Hikaru Solo Live Details (Live Broadcast)
【LIVE Announcement】 For the first time in a long while, Hikaru will be holding a solo live! 🎵 Details about the upcoming live have been revealed on May 20 during a special live stream on the mobile app Music Champ☺️ Wasn’t able to watch the beginning since Keiko decided to do an Instagram Live and obviously, I couldn’t miss out on that XD
Details Date: Date: 2023/0723 Doors open: 17:00 | Start: 17:30 Title: B-day LIVE 2023 -Be the Best day- Venue: CLUB SEATA Tickets: https://eplus.jp/hikarulive/ Lottery period: 2023/5/20 22:00~2023/5/27 23:59 General sale: 2023/6/3 12:00~2023/7/20 18:00 Back-up band: HaKA, Yuki, Yuhei Hisama, Hiroaki Tanabe, Yusuke Suga Notes: The hall has a capacity of 500 people (standing), however, there will be seats for this event so I’m not sure how many people will fit into the venue. According to Hikaru, there will be no guests, no home video release and as of right now, no live stream option.
⁡In other news, Hikaru will hold a special live broadcast on Music Champ on July 2 (19:00~; Sunday) to celebrate her birthday together with us fans. There’s also some sort of “fever” campaign planned, ”fever” is the red firey thingy at the top of each broadcast I think, there’s another orange thingy which also needs to be increased. Not sure about the specifics. Sounds like viewers need to increase Hikaru’s “fever” amount leading up to/during the stream in order to be eligible for a handful of special presents/benefits (e.g. digital photobook for 100 million fever points). A high “fever” number seems to be achieved by buying in-app-items or maybe it’s just necessary to interact a lot and send free emojis? No idea. I don’t understand apps like this at all. Ughh, I really don’t like how this app is forced down our throats...
Live Corner (during today’s broadcast) Hikaru is joined by HaKA (Kenichiro Hakariya), a member of SPICE and C.C.C and the composer of Ambient Border as well as Hikaru’s more recent freelance songs. I love that Hikaru has been singing a lot during her broadcasts lately (inlcuding Kalafina songs) but I hate that I still haven’t figured out how to record those streams T_T 1. Survivor

Anastasia (Umeda Arts, 2023)
Tumblr media
I’m flattered that the overwhelming response to my poll was to bring back reviews :D Since I posted that, Takarazuka has unfortunately been involved in a terrible tragedy (additional information here). I may review the Takarazuka performances I was able to see at a later date, but at the moment I’m going to take some space from doing so.
In the meantime, a very bright spot in a long-awaited trip otherwise filled with multiple bouts of shocking news was the Broadway musical Anastasia, featuring Asami Hikaru (my ご贔屓, kamioshi, bias to end all biases, for those who joined during COVID and somehow missed this) amidst a rather star-studded cast. Getting to see Anastasia was quite special, not only because it’s been 4 1/2 years since I was last able to travel to Japan and see Komu, but also because I HAD tickets to the original Spring 2020 run before, well, you know (not to mention the ruined plans to see fave #2 as the same role in the tkz version). On top of that, it was good.
The Broadway version of Anastasia follows two con men in post-revolution Russia, Dmitri and Vlad, who, amidst rumors that Anastasia Romanov has somehow survived the execution of the rest of the royal family, accidentally find the real one while auditioning actresses to pretend to be her for reward money.
Given that my bias to end all biases taidan’d 17 years ago, I’ve seen my fair share of Japanese theater outside of Takarazuka in my quest to spend as much time in her presence as humanly possible. Usually, I find the non-OG cast members (especially men!!) unimpressive to the point of superfluousness. Imagine my shock when I found myself raising my opera glasses when Komu wasn’t even on stage.
Ranking!!
Anya: Aoi Wakana / Kinoshita Haruka
Tumblr media
Anya is a poor street sweeper with amnesia who has a feeling SOMEONE is waiting for her in Paris (turns out it’s her grandmother, the dowager empress). I was supposed to see each actress twice, but due to the flu making its rounds through the cast, I ended up seeing Wakana three times and Haruka only once… which is unfortunate, because Haruka is an absolute powerhouse, and Wakana is a TV actress. The cast lineup for my first of four viewings was absolutely flawless, and I wish it had been the finale instead (especially because I was in shock from Sora taidan dropping like 3 hours prior to curtain). Haruka has a Broadway-quality voice, and her acting not only made sense, but also lacked that peculiar anime-like delivery that most of the Japanese actors I’ve seen have in spades (IYKYK). Although perhaps she returned from flu recovery too quickly and didn’t have her whole voice, Wakana’s singing wasn’t really up to the challenge of the role; all of Anya’s big solo’s were rendered anticlimactic by very flat long notes. I also found her acting to be over the top and desperate, whereas Haruka’s was quite nuanced.
Dmitri: Kaiho Naoto / Aiba Hiroki / Utsumi Akiyoshi
Tumblr media
Dmitri is the romantic lead, something of a street urchin who starts off by hatching a moneymaking scheme to produce a fake Anastasia, and ultimately gives it all up after falling in love with Anya. I got to see Kaiho and Aiba, and to be honest, the only reason I’m not mad I had to see Aiba once is because that day Kaiho Naoto was Gleb. I know I am very late to this party, but this was the first time I got to see Kaiho Naoto live, and hooooooooooo boy. That man’s voice gave me chills, he acts like a normal person and not a cartoon, and his facial expressions are SO dynamic. His fans in the FIRST ROW had their opera glasses up, and now I take back making fun of them in my head. Incredible casting choice for Dmitri; he did an amazing job going through the full range of emotions and showing character growth, plus he looked so good in that scruffy little outfit. Tbh, marry me (Aiba on the other hand was an anime boy made flesh and blood and I can’t say I cared for it).
Vlad: Osumi Kenya / Ishikawa Zen
Tumblr media
Vlad is Dmitri’s old man friend, a former aristocrat and adulterous lover to Lily. This one is slightly less cut and dry because both actors had their merits, but alas, I’m a big Ishikawa Zen fan. Osumi Kenya is a dancer and Zen is not, and that was quite apparent in any scene with choreography. Other than that, I quite preferred Zen’s knockout voice, nuanced acting, and overflowing kindness. He’s irl bffs with Komu, so I found his Vlad’s chemistry with Lily to be more compelling; but he also integrated himself seamlessly into each cast, despite that I imagine it’s tricky to get the best possible rapport going when the roles are changing all the time. Osumi definitely gave his Vlad quite a bit of enjoyable energy and unique flair, but ultimately, I thought his Vlad was a bit over the top (he’d be a huge hit in a kids’ show), and he seemed to be acting next to rather than with the rest of the cast.
Gleb: Kaiho Naoto / Douchin Yoshikuni / Tashiro Mario
Tumblr media
Gleb, a Bolshevik general trying to fill the shoes of his father who relished executing the Romanov family, is the villain of the show. I was SUPPOSED to see all three Glebs, and I’m quite sad I didn’t, but the flu took Tashiro Mario. I ended up seeing Douchin three times and Kaiho once. This is REALLY HARD, and it’s likely impossible to separate out my feelings toward Kaiho’s Gleb in isolation, because Dmitri, without Kaiho in the role, was not compelling, so the overall impact of the show was less on the not-Douchin day. Kaiho showed up again with the voice that gives you chills, and while his performance throughout most of the show was a bit more low-key, his final scene, in which he attempts to get Anya to admit she’s playing around and return to Russia lest he be forced to shoot her on the spot if she is in fact the real Anastasia, was ABSOLUTELY FUCKING UNHINGED (spit flying everywhere, no wonder everyone got sick). Douchin, however, also has quite a powerful voice, and I think overall he did a better job of coming off as creepy and weird. He was awkward in kind of an is-this-guy-ok way, his barely concealed feelings for Anya were both clearer and more unsettling, and he felt believably indoctrinated into an ideology vs. just this is the villain because we said he’s the villain. His slick, jet-black hair and choice to wear light blue colored contacts also really enhanced the evil image. I really regret not getting to see Tashiro Mario, but I think my ever so slight preference here is Douchin just because his presence balanced the rest of the cast.
Lily: Asami Hikaru / Marcia / Horiuchi Keiko
Tumblr media
Lily is the dowager empress's lady-in-waiting, a former countess who, in her younger days, cheated on her boring husband with Vlad and is currently tending to the dowager empress in refugee-laden Paris. LBR, I didn’t fly across the world to see the other two (although 3 or so days into my trip there was a SCARE where Komu was announced out with an injury, and I thought I might have to… but she recovered in time for my first show!). Ohhhh it was so nice, I missed her more than my COVID-era complacence led me to believe. Lily was a very fun and pleasant Komu role for me. Homegirl is 51 now (don’t talk to me) and fresh taidansha like Tamaki Ryou are getting the heroines she played a decade and a half ago, but Lily isn’t exactly someone’s mom either. She’s funny, and sassy, and wears sick costumes, and has DANCE NUMBERS! Which she did without looking injured at all! With the exception of like 20 seconds in the prologue, Lily does not appear at all until Act 2, but Act 2 is very juicy. I think I liked the look-Vlad’s-back tango even better than her piano-top nightclub solo, but both were utterly delightful. She also has great chemistry with her Yukigumi top senpai Asami Rei, comfortable yet reverent (just like in real life!). I juuuUUUUuuUUUUuuuSsstttt wish they would lower the key for her… just a little… as a treat.........
Dowager Empress Maria: Asami Rei (more like Asami SLAY)
Tumblr media
Y’all… seeing Asami Rei live has BEEN on my bucket list, and the experience did not disappoint. Her voice may be going, but it’s completely age appropriate, and she could have done literally anything up on that stage without it ruining the impact of her presence. I legit inadvertently gasped "mother" into my mask when she made her appearance in a black and silver bejeweled gown to attend the ballet… serving boatloads of charisma uniqueness nerve and talent at 73, to say the least.
The ensemble was also a force and the songs were expertly directed, giving the whole show a stunning sound that has been rare in my experience with Japanese musicals (part vocal talent, part book made for Broadway). The play-within-a-play scene at the ballet was genuinely impressive (it's been a while since I've seen a man jump that high). All in all, a treat to watch!

Nishikdo Ryo for Cinematoday 2023.06.19
rough translation of the interview
Nishikido Ryo is not in a hurry after becoming independent: "I want to live an easy-going life"
Kudo Kankura and Oishi Shizuka, who is currently writing for the 2024 Taiga drama 'Hikaru Kimi e', two extremely talented scriptwriters, have teamed up under the producer and director of 'Ikebukuro West Gate Park' and 'Kisarazu Cat's Eye' for the Netflix series 'Let's Get Divorced' (exclusive distribution starts 22 June). Nishikido Ryo, who established his own label 'NOMAD RECORDS' in 2019 and started his solo career, talks about the changes he has undergone since becoming independent.
Let's Get Divorced is a comedy in which Kurosawa Yui (Naka Riisa), a nationally popular actress, and Shoji Taishi (Matsuzaka Tori), an unenthusiastic hereditary politician, decide to separate, but their respective circumstances make it difficult for them to do so and things fall apart. It is during this delicate period that Yui meets Kano Kyoji, played by Nishikido. Nishikido says: "It's a great honour to be asked to play this role, and I hope I can do it in my own way. However, I wasn't that enthusiastic about it", he recalls when he received the offer.
After becoming a freelance actor, Nishikido "dabbled" in acting, such as in the Amazon Music short film "No Return," for which he worked again with Daihachi Yoshida, director of "Hitsu no Ki”. Following the NHK BS Premiere drama Kazoku Dakara Aishitan Janakute, Aishita no ga Kazoku Datta , this is the first drama in a long time in which viewers are exposed to Nishikido as an actor. However, Nishikido himself said, "You can still ride a bicycle even if you haven't ridden it for a while. Maybe that's how I feel about acting".
For Nishikido, the crank-in for "let's get divorced" was a scene with Naka Riisa. "We went out for Chinese food right after we meet. I had met Ms. Naka during the reading before shooting, but I was still nervous about the first scene. I pretended not to be nervous," he said with a wry laugh.
Kyoji is also a character with a strong presence in the drama. He spends his daytime hours in a pachinko parlour, and at first it is not even clear what kind of work he does. Despite this, he is somehow confident, calm and unfazed, and seems to be living in his own time, detached from his surroundings. As soon as she meets Yui, he quickly enters Yui's heart, which is shaken by her divorce, and while he is at times deeply gentle, he is at other times as cold as a sharp knife. In a word, he is a man who is very appealing to women, and Nishikido pulls off Kyoji in a very natural way. Nishikido says of Kyoji, "There are people who go to very good universities and have amazing titles, but then do unexpected things. I think he has a strong sense of self and has high priorities. And yet, he doesn't expect anyone to understand him. As a man, I envy him if I could live like that. Normally, I would be more concerned about my surroundings," he says, looking somewhat at ease with himself.
Nishikido, however, shows a contented expression after filming for the first time in a long time, saying, "More than anything, it was fun, and I realised that I really like acting. He adds, "It wasn't because I could lead different lives or for any clear reason at all", but "Someone came up with the script, and then the staff all thought about it, decided on the costumes and did the make-up. I memorise the lines, and it takes shape as a work of art. If someone watches it and thinks it's interesting, I'm happy. It's not more or less than that, it's just a feeling," he says, explaining the joy of acting. Unlike music, I don't make my work alone," he says slowly, choosing his words carefully, "I think it's wonderful to make a film together with co-stars and staff.
On the other hand, it is difficult for him to watch his performances objectively. "I don't tell anyone if I have any criticism about my performance (laughs). But I want to think that what came out in my expressions, what was captured on camera, and what was edited was the best I could do.” As for the drama, he said, "I want everyone to see it as soon as possible. It's a very interesting story, and the characters are all lovable. I like that there is no one who ends up being just a hateful person," he said confidently.
How did you spend the time away from acting?  “Nothing has changed. There was never a time when I did not watch movies or dramas, and I never thought to myself, "I want to act too!” It was too presumptuous of me to even think about such a thing. It was my own choice to take a different path.” Ryo said naturally. “I feel that offers received before I became independent have a slightly different meaning than offers received after I became independent. I feel that acting offers is more significant now because they thought I was the right person for the role” He says, expressing his gratitude.
As for the reason why he wasn't in a hurry, he said, "In my case, it was it not I want to act in films but there aren't any films for to appear in, It was the result of my own choices, so I had no negative feelings at all” he said, without wavering in his choice. But he was not aggressively or forward about it and said, "I thought, it's okay if I can't act in the future. So I wasn’t saying, "I'm going to make it in the next production!" I'll just do my best, and if I catch someone's eye, there might be a next time. Even if I don't act anymore, even if I don't do this kind of work, I'd rather live a normal, easy-going life," he says, somewhat overlapping with Kyoji.
It is also striking that he describes his change of heart since becoming independent as 'running, to feeling like skipping'. “Skipping is surprisingly fast yet easy. So I don't dislike it, but I try hard to express it somehow. I enjoyed the parts I enjoyed before, and I still suffer from the parts I suffer from. But now, it is all up to me to decide what path to take. That is why each and every responsibility falls on me. At the same time, I have a solid feeling that I am carving out a path for myself. The experiences I accumulate are clearly different from before. It is up to each person to decide which is better, but I prefer this one. It's not like I can say "No, it's been fine!", but I don't want to say anything negative about it either. So I hope that as more years go by, I can connect today to tomorrow, when I will be glad that I chose the path I have taken so far. Then maybe something will come out of it.” he said quietly and confidently.

late bloomer, ch 7
“There’s my girl,” Kaoru crows as soon as he spots you. At a look from Hikaru, he amends, “Our girl,” and pulls you into a hug. Low in your ear, he says, “Not Haruhi’s, but…”
You push away. “If you’re going to be a dick, I’ll just head home.”
“Noooo,” he whines.
“Ignore him, (Y/N).” Hikaru pops around your other shoulder. “He was three shots in before he even reached the pregame.”
“Yeah, which means she has some catching up to do!” Kaoru offers the red solo cup currently in his hand, full of whatever godawful concoction the Thetas have thrown together this time.
You shake your head, and he pouts at you. “You know my rule.”
“Never drink the jungle juice,” the three of you say in tandem.
Kaoru rolls his eyes, but takes the cup back, at least, knocking back most of its contents in one gulp. You can’t help but wince. Kaoru’s always had the strongest capacity for liquor of anyone you know, which makes you incredibly concerned for his health past graduation. “Spoken like someone who’s never really lived,” he says.
“Spoken like someone who wants to have a working liver when I’m thirty.”
“There’s some canned drinks in the kitchen, I think.” Hikaru says. “Want us to show you?”
“Nah, you can stay here. I’ll be right back.”
You push through the dark and sweaty room and are relieved to make it to the kitchen, which isn’t quite empty but is at least marginally less crowded. You pop open a watermelon seltzer and try to breathe.
“You sure that’s a good idea?”
You almost jump at the sound of his voice. “What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” Kyoya says. He’s leaning against the counter, looking relatively casual in a sweater and slacks. Not exactly frat-party attire, but at least it’s a departure from the suit. “You know overconsumption of alcohol can lead to fainting.”
You roll your eyes, and take a sip of your drink for good measure. A few sips. If Kyoya Ootori is going to try and engage you in some section-asshole-pedantry in the middle of a Theta party, you’d like to be as drunk as humanly possible. “I appreciate the concern, but I doubt one White Claw every three months is going to make me blackout.”
“You don’t drink a lot, then.”
“Are you surprised?”
“Maybe.” If it was anyone else, you would think he was teasing you. But he sounds so serious. Everything he says sounds so serious, and its seriously starting to get on your nerves.
“What, you had me pegged as an alcoholic?”
“Never mind.” He moves to take a sip of own drink, and you raise a brow, looking from the (mostly full) cup to his face. “Vodka and Sprite,” he says by way of explanation. You can tell by the wince on his face after he sips that he’s telling the truth. “Terrible.”
You can’t help but laugh. “What were you expecting, scotch? Or apple juice?”
“Right now I’d take either,” he says. “Gladly. It’d be leagues better than this.”
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“Vodka and Sprite?”
“What you’re doing here,” you correct him. “I’ve never seen someone who looks like they’ve been to less parties in my life.”
“Unlike you, a true connoisseur,” he says, eyeing your can. “How you can make it through one of these with nothing but a White Claw every three months is beyond me.”
“Oh. No, I was dragged here by some friends. I’m not really a party person, either.” You angle your head in the direction of the living room/dance floor. “I wish I was. I mean, they’re good if I’m in the mood, which usually involves being drunk off more than a seltzer.”
“How do you feel about shots?”
“What happened to overconsumption of alcohol can lead to fainting? ” He shrugs. You blink up at him. “I’m not opposed.”
He reaches over your shoulder, and you flinch before realizing that he’s just trying to get at the drinks on the kitchen island. Only at fancy-ass Ouran would the Greek life kids be able to afford a house like this, you can’t help but think. You step aside to allow him better access, and take the opportunity to get a better look at him. He’s not bad-looking. He doesn’t have the type of vitality that Tamaki has, nor is he intimidatingly buff; but he’s tall, and well-dressed, and his shoulders press against the fabric of his shirt in a way that implies a bit of lean muscle. His face looks as though it should be committed to paint (knowing the type of wealth he comes from, it probably has, several times); the smooth, pale-velvet skin; the slim, curved nose, arriving at an offensively delicate point at the end; the dark eyes; the bow-drawn lips; and all of this framed by a defined jaw and well-shaped cheekbones and that strikingly dark hair.
If only he weren’t such an ass.
“Tequila alright?”
You clear your throat, looking away before he can catch you staring at him. “They have salt and lime?”
“They must.”
“Then yeah. Yeah, that’s great.”
He hands you an empty cup and goes about cutting a few lime slices. You take the opportunity to pour your own shot, and wait for him to finish. Ass or not, you have to admit that this particular interaction is going well. Even if it started out with him questioning your drinking choices. “To becoming party people,” he says once you’re set up with the salt and the lime.
“To becoming party people.” You touch your cup to his, lick the back of your hand, down the shot, and find your eyes meeting his as you suck on the slice of lime. For some reason, it brings a smile to your face. You certainly didn’t expect at any point tonight to find yourself in a frat kitchen, taking tequila shots with Kyoya Ootori, of all people. “Does this mean we’re not enemies anymore?”
Now he raises a brow. “Were we ever?”
You snort. “I mean. We didn’t exactly get off on the best foot in class.”
“I hardly think a difference in opinion makes us enemies. It made for interesting conversation, at the least.”
“Oh, no.”
“What?”
You point at him. “You’re one of those devil’s advocate guys. Is that it?”
A little crease appears between his eyebrows. “What?”
“You just like to argue for fun? You get off on it? Is that how you think normal people communicate, just pointlessly debating all the time?”
“We were having a discussion. In a discussion seminar. What’s pointless about that?”
You roll your eyes. “Can we take another shot? Whatever looks like it’ll taste the worst.” You know by now that if you want to get really fucked up, you have to go for the cheap stuff.
Once that shot’s been downed, you clear your throat. “Okay. I just…you really didn’t feel like there was any bad blood between us? I mean, okay, what about the hospital the other day?”
He pauses. “What about it?”
“We…well. I sort of jumped down your throat.” You take a breath, then a sip of your seltzer, then another breath. “So I guess that was my fault. Sorry about that.”
“Forgiven. Though, for what it’s worth, I wasn’t holding it against you.”
“Nice of you.”
“You didn’t seem to be having a great day.”
“Well. Mondays, you know?” You tip your head back, enjoying the buzz that is rapidly taking hold. “Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays…Saturdays. Sundays. Hard to pick a least favorite.”
“Sounds miserable.”
You shake your head. “I’m exaggerating. It’s not actually that bad. But the first week of the semester is always the hardest.”
“And the second week. And the third, the fourth, the fifth.” When you focus your unsteady gaze on him, you’re delighted to realize there’s something like a glint in his eye. He really is teasing you. “And so on, and so on.”
“Sounds miserable,” you parrot back at him, and he almost cracks a smile. “Well. At least Tamaki and Haruhi—”
“Kyoya? What are you doing hiding out—oh.” Olivia stops in the kitchen doorway, and takes in the sight of the two of you. “Hi.”
“Hi.” You respond to her closed-mouth smile with an uneasy one of your own. Olivia seems nice enough, from your little exposure to her, but sorority omegas always make you nervous.
“I thought you were grabbing us drinks,” she says to Kyoya, winding an arm through his. If you weren’t already tipsy-on-the-way-to-shitfaced, you’d swear you see him tense slightly. “But I see you found Little Miss Joan-of-Arc here.”
Your smile freezes on your face as she turns back to you. “(Y/N),” you offer.
“Yeah, I know. Crusading against the big bad alpha-omega industrial complex, or whatever it is, right?”
She laughs. You join in, if only because you don’t know how the fuck else to respond, and those two back-to-back shots were definitely a bad idea. Kyoya doesn’t laugh. She notices.
“What? I’m just joking. It’s funny. (Y/N) doesn’t care, right (Y/N)?”
“Yeah.”
“See?” She cocks her head. “Y’know, it’s so crazy, I feel like I know everyone at Ouran. But I, like, didn’t have any idea of who you were until Monday. Are you a transfer?”
“No, I actually went here for undergrad before—”
“It’s just that I’ve never seen you, like, out. At any benefits or anything.”
And there it is.
There’s no denying—Ouran is a nice school. A private university, an elite and expensive private university, where scholarship students are few and far in between. And the elite tend to flock together. So it’s no wonder that Olivia (Freidmonte, a Google search after that first class revealed, and a literal fucking diamond heiress) would know all of the other rich kids (aka ninety percent of the student body) from benefits and balls and whatever else rich people did to pass the time.
Olivia’s not stupid. She’s probably put two and two together and figured out that you’re just too poor for her to have taken notice of before. But it seems, from the way she’s clinging to Kyoya with a grip that would put an anaconda to shame, that she’s probably just annoyed that a lowly beta on a scholarship would have the audacity to talk to her boyfriend. Drunk or not, you know when you’re not wanted in a room.
You clear your throat. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to…I just…I have to meet some friends out there. Sorry.” The room is starting to spin around you—in a drunk way, not a fainting way, you’re pretty sure—as you make your way out of the kitchen. “See you in class,” you mumble. Neither one of them responds.
Being in the louder, crowded room almost immediately makes you want to throw up, so you push through to the nearest door, which leads to the backyard. It’s not far enough into the season to be cold; a leftover summer evening, a gift in these early September days.
You stumble down the creaky wooden stairs and collapse with your back against the house, and absentmindedly take another sip of your White Claw, before realizing with a groan how that’s definitely not going to make you any less drunk.
Oh, well. You’re too thirsty to really care.
“Having that good of a night, hm?”
Not Kyoya this time; someone you don’t recognize. Or rather, someone you do, but not by name. “Oh. Hi…”
“Reese.”
“(Y/N).” They offer a very ring-heavy hand, which you shake. If you were more sober, you’d try to get a better look. Heavy jewelry bothers you to wear, but you always like seeing it on other people. And the sight of one particular ring rings some bell in your memory as to where you know Reese from. “Oh. You run the beta frat, right?”
If you were drunk, you wouldn’t have said that at all; especially not that bluntly. You’d spent years dodging Epsilon Phi’s recruitment efforts. They seemed nice enough, but you couldn’t justify carving out the time or the money (or the interest) to take part in Greek life. But it seemed like a nice space, as far as frats went. Friendly. Full of people (of all presentations) who didn’t think that betas ought to fade into the background.
One only had to look at Reese to demonstrate that. They were probably the best-looking person you’d seen in your life, right up there with Tamaki Suoh; they even had similar tanned skin and beaming eyes, though their hair was bright copper and closer-cropped than Tamaki’s. Wearing a bright, tastefully low-cut purple shirt and high-waisted jeans, with the aforementioned jewelry (in addition to the rings, you blearily clocked several necklaces, bracelets, and at least one cartilage piercing). “We don’t really call ourselves that, but yeah.”
“Sorry. Sorry, I don’t know what’s wrong with me tonight.” To your horror, you’re getting a little choked up. Something about the slog of the week; the reality of Haruhi going on a date with a guy who is, by all appearances, perfect; Olivia; Kyoya; those two-and-a-half drinks—it’s too much.
“Hey! It’s not a big deal, really. You’re fine.” They peer at you with what you dimly register as concern. “Are you okay? Do you need some water?”
“M’fine.”
“Yeah. Water. C’mon, the kitchen’s this way.”
“No, no, no,” you say, clinging to some vague idea that Kyoya and Olivia might still be there. After some coaxing, you do allow them to get you to the (blissfully empty) kitchen, find you an unopened bottle of water, and get you to divulge the names of the friends you came here with.
They disappear, but you only have all of thirty seconds to feel abandoned before they return with the twins, who fuss over you and determine immediately that you should probably go home. Even though it’s, like, ten in the evening.
This part of the night is the fuzziest, even as you’re living through it. Stumbling down empty streets. Crashing through your front door. Crouching in front of the toilet with one twin holding your hair back. Being tucked into bed on your side. The door; Haruhi’s voice; the door again, and quiet. Someone leaving pills and water and a big blue bottle on your nightstand. Sleep, curling around you.
And then, while you dream: flashes of warmth and witty remarks and dark, dark eyes.

The Future of Kep1er: Tarot Reading
Tumblr media
Xiaoting: 5 of Wands, 6 of Wands, King of Wands rx
I see her going through a period of stagnation and inactivity. This can include her returning back to China or something else. She seems to have a lot of energy left, but she will remain popular. I feel like this period of stagnation will be good for her so she can really balance herself and accept good opportunities.
Chaehyun: Page of Wands, Ace of Cups, 4 of Swords.
Oh I see her reaching out to some people that she knows in the industry! Maybe a senior that can help her? She'll also be involved in some creative projects for sure, I'm not certain that she'll be an idol though. Probably take a break or be a solo artist.
Mashiro: 2 of Swords, The Sun, 5 of Swords.
Even before shuffling the cards, I kept getting "I'm done" "I have nothing left". Yeah she seems to be very tired of her time as an idol and wants to do other things (Could even include starting a family with the Sun) but I see her giving up on being an idol or the entertainment industry as a whole.
Dayeon: Queen of Swords rx, The Lovers, 9 of Pentacles, Judgement
Oh dear, whoever is on her team really needs to watch out. I'm seeing a prominent female figure in her life, I feel like that female (or her) will make quite an error that can cause a scandal and will have people go "🤨😬". I see people being very critical post kep1er era so she needs to watch out and focus on herself financially.
Bahiyyih: 10 of Pentacles rx, 8 of Wands rx, The Magician rx, Justice rx.
I see Bahiyyih recieving an offer (I kept thinking of HYBE during this reading, so interpret it as you will). This will lead to tons of controversy and people will feel like it's unfair. (I'm thinking of nepotism a lot too). During this time, people will be very critical of her and her skills. If she is in a group or something, people will be comparing her to other members and feel like she is less "deserving" as others.
Hikaru: Ace of Cups rx, 5 of Cups rx, 7 of Swords rx, 10 of Swords rx.
Girl... 😭 I don't see it going well for her. Hikaru will most likely go through a creative block which will lead to her possibly being taken advantage of due to this. I see her feeling quite numb and it will take her quite some time to get over it. She needs to watch out for people in the industry that don't have her best interest. I see her feeling very venerable as well.
Youngeun: The High Priestess, Page of Swords, 3 of Swords, Knight of Swords.
Youngeun will most likely go through a phase of stagnation and just sitting back to re-valuate her life and options. She'll be more independent and all that. It's like she hasn't had much time to herself and she probably missed a part of her youth, so she'll be trying to enjoy life as much as she can. I'm getting "incognito" as well so I don't see her being quite active.
Yujin: Temperance, The Devil, Justice.
Yujin will feel very limited to do lots of stuff due to her age. She'll be fine though, she'll probably live a comfortable life. I'm not getting much info on it but I don't think she'll be an idol again. Justice.. (something with law?).
Yeseo: 3 of Swords rx, Knight of Swords rx, The Star.
Yeseo is the only one that I'm very confident that she'll be an idol again. I feel like this could have been a last minute decision and she could have been quite impulsive while making it. I see her embracing her new lifestyle quickly, so I wouldn't worry about her!

Anime NYC 2023 - I Still Have a Place
Tumblr media
What a weekend.
Anime NYC 2023 just ended and while there were a few things I didn't like, I really enjoyed my time there this year. And more importantly, it was a personal epiphany for me.
I started the weekend by attending the Viz Media panel. There weren't really any significant announcements, but Yoshifumi Tozuka, the creator of Undead Unluck, stopped by and he was great. It was a teaser of his own panel the following day, but Tozuka-sensei did enlighten fans about Undead Unluck and how he wanted to present the series to fans worldwide.
After that, I went to the Autism in the Anime Fan Community panel. This was a live panel version of the "Autism in the Anime Fan Community - Solo Version" video by James Williams, an anime fan diagnosed with autism and a public speaker on autism awareness. James has been doing the panel at various conventions over the past couple of years. It was a very raw and vulnerable panel on the challenges those with autism face at conventions. James also had a special guest, Larissa Grabois, an artist who uses music and art to teach people about children living with autism. She has music videos and books pertaining to autism on her website and I will be paying very close attention. This provided much food for thought.
After that, I didn't stick around for the night panels. Though It was nice to hear Denpa license the ODDTAXI manga as I know people who adored the anime when it came out.
So onto Saturday, I went to the Yen Press panel and was impressed with what they did. They did a fun "Know the Editors" section alongside their announcements, where each editor would promote a title they work on and provide "Useful Nihongo" (which isn't actually useful in a regular context) to use. It was pretty funny to see. Yen Press also gave a shout out to The Summer Hikaru Died, which I yelled "YES!" to. Not many of the new titles they licensed caught my eye, but the one that did was She Likes Gays, But Not Me. I will say this - the manga isn't a romantic comedy and that's why I can't wait for its release in 2024.
Afterwards, I went to the Dark Horse Manga panel. There wasn't really anything new announced per say, but they did promote the latest Deluxe Edition of Berserk and the 1st omnibus of Innocent coming out very soon. Also, Carl Horn and Zack Davisson are truly the manzai duo of the manga industry scene. They have a very fun chemistry that really takes the best of both of their personalities and mixes them into something you really don't see in manga publisher panels. Both also know A LOT about comics in general. If you ever get a chance to see a Dark Horse Manga panel, do it. Carl and Zack really make worth it your while.
I didn't stick around for the later panels on Saturday night, but I know the Kodansha Manga panel that happened that night was great. There's a LOT of fun stuff coming out from them in the future. Blue Lock has become arguably THE big mainstream manga hit of 2023. I love a lot of their titles as their stories are often ones I value highly. What I'm looking forward from them? Home Office Romance (which was REALLY popular in the manga Reddit) and Sheltering Eaves (Another Rie Aruga story? Sign me up).
On Sunday, I only attended the Star Fruit Books panel. I got to learn a lot about the company being there and it was actually a small group of people who attended. So it made for a more intimate experience compared to other industry panels. Even though the publisher started during COVID, they have made huge strides in being an strong publisher of independent manga (alongside Denpa). I actually inquired about them possibly licensing manga stories from indie creators about mental health/illness because I have heard there's a lot of manga out there in Japan that covers those topics.
After that, I was done with everything. I did manage to get some nice items from booths and played mahjong with the Riichi Nomi club.
I think the convention was fine for the most part. It was crowded, but I didn't feel overwhelmed. I always had space to move around. The only things that stood out to me were that some of the panel rooms were a bit too warm to my liking and that the gaming area just felt too tight. In particular, mahjong. My club's presence last year had a good amount of space for mahjong. This year, we were relegated to the show floor and to a far end corner of the convention center. I hope this changes next year.
(Side note: NYC public transit on the weekend continues to suck ass. Why have a train stop right next to the convention center when weekend construction would prevent trains from stopping there? Sigh.)
And speaking of next year, Anime NYC 2024 will happen in the summer - August 23-25, 2024. It's going to be the bang that ends summer convention season in the U.S. after Anime Expo, San Diego Comic-Con and Otakon. There's definitely concerns about the timing, but they will have the FULL convention center at their disposal. I don't mind honestly as I dislike going to a convention when it's happening a month before winter starts.
Anyway, I'm going to finally make a reference to the headline of my post. For those of you who read my birthday post, anime and manga don't seem to inspire me a great deal lately. Getting into mahjong was one of the best things I did for my mental health over the past 2 years. Despite being a manga blogger, I was becoming more of a mahjong addict.
However, when I arrived to the con on Friday, I was greeted by a manga journalist/colleague that I hadn't seen in years. It was a surprise to see them and we caught up. We had a wonderful discussion about manga, comics and pop culture.
And then on Saturday, I got to meet people I followed on Twitter that I never met in person. I even reunited with a few blogger folks along the way. We talked about manga and convention trends that made me smile. I also met up with Anime for Humanity (who I volunteered in the past) and finally met its founder at the event. I even reunited with a local Japanese culture personality that I hadn't talked to in years. It felt really cool.
To cap it off, I finally reunited with Peter Tatara, who was working the Japan Society booth. For those who don't know, he is the founder of Anime NYC and now Director of Film at Japan Society New York. He also has a long and established history of promoting anime in New York. When I first started my foray into anime fandom in 2008, it was Peter who MCed events at the Kinokuniya NYC store that got me hyped. We worked together at those events a few times due to a mutual connection we both shared. Even though he's a huge and very busy personality now, Peter would take the time to talk to me in years past. We both shared laughs and talked about how long we known each other.
Ever since I got so deep into mahjong, I questioned my place in the manga fan community. I wasn't active as much on Twitter as other online manga personalities these last few years. While I do get hyped, I don't get heavily excited covering manga license announcements. I don't have a huge manga collection at home. I struggle to keep up with everything.
And then someone at the con told me that because of my interest in what's happening the world regarding mental health problems that plague communities, I still bring a certain view that's unique and refreshing to hear. After meeting and reuniting with a bunch of faces, I can't leave the manga blogging scene. I just can't. I love talking about manga so much still. Mahjong still has a place in my heart, but there's nothing that gets me going like talking about the stories and characters that shape people's lives.
What's more important is that being around the industry/pros/press folks I was with at Anime NYC tell me that I still have a place here. I may not be attending everything manga-related, but I want to be the person from the shadows who talks about things that definitely deserve to be heard. Besides, it's much cooler doing things in the shadows than being in the spotlight.
An old friend I saw at the convention on Sunday said that I looked the happiest I've been in years. Mahjong definitely played a huge part in that and I want to bring that energy back into my manga blogging.
I've been going to conventions for 15 years now. So many people in my life that I met via conventions have come and gone. People that I wish were still here. I have often felt lonely. Being 41 now also doesn't help either.
And yet, I keep meeting new people at conventions like Anime NYC who inspire me and value my take on things. I may not be living the best life, but I'm definitely happy-ish with what I have now. And that's all I ever wanted to ask for.
Also, thank you to everyone I talked to at Anime NYC. I'm now really ready for the 2nd half of my life.

Some things about me (which explain my taste in characters)
I am a huge bird nerd, both on this site and IRL.
Everyone who follows this blog knows I go by “Finch” for my online persona.
There was a time I wanted to be a pilot, before realizing it was too hard
I’ve wanted to be an ornithologist since I found out what it is. I want to study birds for a living.

[People you think are sparkling]
Nakajima Kento! Even among the sparkling Johnny’s (artists), I think he is top class. It’s really amazing how he’s always thorough. I’ve always thought he was amazing since his teens but he really is a pro at sparkling. I might not have the same sparkle level as Kento, but I want to have the energetic sparkle that seems to seep out from within! A sparkle that says “That person seems fun!” You only live once, don’t you want to enjoy that? Of course, there are also not-so-fun things but I try to think “It can’t be helped~ I should let this go~” whenever that happens, and think of what’s next!
[Sparkling skill]
In the past, I was allowed to do a solo magazine cover and I trained my body for it! When I thought of the reason I was allowed to do the solo cover, as expected, I wanted to have a body that can fascinate people. That’s why I asked Hikaru for help and said “I want to make my abs amazing!”, and then I used the ab roller he recommended a lot. And in less than 1 month I was able to have abs worth looking at!
[An episode where you weren’t sparkling]
I think I’m not sparkling when I’m seriously thinking about something (laughs). Lately, as expected, I’ve been thinking about the anime “~Vanguard~” a lot! I’ve experienced dubbing a movie with “White Snake: The Origin” but it’s my first time being a regular in a series. How far can I delve into my character is the really really hard part. At first, I started by fumbling about (the character) while thinking about what I should do, but I was able to grasp the feel of the character as I go, and on the contrary, I was able to see an unexpected side. When I asked other voice actors, they said that one of the good points of being in a TV series is that the actor gets to gradually build up the character. Recently, I was able to actually feel that! But when I look at the voice actors around me, it makes me think I still haven’t dug deep enough. I want to go deeper!
[A view you admire and want to see someday]
The view from the National Stadium’s stage. I was able to see it when I was a backup dancer for Arashi but that view is really amazing! Outdoors is also nice! You would see how the weather changes. And you’d start while it’s still bright outside, and then the lights and penlights that didn’t stand out at first would quickly start shining. The temperature would also gradually get colder, especially when the wind blows and makes you go “Uwa~ that feels nice!” I want to see that view in our own concert someday.

Sono Saki He Review
To commemorate finally having the finances to buy this album(even if it's just one type), I will do a review(with 0 musical knowledge).
Butterfly Dream. 8/10 At first I wasn't sold. But after a few listens it grew on me. I like the nice happy sound and it has a fantasy theme. I'm a sucker for fantasy themes.
Napa Rui. 10/10 I like the Celtic vibe. This is my fave in this album. I hope I get to watch this live one day.
Shirushi. 9/10 Nice and calm ballad. I can see myself listening to this when I want to chill. I like how Wakana's voice is so gentle here.
Kibo 8/10 I like this, the melody is good. But I'm still unsure whether I like how the high notes were done. But overall it's a great song. It's one of my favs in this album.
kara. 9/10 I never knew that this song would fit a game MV. But even without a tie-in, I still like to listen to it. I just have a little issue with a few parts that need more force and power. Also, I wonder if it's a conscious decision to do the last "SHO-wo" that way.
Sono Saki he - interlude 8/10 nice instrumental break.
Kemono. 7/10 I wasn't sold at first. I put off listening to it because I was so turned off by the start. There is a feeling of disharmony with how Wakana sang at the start and the instrumental. But after listening to it fully, I eventually liked it. The Vocaloid style was new and interesting.
Asu wo Yume Mite Utau 10/10 I just love ballads. Wakana's voice is so nice here.
Flag 10/10 I love it at first listen. I love the fantasy feel and the emotions in the delivery. Also, I love the contrast between the gentle parts and the powerful parts. I hope Wakana would have more tie-ins with games. I think this was the first time I heard her sing in such a strong and fast way in her entire solo career. I want more songs like this.
sono saki he 7/10 Nice song but compared to the rest, this was underwhelming.
Ato Hitotsu 8/10 Nice ballad. But nothing stands out for me.
Overall. A solid album. I like most if not all of the songs and I love that there are more songs with a fantasy feel. I hope Wakana would go more in that direction. Wakana is suited for fantasy-themed songs. Her voice has this ethereal feel, add a nice fantasy image and it would be perfect.
That said, I can see that Wakana is still figuring out where she wants to go with her singing. She still has a few things to improve on. Like to develop a stronger voice for a few parts. There are times when I wish she used a fuller voice in a part of a song. But compared to the start of her solo career she has improved a lot. I hope she continues to work with a vocal coach.
I don't know the status of Wakana's career if she's producing good return on investment. But I am glad that her music and stuff are still of good quality and that she's still getting wonderful songs and opportunities. I hope she gets more tie-ins with games. The game industry is a good industry, it's still growing and has a wide range of audiences. I wish all the best for Wakana's career.
I'm still here...
I'm still here, waiting for Spacecraft to figure things out to get Kalafina a reunion concert. Even if Yuki Kajiura is not ready to produce for Kalafina, the agency can still approach Keiko and Hikaru.
A concert is enough for me... Kalafina has so many beautiful songs. It'd be a waste if no one would sing them live.

My journey with Idol’s animes and mangas - Part 3
A new path of this journey has ended. Today I'm going to talk about “Kami Kuzu Idol” (or, “Phantom of the Idol”, but I don't like the choice of the english title).
Tumblr media
BUT! First of all I want to say, I’m not a big fan of men idols. I tried, it is hard (but lately maybe is not), and I just can say the biggest company of men idols is Johnny’s, where you can find groups like Arashi, NEWS, Hey! Say! JUMP, Sexy Zone (if you saw Fuller House, you might know them) or King & Prince;
Tumblr media
but I know there’s another one called DD Company, which has groups I’ve been told to listen (and are interesting), these being MeseMoa, *ChocoLate Bomb!! and Panda Dragon.
Tumblr media
Okay but… Why am I saying this? Well...
Kami Kuzu Idol is an anime about a guy called Niyodo Yuuya, who is in a duet group with Yoshino Kazuki called ZINGS
Tumblr media
; this guy (Niyodo) is an idol just because he thought it was easy money,
Tumblr media
has the problem that he doesn’t give his best… Well, anything. Suddenly he found the ghost of the “Kami Idol” Mogami Asahi; we have them talking about how Asahi died, how she really misses being an idol (she died just when she reached the center as she said). After a small and involuntary action from Asahi (she literally possessed his body and couldn’t get out for a moment), they started working together
Tumblr media
and making Yuuya a better idol and partner for Kazuki, because, yes, there was a kind of threat to both of them to get better (well, Niyodo) or Yoshino would go solo (and he has a bit of stage panic).
Tumblr media
After the first live being possessed by Asahi, all changed.
I won’t lie, I hated Yuuya, at first he even wanted to overwork Asahi, but she wants to see him get better. Niyodo doesn’t know a thing about idols, seems to not pay even a small attention to what he’s been told at work, or about being a fan, so he won’t give a kind of connection with his fans, as idols do. So Asahi’s work also becomes a kind of “Let me teach you about this wonderful world, work, my never ending dream” (she doesn’t say this, is my interpretation of her actions).
Tumblr media
A part of the anime is also “OshiBudo like”, this meaning that fans have a point to exist as characters. Mainly three fans, who are Niyodo’s. They’re more comic, but as I said about OshiBudo, they work for their idols; oh right, in this case the fans are all women…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until a certain moment, because ZINGS isn’t the only group, another important (just one character to be honest) is C Grass. They are the biggest idol group in the anime, “The princes of the nation” or something like that. Well the leader Setouchi Hikaru, was (or better said still is) a big fan of Mogami Asahi, and he was looking to ZINGS, he found sometimes the same mannerisms of Asahi on Niyodo (I wonder what would he think if he knew the truth)
Tumblr media
and he even threatened Yuuya to stop disrespecting Asahi in that way, this also makes him to try not use her a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This anime was nice to watch, but tries to convey many things (i think) in 10 episodes.
Now a meme i agree with for most of this anime.
Tumblr media
The important point is how it ends, saying that an idol is someone who stands on a stage and shines, so they make their fans’ hearts shine, and while the fans loves them more, the idol’s shine will grow, and as the fans keep loving them (this meaning after they are idols, whatever is the reason) they will keep shining; obviously this last part are heavier words as it refers Asahi’s death, and her surprise about still having fans that still love her; but it is applicable to that time after the day they graduate (leave being idols, specially if they become a normal person)
Tumblr media
I like how Asahi explains what being a fan is, how a fan feels, how important it is to Niyodo, even though this dummy just realices it basically in the last episode.
The songs are nice to listen to, but i wouldn’t get all over that, but the meaning of some of these are explained at the last episode.
The opening was “Let’s ZING!”
The endings changed basically for every episode (well, it was more like rotative)
Personally I Liked “Uraomote no Duet” and “Hare La Lu La”
The 3D was used for scenes where they dance, but I found it a bit weird when i looked at Niyodo, personally i don’t think it fits right with his character design.
Tumblr media
THEY HAVE DIADEM MICROPHONES! I’m sold with microphones at sight (please learn SHINEPOST)
Tumblr media
I think I don’t need to say that Asahi Mogami is my favorite character; but also, without her there, the story wouldn’t exist as it is. She’s cute, a top idol, she really likes that work, and is really proud about it,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but not being annoying, that’s why she helps Yuuya; she has told even when she failed, stuff she doesn’t know about (skin care for example) and how she did it. She is such a pure soul.
Tumblr media
Yoshino is a cute guy, the total opposite of Yuuya, like a lost puppy I'd say. You think in the first episode he might lack self trust, and is confirmed later. He does his best, maybe limited by that self trust lack.
Tumblr media
The Niyodo fans are funny, in a way relatable, but not as much as the fans we saw on OshiBudo; because it is also a completely different ambient. You can see part of ZINGS 'story through them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Niyodo is annoying,
Tumblr media
but you may understand why he might think some stuff, how he does stuff. He gets trust on Asahi to even avoid overwork her, and to work in a way he can make her proud (specially last episode). At the end you learn to like him.
Hikaru is interesting to me, he’s a kind of tsundere fan of Niyodo; I don’t care about this point though. There’s an episode where we have context how he became an Asahi’s fan, and then an idol, and even how he got her death’s news. But my interest is how he became a fan, because my emotional state was probably a bit similar to his; I don’t want to put here personal stuff, but feeling empty, and not having such energy to even go to school,
Tumblr media
and then having your heart filled with that magic idols give, is pretty important.
Tumblr media
“We want the fruity level” you might think (yes, i think it is important to add this on every post). OKAY! The point here is the work Yoshino puts into not becoming a soloist, is not only because of his own good against his stage panic; he says it. Besides that, Hikaru is like a tsundere Niyodo’s fan, he even blushes a bit hard at one point.
Tumblr media
The fruity level is “meh”, but exists.
With all said, it isn't the best anime, has one of the bestests girls, touches some light topics in an interesting way, gives a good laugh, and is casual.
I give it a 6 or 7 out of 10.
Tumblr media
But it is recommendable, at least to be all “awwwww” about Asahi being a ball of cuteness and love for being an idol.
