Chenford + argument over the kiss!
title: kiss me like you wanna be loved, available on AO3 here.
rating: gen
warnings: it mentions canon events, so if you’re up to date on S4, you’re fine
a/n: the title comes from Ed Sheeran’s Kiss Me. This is a short, little ficlet that has no real start or end point. As an aside, I can’t make any promises about filling prompts. I get easily overwhelmed and I have ones from over a year ago still sitting in my inbox, lonely and neglected.
"It's not a big deal. It was barely anything."
He narrowed his eyes, unsure if she was genuinely unphased, living in denial, or just trying to bait him.
"Barely anything? There was practically a spit trail." He grimaces even as he says it but meets her raised eyebrow defiantly all the same. That kiss was something and she knows it.
"Oh, you mean, the kiss I initiated? I thought we were talking about your kiss." He huffs at her words. She's definitely baiting him now. She rolls her eyes at his glare. "Relax, Tim, I swapped more spit with my seventh grade crush."
"Are you serious right now? You can't honestly think that was a... Bland kiss." She shrugs in response and then sighs and it feels a little condescending, if he’s being honest.
"What do you want me to say, Tim? I don't think it was a bad kiss! It's just. It was a kiss. Look, if I admit it was a good kiss, will that satisfy you?" She looks at him expectantly, hands on her hips, and Tim can feel his neck heating as he struggles to articulate exactly what he does want her to say.
"It's not about whether it was a good kiss or not, I just... I don't get how you're minimizing it." His lips move into a casual shrug. "Do you go around kissing everyone like that?" He tries not to betray just how curious he is about the answer. While he can see a bit of colour rising on her cheeks, he can't quite tell if it's from her temper or if he's finally getting a reaction from her.
"Of course not!" She's a little indignant before she catches herself, looking down as she straightens her top and pulls on her composure like armour, before she meets his eyes again. "It was... Intense, I guess. But it was just a kiss, you know? We were in the moment, practicing, going method. It wasn't serious, Tim, it didn’t mean anything."
His vision blurs for a second, just loses focus, and it's like he can suddenly, literally, read between the lines. Lucy thinks the kiss was just a kiss. Maybe she thinks it was a fluke, maybe she thinks it was the lure of the forbidden, maybe she’s just made peace with it whatever it was, but to Lucy, this wasn't an earth-shattering revelation, floodgates opening, no. For Lucy, it was just a... Kiss. That was all it could be. Quite frankly, that won't do. Misery loves company after all. She comes back into focus and Tim knows he has a few choices he can make here, but only one that really makes sense to him.
"I disagree." His hands grasp her hips, drawing her in, and he's not sure if Lucy knows what’s going to happen, if he's that predictable, but her hands are pressed against his chest just like last time, and then he's kissing her. And this isn't some basic-no frills-nice-to-see-you-again kiss. No, this is A Kiss. Her hands slide up his shoulders until they're locked around his neck and he slides one of his hands up until he can tangle it in the waves of her hair, cradling her neck and jaw, and he just. keeps. on. kissing. her.
Because Tim Bradford finishes what he starts and if Lucy isn't in love with him yet, then he's still got work to do.

guillermo del toro’s pinocchio is a beautiful film but my god no one has adapted that story like neverafter. you can never look at it the same way again after listening to lou wilson, a black man, explaining that he chose to play as pinocchio because it’s a story about a little boy who isn’t allowed to make mistakes. that in pinocchio's story, he is fundamentally barred from childhood at once upon a time. he must earn something that everyone else is granted from birth. the other boys get to tell lies and play and get into trouble, but when pinocchio does the same thing there are grave and violent consequences. his pinocchio is trying to understand why the world is so unfair, why the rules are so different for him, why everyone else gets to be a real boy.
and I think about it every day.
