threatened them by saying that if the bugul-noz saw them outside the house, he would take them away in his huge round hat7.
According to Walter Evans-Wentz 8and Albert Moxhet9, he may have come from Yannig an Aod (or Yann-An-D), "Den's Jean", a appeleur"callerer" who pushes fishermen back to the harbor at nightfall.
A bulletin of the Morbihan Archaeological Society, published in 1858, states that it originated from the Latin dusino Paul Sébillot noted a confusion between the bugul-noz and the werewolf in his time, the same name for the lycanthrope who joined his people during the night and the nocturnal shepherd of human appearance In 1914, Canon J. Buleon conducted an investigation into the Bugul-Noz and the Garo (wolf-wol), which appeared in the Revue Morbihannaise of February; he assumed that there had been confusion between several types of narratives, which had merged into each other12. As Gael Milin points out, Buleon regrets that storytellers amalgamated formerly separate creatures13. The Breton priest and folklorist François Cadic noted in 1922 that the bugul-noz, kannerezed-noz and hopper-noz were assimilated to returningees, the devil's suppôtsDiable14.
Description
According to some descriptions, the bugul-noz is a werewolf.
The descriptions of the Bugul-noz are confused, but they suggest a fairly large size, or even a giant size, which allows him to catch children in his hat6. His behavior is rather mischievous, a collection of Bubry talking about his habit of surprising passers-by by lifting a pole between their legs6. According to accounts collected by the Morbihan Archaeological Society in 1858, the bugul-noz is an "eviling goblin" that frightens humans with its appearances, and sometimes wears a wolf skin to run . He can also ride a horse, and take away people he then throws into the water6.
"When the shadows have descended, and the night bird leaves its retreat, go away: you would hear in it, like plaintive voices, the groans of the shepherds taken from the Bugul-Noz, this Breton croque-mitaine." ”
- Traveller's guide: Carnac and its surroundings15
The Bretons who return late from the plough are likely to meet him, and fear this moment Spirit of the night, the bugul-noz sees the pinnacle of its power at midnight9. He frequents the woods and paths, hidden by a hat 9"wider than a cart wheel" 16and a loose white mantle dragging to the ground after Vérusmor17. As in the nightmare, he grows as one approaches him. It possesses the gift of metamorphosis 18in order to surprise its victims16, and can change, for example, into horses19. He is sometimes accompanied by korrigans pushing their walking song20. Like many other night spirits, he hates 6whistling: Anatole Le Braz cites a tradition of Riantec, which is that when he is heard whistling behind, he should be careful to whistle as well21. He is not always evil, for he would have protected people from demons, hiding them under his coat17.
In other stories, he is a werewolf who takes children by hiding them in his hat22. Paul Sébillot gives a version according to which a farmer realizes that his brother is "bugul-noz" and comes out every night in the form of a wolf. On the advice of a priest, he will join him one night and the sting with a two-pointed fork According to the more recent authors François Le Divenah and Thierry Jigourel, the bugul-noz is sometimes linked to the sea, where it was "armed to the teeth".24 According to Milin's collections, he feared the hawthorn, whose power ended enchantment25. He would be a cursed man, who performs a penance16. According to Sébillot's collections, the bugul-noz is an archaic pagan, allergic to the sign of redemption17. According to Buffet, one way to protect oneself consists in "quickly hiding behind a Christian door, whose horizontal and vertical bars form like a cross", or else remaining in a ploughed field, previously sown with blessed grains26.
The American anthropologist Walter Evans-Wentz called the Bugul-noz "faw-man" and suggested, like Pierre Dubois, that he was taking his herd of shadows at night to tell the shepherd that it was time to return, and would not be evil, but would urge men to leave the territories he haunted with the spirits27,28.
In the notes of a travelling rag made in Lamballe in 2017 and published by Kleinzach under the title, La Légende du Buguel, we read this description: "I saw a long face with cellars and endless mouth leaning over me. Between the two jaws, hundreds of small, pointed teeth stood in disorder. On his head I could see the worn ribbons of an old hat whipped by the wind. I understood then that it was not branches that would clamp me to suffocation, but the hands of this buzzing creature made of proliferations and protrusions. A body of earth, wood, moss, composed of everything that squirts and lives in the shadow of this forest kept me prisoner." Here again the creature is not described as evil, it would be the ghost of a young sheath abandoned in the woods: "This is how they would have continued to grow aimlessly, by proliferation, agglomerating to their person all that wilderness offered them. Pushing like tortuous trees that grow between two sterile stones and without guardian, they would have adopted unshakeed silhouettes of disproportionate and grotesque proportions. At home, the bark mixes with the bone, the bone with the rags and the rags with the putrid flesh. Their unforming faces are only grimaces. There is a huge mouth that forms a scar that accommodates thousands of teeth of milk29."
Communities and changing beliefs
The bugul-noz is best known in Vannetais26. Joseph Frison collected a testimony that the creature would have lived with his wife on the side of Hennebont, but has since disappeared30.
The main collections about this creature were made by Joseph Frison in the early 20th ecentury6. He gathered several for the Revue des traditions populaires: Le petit boudeur in April 1908, Le berger de nuit in July 1910, Le Bugul-nôz in November of the same year, and the delivery of the Bugul-nôz in February 1911.30 He learned from a servant in his twenties that one of these creatures was once known to haunt Cléguer church. The popular belief, however, is already disappearing: a peasant from Lorient claims to have heard of the bugul-noz but no longer remembering it, adding that it may be a singer bird, but that this name is hardly used anymore30.
Yves Le Diberder collected new anecdotes in the Kemenet-Héboe, the Porhoet, and in the Rhuys peninsula in 191231. To clarify a belief that excommunicates became werewolves, Abbé Cadoux investigated the Garou and the Bugul-Noz in Bubry 1914. Walter Evans-Wentz (1878–1965) became interested in the Bugul-noz, but he could not find a description of the herd that accompanied it, or what his meeting, although he noted that the Bretons preferred to avoid it28.
Cultural impact
The Bugul-noz gave its name to a trail, run between Sarzeau and the Quistinic Stadium33,34. A version of his caption is displayed on the way to Pont Augan, Quistinic.
This creature is included in Faery Wicca's book by Edain McC Coy, who describes it as the last of its species, adding that it is incredibly ugly, causing him a lot of pain, prompts the forest animals to avoid it, and explains that he himself screams to warn people of his approach and not frighten them. She adds that he is not malicious, but always remains alone because of his frightful appearance35.
A monster of the video game also bears the name36, as is a creature from the second edition of the Pathfinder role-playing game.
Bugul Noz is also the name of a Belgian Celtic punk band. The intro track of their self-titled debut album 37is a tale featuring the creature.
In Brittany, the child is traditionally the child who keeps the animals, hence the frequent confusion between the senses of "shepherd" and "child". Form used in most research works. Form used by Pierre Dubois. Form

Classroom management is a critical component of successful teaching, as it directly impacts student learning, engagement, and overall classroom climate. Effective classroom management strategies go beyond simply maintaining order - they create an environment conducive to academic achievement and personal growth. In this comprehensive article, we'll explore 20 research-backed classroom management techniques that can help educators foster an engaging and productive learning environment.
1. Model Ideal Behavior
One of the most powerful classroom management strategies is to model the behavior you want to see from your students. When you demonstrate exemplary conduct, such as using polite language, maintaining eye contact, and respecting others' speaking time, you're setting a clear example for your students to follow. Engage in mock conversations with other teachers or student helpers in front of the class, then lead a discussion to highlight the ideal behaviors you showcased.
2. Involve Students in Establishing Guidelines
Encouraging students to help create classroom expectations and rules can generate greater buy-in than simply dictating what they can and cannot do. At the beginning of the school year or semester, facilitate a discussion where students share their ideas about appropriate and inappropriate behavior. This collaborative process will lead to mutually understood and respected expectations for your classroom culture.
3. Document and Revisit Rules
Don't let the mutually-agreed-upon guidelines go forgotten. Print and distribute the list of rules generated during the class discussion, and take time to review them with your students. Posting the rules in a visible location will serve as a constant reminder. You can also incorporate the rule list into a student handbook, along with other important information.
4. Address Individual Issues, Not the Whole Class
Avoid the temptation to punish the entire class for the actions of a few. Instead, address specific students in a friendly manner, such as asking, "Do you have a question?" or "Do you need help focusing?" This approach allows you to maintain a positive disposition while immediately addressing the inappropriate behavior.
5. Encourage Student Initiative
Promoting a growth mindset and injecting variety into your lessons can be powerful classroom management strategies. Allow students to work ahead and deliver short presentations to share their takeaways with the class. This not only keeps eager learners engaged but can also inspire others to take on additional challenges.
6. Offer Sincere Praise
Praise students for their efforts and accomplishments, as research has shown this can improve academic and behavioral performance. When your praise is specific and genuine, it can inspire the class, boost self-esteem, and reinforce the behaviors you want to see.
7. Utilize Non-Verbal Communication
Complement your verbal instructions with actions and visual aids to improve content delivery and help students focus. Strategies such as running learning stations with a variety of non-spoken content types, like videos, infographics, and physical objects, can enhance student engagement.
8. Celebrate Successes with Classroom Parties
Occasionally holding a classroom party to acknowledge students' hard work can be a powerful motivator. Even a brief celebration with snacks and group games can reinforce the idea that you value their efforts and want to reward them for their achievements.
9. Establish Clear Behavioral Expectations
Clearly communicate your expectations for student behavior and consistently follow through with consequences for rule violations. Involve students in the rule-making process, document the guidelines, and hold individuals accountable when they fail to meet the established standards.
10. Build Positive Relationships with Students
Take the time to get to know your students on a personal level. Learn about their strengths, weaknesses, interests, and challenges, and use this information to tailor your instructional and behavioral approaches. Fostering strong student-teacher relationships can significantly enhance classroom management.
11. Implement Consistent Routines and Schedules
Students thrive on structure and predictability. Establish clear routines and schedules for your classroom, allowing students to know what is expected of them at each point during the day. This can increase productivity and minimize disruptions.
12. Address Conflict Constructively
When conflicts or behavioral issues arise, address them in a calm and constructive manner. Avoid escalating the situation or making it personal, and instead focus on finding a resolution that maintains respect and fosters learning.
13. Differentiate Instruction
Adapting your teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of your students can keep them engaged and on-task. 5 Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, such as hands-on activities, cooperative learning, and technology-based lessons, to cater to different learning styles.
14. Provide Clear Expectations and Feedback
Clearly communicate your academic and behavioral expectations to students, and provide regular feedback on their progress. This helps students understand what is required of them and allows them to adjust their behavior and learning accordingly.
15. Incorporate Movement and Brain Breaks
Allowing students to move around and take periodic breaks can help them stay focused and engaged. Incorporate activities like standing desk rotations, brain gym exercises, or short physical activity challenges to help students recharge and refocus.
16. Leverage Technology Effectively
Integrating technology into your classroom can enhance engagement and support effective classroom management. Use tools like digital whiteboards, student response systems, and online collaboration platforms to facilitate interactive lessons and monitor student progress.
17. Foster a Sense of Community
Creating a positive, inclusive classroom community can promote prosocial behavior and a sense of belonging. Encourage students to support and respect one another, and actively celebrate their diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
18. Maintain Enthusiasm and a Positive Attitude
Your own enthusiasm and positive attitude can be contagious, helping to set the tone for the classroom. Even on challenging days, strive to maintain an optimistic and engaging demeanor, as this can significantly impact student motivation and behavior.
19. Collaborate with Families and Caregivers
Establish open lines of communication and collaboration with students' families and caregivers. Work together to understand and address any behavioral or academic concerns, and celebrate successes to strengthen the home-school partnership.
20. Continuously Reflect and Adapt
Effective classroom management is an ongoing process, and it's essential to regularly reflect on your strategies and make adjustments as needed. Seek feedback from students, observe their responses to different approaches, and be willing to try new techniques to find what works best for your unique classroom dynamics.
By implementing these 20 research-backed classroom management strategies, educators can create an engaging, productive, and positive learning environment that supports student success.
