i suddenly got this idea where izuku is an anonymous famous editor for youtubers who hire him to edit their videos because he’s a professional at doing it, and katsuki is an upcoming youtube vlogger who travels around the world and yet doesn’t know how to edit his own videos to save his life, so no matter what he does, he always seem to mess up even the basics of editing (part 1/??)

“i think you need professional help” kirishima says as he watches katsuki trying to drag an edited cut on to his video for the umpteenth time that day “shut up, shitty hair just give me a minute-” an error popup. “did you just.. deleted the video?” “....”

katsuki keeps trying, he even watched tutorials on youtube (while skipping important segments ofc because he can totally do that all on his own!) but his patience is wearing thin until kirishima recommended him to someone who’s known in the youtube community for their famous editing skills 

“..deku?” katsuki stares at his screen showing a youtube profile with the name deku as their username and an icon of all might with edited-in sunglasses “okay look, he may seem suspicious to you, but i gotta tell you bakugou, he’s legit, i’ve seen his videos and they look awesome!” well katsuki will be the judge of that despite this deku having 5 mil+ subscribers than him!

the blonde spent the whole day watching deku’s videos which mostly consists of amvs (anime music videos) and games, especially the ones that required a lot of effort to make, plus he even made tutorials! so he gotta give him credit for that, but alas, katsuki is still somehow having trouble following directions and gave up on the latest tutorial video on how to add an easy transition 

when kirishima came to check in with katsuki, all he heard were multiple clicks and grumbled noises, he let out an exasperated sigh “i can’t believe you’re still trying..” “what the fuck do you want me to do kirishima?” katsuki was trying not to flip his table at this point. “hire him obviously!” the red head yells out as if that’s the answer to their problems “..and how do you suppose i do that?” 

it actually took a lot of convincing in kirishima’s part, but katsuki finally threw away his pride and decided to send a message to deku’s business email that was left under his about page on youtube 

“..i want you to become my editor and help me in becoming the #1 youtube travel vlogger in the community” kirishima reads the message out loud that’s displayed on the screen, “you sure you want to send it like this?” “i don’t see anything wrong with it?” “but don’t you think it’s too.. blunt? no formalities or anything like, hello i’ve seen your videos and i would be honored to have you as my editor, you know?” katsuki just shrugged, “it’s too late, i already sent it to him”

about half a day later, deku replied back, “Good afternoon Mr.Explosionmurder, I appreciate that you requested me to become your editor and would like to discuss further details about our agreement via discord. You can contact me by adding my username, deku#2463. I look forward to hearing from you.” to this day, kirishima still can’t believe his eyes when he read the message

“oi shitty hair, what’s a discord?” 

it wasn’t katsuki’s fault that the majority of time he spent in high school was doing his best to stay on top of assignments and projects, plus being in the A honor roll, he didn’t really get to decide on his career until after he graduated, thanks to the courtesy of his parents owning their own modeling industry, he put the money he saved up to good use in traveling around the world and vlogging it for people to see with kirishima as his traveling partner

he explained all of this and his reasonings to deku on discord once he reached out to him and figured out how to use the platform, but katsuki was still suspicious regarding his video editing skills and wanted to see it firsthand on how his videos would look like as a finished product

deku: fair enough, send me your videos and i’ll see what i can do, until then, if you deem it satisfactory, which i’m confident that you will, i request a 50/50 payment on your revenue. take it or leave it. 

for some reason, katsuki agreed to it without a second thought due to the challenging tone from the message; “i can’t believe you! i told you to trust him! why do you have to doubt him?! haven’t you already seen his videos?!” kirishima was full on panicking at this point, how were they going to make money?! “shut up, i know what i’m doing! i know what’s best for my videos!” it was a good chance too since they’re currently in hong kong and planning to shoot the top 10 tourist spots to visit as claimed by an article he found online

a few days later, katsuki finally got all the videos piled up in one folder and sent them all in a google drive to share with deku just as he requested, he even mentioned to him thru discord message to follow the cues he was giving him on his videos such as when he and kirishima took a stroll and tried foods in the temple street night market; “hey deku, i want you to do a close up of kirishima eating the curry fish ball with erotic music playing in the background” he smirks while focusing the camera on the red head eating without a care in the world and not noticing katsuki making the comment, “mmm dude, mmm you gotta try this, it’s so freakin’ good- wait bro, how long have you been pointing the camera at me?” 

in less than a week, deku sent a reply back with the link to the fully edited video; deku: hmm, not gonna lie, but your cues were actually helpful and dare I say, creative? katsuki took it as a compliment and opened the link to the video file, it was about a few GB so it shouldn’t take a long time to upload on youtube, but.. was it ready? he called in kirishima to watch it with him and was actually prepared for it to look horrible despite deku’s obvious talent except.. it was actually pretty good?? better even?! “what did i tell ya katsuki? i told you he was legit,” his partner boasted, just earlier he was embarrassed when the part about him eating the curry fish ball with the “let’s get it on” music in the background showed up while the blonde just rolled his eyes. 

explosionmurder: thanks, and i just saw it, consider yourself hired deku: happy to be of service! i’m looking forward to working with you, mr.explosionmurder! it would be helpful again if you provided the cues during your journey! :)  explosionmurder: don’t mention it and also don’t call me that, call me katsuki  deku: okay, mr.katsuki! [all might emoji]

kastuki found it odd that he became really eager during the exchange but thought nothing of it

a couple of months flew by and katsuki with kirishima in tow have already travelled in 4 other different countries, he even received about 500k+ subscribers, he’s almost to 1 million! as per agreement, he gives half of his revenue to deku which was okay with him since he still has a lot of saved up money in the bank including kirishima’s since they’re sharing it anyway, most of the time, his communication with deku have been entirely professional with a few emojis in between (usually deku’s part), until today that is 

deku: it must be nice to travel 0:  explosionmurder: pfft, what are you talking about? you now have over 7 mil+ subscribers in your channel since i met you, you can go traveling whenever or wherever you want  deku: i can’t  explosionmurder: what do you mean you can’t?

since then, katsuki didn’t want to think too much on what deku said and focused mostly on traveling, those videos won’t work themselves! after he finished, he sent over the videos of his recent trip from india over to deku and as usual, deku delivered it back beautifully edited along with a message 

deku: that’s so cool! you guys went to india? *o* [link to video edit] explosionmurder: yeah, you should’ve seen shitty hair when he tried that really spicy curry, which reminds me, you did what i asked right? deku: of course mr. katsuki! as always, i’ve paid attention to every cue you asked for! [saluting pepe emoji] explosionmurder: good good, i didn’t just hire you to sit on your ass all day  deku: haha you’re not my only contractor you know ^^”  explosionmurder: is that what you meant when you said you couldn’t travel because you’ve been busy? way to be blunt katsuki, he mentally berated himself, but at least deku answered this time, although reluctantly deku: ...let’s just say im stuck at home  in that very moment, is when everything changed between them explosionmurder: alright nerd, you sound depressed as hell so i’m going to give you the decision to decide on where we’re going to travel to next, think of it as a reward for all you’ve done for us  deku: asdkjflas that’s too much! T_T are you sure mr. katsuki??? explosionmurder: i’m waiting, you got 3 seconds starting now, 3  deku: america! i’ve been wanting to go to america...

katsuki told kirishima his plans, then the spiky red head gave him a pat on the back and a thumbs up, “so you do have a sentimental bone in your body!” kirishima was almost close to being dead that very same day 

when they arrived to america, he asked deku the list of things he wanted to see and most of them were, “all might amusement park, all might cafe, all might- is there anything else the nerd likes besides all might and superheroes?” katsuki says while viewing the list in the hotel they’re staying at. “give him a break, you said so yourself that he couldn’t leave his house, so this is the least we can do for him and for all the hard work he put in our videos,” kirishima reasoned with him

on the last day of their trip, katsuki did his routine in piling the videos together and sending them to deku with the attached message, “i actually bought you a souvenir if you want it, looked like the type of shit you would like, you’ll see what it is in the videos i’ve sent you” they’ve known each other long enough so he thought why the hell not, it’s just a matter of getting his PO address, and the response to this was immediate, “AAA I SAW IT! THANK YOU THANK YOU!” <3<3 <(^w^<)

it was an all might limited edition figurine only available in the US 

for the first time, deku took two days longer to finish than katsuki expected him to since they’ve started because he always goes through them pretty quickly, maybe he’s too busy making them look up-to-par? whatever the case was, when katsuki received the video, it already had a title for it, “MY AWESOME TRIP TO AMERICA PLUS ULTRA!” kirishima just laughed and told him to keep it in honor of deku so he left it like that, “this better give me some views,” he grumbled and uploaded it the night before they went to bed, he wasn’t really worried in checking it out either because he has faith in deku’s abilities  

the morning after was hectic, katsuki has been receiving notifications upon notifications on the “travel bros” (courtesy of kirishima) twitter since last night, one in particular caught his eye, “i can’t believe deku and katsuki are dating! who would’ve thought!” what?

a short video appeared underneath that came from the video he uploaded, and regretfully never took a look at, showing katsuki saying to the camera as he held the AM figurine, “deku, you should’ve been here, look at what i got you, nerd,” at first glance, it was supposed to look normal (from the original video!) except hearts and sparkles began appearing around katsuki as he smirks up at the camera, what the fuck? besides, deku was suppose to edit that all out! for every cue in every part where he says deku’s name, he was expected to delete them like he usually does! even though it was no secret that deku was his video editor, he distinctly remembers mentioning about him in a video they took way back when they first started out their contract agreement

meanwhile, kirishima was having a field day, he finally saw their video while katsuki kept on seeing other short videos of him on twitter from different segments of the trip in which he either had sparkles or hearts around him, especially when he mentions deku’s name; “bro you won’t believe this, our subscribers grew up to over 1 million last night!” kirishima yells enthusiastically, but when he noticed katsuki not paying attention to him, he looked over his shoulder to check what he was looking at. “oh that, you know those aren’t fanmade videos, right?” katsuki unblinkingly turned to look at him, “you mean..?” kirishima gave him a toothy grin, “yep!” 

a video call from discord, “dekuuuu, what is the meaning of this?” a squeaky voice, “i-I’m so sorry i got carried away and i couldn’t help it! all might was too beautiful including you and-!” “..what did you just say?”

A/N: Title is inspired by the album of the same title by The Pretty Reckless. The vibe fits.

You were excited to move into the apartment building with your friends and band members. Starting college was always a dread to you, you despised the idea of dorms, you didn´t want to be roomed with people you didn´t even know and it would be such a drag to practice and go to the studio too. Luckily you somehow got a cheap apartment near campus.

Your band wasn´t that popular, but you played some gigs a bars and your social media presence and following wasn´t too much so that you´d still count as an underground band. You never wanted to become famous, seriously, it all started when you shared your music on YouTube.

People liked it and you took it serious, saving up to record an album. It was really nice being able and having the time to follow your dreams and ambitions like that.

Currently you were busy carrying the boxes up the staircase, your families lent you a big van and everything fit in there, you would need help moving the furniture though.

“Bro, we have new neighbors!” Bokuto exclaimed, looking at Kuroo with a spark of excitement in his eyes.

The latter was busy sorting his textbooks and barely looked up at him.

“Oh yeah?” he absently feigned interest while thinking about how many minutes he needed to plan in for the way to his faculty.

“Yeah! Come on, let´s help them carry their stuff!” he tugged at Kuroo´s shirt and he groaned, getting up reluctantly.

He decided that he´d get up thirty minutes earlier just in case, he didn´t want to be late.

The two got out of their apartment which was right across yours.

Kuroo´s eyes went wide as he caught a glimpse of you, this couldn´t be… this had to be a dream.

“Yo, that´s (Y/N) from (Y/B/N)” he hushed quietly, not believing his eyes.

“That singer you have a crush on?” Bokuto asked, Kuroo never shut up about you and introduced your music to his best friend.

Kuroo nodded and thought way too much about what that all meant.

“All the more reason to help them!” Bokuto announced, walking over to your apartment full of confidence while Kuroo followed with a heart that was beating way too fast, he could swear he´d pass out any moment.

“Hey! You´re new here right? We´re your neighbors and thought you could use some help, can we help you carry your stuff?” he beamed while Kuroo looked at the floor as if it was the most interesting thing he ever saw.

“Uh, alright” you said, he sure was straight forward but you really could use the help.

“Thanks for the offer, we were just thinking about how the hell we were gonna get the furniture up here” you thanked him and smiled slightly.

“I´m Bokuto by the way, this is Kuroo!” he introduced the two and you nodded, smiling as you introduced yourself and your friends.

Kuroo swore the moment your eyes landed on him was the moment his heart stopped beating.

Bokuto was quick to the task and carried up the boxes like a champ, he made conversation about what classes you were taking, Kuroo would have the same history class as you which filled him with dread and excitement at the same time, Bokuto also proudly told you about the fact that they both were on the volleyball team and how anxious they were before the letter of affirmation came in. Then he told you about their friendship, how they met and all that.

It was nice, they seemed like cool guys, though Kuroo didn´t really say much, but maybe he was just shy.

Right now Kuroo was handed your guitar by your friend and was so scared that he´d drop it, he carried it upstairs with the utmost care.

Bokuto noticed that his friend had trouble approaching you, as always when it came to new people. But this was different. With normal new people he could still make small talk while being uncomfortable, especially with Bokuto around he usually opened up pretty quickly.

Though, the whole situation with him having a crush on you made that harder for him, so Bokuto noticed. Kuroo didn´t even look at you, he could see how anxious and jumpy he was.

“Hey, you have a lot of instruments and amps and stuff, are you in a band or something?” Bokuto asked and Kuroo wanted to sink into the ground, he didn´t like the direction this was going in at all.

“Yeah actually, we´re (Y/B/N). I don´t know if you´ve heard of us” you nonchalantly said.

“Oh that´s so cool! Hey, Kuroo, isn´t that the band you always talk about?” he beamed.

No. Oh no. He didn´t. That fucker, he knew how bad he was at making conversation. Especially now, he didn´t want to make a fool out of himself.

Bokuto only meant well, he knew that, but still. That was a dick move.

He felt like a deer in headlights, you were looking at him, actually looking, awaiting his answer.

“Um… yeah… I really like your music actually. It helps a lot” god, that sounded stupid, way to go, Kuroo.

“I mean it´s just very touching, you know? And I don´t know… it´s just every time I listen to it, I feel less alone. Not that I´m alone, I mean I have my friends… But still, your music is just very… special to me. And your… your voice is amazing” that did not help at all, why didn´t anyone stop him? Bokuto knew that he had a bad habit of rambling when he was nervous, so why did he let him embarrass himself like that? Especially in front of you.

You probably thought of him as a crazy fan now, well, to be fair, he was. He was borderline obsessed with your music and your social media posts always made him laugh, he felt so close to you whenever he watched your YouTube videos, hell, he knew how to play your songs on his guitar because he watched your tutorials that much. He even started playing guitar just because of you, because you said you did it because it was therapeutic, because it helped you calm down and focus and fuck, he understood. For him it was the same.

Kuroo wasn´t always in a good head space, in fact he seldom was. Not many people knew that, he was always scared to tell anyone because being mentally not okay was frowned upon by many people. Your music always made him feel safe, understood and listened to.

It was his safe space and for him sharing that with Bokuto deepened their friendship immensely, because it was like sharing a deep secret, a part of himself that he couldn´t put into words, but you could. And you did it so beautifully.

Yeah it was silly, but Kuroo always thought about how your first meeting would go if he ever had the chance to.

Never in a million years did he think that you´d end up being neighbors and in the same history class at that.

And of course he had to make an embarrassing first impression. Great job.

You looked at him in awe, nobody ever complimented your music like that, nobody ever really gave a shit.

“Thanks, that means a lot. I mean, we were just kids playing around in our garage, really. And one day we said fuck it, let´s record it, what could go wrong? It´s amazing really, this platform we have, this opportunity to speak our minds. To be honest I never really thought we could have that much of an impact on someone, so really, this means the world to us” you smiled.

That was the icebreaker for Kuroo, you two talked a lot about your musical influences, you noticed that you liked the same bands too, then he told you how he discovered you and overall you thought he was really down to earth and just nice to be around.

After the two of them helped you move in, you agreed that you´d definitely need to hang out more often.

And you did. The first time you were in their apartment you and Kuroo had a project to work on, you made a pretty great team and finished it rather quickly, so he showed you around a bit.

Their apartment wasn´t as messy as you thought it would be, but then again, Kuroo did mention that Bokuto was a stress cleaner.

When you got to his room, you talked about how you two got into playing instruments and got to know each other better.

It was easy to talk to him, not at all awkward which you appreciated and you found yourself in his company more often that not, you practically knew his apartment better than yours.

Often you´d catch him practicing on his guitar, humming along to the melodies in his head and scribbling down notes, too caught up into it to notice you.

He always looked so peaceful doing this, so calm and you couldn´t disrupt that, so you just waited for him and smiled to yourself.

“Have you ever thought about being in a band?” you asked one day when you were sitting on the couch and watching some movie long forgotten.

“Yeah, but I don´t think it´s for me. I mean, first of all I´m not good enough to play anyways. And also I wouldn´t like playing publicly, I´d get too anxious” he answered, it wasn´t as if the thought never crossed his mind.

In fact it did more often than he liked, but he knew that he would never make it. He preferred being on the sidelines, watching you.

He enjoyed it more than the inevitable stage fright, he liked playing his guitar in his room with Bokuto humming along.

“I think you´re pretty good” you mentioned, only having picked up bits and pieces from his playing, but what you heard convinced you thoroughly. You wanted to hear more, but that wasn´t really because you wanted Kuroo to be a musician, you just wanted to watch him play.

Something about the thought of Kuroo playing something on his guitar for you made your heart flutter and your face heat up.

“Hey, (Y/N)! Do you need help setting up later?” Bokuto announced his presence after getting groceries.

He closed the door behind him before he put away the groceries and joined you two.

“I´d appreciate it a lot, but only if you´re free” you answered.

It was nice that the two helped you and your band carry your stuff and set it all up, yet you couldn´t help but feel guilty.

After all they were busy too.

“I have nothing to do, so… Kuroo, you in too?” he asked to which Kuroo nodded way too fast.

He used every opportunity he could to spend more time with you, he felt like a desperate groupie.

But then again, you were so much more to him than the singer of his favorite band now.

“Amazing, you guys are the best! I´ll treat you to dinner, okay?” you smiled.

“Hell yeah!” Bokuto exclaimed, his eyes sparkling at the thought of his favorite food.

In the evening you and your band got ready, already packing together the stuff you´d need later, before picking up Kuroo and Bokuto.

Kuroo´s breath stopped for an instance when he laid eyes on you…

“You look great” he said without thinking about it, immediately regretting it and averting his eyes.

Bokuto was quite proud that he had the guts to give you a compliment and patted his back in sympathy.

“Thanks, you too” you felt your heart race as warmth spread throughout your body, you couldn´t stop smiling on the whole way to the location.

You started setting up with your band and with the help of Kuroo and Bokuto you finished relatively quickly.

“Thanks for your help!” you said, reminding them to meet you after the show to take them out for dinner.

Bokuto told you that it wasn´t a problem and pulled Kuroo to the side with him.

“So, did you tell them you liked them already?” he confronted him.

Right after you moved in, Kuroo was adamant on telling you how he felt, but every time he even thought about it, he´d freeze up completely.

He shook his head in defeat, sighing.

“It´s alright, now´s your chance” Bokuto turned him around so that he could see you where you sat alone on the stage.

“What? No! Not right now, that´s too soon… I didn´t even prepare what I wanna say” he panicked, Kuroo couldn´t do spontaneous, if he didn´t have time to prepare, he got anxious.

“Come on, there´s no one around, it´s the perfect time. You got this” Bokuto tried to motivate him which worked decently enough.

“Will you stop pestering me if I do it?” Kuroo groaned, already feeling embarrassed.

“Maybe” Bokuto grinned, but that was enough for Kuroo.

You´d say no anyway and he could brush it off as some stupid dare, yeah, that sounded plausible.

So, with the last remaining bit of bravery, he made his way to you.

Your face lit up as you saw him approaching, you wondered what you wanted.

“I can´t wait for the show, I´m really excited” he said to start the conversation.

“That means a lot, thanks again for helping us set up” you smiled at him.

“Ah, don´t mention it, it was nothing” he returned the smile and then took a deep breath.

“Um, actually I wanted to talk to you about something before the show starts…” he started, you looked at him curiously.

“I wanted to ask you this for a while actually, and um, it´s completely okay if you say no or don´t wanna hang out with me anymore, I understand… but uh, would you maybe wanna go out with me sometime?” he stumbled over his words quite a bit but overall Kuroo was glad he finally asked you, he felt good and kind of relieved.

You were still processing his words, trying to figure out whether he had meant it or not, though, by the look on his face, he was serious.

“I´d love that” you gave him a warm smile and watched his face light up with happiness.

“Really? That´s amazing!” he couldn´t stop smiling and turned around to Bokuto who was giving him thumbs up.

Marco woke to the sound of his alarm clock, initially panicking as he scrambled off the floor only to realize it was the weekend, placing himself on the bed and taking out his phone to text Tom. Maybe he could ask him for advice before the due date was up? Though before he could finish he heard laughter downstairs, laughter that didn't sound like anyone in his family. He shoved the phone into his pocket and forced himself to get up and check it out.

He shut his bedroom door behind him and wiped at his eyes to get the sleep out as he headed down the steps.

And there at the dining table, was not only tom, but tom's parents, eating a breakfast of cinnamon rolls with marco's parents and sister, his mother waving at his arrival. "Ah marco! You're finally up! The Lucitors brought us breakfast to celebrate tom being allowed into your class! Isn't that great! C'mon, come join us!". One look at tom's face was enough to tell marco this was as sudden for him as it was for marco, most likely brought about him that very morning.

Marco awkwardly headed over and filled up his plate, taking a seat as the parents seemed well to actually be getting alone better then he thought?

When his parents first met star's...it took a little time for them to get used to them, here...well thankfully it seemed tom's parents were a little more...normal. Though Tom's mother wasn't speaking, his father seemed to do better well on speaking for the two of them and upon seeing the couple holding hands he got a pretty good idea why they instantly connected. Nothing like being the most overally affectionate parents ever to bond over, hopefully tom's parents were a little less affectionate then his own.

Ms Lucitor happily waved to Marco who waved back awkwardly, taking a bite of his breakfest as their parents droned on, he tapped marco on the shoulder and pointed to his phone. "I've been looking up some of the moves you guys learn in karate to help me practice, I mean...like...I kinda don't want to make a fool of myself...if possible.". Marco looked down to see videos on queue of some old guys showing tutorials on karate moves and smiled, "You're getting really into this huh?".

"I need a hobby...otherwise i never know what to do with myself.".

"Hey, same thing, I was just really into kung fu movies when i was little so i decided i wanted to learn how to do martial arts. Plus my parents thought it would help me make a lot of new friends, though yeah i didn't have a lot of friends before star, but hey...it'll be good to have a friend in my class. Especially a friend who can take Jeremy down.". Tom elbowed him, "Yeah he's left you mainly alone since the day I showed up and exposed him huh?".

"The only reason sensei doesn't just kick him out is because he's rich, we need him to keep the place going..".

"Really?".

"Really, I guess the place just doesn't do too well...it's not exactly popular.", Tom suddenly looked to the table, a look or worry on his face. "Uh...if that's the case then you don't think...with what i did, I put the dojo in danger now do you?". Marco quickly patted his shoulder, "What? No no no, turns out, jeremy kinda is happy to stay if you're joining, i guess to get revenge on you for exposing him, who knows, maybe you could give this place more life and attention.".

"Really? You think so? I just think if I may of ruined your hobbies i'd feel well...bad...like at the time i was just trying to teach that kid a lesson for messing with you.", he scratched at his neck, his green eyes diverting from marco, "Like i'm still new here, if jeremy really keeps the place alive...then what's to say I improve anything? I might just make things worse, especially if i can't resist teaching him a lesson every time he messes with you in front of everyone...like your crush is coming and...".

"Tom, no, c'mon...I want you there, I mean with you taking down the rich kid, just imagine the attention that could bring. I've never been able to stop him so I can't do much, but people are already talking about the fact you called him out and got him exposed. No one's ever been able to really do it before...especially not to some rich kid like him.", the boy's face shifted, a smile creeping across it, "So...you think having me there against jeremy would actually help?".

"Kid's have been trying to take his snobby butt down for years, i think it's a good start to see someone finally get the drop on him and give the place more attention. Besides, it was really awesome seeing you expose him and do that for me...".

"You really mean it?".

"Yeah, i love star, but she's never stood up for me like that, i think it's cool you're willing to stand up for someone you haven't know for all that long. I don't know if i'd have the same courage as you there, half the time i was worried the dojo would kick me out...I mean like dude, how are you so good with this kinda stuff?". The taller boy simply blinked at marco, his mind warped into confusion, as if he had no idea what marco was talking about at all.

"I mean, you talk to your crushes well, you can take down bullies, you're easy to really talk to and get along with...I mean, you're...way cooler then me.", Marco's voice got soft and Tom grabbed marco's hand, motioning for them to talk in the kitchen alone. They quickly slipped out of the view of their parents and Marco felt the counter behind his back as Tom stood in front of him, hands on his shoulders, "Marco...Am I...do you feel like...i'm better then you?".

"Well...".

"Marco...look i'm...i'm not that cool dude, like...i'm not...ok...like I wasn't...always like this. I-I used to blow up at people dude...I...people didn't even want to be around me, I got jealous and I lashed out at people and...dude you're so easy to get along with and to make friends with, you don't lash out at people and make them hate you...marco i...I wasn't like this before. You...you're so good at karate and people don't look at you like you're weird...and you have friends and marco...you're way cooler then me...".

"Really?".

"Yeah, I wasn't lying about anything I said yesterday in the cafeteria to jackie about you being fun and charming and talented, marco, c'mon...honestly...look, you...don't wanna be like me...be yourself...I'd rather you were yourself.", Marco thought for a second briefly and nodded. "I'm sorry, Maybe everything going on has just made me feel like...i'm doing something wrong, I wanna be able to talk to jackie just like you did, I wanna feel more...confident...".

"Marco, you just have to ask, it's ok...I can help you...".

"Really?".

"Yeah, of course...you teach me karate, I'll teach you how to not be so awkward, sound good?".

"Think you can start now considering your parents are here?", Marco was half joking but after that nice visit the last thing he wanted to do was embarrass himself in front of them, and his parents were already making that hard by just being in the same room.". Tom smirked, "I'm not a professional by the way, I...uh...I kinda sorta do embarrassing stuff sometimes...it's um...well the best way to start is to not think too hard about the person you're talking to...or even picture them as someone else...".

"But what if I did that and said something stupid to someone I thought of as someone else?!".

"Well uh...hmm...I don't mean to THAT extent..."

Marco sighed, "I'm sorry Tom, look, i'm kinda used to not really being that great with people most of the time...", but Tom seemed more then sympathetic to marco's cause. "Hey it's...a learning process, you don't have to start off good at it right? You get better over time...and then you'll be just fine.". The boy nodded, "Yeah, yeah, you're right...though...just try and help me embarrass myself at least a little less if you can...ok? I don't wanna end up talking to your parents like i want to with jackie...".

"Uh yeah, let's skip out on that part...", Tom snickered, "Don't worry marco, we're both unsocial weirdos...probably why we're cool friends.". Marco smiled along with him, "Alright alright, enough teasing, our parents are probably wondering where we went...and i'm still hungry.". Tom agreed, "I dunno, it's kinda nice to not have my parents go on about my baby antics for hours...but i'm probably way too hungry anyway so..yeah, let's go before the rolls are all gone.".

Breakfast was quickly scarfed down and the adults moved into the living room, and marco was relieved to see they were getting along just fine.

No tension, thank god.

In fact tom's parents seemed oddly comfortable with the place...for the most part, Tom's mother was smiling but considering she apparently did not speak english, it was obvious she was upset not being able to talk to them and instead having to talk through dave. Though he seemed to notice that himself, holding her hand and trying to comfort her and reassure her. They seemed sweet together, and even Tom seemed to agree instead of feeling some embarrassment for his lovey parents.

That was what marco wanted, someone to comfort him like that and have his back, and made him feel heard and comfortable.

Looking at them in the kitchen as they laughed and talked in the living room, as mariposa chewed on her stuffed rabbit.

He must've been spacing out cause Tom tapped his shoulder and almost spooked him, marco getting into a karate pose in defense and making Tom laugh as he backed off. "Whoa whoa...sorry marco, didn't mean to kinda spook you...", marco sighed and caught his breath, "S-sorry, force of habit...". Tom looked between him and his parents, "You know...they had a hard time getting together, it's a miracle that I'm even here today when you really think about it...".

"Really?".

"Yeah, dad's parents were uncomfortable with her family, and dad basically abandoned them to be with her...learned to speak her language adapted to her culture. I mean i've had some people ask me if i thought that was a good idea but well...i wouldn't be here otherwise. I think he's much happier this way then he would've been otherwise...all because he did everything in his power to be with someone he really cared about. I hope my relationship is like that...".

"You seem to really love your parents despite the embarrassing stuff...", marco noted, tom shrugging. "I mean, they're embarrassing sometimes but they've been pretty supportive of me and everything and well...mom's good to talk to when i need to talk about things i can't with others...". He seemed to be thinking about something, perhaps his last relationship he had told marco about before? But Tom shook it off, nodding to upstairs, "Wanna...teach me some moves to prepare for our first class together? I'd like to go in with some knowledge if possible.".

"Oh, ok, probably a good idea...", Tom quickly headed up as marco followed after.

Tom excitement was admirable, heading inside marco's guest room where his family normally had exchange students stay whenever they hosted one. The place was empty enough that it was perfect for practice for the time being, tom taking off his boots and chilling on the bed. "So tom, how much have you picked up on in terms of watching me?", marco closed the door behind them as tom shrugged, wiggling his toes in his socks, "A little...seems like mostly kicking and robotic arm stuff kinda..".

"Robotic arm stuff?".

"Yeah like you move it like a robot does!", to demonstrate, tom put his arm in an L shape and pretended to do a chop. "Funny, but no...karate is not like a goofy imitation of a robot, it's a form of self defense and shows your strength and power and-". Marco showed off a few moves as tom stared at him blankly, "Well I guess we got a lot to go through since you're still pretty new to it, maybe we could start with your stance maybe? Your arm was all wrong there...".

"It was?"".

"Yes, of course it was! C'mon...let me show you how it's done..".

Tom got up and he quickly felt marco adjust his body behind him, grasping his arm and his waist gently before adjusting him to be in the right pose. Tom felt himself stiffened at marco's touch, especially as marco held his hand and fixed it to where he wanted it. "See, we're trying to get it like that...you're going to wanna hold that pose and...tom?", Marco quickly noticed tom wasn't entirely looking at him as he tapped his shoulder, "Hey C'mon, i thought you wanted to know how-".

"Yeah yeah...uh...sorry..", tom seemed red-faced in embarrassment as he got a hold of himself to listen to marco's instructions.

His eyes focused highly on marco's face, who went on and on about instructions that tom was only halfway paying attention to. To be fair, tom could've done way worse on his first attempt at a chop, at least according to marco, who seemed more then surprised at tom's strength when he asked tom to chop at him and marco blocked it. He thought tom's father seemed strong but yeesh, tom had a lot more power to him then the skinny boy he seemed to be.

At one point marco even fell to the floor from one of tom's hits on him, catching marco highly off guard compared to tom's other failed kicks and hits. Tom almost immediately worrying and rushing to marco's side to make sure he wasn't injured. But Marco not only was fine, but seemed actually impressed, tom was a fast learner it seemed. He was quick to get an understanding of the moves he was trying to learn and the stances he was going for...for the most part.

Tom also seemed to get a little...distracted, if only because tom was too busy looking at marco to focus on his own actions.

Marco had to snicker, tom was kinda a goofball.

Well, he did seem to get a little grumpy every time he screwed up but he shook it off and tried to almost make a joke out of it if he could, laughing it off as best he could.

God, tom was more of a dork then he was.

Tom took a break on the free bed soon after, catching his breath as marco approached, crossing his arms like a stern parent. "Jeez tom, you're like that one kid in class who who acts like they're gonna fail and then gets straight A's, though some of your posture could still use some work...". Tom snorted into the sheets, "It wasn't easy marco, trust me, it only worked out so well because you're such a great teacher and helped me have some idea about what i'm doing...".

"Really?".

"Yeah, duh!".

"Thanks tom...keep this up and you'll be a green belt like me in no time!", the taller boy smiled and gave marco a quick hug, "Thanks marco. i'll keep practicing this, I promise, just work on how to talk with jackie...maybe with a mirror is a good start...or you could even test it on me sometime if you want.". That was an good idea actually, if he tested it on tom it'd probably be 10x less awkward then if he were saying it to jackie herself for the first time.

"Yeah, thanks..".

"Thomas!", Dave suddenly headed up the stairs, catching tom off guard a little, and he looked...anxious?

"Dad? Is uh...everything ok down there?".

"The casserole is burning.", his eyes wandered downstairs and back to Tom, panicking but incredibly serious, he seemed as if he was incredibly used to dealing with bad situations. Marco however, seemed confused, it was breakfast time, why would they have ever made casserole? Not even here, at their own home? But Tom seemed to know exactly what his father was talking about, nodding and more serious then he was just a minute ago, "Sorry, marco, we gotta get going...i'll text you soon! Then we can prepare for our kinda date!".

He quickly started heading out and making sure he didn't leave anything behind as his father ran downstairs and marco called after him.

"Tom!"

'Huh?", tom stopped in his tracks, though his eyes told marco he needed to make it quick.

"Can...i come over again...sometime...to practice?".

a grin appeared on the boy's face, "Yeah, i'll see you then...bye marco!".

And quickly after tom and his family had left the building and to their own house across the street, marco heading down the stairs to find his confused parents scratching their heads at their guests's sudden leave. "Marco...did tom tell you why they were leaving, Mr Lucitor said something about a casserole? And we were just in the middle of talking about my new art too!". Marco shrugged at his dad, picking up his baby sister from the floor and taking out his phone, "You'll have to ask him next time...".

Meanwhile across the street Mr Lucitor was looking at his son who had been staring at the Diaz's house since they arrived.

"So what's this about a "Date with marco?".

leaving Tom to stiffen, before his face turned bright red, "Just a double date with star and marco's crush jackie...we hope...". The man looking over his face, smiling, "Alright, oh and...marco...his family's nice...you found yourself a pretty great friend it seems...".

Tom's eyes turned back to look at the diaz house and ponder, "Yeah...I did didn't i?".

"STAR!", marco was quickly tackled by the blonde's hug as he was shoved onto the ground. Star seemed to be feeling a whole lot better, which was a good thing, especially now. Marco needed some pep in his step if he was going to get through his first real kinda date with jackie, maybe double date. Though tonight was a bit of a homework session with star, and hopefully she would do her own work this time and not copy off his homework sheet.

"So? Tell me!".

"Tell you what?", marco pushed her off as he got to his feet, fixing his outfit.

"What did jackie say about you? You never told me!".

"Oh...", now that he thought about it, he never really did tell Star how the Jackie thing went, he kinda got distracted by her mood at the time and never got back to her on what had happened. "Well tom talked to her and well...I think he really got her kinda sorta interested...maybe?". He simply shrugged, blushing and laughing, "It's a lot better then the plans i came up with. i'll be honest...I'm not sure i could've done it without his help actually.".

"OOOOOOOOO MARCO YOU BABE MAGNET!", Star said, as she squeezed his face in excitement, "I KNEW SHE LIKED YOU! Aw heck yeah, this is going to be AWESOME! You and Jackie are finally going to hang out, you're gonna show her how hot you are, it's gonna be awesome~". She was practically bouncing around the room in excitement, same ole star. Honestly she had been getting so impatient with Marco's lack of progress with the girl this was like Christmas to her.

If Tom hadn't helped, Marco was sure Star would stomp over to Jackie and ask her out for him herself.

"Yeah and Tom will be there to help and make sure things go smoothly...hopefully...",Marco brushed himself off and fixed his hair, "I mean, she doesn't know i like her like that...but i can tell her later...when y'know...she and i are...getting sorta closer maybe...maybe...". But Star was too busy fantasizing and snapped out of it quickly as something came to mind, "Oh! Maybe you could ask to get food with her later, or a movie maybe? Movies are always fun!".

"Maybe...and tom could-".

Star stopped, "Wait Tom? Why do you want him there?".

"Well, Tom could surprise me, maybe sure i don't fail the date?".

Star looked baffled.

"Marco Diaz, you didn't go through all that hassle to be babysitted on your dates for the rest of your life did you?", Star looked mad and Marco didn't really know how to respond, yeah he didn't want to be babysitted, but it felt...comforting, having tom there to look over him and keep him in check so he didn't screw up. Without him there it was just going to be him and Jackie and what if he screwed up in front of jackie? What if she left him in the middle of the date? Alone?

Was it really that weird that Tom seemed like a comforting person to reassure him and make him feel less nervous around his crush?

"Well...star, it's just...".

"No protests Marco Diaz, you gotta march up and ask her out on a date, alone, just the two of you, no tom's creeping around...", she crossed her arms before wagging her finger playfully at Marco, in all fairness, it wasn't like star to really understand, she rarely felt that anxious talking to anyone. The only person she got nervous around was her parents and that was widely different then how Marco felt trying to talk to Jackie and trying to impress her.

It gave him butterflies.

"We'll see how the karate thing goes...you...excited? You rarely come to my lessons...", star giggled, "Well of course i'm excited! I'm gonna see you finally ask Jackie out on a proper date! Most of your lessons kinda go the same but THIS time, oh it's gonna get spicy!".Well, at least Star was excited, hopefully things actually went well and Jeremy didn't decide he wanted to make things any worse or anything, which was a viable option right now.

"Well, we'll see...oh! How have things been at home recently? Your mom off your case yet?", Star froze, stopping in her tracks before coughing into her fist, "Oh uh...yeah kinda sorta...whatever, she's not mad anymore about you helping me cheat...she's mad about...other things right now. She's also been trying to keep dad from doing anything crazy, which is a good thing because he is...". She swayed her arms widely around her face to describe him.

She was pretty accurate on that.

"Work stuff?".

"Something like that...", she drawled off, "But don't worry! She's probably got it...probably...".

"You've never really told me where your mom works, is she like a business woman or something?", Marco plopped onto the couch and rested his feet as star took a seat next to him, "Eh...yeah, something like that...sure...". Star didn't really have the best poker face out there, sometimes she was able to hide stuff, other times her lies were so blatant marco was annoyed beyond belief. You'd think Star could be super honest with her best friend but she had her secrets to keep still.

It was just weird because sometimes they were simple questions.

Was her mom apart of an illegal gang or something?

Actually did marco even want to know?

"Why is she so uptight with you anyway? I mean i know you're a troublemaker...but you always talk about it to me like she gives you little to no freedom at all...i'm surprised she didn't make you sign up for clubs or give you a earlier curfew if she's like that. Some really strict parents keep you for doing anything, but she seems nice enough to kinda let you do almost whatever you want. At least, from what i can tell...i mean, you get to hang out with me.".

"She's...well...she's just uptight...but not THAT uptight...it's...hard to explain actually.", she played with the bottom of her dress, "I wish i had your parents...they're always so friendly and open and don't make you do private lessons and all that junk. Plus you get to go almost anywhere you want and ughh...it's just not fair marco. I really get tired of her sometimes, she complains about everything, and tells me to do this and that and...ugh i'd rather live with you!".

"Honestly Star, maybe it does you well to have rules...keeps you grounded, otherwise you might be getting yourself into things even i can't stop you from doing.", He seemed amused but Star less so, even he had to complain about his parents sometimes...but he couldn't deny the fact to some degree he kinda appreciated them. As long as star's mom wasn't locking her away and keeping her from doing anything she wanted, star was probably exaggerating.

He'd met Moon Butterfly after all, she was strict indeed, but pleasant.

"Ugh...you don't get it Marco!"., she groaned so loud in annoyance she might as well wake up the whole neighborhood.

"C'mon Star, it's ok, things'll work out...who knows, maybe you and your mom will come to an understanding soon...", Star didn't seem so sure but it was Star after all, Marco patted her shoulder as he stood up, motioning upstairs, "Let's get started studying, maybe we can play some video games after if you want...ok?". This livened star up a bit, but only for the later and not the former, the girl racing up the stairs before Marco even could reach them.

The study session actually mostly seemed to go alright when marco could get star to stay still at least.

Though Star did seem to glance at Marco whenever he stopped to text Tom, which seemed to happen literally every minute, making star surprisingly the less distracted studier for once. She'd never seen Marco like this before, so distracted and so..happy about it? Marco was laughing and smirking and talking to himself as he sent Tom stuff and Star rolled her eyes. "Gee Marco, are you sure tom isn't the one you have a major crush on instead of Jackie?", she was joking of course but Marco suddenly got flustered, shoving his phone into his pocket.

"W-what?".

"You kinda look...well...".

Marco suddenly became more flustered, "What? NO! We're just talking, he sent me some funny stuff...". He pulled out his phone again, avoiding star's gaze as she went back to kinda reading, she huffed but didn't press the boy any further.

Game night was always a blast, though Marco seemed to beat star at almost every game that she couldn't make up rules for. Though during the event he kinda wished tom was with them, and he had a feeling star knew he was thinking that as well. To Marco though, asking tom to come over when Star was over was like telling star he didn't think she was as fun to be around alone anymore and he needed someone else to spice their hangs out up these days.

And he didn't want star thinking that.

Though as he won another match, Star groaned into the carpet, laying on her front with her controller lazily in her hands.

She was clearly sick of being beaten at this point, and marco was sure she'd probably drop out to watch movies instead at this rate.

"Ugh, marcooooo...stop being so good!", But marco simply laughed it off, "C'mon Star, i'm not good, you're just out of practice...outta spend more time working on your gaming skills, when you're not studying of course.". Star looked up, her face squished against the floor like a sad puppy, "I bet you couldn't beat Tom...". Her face was moody still, and that was probably meant to snap back at how much she was tired of losing against marco but it put marco off guard.

Tom? Was she thinking about tom? Marco had been thinking about him as soon as he left through their door earlier that day, he hadn't expected star to be thinking about him as well. Well, he did assume she might possibly like the boy didn't he? Of course in that case she'd be thinking about him.

So why was he shocked?

She sent him a challenging glare and Marco simply raised a bushy eyebrow and tried to ignore her face, "Tom? Well, I mean, he tells me he's great with games but i highly doubt it...".

"Well if you're so good then, invite him over and show me!".

Star...wanting TOM over?

Was star still broken?

"Wait...right now?'.

"Yeah tough guy, invite him right now, we'll see whose the best then!", Star must've been desperate to beat marco out if she was inviting tom over, the guy she supossibly hated. Then again, marco rationalized, if she liked him of course she'd ant him around. So it wasn't that weird right? And Marco had wanted tom to come back over to since he had been thinking about him ever since he left right? Star eyed marco up and down, "C'mon, invite him over, otherwise you'll text him the entire time instead and at least with him here you might focus more.".

Marco awkwardly took out his phone one more, sending Tom a text as Star smirked at him mischievously. Of course he could beat Tom at video games, was she crazy? Tom played a fair few of games but he never seemed to be an expert or anything.

At least, as far as Marco could tell.

And before Marco could even bat an eye, Tom had entered the room, only a few minutes after sending out the text. He looked thrilled in fact, though he had clearly ran over and through marco's door without so much as knocking. Though granted at this point, he might as well enter whenever he wanted, janna and star already did that. Even for once Star kinda seemed excited to have him there, even if it was just for petty reasons like wanting to watch him fight marco.

"I hear you wanted me to game?"

"How...what...?".

"Don't worry, my mom thought your family was so cool, they said it was ok if i stayed for dinner, so what we playing?"

"Super Speedster 3, Star's a bit of a sore loser...", He was teasing of course, but it was true. Though despite Star's pouts and eye rolling, she seemed to be more then happy to see marco go against Tom, Tom himself taking her controller. "Sweet, i love racing games...I never really had a lot of people to race against though so i was always racing against the computer...so this'll be kinda nice...but...don't expect me to go easy on you diaz...because i won't.".

"Oh, you're the one who should be worried...lucitor.".

These two were birds of the same feather, just a bunch of nerds.

Marco couldn't hide how happy he was to see tom again, as if they had been apart for years instead of hours, and tom seemed quite similar. His focus more on marco then star and teasing him as he took up the controller and jabbed on about anything, marco following. Most of it was about tips to help the other, but some of it was goofy jokes and what else they could come up with. The two playing the game and star watching right next to them as they laughed together.

Though Star found herself paying more attention to them in the game despite her wanting to watch Tom defeat Marco, which...was exactly what was happening with Tom being in the lead with marco close behind. Marco was quickly getting mad about meeting his match, but Tom seemed to find it funny, teasing and butting marco with his elbow. Marco and Tom seemed to get along really well, they seemed genuinely comfortable around each other naturally and Star couldn't help but feel...happy.

Marco was rarely this happy, even if he was pretty mad right now at having his butt handed to him.

Though Marco wasn't paying too much attention to Star right now as Tom finished before him, effectively beating his long streak of wins after so long. Tom laughing, then Star laughing, and Marco, despite all his frustration, seeing his two friends...getting along well. Star wasn't being weird to Tom, and Tom was actually comfortable around her, granted, it was because they were both laughing at Marco, but marco couldn't help but choke out a laugh too.

"Fine fine...he beat me...guess there is someone out there who can beat the master...", Tom bumped him playfully, egging him on, "C'mon...let's do another round...maybe we can swap with star every game so we all get to play? Don't wanna leave anyone out right?". Tom was way too nice considering how Star had been to him before this point, but Star took him up on his proposition, marco watching as they faced off, then he and star again, then back to him and tom.

And Star looking between the boys as they teased each other over and over.

It was almost like...normal, as if there never had been any weird conflict at all.

They had subs that night, munching them down together, laughing and smiling. Tom and Star actually kinda talking to each other, nicely, about school and other things. Marco felt so much relief that he never knew he needed so badly. His best friends...were now becoming friends for real, they were talking and smiling and laughing. When he thought about it, while looking at them, they looked like a pretty good couple. Maybe the sorta date with jackie might work out better then he thought.

Maybe if tom could work with star, he really could work with jackie.

Maybe.

Though as star and tom parted from his house that night, he felt a little sad, tom promising to come over tomorrow as well.

And marco watched him go inside his home, till tomorrow.

And the thought of that alone provided him nice dreams.

My Lazy, Poor, Stupid Person’s Attempt to Paint Tabletop Miniatures

This has nothing to do with covid-19 really, it’s just something I reckoned I’d share.  For several years I’ve played Dungeons & Dragons, and occasionally others like Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green, or Shadowrun. Though, I say ‘play’, when I mostly run games as a Dungeon Master. It’s one of those “hobbies” that is a lot of fun for someone like me, but requires a ton of dedication, so it isn’t always easy to get a dedicated group together.

Anyhow, I generally homebrew settings and adventures, never really been too big on running pre-written games, even if some of them are fantastically written. And one of the most frustrating things is I some times want to have a miniature on the battle grid that looks a certain way. This is hardly a big deal, since miniatures are just markers meant for reference in combat encounters, the real image of the characters is in all of our heads.

Still, I sometimes want to have something especially specific, a lot of the players in my current group appreciate cool looking miniatures, and seeing as I’m usually hard-up for cash, I can’t always buy pre-painted mini-figures, unless I get a good bulk deal on ebay or something.

One of my recent attempts to acquire bulk miniatures came a few years back when I realized during the 4E days, Wizards of the Coast had released boxed board games themed with the D&D style, which all came with a great deal of unpainted miniatures; these came in sets like Wrath of Ashardalon, or The Legend of Drizzt, with lots of themed minis for the board game’s scenario.

Anyhow, I’ve had a ton of these unpainted miniatures forever and use them often for nobody-NPCs and other characters the players run across. Lately, however, the group I’ve been running in a campaign for about eleven months (usually weekly), ran across a problem where their dragonborn ranger Grixxis was captured by and then negotiated his away out of the clutches of this ancient entity who calls herself Gorgoth (who appears to be a pale, beautiful young woman, but probably isn’t; even the not so arcane-y Grixxis intuited that much). She was actually impressed that he resisted her Sleep spell, and offered him a deal, she’d let him go but he needs to complete a task for her in the next seven days, and if it isn’t completed in that time frame his soul will be bound to her forever.

The task was to go to a mountaintop and retrieve something that resides there, though Gorgoth did not explain what the object was, so the party set off to find this mysterious mountain. The journey led them to an area of bad wilderness where no one lives, and where roving bands of orcs constantly hunt and war with one another, so only a few people know anything about that region. The party ended up hiring a guide, who was a wood elf exile named Skaya. They seemed to be intrigued by her because she’s living in a city which is currently at war with wood elves, so there’s a lot of prejudice and racism against her kind. Skaya does have facial tattoos that indicate she’s been exiled from her tribe and therefore no longer truly considered by her people to be a wood elf (their worst form of punishment in this universe), but still, the party seemed immediately fascinated by this single NPC among the potential seven or so they might’ve hired for this expedition.

Anyhow, my players have only gotten truly invested in one other NPC they’ve met before this; a small little orc toddler named Gruuba who they saved from a bunch of slave trading bandits early on in the campaign. I’ve had difficulty finding a good miniature for Gruuba too (because she’s really small and scrawny), but since she’s at the same developmental level as a human six year-old they try to keep her out of combat scenarios (despite Gruuba’s excited insistence that she enjoys using clubs “for smashings”). Since the party have begun to really enjoy Skaya as character, the longer they’ve slowly, slowly gotten to know more about her stand-offish personal history, I really wanted to get a miniature for her that reflected my image of her better than the one I’d been using.

So, even though I got basically no experience doing so, I bought a miniature from Reaper Miniatures, and after looking up a few tutorial vids for beginners like me, I set about trying to paint my first mini-figs.

Two things, if you’re looking into this yourself; First, I’m not totally unartistic, I write creatively and I sketch with pencils and ink. Painting’s fairly new to me, but it’s not like I have absolutely no artistic talent. I also solder a lot of really small wires and components in my normal daily job, so I may have better muscle control for this sort of thing than some people. I only mention this because I may have had a few advantages in this undertaking. I just don’t want to make people overly confident, keep things in perspective. So whatever your level of expertise at this, if you want to start just try to patiently measure your expectations, and don’t get discouraged if your first results aren’t so great. All things improve with time.

 And B. if you’re poor, lazy, and stupid like me, there’re ways to get around that. This video I watched gave me a good rundown of the basic steps which are; - scrub the plastic down with some dish soap, luke-warm water, and a toothbrush; allow at least 1 hour to dry (I let them sit for a day because I’m paranoid), and be sure there’s no lingering moisture before you start painting - get a good primer or base coat on the model before you start adding other colors; lighter base coats allow more colors to show up easier, while darker base coats tend to make the colors you paint over them darker - stay calm and take your time - try to paint the colors that’ll go under other colors first, like, if a barbarian dude is shirtless but’s wearing a few pieces of armor, paint his shirtless skin first, then paint the armor he’s wearing second because it layers over better that way - use thinner paints and multiple coats of a color to get an even final color instead of one thick coat - allow each coat of paint to dry for 10 - 20 minutes before applying the next coat - learn about washes, pigments, and inks, because they’re awesome - get a decent varnish for a final protective coat, matte varnishes make the model look dryer and flat, gloss varnishes make the model look shiny and wet, if you do a coat of gloss and a coat of matte varnish it equalizes it pretty good

And this video here sort of laid to rest my fears that I’ll need to spend $600 on paints and washes and stuff. The very helpful lady in that video explains how she uses generic acrylic paints from the craft store (I got mine at Wal-Mart) to paint her Warhammer miniatures, and she even offers a method of making your own washes from a combination of paint and flavorless mouth wash. It’s genius. So try not to stress too much about buying the really nice brand name paints, because it’s not necessary, those paints just have an optimal mix I think, otherwise they’re the same damn thing as generic acrylic paints. Also, you’re just trying to learn, so unless you really, really feel like emptying your bank account, just use the generic stuff.

I started out painting something I didn’t care about. I wanted my miniature for Skaya to look badass and awesome, so I wanted to start with some practice miniatures. Grabbed a few from those 4E board game sets and gave it a shot. But I had also recently gotten hold of a Goliath Barbarian miniature from the Player’s Handbook Heroes sets (also from the 4E days) a rare find, since it usually goes for like $60.00 by itself. Randomly found some dude on ebay selling an unopened box set for $20.00, so I got a wild elf druid and a human berserker along with it. So I started out touching up the goliath’s armor to make it look more like armor and less like weird blue stuff.

Here’s a before-and-after for him (I didn’t take photos of them before because I wasn’t anticipating this, so I just found examples from around the web):

Next I tried a re-paint. A friend of mine had recently guest-played in my campaign and created a half-drow monk (his backstory was fantastic), so since nothing like that exists, I took a Soulknife Infiltrator miniature seen here:

And repainted it to sort of look like his half-drow Monk of the Open Palm:

I finally had the courage to do a full paint, so I grabbed the Dragonborn Elementalist from the Wrath of Ashardalon box, and painted her up with reddish scales (I’m one of those who thinks dragonborn should have physical attributes of their heritage).

In the box her name’s Heskan. I definitely used way too much wash on this one so she looks super shiny.

I then took the orc archers in that same box, and not really paying too much attention this time, quickly painted them, because I lack many orc archers:

At this point, I felt it was time to finally paint Skaya, the wood elf exile. I used the Reaper Bones model Deladrin, Female Assassin ($1.99) for Skaya’s mini.

And taking way more hours than I did on the others, which were only about 1-3 hours each, when you count waiting for the coats to dry, I managed to sort of make her look like Skaya, I guess:

After this, the fact that it wasn’t complete and utter shit, which is what I expected, I was encouraged. So I tried to do out party’s tortle cleric, named Daruuk of Chult (who oddly speaks with a Slavic accent, so that’s how people from Chult sound in our campaign), for whom we’ve lacked an accurate mini-figure for some time. I bought a pack of Spikeshell Warriors ($2.99) from the Reaper Bones line.

But Daruuk characteristically wields a large shield and a warhammer, so for some reason I got super detailed and bought a pack of loose shields from the Reaper Bones line ($0.99), then bought Halbarad ($1.49) a human cleric.

I clipped off Halbarad’s hammer at the hilt, then I trimmed the spikes off of the spikeshell warrior’s club, and used a dremel to carfully mill a hole inside the shaft of the spikeshell’s club, then pinned the hammer inside and secured it with gorilla gel. I used an actual cork board pin to push the shield onto the spikshell’s offhand after cutting off his turtle shell shield in order to pin it before gluing, then clipped off the rest of the cork board pin. Somehow, this ended up making the shield look meaner because it now has a like pyramidal spike sticking out the center. After allowing the glue to dry I painted him up, and my attempt at Daruuk the Death Cleric turned out thus:

I guess his hammer looks sort of Acme-level cartoony, but he’s a giant 350 lb. turtle-man who talks like Omega Red from X-Men The Animated Series, so I’m okay with that. The spikeshell also fits well with the razorback sub-race feature I allowed Daruuk’s player to homebrew for himself. I was really proud of this one.

Finally, because I’m an insane asshole who is getting obsessed with my new hobby, I decided it was dragons or bust. So I bought a pre-primed unpainted Young Blue Dragon from WizKids ($13.99).

And spent, like, three days meticulously testing different paint layers to see how they come out. I tried to paint her in the tradition of blue dragons as they appear in the art of Forgotten Realms material, but gave her a somewhat darker cast, and added metallic blue layers to her claws and spinal ridges. I still need to paint her base, put some highlights on her eyes to accentuate the glowing effect and add my washes to give her a final layer of dimension, but here’s how she came out so far:

Anyhow.

This is super long and I wonder if anyone will bother to read any of it. But just wanted to put this out there. From a dude who, if you asked me a year ago if I thought I could do this, I’d have said I’m too stupid, poor, and lazy. I still think of myself as all of those things. The real pros use crazy detailed techniques with like seven layered highlights on their models, and airbrushes and all kinds of other madness. I use maybe three coats total and I don’t get too worked up if I make a mistake here and there, and I haven’t spent more than maybe fifty bucks total across six weeks, and most of that was wasting paints because I was still learning how to mix different shades. 

So if you got something you feel like you’ve always wanted to do but are too stupid, poor, and lazy to figure out, just go for it yo. I managed to crack out these bastards and I still think I suck, but it’s way better looking than I expected. For real though, you should see some of those Warhammer players, they got mad crazy god skills at this stuff compared to me. But your level of skill isn’t the point. The point is to have that moment with that thing you did, and look at it, and just go “Yeh, I did that” when at one time you never believed you ever could.

There’s always going to be somebody better than you, but even they, like all of us, are still learning.

I’ve added the mortician career mod amongst the best career mods in the Sims 4 because it’s so unique and probably unthinkable to become a mortician in such a fun game.

I mean, we know EA/Maxis would never add this. So I’m really happy with this mod’s ingenuity.

10. Oceanography

The ocean. The strangest place that the Earth has to offer, and same goes for our friendly sims fellows too.

We’ve managed to discover some of its mysteries with the latest Island Living expansion pack, but there are still many things that lie at the bottom of the ocean waiting to be discovered.

Well now you can have your sim study the oceanic landscape and become a prolific scientist with this free oceanography career mod!

This is one those careers that you probably didn’t know you wanted in the game until you saw it. And while it hasn’t appeared much in older titles, now you have the chance to try it out.

9. Psychologist

The strain of being a psychologist takes a toll on most sims. And it’s only natural for them to come home feeling tense(basically a therapist with a doctorate).

Even though this mod only adds one deep career path, there are 4 branches that you can choose to follow as a doctor with this mod.

These 4 specialties are dermatologist, cardiologist, plastic surgeon, or a pediatrician. Some pretty varied options that I think add a lot of creativity into the mix.

5. Singer

Being a musician is incredibly fun. Getting on stage, touring, what’s not to love?

That said… why is there a singing skill if your sim can’t become a singer?! It makes no sense!

This mod fixes that – and boy does it make the game feel far more complete.

With a singer career you can live the dream of becoming the next big thing in the musical world without having to pick up a guitar to do it – although that would definitely help so don’t shy away from the instruments.

Divinity Original Sin 2: Close to Perfection

I’ve played well over 70 hours of this game and kept putting off writing a review of it because I keep learning more about it and felt like my review could NEVER possibly cover all that this game has to offer. And you know what? I was right. It can’t. But it doesn’t have to. All I need to do is tell you enough about this game to make you want to try it, or at least check it out on youtube. 

Some might call Divinity Original Sin 2 the holy grail of RPGs. Or maybe that’s just me. But this game has gotten A LOT of positive attention. It got game of the month in the Game Informer magazine just recently. A lot of youtuber’s have been singing it’s praises. Sometimes a lot of hype over a game ends up leaving you feeling cheated, like there was just TOO much positivity and excitement and pomp and circumstance surrounding it that by the time you get to the game you’re like, “Meh”. I don’t think that’s going to happen to you with this game. I was introduced to it by a fellow gamer I hold close to my gamer heart (MFPallyTime). OK so I don’t know him personally but I wish I did he seems wicked nice and cool and his build videos for Heroes of the Storm are great. Anyways, he was playing Divinity Original Sin 2 on Twitch and I just happened to poke on over to his channel out of curiosity. This game looked so intriguing within 10 minutes of watching him play that I went to the steam page for it and started reading reviews. I bought it about 15 minutes later. 

This game just has so much to offer, especially for the mega geeks like me who enjoy things like D&D. Actually a lot of the game systems are loosely based on D&D, so a background in that or relevant games (like Baldur’s Gate) certainly helps you get started. But not to worry--you do not need any background to figure it out, it just takes longer, and youtube videos help. I tried Baldur’s Gate and couldn’t get past the tutorial because I was so confused (this coming from someone who plays D&D recreationally). This game makes more sense. 

So here’s a rundown. You can either make your own character or play one of the 6 available. Everyone recommends for your first time playing one of the “origin” characters because you get more out of the story that way. I have to agree with this, and the story is worth knowing. There are 4 races to choose from: Human, Elf, Dwarf, and Lizard (you can also play an Undead version of any of these races). Each race has a few unique things about them, making them better suited for particular classes (I will not be getting into the nitty gritty of that, it is better explained in lengthy youtube class building videos). There are 14 classes to choose from, revolving around the presets all gamers are used to (warrior, rogue, mage, ranger). The great thing is though that this class you start with is subject to tinkering (you can change your attribute point and skill presets right away) and later on you’ll get access to a very cool tool that will allow you to go back (over and over again) to change all your point distributions. So you’re not stuck playing exactly what you start with. In fact, I recommend that you don’t. Taylor it to either what you want or if you’re not sure look up builds on youtube. There are TONS of them. 

The general story (without spoiling anything) is that you are a Sourcerer (a person who wields the power of Source, or Magic) and because of that you’re considered dangerous. Something has gone terribly wrong in the world, and use of Source is causing awful creatures (called Voidwoken) to sprout up all over the place, causing mass death and chaos. There’s a cure for being a Sourcerer, but I bet you can guess it’s not a nice one. So you’ll spend part of your time in this game as a prisoner, and you can be damn sure there will be a lot of people on the look out for your kind. You’re not just a Sourcerer though, you’re even more than that, something very special, but we’re getting into spoiler territory, so you’ll have to find out what you are in game (or by watching lets play videos, you cheater). You will be able to play with up to 3 other characters (either AI controlled or controlled by real people...or your dog, if you want to great really creative). I have been playing singleplayer and co-op and I personally enjoy co-op more, but you can DEFINITELY get all you need out of this game on your own. Having friends is NOT a prerequisite of this game. 

The characters you can play as (or with) are lush and interesting and it’s really a joy to get to know them and help them on their own journeys. I think it’s also great that you can potentially start up romantic relationships with them (or certain NPCs). I haven’t gotten there yet, but I heard you can even engage in “private affairs” with them later in the game. But whether you care about letting your character be easy or not is just a very tiny blot on the page. There is so much to do in this game that you can really stretch it past what most people are saying they’re finishing it in (70-80 hours I’ve been seeing). My advice is to try to do it all. You’re missing out if you don’t. And do more than one game! Try new approaches, try a new character, try a new team, try a new class, be nice in one game and a jerk in the other, have fun with it. 

One thing I have to say I really admire about this game is that EVERY NPC is voice acted. Everyone. Even the squirrels (you have to know how to talk to animals to communicate with them, its a talent you can get). And the voice acting is solid, more solid than most games I’ve played. It doesn’t sound belabored or fake, it all sounds appropriate. Now granted, graphics in a top-down RPG aren’t the most impressive, but they’re still pretty good, and they definitely don’t take away from the game. If you want to get more up close and personal, just zoom in. Although I recommend zooming back out for battles, otherwise you’re going to be super confused. Which brings me to another point: battling. I haven’t had this much fighting in a game since...actually I don’t think I ever have. I am not usually a big fan of turn based combat (despite playing games like Persona) but when a game does it this well, I’m in. Besides this game’s combat is WAY too complex to not be turn based. If you tried to do it real time you’d be dead in three seconds flat. Being turn based gives you as much time as you need to assess the situation, the environment, your positioning, the strengths and weaknesses of the enemies, if you should be focused on offense or defense, if you should attack or use your turn to buff your allies, if you should be retreating...you get the point. It’s a lot. And there are so many skills in this game to try out. Some of them are really powerful and just a delight to see go off on screen. On a side note, the music is pretty good too. Granted, I wish there was more to the soundtrack (more actual tracks I mean) but what they do use is done very well. It sounds authentic. But they let you choose from 4 instruments while creating your character for the “lead instrument” in the songs that will be played, and that is pretty cool. 

There is so much to this game I’d love to go on and on about it, but that’s probably not what people want out of written reviews anymore. That’s more for youtube videos nowadays. If you DO want more on this game in the written word versus video, please let me know. I would be happy to indulge if the interest is there. But that aside, please check this game out! It is too good to miss. It is by far one of the best games I’ve ever played. And if you’re a D&D fan, or are interested in D&D but too intimidated by its complexities, this is a great place to start.

Whether you’re looking to begin coding as a hobby, a new career, or just to enhance your current role, the first thing you’ll have to do is decide which programming language you want to start with.

There is no right answer, of course. Choosing a first language will depend on what kind of projects you want to work on, who you want to work for, or how easy you want it to be. Hopefully, this guide will help give you a better idea of which one you should pursue.

Python Python is always recommended if you’re looking for an easy and even fun programming language to learn first. Rather than having to jump into strict syntax rules, Python reads like English and is simple to understand for someone who’s new to programming. This allows you to obtain a basic knowledge of coding practices without having to obsess over smaller details that are often important in other languages.

Python also is ideal for web development, graphic user interfaces (GUIs), and software development. In fact, it was used to build Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify, so it’s clearly in demand among employers in addition to having a faster onboarding.

Though it has it’s advantages, Python is often thought of as a slow language that requires more testing and is not as practical for developing mobile apps as other languages.

C# While C is one of the more difficult languages to learn, it’s still an excellent first language pick up because almost all programming languages are implemented in it. This means that once you learn C, it’ll be simple to learn more languages like C++ and C#.

In this way, C is an exceptional choice to become a master coder and a talented developer from the get-go if you’re willing to take on the challenge.

Java Java is an object-oriented and feature-heavy programming language that’s in high demand. It’s been built under the premise of “Write once, run anywhere,” meaning that it can be written on any device and work cross-platform.

This makes it one of the most desired (yes, we mean high-paid) language skills. So, if you’re looking to learn a language that’s going to get you a great career, this might be the one, especially since top employers for Java programmers including Ebay, Amazon, and IBM.

Additionally, Java is often used for Android and iOS app development, as it’s the basis of the Android operating system, which makes it one of the best choices if you want to build mobile apps.

While it may not be as easy to pick up as Python, Java is a high-level language, and so it’s still relatively beginner-friendly. However, it has a slow startup and will take beginners much longer to deploy their first project.

JavaScript JavaScript is another incredibly popular language. Many websites that you use every day rely on JavaScript including Twitter, Gmail, Spotify, Facebook, and Instagram according to General Assembly.

Additionally, it’s a must-have when adding interactivity to websites because it communicates with HTML and CSS. This makes it essential for front-end development and consumer-facing websites while becoming increasingly important in back-end development and growing in demand all the time. Because of its popularity, JavaScript is also the leading the charge in test automation frameworks, being the backbone of frameworks like Protractor and Nightwatch.JS.

There’s nothing to install with JavaScript since it’s already built into browsers, so it’s the easiest language to get started with in terms of set-up. The con here is that this means it’s interpreted differently across browsers (you’ll need to do some extra cross-browser testing) and may have deficiencies in responsive design compared to server-side scripts.

Again, while it’s not the most difficult to learn, it certainly isn’t as easy as Python. If Javascript does seem difficult at first, try out this Javascript tutorial that’s so easy a cat could do it.

Ruby Ruby is similar to Python in that it’s one of the easiest languages for people with no prior programming experience to read. You don’t need to know a ton of commands or programming vocabulary to learn it, and it has a multitude of libraries and tools that come in handy.

A big reason people like Ruby is because of the awesome full-stack framework, Ruby on Rails, which is becoming increasingly popular among startups and enterprise solutions. Airbnb, Groupon, Hulu, and Soundcloud are just a few of the websites that were built with Ruby on Rails, and Ruby has quite the active developer community today.

The reason it’s so popular for small businesses, however, is often one of the many criticisms against it. Ruby can have the challenge of scalability across a large system and may have a hard time with performance on larger websites. Additionally, while Ruby is certainly easy to learn, you’ll find most of the opportunities come from learning Ruby on Rails, which may slow down your learning curve if you were just expecting to take the easy way out to create a website.

So, What’s the Best Programming Language to Learn? If you’re looking for something easy: Python If you want a solid foundation to make you a master developer: C If you’re looking for a job or want to make mobile apps: Java If you want to try front-end development: Javascript If you’re programming for your startup’s website: Ruby While there may be a strategy to choosing, Roger Collier emphasizes that programming is hard no matter what you pick (even with Python). It’ll be frustrating to get started, and moreover, become really good at it. However, he also suggests that this affinity for taking on the challenge to learn a skill that others may not have the patience for is what inherently makes coders so unique.

In his own words, Collier — a Javascript enthusiast — asserts  “Learning programming is hard, and that’s why I like it.”

Especially for testers, as the QA industry begins to increasingly require skills in test automation, programming knowledge becomes an invaluable asset. In “Coding is key to a test automation career: Are you prepared?” T.J. Maher advances that learning to code is the number one way to break into test automation. Then, even after you think you understand it, you need to continue practicing all the time.

“The most important thing is not to stop practicing to code once you’re hired as a test automation engineer,” said Maher. “Learning is a never-ending journey.”

Additionally, no matter what language you choose, you’d be well advised not to stop after your first language — the best programmers have a combination under their belt. After you learn one, the rest will likely be easier to pick up.

what if the software/web/app developed with C language or any other language, then will it be a compulsory for guy to have knowledge of all programming languages or one will work to test that program. and if one will work then suppose the program is build on java then ow will it be possible for tester to test the program because he doesn’t know the programming language on which program was developed.

i think when choosing a programming language, it’s just as important to check how much you could potentially earn now and in the future. I learned a long time ago I love to program, it does not mater what language I use. So I follow the money so I can have a secure future.

I’ve used many websites in the past but I find inforgraphics such as the following very helpful in making a financial programming decision.

Cathedral Tower Defense Game character ideas and stuff so far! I’ve talked about some of these before but I wanna just compile it in summary form, and try and get thinking about more to add. It’d be so cool if I could make it like an early suikoden game where you have the world’s biggest party selection! Or at least have that equivelant but with recruiting shopkeepers and townbuilders and stuff.

So... long post ahoy!

* Protagonist (Sir/Lady/Master Amity) Your selectable renameable main charrie! A badass disabled veteran who lost their family in the war and ended up defending this cathedral town of strangers in order to prevent another tragedy. They’re generally distrusted at the beginning, have a lot of doubts about what philosophy they should take in life, and its up to you to decide how the story plays out. But no matter what, this protagonist is a cool grumpy comically-serious nerd gramp! (or gran or etc) i really REALLY like the idea of changing them to be an older veteran character, it just works so much better and seriously WHY are there like zero grandma protagonists in anything ever? I will vow to make this one as amazing as possible!!

* Florin Generally supportive yet sassy and lazy deutorogonist helper guy. He’s your first ally in this world and maybe kind of a tutorial, lol. Even though he’s a total cinnamon roll, he’s as distrusted as you because he’s a demon. Even the protagonist kinda wonders why on earth he wants to help them, and whether he’s some sort of enemy spy... His elemental realm is over plants, and he has no greater joy than taking a nice nap amoungst the flowers~

* Malachi At the moment the only fully developed idea I have for another party member, aside from Florin. Though I’m not sure if I want him to be optional or mandatory? In either case when you recruit him he’s the catylyst for a lot of character development for Florin, and they end up becoming like a lil adopted family ^_^ Anyway, Mal is a very young and adorable demon child that the party finds sealed away beneath some ruins. Precociously innocent, he seems unaware that he’s become a monster. I mean, everyone eats rocks, right?

* Admiral Chiffon (wip name) A major recurring enemy turned ally! Chiffon starts off as just the eccentric comic relief member of the opposing army, kinda harmless and kinda entertaining. And you might pity her quite a bit, because her coworkers treat her like absolute shit. I basically invented this character because I got sick of seeing the ‘ha ha flambouyant gross comic relief villain’ thing in recent fire emblems, and wondered what it would be like to have a villain whose LGBTQ status is treated as a sympathising aspect instead, leading to a redemption when she finds people who dont treat her like those damn writers treated everyone :P So yeah, she’s a transgender woman who faces a lot of predjudice in her career, and I hope I can make it very heartwarming when she finds true friendship with our heroes! And also I hope it can make the non-comic-relief villains seem extra disgustingly unforgiveable after you see how badly they treat their own teammates. Her personality is gonna be kind of a greedy merchant sort of person, but what if that archetype was a good character instead. She remains sassy and greedy even when she’s been redeemed, i like a good ‘ol vice-filled hero yknow! Character development is my jam! Also all i know about her design so far is that I think I want her to have stylishly skunk striped hair, to represent greying streaks and all. I was imagining her as the token grandma of the cast before I decided to age up the protagonist lol

* Currently unnamed church matron duo, aka Timon And Pumbaa One of my early-ish undeveloped concepts for non-battling town members. These two are florin’s equivelant, they’re the town workers you start off with before the game really starts. I’m thinking they’d be like nuns/priestesses that worked at this place before you came along, and you have a bit of a rivalry here because they pragmatically know they need you to defend the stronghold but they’re also very wary of you. The ‘timon’ one would be the main one who actually holds all these opinions, a sort of crusty matronly mega paranoid lady who thinks you’re gonna backstab us all at any moment! And she’s some sort of super scary chronic sufferer of resting bitch face, even though she sees herself as the ultimate arbiter of justice everyone else thinks she’s terrifying. Just imagine her trying to hug a baby that just cries as if it saw the face of death! Life sucks when you’re a lawful good character stuck in a chaotic evil character design! And then her partner is a funloving pumbaa-esque team chef, who’s actually kinda too loving and innocent to ever distrust anyone. But she always just falls in with whatever her boss says, its like a pinky and the brain situation. Oh and I’m already kinda preemptively shipping these two before I’ve even finished designing them XD

* Depression jail janitor Starts as a prisoner you take from one of the enemy raids, but he ends up winning your trust and joining your team. Entirely against his will! he’s a chronically depressed man who was forcibly drafted into the evil army even though he doesnt believe in their cause, but now he feels like he’s unforgiveable anyway. So he spends all his time trying to convince you that he is indeed pure evil! But the more humble he is, the more everyone believes in his genuine kindness. Alas! It doesnt help that he also kinda has chronic hero syndrome and cant resist helping out in every possible way. So that is how a prisoner ended up becoming the one in charge of the jail keys! And he’s like Everyone’s Dad. (Even the people decades older than him...)

* Former bully powerful friend The one other main child character, cos I wanted Malachi to have some friends. They start off at odds and she initially joins in with everyone bullying him, cos she wants to fit in. But he ends up helping her deal with her insecurities and realise she was only resenting him for being ‘weak’ because she saw herself reflected in him. or rather, the traits in herself she’d tried to hide to make everyone like her, even if it meant joining in with bullying and only having horrible asshole friends. So she sacrifices her popularity with the main clique in order to defend malachi, and ends up finding her first true friend with him. They’re better off being outcasts together! So yeah cutie malachi will have some sort of stronge deliquent friend with a heart of gold, and I’m not sure yet whether she’d be playable or not? i kinda feel like its not right to have someone that young join the party unless they have magic powers to protect them. So maybe she can fight by teaming up with malachi, actually? like, she rides atop his stone dragon golem form and supports with ranged weaponry or something. or just acts as an advisor? I liked the idea I had that there would be a buffs-only type of magic stone, and people could cast it on themselves to have enhanced senses at something or other and improve their supporting skills. Like the protagonist would maybe have an eyesight-enhancing buff crystal to act as a sniper scope!

* Rival warrior buff teen person Very undeveloped cos I just came up with them ysterday, lol! I’m thinking possibly make this character female just cos this archetype doesnt get to be female all that often. Kind of a draco malfoy type snooty rival, but with a more sympathetic side and ultimately you do become friends. Theyre just a simple ordinary citizen who was doing the best they could to protect their family before you came along, and now kinda resents the fact you’re all BETTER THAN EVERYONE and taking their job as guardian! They have a lot of anxieties over the fact they struggled so hard to become self-trained and now you’re here making it look easy. So the plot has a general theme of believing too much in ‘destiny’, and that some people are just born with talent and you’ll never succeed if you werent lucky enough. This character started off trying to act like theyre inherantly blessed with that talent, because they’re terrified that they aren’t... Oh and I think once you befriend them I think they might be like a ryuuji/junpei type of friend? But without the weird sexism and homophobia randomness that persona 4 threw onto yosuke. Just like a bit of a cheerful cliche ‘bro’ who isnt all that interested in books and likes to be all ‘cmon do it for the vine’. A good polar opposite to the protagonist who could have some cute interactions!

* Rival warrior’s chilled out older sibling figure of reasonableness Every rin needs a yukio! I think they’d be maybe a bartender or owner of a restaurant or something? Just some sort of super chilled out job where they act as an agony aunt to their customers, the place is very popular because of the great service. (Though also everyone is kinda like ‘yo you dont have to run it all by yourself, yo you dont need to give us bonus extra special treatment, seriously get some sleep dude!!’) But anyway they’re this perpetually relaxed super kind soul who’s always the reasonable response to their lil sib’s ohohoho angry rivalness. But the bad side to it is that they’re also a lil depressed and apathetic about their own life, they’re kinda like someone who really lives for their family, in a bad way. They’ve been like a single parent to their sibling because they had kind of a tragic backstory, and big sib has just grown too used to sacrificing everything in order to help other people and never taking care of themself. And they have a lot of trouble even.. feeling emotions. The outwardly chilled and happy-go-lucky facade covers up just a void of nothing but self hate and emptiness. They feel like they’d already been tainted by the way their abusive parents used to treat them, its too late for them and all they can do is try and save other people from falling down the same path. Oh, and I think maybe the two siblings are actually immigrants from the villain country? Like, when older sib ran away from the abusive family they ended up here, and now they try and keep it secret, to the point that even the younger sibling doesnt know where they were born. Basically I just wanna have a LOT of different subplots showing how the ordinary citizens of this country aren’t all evil just because their government are the bad guys in this story. And especially covering topics like characters who’re part of that ethnicity and get treated like they’re inherantly terrorists even if they were born and raised in a completely different country!

Guest Blog: Travel Photographer and Filmmaker Serge Ramelli

From Paris to Hollywood

Ever since I was a teenager I dreamed of being an artist, an actor, a director or just being involved in making movies.

As a teenager I remember seeing Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and this totally changed my life. Not so much by the quality of movie, which I loved (I went to see it three times in the theater the first week of its release), but by the impact it created around me. Everyone at school was only talking about the movie, and I realized that a movie could have a huge impact on culture and society at large.

This dream kind of faded away as I grew up. I became a father early in life, and I got a job coding. But sitting at a desk was not a life for me, although I loved computers. I then got into sales for the travel industry, first selling sightseeing tours in Paris and later on working for my brother’s company selling websites to hotels.

In 2004 at the age 34 years old, I had four kids to take care of and lots of financial responsibilities. I was doing ok, but I started being obsessed again about working in movies. I decided to go back to acting class and to create some short movies to tackle the world of entertainment. Back then there was no DSLR that could shoot movies. To get anything decent you had to rent very expensive cameras that did not even have nice bokeh or depth of field and did not look like cinema at all.

All my efforts came out to nothing; my shorts were horrible and not finished, and the acting classes were not doing well. I felt like I would never make it.

As I was about to give up, I went on vacation with a whole bunch of friends in Guadeloupe. I had a small Sony point and shoot camera and started for the first time in my life to shoot digital photos. They were just snapshots of our holiday.

One night we were a little bored, nothing good on tv. One of my friends present, Kelvin Pimont asked me if I wanted to see what Photoshop could do. I had heard about the software but never saw it in action. Kelvin was a young designer who was a master Jedi at the software.

He starts showing how to select the sky and make it super dramatic, how to erase all the tourist around a portrait we had taken together and I couldn’t believe how powerful and how ‘easy’ the software seemed to be.

That day I had a major epiphany that would change my life forever.

Until I could figure out how to make movies, I could at least create art with photography and make my photo sublime with the help of this magical Photoshop software!

When we came back home, I went into the biggest technical library in Paris (Eyrolles) and looked for all the books I could find on Photography and Photoshop. After buying a large number of really hard to understand books, I found a Photoshop book by Scott Kelby. Finally something I could understand.

I then started a project that went on for 5 years, taking dramatic photos of Paris after work in the most dramatic light possible. I would then watch tutorials on post processing and using Photoshop, and then later on Lightroom, I was able to make the photos even more dramatic!

This was a blast and my life made sense again. When I became 38 in 2008, I started doing interior design photography as I did a photo shoot in a hotel in Paris (in HDR) with the Seven Hotel. The hotel belonged to a hotel celebrity by the name of Philippe Vaurs.

Philippe was blown away by the photos. At the time there was very little retouching in interior design photography and most photographer were shooting on film. I added some subtle light effects in Lightroom that seemed to hit home

He started promoting my work to many hotel managers/owners and I started getting lots of job inquiries. So much that a few months later, I resigned from my VP of Sales duty to being a full time photographer. 

This was a very scary decision for me, especially with four young kids to take care of. I made a lot less money but I was finally doing something that I loved.

My desire to make movies started coming back. When the Canon 5D Mark II came out, I decided to make a short action movie with it. Like everybody, I had seen Reverie from Vincent Laforet and was amazed by the cinema look we could get with it.

This movie is called Arthur, and it came out in 2010. A parkour action movie with a young friend named Arthur. He goes to school and sees a girl in trouble and will use some of his parkour power to save the day. The short was nominated in 4 festivals and won the public prize at Arles.

I had no idea how much luck this movie was going to change my life, but more on this later.

I then started teaching photography; post processing in French on the web site Tuto.com and later in English on YouTube.

This became an immediate success. I became the second best author on Tuto and my YouTube channel became the most viewed on Lightroom.

After doing the parkour short, I started working for one the largest galleries in Paris called Yellow Korner and got an amazing deal with a German publisher named teNeues. Six years of taking over 100,000 photos of Paris starting paying off

They wanted me to take photos and make books on some of cities around the world. This happened at a perfect time. To be honest, at that time I started to get desperate financially, and my first couple of years as a photographer were very thin. I almost couldn’t pay my mortgage.

Over the next four years I did four coffee table books; Paris & New York in Black and White and Venice & Los Angeles in color

But the teaching on Tuto and the fine art deal saved the day! I was back at making enough money to have a comfortable life with my family.

In 2014, Kelvin, who had taught me Photoshop, relocated to Los Angeles and proposed me to move there with my family to pursue my goals of movie making. I could still do all my teaching from LA and travel the world for my galleries and publisher.

It took me a good year to move there and get an artist visa, but the 14th of October 2014, I moved to Los Angeles. Something I will never regret.

A few months after moving to LA, I became friend with a screenwriter by the name of Darius Stevens Wilhere. Darius had over 15 years of experience working on advertising, PSAs and documentaries.

I wrote a short movie called If Only. The story of a man desperately in love with a girl that he sees often and can never get the courage to talk to her, so he daydreams of being someone else to be able to meet her.

Darius helped me shoot this short. While doing this movie, which included a fight scene, he met Arthur, the young stunt man that I had worked with earlier, and he liked him a lot. His kids had seen my short movie with him several times. One day Darius tells me that he would like to write a full feature film. A noble action martial arts movie called, ‘Once Upon A Time In Paris.’ A few months later, he showed me the script and I loved it. I love movies where the hero is powerful and very noble like IP Man or some Bruce Lee movies. I also love martial arts.

The movie is very positive and full of cool action.

The next year Darius wrote another script and asked me to play the lead as an actor. The movie is called The Hollywouldn’ts. The story of a French men trying to make it in Hollywood with no visa and a lot of attitude.

I produced the movie with some friends and the help of Canon France who gave us all the equipment for free. They liked ‘If Only’ and wanted to help us.

After dreaming about making movies my entire life, I finally started something. A long wait.

Just for fun and for the photography community, we also did a short called Size Matters. A story of two photographers trying to seduce a girl by the size of their lens…

About 8 months ago something happened on YouTube that I didn’t expect. The short movie Arthur, that has been doing okay on youtube for seven years, blew up completely, getting 500,000 to 700,000 views per month. It has just passed 6M views in very little time.

At the same time, my good friend Darius told me that he was moving to Mexico for an offer he couldn’t refuse. This was very sad news for me as I really enjoyed working with him and was hoping we would find a way to make more movies together.

As he left, I asked him if he would be okay with me directing the movie he wrote, Once Upon A Time In Paris (the full feature action inspired by my short movie).

Darius was very happy and accepted and wished me the best of luck. A few weeks later in a complete random fashion, I met an amazing well-established Hollywood producer.

A young man of age 28 that already had produced 41 movies. He just helped produce Rob Cohen’s (Fast & Furious, Triple XXX) and Rob Reiner’s (A Few Good Men) latest movies.

I approached him first with the ‘Once Upon A Time In Paris’ script. He loved the project and decided to produce it and we are now in the process of casting the movie. I’m so exited to shoot an action movie in Paris.

I have also been working on another crazy project, a sci-fi movie. I have had the idea of the script for a long time. After years thinking about it, I decided to write the script with the encouragement of my wife.

I also had another crazy idea, which was to shoot a mock-up of the opening scene of the movie. Something that had to be spectacular enough to get a studio executive intrigued and wanting to know more.

I went to the border of Mexico in the Imperial Dunes to shoot this mock up, you can see the final result here:

To do all the special effects, I found an amazing 3D artist from Russia, Alex. You can see his Art Station page here and see how talented he is.

I showed this to the new producer and he was indeed intrigued. He asked to read the script and loved it. We are now working on some modification, but he wants to make it quickly.

Nothing done yet, but I find it amazing that by holding onto these crazy dreams, even at a later age that they could come through. I hope this encourages any artist out there to pursue their dreams. I cannot tell you how many times I though about giving up, or thinking I was not talented enough or not this or that. But there is something magical about pursuing one’s passion.
