taken out of context, Goncharov is actually one of the funniest characters of all time.
he refuses to have sex with his hot wife. she invites him to dinner with Sofia (and was almost CERTAINLY going to propose a threesome) but he's like no thank you. i have to go stare into Andrey's eyes for 3 hours. he gets a motorcycle and crashes it 10 minutes later. he gives a eulogy at the funeral of a guy he killed. he picks a fight with a grandfather clock and the clock wins. his wife loses the mansion in a poker game because he was busy throwing a tantrum in his man cave and then she comes home and points a gun at him and he looks at her like a middle-aged suburban dad whose kids just broke the TV remote for the fifth time.

the thing is, toey never initiates emotional intimacy with q. he'll wonder for a year what kind of music q listens to but never even think to directly ask. he'll bug q about all sorts of tips to make his art better without revealing why he chose to pursue art at all. he'll collapse onto q's lap when he is drunk and extremely tired but won't ask to sleep next to him or even try to come up with an excuse to when he's sober. he doesn't actually ask q to come with him to the park - he asks peem and then peem asks q. toey will nag q with his tone or with his teasing or with his eyes? but never ask for what he actually wants
but even when q (or peem, or tan) takes initiative to make their intimacy possible, toey just seems happy and content to be held as close or as far as q is willing to have him.
If q came all this way to teach toey how to shade, if q is worried about toey being in the studio alone at night, if q (maybe) wants to learn how to skateboard, if q is worried about toey getting kicked off of the bed by peem, toey interprets it as exactly that and nothing more

Okay so here’s my thoughts on the staffcon thing.
I still think collapsing reblogs so posts look more like other social media isn’t gonna work as a feature but they will probably roll them back a little and at least add a toggle off for it if they try it and enough people submit feedback. Edit: this is actually less of an issue, most of the discussion is based on a misrepresentation of what’s happening. They’re just making it easier to scroll past long posts. EDIT AGAIN: actually some people already have the initial roll out of the feature and it. Is bad.
I think submitting feedback is a takeaway. There was a pretty clear effort to just remind the user base that there are real humans on the other side of a paycheck having to read and respond to the inputs of every feedback method on the site, which is fair. It’s easy to be an asshole online in any semi anonymous platform and that is something that tumblr culture takes a certain bloodthirsty pleasure in.
And yes, of course, user complaints about issues such as accessibility and the many ongoing glitches and bots and the search function, etc. are valid and do need to be addressed. But at the very least it would be cool if we as users maybe try to cultivate a slightly less pitchforky social norm when submitting feedback about changes to the site. The ceo is not reading every @ to his blog. One of his employees is. The people reading all of the feedback are just people doing their jobs. All jobs suck under capitalism, maybe we could try not to make their jobs actively worse.
Would you be rude to an overworked server in a restaurant? No? Cool also try to not be a dick to the person getting paid to answer customer or user complaints.
Related to that, funding. Many current and former members of staff have been pretty frank about funding in the past. The company is trying to at the very least breakeven, which not a single company who has owned tumblr has managed because the hosting fees for this site are insane due to all of the stuff on it.
If they don’t get it to breakeven they’ll hopefully best case just open source the website which is a method they’ve done in the past. And it would probably work, and then the website would to my understanding be being maintained by users. Now this is where my understanding gets fuzzy so anyone with more knowledge of how this would shake out feel free to chime in. But my understanding is that the source code for the site would be opened up and maintained by the community likely through mostly volunteer work. I would guess largely uncompensated.
So personally I think maybe the vitriolic response to every change they make going forward to try and monetize the site and pay even some of the cost of operation is perhaps a bit overblown, because they’re still trying to find a way to keep paying those people to work on tumblr, and I think people continuing to be paid for the work they do is better than volunteers doing unpaid labor.
I do also think there’s a secret third option for automattic and every other company finding themselves with a worse outlook now the Silicon Valley bubble has started to really burst, and that is for all existing staff members to unionize and then turn the whole thing into a worker coop. Much more stable organizational structures. Worker coops are also one of my favorite short term solutions to many other systemic problems we are currently experiencing.
I do hope this site continues to exist for many years, especially as it is one of the only places on the internet where the culture makes it safer to talk about some of the more permanent and long term solutions to various systemic issues that function within societies. Also funny text posts.

I'd be okay if John Darnielle migrated here from Twitter. there's at least 3 albums worth of material here for him to work with I reckon.

Tumblr is objectively terrible but I'd never leave because of the peer review process blog post chains go through that produce the most strange and hilarious outcomes paired with a fascinating longevity of inside humor.

Shit I Love About Sea Duke - Day 3: He Writes His Own Speeches
Sir has always written his own speeches for stuff, some of which have been published in an actual book (that I own!). He has Thoughts™ and it don't make sense to him to have someone else write about the topic at hand; he wants to say what he's got to say in his own words.
Also let's be real it leads to some good comedy (see yesterday's post).
He's not the best at spelling, something I was surprised to learn considering having to keep so many logs of events while in the Royal Navy. This of course has led to a few spats as I'd proofread it and he'd get it back with a bunch of red marks. He refuses to use spellcheck because "we've always done it this way," which I find incredibly endearing, and it's a good way for us to discreetly spend time together while traveling.

Feedback on the new tumblr design that I actually sent to tumblr
Just for kicks, and writing practice. They'll probably be too busy laughing to take it seriously, but what the hell, eh?
***
So, yeah. The new design. I hate it. Listen. If I wanted to be on Twitter or whatever it's called this month, I would be. Also I'd shoot myself. This is reason one for me (and a lot of people) to hate it. I'm talking hissing and heaving upon first sight, here. Total visceral revulsion.
The other thing tho? I'm an old web dev. And that thing is not usable in the slightest. I'm talking strictly worse than your old one, which wasn't perfect either.
The activity panel opens over the timeline, hiding an important part of the experience for no good reason
Same thing with messages
The right pane scrolls with the TL, rendering 30% of your screen real estate useless as soon as you scroll past. Most of your userbase has infinite scroll, doesn't it?
Searchbar is tiny and in an unintuitive place
"Create" button is in the worst place ever
Did I mention I hate Twitter?
See my cheeky little screenshot for details. Sorry about the handwriting.
Tumblr media
So yeah. I get that you wanna be the new Twitter killer, but a) that's not gonna happen, and b) jesus christ, people are fleeing for a REASON. This is like seeing your neighbor's house on fire and thinking you should do a similar thing with your lighting situation.
(Now I know this has a slim chance of getting actioned on, or even read, but I hope whoever reads this gets a kick out of it at least 😛 You can only hate something so much if you love it first! Big ups from a fellow pixel pusher.)

...y'think I went overboard with this? 😆
