Lucifer, at his Fall
Having been consumed by his own flames of adoration, Lucifer has been left a hollowed husk of ash and cinder. Until the end he maintained to his angels that God would rejoice in their rebellion against Hell, that this test was meant to purify them in fire to come out as flawless gold in the strength of their convictions. Only once he plummeted from Heaven, agonizingly devoured by his own fire, did he realize how deeply, irrevocably wrong he had been. He never believed God could hate, and now he was the subject of his unmitigated wrath with the angels he had dragged down with him. Here, in a last plea for mercy, he reaches out not to God in his perfect hatred, but to his fellow angels, that they might deliver him from such evil. Soon after, however, he would be cast down to Hell with all his followers, with only Michael coming to bind him.

u kno, I don’t think that people consider enough the possibility (and very high probability) that Snape wasn’t mean to student’s because he wanted to, but more so because he had to. Not saying they he was nice. That man sure as hell wasn’t nice, especially when reading from Harry’s point of view.
But let’s consider for a moment the objective circumstances: Severus Snape was a past Death Eater, who at 21-ish years old changed sides (something only Dumbledore knew to which extent and the reasons), and knew of the possibility of the Dark Lord coming back because Dumbledore told him, and anyone who listened honestly, that he didn’t believe Voldemort to be truly gone.
Now, Severus Snape knows that Harry Potter, this child who is the Dark Lord’s undoing, is alive and is coming to the school, as probably most of his contemporary schoolmate’s kids are also going, have been there a while and will come for various years after. Snape is still bound to Dumbledore by his promise to be a spy, and is bound to Voldemort by brand. And Dumbledore is highly suspicious shit is about to go down (which u kno, he was rights ‘cause even from the first year lil Harry started Going Through It™️).
Having that background: Severus Snape, Head of Slytherin, and presumed Death Eater (‘cause u kno, spy), who was never known to be openly warm nor kind, who was fiercely bullied and he retaliated when felt necessary, is supposed to seem impartial and nice to all of his students?
Morally, should he had been? Heck yeah. Any decent teacher and adult should.
Realistically, should he had been? Well, if he wanted his cover blown, sure. If he wanted all of the Death Eaters who had children in school questioning the hell out of him, yeah. If he wanted Voldemort suspicious of his alliance and current belief system (which would have been at odds with the Death Eater ideals), uh-huh. But that would have made for a lousy spy at best and disastrous war changing consequences at worst.
And let’s be really honest here: Dumbledore gave him the position as teacher, primarily because he wanted to use Snape as a spy. That was Dumbledore’s priority, not the teaching. Which is a little wild to think coming from a school headmaster, truly.
This theory (which personally extends from theory to canon, because that’s how being a spy works) does not excuse him from how his prejudice blinded him from seeing Harry for Harry and not James (but the case could be made that neither did Sirius, but that’s another topic). That was wild. However, at the same time, he looked out for Harry’s life.
Again, I’m not saying Severus was warm and nice and he certainly acted mean and cruel at moments, particularly with kids from the other three houses. I just think that was part of the tragedy. He had a role to play, he played it perfectly, getting himself branded as a coward and a traitor by the people closest to him. And because of him, they won the war.

The number one most endearing thing to me about tgcf is the way the flashbacks make me feel like I’m watching Hong-er grow up. I feel like I’m watching a montage of that trembling little kid gather every ounce of courage and strength the world has to offer and slowly learn how to become somebody he can be content with. Somebody who has likes and dislikes, desires and preferences, and especially the freedom of choice, the freedom of anything, really. So now when I see Hua Cheng, legendary ghost king Crimson Rain Sought Flower, all I can see is that little kid who grew up. And that kid was always loved by the one he wanted to catch up to most in the world. He achieved exactly what he wanted and he deserves every ounce of power he’s acquired.

Basement Floor 1 was massive and sprawling and dark. Grian had better eyesight than most, even in the dark, but the only parts of the ceiling he could see were spots of reflective metal and small pools of light that bounced off stalactites.
“Do- do those ever fall?” Grian asked, eyes wide at the ceiling, and Doc stopped, turning in a slow swivel so Grian could see his entire upper half.
“Yes.” He flexed the fingers on his mechanical arm, glowing red eye boring into Grian, “It is a good thing The Hivemind is smart. And quick. Though, after the second incident, we hope to have fixed the problem. On the other floors. My workstation remains as it is.”
“You- You can’t just knock them all down?”
“I can. But I believe that if God wishes for me to be struck down, then she should have the means to do so herself. She’s gotten a couple good shots in,” Doc narrowed his physical eye, and Grian was pretty sure there was humor there, “but she knows I am above her power. So instead we will continue to feud, and I will continue to break her precious world. And if one day I die, then I would have it to be no other way than by her hand.”
“If-?”
Doc only laughed, continuing to walk down the corridor. Grian was forced to follow lest he be left behind.

one thing I keep thinking about which I’m not really seeing anyone mentioning is… you can’t really say no to the Metatron?
like I know Aziraphale wants to still believe that heaven is the side of good, that he can make a difference to make it really, properly Good (the definition of good he believes it’s supposed be and that has been corrupted by poor management) but I mean… he can’t just say no to the Metatron
(Gabriel did it and look where that got him, even if Aziraphale doesn’t know the whole story)
We even see Aziraphale make that attempt (“but I don’t want to go back to heaven”) and the Metatron breezes right past him; Aziraphale does not have a choice in this matter— he is Going to Heaven. Metatron isn’t convincing him, he’s Telling him, even if he seems merry and cajoling and congratulatory as he does it.
From Aziraphale’s expression as he walks away to tell Crowley the “good news”, it’s pretty obvious to me that he’s not nearly as excited about the prospect of inviting Crowley back to Heaven as he seems to be in the following scene (thank you Michael Sheen’s face journey for this). He’s not happy, he’s worried, and he’s deciding what the Hell he’s going to say to Crowley to get him to come with him.
Michael’s acting in the next scene seals it for me— Aziraphale is giddy, off-kilter, and over the top when he tells Crowley what happened. More so than he has any indication of being just moments before. Aziraphale knows he can’t just decide not to go back to Heaven— it’s a done deal. The Metatron wants him Upstairs, and saying no to the Metatron is a no-go because the Metatron is Dangerous
I think Aziraphale knows Crowley isn’t going to be amenable to going back to heaven, but he also knows this is the only chance he has to get Crowley to come with him. He’s acting so giddy because he has to convince Crowley— and convince himself— that this is something they can do together, because he certainly doesn’t want to do it without Crowley.
Unfortunately, Crowley would never go back to Heaven, which of course the Metatron knew. And Crowley only sees that Aziraphale wants to go back, not that he has no other choice.

Okay, please don’t yell at me but:
As much as Aziraphale wanted to take the job in heaven to restore Crowley’s angelic status, I think some part of himself let him believe that Crowley would want to come back because he wanted to, well, he wanted to become an angel again. I think deep down in some, small part of his heart he knew how Crowley would react but he convinced himself that maybe it would be different. Maybe if Crowley could help him run it things would change. Maybe if they were in it together Crowley would be happy to follow the very thing he hated- the Great/ineffable/whatever the great plan 2.0 plan. Maybe Armageddon 2.0 could be prevented. Maybe they could be everything Aziraphale had ever dreamed they could be. Because yes I agree he wanted to go to Heaven because he wanted Crowley to be able to be as happy as we see him before the beginning. He lives in denial of the fact that after 6000 years, neither of them are the same- neither of them can be like the angels they were. Aziraphale let himself believe that maybe they could. He told himself that Crowley would be overjoyed to go back to the side that made it clear that they wanted nothing to do with him. That neither of them had changed since the very first breaths of a universe that both of them would love like their own child. That, if it came down to it they could deal with Armageddon if that’s what the Almighty really wanted.
Aziraphale lets himself believe little lies like this because he can’t just let go of 6000 years on earth just like that to return to a side that he has been undyingly loyal to since literally forever. Because Aziraphale loves being an angel almost- maybe even more so- than he loves Earth. Because Everyday (haha get it *starts crying*) since Armageddont some small voice in his head was telling him he wasn’t doing any good. He wasn’t doing the “right” thing. He had abandoned the side of light. He had abandoned the “good” guys. And maybe some part of him believed it. Some part of him when he was away from Crowley, maybe even whilst he was with Crowley, felt like he had failed the Almighty; the being who had given him purpose for eternity; that he was being selfish.
Perhaps that’s why he jumped when the Metatron told him he could have it all. Perhaps he let himself believe that Crowley would come with him- because Crowley would love to be back in heaven, right? He was so happy amongst the stars, right? He would come to be with him… right? He let himself believe this because he needed heaven- he desired to be what he once treasured- he could be more- do more. He could make it better.
Maybe the idea of being angels together was just as much as a distant hope to Aziraphale as the kiss and being their own side was to Crowley.
