tell me why my white ass is in the airport like 4 hours early. anyway. juve's mom probably cheated on her dad and hess might have accidentally killed her mom via burning her from the inside out and eliciting a hasty c-section 👎

@sardonic-the-writer you have done this.
it's 3 different layers; human family tree(black), horse family tree(red), horse colorations(blue). i thought showing them all on top of each other would describe well what's going on in my brain currently. this is about 80 years before my sona is born.
i found potentially good resources on the 1900's transportation situation i have to figure out, but they're all paywalled. the thing is that i really need to sort it out before i can really continue either family tree,, cuz that would have an affect on when these two have children jne. jne.. i have approximate ages for that but i would really like to lock it down so i dont accidentally have like 10 years of leeway on the age of my sona's dad.
fml. the fact that i am genuinely enjoying this though. give me a silly reason to research something and ill put my whole life into it.

think the key difference between alana and hester and why i find one of them so much more sympathetic than the other despite them being in similar circumstances is that it would've been so much easier for alana to stop the trauma cycle in her family. she made the active choice to bring kids into what she KNEW was an incredibly dysfunctional political dynasty and even though we are repeatedly told in wayward (even by outsiders like sybella!) that fisk was dying/losing his power she still did nothing to curtail any of his abuses (exiling ollivan, trying to send cassia to the docklands). alana chose to disengage entirely to the point where she has zero idea about any of her own daughter's hobbies or interests because she doesn't want to face the consequences of her own inaction. say what you like about hester man but that girl watched her entire family get slaughtered in a basement when she was fifteen and got stuck with not only survivors guilt but a wholeass toddler + faction to rule and she still did everything she possibly could to protect gedeon's innocence and let him remain a child. she had no idea that letting eliot track down the traitor would result in him killing his own father. even after eliot was forced to turn triple agent she obfuscated everything to protect him until the very end. her biggest flaw is ultimately that she refused to share the burden with anyone else and it made her bitter and resentful and that is far more forgivable than alana's see no evil hear no evil strategy

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a one-day event, not a week or a month, like Pride. When researching this article, there is an apparent reason for that: it is too much. It is too much for any person to bear to have a full week of scrolling through the names. It begins with Rita Hester, who was murdered a week before her 35th birthday, and her murder inspired the first Transgender Day of Remembrance. The First Day of Remembrance was then just a small candlelight vigil held in her honour and has since grown to include ceremonies worldwide.

Just finished a book I wanted to share cause I think some fellow Solarpunks might like.
Tumblr media
Green Rising by Lauren James is set in the modern world where people aged between 9 and 20 have suddenly developed the power to grow plants, and are such named "Greenfingers"
It follows three different teenagers with such powers.
Gabrielle Ventura, climate activist, anarchist, leader of Climate Rebellion and the first person to develop the powers in the middle of a protest.
She uses this publicity to help spread information about climate change and ways to combat it and proclaims the powers must of been given to them specifically to fight climate change.
Hester Daleport, daughter of the owner of Daleport industries who's main export is oil.
She starts a team of greenfingers as a cover up when her own powers act up in a meeting but throughout the book she learns the real impact of what her fathers company is doing and Fights to stop it.
Theo Carthew, son of a fisherman in England who was already struggling, then looses all income when their boat is crashed by an unmarked Daleport rig.
Theo takes a job as one of Hesters greenfingers to keep his family afloat and is the main person to help expose her to the companies impact.
While it doesn't speak on every important topic relating to this it does touch on the consequences of trying to help when being informed and causing more harm.
And how big risky actions could have no or even negative impact.
(Highly reccomend this post by @thefloralmenace for more information on that)
TW for Body horror (plants growing in and over bodies) but I think that's the only one.

since i haven't seen it being pointed out before
all of the first stoats' names essentially mean "light"
kiran is of sanskrit origin meaning "ray of light" (and, according to wikipedia, an explicitly unisex name), uri is a hebrew name meaning "my light", hester is a variant of the name esther (of biblical/jewish origin) which comes from the same old persian root as the word "star", and, while i didn't find any particularly reliable source, various babyname websites at least seem to agree that jomei is a japanese name meaning "spread light"
additionally, their names seem to correlate with their purpose/position in last bast:
jomei is the speaker, they are in charge of propaganda - quite literally spreading the belief system and worldview of the first stoats aka the Light. it feels like this name is extremely straightforward in its meaning, but i was also unable to find much else on it, so there may be some additional hidden truth that i'm missing so far.
hester is the silence (the one with the gas mask missing their lower jaw and tongue) and their sphere of influence is secrets. now, i'm no religious scholar, and i have all of my information from quite literally the introductory paragraphs of the wikipedia article on the name esther. however, it seems that queen esther only took this name after ascending to the throne of persia to hide her true identity. this is reflected in the hebrew root of the name esther translating into "hide"/"conceal". (i am unable to provide more info on this, but anybody with a working understanding of how hebrew works and/or with more insight on the book of esther, feel free to interject/correct/add on to this)
uri is our beloved stoat pope. apparently, the name uri comes from the verb for "to shine" (to either be or to give light) and the mark of possession, resulting in the first connotation i mentioned earlier - "my light". this possessive marker, however, can also be interpreted as the name Yah which would be an abbreviation of YHWH - a marker of the divine, if you will. Therefore, Uri can also mean "Yah is my light", a very fitting name for the stoat whose department we only see called "faith".
i was unable to find a deeper meaning behind kiran's name, although to me "beam of light" feels very much like a name befitting the first stoats' leader. considering the way they commanded the wolf of theseus, it also seems to reflect the way their magic/their brand of control worked (their line of sight was part of how they controlled the wolf, indicating that was a key part of either their magic or the conditioning inflicted on the wolf - i'm partial towards the latter, considering how the wolf reacted to tula after she healed it). if anybody has anything more concrete to offer, though, i am all ears!
anyways, the first stoats' names are really cool, and we as a fandom don't talk enough about them because they died so fast. huge props to aabria for this fun bit of world building!
(disclaimer: as mentioned above, i have no background in theology or judaism, nor do i have any deeper knowledge of sanskrit, hindi, and indian mythology/folklore, nor japanese, and japanese mythology which would give me a deeper understanding of these names. my information comes from google and while i did try my best to verify the claims, i am fallible and happen to currently be very tired, so please correct me, if i made any mistakes!)

Hey! So I’ve got an Addams Family question for ya! I tried researching it on my own, and couldn’t really find a definitive answer, but it seems that you’ve got it figured out; What is Grandmama’s name? And whose side of the family is she from? Frump or Addams?
Also, as always, wishing you the best of luck in healing both physically and mentally from all of your hospital and personal ordeals!
There are several iterations of Grandmama in Addams family lore, but the original one was always Morticia's mother, and was eventually given the name Hester. Being as how there is already a Fester Addams and an Esther Sinclair, I went with Esmeralda, which is what her name was in Addams Family Reunion.
She says her full name several times in both Home and Away and You, Me, Us, so my version is Esmeralda Frump.
ALSO THANK YOU FOR THE WELL WISHES, I'M STILL BREATHING. 😭💀

August feels. Blurry. The Thursday of the year. Of the summer? IT feels like the year. I managed to fill out my entire Summer Bingo Board for the library. I haven't heard back about winning any prizes, but I had fun and that's what counts. Bingo made me branch out of my comfort zone which was really neat. Can't say I'll do it more often, a comfort zone is comfortable, but I do enjoy reading something Different every now and then. Did some crafty things this month, which has been a lot of fun, and I've been Smart and Wise and started on holiday gifts so I'm not scrambling in December. It's called personal growth~
Tumblr media
The Bone Season: Tenth Anniversary Edition by Samantha Shannon ⭐⭐ - I'm salty about this. Yes, it's an improvement, but it still sucks. The world and magic is so neat, but we're stuck with a plot Like That. Made me do an actual full review on goodreads and on tumblr if you want all the details.
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon ⭐⭐- I kept my original rating because honestly I felt the same as I did years ago. It's worse than the updated version, but it's the core of the novel that needs changing. Props to this one at least for making Paige asexual. I do not want to see this book on ace book lists ever again.
The Adventure Zone: The Suffering Game by The McElroys and Carey Pietsch ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- One of the best installments so far. The art is AMAZING, I love the meta they're doing with Griffin and The Hunger, it was a little rushed and I'm bummed we aren't getting a full adaptation of The Stolen Century, but this is still right up there with Petals to the Metal for me!
Tumblr media
The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - T Kingfisher has never written a bad novel to me, but this one did take me longer than her others to really click. The audio narrator had some inflections that didn't work for my brain, but once they went through the door, things got Weird and picked up. These two made so many stupid decisions, but it still felt in character! Big Stan Pines energy coming from that uncle.
Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves by Nicola Twilley ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - For book bingo! Got me a square for Read Nonfiction, Read Something About The Environment, and Read Something You Found from Book Page (a magazine advertising new and upcoming books). AND it had a local connection. I learned a lot, it was really neat and didn't feel like I was reading a textbook. It was very engaging, and has me looking at grocery stores differently. It was hard to find, though, because Frostbite is a very common name in the urban fantasy romance genre.
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Oof. Very heavy, very creepy, very GOOD. Did not expect the many graphic dog deaths, but that was on me. Technically I WAS warned, my brain just didn't register "SGJ dogs are not safe" as "The dog dies in this one". The audio narrator was very good, but I had to listen to the opening a couple times to really get everything to click. It might've been easier had I" read it myself, but the cadence of the narrator really added to the story.
The Last Heir to Blackwood Library by Hester Fox ⭐ - Wow when was the last time I had a true one star read. (Actually not too long ago. It was The Novice.) This wanted so badly to be The Haunting of Hill House, but if you want another book like Hill House, just read Starling House. We missed what actually happened in the book because the main character was losing her memory. If you want that, go read Harrow the Ninth. This was a mess and I hated it.
On that note, I need to read something to recharge my faith in books, so MURDERBOT TIME! That's my only reading plan for September, but now I'm feeling Rushed because the year is almost over and I still have about half of my reading goals list left. Whoops. I'd also like to at least attempt some of the Swordtember prompts, if not do all of them. That looks like a lot of fun! So! Onward we go!
