Today’s a good a day as any to give a semi-gentle reminder that Essek is a multi-faceted character and him being bitchy and canonically Neutral Evil for a portion of time does not preclude him from also being sweet in other moments. Like his whole character arc was about growing from being the aloof Shadowhand who didn’t care about anyone or anything but himself and his research. Depicting him as caring about things and people other than that is fine and good actually.
Or, in the wise wise words of Brennan Lee Mulligan…

okay this is so small but makes me really happy. taketora just got done talking about how much he admires tanaka and how cool and "manly" he is, which like makes sense right, both tanaka and taketora are always being shown as these like loud "boy's boys" archetypes who do everything with power, talk about girls, and emphasize "guts" and "manliness," so obviously taketora would respect tanaka
but then he immediately turns to also think about how much he admires fukunaga in the same way—fukunaga who doesn't display any of those same qualities that taketora was just admiring about tanaka. fukunaga is quiet, fairly low-key and doesn't flaunt anything ever. dude just goes around making weird puns that 1 people often barely even hear and 2 apparently seem to baffle everyone. but taketora sees all of that and sees how fukunaga still shows up and gets the job done more than successfully—he's one of the top point getters on the team—and taketora respects him for all of that, still calls him a "man's man" and tbh more than respects him, he admires him and sees him as a rival
and idk that just makes me happy, like 1 it's a nice small way of furudate saying that yeah "manly" is a thing that's important to taketora but it doesn't just mean one stereotypical thing—like it's showing that taketora isn't as one dimensional as we would have thought and that he sees things from multiple perspectives (we also saw this from him back during the whole "guts" thing with kenma and how he respects him too)—and it's also an example of seeing fukunaga from another perspective too. it's because he's so low-key that even we as readers have probably barely noticed how much of a rock he is for the team, but if you got back through their matches you can see how often he does score—he's quiet but he's always there. and i just like that furudate takes a moment to not only acknowledge fukunaga but to do it from taketora's pov in order to really hit it home to us how true it must be

i'm getting towards the end of the skypeia arc, & i'd like to say just how much i adore the way the female strawhats have been treated.
just... every aspect of how the way their characters have been previously contextualized influences the story-line is treated with a masterful amount of consideration. we're given so many layers to both of them that enrich not only their characters specifically, but the arc, and the one piece world as a whole. without nami & robin having their specific skills, and their specific values, without those being built upon, the story would have come to a halt.
you could not have skypeia without nami & robin being who they are as individuals. not just because they never would've gotten there without nami, but also because the way these women think is itself foundational to the machinations of the arc as a whole.
to be totally upfront, if you think any other strawhats were more central to the skypeia arc than nami & robin were you are full-on fucking lying to yourself.
#obligatory disclaimer that i’m aware luffy is the protagonist & a lot of interesting stuff is explored w him. this isn’t abt him though.#part of me wonders if this is an aspect of why people will write off this arc sometimes tbh... like that & the political themes.#but yeah anyway i get why people say that for all there are 100% misogynistic tendencies in oda's writing & character design#it is very very hard to say that he as an individual is an ideological misogynist. like the level of care he puts into his female cast mem#-ers generally speaking & how he approaches what existing as a multi-dimensional individual would look like in their specific contexts is#like... in a lot of ways still something that is unprecedented across all forms of media.#but also not the point but anyone who says nami in particular doesnt get real fights/is unskilled um... no you're wrong read her fight in#alabasta & then all of skypeia.#like in alabasta she takes on arguably a stronger opponent than sanji when considering the structuring of BW. not only that but she does s#with a weapon she has never used before while actively reading the instruction manual. and she WINS. she wins based on sheer intellect &#the ability to utilize skills the audience already knows she has. the pre-existing basic fighting skills she's introduced with are elabora#-ed upon by incorporating her skill w navigation. same with the way her cunning is used in skypeia to cover her lack of sheer brute. &#the best part about it is she's fucking tough in a way that makes sense! she isn't strong/weak just for the sake of positioning her as such#it is thoughtful & it strengthens her as a character rather than just like giving the power-scaler types smth to mindlessly chew on.#like do i wish nami got to fight more & take a more active role in that regard even if i don't think she needs to be a fighter in the same#sense as the monster trio? yes absolutely. i'm guessing this is going to be smth that bothers me potentially even more with robin.#but that does not mean her fights are not masterfully written when she gets them or that she isn't tough as a bag of nails.#respect my darling woman or die.#skypeia#nico robin#nami#grey's one piece tag

not completely finished with s3 yet but i just finished To Catch a Mouse and i need a moment to dive into poppy and ian’s relationship dynamic because holy shit
i just think it’s so fucking interesting the way they view each other, because it’s clear they both think very highly of the other but they react to it in very very different ways
for example, poppy obviously has a lot of respect for ian as the mastermind of mq, and she shows it mainly in wanting to be like him. she looks up to him, both as a mentor and a friend, and wants to be where he is one day. she wants to design her own game, to have visions of great things like he does. she wants to be cool like him and control a workspace like him and joke around at his expense the same way he jokes around at hers. poppy wants so badly to just be like ian because she sees what he’s accomplished and thinks it’s fucking awesome. she thinks he’s fucking awesome, she has since she was a nerdy little 19 y/o MIT student bouncing in her seat to get to talk to him.
and ian has respect for poppy as well, but it’s surrounded in a thick, thick coating of jealousy. ian knows that poppy is insanely talented, he knows that mq would be absolutely nothing without her. she built the entire thing, but he can’t let her have claim to a single bit of it, not even a fucking shovel. he is terrified of poppy because he knows she’s better than him, she’s smarter, more talented, and has the ability to not only dream up a game but then actually make it. he thinks so highly of her that he actively tears her down with little comments every chance he gets, but as soon as she gets upset with him he steps back, gives her a little validation and a little encouragement, and manipulates the situation until she feels crazy for being mad. for gods sake, the man’s biggest fear in the entire world is poppy overtaking him, because he knows she could and very well just might, and his huge fucking ego can’t allow that to happen. it’s safer for him to control her, to keep her engineering his vision, so that she can never surpass him.
and all poppy fucking wants is to be like him, with a legacy of her own.
:/

Here's a soft uwuwu HC as well to, uh... even the asshole/nice scale? Jk, no, it probably won't. Anyway
He likes watching the birds on his balcony in the morning. Every now and then, he'll scatter some breadcrumbs along the balustrade for them.

cecil palmer is the embodiment of not having the choice of choosing — and how all the choices that get taken from you, either by your own hand or by some external force, are versions of yourself you will never get to meet, because they never existed. not negatively, not positively but just as a simple fact. you are the path that you have walked and are walking.

“I have a job. In the beginning, I thought it was important, that it could help a lot of people, hopefully even bring my wife back to me. But no matter what I do, nothing gets better. If anything, it only gets worse.” - Garcia Flynn, Timeless, S1 ep. 15 “Public Enemy No.1″

No idea why everyone makes Mephisto out to be the villain of One More Day as if Peter wasn’t the sole reason for everything that was happening in the first place. He unmasked. He put Aunt May in danger. He heard Mephisto out. And ultimately, he agreed to the deal

i love fucked up characters so much, i love characters who are messy and so imperfect but don't even necessarily try to fix their imperfections because they're human and their imperfections are part of them, other people can try to fix them and maybe even they go through phases of trying to cut these pieces from themselves but they're so. so painfully human. they will never be perfect. they do things wrong and they hurt people and they hurt themselves and some of the pain will never be fixed and nothing is ever just easy. i love characters that reflect the messy existence of being human so beautifully. i also love characters who are all of this and know it inside but try to hide it because they know the imperfections are ugly and hard to deal with and it's easier for everyone and themselves if they try to be perfect

dark x men is actually kind of campy tbh. one thing is im a little annoyed at how like, over the top Kenji's silliness is, but he is definitely a bit of a silly, over the top character. I guess I just miss when he was a bit more somber to balance out his dark silliness, also he seems kind of dumbed down? he was pretty intellectual in generation hope. idk mixed feelings!

maybe I'm just completely dicknotized but tony dalton's performance as lalo is so layered and complex, it could have easily been a one note charming psychopath villain and still been FUN but he brings some genuine pathos to it? it's wild. anyway. i love lalo <3

HI CEEEEE HAPPY BLORBO THURSDAYYY what is one thing that might surprise us about Quil? :3
hiiii thanks for the ask<33
part of me wants so say 'well it won't be a surprise then if I Tell you', but I'm already saying so much anyway, so whatever lollll
what might surprise you about him is his uhhh not entirely sure what word to use here... 'promiscuity' isn't entirely right, but a similar vibe. on all accounts, he's very prim and proper, so you'd think he'd get scandalized or embarrassed easily by more intimate things, but no lol. he knows what he wants and how to get it, and has no reservations about it<3 Endra, on the other hand....lmao
