My top ten favorite horror movies of the last ten years

This recent decade has been a good time for horror fans with lots of variety and Gothic horror available. Here is a list of my top ten favorite horror films of the last ten years.

10. Ghostbusters: Afterlife. I love Ghostbusters Afterlife but it's genuinely painful to watch. It was a sweet return to the original Ghostbusters franchise and a very touching goodbye to Harold Ramis. Egon was always my favorite Ghostbuster and Phoebe is exactly the sort of character I actually wanted to see in a woman Ghostbusters team. I would put this further on the list but this one is difficult for me to watch. It's weird to want to cry when watching a Ghostbusters movie.

9. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. This movie (thanks to its first teaser trailer) gave me a new appreciation for Bananarama’s Cruel Summer song. It also felt like an episode of The Real Ghostbusters animated series, a childhood favorite. I always appreciate new Ghostbusters content in the original continuity and this was a delightful popcorn movie. It was fun and much lighter than Ghostbusters Afterlife. I actually think Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the better film but this one is easier to re-watch.

8. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - A long awaited and not-at-all disappointing sequel to Beetlejuice. This was a fun, surreal movie and it felt like Tim Burton had truly returned to himself as he had been with the show Wednesday. Beetlejuice, the powerful poltergeist, is still obsessed with Lydia, and is willing to play hero if it means she’ll marry him.

7. The menu. Imagine if you were the date of someone attending a meal hosted by a maniacal and deranged chef who plans on killing everyone in attendance. Do you think ordering a classic hamburger might save your life?

6. Five Nights at Freddy’s. The long over-due movie adaptation of the Five Nights at Freddy’s video game. Yes, it has some 80s style horror cliches but I liked it. 80s Animatronic Chuck E. Cheese style characters possessed by the souls of murdered children. That’s pretty much all you need to know.

5. M3gan. An evil AI robot doll because obsessed with the little girl she was given to. Yes, it’s cheesy. Yes, it’s predictable. But damn it, it’s fun. The only thing I don’t like is that it does have an animal death.

4. Abigail - The little girl of a wealthy crime boss is kidnapped but it’s fast revealed that this crime lord is actually a vampire lord and this little girl is his assassin and she likes to play with her food. She does have a heart and feels sympathy for at least one of her would-be victims.

3. Renfield – Dracula’s long-time henchman / Familiar / half-turned-vampire minion, Renfield has finally decided he’s had enough with their toxic relationship and wants out. Nicolas Cage plays a delightfully campy Dracula.

2. The Shape of Water. - Guillermo del Toro prefers to consider this a supernatural romance but I think it's got enough scary elements to count as a horror film. If this had been labeled a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon I would have believed it. It’s closer to being a respectful remake of the classic monster movie than the recent Wolfman movie from Blumhouse was.

1. It's a tie between Monster Mash (2024 from Asylum pictures) and The Invitation (2022 film, not the 2015 film.)

Monster Mash - A cheesy and low budget mockbuster from Asylum originally released to be their equivalent of Abigail it actually was more of a "What would happen if the classic monsters were The Avengers." And frankly, I loved it. This is the sort of thing I would have loved as a kid. It's kind of on par with Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

The premise is Dracula's daughter is kidnapped so Dracula recruits the other classic monsters to help him rescue her. Dr. Frankenstein intends to steal aspects of all the classic monsters to make himself a powerful, and indestructable, immortal body.

The film is extremely low budget but is a loving homage to Universal's classic monster movies.

The Invitation - Please know this is about the 2022 film, not the 2015 film. This is a subtle sequel to the Dracula novel in which a young woman named Evie takes a DNA test to see if she has any living family. She gets invited to a wedding being held by English cousins unaware that these cousins actually are acolytes of Count Dracula, who seeks a new bride.

The movie is subtle and hopes you catch the many clues that he is Dracula. Edit: I forgot to add Werewolf by Night. I think it counts. Disney / Marvel sneakily released a good Gothic horror movie in the guise of a retro-style Halloween special. Black and white version is better than the "colorized" version.
