326. “Why are you baking muffins at three in the morning?”

Hero almost jumps. “Oh. Ursula, hi, sorry, I wasn’t expecting anyone–”

Ursula moves closer, bare feet walking across the tile in the kitchen. “Yeah, because it’s three in the morning.”

Hero smiles. “Yes. That.”

She resumes mixing the eggs into the flour mixture, and doesn’t stop until Ursula says, “Hey. I think it’s done.”

“Is it?”

Hero stares at the bowl. There are probably still some clumps in there that need to be whisked more, if she could just try hard enough–

“Hero. It’s alright.”

Eventually, Hero stops. 

Ursula is very close, but she doesn’t touch her. She says, “Can I help?”

After a moment of reading the recipe over another three times, Hero answers, “Yeah. Yeah, that’d be great.”

She frowns as Ursula puts the muffin wrappers in the muffin sheet. “Why are you up so late?”

Ursula shrugs, not looking at her. “I dunno, it’s–I guess I’m just stressing about university things. Like, what if my photography never takes off? What if I’m one of those film students who ends up waitressing for the rest of my life?”

Hero nods, and adds extra vanilla into the batter because that’s how it’s done in her house. It’s what her mums like to do. She misses them, she should probably Skype with them sometime soon. “Yeah, I get that. I mean, graphic design is useful and fun, but who knows if anything’s going to come of it?”

Ursula sighs, placing an extra muffin wrapper back in the package. “It’s scary.”

“It is. But Ursula,” Hero says, and Ursula finally looks at her. “Whatever you end up doing, you’re going to be ok. If you need help looking into internships and job prospects, let me know. I’m here for you, of course.”

Ursula smiles tremblingly. “Of course.” She blows dust off of her glasses. “Sorry, I know that this isn’t like, a huge deal, not like–” Ursula puts her glasses back on and glances at the time on the microwave. Her voice quiets. “Do you want to talk about it?”  

Her hands are coated with flour, and now it’s 3:11 in the morning, but Hero takes Ursula’s hand, and kisses her knuckles. “You don’t have to be sorry. Thank you for telling me about what’s stressing you out. It really is scary! It is. And it’s important to you, so it’s important to me.”

A comfortable silence settles between them. Thank God it’s the weekend, and they don’t have to get up early tomorrow for work or school. 

Hero pours the batter into the muffin tins, and Ursula puts them into the oven.

As they’re waiting for them to bake, Hero says, “It’s been, you know, two years, but sometimes I still–I get it in my head that if I just did everything right, none of it would have happened? So like, I need to act perfect now, to make up for it. So I worry so much about–well, about a lot of things, but mostly about not being perfect, about getting things wrong, and I hear–I still hear his voice at that party. Stupid.” Hero swallows and takes Ursula’s hand. “So that’s why I’m here, I guess. I feel like I have to do this to not mess up, whatever that means.”

“Mm.” Ursula never tries to put words in her mouth, just leans against her. “You’re not perfect, and it’s ok to not be perfect. I’m always going to love you. You know that, right?”

“Right,” Hero says, and she does, she does, she does. “It’s like–you’re not going to find the perfect job right away, yeah? You might end up being a waitress forever. But I love you too, I do. I always will.”

The oven beeps after a while, and after Hero has checked three times to make sure the muffins are ready, they take them out and wait for the muffins to cool, and then they eat them, one each, because it’s closer to four in the morning now. 

When they’re finished, Ursula kisses her goodnight, and Hero breathes her in, and she supposes that both of them taste like muffins. She laughs a little, holds Ursula a little too tightly. “Thank you.”

Ursula smiles. “Thank you too. Let’s try to sleep, yeah?”

“Yeah.”

Hero doesn’t fall asleep until six in the morning, but it’s better than not sleeping at all. She curls herself around Ursula, and she breathes in time with her, and sometimes she’s not ok, and this is one of those times. It happens. Hero buries her nose in Ursula’s hair. It’s ok. She’s going to be ok. Ursula’s going to be ok. They’re going to be ok. She repeats this many times, as Claudio’s teenaged voice screams in her head. 

When Hero finally does sleep, she doesn’t dream, and she wakes up to Ursula humming in the kitchen, the smell of pancakes in the air.

Alright if you want a challenge hehe (for the ship ask) If you’ve seen Middlemarch, all the ships excepting Rosie/Lydgate and Dot/Casaubon Also, all the NMTD/LLL ships (the main ones) (is this enough for a hot take? You decide 😂)

Aahh I’ve been meaning to watch middlemarch for so long but I still haven’t gotten around to it! (Fun fact though: I went to camp with the girl who plays dot) Okay anyway nmtd/lolilo ships HERE WE GO: Beadick: in nmtd? God tier. The perfect enemies to friends to lovers storyline tbh. In lolilo? Still kinda cute, but ben was really uhh Like That and it made it not work as well for me. Pedrazar: they had SO MUCH potential and could have been SO GOOD but honestly lolilo really let them down!!! They’re v v cute but the way their relationship actually played out was kinda disappointing for me tbh :/ Hersula: 100000/10. I would DIE for those girls I really would!!!! Winterking: a FANTASTIC concept that absolutely should have been endgame tbh (honestly I would’ve been happy even if they’d just interacted more lmao) Donalduke (which I honestly forgot was even a thing until right now): absolutely NOT. I don’t even know why this is a thing tbh (also honestly? They’re both gay) Freddie/Kit: could have been good but the way it was executed was honestly a mess. NMTDaily: Hero and Ursula’s Transmedia Accounts Debut

- I don’t think I ever knew that Hero had a transmedia Instagram account. That’s new to me! I’m excited to see what else she posts on it throughout the series.

- I do remember Ursula’s tumblr but I don’t know if I ever scrolled back enough to see the photos in the most recent email before. It’s extremely cute that she includes links to follow “My Friend Hero”, “My Friend Bea”, and “My Friend Ben”. She’s a sweetheart. Ursula deserves the world and so much more appreciation.

- It’s also really interesting that she considers herself friends with Ben before the events of the series happen to combine the two halves of the friend group. It’s probably because she’s best friends with Balthazar and he’s the crossover friend who is close friends with both the girls’ group and the boys’ group. I think it’s very possible that Ben doesn’t fully realize that Ursula thinks of him as a friend and not just an acquaintance because she’s so quiet and it can be hard to know what she’s thinking. Now I’m really interested in what their friendship would be like. They probably wouldn’t hang out one on one, but they would enjoy each other and never quite know how to tell each other that. Which is definitely a type of high school friend experience people have that rings true to me. All from the tiny detail of her linking to his channel on her tumblr. I wonder if he links to her channel on his? I bet he does, I have to look out for that.

- Update: oh my god I just scrolled through Ursula’s tumblr and saw that she posted Ben’s first vlog and mentioned in the tags that she helped him edit it! He “tried to do everything himself” and almost managed it, apparently. That says to me that he was probably complaining about how hard editing was, and Ursula offered to help. And I checked, he thanked her in the video description on that vlog. Ben and Ursula canonically hang out and edit his first video just the two of them???? Excuse me, this changes so many things. I am now obsessed with the Ben and Ursula friendship. This is definitely, for Ben, an example of that thing where social anxiety makes you kind of selfish and unappreciative of the friends you do have, because you dislike yourself so much you never believe they really like you, and then you hold them at arm’s length and never realize that’s literally why you’re so lonely. Ben probably feels like he doesn’t know how to talk to Ursula because Ursula is so quiet, and I bet she can get overwhelmed by him, but also sees that his heart is in the right place. And this makes Ursula yet another friend who has doubtless hung out with Bea and Ben separately and heard them complain about each other, so of course she’s on Team Love Gods. She’s just so dear and eager to help her friends, I love Ursula.

- I am also still sad that Ben never had an in-world Tumblr account I could have followed. It’s not story-necessary, but I’d have liked it.

- I kept thinking the grass was bugs and getting scared, but I still like seeing Ursula’s nature photography. She’s definitely growing up to be a pro videographer/photographer/director/cinematographer or something.

- Ursula also posted a picture of a TARDIS cake she and Hero baked for Bea, which, first, why are there not more Hero and Ursula friendship fluff fics AND Hersula ship fics about them baking together? I love this. They are so cute and sweet.

- Does this cake post mean we have an approximate canonical birthday for Beatrice? Baking a cake for someone feels like a birthday thing. It was posted on March 30, so is Bea’s birthday March 30? This is huge, I don’t think we ever got anyone’s birthday except Hero’s elsewhere in the series! Unless the cake is a belated Welcome to Auckland cake? I haven’t rewatched Bea’s first video yet, I’m terrible, I know, so I don’t remember how long she’s been in town. They didn’t actually say it was her birthday, so it’s probably a Welcome cake. Oh well. Still sweet!

- Also, the tags say the cake is banana cake! So Beatrice already likes Ben’s favorite food, and she’s definitely a huge fan of Doctor Who even though she downplays that to avoid praising anything connected to Benedick. She’s so stubborn, I love her, and they are meant to be. This will not be the last detail indicating how much they have in common and see eye-to-eye. I love all of it.

- I also love that this isn’t the last themed cake to appear! I remember the dalek cake from the pizza party later in the series. Ursula and Hero were hobby bakers and shippers on deck from the start!

- The email with the cake post is titled “putting the Who in superwholock”, which is so incredibly 2014, and also makes me realize that the NMTD characters were really only WhoLocks, none of them were Supernatural fans that I remember. I just find that funny given what a behemoth it was and is on tumblr. I don’t blame them, it’s the one of the three I’ve seen the least of too, it’s just amusing. I actually don’t know if it ever even aired over there, to be fair.

- We also got Bea’s first tweet, in the email with her first video, but it’s pretty simple, nothing to dissect. We get some good tweets later on, though! I promise I’ll make a post about Bea’s first video before the next video email on Wednesday. I’ve decided I don’t have to post recaps day-of, I just want to do them eventually.

In which I talk at great length about Much Ado About Nothing, NMTD, adaptational choices, and the character of Don Pedro

So I just got back from being house manager at opening night of a local production of Much Ado About Nothing, and I came out of it with a lot of thoughts. I considered posting this on my other blog, but I think it's actually better for this one. Basically, watching this production, I had the very satisfying feeling that Shakespeare would have been proud. Great acting, great directing, simple set. It was also the first production of MAAD that I've seen since watching Nothing Much To Do (weird, since it's my favorite Shakespeare play), so naturally my experience was slightly colored by that. I kept waiting for the Pedrazar subtext, and it never happened, but that was because the production made different choices, NOT because it's homophobic. The director, who's also playing Don Pedro, is in fact an incredibly gay man who doesn't shy away from subtext but who simply made different choices here. As a matter of fact, there was one particular moment tonight that would have made Hersula shippers very happy. But basically what I came out of the show thinking about was the character of Don Pedro. I hadn't realized until tonight, but that character can be played in a freakish amount of ways without going against Shakespeare at all. Either he actually has feelings for Beatrice or he doesn't. Either her rejection affects him deeply or he doesn't really care. Maybe he royally fucks up, and maybe he just makes a little mistake. He can be redeemed at the end or not or not need redemption in the first place. He can be straight, bi, or gay. He can be a confirmed asshole, a nice guy who makes a mistake, or an impartial leader. Occasionally, he is many of those things. I've seen it all. In this production, Don Pedro is straight and a little insecure, with a fantastic sense of humor. He fucks up royally--more than Claudio does, actually--but then he just realizes what he's done, accepts that he's kind of a horrible human being, and then laughs it off and moves on. I can't think of a more different portrayal than Caleb Wells's in NMTD, but both are valid, and I think it's. very rare play, and a rare character, where they would be. Basically, I hadn't realized before tonight just how complex this character is, or how many layers there can be to a stage character. It also just got me thinking about adaptations in general, and how it's possible to interpret and reimagine while also staying true to the original. I love this sort of thing (obviously, I spend a large chunk of my life reviewing LIWs), and this production was a wonderful experience for me. In this same vein, I do plan on doing some very spoilery LIW comparison posts soon, where I compare different adaptations of the same source material, occasionally referencing other adaptations as well. I'm planning to start with either Northanger Abbey or Little Women, but I have a couple reviews to finish first.

Have I ever mentioned that of all the ships that have crashed and burnt the one that made me cry the most was Hero and Claudio? And even though I ship hersula and meg/hero, that last scene was actually bittersweet.
