I legit think it's honestly a result of younger individuals on this website being so wrapped up in the black and white use of label to justify a narrowed world-view. Like I'm 32 years old and it's taken me a long time to unlearn a lot of biases and judgments I had about identity, sexuality, and everything else. So in that way, I understand why they're so adamant at policing something like a fictional character who they want to remain so one-noted that they don't feel strange for being the one who wants them to be that way. But at the same time, the presence of an identity/sexuality spectrum is something that one eventually comes to terms with as they grow older and realizes that people are very often shifting, growing, changing entities that can experience such a range of emotion, understanding, and sense of self that to slap a perma-label on someone and insist that they can never be anything else seems so restrictive and nonsensical. I am an aromantic/asexual individual who has come to that conclusion over several years of self discovery and investigation. I still have some modicum of attraction to all genders and I love to explore facets of myself through fictional characters that I connect with and can play with like little fantasy dolls in ways that I would absolutely never be interested in experiencing for myself as a real life human being. It just does not thrill me. But to be able to write and craft a character - whether or not it is my original character - that can traverse those obstacles, hurdles, and exploratory notions FOR me is TONS of fun and honestly a very healthy thing to do! I'm not interested in outright bullying children for being prickly and annoying - because they ARE children, for the most part, and I want to give them an opportunity to grow the hell up LOL. But I think that there is room to understand and learn that IT'S OKAY to write about silly little characters in ways that may not necessarily make sense to their original intent - but if they make sense to YOU and you are not producing real harm in that exploration of the character - then, like. Do whatever you want, man. That's not to say that there are not topics which I think very much toe the line as to what's acceptable to share publicly on something like a public website/forum as a silly ha-ha hobby, but there is always room for nuance and critical consumption of media; even unofficial media. ANYWAY. thank you for coming to my ted talk. <3

so, i have thought more about what we now know about botw2 and honestly, setting aside the smaller things i am not a fan of (like the building aspect) my biggest gripes about it are the plot looking like its gonna be very generic, especially regarding ganondorf, while i hoped it would perhaps finally give us a little more interesting take instead good vs evil; and the oh so mysterious figure you see in in the trailer very likely to be hylia, since shes mentioned constantly in the first game (among other things like her design being pretty much a carbon copy of zelda for the most boring reasons imaginable)
and no its not just bc of my stupid little fanworks (that i do bc i love the franchise, as much as i am critical of it, it comes from being very passionate about it, hence me working my fan lore around the canon so it doesnt disturb it much, its more meant to expand it on parts i think are a little lacking without me trying to sound superior, literally just as an act of love (and a little spite ill admit that) to add something to it)- BUT bc i have little hope they would do anything more than just going full blown "this monstrous beast is pure inherently evil, and this is the pure inherently good white little girl goddess whos just protecting her god given perfect and unshakable good tm monarchy" with no little to no nuance (theres also alot more to be critical of the general structure and implications like racism, orientalism, nationalism, that while i can see alot of wrong or questionable things in the games i lack the eloquence to talk about in its full range) yes i am personally biased bc i just .. hate that kind of story/worldbuilding structure, but i dont think im the only one who would think of it as boring and .. disappointing?
i dont need ganondorf to be redeemed, i dont need him to be the good himbo bf that some people think all ganondorf stans want, i just want him to be more than to shout "i will conquor this kingdom bc i am evil and want it" and send a horde of monsters after you, at the very least id want the game to just aknowledge that there must be a reason for it, why it turned out like this
the zelda series and its world has so much potential, which is probably a reason for its popularity in fanworks, but also keeps not using it, no i dont expect a company like nintendo to deliver on all my hopes, of course not, im not that delusional, but the further i think and learn about this universe and concepts they created i find myself asking "why" more and more where the games never elaborate, never question
i like a clear structure, i like when your choices dont have a big or any impact on the story bc i want to live the story, not worry about every decision like i already do every second of my life IRL, i want to partake in a movie, in a theater piece i can influence the pace of but not change the outcome, yet i feel kind of ... ignored? let down? asking why and how, how do they know this is right and this is wrong, how do they keep enacting this seeing it never works out, keep saying defeat this evil, but evil yet returns stronger than before over and over, how do they never ask "is this the right way?", they say "we need to kill it more next time"
i know they are fictional little characters made up to sell a game, with a convevient plot point to ever repeat the same structure, but it cant be wrong to say "i love this world, i want to see and know more, i want to see it grow and change, break the cycle and be better, show me characters not puppets"
theres very surely nuances and ideas i am sorely missing bc i lack the knowledge of japanese as a language, culture, and mythology, but i dont think it invalidates all that i feel for it ..
.. right?

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ♥️
Oh gosh, this is so sweet!! Thank you!
This took forever to put together, because tbh I’m overly critical of my own writing and it’s touch to look back on my work after I’ve written it, but I’m sure those of y’all who follow me will not be surprised to see most of this at all.
Hilariously, none of these are the pieces that are particularly beloved by readers — in fact, some of them have the lowest hit/kudos counts across my entire AO3 profile. And hilariously, only one of them is explicitly a Kastle fic, which seems like the only thing I ever write anymore, lol.
But hey, in no particular order:
language barrier — Maya Lopez & Frank Castle, gen, rated G. This spun off my excitement from the Hawkeye finale over Christmas, and is a short little piece of Maya coming to Frank for help after being injured. Frank doesn’t speak ASL, but he can’t not help a kid in need (Frank Castle, magnet for women in distress), so he does his best to learn. I just love Maya and Frank as a friendship, and I’m proud of writing a no-dialogue story while also getting Frank’s inner voice down fairly well. It’s also the first installment in what is slowly spiraling into a Thunderbolts concept I’m working on behind the scenes — which is really just an excuse to give Frank Castle a bunch of adoptive daughters, lol.
dead ringer — Boba Fett & Fennec Shand & Omega, gen, rated G. This was written for a Big Bang event for Book of Boba Fett, and is one of the few Star Wars fics I’ve written that isn’t some kind of modern day AU to allow me to avoid writing the nuances of sci-fi. It boils down to Boba searching for his fellow clone/sister, and there’s notes of Fennec/Boba in there, but it’s mostly a character piece for Boba, and I’m very proud of both my worldbuilding and the dialogue, particularly Fennec’s narration, since I’d never written for her before — I think this took me like, three days to finish despite being 7.5k.
hold on — Frank Castle/Maria Castle & Frank Castle/Karen Page, rated G. This was the brainchild of a conversation with one of my besties, and also partially out of spite because I was upset that there are virtually no Punisher fics (especially not recently) that touch on Frank’s relationship with Maria beyond just her death and the days leading up to it. The conceit is that Karen finds one of Maria’s old mixtapes that Frank had kept, and the song triggers a memory for Frank, of dancing with Maria to “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips, hence the title. There’s just something about the tone of this one that I really adore, and Maria is such a fun character to write, even though I’ve only ever done it in flashback — see also my hungry heart piece from recently. She’s so feisty and full of personality, and this fic really successfully pairs her with Karen and establishes that Frank can have two loves of his life without having to shove one to the side for the other.
a prize for rotten judgement — Oberyn Martell/Ellaria Sand, rated G. Ah yes, my other OTP. There is virtually no content for Oberyn and Ellaria as a ship on the Internet, so I took it upon myself to come up with a hitman AU for the two of them where Ellaria’s a surgeon, and this piece sees her sewing up Oberyn’s bullet wounds on her couch. I absolutely adore Ellaria in the same way that I do Maria Castle, and the dialogue and worldbuilding in this are just spot-on to me. I don’t like Game of Thrones at all, but it’s difficult to find Oberyn content that isn’t painfully oversexualized, and nigh on impossible to find Ellaria content at all, so I’m particularly proud of this corner of fandom that I’ve created.
tramps like us — Wanda Maximoff & Frank Castle, gen, rated G. My most recent piece, this was the result of me seeing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and going “god, Wanda needs to sit down and have a talk with Frank because their trauma is so similar”. One of my favorite things to write is a good character piece where two people are able to just talk without much at all happening, and this is just that. I really nailed Frank’s voice here, and this piece feels cathartic for a lot of reasons, not least of which being the fact that I will always defend women in film going apeshit. Also possibly part of that Thunderbolts concept if I ever get around to it, lol.
Honorary sixth place goes to you look like bad news (i gotta have you), which is the first in a series of fluffy Shane Walsh/Original Character fics I wrote entirely on impulse. It was my first foray into like, real, honest-to-god rom com writing, which is not something I’m normally half-decent at. But that sucker (which was initially supposed to be one chapter and turned into 16k and three chapters, oops) was so much fun and opened up an avenue for me to write easy, no pressure stories between projects if I need to blow off some steam.

La Squadra HCs for if they get a team member with an art-based stand? (Thinking like how Kakyoin was able to harm Jotaro with his painting in part 3? I've always thought that could be an interesting stand in full!)
Lethal Creativity
La Squadra x Reader (GN), Platonic/Romantic (Interpretable), SFW
Context: For the sake of clarity, the reader's stand ability is defined as the power to manifest events such as physical harm/healing, the creation of new objects in a person's possession, and other occurances within limits, through visual illustration of these happening. It is limited by the inability to manipulate free will or create new animate beings, as well as the considerable level of detail in the illustrations required for the power to work, making the stand time-consuming to use.
Formaggio- For a stand as simple as 'make things go small', Formaggio sure does put a lot of creativity into using his powers. From crushing a person underneath a car expanded from inside them, to seeking the aid of usually harmless animals to take a minitiarised target out, Formaggio knows how to take a innocuous power and turn it into something flexible and deadly. For this reason, he can see immediately the potential of your stand, and is often the first to suggest the end goal of your plans when you are just starting out with a new drawing. Though he isn't always right you have to admire his thinking. A lot of people tend to take Formaggio for an idiot, which to be fair off the job he sometimes is, but there's a real quick streak to Formaggio when he needs it, which few other than you get to see.
Illuso- You quickly find yourself paired with Illuso on your more high-risk missions, due to the retreat offered by his mirror world. Watching from the safety of Illuso's dimension lets you work on orchestrating a target's doom without the distraction of having to worry about being caught. Unfortunately however, Illuso rarely lets you focus in peace as you shelter in the mirror world, pestering you frequently for more information on what you're doing and asking about your drawing techniques, without really listening to your response. Truth is, it feels weird for him to have someone other than a victim around in his world, and he feels compelled to talk to them as a result. He is enthralled as you draw out how it is your target will perish, the feeling of a predator on the hunt he too can relate to well, through all his years of watching victims through the mirror.
Prosciutto- The more the two of you brain-storm, the more applications you can think of for your stand as support for Prosciutto's missions. The Grateful Dead's two main flaws are slowness and imprecision, and your stand is perfect for creating small, quick-to-draw implements to deal with unexpected problems when his deadly power is at work. For instance, it only takes you half a minute to draw up a bag of ice to save someone from becoming collatoral damage you absolutely must avoid, and it doesn't take much longer to create a simple trap for if the target calls in backup during the slow process of dying through Grateful Dead's powers. You soon make an excellent team, well-versed in each other's needs and communications. It's only natural the two of you would become friends.
Pesci- Prosciutto encourages his apprentice to spend time with you on missions, since the operation of your stand often shows simplified, easy to pick up on, techniques of assassination Pesci can hopefully pick up on himself. Pesci is in awe as your plans slowly come in to fruition culminating in a spectacular demise for your target. He can tell you must be an incredibly intelligent person to come up with the sort of things you do, and frequently mentions wishing he could have ideas as good of yours. He never knows where to even begin with a mission unless someone else tells him! You are confused by this however, as every time you see Pesci in action you only see a skilled, competant assassin. Really, you think he just has issues with his confidence. You only hope you can help him see that.
Melone- His immediate affinity to you is strong because there are many similarities between your stands in terms of practical implications of their powers. Both favour remote operation and lengthy planning, but reward their users' patience with incredible scope and damage potential. You find your routines for missions parallel heavily, and Melone has a lot to teach you about staying safe during the long period of preparation for using your stands. Often you will find yourselves sitting together, Melone educating a young junior as you prepare an illustration of the tools it will use to aid it against the target. Your bond is strong, and you develop a lot of affection together through your joint work.
Ghiaccio- White Album is a stand at its strongest when it's user is capable of quick thinking, immediate response and personal, direct forms of battle. It is hence the antithesis of your own stand, which stresses planned creativity in a calm setting. There isn't much you could do to help Ghiaccio during his missions, since his fights tend to move too quickly for you to possibly draw from scratch as they evolve, so in terms of work your bond with Ghiaccio will be slow. At home however, Ghiaccio is drawn to the peaceful nature of your ability, particularly as you calmly illustrate the patching of his wounds as he lies on the sofa after a difficult mission. Though he can't do it himself, he finds drawing satisfying, and has a lot of admiration for your power.
Risotto- Your creativity in the field is certainly something Risotto can relate to, due to both his own morbid creativity that allows him to fully utilise Metallica, and the fact he's still responsible for at least some of the planning in a majority of La Squadra's missions. He appreciates an ally that can understand the need for nuance and caution when pursuing a target, especially when some of the boys just go out into the field with nothing on their minds but sadism. The two of you have many pleasant nights together discussing the strategy of your upcoming missions in the privacy of his office. Though he has little in the way of art skills himself, Risotto is surprisingly cultured, and will often pick up on styleistic and symbolic references in your drawings you didn't expect anyone to notice.
Sorbet and Gelato- La Squadra's greatest sadists are no strangers to bringing creativity to the art of murder, so learning of your ability fills them with a wicked glee. They frequently give constructive criticism on your draft pieces for a target's elimination, offering improvements that are sometimes practical, and sometimes simply there to make the final product more entertaining for them. They love it when the ideas you built together come to fruition, and will often insist on being there for the show even if you would have otherwise not chosen to be present for when the targt kicks it. There is a high likelyhood that, particularly if you are a newcomer to the trade, you will end up the apprentice of the lethal couple. Their advice may be unconventional, but has you achieving your goals every time without fail.

We*bo Night Style Review
The following is my insight and perception as a professional stylist and is subjective to my position and role.
Long post is long.
Starting from the first I saw, I will address Yibo's blue Chanel number. This look pulls directly from Chanel's Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear line. It is paired with Jimmy Choo Mocca loafers and a beret which has a badge on it bearing "my own private planet" on it. This is a cute accessory for the The Little Prince homage alone. I won’t go into how fitting it is for Yibo to pull from this beloved book as it would make this post needlessly gushy and too long, just know that I have had loud feelings about it all day.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I was underwhelmed upon first impression when I saw this fit. Setting aside my own personal dislike of Chanel, the overall feel of this look didn't catch nor meet what I would have expected to see. It held a cute air of youth to it and played upon the boyish charm Yibo simply cannot be rid of thanks to his facial structure and features. It is jarring for me to write about Chanel in conjunction to "youthful, boyish charms" as Chanel caters near exclusively to women with deep pockets that enjoy looking as if they corner the ideal of being a Stepford Wife, no matter the age.
However, Yibo has always successfully turned Chanel's overt "Emily Gilmore" aesthetic on its head and has singlehandedly returned Chanel to being in the ranks of fashion which are aimed at younger to middle range adults. Tonight is no exception to this as he did look wonderful. The accessories and the shirt are all also Chanel and initially debuted in as an ensemble when this Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear line was trotted out at the end of last year. In my opinion as a professional and critical eye, Yibo wore this look better than the original model. The way his hair stylist did his hair with micro extensions and false locks to give him that additional length and furthering the ideal of youthful leisure really made this style snap off.
Some notes on the pieces in play:
This is not the first time Yibo has worn this specific collection of Chanel’s. His styles from Tencent Star Awards were also from this range.
This collection was inspired by actresses of the vintage screen. Virginie Viard has commented that she wanted to capture the duality of modern actress lifestyles - high production value and quality of the red carpet service styles, to the staged nuance of being off screen and therefore off duty while waiting in line for coffee - framed by classic lines of the bygone Hollywood era. Yibo specifically seems drawn to the separates-based mix of the set, which were all styled from the draw of the 1980s - hence the shoulder pads and candy colors of pink and now blue. I feel it is worth mentioning that when this line debuted the runway many comments flew about how the collection felt very reminiscent of looking at Regina George inspired couture. Mean Girls, but make it Wang Yibo.
The mini purse around his waist is actually a necklace, not a belt.
He is wearing the Coco Crush ring. This item is peak comfort item material as he seems incredibly keen on wearing it whenever possible and is unabashed to have it called to attention. There is a story behind this ring, of this my professional chimes are ringing loudly in certainty.
My impression of this style changed drastically the more I looked at it and marveled at the almost pale vulnerability the look managed to pluck upon. The color is flattering despite it being candy-bright and almost too pigmented to think of as a functional red carpet choice. Also, I strongly suspect the play here was to highlight the duality of Yibo himself since the style he served up immediately after this completely overwhelms the fawning spring of this style.
Wang Yibo 2.0
Tumblr media
This second look features Fendi, Patek Philippe, and Louboutin. The blazer is a Fendi black wool piece and the shirt, also Fendi, is from their lovely Spring/Summer 2021 collection. The watch is Patek Philippe and further showcases Yibo’s taste for expensive and bold watches and it’s actually incredibly admirable for him to use watches as an accessory which seals the deal on an ensemble. There aren’t many that can pull this off due to how often watches remain hidden by the cuffs and sleeves of jackets and shirts and therefore go unnoticed or are seen as bulky obstructions and are being slowly and steadily phased out from being considered staples of style. Of course the shoes are Louboutin, which is just a nice choice no matter what. Solid footwear; sleek and stylish no matter what.
If I was initially underwhelmed by the previous fashion choice then this look did more than simply overwhelm me; it devastated me and left me gaping. The! Hair! The black on black silhouette! The way he flawlessly transitioned from being youthfully boyish and bursting with charm to a domineering presence of matured angles and sharp zeal!! Wang Yibo with an undercut and draped in matte black Fendi is enough to score through my bingo card of styles I was unprepared for and yet thankfully blessed by.
Some notes on the pieces in play:
While the Fendi blazer isn’t altogether spectacular and one of their more run of the mill items, the shirt beneath and the collection it was pulled from are interesting. The Spring/Summer 2021 Fendi line caters to the celebration of love and the surreal intensity of what a domestic experience quarantine and lockdown was like. The menswear was notably designed as “boardroom to boudoir” meaning that the concept was embellished loose linens which could be tucked into a business or formal setting only to later be tugged free and worn sweetly casual, bordering intimate.
This is the shirt in it’s full glory. It isn’t something you would expect to be expertly tucked into the slim lines of Yibo’s stature and one can imagine how it must appear when it left to fall loose around his lean frame. It is a bed shirt in essence and was utilized in such a way that it looks like an entirely new garment on him.
Tumblr media
And now we move along to Xiao Zhan and his timeless and classic style.
Tumblr media
A man of brand/designer solidarity, he is decked from head to toe in Gucci. I won a bet on this as I wagered he would absolutely be in his chosen favorite. The brooch is another staple in his fashion repertoire and is a Tiffany & Co. item.
He appears very timeless in these classic and clean lines. This is a straight fit wool suit which Gucci favors in tailoring to accentuate slim and tall builds and as such drapes over Zhan’s body as if it were an extension of his body itself. The fit is that perfect. He strikes me as looking very refined and noble in this suit; mature and aloof.
Some notes on the pieces in play:
Gucci has a reputation for constantly improving the way they tailor suits and as such this “relaxed straight fit” is exclusive to their label. Any other fashion house has slim fits, which are the original frame for this style, but entirely different in how Gucci has renovated the way it all fits and hangs. They alter jackets to be comfortably loose along the back of the neck while remaining pleasantly tucked to accentuate the lines of the shoulders, arms, and chest. The pants are brought in at the waist to make slim appear sleek, and the fall straight through the legs to provide the air of being relaxed.
The brooch he is wearing, “Four Leaves” by Jean Schlumberger via Tiffany & Co, is an antique item as Schlumberger was alive from 1907 to 1987. Schlumberger is only one of four designers ever given allowance to sign their work to Tiffany & Co. He created the collection the “Four Leaves” brooch hails from at behest of a friend and fellow admirer of nature’s glory, Rachel “Bunny” Mellon. The irony of Xiao Zhan, resident rabbit,  wearing a piece created on the request of someone called Bunny is not lost to me and hopefully not any of you now that I’ve made mention of it.
The gemstone in the brooch is blue-green tourmaline. Tourmaline has many different correspondences depending on the color at hand. Blue-green rouses luck and success and is often used to manifest goals, notably of a creative nature. It is also a crystal of peace and encourages the release of past hurts by bringing them to the surface to be healed via honest and heartfelt communication. Tourmaline can evolve as it is worn and will adhere to the wearer’s conviction, rousing the idea of living a life of integrity and accountability; inviting the wearer to accept any perceived flaws and weaknesses with easy tolerance. I am making this mention because every bit of this seems so incredibly in line with where Xiao Zhan is in life and in his career, especially in light of what he so graciously said on we*bo yesterday as we made it to a year since hell came for him. I am always very moved by this man.
Here is the brooch just so you can have a proper look:
Tumblr media
And that’s a wrap on We*bo Night’s lookbook!
This is a bit of a messy post and I do apologize for that, but nevertheless I hope it was enjoyable and gave you some new insights on the way fashion fits together at every turn.

Road to RPsy: A master's student's guide for Filipino psychology graduates in making a career headway in the Philippines - Part 1
Let's paint this picture for a moment...
You get into your psychology program (or any other program) in a Filipino college or university. You study hard. And then, you achieve your well-deserved bachelor's degree. While you shake hands and celebrate for about a month (just as you should), you sooner realize and ask, "Now what?" Then, you ponder on how to get your career in clinical psychology started. Possibly, you got anxious, confused, or maybe even determined.
If this is (or was) you, don't worry! You're perfectly okay. Trust me, I've been there before... and we shouldn't feel ashamed for this.
Which is why I'd like to take this time to write about my personal and professional experiences as a college graduate of psychology in the Philippines, and how I managed to craft my own headway into getting clinical training and graduate studies for clinical psychology. I sincerely hope that this little article would help a fellow psychology graduate craft their own headway into clinical psychology (or any other field of the sort). I'd also like to share some tips from my past and present mentors, colleagues, coworkers, and professors that I find useful to take note of.
I separated this into a series of articles to keep reading concise and organized. For this part, I start off with discussing...
What psychology careers in the Philippines looks like
How goals can be set in order to get an RPsy; and
Selecting the postgraduate school or program for you
Keep reading to find out more!
Key Points (TL;DR)
There are many myths and misconceptions that narrow one's view about psychology and its careers; but there are actually a lot of opportunities.
Keep yourself open to opportunities, be it for training or career, that will help propel you to snatching an RPsy license.
Clinical experience is key. But, do not discount non-clinical experiences as well.
Practice 'SMART' (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound) goal setting for your career.
Choosing a school is dependent on your preferred training, scholastic interests, career goals, personal motivations, and (financial) resources.
Before I begin...
I'd like to first disclose what my biases and limits are, and what potentially could be a matter that you, dear reader, should consider before taking any advice from me. So, here's a little bit about myself...
Firstly, I am a young adult and pretty much novice to the field of psychology. I have gone through two years (and counting) of clinical experience as a licensed psychometrician. I do not declare myself an expert yet, nor do I pride myself as the most reliable person in the field of psychology. This article is written purely in my personal perspective and experiences. That said, I will do my best to offer you up-to-date information and objectivity that may support or criticize my views.
Secondly, I come from a very middle-class family. My parents made just about enough for us to pay the bills, to feed, clothe, and shelter us, and to give us a decent education. I firmly think this disclosure is very important since not everyone has the same privileges in terms of education, opportunity, and resources. There are some career decisions that I have made or experienced because I had the capacity to make them so despite certain critical tradeoffs (like, getting less pay). As of writing, I would say that our status is still the same, even if I make my own profit with my college degree. I will do my best to be considerate about the differing backgrounds among people, especially when it comes to privilege offered by social class.
Lastly, I'd like to emphasize that my word is not gospel and should not be taken easily by those who seek importance or utility to what I will share. The tone I will use will be very personal - as this is my personal blog. Plus, I will be largely biased towards clinical psychology, as it is the field I am in. You may find that some pieces of advice will resonate more with you than others. Conversely, you might find that some pieces of advice may be unhelpful for you. Hence, I welcome any criticism to my personal views and open myself to a healthy discussion. (Feel free to reach me through my Ask page here on my blog.) I highly encourage you, dear reader, to look for more opinions from more seasoned professionals in the field.
Now, on to the article...
The current scene of psychology careers in the Philippines
As I was graduating, it was important for me to look for information about careers in psychology in the country. After all, as you will see later, getting an idea of psychology's zeitgiest (a term used by historians to refer to the salient "mood" or "spirit" of ideas or beliefs of, say, an academic field) this country will inform you in your career goal setting and considering options that will lead you to where you want to be.
Psychology in the Philippines has a lot of stereotypes, myths, and misconceptions brought about by pop psychology spread across the masses. Here are some of the popular ones (and my personal favorites) which you may have already heard from people around you:
"Sa HR mapupunta ang isang Psych grad." ("Psych grads end up in HR [work].")
"Psych ka? Magme-med/Maglo-law ka ba?" ("You study Psych? Are you pursuing med/law?")
"Wala naman masyadong pera/future sa Psych." ("There's no money/future in Psych.")
"Psych? So yung mga baliw yung trabaho mo?" ("Psych? So you work on crazy people?")
And there's plenty more where that came from. Funnily enough, my college friends and I used to do a game where we take a shot of liquor for each myth said to us. (Drink responsibly, kids!) But, as psychology graduates, we know that these aren't completely true.
Now, let's take a look at how we can argue in psychology's defense and dignity and accept what the common person has gotten correctly.
Psychology practice in the Philippines
It's important to note that the term 'psychologist' or 'psychology practitioner' has different meanings in various contexts. Often, we think about psychologists as those who does therapy and plays around with psychological instruments. While this is somewhat true, a more academic language would refer to a 'psychologist' or 'practitioner' as someone who earned their degree in psychology - regardless of specialty - and has built their career in praxis of psychology. As I go along in this section, I'll refer to the 'psychologist' as the latter definition.
Clinical and counselling. In a 2004 article by Cristina Montiel and Lota Teh published in the International Handbook of Psychology, the authors enumerated on and expounded the most popular fields and specializations that psychology practitioners work in. Clinical or counselling practitioners lead in this list, often delving into psychotherapy, interventions, and assessment in various settings -- of which I have had experience on. I think this appears to be only partially true today, which I'll explain in a bit. You would find most practitioners doing their clinical practice in private clinics, hospitals, and schools. It's important to note, however, that most practitioners of this subfield have postgraduate degrees, and - since the year 2014, when Republic Act No. 10029 was enacted - a board license from Philippine Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). These licensed professionals have the names: 'RPsy' for psychologists.
However, bachelor's degree holders were also permitted to practice with their own little license: an 'RPm' or 'registered psychometrician' - which I have. These licensed professionals, get to practice assessment and several other supportive clinical functions - but not psychotherapy. The catch? You legally and ethically need to be supervised by a licensed psychologist. I'd like to get into the nitty-gritty differences and nuances of these two licenses, but I'll save that for another article. In the meantime, you must understand that these two have disparities in terms of their education attainment, clinical skills, and professional autonomy.
During my oath-taking ceremony as a psychometrician in 2018, Dr. Regina Hechanova-Alampay, a known Filipina in the fields of industrial-organizational and community psychology (and the mom of one of my dear friends), stated in her keynote address that the approximate ratio of each RPsy to each Filipino citizen is 1 to 100,000. A 2018 study has pointed this approximation to be accurate. Similarly, my former clinical supervisor approximated that the ratio of RPsy supervisors to RPm supervisees is 1 to 2,000. These numbers are quite a lot! Needless to say, there is a shortage of supply of clinical practitioners for the demand and a large influx of RPm's that have less clinical autonomy. And with an ever-growing relevance and awareness to the field of mental health in the country, these numbers are concerning. But -- hold on. If there are a lot of RPm's being produced yearly, where do they go?
Industrial-organizational and human resources. Montiel and Teh accounted that the second most abundant field in the country is in industrial-organizational (I/O) psychology or human resources (HR). This is where I think most psychology graduates usually end up in after college these days. Daresay, this is the fastest way to earn money as a fresh college graduate. But does that mean that the stereotype is necessarily true? It really depends on the way an employer values the employee and how much one is capable of doing a job. Sometimes, you get paid more, just right, or less.
I/O psychologists or HR practitioners often deal in corporate or organizational settings, often concerned with their person-related matters. They have skills like recruiting talent or labor, assessing worker needs, evaluating individual performances, or developing workers of a company - just to name a few. Do they need a license like an RPsy or RPm? Not necessarily.
You would often find job postings for HR positions that would often "prefer" a psychology graduate with a license, but sometimes "require" it. Therein lies some grey areas about how the professional licenses' stipulations are interpreted. But, let's not get into that just yet. But in my opinion, if people saw the utility of getting a license (which has its own financial costs of acquiring) as a way to improve compensation or marketability in the workforce, then they should get it.
Not all industrial-organizational psychologists, however, delve into the office hours and paper works. Some others go into research - particularly on topics like employee behaviors, group dynamics, and so on. It's important to think that these types of practitioners are just as versatile as other subfields in psychology.
Academia and other niches of psychology. As per Montiel and Teh, another large chunk of practitioners often end up in the academe. They become educators in various levels, researchers, or expert consultants depending on their interest, skill, and reputation. For example, developmental psychologists (or those who specialize in child psychology) get hired in preschools or alternative modes of learning. It was also mentioned briefly that social psychologists often find themselves in the social development sector, like the National Economic Development Agency (NEDA) or the Department for Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Other common settings for psychology graduates to work in includes government facilities and the military, where their knowledge about human behavior are often found useful.
Research skills are also found useful in areas like market research and analytics. Because psychology graduates have knowledge about fundamentals of statistics and psychological measurement, a lot of these businesses employ their help in order to understand their target market's consumer behaviors and make informed decisions to increase profit. Other information about making a career in business can come be read in a lot of psychoeducational websites, like in Verywell Mind.
Overall, there is a plethora of careers a psychology graduate can delve into, especially for a fresh graduate like yourself. Over time, you would find that certain subfields would resonate more with you than others. You may often wonder which one - or a combination of more - would lead you to your career or personal ambitions. Now that you know how vast a career in psychology can be, it's a matter of choice and planning ahead, which leads me to the next section.
Goal-setting: Which road to take and what to expect
Eyeing the precious RPsy license won't be an easy task. Then again, would the hardships matter if it's worth it anyway? It's important for you, dear reader, to think about how you want to get to that goal.
Should one want to take a straightforward path, she or he would have taken their master's or doctorate studies in clinical or counselling psychology for the following three to five years (with coursework, practicum, and perhaps thesis or dissertation), then take the board exam from the PRC. I have a couple of friends who have done so, and it works for them.
However, for the likes of many of us - myself included - we may not have the same luxury of time or resources to afford us this direct route. Because of many personal needs (ahem-- financial), we may need to find a way to secure these as we go along our road to the RPsy. And how could I forget the costs of postgraduate studies alone? Which is why we'll need to earn or find income.
The best job or experience that can afford you a good head start in clinical psychology is the one closest to it. As my former supervisor, Paula, once said, "Clinical experience is key." For example, you can find psychometricians assisting with psychological assessments in various settings. Others delved into social or community work -- sometimes as a volunteer. The likelihood for one to get accepted in clinical or counselling training programs, like a postgraduate degree or certification training, is increased when one has had a hand on a similar line of work. But this is not to say that any other job is unimportant -- no. There's growing research on the various applications of mental health practice on non-clinical settings, like schools, offices, and even micro-communities. The possibilities are actually numerous. That said, I cannot guarantee how abundant these opportunities are.
There are a few things to consider when looking for a job or a source of income:
In terms of career, what are your yes's, maybe's, and no's? Make individual lists of the occupations you can say these three answers to.
How soon are you planning to achieve an RPsy license? As soon as the next four years? Or, maybe you want to take it slow and say ten?
What job and/or study opportunities are available to you at the moment? How comfortable will the setup be for you?
How much resources and time are available to you for work, study, and personal matters? Which of these do you prioritize more?
How much are you willing or do you need to be compensated to afford such a lifestyle?
As you formulate answers to these questions (especially, the last two), keep in mind that a more effective goal setting follows a 'SMART' process. That is: it is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound. (More info about this process right here.) Patterning our goals to these dimensions helps us look at ourselves objectively and find an integrated way to live our lives productively.
In my personal experience, after graduating college, I took a two month break to enjoy the fruits of my hard-earned college degree with a "vacation" (which mostly staying home, if I'm being honest). In my mind, I knew that getting a master's degree is a must for me; a ladderized doctorate program was also amenable but I wanted to get that training abroad. But, I wanted to make myself more immersed in the field before I can enter a graduate program. I applied to different jobs - a psychological services consultant (which I primarily wanted), a personal development teacher in senior high, and a research analyst. Luckily, I got the job that I wanted and reaped clinical experience. (I'll write more about my first experiences in the clinic in another post.) A year later, I applied and got into the clinical program of the University of the Philippines. And now, I've been taking coursework on clinical psychology while working as a research associate of a particular office in the same university.
I understand, however, that not everybody could find the "perfect" balance or ideal solution to all of these concerns. In fact, I don't think anyone can -- unless you were blessed with such a life. Why? This is where I reflectively talk about my privilege (as I did at the beginning). Awareness of your own opportunities makes us think fully or subconsciously about our own status in the social system. Whether we like it or not, it affects many of the career - and more broadly, life - decisions depending on where we stand in our lives. Which is why I advocate for practicality. We may not always select the ideal -- but the principle of survival is important, especially in an underdeveloped country like the Philippines. As Montiel and Teh pointed out, poverty and economics have affected psychology practice and it opportunities in the country.
Can goals or plans change? Short answer is 'yes'. There are many reasons why our plans change. It may be because we find ourselves being presented by new or better opportunities. Or perhaps, we discover more personal insights and realizations about the career we want and how to get it. Life can be complex to influence our decisions within or without our control. Whatever the reason is, it is important for one to be able to evaluate one's strengths and weaknesses, limits and boundaries, and our emotions and motivation to keep us going.
Choosing your school: Which one should I go to?
It's very common for a psychology graduate to ask: Where should I get my clinical training? Again, this is dependent on your resources, time, and preferences. Coupled with these is the opportunities (or as Bandura would put it - chance encounters and fortuitous events).
Locally, there are about 60% of schools that offer master's degrees in clinical or counselling psychology as per Commission of Higher Education (CHED). A fewer percentage offers Ph.D. or doctorate equivalent degrees in clinical or counselling psychology, the three most famous being (as per Montiel and Teh): the Ateneo de Manila University, the University of the Philippines, and University of Santo Tomas. However, there is a growing number of urban and rural schools that offer postgraduate studies and attract local aspirants to enroll in their programs. At the top of my mind, St. Louis' University in Baguio City has been regarded as one of the best in developmental psychology (currently considered as a viable alternative to clinical psychology). Likewise, the De La Salle University in Manila, a member of the colloquially regarded "Big Four Universities," is gaining traction for their clinical program very recently.
Focusing on a school's reputation is not enough, however. What, us, clinical psychology hopefuls often look over is the training itself. Circling back to my guide questions on goal setting, preferences often come into play when deciding your training. For most, who prefer a general track in clinical psychology, many schools offer a flexible education to ensure you get the wide knowledge of the field, without undermining the core or essentials. Others may teach clinical psychology in a more specific way, favoring practical experiences like internships over theorizing in the classroom. Factors like faculty composition and expertise, paradigm, and school culture often influence how these training programs are developed. What I find helpful to attain this information is to ask these departments and institutions directly. Another approach is asking a friend taking up a program in that school. No harm in inquiry! Ask away.
Of course, like what I have also emphasized in this article, is the sensitive yet important issue of money. To be specific, your tuition. Clinical training in the Philippines ranges from ₱10,000 to ₱50,000.00 a year. The trend (as I've observed from applying in different schools) is that the more privatized and more "complex" the education, the higher the cost. Public schools often come cheaper than private schools. Consider your capacities for funding your education (including where it comes from) and weigh it with your preferences to make an optimal choice of school or program.
A popular notion among graduate students, or those heading into graduate school, is that public schools, like where I study, often take longer to finish a master's degree than others. Well, there are many factors to this. One is faculty size, for example. How many qualified teachers does the school have that supplies a smooth progression for a graduate student to complete their degrees? Another factor - which many often forget to attribute as well - is the student's motivation. It is not uncommon for a graduate student to fluctuate in wanting to accomplish their degrees. It really depends on how determined one is to see things through (which takes a lot of doing, if I do say so myself).
Overall, choosing a school is much less of an issue when it comes to time, but more so when it comes to practicality. In my opinion, any school that gives you basic competencies, regardless of reputation, is enough. In fact, most of my supervisors did not even settle for their graduate training alone. The field of clinical psychology (much like the other fields) is ever changing and adapting to the times. You often find a lot of trainings, seminars, and specialization programs that practitioners study or enroll in order to keep their practice up to date and ethical. Learning and personal growth, especially as clinicians, should not stop after we receive our degrees and licenses. Again, this calls back to the point of keeping an open eye and open mind on the opportunities that come our way.
--
Now that we discussed the first three tips, I plan to take a break here and let you, dear reader, reflect on things that will help you make your headway to that RPsy license. Do more reading. Ask questions. Seek answers. And explore yourself and the world to get a better sense of the pathway ahead.
I do hope that this discussion helps! See you on the next one.

🎤fave line in a fic you wrote, 💎 fave trope to write, and 🌍fave type of au to write? :D
🎤fave line in a fic you wrote
Man, that's a hard one. A lot of my favourite lines are ones that hit the best in context, due to repetition or how they’re used in that story.
But all in all, if it came down to it... probably not what anyone would expect. If it came down to it, my current absolute favourite line I’ve written across all of my fics would be from Another’s Hand:
The arm is this to Bucky: A tool. A thing not his own. A thing given to him, yes, but it doesn't belong to him any more than he does.
Which ties and mirrors to a later line:
(It was never his, even as they bolted it into his bones. Another man's arm controlled by another man's will to serve another man's purpose.)
Another’s Hand is one of my three Bucky-centric short study fics, of me playing with the lines between Bucky and the Winter Soldier, the violation and trauma of it and the knockon effects. The fics are in specific: Another’s Hand, a patient etherized, and Puzzle Pieces and I am very proud of them. In this specific case, it’s Bucky’s questions about what the metal arm is, given it’s place in the trauma and violation visited on him. It is hugely representative of all that, but it’s also useful, and it has, over that time, become a part of him as well - it informs who he is in the present. It’s not unlike how our experiences, good and bad, become parts of us, and we have to find ways to reconcile ourselves to the the changes those experiences have wrought on us.
If you want a runner up favourite line, it’d be this, from one of my more recent Critical Role fics:
There’s a twinge in his back - he probably pulled something in his fitful sleep - but he stretches his arms out, feels everything click into place like the bolt and barrels of his guns.
This is from even his worst, which is a Percy character study set immediately after Crimson Diplomacy. My friend @chamerionwrites most accurately pinned why this is one of my favourite lines - I love analogies and like them, I especially like analogies that reveal something about the character. I use a lot of structural analogies in my Maximoff fics when talking about mindscapes, but Percy’s a much more mechanical individual - there’s a reason why that balance may return talks about carriage springs as a comparison for tension - but this allows you to infer much more about who Percy is and how he perceives himself and I’m very proud of it for that.
💎 fave trope to write
Oh well all know this. Pain! Of some kind. I like emotional hurt/comfort as a means of character study, or just character hurt as a means of character study. Geode method of writing - to see what a character is made of, first you must break them. Hence: angst.
Also I just... I really like seeing how people respond to pressure. We’re all very different people in the world and where pressure encourages some people to strive, in some cases it breaks people, or twists them into a terrible, painful shape. It creates something new out of them you wouldn’t find in other circumstances and I enjoy writing the struggle of that, as well as a final recovery and... coming to terms with the changes the world puts you through. I like doing it for characters I relate to and characters I don’t much relate to, characters I like and characters I dislike, and even sets of characters I like but which don’t much like each other in the source canon.
Mostly because I think it’s worth while to look at all of these different perspectives and different ways people respond and accept that they’re all allowed to have these complex and very different attitudes to things - that there’s no one perfect way to do things and that sometimes, through no fault of anyone, people may fall apart or come together. Sometimes someone clicks with someone in a way they didn’t before, and sometimes they become so different they no longer click as they once did. That doesn’t mean either person is terrible for it - just different. And that can be hard to accept with IRL people, but fiction is there as a trial run for reality, in a lot of ways. It’s a safer space for us to explore uncomfortable emotions, so I try to offer that opportunity in my fic - cases where no one is right but no one is wrong either.
Or... or sometimes, another favourite: where someone is wrong, terribly so, but you can understand why they’re doing and/or believe the terrible and objectively wrong things.
We’re all capable of terrible things. We’re all capable of justifying or excusing things. And I deeply like leading readers slowly towards something that horrifies them but that the story allows them to completely understand the motivations of. It’s a tricky path to tread but I firmly believe reading things like that, learning to see how people justify those things to themselves, allows you to better catch yourself in the act of those things and keep yourself and your actions in line with your morals.
🌍fave type of au to write? :D
Okay, this is going to be terribly specific but: I like AUs where I change a very small thing which doesn’t affect plot or overarching, externally-caused events so much, but still allows me to really dig into the meat of a character’s personality, nature and problems, as well as the themes they pull at both in canon and in the context of the fic.
This is what I mean when I talk about using meta in fic - I’m not talking about writing meta and posting it as fic (that’d be mistagging, bitches), I’m talking about using what you read in what you write. Using what you learn to make your creations better. There’s a lot of observations you can find in meta that it’s worth trying to incorporate into your fic to give the characters and the story a greater degree of nuance and depth - to make the story overall more interesting and engaging.
Send an emoji from Here to have me answer questions about fic!

What do you think about fan fiction? As an English lit student, I find the reaction towards fan fiction a bit hilarious sometimes because so much literature is ‘fan fiction’ of other pieces of literature, eg paradise lost is a fan fiction of the bible. I guess because a lot of ‘women’ and/or members of the lgbtqia+ community (not to be confused with iffany trump’s lgbqia+ community) write fan fiction so people don’t view it as legitimate and view it as something stupid and retarded. (1)
Anonymous said: Yes, a lot of fan fiction is bad and a lot of it has a lot of smut but 1) a lot of fiction that’s published now is bad and you have to distil it since people can self-publish anything, including bullshit 2) sex is a big part of life and while I’m not a fan of no plot smut, when it’s integrated realistically and in a nuanced way it becomes just a reflection of reality. When Orwell writes sex scenes in 1984 no one says anything, but when ‘others’ do it it becomes a problem (2)
Tumblr media
omfgggg when did this blog become a critical commentary on social issues and perspectives ahhahaha. What do you think I think of fanfiction? I’ve been writing it for over four years, if I wasn’t on board then I’d be the one with issues LOL
okay on a more real note, I agree. It’s actually pretty fucking sad that fanfiction gets such a bad rep in main media. I get it though. There’s a LOT of shitty fanfiction out there, gross ones, badly written ones, literal incoherent ones. and they often get the limelight because it’s ALWAYYYS more fun to shit on something than to praise it. that’s why when youtubers ever read fanfiction, it’s the poorly written ones because that’s what’s gonna get the views. It’s actually also the reason I NEVER tell anyone irl I write fanfic because to me, I take it pretty seriously and I love it. But I know the general consensus out there is to be weirded out and to think it’s bad. Writing is personal to me so I don’t want to be insulted or have to spend time to justify it, hence I don’t ever talk about it.
Fanfic doesn’t even always have to include smut, taking me for example and so many other sfw writers I know and support.
Anyway, everyone’s gotta start somewhere. It’s not like first time writers are gonna start off writing their own book and freaking publish it. And sometimes, people don’t want to start writing original characters of their own. Fanfics are AMAZING. it’s a great way to start. it’s a great way to combine writing with whatever you like most. In my case, I love BTS and I love writing - so to be able to combine those two, for me, it has always been a privilege.

Was sacred prostitution for Aphrodite really a thing?
I wanted to touch on this because I’ve seen it coming up as of late and this topic is much debated amongst scholars.
Before I get into it, I want to make it clear that my personal stance on the matter is “we don’t really know”. So this post aims more at making a summary of the existing arguments on the topic rather than giving a defined answer.
What are we talking about exactly?
The discussion stems from several ancient sources, which are more or less explicit. The eldest is from Pindar (5th century BC), but we can also cite Herodotus (5th century BC), book 1,99 about Babylone:
“There is one custom amongst these people which is wholly shameful: every woman who is a native of the country must once in her life go and sit in the temple of Aphrodite and there give herself to a strange man.[...]The woman has no privilege of choice – she must go with the first man who throws her the money. When she has lain with him, her duty to the goddess is discharged and she may go home, after which it will be impossible to seduce her by any offer, however large.[...] There is a custom similar to this in parts of Cyprus.”
We can also cite an extract of Strabo (63BC-24AD) taken from book VIII, 6, 20 of Geographica, in which he describes the polis of Corinth and the temple of Aphrodite (between 700 and 400 BC):
And the temple of Aphrodite was so rich that it owned more than a thousand temple slaves, courtesans, whom both men and women had dedicated to the goddess. And therefore it was also on account of these women that the city was crowded with people and grew rich; for instance, the ship captains freely squandered their money, and hence the proverb, “"Not for every man is the voyage to Corinth."
The word in bold, “hetaira” literally means “companion” but does refer to a type of prostitute in the Ancient Greek world. The extracts I give here are not the only ones but the on-going debate amongst scholar is a bit tenous to explain because it compares practices through the Ancient World as a whole, so for clarity’s sake I will focus on Aphrodite and the Greek world*.
Either way, it is hard to judge 1) whether or not those sources repeat eachother blindly 2) the time frame during which those customs existed, if they existed at all.
Who thinks what?
I’m going to break it down into those 3 categories:
“It definitely was a thing”
Not many historians fall under that category anymore. The idea was more common amongst 19th century scholars. However, Morris Silver has written about his position in regard to temple prostitution in the Mesopatamian context in “Temple/Sacred Prostitution in Ancient Mesopotamia Revisited”, less so in a Greek one. However, this position leans itself on the fact that Aphrodite is at least to some extent an Near-Eastern goddess (Ishtar-Astarte) whom the Greeks have adopted. In that logic, if temple prostitution was present in the Near-East, it would not be a stretch to imagine the Greeks could have adopted the custom, even locally (eg. Cyprus and Corinth).
“Sacred prostitution never existed, it’s a myth”
This is a rather new position and mostly held by historian Stephanie L. Budin. What differs her position from more nuanced ones (which I go through next) is that she claims sacred prositution just did not exist at all in all the Ancient World. She exposes her arguments in “The Myth of Sacred Prostitution in Antiquity” (2008). Her idea is that the sources previous historians have used as evidence are misunderstood and/or mistranslated. Most of her book consists of taking each piece of evidence and counter analyse it. In her contribution in “Prostitutes and Courtesans in the Ancient World” ed. by Christopher Faraone and Laura McClure, she cites Robert Oden, who has touched upon the idea that “sacred prostitution was not an historical reality, but an accusation, the sort that one society makes against another so as to show off the “barbarity” and inferiority of that other group” his book The Bible without Theology (1984).
“The sources are there, but caution is needed” + critiques of the positions above
The two positions above are seen by many as extreme. The big majority of historians are rather cautious about the topic. Perhaps the most known criticism aimed at Budin is from Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge, who has written a direct review. As she herself states, while she agrees to some extent with the idea of “a historiographical myth of sacred prostitution”, both sources and reinterpretations need to be handled with caution. That is because the terminology is cryptic and confusing and asks for extra analysis, especially when it comes to making a distinction between temple prostitution and usual prostitution, as Allison Glazebrook puts it “While there are only two contemporary references to what might be interpreted as sacred prostitution at Corinth, the focus of prostitution in this ancient city has remained temple prostitution [...], neglecting the many references to prostitution at Corinth in general.”
Final words
I will reiterate my disclaimer: in no way am I claiming to bring an answer to such a complex question. My aim was merely this, making my readers realize the complexity behind some claims I have seen before on this website. And while there is no doubt on the fact that Aphrodite is a patron to sex workers and was considered as such, there is doubt and uncertainty on the very specific matter of temple prostitution.
Bibliography under the cut.
Note: this bibliography is absolutely not extensive. So much as been written and theorized on the topic that it would be hard for me to make a truly complete assessment of the subject without making this post way too long.

Todoroki’s Relationships Analysis Part 6: Chapter 98-166 (License, Internship & Retake arcs)
mysterylover123
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though he stired, Shoto still participates in the dorm contest. He’s grown a little more sociable.
Tumblr media
His classmates are mostly shocked by his rearranged room and can’t seem to comprehend his decorating tastes.
Tumblr media
Shoto is not particularly invested in the contest, though, as shown by his quickly wanting to go to sleep.
Tumblr media
He does seem to be contrite for causing trouble for the class - remember, Shoto was the one of the team who knew what he was doing was selfish, essentially.
Tumblr media
Todoroki ends up failing the PLE arc, and he immediately shows what his failings still are: despite having worked together successfully with his classmates in the past, and despite Midoriya reasonably explaining why they need to stick together, he still immediately blows them all off to try and do it all on his own.
Tumblr media
He does pass the first round this way, but it’s still an impulse of his that he has yet to curb.
Tumblr media
When Todoroki notices Inasa’s bad attitude towards him, he assumes he must have done something (and he did, but nothing he should really blame himself for). Shoto is simultaneously the kindest, most self-abasing kid around, and yet also arrogant in that he feels he is the one who controls and causes everything.
Tumblr media
Not that I’m really critiquing him much, here. Inasa’s the one who held the grudge. But this is about analyzing Shoto’s dynamics, not talking about how great he truly is.
Tumblr media
We see how Shoto deals with conflict in this arc. We’re used to seeing him calmly blow off Bakugou’s temper tantrums, but Inasa’s comments seem to hit him more personally, of course, because he compared him to his dad.
Tumblr media
An angry and petty Shoto accuses the other person of hassling him on purpose and becomes fixated on his anger and rage rather than anything else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pre-UA Shoto is almost Bakugou-esuqe. Angry, sullen, withdrawn, and telling other people to shut up, go away, that they’re not worth his time.
Tumblr media
A sweet moment in the midst of the angry chaos is Shoto acknowledge that Midoriya is always there, perhaps “for me” or just perhaps what was said. That Deku is always around, like Shoto pointed out in the previous arc. Always meddling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Always watching him to see if he’s ok.
Tumblr media
Yaoyorozu joins in as well here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Deku and Iida come to congratulate him when he learns he can retake the test. He looks to them and tells them he’ll catch up soon. Interestingly, Shoto is not the only rival of Midoriya’s who Deku surpasses in this arc by winning the provisional Licesne, but his reaction is obviously a little more...subdued.
Tumblr media
He makes some amends with Inasa, as well.
Tumblr media
And finally, to Bakugou. We don’t get much of Shoto’s thoughts about DVK2, since nobody but the 3 were privy to it.  (BTW flipping through it again, even in passing, made me feel things.) What we do get, interestingly enough, is some concern for Bakugou missing their classes, not for Midoriya’s punishment, despite him arguably being closer to Izuku. It’s Kacchan who Shoto shows concern for here. (was someone looking forward to those private lessons, Shoto?)
Tumblr media
He’s apologetic for failing, and adopts a somewhat “noninvolvement” policy towards the work studies, since he can’t participate.
Tumblr media
Though he says “our” rights, he’s probably referring to Bakugou’s alone, after DVK2. Hence why Bakugou immediately snaps at him.
Tumblr media
Again, a criticism from Todoroki provokes the anger from Bakugou. Shoto, for his part, is as usual pretty indifferent to Bakugou’s anger and just kinda takes it in stride, while worrying about him as much as ever. Shoto, indeed, allowed to properly look after his friends, is very much a Mom Friend type, worrying about them and nagging them to do better.
Tumblr media
This scene in 137 with Izuku is a great example of that (and one of the finest TDDK moments, in my opinion). Shoto starts by inquiring into Izuku’s wellbeing, noticing he isn’t eating.
Tumblr media
He’s been paying attention to Deku’s behavior and emotions, even when Deku wasn’t aware of it.
Tumblr media
When Deku tries to say that “heroes don’t cry”, Shoto gives him this wonderful piece of supportive advice. This is so interesting, because as we know, crying is such an essential feature of Deku’s character. Here, he’s try to subscribe to the ‘tough guy’ ‘real men don’t cry’ mentality, but Shoto, one of the strongest and coolest kids in Class A, doesn’t subscribe to that. After all, Shoto’s own dad is just the type of person to give that unhealthy “don’t show feelings” mentality an endorsement. Therefore, it makes sense that Shoto would believe it’s important to express your feelings, even if he’s usually a bit stoic himself.
Tumblr media
This, plus giving Deku some comfort food, is such a sweet moment of supportive understanding from Shoto. He lets Deku be himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also stays up late the night before the PLE retake courses to make sure Deku is doing ok, and apologizes for having to leave early to go to bed.
Tumblr media
With Bakugou, Shoto remains as impenetrable as ever. A question that comes up is, since Bakugou is constantly telling Shoto to “walk behind him”, why does Shoto never listen to him? It’s probably because they’re both so assertive. Shoto doesn’t take orders from him, and he doesn’t take orders from Shoto.
Tumblr media
He gives Bakugou a subtly impressed look when he takes on a Cheerleader role to the team, though.
Tumblr media
Just like Izuku, the other person privy to the backstory with Endeavor, Bakugou watches Shoto to see how he’s doing.
Tumblr media
In interacting with the kids, Shoto is stilted, awkward, and a king of exposition.
Tumblr media
Once again, Shoto critiques Bakugou, who explodes angrily at him, though he still provides an explanation.
Tumblr media
Oof. This interaction. Once again, Shoto corrects Kacchan, though this is a more emotional, nuanced correction than simple nagging to do things better.
Tumblr media
Kacchan is proposing that they use a show of forced to teach the kids a lesson. Shoto tells him that there are better ways.
Tumblr media
What this says about Bakugou’s upbringing is a subject for a Bakugou meta and this is a Shoto meta. However, it’s worth noting that both of the two most socially inept, cold and ‘lacking heart’ members of Class A come from households with parents who we know have physically struck them, insulted them and tried to control their lives. Whether you consider Mitsuki abusive or not (she’s certainly not as bad as Endeavor, obviously), Katsuki and Shoto’s similarly dominant, forceful, independent personalities may come from their similar upbringings. However, that difference - Endeavor’s cruelty and Shoto’s acknowledgement of it - does change how they approach this. Shoto remains stoic and avoids anger when he can, because he associates losing his temper with Endeavor. Bakugou doesn’t see anything wrong with it, because he sees his mom as loving and doing the right thing, so why would doing it her way be wrong?
Tumblr media
Of course, Shoto instantly screws up, and now it’s Kacchan’s turn to critique him.
Tumblr media
When Camie creates an illusion of Shoto, the Viz translation has Bakugou say something like “Suits you well, Dreamy boy!” Either way, Shoto’s reaction here is to question if it really is hilarious, because hell, if it can make Bakugou laugh, there must be something he’s missing. (I don’t think we’ve ever seen Shoto laugh, come to think of it).
Tumblr media
But we do get to see him smile. In the flashback showing how the Team came up with their plan, Shoto and the others, at Katsuki’s suggestion, figure out how to truly reach the kids. We once again see surprisingly good teamwork between Bakugou and Todoroki, along with Inasa and Camie here, despite their antagonism.
Tumblr media
Endeav tries to be a dad for a few minutes and Shoto pretty quickly blows him off, though he seems a little touched by the attempt. Bakugou once again watches him, like Izuku did before, to see how he’s doing.
This section of the story is mostly about Todoroki’s relationships with Inasa and his dad, which I haven’t touched on as much. But it also develops his relationships with Deku and Katsuki quite a bit, moving them closer together. He shows an awareness of Izuku’s role in his life as a friend who’s always there for him and reciprocates by taking care of Izuku. He spends a lot of time with Bakugou in remedial classes, and develops the ability to work with him, accept his noisy outbursts, and worry about his wellbeing. This section, despite having a few scenes of Momo watching him as well, doesn’t really develop his feelings for her at all, so I’ve left them out of the tags. Between the Wonder Duo, we see how Shoto can be a great Mom Friend to both of them, and how he’s coming to a pretty amicable accord with each.

Ni-Ti loop curse - Ugetsu’s arc and predictions
I noticed that most of fandom thinks that after chapters 27-28 Ugetsu’s story is finished. It surprised me a little since I have different opinion that in fact he will definitely play role in upcoming final arc and that him getting happy ending is still possible.
Tumblr media
Whole Given basically
Spoilers for manga below.
1. Ugetsu compared to rest of characters
Since Ugetsu was introduced I was clearly intrigued by him, but no means I expected him grow to be my favorite character. I was rather surprised that instead of presenting him in a bad-ex trope way he got full-fleshed and nuanced. I like how he is one of mysteries of the story – at first we know that he is responsible for Akihiko views of love as painful thing and we got tidbits of theirs domestic life where they seems to be intimate but we get vibe that there is something wrong. Then we got chapter 17 and we know what went wrong and it is heartbreaking. I think it interesting choice that we simultaneously got both Akihiko and Ugetsu perspective on it and we get why it went that way. Natsuki-sensei not only spent lot of time fleshing out story from his perspective to sympathize with him and clearly puts a lot of effort in showing all emotions on his face. Compared to other supporting characters he got the most of time in manga and we get him to know relatively very well – from little information about childhood, his motivation and so on. Besides, what also distinguish him from them the most is the way he impact main storyline – he is important both to Akihiko’s as well as Mafuyu’s story, while rest orbits primarily around one character.
But what I found truly fascinating is how he is foil and contrast with rest of characters, because he is such extremum when it comes to music and relationships.
Uenoyama – he is called prodigy too; before meeting Mafuyu his life was centered only on music but it didn’t go well for him
Haruki -  totally opposite in almost everything from acting towards others, living space, views on music to relationship with Akihiko
Mafuyu – another prodigy who express feelings via music, but who wants to cultivate bonds with others
Yuki – both are dedicated to music at cost of their wellbeing and relationship
Akihiko – since he and Ugetsu are paralleled a lot with Yuuki-Mafuyu I will use Hiiragi’s quote “together, they filled in each other’s missing pieces” – in terms of character qualities and simple things as providing home and support, whose they respectively needed.
By all this I wanted to show you how his story entwines with rest of characters, so cutting him from main plot would be for me at least weird.
2. Ni-Ti loop and CAC song
To be honest I was worried that we may get negative character arc to contrast him with Mafuyu. But after rereading whole story I have more hope about this. So let’s start what is core of positive/negative character arc
“The Central Problem: This is the damaging belief your character must face to complete their arc. They may believe they’re weak or inferior to others, or they may refuse to trust anyone but themselves. This inner struggle will be confronted at the Climax and their ability to overcome it will determine if they succeed or fail in the conflict of your story.”
https://thenovelsmithy.com/positive-negative-character-arcs/
Applying it to Ugetsu he believes that being isolated from others is only way to be dedicated to music, thus pushing away others and acting inconsiderate to them.
It reminds me also of Ni-Ti loop:
“Instead of a healthy balance of introverted and extroverted functions, the INFJ becomes stuck in their introverted processes, keeping them trapped within their own mind in a seemingly endless loop of thought.
As our introverted iNtuition (Ni) ponders theories, concepts and possibilities, it feeds these ideas to our Ti which seeks facts and logic to back up and solidify these thoughts.  As it obtains this information, it feeds it back to our Ni which creates even more theories and concepts.
Each time this loop goes full circle, the thoughts become more and more radical and outlandish, pushing us further from reality and deeper into our minds.”
http://www.jennifersoldner.com/2016/02/ni-ti-loop.html
So we get Ugetsu thinking about how they chasing each other and neglecting music, then instead of talking to Akihiko about his insecurities he decided to push him away since prior to their meeting he was alone and fine this way. When declaring breakup didn’t work, he fallen further in this way of thinking and tried to discourage Akihiko by sleeping with other men. However, logic doesn’t apply well to love, so he is conflicted about his feelings constantly. So there is cycle in their relationship of pulling and pushing away resulting only in more pain and violence.
But even after Akihiko leaves him after their argument, it got even worse – he got more isolated from rest of world and depressed. His solution didn’t work at all.
During CAC we can observe that he starts to understand this. He seems to be stunned that not only Mafuyu can perform music on his level and be connected to others and Akihiko’s skill in drums got so much better thanks to Haruki’s influence.
Theoretically this could be end with him failing to change but…
CAC song is about ending and begging. It conveys that positive change is possible. I like how Mafuyu is not only referencing his experience about trauma and healing, but want to help others persons in his life and reassure them that everything will be alright. And there is this frame:
Tumblr media
Of course it has double meaning – Mafuyu want to resonate feelings via music like Ugetsu as well as to resonate meaning of song to him.
So concluding – with the both facts that Ugetsu does no longer believe in his previous standpoint and we have positive message of the song, we can discard option that his story ends here. But what comes next?
3. 3-act structure and what it means for the story
Quoting Wikipedia:
“The three-act structure is a model used in narrative fiction that divides a story into three parts, often called the Setup, the Confrontation and the Resolution.”
For Given as whole it would look like that (image from wikipedia, little changed by me):
Tumblr media
3-act structure is one of most common used in stories. I think it can be applied to Given too, because of the way stakes are gradually rising and evolution of Mafuyu’s songs (first one about his trauma and past love, second about positive change and final will be most likely about his feelings for Uenoyama – well technically second one mentions it too, but I think it will be explored more). For now I rather want to use that structure as tool to predict what can happen. Let’s look again at what Wikipedia says about final act:
“The third act features the resolution of the story and its subplots. The climax is the scene or sequence in which the main tensions of the story are brought to their most intense point and the dramatic question answered, leaving the protagonist and other characters with a new sense of who they really are.”
How to grow more tension?
For me the most interesting it would be instead of *insert some cliché drama* getting all main four character confronted with someone who foils all of them on both music and personal level. It would cause to challenge their perspectives, disrupt the routine and reevaluate their standpoints. In the end it would be resulting in character grow for all of them.
In less vague terms my theory is that Ugetsu will perform together with Given on debut in festival. To break Ni-Ti loop the best is interacting with people and outside world. To step out of comfort zone and leave basement.
I envision this scenario roughly like that:
Since it is very likely that Mafuyu will write new song (probably together with Uenoyama)
Then he would consult it with Ugetsu
Mafuyu would be concerned about the other wellbeing hence trying to help him the same way it worked for him in begging of the story
Tensions during rehearsals – mainly due to Ugetsu being critical of their skills at music
After some time Ugetsu will start open towards rest of group and genuine wanting to help them performing at their the best – even if it would took some sacrifice from him (like resignation from violin competition or concert)
Thus resulting in final reconciliation with Akihiko (not necessary in romantic sense, more like healing each other wounds they caused before)
Climax at debut
Of course, maybe I went too far with this theory, but it would wrap up things nicely in my opinion. This was written emphasizing Ugetsu’s story, maybe I will expand it in relation to rest characters another time.
Finally I want to point out certain issues that would tie into this from recent chapter:
1.    Mafuyu’s hesitation about debut - his fear of taking music seriously is rooted in Yuuki’s death and Ugetsu’s story as well. As chapter 18 showed he want to learn from their mistakes and I think he is afraid of losing himself too much in music and breaking up with Uenoyama in result. In order to move forward he has to make peace with music in some sense like discussing his insecurities with certain some who embodies music basically XD
2.    Akihiko pursuing both violin and drums – these two instruments are so loaded with double meaning (drums – fun, escaping pain and violin – passion and lost dreams). But regardless if Akihiko has to choose one of them or not – pursing violin corresponds to confronting why he given up on violinist career earlier and by this confronting Ugetsu
Bonus:
Tumblr media
Doesn’t sound it like foreshadowing?
So this is all for today. I don’t remember writing this much since my thesis – I hope it is coherent and that there is not that many errors XD If there is something unclear – feel free to ask.

Advancing staff getting ready is a fundamental segment of fire expectation so staff understand what to do if there should arise an occurrence of an emergency and can do so calmly and quickly. All staff should think about the zone of fire exits, extinguishing fires gear, fire security equipment and fire acknowledgment workplaces. Planning should moreover incorporate the use of this equipment where fundamental and the strategy related with emergency methods and takeoff drills. This planning can be endeavored during staff selection in any case typical lifts should happen each year.
Normal fire drills ought to occur in your day care to ensure that staff are prepared for reacting should an emergency situation occur. Month to month emergency flights for instance fire drills should be masterminded and happen out of nowhere. All individuals should be purged to a pre-composed assembling point where appointed staff people should ensure everyone is accessible and spoken to. My Very Belated Take on the Amazon Synod
Tumblr media
As a Brazilian Catholic, how I feel about something that concerns my country and my faith.
So I am three months late to talk about something that happened literally last year in October, but health reasons prevented me from fully focusing on it. This is an topic that many friends have asked me to discuss regarding the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon region given that it’s located within my country Brazil, as well as pretty much all northern countries in South America (Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, etc.). It has been a very concerning and controversial topic among Catholics and if you want a short answer for what I think: the Synod is horribly misguided, seeks easy answers for complex situations and critics are right to be upset. I will elaborate why below and tried to be as nuanced as possible.
For the longest time, ordination of women was a topic advocated by several liberal movements in Catholicism for a variety of reasons, but in context of the Synod, it was to address the priesthood shortage within the Amazon region. This has been a problem for decades, and in Brazil in particular, part of a greater issue regarding the clergy being undisciplined and poorly trained even during the Imperial days when Catholicism was the state religion of my country. In addition, married men and lay people were also cogitated to become priests for the same reason.
It should be noted that this has been allowed in the Eastern Catholic Rite where married men are allowed to become priests, though they can’t marry again should their spouse dies. While my position on the ordination of women is very clear (it’s a nope), in theory it probably wouldn’t be such a big problem if at least married men could become priests, right? Well, it has been pointed out by Greek-Catholics that even this measure hasn’t helped the shortage of priests within their own rite, so it’s not an very practical solution to the problem in the Amazon.
Another big problem is the interaction with the natives and the focus on the environment because sometimes I wonder if the Vatican really understand the complexity of the situation regarding them. I’ve read the documents and I was frustrated at the misguided attempts at ecumenism towards a culture that is drastically different (for example, quoting Exodus 3:5 in context of the ground, i.e. the land being sacred to the natives too). Furthermore, they tend to view the natives’ unrest against encroaching farmers and landowners in black and white, when the reality is far more complicated and they are siding with the ones least willing to compromise. There is also the fact plenty of these tribes haven’t been contacted and are still vulnerable to common diseases we are immune to.
Now, the most controversial part the Synod is definitely the Pachamama idol, the pre-Colombia deity that used to be worshiped (and it still is) by many Latin American tribes. So for reference: I am not exactly a Traditionalist Catholic, I’m a pretty average Roman Catholic (i.e. I don’t mind Novus Ordus), but even then, the idols being displayed in the Vatican were completely unacceptable. Not even during my secular years in college I would have approved that. I would have probably criticized the two Austrian men who threw that idol in the Tiber in other circumstances (I would have argued it should have been kept as a museum piece - where it should have belong rather than being worshiped), but I was so livid that I really didn’t care and I applauded it.
There is a explanation to all of this: Pope Francis is very concerned with respecting people of other cultures and at the same time, he understands that there is a crisis in the church and wants to invite more people into it. As such, he is willing to compromise with them so they can enter on their terms instead of the Church’s. Hence, the Pachamama idol is incorporated into Catholicism in order to make it more palatable to natives. I know some people are going to use medieval examples where pagan deities were “identified” as Christian symbols in order to bring Europeans under Christendom in order to set up an precedent for this event, but honestly, it doesn’t cut it. To cut a long story short, the circumstances back then do not apply now and they didn’t affect the church as much as this whole debacle is doing.
So while I pretty much side with the critics on this situation, I do have to say an inconvenient truth: many have failed to provide a solution or at least an alternative to the Synod. Granted, this is an very difficult answer and probably beyond even the ability of Latin American countries to answer, but the responses I’ve gotten are really disheartening like “we should leave them alone because they are unimportant”, “forcing them to Catholicisim would be colonialism” (even though no one suggested that) or that simply the Synod shouldn’t have happened regardless of motivations or circumstances.
It’s very frustrating that Traditional Catholics don’t usually care about the problems of the World, but complain without doing anything about it in general. This illustrated by one advice I recall being given by Trads who strongly disagreed about Francis’ teachings: “wait”. We have to wait until he passes on and a new Pope takes place. I can understand that somewhat because it’s better to say nothing/do nothing than disobey him or not consider him a Pope, but still inaction is inaction.
A friend of mine said that fixing the church’s problem should take priority over evangelizing natives which is a position I find very agreeable. Why bring natives into the church while it’s in disarray - and even worse, unintentionally make them part of the problem? I could say the evangelization of Latin America was only possible because of Counter-Reformation institutions. Of course, some might say that evangelization is more important than reforming, but this is up to your personal opinion.
Missionary work is important for we are called to be fishers of men. I am not saying the Amazon Synod was malevolent or anything because it’s trying to address a problem that has been going on for a long time, which isn’t helped by outside factors like governments being incapable of protecting missionaries without infringing on the natives’ rights. The main problem is that the Synod is completely misguided in how it’s conducted.
I conclude by saying I wish I had an answer for this, but the Amazon Synod is actually more delicate than many detractors seem to believe. There are actual problems it intends to solve and I am not very opposed to some of it’s methods (in theory that is, in practice that is another story), but the Pachamama display made it all much harder to support. Which is all made more tragic.
What are your thoughts on the Synod? Give me your thoughts and what do you think it should have been done?
