Apparently in my absence this post had its 1000-notes-iversary.
This time we get to see the culprit responsible for ruining our heroes' lives as well.
I've really missed you guys, by the way. I know I've said that already, but I'm serious. Once or twice this year I've been right on the brink of coming back but schedule stuff always keeps me from letting myself commit to that again, and that in turn has kept me from posting anything at all. But I've been in an unexpected drawing mood lately and so if I can get enough stuff to set up a queue we might pretend I'm back for a month or so sometime this year. Maybe. Hopefully. We'll see. No promises though. That's why I'm hiding this paragraph under the cut.
Transcription:
[Beren:] "Uhhh...barkeep...I think he's had enough now..."
[Tolkien:] "No, I don't think he has...!"

unpopular opinion i really think they got rid of nami’s joy and whimsy in the la. obviously it was strained up til arlong park in the anime cause she had arlong breathing down her neck and they had her trauma show out more in the la but still. where is my girlies silly !!
Nami suffering the consequences of being the only woman in the East Blue crew and Netflix being unable to write women with personalities so they have to make Nami the "mean/strict/responsible girl that takes care of the dumb men" because they're just sooo feminist and they looove empowered women (I am being sarcastic, btw).

I saw a post about this a hot minute ago and I'm so mad I can't find it BUT. While I LOVE Present Mic as a popular radio personality, there isn't really that much concrete evidence to support that idea. (Which, to be fair, there isn't a lot of concrete evidence about the careers/public perception of a lot of pros outside of All Might, Endeavor, sorta Hawks, etc., so you can pry that headcanon out of my grasp with a crowbar and so on.) That being said, I think a really fun angle to explore re: Present Mic as a radio host-pro hero-UA teacher (that I may or may not have the bare bones of a fic about👀) is the idea that Mic debuted as a very successful hero and entertainer, and experienced pretty steady growth in both aspects of his career for a few years before he took a teaching position at UA.
Hero rankings are based on incidents resolved, and can be damaged by taking any amount of time off (such as when the Wild Wild Pussycats took, what? A couple of months off from hero-ing? and their ranking plummeted by several hundred places). Teaching is time consuming; it's the kind of job that often necessitates 'bringing work home' with you in the form of grading, lesson planning, etc. Obviously it would cut into Mic's focus on his hero work and his radio show, and obviously that would affect not only his actual ranking but how much attention his career/persona garnered. After all, there is an influx of new heroes every single year when hero courses across the country graduate. It takes work to stay relevant in this universe.
So now I'm thinking of like. Present Mic but with the level of fame/popularity of a celebrity who was big a handful of years ago, but you don't hear so much about anymore. Like, yeah, they're still active, and still have a (often very dedicated) fanbase, but they've kind of been shuffled out of the spotlight a little bit. This also makes his lackluster reception at the entrance exam so much funnier imo, because those students would have been like 8-9 when he stopped just doing hero/radio stuff and started teaching, but they're teenagers now and Present Mic is sooo not in anymore.

Have you ever seen those comparisons of two plushies, one kept brand new and safe and one well loved for a whole childhood? Spindle kinda looks like the well loved ones sometimes
Honestly he's really just built like that but I argue he was way more skrunkly as a kid. like here's a baby pic of him at 4 months old when I had just gotten him.
He definitely is well loved! Hes just stuck looking like a toddler decided to get some kid scissors and give him the barber special

the thing that really gets me though is the tragedy surrounding dimentio's betrayal and the aftermath
he probably had some reason he wanted to join count bleck aside from whatever personal agenda he may have had. after all, he came to him looking to join his cause. i can't imagine how he must have felt getting rejected. why not him? why must he be so outcast as to not even be accepted by the misfits and rejects? and why would count bleck not need a master of dimensions if he intended to create a perfect new world after destroying all worlds? world and dimension tend to be interchangeable within the game so it would be very suspicious.
so of course when count bleck comes back asking for his help, he's suspicious. he still accepts, of course, he still wants a perfect world, he still wants to believe that's the goal. but he can't get over that. can't get over how, despite the count assuring him his participation is vital, he was outright rejected during his first attempt to join the cause. he has to figure out why this is the case. has to find out what's going on, or at least be able to assure himself that it's nothing.
and he does find out. count bleck never intended to make a perfect world. he never intended to make anything at all. only to destroy it. and what can he do at that point? he can't just leave. leaving now does nothing to stop count bleck. but if he just stops count bleck, well, then he's just back at square one, isn't he?
so he hatches a plan. a beautiful, amazing, dare i say perfect plan. he can stop the count and still get his perfect world, the perfect world that the count had promised all of them.
it fails.
of course it fails. of course it fails and of course it's to something he couldn't possibly have foreseen. and it probably guts him to realize that the reason the pure hearts came back, the reason he lost everything, was because they were all so sickeningly loyal to the count. to the very same man that betrayed them.
that they would scorn and even despise him all while clinging to the side of the true traitor.
and it's not even that the count didn't care for them. but it wasn't a little white lie and it wasn't an accident. he had enlisted their help long before he grew to care for them and by then it was far too late to give away his true intentions. by then he wouldn't be able to handle them leaving once they knew. and in a sense his sacrifice was just as much his attempt of making it up to them as it was a true change of heart.
but even now that everything's over they wouldn't hear dimentio out and i know this. the only one who might would be nastasia, who already knew count bleck's real plan. mimi hates liars and o'chunks probably isn't too fond of traitors, considering the reason he agreed to join the count in the first place. neither of them would see a reason to listen to dimentio. dimentio himself is too proud and too stubborn to ever admit he may not have been entirely justified or to ever come to them with a sincere apology, and they're too devoted to count bleck and too distrustful of dimentio to listen to anything he has to say on the matter.
so they'll forever stay devoted to the man who had lied to them from the very beginning.

"It wasn't a bomb, Jes, it was a minor contact explosion. I think you're being a bit dramatic."
"Me?" said Jesper, clearly affronted. "Me?" he repeated, waving his arms at Wylan, who could do little more than lean slightly away from him in the narrow space. "I'm being dramatic?" He scoffed, then shifted a step back to gesture at the shattered porcelain, cracked tiles, and scorched wall in the tight corner at his right. "You blew up our toilet over a spider..."
Wylan crossed his arms and turned away, cheeks red. "It was self-defence," he mumbled. "It bit me in the—" He stopped abruptly, cheeks impossibly redder as his eyes dropped to the floor. "Never mind. I just needed to make sure it was..."
Jesper raised an eyebrow. "Dead?" he suggested, but Wylan didn't answer. He was staring at something in the rubble, breathing starting to quicken. Jesper followed his gaze and saw it just as Wylan all but tackled him into the wall in a bid to reach the door: there was a large brown spider emerging, seemingly unscathed, from between a pile of broken floor tiles.
"Saints, all that and you didn't even manage to kill it?" Jesper called after Wylan, who'd gone scrambling down the hallway. He rolled his eyes to the ceiling, then regarded the spider with a tilt of his head. "Doesn't seem fair that I'd kill you now after what you've survived, so come on, hurry up..." Jesper got down on his knees and reached a hand out for the spider to climb on. "Let's get you outside before my dearly beloved can get his hands on more explosives..."
