- aang is pansexual

- he has a decent singing voice

- him and ty lee are besties, ty lee teaches him how to braid hair to surprise katara. These hair sessions are also their Gossip Hour.

- i personally rlly like the idea of nonbinary aang, or gender fluid aang.

I know Zuko is queer because he has exactly one guy friend the same age as him(Sokka) and the rest are badass sapphic women. Mai, Ty Lee, Suki, Katara, then the Kyoshi Warriors ended up being the main security in the Fire Nation palace. Song saw the dude and went ‘time to adopt him this is bestie material’. Can we talk about Yue?

Let's just say there is a world where she doesn't have to sacrifice herself for Tui - because my girl deserves so much better like look at her.

But also, imagine the interactions she could have with all the other characters!!

Also, for that point, I'll be ignoring the fact that she'd most likely wouldn't leave the northern watertribe because responsibilities and her parents and jade jade. Let's just say it's her time for teenage rebellion and she sneaks off with the gaang or something. Idk.

Like she'd be there for the character development for Aang, Katara and Sokka (even Zuko).

But imagine she meets Toph!

Toph 'fuck you and what society/ my parents expect from me, I won't be put into a damn box because I'm not delicate porcelain to be put up on a shelf, I'll go kick ass and show people who I am, who I really am' Beifong?

That sounds so interesting! Like their parallels? Both being kept 'protected' and being put into positions they don't want and don't like (Toph being keept in a cage so to say and Yue being married off to someone neither she nor he loves).

But also, Yue is what Tophs parents see as a perfect daughter. She is soft spoken, elegant, meek and such. She is what Toph isn't.

But Toph gets free. She runs away and becomes happy and free.

I feel like they'd be such good friends once they get over the struggles. Toph would go commit some chaos and Yue would just smile and come along.

Imagine she meets Azula.

She's basically the opposite of Yue but they both have the same royal devotion. Also, Azula is a girl and it doesn't matter, she's respected and she's badass. That must be a culture shock for Yue.

Also, I think Azula and Yue have quite the interesting parallels as well. Both of them are the 'perfect princess' in the eyes of their people and culture but they are soooo different. Both put their duty above themselves in a way, both are 'blessed' (Yue literally by the moon and Azula is a prodigy), both have fathers who decide things for them (The whole marriage thing with Yue and do I even have to go into detail with Ozai?), both are kept in this cage of responsibilities and duty and both suffer in the end because of it, not having experienced the freedom a child of their status could have had their whole life only to be doomed in the end.

(Also, if we just mess more with canon and redeem Azula, I think they could be besties as well. Like they could learn so much from one another. Azula is sorta like an unhinged and abused Katara so I think it could work.)

Her meeting Mai and Ty Lee would also be something.

Nonbenders who are fucking badass? Respected for who they are? I imagine they could teach Yue how to defend herself. Just imagine Yue throwing knifes and chi-blocking people.

Same with Suki.

Another nonbender who's badass and a leader of a respected group. I think they'd get along just fine.

(Also, about that whole ship drama that would probably happen: I don't really care about ships so idk, make them poly? Who cares, just let them be happy man)

But what I would be most hyped about would be her meeting with Kanna.

You know, Kanna, who said fuck you to the sexist rules and just fucking moved across the world while a war was going on? Kanna, who basically told Pakku to fuck off and she won't marry a sexist man like him? Kanna, who's the grandmother of Katara? Who send Katara across the world to kick Pakkus ass (because she must have know)? The og? The legend? It would be amazing. I imagine they would both roast Pakku to his face. And Kanna would immediately adopt Yue as one of hers. It would be so wholesome come on.

Of course there are a lot of other characters that she'd meet, but I think the ones I mentioned are the most interesting once because of parallels and stuff.

What's her relationship with Azula and Katara like? does Ty Lee have a similar thing with Zuko and Mai, as her other besties? mai for me is someone is who is clinging very VERY tightly to the past, and absolutely refuses to deviate from it. ty lee, azula and zuko are her childhood friends? thats IT. thats all the friends she wants or needs. in her mind any change from that past is bad, wrong, and must be reversed back to safe, normal comfort. this is in part because she was happy and innocent and free right up until tom-tom was born - then she was the spare, seen not heard, not understood by her mother, choked into silence, captivity and an intense depressive state. tom-tom's arrival into her life is so bad that mai goes "ah yes, new people? or My People changing into something i didnt expirence before the age of 12? BAD. KILL WITH HAMMERS." and even though she does love her baby brother, she despises the circumstance he brought her. (she's far more like azula than either of them want to admit. they keep seeing glimpses of themselves in the other, like a shattered reflection of what they could have become - silent and meek, or unloved and monsterous. they never talk about it.)

the fire squad is her one and only support network, and she becomes uncomfortably co-dependant. no one else will do. no one else understands. they're comfortable, normal, the shining happy past that she wants to claw back to. she's loved by them, and understood implicity bc of their shared past. thats all she wants. so she's very, very intensely devoted to them, and especially to zuko. her and azula aren't emotional supports to each other, but they are indeed best friends. they both apprieciate each other's loyalty and stability. mai is comfortable with any change that happens around azula - or Her People - because azula is this steadfast, unmoving pillar in her life. azula values mai highly for her skill, intelligence and general disposition. they're the bitchest besties ever who murder for fun.

SO. if she literally cant handle ty lee, azula or zuko changing into something else. at all. then you can imagine her reaction to katara barrelling in and changing up the vibe of their foursome. mai is outright hostile to katara. she's irritable, grouchy, and does her utmost to pretend katara doesnt exist at all. in her mind, katara is forcing their group to change, taking azula away from their terrible little co-dependency circle. change? bad. threaten the new woman with knives. and quickly. make sure azula is apart from that new woman and back in the safe co-dependency circle. if anything changes - if azula changes - she'll turn into dust.

and on ty lee! she DOES. zuko and mai dating isnt too big a deal for her because they still pay attention to her, and the afformentioned co-dependant stability thing overrides her annoyance that they're not looking and seeing her. but if someone flirts with zuko, or mai? its over. shes throwing a tantrum, getting the person to flirt with HER instead, or flirting with zuko/mai. bc WHY is no one looking at her? helloooo???

mai and ty lee get along famously because mai hates change and people, and ty lee gets to hoard mai greedily to herself. its the perfect arrangement, she can farm all the attention she wants from mai and is guaranteed to it. and mai doesnt care about ty lee wandering off to other friendgroups because she always comes back. and it's funny, ty lee makes things not boring.

I’m glad you like it so much! As for the changes and headcanons this au provides, I have quite a few.

Zuko really wants to help his sister, but it’s very hard with his father looming over his shoulder 24/7 and he’s scared he’ll go back to being the ‘lucky to be bron’ failure of a prince. Azula just thinks he wants to humiliate her more and refuses his help. He’s also still the awkward teen we all know and love, but don’t fuck with him cuz he’s twice as terrifying in this au (yes he does have blue fire like canon Azula).

Despite his more gentle nature he becomes progressively more violent towards his sister as the story goes on. Eventually, after everyone’s betrayed him, he goes into his breakdown and believes everyone he’s ever known was just using him for their own gain.

Azula is also quite similar to her canon, plus a little crankiness and less confident. I didn’t really know what to do with her hair that didn’t make it look cursed so I kinda just left it like that for now😭

She’s much less homicidal than her canon counterpart, but she’s still not afraid to kill a man. She also becomes besties with Toph cuz I think those two would be good friends if they got along. But her true best friend is Ty Lee (they have a much stronger and healthier bond in this au), who eventually betrays Zuko first at the boiling rock before Mai joins her.

Lu Ten is pretty much like Iroh, because he’s trying his best to be just like his father and a good brotherly figure towards his cousins. He’s the only family Azula ever felt truly close to.

I’m still working on this au but this is pretty much all the important stuff for now!

Mai Wasn’t Supposed to be Azula’s Friend

My headcanon is that child Mai wasn’t brought into the royal kids’ lives for Azula initially. Ty Lee was paired up to be Azula’s friend and Mai was an arranged bride for Zuko. It would make sense considering her family status.

Ozai may have even been trying to use Zuko as a bargaining chip here to increase his political power by brokering an engagement—as is tragically common amongst royals—to get Ozai in with the warden of the Boiling Rock (Mai’s uncle) and an important noble working in government (Mai’s dad Ukano). Remember he gave Ukano governorship of Omashu. Especially considering Iroh is a beloved general and has sway with the military, Ozai may have been looking to bolster support amongst the nobility to counteract this and secure power for himself.

However, we see that kid Zuko was shy and preferred the company of mom to kids his age. Total momma’s boy. He didn’t seem interested in playing with his sister or his future bride.

So when Azula and Ty Lee noticed Mai sitting alone and ignored in the gardens, they scooped her up and made her one of theirs.

This is why Azula and Ty Lee are the besties and Mai sometimes comes off as the third wheel. But really, all three became great friends, though Mai always still harbored a crush on the boy she was expected to marry someday.

Zuko always considered Mai to be Azula’s friend due to this, and although he intellectually understood he was expected to marry her someday, he didn’t really process or think about it since he was too young to truly grasp what that means and entails. Thus why he didn’t think about Mai or show any signs of missing her during his banishment. Mai, on the other hand, had it put in her head by her parents what was expected of her to further dad’s political career and being a kid she eventually did come to develop a genuine crush on Zuko.

So Mai never forgot, and when they met again on the way back to the Fire Nation, she was all too eager to finally act on her childhood crush and claim Zuko as her boyfriend as he’d always meant to be. Zuko, on the other hand, hadn’t even thought about it in so long that it took him a while to warm up to the idea, especially with so much else going on in his head and heart.

Eventually Zuko does come to care for her very much, only for them to tragically start having problems as Mai loves the version of Zuko he’s trying to be to please Ozai, the version of him she remembers. The person Zuko desperately still wanted to be.

The person he can no longer deny he isn’t anymore.

All the more reason Azula felt so betrayed and hurt when Mai and even Ty Lee chose Zuko over her.

when Zuko snorts, a lil puff of smoke comes out his nose. I know it to be true. Iroh told me.

He has a rly sweet breathy laugh that sometimes goes silent prematurely. very giggle prone and he pretends to hate it, but if he actually did he would barbecue everybody so. checkmate.

This one might be a hot take but I feel like he might actually be great at pretending something doesn't tickle if it's one sensation in one place. I'm choosing this hill because I think it makes things so much funnier if the gaang is trying to catch him off-guard and can't. and he knows. and he's smug.

but, flipside to this coin, he's like a jumpy cat. if you do catch him off guard he will launch directly into the stratosphere and squeak. there's nothing he can do to recover.

if zuko knows you're going to tickle him he will giggle uncontrollably before you touch him, get mad that he's doing it, and then (rare phenomenon) angry giggle. very cute.

Zuko can't firebend if he's laughing because firebending needs air. When he throws his little tantrums or goes to do something reckless (and stupid), whoever is closest to him is quick to poke his sides and the air leaves him in this big woosh. If he tries to firebend (which he probably doesn't, he doesn't wanna hurt anyone), lil sparks come off his hands.

tickling Zuko is objectively funny because he curls up like a lil pillbug, but when you hit a bad spot he uncurls and every limb seeks violence. category six flailing event. Sokka comes back to camp with a black eye and Suki and Katara are ready for bloodshed, but he has to stumble through an explanation of why on earth he thought tickling Zuko was a good idea (worth it, no regrets. not pictured: toph smirking bc she could feel zuko's laughter reverberating through the ground)

mai does not know this about him until Ty Lee finds out. Mai takes full advantage and Zuko pretends to hate it with all his might.

i think if we're exiting the lil utopia bubble here for a sec zuko canonically probably hates being tickled. azula strikes me as the kind to torment him with it. but i'm choosing to remain within the bubble. i like the bubble.

zuko mirrors behaviors that he sees other gaang members doing to try and fit in. and i just. Zuko getting bold enough to poke someone and everyone is delighted because he's graduated to physical contact. and then he's like "why are you all looking at me like that"

i can one hundred percent see the gaang having like a 'days since zuko's last temper tantrum' counter or whatever. like as he mellows out it becomes harder to provoke him. Except one day Sokka goes too far and Zuko jumps him and everyone has a split-second fear that he's like genuinely snapped...until Sokka is shrieking and everything's fine actually. (the counter gets reset).

zuko and toph being touchy besties is everything to me actually and i like to think they are constantly irritating each other with lil pokes and stuff. toph likes to drape herself over Zuko at her own peril.

Aang sometimes won't take his training seriously because he's just not intimidated by Zuko anymore. Zuko's like. well. I can fix that. and aang Flees.

Zuko has so much respect for Suki and refuses to lay a hand on her and hurt her when they spar, but Suki's like. C'mon fireboy. Zuko remembers something about her that Sokka said in passing and he's like well! this will work! (i just have this visual of aang being like 'wow the kyoshi warriors are so cool zuko's so special getting to train with Suki'. meanwhile Zuko and Suki are in a tickle fight so intense that they've smashed and burnt furniture).

My opinion on Zuko Ships

Mai and Zuko are a good looking couple. I just don’t think Mai and Zuko are suitable emotionally. Zuko wants someone more expressive and appreciate his efforts and gifts. Mai didn’t like him with secrets and didn’t like his temper. Which would be bound to have more fights and always on and off.

Jin was so sweet and I felt that Zuko liked her. But knew she shouldn’t stay with her because of a Lee and being Lee. They would have been so cute. Wish the writers would have them together after the 100 year war and have Zuko tell her the truth and maybe she would’ve hear him out. She seems like an understanding type of girl. Maybe she knew he was a firebender and was lying about “Lee” thing. Zuko has even adapted life in Ba Sing Se.

Ty Lee and Zuko would be a Ship Tease. They are closer to age and grew up together. They are better as friends. Wish they would explore as a friendship more. I would see Mai with Ty Lee. Very popular and they would be so endgame in my book.

Katara and Zuko I love this ship as well as Katara and Aang. So much ship tease in the show. Not only that I see them as a couple but also as besties. This enemies to lovers would put me in a chokehold forrealll.

But Aang and Katara are so cute such a slow burn and the way they both call each other sweetie. So Aang and Katara are also perfect.

The more i think about it the more i would love to see a friendship dynamic between Aang and Ty Lee. They'd be such cute besties! Doing stretching exercises together, Ty Lee teaching Aang how to braid so he can surprise Katara with it later, Aang giving Ty Lee joyrides on Appa, Ty Lee showing an interest in air nomad culture and Aang happily teaching her everything. Idk it would be a great duo methinks

Does Sokka (in place of Zuko) also get a character development? Like, he's capturing the avatar but then turn into a good guy?

He actually does! Like Zuko in the canon he joins the "Gaang" (I need to find a new name for the gang lol) in the finale "book",that in this case will be called Water instead of Fire

And I definitely plan to make art and I'm also excited for more Katara,Suki and Yue as Azula,Mei and Ty Lee ^^

My issue with Zutara isn't JUST that it's problematic ship but also that the SHIPPERS are almost always problematic PEOPLE.For example,i ship Zukka and even Tyzula,though the latter more queerplatonically as a friendship thing with my longtime bestie-Yes,Zukka has a few of the same problems Zutara does and Tyzula's dynamic was much more unhealthy than Z/K ever was but when was the last time you saw Zukka shippers doing anything but vibing and being nice to others fans and celebrating and encouraging things like lgbt and neurodivergence/disability/mental illness headcanons?The only times i DO see them being mean it's to bigots in the fandom that have earned it or just joking around.And for Tyzula,the Azula and Ty Lee stans who ship it are pretty much always Aang defenders too because they understand that as a gnc boy of color he's as much rep as the woc are so they don't stand for unfair hate of him or Kataang and that's my number one priority when it comes to deciding to interact with other Atla fans or blocking them because of how violently racist the fandom has been about both for so long and most Tyzula stans are understanding that not everyone is comfortable shipping them even in aus so they don't harass people over it and just do their own thing.Zutaras love crying 'I'm allowed to enjoy problematic fiction!!!' but that means nothing when you treat REAL people badly over it because you're literally proving Zutara antis right to think you're gross and entitled losers by shipping it
