Mary dies of the spanish flue instead of Lavinia

Matthew feels guilty because this is what makes him realise he still had feelings for Mary and plans to call the wedding off but Violet convinces not to because What would be the point of that? Mary is dead and Lavinia is alive and Downtown will need an heir

She is not trying to be insensitive, just practical, she loved her granddaughter but life goes on and Matthew has a duty to the state, he must marry and provide an heir

Matthew and Lavinia's marriage is hunted by Mary's ghost from the very beginning, Lavinia knows Matthew is having second thoughts but he won't speak about it and it makes her feel insecure in the relationship, she feels pressured to accept Anna as a lady's maid and she actually likes Anna a lot (because Anna is just so likeable) but she doesn't feel like she can open up to her (or anyone in the house) because she was Mary's first, everything in Downtown was Mary's first and she can't measure up to a ghost

They have a daughter and Matthew wants to call her Mary "it's a family name" he says, Lavinia cries to sleep but feels like she has to agree to make Matthew happy, they settle for Mary Elizabeth "it's a family name" she says with a forced smile and promises herself to only ever call her child Elizabeth

Sybil shows up at Downtown one night, alone and pregnant and asking Why isn't Tom here? He was supposed to be here, they had a plan but something obviously went terribly wrong because Tom isn't here

Turns out Tom died on the fire, they are saying he was the main instigator but she knows it's not true, they are pinning it on him because they can prove he was there and he was politically involved but in reality he was trying to save someone from the fire

Sybil wants to clear her husband's name, Robert and Cora want her to let it go and rest, she ends up going back to Ireland and giving birth there, an emergency cesarean but she and baby are both fine

Robert and Cora are desperate to bring her and her daughter back to Downton where they think she'll be safe and after burring Tom and many months of fighting with the authorities and having to survive as a single working mother with few resources in a foreign country she agrees to spend some time at Downtown to regroup and let her family know her daughter

The family immediately starts planning how to get her to stay, Cora gets the hospital board to offer her a job "just so you have something to do while you are here dear, I know how much you hate to stand around doing nothing all day"

With Mary dead, Edith doesn't have the pressure of being the only unmarried sister and she feels like her family needs her at Downtown so she doesn't try to see Ser Stralla again (Robert is happy about that), she becomes more involved in the management of the state because she needs something to do, (her father is less than happy about that but Matthew encourages her), she continues her emotional affair with the farmer but tells herself she is not doing anything wrong because nothing physical is happening (yet)

William survives the war and Daisy gets so much pressure from everyone around her to accept his proposal they end up planning a wedding but she regrets it last minute and leaves him at the altar

With William surviving I feel like killing Thomas is the logical swap but let's be honest, the downstairs plots would be so boring without him so instead I'm thinking his attempt to injure himself to get out of the trenches doesn't work, he stays in France until the end of the war and even makes it to temporary gentleman but after the war he doesn't have his foot on the door at Downtown this time so he ends up being one of the homeless men Mrs. Bird & Mrs. Pattmore were feeding at their soup kitchen

They recognise him and want to help him but he is not needed at the Abbey with Alfred and Jimmy already there as footmen and William as Matthew's valet

Maybe Sybil gets him a job at the hospital with the help of a little manipulation from O'Brien who now feels like Thomas owes her a favour for that, it gives Thomas an excuse to stay at the village and hang around the Abbey (and get a crush on Jimmy) but he isn't under the authority of Carson or the Protection of Robert when he makes the wrong move this time

Thomas and Sybil working together in this context (and outside of the war storyline) can be a juicy dynamic since she would be living at the Abbey and frustrated that everyone expects her to go back to being just Lady Sybil Crawley like Tom and Ireland never happened and Thomas in this AU would have no reason to go with the program and pretend nothing happened since his job doesn't depend on pleasing the family, in fact he feels like he owes to her for speaking on his behalf and getting him this job (even if she doesn't think the same because she isn't the type to keep scorers on what she considers the right thing to do) so he feeds the flames instead of placating her

Sybil would love to have someone from outside her family and traditional social circle to vent to and Thomas would love the feeling of importance he'd get from her telling him her problems, he runs into Nanny West on the path to Downtown just like in canon and goes straight to Sybil, it becomes a big fight between her and the family and she ends up moving out of the abbey but agrees to stay in the village

Edith eventually gets pregnant (because of course she does) and tells Sybil instead of her aunt because they are close, Sybil lets it slip to Thomas who sees an opportunity for several important people to owe him a favour and puts her in contact with a certain gay Marquess who was planning to flee the country if his family doesn't stop pressuring him to marry a cousin, he needs a wife and an heir to keep appearances and his family happy and she needs her child to not be born a bastard so she can keep it, it would be the perfect solution if she wasn't falling in love with his cousin Bertie who lives with them because he is the land agent

when it comes to the unknown characters it's hard to say what's exactly popular and what isn't but to my knowledge these are some headcanons i have that are unpopular :)

(also by the "main groups" i'm going to assume you mean the marauders, skittles, snapes gang and lily, mary and marlene so i won't be speaking of specifically any of them in this post but if you want any hcs for any of them let me know :)

ik a lot of people like to group them all together and call them the "amethysts" (which i'm so curious to know how that name came about) and i am so not onboard with this hc i can't lie 😭 i do not think they were all friends with each other or that they even all spoke to each other

I only really have hcs for two friend groups for the majority of them

Edgar Bones, Amelia Bones, Fabian Prewett & Gideon Prewett (i call them the blackbirds because they're all hufflepuffs and their patronus' are all birds) and they're also friends with Benjy Fenwick, Caradoc Dearborn and Pandora Ollivander

Emma Vanity, Florence Greengrass, Septima Vector, Bertha Jorkins and Aurora Sinistra (i see these girls as like the IT girls of Hogwarts and 2 years above the marauders)

the rest i obviously see as having friends but it's less organised friendgroups if that makes sense

some other unpopular headcanons i have

- Benjy Fenwick was a Slytherin and his parents were death eaters (his father agreed with Voldemort but his mother didn't and told Benjy to earn Dumbledores trust so that he could escape the death eaters)

- Emmeline Vance was not alternative/emo (and i've been seeing a lot of Emmeline being friends with Evan Rosier and I literally have no idea where that came from and hate it (sorry to anyone who likes it)

- Edgar and Amelia didn't have pink/dyed hair. Their family was very conservative and there's no way they would've gotten away with that

- Hestia Jones was a Ravenclaw (i see a lot of people hc her as a Hufflepuff) and kind of a mean girl. She was very headstrong and blunt

- Benjy Fenwick and Amelia Bones were head boy and girl in 1976-1977 school year

- Amelia Bones was a lesbian and madly in love with Pandora Ollivander but never told her how the really felt because she knew Pandora didn't feel the same

- Amelia Bones also figure skates

- Sybill Trelawney and Hestia Jones are best friends and Hestia is the only person who doesn't call Sybill weird

- Fabian and Gideon Prewett were Hufflepuffs and not ginger (i see them more as a dirty blondeish)

I just redid my Prisoner run twice now cuz I wanted to go for romancing Stella, but kept fucking up the event trigger for the romance lock-in lol. Not even too mad about it, I got to experiment a bit with the relationship building in this game, and it got me to appreciate the characters writing even more.

Anyway. now for the highlight time

Named them Crystal (it's what I plan on naming Pris in my Heathens AU), and choosing a single pronouns set for him was the toughest choice of this run tbh, since I hc Pris as genderfluid and using He/She/They, but I ended up going with They/Them lol (will be using all three pronouns to refer to them tho)

gonna go through what the 'canon' run ended up like, with maybe some commentary about the differences from the first Pris Run

Traits: Street Smarts and Book Smarts (which may just be my new fave trait combo tbh, the synergy between these two is AWESOME)

Day 1:

– Crys and Tabby are already off on the wrong foot, with Crys being very blunt about their distaste of the State

– Broke into the forbidden state thanks to SS as soon as they were done settling in (c'mon, it's a centuries old state full of ancient history, he can't NOT poke around a lil bit)

– Was immediately enchanted by Gretchen, and agreed to cryptid hunting mainly because of her

(Redacted Run fun fact: Stella didn't even invite Crystal there, and I'm still not entirely sure what triggers it; main differences were Crystal being less harsh on Tabitha with her and not mentioning bacon being bad for dogs, I think? If that's the case, I must've been really toeing the line on whatever threshold it looks into with this run)

(Another fun fact: Street Smarts lets you convince Duke to go with Stella if you refused/didn't get her invitation!! I actually didn't know that, and rationalized it as Crystal wanting to look into what's wrong with the wildlife without a guy with a shotdown breathing down his neck when I took that option then)

– Couldn't resist the dramatic irony, and gave Crystal the doorless basement that floods when it rains backstory

^the moments that made me decide Crystal would be romancing Stella

– On the redacted run, Crystal ended up saving Duke since he saved her life once earlier in the evening, but since she went with Stella for the 2nd run, he ended up more attached to Gretchen and jumped for her (totally not because I realized having neither Gretch nor Tabby in day 4 means I don't get the Stella romance)

– Accepted to stay in with Stella for the night after some convincing

Day 2:

Before anything tho. Gretch

(she singlehandedly convinced me to stick with the second run as the canon one)

– Went straight to the library, not even stopping to catch up with Sybil or Avery and read everything available

– Chose to walk with Stella in hopes to actually talk about what happened, and was glad they did (I got to see the difference between Stella not trusting you enough to do that and opening up, and it's honestly really funny. that girls' Deflection Personified)

– This was actually the first time I took the 'sneaking' part of this segment seriously and did my best to not have Tabby notice them snooping. Also, Street Smarts actually lets you talking to every group of miners without her noticing?!? And give Isaacs your number for an optional scene later?!?! That's so cool and just made me all the more happy with my trait picks for Prisoner

– Didn't warn Tabitha about the kids (Crys was still in 'sneaking' mode), and this was actually a completely new variant for me!! Didn't know Kaneeka went with you as well if Tabby isn't there

(even in a perilous situation, how is she still so pretty???)

– Despite whay our Book Smarts said, Crys went back for the other kids

Xenophilius — told me he came to the thought of me thrice without touching it whilst playing Valorant with his friends

Tbh in the previous books I wasn't a huge fan of "Vimes is Nobility now" but in this one I don't mind it so much

I wish Sally had been given more of a character. She has so much potential, bit I feel like she's just reduced to being a (female) Vampire who is Angua's Rival

On that note, I also think the whole Angua vs Sally/Werewolf vs Vampire arc could've been tied up a little better. It's obvious that it was a parallel of the Troll vs Dwarf plot line, but it just didn't feel as resolved at the end

The whole intense chase lead up to Sam getting back to Little Sam, and then "The world went soft and pink" made my heart melt into a pile of goo. Sam Vimes for Dad of the Year every year into infinity

Same vein, the scene where the dwarves broke into the house- I was honestly terrified. If anything happend to Littlw Sam I would have torn those dwarves to pieces myself. Masterful suspense building, A+

Very much liked Brick being adopted by Detritus

Also, just Detritus' character in general was really good. He felt maybe a little bit smarter/more articulate in other books, but I'm willing to forgive that given the plot. Especially the scene where he chews Vimes out for always giving the dwarves a pass but not the trolls was very well done

On the topic of characters: I really liked A.E. Pessimal as a character, and I was a bit disappointed when he disappeared halfway through. Who watches the watchers indeed.

Not sure how I feel about the Summoning Dark. I think it was an interesting concept, but the interlude scenes from the demon's perspective cheapened it a bit. I think it would have been more effective if it was left up to the reader whether it wad real or not

Loved the scenes with Captain Carrot, especially when he's struggling to straddle that bridge between dwarf and human. He's always been my fave character and I loved having him straddle that cultural bridge

We love Vimes adapting to modern technology (actually using the Goosebury for something useful)

Lady Sybil I would die for U. She deserves so much better than just being Vimes' Wife

I wish we got a bit more out of Mr. Shine. He's such an interesting character, both on his own and in conjunction with other worldbuilding. Like, how does someone like Chrysophase respond to a politically powerful figure like Mr. Shine? Do their ideals come into conflict at all? Etc.

Also, I think that the side plot with Nobby and Sgt Colon investigating the stolen painting got dropped a bit. Like it came back in the end, but it felt a bit out of nowhere.

Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10. I think it leaves some things to be desired, and there was a lot of plot juggling (which I've come to accept is just part of Pratchett's style) but on the whole it was a lot of fun, and gave quite a bit of depth to some of my favorite Discworld characters and the world itself.

my scarlet hollow playthroughs so far (SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY):

SYLV -hot + street smart -he tries to be nice in general but always says the funny thing -okay relationship to tabitha and tends to invite her (tabitha probably regrets this now oops) -often private about his feelings and leaves a lot of dialogue options on the table, but will call out bs (cops and reese's mom this is you) -skeeved by wayne and sybil (no tea for him) -initially kept his options open but zeroed in on reese immediately (locked in)

LUNE -talks to animals + keen eye -generally polite but she'll definitely ignore you to talk to your cat -empathetic to tabitha but not especially sympathetic about her work -befriended the possums in her dresser (they had some extremely interesting opinions i am still experiencing fridge horror about black tabby games you goddam geniuses) -peanut allergy -ghost made her old -suspicious of wayne but reluctantly regards him as an ally -bad track record for keeping people's parents alive so far -glommed onto stella (fellow streamer) and angled for every choice that would get closer to her (locked in)

CHAD -hot + powerful build -a totally selfish asshole who says the meanest possible thing UNLESS he can flirt with someone -what he can't punch he will fuck (that means you, wayne!) -has already proven that tabitha is actually some sort of saint for not hurling him off the cliff on monday (if there's the remotest chance of her killing you in later chapters he is as good as deceased) -could have saved both geezers but didn't (was an asshole about it) -made enemies with rosalina but her dad was still interested -no showers for chad -no tea for chad either fuck off -the contrarian in action; people are very unclear about whether or not he believes in ghosts since he seems to change his mind multiple times during the same conversation (and people call him out for it i love this game so much?? i love it SO MUCH) -for that matter he will switch sides mid-fight or mid-argument according to unknown logic; his loyalties are a mystery even to him -somehow still managed to help reese?? (HOW) -i want to add that when i let him do the thing and reach out empathetically to reese (immediately after stabbing reese with an axe ofc), and then reese GOT SHOT BY TABITHA, who i'd finally called for the very first time, my JAW DROPPED and i stared at the screen in disbelieving fucking glee because HOLY SHIT THAT GOT ME. i am unbelievably lucky that didn't happen with sylv (because i loved that moment so, so much). -swerved every romance so far; if anyone can put up with him it's probably wayne

JADE -mystical + book smart -tends to greet people with either uncanny silence or an offer of boiled peanuts -leans hardest into her mystical side and talks extensively to people while avoiding being rude but if she can be weird she'll do that -kaneeka stalker but it seems tricky to do that while being weird + not sidelining tabby -first playthrough to recruit avery (i feel like a CHUMP for not realizing there was an opt-in party member the whole time) -doesn't entirely give tabitha a pass for being a coal baron but brings her everywhere and has managed to eat ice cream?? with tabitha?? Least Favorite character: I'm not gonna pick a villain bc I feel like that's a cop-out. Sooo for more or less "good" characters I'd say Fred Colon. I respect the space in the narrative he inhabits but I wouldn't want to hang out with him

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Shipping isn't the main way I partake in Discworld tbh, but here goes - Pollymal (duh), Susan/Lobsang (what could've been... even just as a friendship!), Angua/Sally (yeah), SamSybil (pure fluff tbh), maybe Lofty/Tonker or Agnes/Andre (the pianist from Maskerade).

Character I find most attractive: Sally von Humpeding, baby! Snarky butch vampire? I never stood a chance. I just wish we got to spend more time with her.

Character I would marry: NGL being married to most Discworld characters would stress me out. I think Susan Sto Helit and I could have a good marriage because we're both educators and she tries so hard to have a normal life lmao.

A random thought: I have mixed feelings about the new audiobooks. Some of them are good but the audio balancing is weirdly off between the narration and footnotes. I think they should have just got Nigel Planar to do all the books he hadn't done and same with Stephen Briggs so that all the fans would be happy /j

An unpopular opinion: Not as unpopular on Tumblr but Pterry isn't above criticism! He's clearly one of my fave authors and I think he did a lot of good writing but he obviously had faults and it does him a disservice to pretend he was some kind of saint.

My canon OTP: This one is hard bc there aren't actually a ton of canon ships in Discworld, but my fave is SamSybil. Mostly I'm just a ride or die for Sybil and Sam makes her happy so I will always ship it. Lofty/Tonker is also up there.

Non-canon OTP: PollyMal even though like its bascially canon imo. But y'all already knew this about me

Most badass character: Truly how can you answer this for Discworld. I'm gonna go with Tiffany Aching for beating the Queen of the Fairies at 9 entire years old! (I also read this when I was about her age so I have a soft spot for her.)

Pairing I am not a fan of: I am an autistic aroace Vetinari truther and so I simply cannot get behind V/V. I'm glad y'all are having fun with that though

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I wanted more Agnes. I think she was going to be the up and coming witch before Tiffany came on the scene and I LOVE Tiff but I still wish Agnes could have had a more concrete arc.

❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?

Hm. This is a tough one, because I always have lots of fic ideas, but mostly for stuff I'd write myself. Most of the things I want other people to write are things like "finishing a fic" or "a sequel to a fic of theirs."

But of "fics I would like to exist that I don't want to/can't write myself" I think the biggest is a Downton Abbey AU where Mary got pregnant by Mr. Pamuk in season 1. (He still died, just after instead of before they had sex.) So Mary goes to her mother and confesses, and Cora decides they're going to pass the baby off as hers without telling anybody, even Robert. (And maybe it will be a boy to inherit!) They accomplish this by setting off immediately on a trip to visit Granny in America with only O'Brien as a companion (because leaving her behind would be suspicious). It could go a number of ways from there, but I'm just surprised nobody has written this very obvious AU idea. Lots of other AUs! but not this one.

In my vague ideas of how it goes from there: Back home, Edith is happier with a chance to shine and no Mary to bring her down (and a promise of a special trip with Mama in a year or so). Sybill gets up to more shenanigans because Robert can't reign her in.

On the trip, O'Brien is still a servant but also gives Mary a talking-to; Mary has to treat O'Brien better now, because O'Brien knows her secret. And also, Mary's been feeling really sorry for herself and terrible, and O'Brien's not having any of it. After all, Mary's still going to have an awesome life filled with wealth and privilege, and if O'Brien had ever been so stupid, her life would have been ruined. (O'Brien is still deferential to Cora, because she actually likes Cora.)

Cora has been Visibly Disappointed in Mary this whole time, but when they get to America, Granny isn't; she's very matter-of-fact about the whole thing, which Mary finds very helpful.

From there it goes ... I have no idea where it goes.

That's my idea for a fic that I will never write and wish someone else would, and as for "who would write it best," I'm not sure. I might have to go with alex51324, because they write INCREDIBLE Downton Abbey stuff with wonderful historical detail and interesting OCs, and this is my fantasy fic author casting so why bother with trifling details like "they only write slash" and "their fave character is Thomas Barrow who is Sir Not Appearing In This Fic"

-Discworld has always been on The List so I followed the general "just pick one" recommendation

-ok putting a characters drunk rambling in the narration is pretty good. Like drunkenness and blurring state of mind etc

-"all this was untrue" oh good. *proceeds to describe something more insane* oh GOOD.

-God the back and forth of nonsense pass codes 

-oh my god the punchline being not just that but they're at the WRONG secret society 😭 

-and the switch to just ordinary pleasantries. With the dramatically grim tone otherwise. Help

-youve done it, you've broken down megalomaniacal villains to their bare essentials!

-ok probs not based on that line. And wouldn't make sense based on the SGM's motivation

-there are so many good lines that I have to hold myself back but. "A group of swamp dragons was a slump, or an embarrassment" 

-"and then they realized." What a transitional statement

-okay, I like the contrast between Vimes' alcoholism and the SGM saying "I can give it up any time I like" about summoning the dragon. 

-though side detail, It's interesting we havent actually seen him control the dragon from his perspective 

-a little funny that the currency is just dollars 

-"the curious incident of the orangutan in the nighttime" we getting Sherlock Holmes references now 

-the implication it isn't a "real dragon" but it's effect seems to be. Is the SGM transforming into one 

-one thing I like but didn't necessarily expect is there's sobering seriousness throughout the story 

-and sometimes the serious bits are told like a joke. You know? 

-all the innuendo with vimes and ramkin is so fucking funny dude 

-vimes sympathizing with the swamp dragons 🥺

-"in another few hours, the sun will rise"-ass line 

-oh the use of typeface 

-fucking MORPHIC RESONANCE, Terry?! 

-oh good to know New Orleans and Rio are Discworld-canon. 

-halfway point of the book and there's a bookend with a rainy night 

-I like that vimes is way smarter than he or the narrative give him credit for cause he's also Just Some Guy

-my totally batshit theory: the watch guy who died (Gaskin) is the Supreme Grand Master 

-im so ffxiv brain poisoned but "noble dragons don't have friends. The nearest they can get to the idea is an enemy who is still alive." IF you know you know 

-Lady Ramkin is so fucking cool she just grabbed the horses out of the mist and dragged them back what the fuck 😭

-the number of times this printing has typoed Vimes as "Vines" 

-the story has made many comparisons about the dragon's behavior being "practically human", but when we got the dragon's perspective it was more that it had an intelligence that pre-dated anything anthropomorphic so I'm not sure what to think on that 

-the giant fucking dragon hanging from the ceiling like a bat is pretty funny though

-well this took a turn from light hearted fantasy-flavored ribbing to uh. Kinda horrific! I'm a little impressed tbh

-and he got that extra characterization for seemingly no reason 

-... AND his flat denial about the dragon being back and his anger at Vimes for it. This makes a lot of sense. 

-I guess you could make the argument "wolf in sheep's clothing" since his surname is literally Lupine 

-The Poop Jokes Are Back, But No One Is Laughing Now 

-okay the previous scene makes it seem like the dragon is coming up with this horrifying arrangement itself. And now we learn it's really Wonse trying to make it "better". 

-but my honest and genuine surprise at the dragon REALIZING this, and its actual HORROR at how horrible people can be by nature. WOOF. 

-so I guess that's the "almost human" connection cause. No it's not. That's just how people read and projected it. 

-"we [dragons] never burned amd tortured and ripped one another apart and called it morality" like hello??? This is so dark all of a sudden 

-I guess the comedic tone elsewhere lets Terry sneak this shit in and make it stick especially hard. 

-^ this is nothing but praise, to be clear. I've read a lot of "silly-humorous but with darker moments" work but this might be the best example I've read so far. 

-did we need a canon explanation/justification of Vimes being an alcoholic? 

-ALTHOUGH. isn't that like. Lack of natural alcohol an actual thing? Am I insane? I swear I've heard of that before. 

-like I'm sure missing natural dopamine production which means I do need to take stimulants to function but I'm not sure if that's comparable 

-not to over analyze this but that sort of implies drinking doesn't even make him drunk unless he has way too much which adds some interesting context to previous bits.

-one bit I liked in the arrest scene is it was very trope-referential, like literally naming what a hero is supposed to do in a scene like this. But unlike say 90% of adult animation, it actually like. Made a joke of it. "There IS no fireplace!"

-ok this was earlier but I forgot to note it. I like that textually we know Vimes doesn't choose swords because he associates them with heroes. And when he decides to go to the palace for Wonse, he asks for Carrot's sword. 

-"is that you, Brother Doorkeeper? METAPHORICALLY, it said." RAW ASS LINE!!!

-ok. The whole monologue about all of humanity being evil like. Man if that isn't how I feel, sometimes. It's a little cathartic to read. Evil not because they say yes, but because they don't say no. Yeah...
