She opens her mouth to respond before closing it again, opting instead to remain silent. She holds her ground, staring back up at him, nearly completely fearless. Although he has another effect on her, one she's sure he knows about. Why else would he let her get so close?

“Fine,” it's blunt yet a sign of surrender. He's won, at least, he's won this round.

She leaves, not daring to look back at him. It'll be better if they spend some time apart so she returns to the bowels of Vought Tower and the actual job she's employed for.

Weeks go by and yet, Homelander doesn't see her, mainly because she's purposely avoiding him. Yet every so often, a gift arrives for hin and, as always, it's something of historical value that she's acquired.

However, she never delivers it - it's always some Vought lackey she sweet talked into doing it for her because she's keeping a low profile.

Every now and again she has to head to Crime Analytics to convince The Deep to let her look at some security footage. The Deep, being a gormless idiot, mistakes this for flirting and brags about how this beautiful woman from, well, he doesn't know what she does, keeps talking to him.

Of course, it doesn't take much time at all for this news to reach Homelander.

Homelander blinked as he watched her leave suddenly, his brows furrowing as he was left wondering what the hell just happened. He didn’t care if she broke the law, if what she was doing was illegal. She wasn’t the only one doing such things around Vought. Besides, if she knew half the stuff he’d done…well, she wouldn’t have him on such a high pedestal, that was for sure.

Still, he didn’t stop her from leaving. Nor did he try to contact her. He was aware of her being distant, aware of her purposely avoiding him. And while he’d love to ruin her plans and show up regardless, he was far too busy for mind games. Instead, he left it be and focused on his day to day tasks, between missions and interviews and the like.

Though, as the presents continued to arrive, Homelander wondered just what the hell her deal was, considering she was getting others to deliver them on her behalf. Yet each one he placed in a specific spot, almost like his own collectors room, every item neatly and carefully placed.

Course, Deep then just had to complicate matters by bragging during a meeting one morning, about how he’d met this girl and she kept talking to him. The way he spoke about her annoyed him. He left the room after throwing Deep a death glare, then went to hunt her down. With his senses it didn’t take long at all to find her.

“Who the fuck do you think you are? Avoiding me, but sending gifts? Not talking to me but talking to Deep? What is your problem, hm? What, are you mad at me? For not caring that you’re going against the law? Big whoop, sweetheart. Guess what? I’ve done that too. Many times!” He rambled. “And what’s with the gifts, huh?! Having someone else deliver them for you. Why the mind games?”

Ride The Cowboy

Pairings: JJ x BestFriend!Fem!reader

Summary: JJ got a new cowboy hat and reader has no idea about the rule.

Authors Note: I had a smut written for a request. It was JJ and reader with the cowboy hat rule but it got deleted! It was anonymous so I hope whoever requested this sees it and enjoys!!!

JJ found this random black cowboy hat at one of our shops in town. I didn't think he was serious when he said he wanted to buy it because it's not even his style.

Anyway he's been wearing it for a fucking week, trying to act all country and it's so fucking annoying. He has started using a country accent trying to be funny, but it was just so, so lame.

We were at the boneyard having the time of our lives. JJ and I were dancing together, giggling and having some normal fun, until he started talking like he was from Texas.

I was so fed up. I reached for his hat and threw it onto my head. "Look at me, I'm JJ, all I ever do is talk with an accent and twirl around in my cowboy hat!!" I said, very annoyed with a terrible attempt at a country accent.

JJ was staring at me in awe, which got the attention of our friend Pope, whose jaw went slack as well. Pope walked over and rested his arm on JJ's shoulder. "She doesn't know does she?" Pope looked at JJ with the most dead serious look I've ever seen. What the hell was he talking about???

"I don't think she does." He grinned and started laughing. His cheeks flushed red as he looked at his feet then back to Pope. "What are you talking about?!" I asked frantically. "Have fun cowboy." Pope said patting JJ's back while walking away. I give JJ a questioning look.

He got extremely close to my body, yet he was still towering over me. Damn this boy was tall. JJ took my hands in his. "You don't know the cowboy hat rule?" He asked smirking down at me. "These things have fucking rules too???" He giggled. "Yes but this one is probably the most important." Somehow he got closer, which was surprisingly not as uncomfortable as I thought. "What is it??" I asked getting annoyed because he was playing games at this point.

"Wear the hat, ride the cowboy."

His face never changed from that smug little smirk, but my eyes got wide. I hit his chest, he was my best friend. "No way Maybank, that's probably something you made up to get you laid." He grinned. "It's not I swear, if you don't believe me look it up."

Unfortunately I did, and he was right. It was some kind of sick joke. "Well I didn't know so it doesn't count!" I crossed my arms. "Hey, rules are rules baby." He was holding my hips now. Why were butterflies filling my stomach? I've never thought of JJ this way. It would be so wrong. "So is no pogue on pogue macking!" I say trying my hardest to find a way out of this, but of course he's ready for whatever I say. "First of all, John B and Sarah are right over there, basically eating each other's faces. Second of all, it's not macking, it's riding baby." He smiled to himself because he knew he won.

JJ walked us to the Twinkie, where we wouldn't be bothered. "You just want an excuse to fuck your best friend!" I say fighting the best I could. "I could say the same about you! I didn't tell you to steal my hat! And you're still wearing it!" He laughs so hard after he gets his sentence out. I was blushing when I quickly took his hat off and threw it at him.

I was hovering over him, very anxious. He had a huge grip on my hips. "We do not have to do this if you don't want to." He says while holding me up. "JJ, I'm already naked. Plus you said it, rules are rules." Before I could change his mind or my own, I started easing myself down onto his dick. JJ let out a slight hissing sound as I went lower. Not gonna lie, I did need to get fucked. It was probably why I found him so annoying this week.

JJ helped me move at a pace that made us both feel good. "Come here." He pulled me in with a motion of his finger. "Might as well break a rule while we're at it." I'm not gonna answer this with The Aristocrats, as a I threatened, because I want to make a very serious point to this anon:

Purity culture isn't just religious abuse. It is most widely connected to religious abuse. Including actions in the Catholic Church and all fundamentalist Christianity. It's entire existence is about terrifying and indoctrinating people into being fearful of their own actions and bodies so that they feel certain that moving out from the "umbrella of safety" (to use a fundamentalist term) will result in them being harmed in ways they can't imagine. This is generally happening at the same time as they are being harmed by those who are supposed to be keeping them safe from all those terrible, worldly evils. Like speaking up when you're being abused. Believing you are not responsible for the actions of a rapist, and many, many other things that any person with an ounce of self-worth and good sense (two things not allowed in fundamentalist circles) knows are true in abuse situations.

But the point of the purity culture as identity in the above-mentioned circles is to teach people from birth that they aren't to have their own feelings, ideas, or instincts. They are only to follow the feelings, ideas, and instincts on the approved list in order to stay within the structures they know and feel safe in even as they feel very unsafe.

That being said:

Purity culture can also exist WITHOUT a religious structure while still being about controlling the thoughts, feelings, and actions of everyone within it. In terms of fandom, purity culture is groups of people stating that if you write something uncomfortable or gross or immoral, then YOU must be uncomfortable or gross or immoral and therefore, not worthy of the safety and moral superiority of the group.

Purity culture without religion teaches black and white thinking, encourages thought policing, and shames anyone who steps outside of a very narrow definition of good and bad by turning an entire group of people against them for being "bad".

Just like in religious circles.

Just like in the cult of fundamentalism.

Purity culture is a term taken by fundamentalists and turned into a whole way of life because the goal of fundamentalism is to make people too scared to leave. Purity culture in fandom does the same thing. It uses fear and threats of abandonment/harassment to control the way people act because a group of people decided they didn't like something, so they must try and wipe it out rather than simply ignore it.

I am not mis-using the term because "Bobo the clown said my ship was cringe." My use of the term is intentional and precise because what is happening in fandom spaces now is non-religious purity culture cult thinking. My use of the term does not invalidate or water down the use of it in conversations about religious abuse and trauma. With or without religion, purity culture is a dangerous cult of "us vs them" that is built to demoralize and eradicate those deemed unworthy.

-Reader is intimidated by Neuvillette so they swallow his cane (like a sword) in a vain attempt to assert dominance (they're scared of Neuvillette and want him to know theyre not an easy target)

-Reader eats Kaeya's cape but chokes on all the fluff and he has to take them to the hospital and nurse them back to health (hurt/comfort, you may invent ur own motive for this)

-Heizou arrests Reader for smoking illegally sourced Naku Weed (hes mad not cuz theyre breaking the law but because theyre refusing to tell him where their stash is)

-Reader jokingly calls Diluc an offbrand Batman and has to comfort him cuz hes insecure now

-Reader gets sent to Fortress of Meropide for selling Naku Weed but they somehow manage to get Naku Weed to the prisoners and they start a prison Naku Weed empire that cant be shut down and Wriothesley starts crying from stress
