I'm assuming you're talking about the livestream they did while on tour. so that was 2018. While this was around the time that d&p started to be more open with how they interacted with each other, keep in mind this was still a year before either of them even came out (though dan started being more open w/ his sexuality around 2016). Before that, it was like Platonic Bros over in danandphil land. In 2012/2013 dan would actively fight with shippers and tell everyone they were idiots for thinking him and phil were together 😭 but it was more than that, they also downplayed a lot of aspects of their relationship. phil went so far as to make up a lie that they met through a mutual friend, they would talk about needing gfs/why they didn’t have them. as far as im aware the first active denial of their relationship was in 2011

to give you more of a sense of what it was like: in 2015, on Oct 19th they were doing a liveshow and acknowledged that it was their “friendiversary” which was like groundbreaking (despite the fact that they were calling each other friends) bc I don’t think they’d ever acknowledged Oct 19th before. “Jesus Christ, I remember this…” Ellie said with a grin as she looked at one of the pictures in the photo album you were holding. You were both looking at pictures from your teenage years, specifically a picture you took with Ellie asleep on your shoulder while both Jesse and Dina drew on her face. This had become your grim reality—a cycle where beatings transformed from rare occurrences to nightly rituals upon Dan's return. He drained you of strength, providing the bare minimum sustenance required for survival, keeping you physically weak, your spirit tethered.

Days melted into one another, your existence confined to a bedridden state, waiting for Dan's return, awaiting his whims and desires. I think it’s safe enough to finally talk publicly about it.

Basically the vday video was a video Phil made for Dan for Valentine’s Day. He uploaded it privately onto his YouTube channel which Dan had the password to so Dan could see it. At this time, Dan was on vacation (pretty sure in India) and he wouldn’t have been able to see a video of that quality just through text or email. Shitty luck, the same time he privately uploaded it, infamous YouTube glitch happened where all private videos became public. And one of the videos that went public was the v day video.

There’s a lot of jokes about Dan in 2012, but it’s actually really depressing. Dan wasn’t out yet and he had a fuck ton of trauma surrounding his sexuality. 2012 is when dnp started blowing up enough to where they became part of popular early YouTube so people saved the v day video when it was uploaded.

They’ve only addressed it a few times in which they said it was an April Fool’s prank, which obviously doesn’t make sense, but what were they supposed to say? According to legend, people would keep reuploading the video and Phil would spend hours taking them down one by one and it would say “AmazingPhil took down this video for copyrite.”

It was a catalyst to just a really shitty period for dnp. All aggressively heterosexual clips from Dan’s liveshows are my 2012. “FYI I like vagina” is 2012. People were contacting his 14 year old brother to ask about him and Phil. That alone is both fucked up to drag a kid into this, but remember that Dan still wasn’t out to his family. It was probably so fucking terrifying when his YouTube life, especially regarding his sexuality and relationship, clashed with his family life for the first time.

There’s a noticeable difference between their relationship in videos from 2009-2011 and 2012-2015. And it is most likely because dnp blew up pretty big in 2012 and started going from making YouTube videos for fun to doing it as a job with the added pressure of millions watching. And the catalyst, or at least metaphorical catalyst, from the switch between being openly touchy feely giggles to strict, five feet apart mates is considered to be the vday vid.

It was a big problem in the phandom since it was leaked to around 2017ish. A lot of people were circulating it and word was that they were still being taken down years later, implying that Phil was still searching for the video years later.

The phandom used to be primarily 12-16 year olds. And when you’re that age, speaking from experience, you don’t understand the complexities of the situation and just kinda thought “teeheehee phan is real XD.” When in reality, it was a very sensitive and serious thing that wasn’t meant to ever be seen by the public. It’s literally where the cherry lube and kissing at the Manchester Eye reference is from.

Rightfully so, the video became more and more taboo to mention and most people caught on that it was a shitty thing to upload or share it. It used to be really taboo and affectionately was often referred to as “the video that shall not be named.”

It honestly has a backstory that is so story-like that it seems unreal. So much had to happen for it to be leaked and the impact it had on them was so large it’s like a black hole in phandom history.

It’s possible not all of this is accurate, this is just the basic lore of it. So while I don’t think the internet police will drag you to prison for saying you watched the vday video, this is the context behind it. Do with it what you will.

decided i'm not doing enough dan and phil shit with my life already (lol) so i set up a dnp tumblr community cause i think it can become a cool feature and i want to partake in beta testing it

right now you can't request to join a community i have to like manually invite everyone (kms) and the member limit is 500 (though if we hit that we can request to have the limit upped) but i might set up a google form or something for people to submit their username if they want to join, i feel like that might be the easiest way of making sure i don't miss anyone

communities also need like mods and shit, and i think you can have more than one admin? i'm not sure yet i'm still looking into all this. but i think it can be a good solution to the eternal tumblr problem of 'oh my god getting to know people on here is a nightmare'. i see a lot of people on other platforms who want to join the tumblr phandom but they just don't know how to get into the community cause as much as i adore this website it's just not well built for that as of now. we'll see how it goes! i think it'll be fun :3

Like would the protag have accepted, or had to have some time to think about it. Would the protag be more or less willing to move in with him. Also, would the Astral express ever tell the protag about Dan Heng's feelings, or do they respect his privacy that much. Would Kafka get in the way, or would she let things happen, however that goes.

Speaking of that Dan Heng fic I was actually reading it today to just deconstruct how I write... crazy.. Honestly it would've absolutely gone his way had he confessed; when I tend to write an MC I usually lean to a somewhat blunt personality (that occasionally comes of as quite crude), so MC is someone who values communication. Alas, Dan Heng is nothing of the sort... alas. Sorrows and prayers. You're right, I did try to hint at MC's jealousy when thinking of Dan Heng pulling someone else into that closet, because both of them were sort of tiptoeing into 'feelings' territory. Dan Heng knew but was in verbose denial; MC just felt irritated about it and likely just blamed it on the drinks lmao.

Anyways with both the Dan Heng and Blade series, their lack of voicing how they feel about something makes them both veryyy entertaining to write for. Like quiet, simmering jealousy? Elite. MC's also written to be quite an intense and adaptable character to complement theirs, which is also why he doesn't mind being fwbs with both. (WENCH!!! VILLAGE WENCH!)

But again, the MCs I write tend to value dialogue more, while also brushing off any advances of characters. Therefore any feelings he had for either would've been pushed down subconsciously since both Dan Heng and Blade are SHIT at having heart to hearts.

Genuinely, in terms of a relationship, whoever confessed first would've had a better chance. Like MC has chemistry with both of them so it would've been quite easy to form a relationship with either, or at least I hope it reads that way. Yes, MC would've moved in with Dan Heng 100% (even in that one blade one he was READY to jump ship lmao).

And Kafka... she's just there for the entertainment tbh; that one section where I included her just terrorising Dan Heng by being all touchy with MC... lmao she's fully using the best friend privileges just to kick this emotionally constipated doofus into action

But honestly, she's rooting for Blade 100%. phil says they’re trying to decide if his phone colour is a girly kind of purple and dan says manly purple and then says something like it’s fuchsia and you know what fuchsia means

that moment always stuck out to me as an example of not wanting to come across ‘girly’ or ‘less manly’. which i think phil always seemed a bit at peace with,, like he’s talked a lot about the cordless hammer drill thing (?) and becoming ‘manly’ but kind of just laughed off that that isn’t him. whereas dan especially 2012 time really tried anything to not be seen as girly or stereotypically gay. it’s also such a small thing to care about,,,, literally just your phone case,, but it came across as a bit of a big deal because it seemed ‘feminine’

also to add like you said i’m not blaming either of them bc it literally just stems from homophobia and a lot of homophobia relates back to not wanting to be seen as feminine or girly. its refreshing to see both of them way more comfortable than they were,,,, especially dan who has hinted at actually Not being stereotypically masculine at all in how he dresses or looks. it must be such a weight off of them both to be able to act how they want now

ohh for sure, i would file that under the category of emphasizing phil's lack of traditional masculinity. like you said, phil never seemed to have a problem with that aspect of himself, and in the beginning dan didn't either. i actually think it's one of the things dan found so comforting about him. he says phil was one of, if not the first, openly gay person he met, and i'm sure seeing him be so unapologetically himself was a huge factor in making dan feel safe around him. seeing him go on to use that against phil just a few years later is really hard to watch. i think it also came from a place of jealousy because he wished he could stop caring what anyone else thinks. i'm sure he knew on a logical level that no sensible person thinks a purple phone case = a gay man, but he was always trying to get ahead of the joke just in case. no one can hurt you if you hurt yourself first :(

i'm just so thankful he moved on from that. it clearly took a lot of time and effort to unlearn those ideas, and you can see that because it was such a gradual change. i could say so much about that (prayers for a dangender video essay by dan someday) but basically i'm just really proud. it's not easy to dig yourself out of that pit but he did it :')

Week 1: Celebrate Your Identity

My journey with my gender identity has been like trying to follow a black cat into a tunnel; i've still not really found it.

Having Dan be open about his idea of labels regarding gender has helped me be SO much more comfortable with not knowing which label i fit into or where i stand as someone born with a uterus. i've always felt slightly uncomfortable in the body that i have. hearing that it's okay to exist as a "formless blob" in this world has made me more comfortable and happier in myself! i'm okay with the pronouns i get in person and i'd be okay with different ones too. Dan and Phil being so unapologetically themselves has made me confident and proud to be myself, whoever that may be.

My sexuality identity is similar: though i feel i fall under the category of pansexual, i still feel a little iffy about confining myself to that label, because what if i'm not? i'm still on that journey and that's okay! Dan, Phil, and this community have made me feel so comfortable just existing in this space <3 i feel welcome, and i'm so thankful for that every day.
