I think it's so reductive to say Shuro only liked falin while disliking laios bc he wanted to "fuck her", kind of a bad faith read and needlessly crass like...
It's a good point that ppl react to autistic traits differently depending on how attractive they perceive a person, but I think what happened w shuro and laios is a larger conversation about how boy autism manifests and is treated vs girl autism, a conversation I've seen gaining traction re: the fact that ppl filter their Perception of autism thru a male white filter, and that girls have a drastically lower rate of being clocked early if at all, and that ppl struggle to even conceive of say a brown girl w autism (this of course being in the simplest language without getting into a more complex look at genders and other social dynamics and how that intersects w neurodivergence)
Also along those lines, I think it's a larger conversation on how men socialize vs women, stereotypically. Of course men feel deeper feelings than they are often given credit for, for patriarchal bullshit reasons. It's common for ppl to express that "men don't need/want to talk about their feelings", which they do and benefit from of course, but that doesn't remove the fact that they often are socialized not to, and don't always get the support they need to talk about them well. It's a common thing and used to be a common media trope that bad tension might simmer between two guys, then they get into a physical fight and the air is cleared and they are friends again, hell it happens it shonen all the time, and in text that's a version of what happened with Shuro and laios. They didn't know how to discuss it, things came to an emotional head in a charged moment, they threw hands for a bit, then that release cleared Shuro's head enough to reconsider his perceptions and the two have a much more level conversation.
This of course all without touching on how I and a lot of others read Shuro to be autistic as well, and how lots of fans are determined to read him in as bad as faith as possible and can once again only clock white boy autism, where laios gets a pass for any boundary pushing that he does, but Shuro is evil for not being able to express or understand some of his feelings until they come out at crit mass, or struggling social conventions
This also discredits his feelings for falin so much where I get everyone wants to hate him for being het or whatever, but I get the impression that he saw the things that were strange about falin and liked her because of those things, that she was someone who was kind to him without the same over the top energy that overstimulates him when it comes to laios, and having shown no romantic interest in anyone in the past, fell in love. He isn't creeping on her and trying to see her body and grope her for comedy beats or anything, we see him looking at her with eyes full of love as she plays w a bug she found on the ground, and we know she saved him from a nightmare in the past, which we saw involves waking someone from a dream about their greatest trauma and helping them cope with it. This stance that he's just trying to fuck her undermines these things, misinterprets what is overall a pretty chaste romance, and cheapens the fact that falin is THAT LOVABLE. He loved her because she's lovable, and despite having a horrible childhood where she was assigned no worth, the reality is that a group of people love her so deeply as to risk everything, which is something you often kind of wish for when you were an ostracized nd person like she was
IDK this whole post is a rambling unedited mess I just saw some post about this that pissed me off LMAO IDK why this fandom is so determined to deny shuro any personhood, I try to just brush this discourse off but it's hard when the topics of discourse can remind u how rampant fandom racism is constantly 😔

i think that if someone sat me down as a kid, and really explained to me that different and weird doesn't have to mean bad, i think i would hate myself just a little bit less. and i didn't really come from bigoted parents or anything. i mean my dad supports me fully, and although my mom gives off a bit of a homophobic, transphobic vibe, she'll be dead before she admits she doesn't support one of her children in every way possible (she doesn't at all, she just really likes lying to herself). but when i think about it more and more, my dad's not the most open-minded person in the world. a lot of the good parts about myself came from my dad, and i love him y'know, but as i get older i find myself figuring out why these little things about him never sat right with me. and i'm not trying to claim some sort of 'holier-than-thou' sort of stance, i'm flawed in a lot of ways, i know, i try to work on it, but with my dad it's strange. i've viewed him my whole life as this sort of saint. he was always my favorite parent growing up, even before i figured out how horrible the way my mom was treating me. throughout my whole life, my view of my parents has been very black and white. my mom's the bad parent, my dad's the good parent. and it's so easy to view life in black and white, it's so easy to let my dad assume the role of this perfect parent in my brain, it's so easy to let my mom be to blame for everything. and i'm not at all diminishing the effect of what my mom did, i'm not lifting her blame in the slightest, she's still the worst of the worst in my mind, but the pure white that surrounds my dad is starting to shift to grey. i find myself doing a double take at a good chunk of the stuff my dad says these days. and half of it is me overthinking it, i think to much, hell, this blog is more than enough proof of that, but the other half is real genuine cause for concern. and the awful part is i can barely remember any of it, i came up to my room to write this with a specific thing he said in mind, and i can't remember it now. this is the problem with my brain being stuck in survival mode. i've been stuck for a while and it's not healthy and it's effecting everything and most of all it effects my memory. i find myself forgetting a lot of the bad things happening to me (the good things too, but more of the bad things have been lost). but i still remember bits and pieces of the fights that we had when i tried to tell him i think i have adhd. god those nights were awful. and who the fuck knows what would happen if i told him i think im autistic too (i've taken the raads r test, i got a 185, stfu about self-diagnosis). and that's the thing, i think he's been told different is bad and he's just relaying the message on to me. and autism is genetic, mental stuff is usually genetic, and i find myself figuring out that all his quirks, this huge list of things that make him a bit different, they're traits of autism. i'm pretty sure i got it from him. and the one time i tried to bring it up in recent years (delicately to avoid another screaming match), i got hit with a "well everybody's a little autistic", no, no they're not, and i told him that and his response was "well, you know what i mean". and i think this is his justification. if everybody's a little different, then nobody's different, right? and i think if he just accepted the fact that it's okay to be different and it's okay to be weird, that he would've been able to relay that onto me, and i wouldn't of had to spend all these year unlearning that different is bad. and he's told me before that being different isn't bad, but in my many years of life i've come to learn that people have determined that there's a 'good' weird and a 'bad' weird. and autism and adhd and all that jazz got lumped in with the 'bad' weird. because how could people be quirky if there wasn't a 'good' weird? there's the weird that gets people laughing with you and there's the weird that gets people laughing at you. and i just wish i was told earlier that there shouldn't be a difference. idk rant over

A/N: Beta read by the lovely @hollandcrush !! <3<3
Request (Summary): can you please write one about Tom, who is on the filming process of cherry and has some emotional problems because he feels that his character is already part of his life, so he comes home very angry and in a bad mood, so he just snaps and creates a big fight with the reader and just says things that he obviously didn't meant, you know very angst, and at the end just very fluff.
Hope you like this anon! Lemme know your thoughts heh <3<3
Warnings: breakdowns, slight vomiting but it’s not graphic. I’m not in any way romanticizing or sexualising breakdowns.

Tom was an ambitious guy. He took his roles seriously, no matter what his character was and who he played. It was an admirable trait, the way he both enjoyed his work and worked hard to earn a high place in such a place as Hollywood.
You always took pride in how amazing and accomplished your boyfriend was, your heart swelling whenever you heard his name being mentioned in events and interviews. You enjoyed how he tried to diversify the movies he worked in.
("I've been playing the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man for so long, it's about time I play someone different now." He once said in a Jimmy Kimmel interview. You were watching from the audience, smiling as the audience roared in affirmation.
"Well looks like you took quite a big leap from playing a superhero." Jimmy said, smiling at the audience with his paparazzi smile.
You knew the question was scripted, quite harmless, but you still noticed how his shoulder stiffened, his smile not wavering once.
"Well yeah, I used to be a superhero and now I'm a heroin addict." He joked, winking at the audience as he ran a hand through his nearly hairless head.
He cried himself to sleep that night, burying his face in your chest as you shushed him. )
It always worked in his favour, with the incredible support his family and fan base provided. And he was always so humble about it.
Filming Cherry, however, was way different than he thought it would. With filming Cherry came consequences that he didn't necessarily like. He knew what he was bringing on himself and his family when he was first introduced with the script.
(Contrary to popular belief, he didn't actually give out spoilers, it was just small promotional stunts that kind of took over as his reputation to spoil minor details.)
The process was intense, getting into the mindset of "Cherry" was taxing, and people were beginning to notice it in him. He was more restless, tugging at his non existent curls when he thought no one would notice.
He was more clingy, more appreciative of your body and you, letting you know that there was no sexual intent behind his acts of caressing your waist at random times. You didn't notice the change in his behaviour.
He had always been like this, watching you with the most gratifying gaze a man could muster, his pretty brown eyes like globes of whiskey, staring at you with a muffled expression. You didn't notice.
There had always been a cutting edge to his voice, you knew and adored it. Behind the British actor who played Spider-Man, he was your Tom. Your Tom who gave you forehead kisses and baked cakes with you and made silly playlists that reminded him of you and you of him, your Tom who worshiped the ground you walked on, your Tom, your Tom and your Tom.
(Sometimes you envied that he was an actor, so good at hiding any emotions he felt, it came easy to him, just another fake emotion like he was a face behind the camera.)
He was never aggressive towards you. Never. Even on tough days, he was soft, caring and understanding to the point where it made you mad, immediately making you feel guilty. He worked so hard and yet here you were, blaming him for being nice, never standing up for himself.
"Uh, Tom, Tom stop, wait." You grunted, pushing his shoulders as he scrambled away from you at your discontent.
You held his face, his breath hitching, hyperventilating as he tried to get himself together.
Ever since he had started filming Cherry, he had been away from you. And now that you were finally here, he had been all over you, making love to every inch of your skin, like it was a holy grail he had to find, caressing your warm skin under his fingers making you shiver as his nimble fingers wandered. It was the intimacy, sexual and quasi-sexual, that made you realise, that there was something wrong.
Sex- it had been a constant in your life other than Tom. But of course, you didn't live on it. It was but a fuel that strengthened your relationship, it was about discovery and showing your vulnerable sides. It was a reminder of the coffee dates and baseball matches. It was loving, gentle and raw, like a gentle breeze caressing your face.
But this, this was different. And you noticed. This, what you had been doing, it was fucking. It was aggressive and needy and it felt good, but at the same time, it felt different.
"Baby?" You asked softly, trying to meet his eyes in the dark lit trailer. It was late, way past filming times, the only time you got to see his vulnerable side.
You should have been in his hotel room, but you were in his trailer instead. All alone in the all encompassing darkness, it made your heart stutter beats.
"Baby speak to me. What's happening, who's doing this to you?" You ask once again, holding onto him firmly this time, his squirming frame making you loosen your hold. You didn't care that you were naked, he had already seen it all.
Fiddling with the rough sheets, he huffed a heavy breath. And that was all it took for the dam to break.
"Tell me how do you feel baby, you're starting to scare me." You urged. All you got in response was his muffled sobs. Pulling him forward, you let his head rest on your bare chest, rivulets of tears sliding down your warm skin, almost burning you like acid, his tiny hair tickling you, a very contrasting feeling.
"I can't do it. I can't take it anymore." He sniffed, wrapping his strong arms around you, shivering at the contact. It was a cold night in Cleveland, and you were naked and he was crying. You were berating yourself for not noticing.
"What can't you take anymore?" You hold him, tracing circles on his buzz cut hair, just the way you did when he had his curls.
"I feel like I'm becoming him. I don't like it at all, I try and try but I can't." He sobs, shoulders hitching with each sob. You felt your heart break, the sounds of his cries sending daggers into your skin.
How could you have not noticed? The lively sunshine of a man was almost an empty shell. The interviews with former drug addicts had been excruciating for you, pity, disgust, sympathy and every other sinful emotion swirling in your mind.
You couldn't believe that you hadn't thought about Tom, of what an effect it would have on him.
"Bub, listen to me, carefully," you said, shushing him as he continued to look at you, teary eyed and red nosed, snot dripping out of his nose,"you listen to me. You're strong and resilient and nothing like him okay? He's not you. You're Tom Holland. You're brilliant and brave and amazing okay?"
"But I don't feel that way!" He said, his aggressive stance surprising you, "he's- he's…"
"He's what?" You asked, a little too impatient. Muttering a sorry, you rub your palm on his cheek, kissing the soft, moist skin.
"I don't feel so good." He croaked, getting up suddenly, making a run for the washroom. You rushed after him, watching him as he heaved into the toilet. Rubbing his back, you muttered affirmations, curling besides him as he sat on the ground, his back to the cold wall.
You got up to switch on the lights, feeling his hands tugging yours, a soft "stay" coming out of him.
"Better?" You asked, feeling him now against your collarbone.
"I shouldn't be this affected, this- this isn't fair. I'm overreacting, I'm sorry I worried you baby I swear I didn't mean to-"
"Shh, Tom first of all, you're not overreacting okay?" You smiled, kissing his nose, moving towards his brows and his forehead, "It's perfectly reasonable. The role you're playing...It's not exactly picking daisies. Fuck you're playing a heroin addict Tommy, a broken soldier with PTSD, a breakdown was inevitable. It only shows that you're human."
"Really?" He smiled, it looked more like a grimace, a plea for reassurance.
"Yes, really." You said, booping his nose, eliciting a giggle from him,"now, you better go to bed mister, you have an early shoot don't you?" You playfully scolded, kissing his lips, laughing as he carried you bridal style.
"Tomorrow will be better." You whispered, kissing his eyelids, already closed, chest moving rhythmically as you counted his pulse, making sure he was completely asleep before slipping on your clothes, covering him with the thin quilt.
***
"Is everything okay on set?" You asked casually, watching the crewmates work tirelessly in the daylight.
You were standing next to Ciara on a prop jeep, fiddling with the water bottle held in your hand.
"Hmm, as okay it can be with two people playing drug addicts." She shrugged, looking at you with a small smile.
"Are you okay?" You asked, turning to give her your full attention, remembering your boyfriend's breakdown yesterday.
"It gets… intense at times. Some scenes are hard to play, but we're okay. Mostly." She answered, taking your water bottle and chugging the water.
"I'm not a therapist, but you can talk to me, you know?" You smiled, holding her shoulder as she gave you a bashful smile.
"It's been tough on Tom. He's more aggressive, nearly had a breakdown during a scene." She said.
"Yeah, that.. that happened yesterday too."
"It was time, a person can only hold so much right?"
"Yeah."
You pondered her words, wondering if you could do anything to curb this.
"I think I need help." He said one day while you were eating dinner. Harry, who was sitting next to you, looked up from his plate, giving you a knowing look before clearing his throat.
"I'm gonna get some water." He said, waving awkwardly at you and getting up. You took that as a cue to scoot closer to Tom, running your hands through his camel hair.
"That's very brave of you hun, asking for help." You smiled, kissing his cheek softly. You felt him smile, sliding closer to you, holding you by your waist.
"I learnt from the best." He muttered in your hair, kissing your forehead.
You felt his love that day, felt the way he ran his smooth fingers on your waistline, sliding across your thighs with care and softness you hadn't felt in a while. He was healing. It was a process, it took time but it happened.
***
You were walking across the library, his hand in yours, your hearts beating in silence.
"How was your appointment?" You asked, shivering in the cold air. You rubbed your palms together, bringing your jacket closer to your chest, huffing the cold air.
"It was good, much different from what the media portrays. She even showed me this meme she thinks you would like, look." He said, bringing out his phone to show you the saved meme.
You laughed at his eagerness, kissing his lips as a final gratification.
"Well it looks like you're having a great time. You have another scene left to do today in the evening so we better scram." You reminded him.
You always did that, remind him of his schedule, reminded him to take a breath when he felt like he was drowning. You reminded him of home and what he had to look forward to.
"Why can't we have a lazy day today?" He whined, kissing your neck, making you giggle as it tickled.
"You know you can't do that hun, you already took three days off." You snickered, poking his sides.
"Well that sucks. I just want to spend my day with my girl, is that too much to ask?" He smiled, kissing your forehead, one hand holding yours, swinging back and forth, the other holding a large cup of coffee in a tight grip.
You reached to loosen his fingers, taking a sip, slurping loudly, making him laugh. You decided you liked this laugh much better, it was breathy and free, a melody to your ears.
You noticed how he was more relaxed and back to being that ray of sunshine. Back to being your Tom.

I am once again thinking about the lost potential of anti-LK Aloth in Deadfire or maybe Deadfire Aloth in general but since I don't know what pro-LK Aloth is like I can't really comment on him
Because the way I see it, while responsibility has always been a primary trait of his, how Aloth handled responsibility itself has always been determined by how he handled power/privilege. He basically thought in PoE 1 that "with great power comes great responsibili- I mean lots of room to abuse it". That is why he detested animancers: he saw them as powerful people (since they had the privilege of education) irresponsibly meddling with things they don't understand and hurting people who didn't have the same power in the process. And that is why turning away from the LK also involved him re-evaluating his stance on power and responsibility and in doing so, he started to prioritize autonomy instead. That is why at the end of PoE 1, Aloth voices concerns over the Watcher being put in the position of ending the Legacy: it messes with the Dyrwood's autonomy. Basically he goes from a person who thought power should be used responsibly to a person who outright rejects power.
And instead of expanding on that, Deadfire kinda just had him retrace the same steps but not kinda idk I'm rambling. Or at least it arrives to a similar conclusion. The final dilemma of his arc is whether he should keep up with his mission to hunt the LK (hold on to the power to change communities) or give up the mission (abdicate the power to change communities). Which on its own is kinda lazy already. But if you combine that with the fact that every time Aloth considers giving up on his mission, he sounds... self-defeatist??? As if it's just his insecurity talking and surely you, the player, should outright ignore it if you want to be supportive (or idk it kinda sounds like that to me). Which is just... ugh
Imagine how much more interesting Aloth's Deadfire story could've been, if the mindset Aloth had at the end PoE 1 was expanded and its flaws were explored. Imagine how different his timeskip story would've hit if the issue wasn't "well he just didn't understand the LK as much as he thought 🤷🏼‍♀️" and instead it was a conflict of his new moral code that valued autonomy above all else. Imagine if he could rationalize killing that mayor bc he saw his actions as removing obstacles for social change but he drew the line at guiding the village down a different path bc ✨aUtOnOmY✨. Imagine if his arc was centered around exploring where respecting people's autonomy ended and where toxic non-interference began.
It would've not only made Aloth a more thematically relevant character considering that the main plot with Eothas and the gods touch on similar ideas which is to say Deadfire Aloth already parallels Eothas in a way but you really need to squint to see that parallel it would've also added an interesting twist to his dynamic with the Watcher, regardless whether they're friends, frenemies or lovers.

Anon from yesterday back again! About the set-up, a post on twitter explained the theory much better and I gotta look up the name. The gist is that Phoenix could've proved that he was set up. He did not have the time to have a forgery done since he got the job for defending Zak only the day before. Plus the money. Instead, there is no evidence at all he even tried. Why? Because he'd seen the courts' corruption before and decided it didn't matter anymore, plus too dangerous.
(continued) You could even point at his reply to the Judge's words and wonder if Phoenix has nothing to say because he knows it's useless to argue. Hidden powers have already decided that they will attack him and try to drag him down.
okay, okay, hello again anon, good to see you back with another excellent ask.
I always think that there are two ways to look at Phoenix's disbarment:
a) that the problem was straight-up with bringing forged evidence into court, no matter what the circumstances were.
b) that the problem was that Phoenix was assumed to have created the forged evidence and bought it into court intentionally.
Ace Attorney really flips around on which of these is true in universe (it's a plot point to some extent in 1-5, 3-3, 4-1, and 4-4) but considering that Phoenix gets his badge back almost immediately after it's proved that the second wasn't the case, I'm going to assume that presenting forged evidence accidentally is either not an issue or less of an issue. This tends to be the fanon majority stance too. (It's worth noting that Edgeworth is implied to have pulled some strings irt getting Phoenix's badge back. Ymmv and so on.)
With our framework safely in place, the question arises: If Phoenix could have avoided punishment, or at least public shaming, by revealing the set-up, why wouldn't he? As you point out, the forgery doesn't make sense once you start to look into it and we know that Phoenix did put a lot of these pieces together. Hell, he could have made these arguments when Misham testified during the Gramarye trial. But he doesn't. (Warning: this is a more headcanon-y meta than my last one, because the 7yg is... a gap and we have very little concrete info on what the fuck Phoenix was up to. He got a kid, worked on jury trials, played good poker + bad piano, and had some sort of frenemyship with Kristoph. That's pretty much all we've got).
Firstly: Corruption. The AA court system is ridiculously corrupt, and at the point that Phoenix is disbarred, he becomes emblematic of this - he's a man with a history of revealing injustice - notably Von Karma & Gant, but even without them he still won some high profile cases - and once he's disbarred, it's implied that the narrative is flipped, turning him into a figurehead for that which he fought against (dark age of the law, etc). The obvious conclusion is that his disbarment was a convenient way to discredit him - powerful and corrupt figures (and in AA there are many) don't need to fear Phoenix Wright if he isn't a lawyer and his reputation is ruined. The counter argument is that Phoenix... has always done some questionable things with evidence (1-5, 2-4, and 3-3 stand out to me). But no more so than anyone else in this fucked-up universe. Either way, Phoenix has always worked in a system stacked against him, and it's very possible that he suspected there to be manoevering behind the scenes (and there was! We know Kristoph existed and was purposefully working against Phoenix.) HOWEVER, I don't believe that any of this would stop him on it's own, because it's been long established that Phoenix Wright does not give a shit about bad odds.
So, what would make him accept it? Anon, you mention danger in your ask, and I do see that as partially true - Phoenix isn't concerned about danger to himself, but he has a kid to care for. I would say, however, that especially when we come to Kristoph, as much of a bastard as he is, Phoenix had no evidence that he could be violent to the point of murder until 4-1. Before that, his influence was long-distance life ruining, rather than active threat (though long-distance life ruining is pretty scary on its own when you're raising a small child with low funds). I do see that as a cause, but one of many, and this is the point where I'd like to go back to the conversation on motivation.
I am going to make the argument here, as I did in the other answer, that Phoenix, in the 7yg and possibly elsewhere, is depressed, and that one symptom of that is a loss of motivation. It's implied by the game itself, and makes more sense than most of the alternatives.
Tumblr media
(I won't get too personal, but the years of my life where I dressed like this... not good years lol)
My headcanon has always been that by the point that Phoenix had sorted out his guardianship of Trucy and got himself out of that initial low that came from having his life ruined, it was too late to fix his disbarment and he had to change tracks, and that's when he became interested in MASON. (Not to self-promote, but I'm realising that a lot of what I've said here is rephrased ideas from The Path Once So Clear, so if you want 15,000-ish words on the subject, it's there). Of course, when talking about Phoenix's 7yg depression, I think it's also important to mention that Phoenix in AA4 is very much implied to be putting on an act (which is pretty common in AA4 in general. Most characters in that game have both a public and private face). Being 'Beanix' - eg. the piano/poker player with no prospects who works in a shitty restaurant and takes nothing seriously - is a convenient cover while he works on the things that he doesn't want to be targeted for (and here we come back to the corruption angle).
As to how far the depression helps that act... well, that could be a whole conversation on its own. Once again, I'm very much coming into headcanon here, but I'm reminded of the phenomenon where someone with depression will deliberately exacerbate it, either as a form of self-harm or as some attempt to fit a role (artists are especially prone, due to the 'depressed artist' stereotype. I see it most in the emo scene). Beanix has always seemed to me as someone who is deliberately messing up his own life - he repeatedly provokes Apollo, essentially sabotaging their relationship, he puts himself into dangerous situations for no real reason (this is a general Phoenix trait), and despite the fact that we KNOW Maya and Edgeworth were supportive of him during this period, we never actually see them around, presumably because he's keeping them at a distance. How much of this is for the act, and how much is real?
Again, we've come very much off topic (whoops) but I see a lot of this as another aspect of Phoenix's low self worth - is there a difference between the image he projects of a man who has given up due to being disbarred, and the real Phoenix who is still actively working behind the scenes but is very obviously not doing well because he can't 'save people' - the thing which so much of his identity relies upon? I think there is, but I also think the image too often becomes the reality, and AA4 does carry this underlying theme of how wearing these masks of a public persona can affect your 'true self'.
As always, I genuinely love to see other people's takes on this, either in the tags, in reblogs, or via asks. This one is very headcanon-y, and I know there some entirely different perspectives out there, some of which I really like. (Also this one got to be heavy. Look after yourselves guys.)

Uncomfortable close-up to their Valentine Newlywed answers
Since Rhett was a tad reluctant to compliment Link sincerely I decided to use my psychoanalytical skills (anyway whatever) and seek the underlying honest answers they wanted to give. This could be a bit much at times and perhaps you shouldn't read if you are not a Rhink shipper, that's why I used a cut.
Tumblr media
"What he loves about me" Link's expression is a little confusing - maybe an attempt at doubt or self-deprecation but it looks to me more like the embarrassment of the blushing bride.
"I love your..."

Who wants to bet that the first thing that came to Rhett's mind was ass but then he changed it to the first word that came to his mind after ass? A-ccent. Like, there's just no case accent was the first thing he thought because Link's accent isn't even that strong at this point. When Link got surprised at that, Rhett simply replied that he was trying to find something funny. But even so, like I said earlier, Rhett does love Link's accent. I am sure he is fond of it, he finds it adorable. And let's not forget he said "there was so much he could choose from"!
Tumblr media
Link looks disappointed that it's not his guess, his eyes. An interesting thing here is that although he used a personality trait for Rhett, he expected / hoped for this physical trait for himself. But don't feel sorry - Rhett has talked about his baby blues and has even gone to the ridiculous extents of planning to make a blog exclusively for Link's eyes. So don't worry; it is known that Rhett at least acknowledges the beauty of Link's eyes. At least. And Link was expecting this from a place of knowledge and not as an attempt to be silly-sappy.
Things Rhett thinks Link loves about him:
voice (Link will later say he loves his laugh and this is close, he's also enchanted every time Rhett sings so...)
height (Link once said he is attracted to "people of extreme heights")
hair (we know that)
beard (lie detector test)
giving spirit (lol totally)
creativity (they've talked about this many times)
eyebrows (if Link has said he likes Rhett's eyelashes then liking his eyebrows is certain)
Rhett was guessing from a place of knowledge too.
Rhett then said he loves stories of Link's grandma doing weird things with him and I don't like being the weirdo to spell out the weird thing but Rhett's interest in that is vaguely associated to his weird mind being always in the gutter. I don't mean it turns him on of course but he loves hearing weird stuff that border on creepy. You know it's true. Sometimes he's like that. Link took revenge for the accent joke with the psoriasis.
Tumblr media
Wow we saw some Rhett teeth. Link answered sincerely with a super cute "I love your laugh" but Rhett just said "I love the sound your mouth makes when you don't chew". Oh well. Link regretted being sincere and Rhett, after some good laughter, defended himself by saying "he (Link) walked himself into it". This makes exactly zero sense and I am wondering whether he meant Link walked himself into it by choosing the vulnerable / sincere way. Or if he just didn't know what he was talking about.
Rhett then asks for the next answer to be complimentary. He then repeats he has strong feelings about Link's accent. Again, I believe this! In a positive light. IDK, I do believe this. Link said he has strong positive feelings for Rhett's car which I found weird like Rhett because I thought it was established Link has the better car of the two. Who knows, maybe he lied about the positive thing. Unless he connects it in his mind with memories / experiences.
Link's guess a little later:
Link: If I wanted to, I could easily... start over.
Rhett: Start over?! Like, whole life?
L: ...Yeah, just like, get a re-do.
R: Huh.
L: And I would be like "Really? How?"
R: Mmkay. I said "If you wanted to, you could easily kill me".
Okay, this gets a little deeper. I think what initially Link meant was a joke about starting over regarding his relationship with Rhett. Rhett didn't get that and asked him if he meant his whole life. Link considered that "mmyeah..." and realised it wasn't that far off from what he meant, all jokes aside. Link does wish he could start over and redo many things in his life. This surely has A LOT to do with their religious upbringing. And maybe how it affected Link's choices. Stevie's laughter is so out of place sometimes. Rhett does not laugh and tries to rush this moment. Rhett's answer about Link killing him is not exactly weird or offensive or mean as I saw some people consider it. It shows, maybe subconsiously, several things; Link's intensity, Rhett's pliable nature especially to Link and it might be more indicative of how Rhett feels about Link than anything else, at least in this video.
And then, out of nowhere, or maybe so it seems to us, Rhett goes ballistic against everyone. He starts complaining about those complaining when they didn't give each other heartfelt compliments. Link joked he agrees with them. Rhett attempted to let this slip although it angered him. The crew laughed with Link's joke, meaning they kinda sided with him, and Rhett turned basically mad at Link.
Tumblr media
He accused Link that he did the same that day and Link entirely deflected the conversation. All I'm gonna say is that don't think they don't communicate with each other about how they approach certain situations. I wonder if at times they misunderstand each other or one changes opinion suddenly and leaves the other hanging. Link tries to stop Rhett from going on but Rhett is unstoppable at this point.
Tumblr media
You might say Rhett was straight out mean right there and I sure was like "whoa where did this all come from, man" but mean is not a reasonable explanation. He was angry and his words show he is in a pressured state. Unless you tend to have mood swings, which Rhett doesn't really have as far as I know, you don't go from all cutesy and mischievous to furious in milliseconds. Except if there is an underlying suppressed cause. And you may ask, okay does he feel pressured to say a compliment to Link? Is this such a big deal? Well, yes and no. I don't think Rhett meant "we're not gonna hold hands" or "compliment each other" when we ask it. I think we know what he means. I think he's talking about the - well, in his words - elephant in the room. The actually serious consideration that there is something more there. The expectation that it might get revealed at any point - whether intentionally or unintentionally. Rhett loses control at that moment, which is why Link, who knows him well, warns him to not go there but Rhett still does. And again, you might say: well, no fan asked them to kiss or to confirm anything! We asked them simple stuff that can be normal between platonic friends too. Yes, but there is something we don't take often into account. The mythical crew. The mythical crew are actually the ones who monitor closely what the fans believe, want and prefer to watch. This means that the crew has to inform and discuss with Rhett and Link how much they are gonna please the audience and in what ways. Which means that a crew of 50+ people have an elaborate opinion on what fans think of Rhett and Link's relationship (next to their own opinion of course) and this has to be communicated with them face to face. In short, Rhett and Link have their privacy invaded not only by the fans but by their employees and, moreover, they are forced to always have fun with it and take it lightly. Again, you could think: well, they could forbid any rhink reference to the crew from now on. And you would think this WOULDN'T make the crew MORE suspicious at this point? All I am saying, they are fine when they make rhink insinuations / jokes voluntarily but most of the time is forced upon them by both the fans and employees and this can be uncomfortable at best if they are just friends or tyrannical if there is something more there that they still keep for themselves. So, Rhett's frustration comes from a deeper place than being expected to give a compliment. If I were in their place as I imagine it (I could always be entirely wrong) I would feel like a muppet trying to balance all my reactions towards thousands of people, with several dozens of them being paid by me to scrutinize me and order me how exactly to act!
There is a cut following Rhett's vent and you can see that Rhett is trying to calm himself down.
Tumblr media
He speaks to himself, mumbling "yeah alright yeah ok ok" and by the expressions I can tell he acknowledges he lost control. That doesn't mean he regretted what he said - just that he said more than it benefits him to say and apparently he said a lot more in the unedited video. Kudos then to Link, who actively tries to calm his friend down and make him feel more comfortable.
Tumblr media
This might be unpleasant to some but from his stance I conclude that Link agrees with Rhett or at least understands him. He was just wise enough to not say it out loud. Link first warned Rhett to not speak and then stayed quiet as Rhett was venting. After the cut, we see him trying to help Rhett calm down and relax and he characteristically invites Rhett to focus his attention on him and find something he really loves about him. This is not a complaint - Link is smiling and is warm to Rhett. What he essentially does is trying to help Rhett forget he is being watched by thousands and his every word is weighted, which of course is Rhett's main problem. He just says "forget about them and focus on me and just say something you love, it's all good". I just love Link here. He's supportive and caring.
The next question is what Link loves when Rhett blanks his blank and Rhett is trying to picture it-
Tumblr media
I have no doubt Link loves that. The ear thumbing, I mean.
So, then I am adding the stills that redeemed Rhett in the fandom:
Tumblr media
But not to be that person, it's obvious that Rhett plays it up a ridiculous lot. And not even to appease the angry fans but probably to make fun of their anger. That's why Link laughs with his face and his answer "I love remembering the time we met".
This doesn't interest me at all. Instead, I am much more interested in Link's nonsensical answer "I love remembering the time we died" because what?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Link tends to say occasionally stuff that doesn't make sense but I don't think he would pass on the chance to say something even remotely meaningful in an opportunity like this and especially regarding his relationship with Rhett. Link clarifies: "...when we died. This is heaven". There are two possibilities and only two: a) this makes ZERO sense and it's the worst and most pointless joke ever and b) this is symbolic or something only Rhett could understand. Rhett does not dismiss this as stupid or silly with his usual done look. He asks questions about it and they discuss at length about how it happened that they died and why they went to heaven since it seems they killed each other. Well, it's because they killed each other in the exact same time with a prod-like tool and they escaped Good Ol' God's (in Link's words) notice. Okay. I'm just leaving this here and you can all draw your own conclusions. Personally, I am torn between a symbolical death and rebirth when they left their religious selves behind and death being used as a well known old metaphor of a certain physical state. It would work even more if it was both. Or Link was just talking nonsense. Let's not exclude that. So yeah. That's all I had to say................

The Astrological Signs of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" characters
Part 1 - Team Avatar
Tumblr media
♎ Aang - Libra
Libra is an air sign and Aang is an airbender. More than that, though, Libra (represented by the scales) is the sign of harmony and balance. As the Avatar, restoring and maintaining balance is Aang's primary duty. Aside from all that symbolism though, Aang's personality is a lot like a Libra.
Libra is the opposite compliment to Aries, a war sign. Libra don't really like discord (at least, they don't like to be IN the discord and chaos). They're lovers, not fighters, so they tend to be peacekeepers. This is Aang to a T. Aang is not only one of the youngest characters in the show (and therefore, the most likely to be uncomfortable with violence), but he is also a monk, raised by other peaceful monks.
He values peace and all life. Even his fighting styles are evasive and are more about using an opponent's strength against them, rather than attacking. It's something that is brought up in the Book 2 episode "Bitter Work", when Aang has trouble learning earthbending from Toph. Libras (depending on the rest of their chart, of course) often tend to respond to conflict in a similar manner, by being avoidant.
You see the pacifist in Aang anytime he needs to mediate a conflict. Examples include "The Great Divide" in Book 1, where Aang has to mediate between the two tribes (as well as Sokka and Katara). He does so by telling them that "Harsh words won't solve anything. Action will". Of course, when that doesn't work, he just lies and makes up the alternative story of WeiJin and JinWei. I don't think Aang is a big fan of lies, but it was for the sake of peace, a means to an end. Very Libra.
Another thing that makes Aang a Libra is the fact that 1) Libra is ruled by Venus and 2) Libra rules the 7th house, which is essentially relationships. Aang's relationships (platonic and romantic) mean EVERYTHING to him, and there's a reason why putting one of his loved ones in danger is initially the only way to activate the Avatar state. He's a very friendly, charming and loving kid (like most Libras) and he's the first one from team Avatar who believes they can make it through the secret tunnel, because of how strongly he believes in his love for Katara. The final point is Aang's reluctance (or sometimes downright refusal) to cause harm to others unless absolutely necessary. While others use violence, Aang is more likely to want to befriend his enemies, and that's actually a good thing. It's Libra's superpower.

♋ Katara - Cancer
Cancer is a water sign that is ruled by the moon, and Katara is a (very powerful) waterbender who draws her powers from the moon. In astrology, water signs are known for being on the emotional side. And with Cancer's ruling planet being the moon (the planet of emotions and also the celestial body that pushes and pulls the tides), Cancers are known to be so emotional, that they're often just archetyped by it. Katara is similarly emotional (see the Book 3 episode "Ember Island Players"). However, Katara being so in touch with her emotions also makes her extremely emotionally intelligent. Like Cancers and most other water signs, her heightened sensitivity allows her to almost psychically sense how others are feeling, and to know how exactly to respond to and comfort them. There's a reason why Katara has such great chemistry (when it comes to her one-on-one conversations) with so many people (Aang, Haru, Jet, Zuko, Toph). Her emotional intelligence also makes her very mature for her age and allow her to see things clearer than others, or to foresee things that others don't.
Cancers are often either family oriented, or they love and value their home (this can either be their childhood home, current home, or the city, country or culture that they came from). This applies with Katara. As a waterbender, being from the water tribes is a big part of who she is, and she has a deep love for her culture. We see how being the only waterbender in the South Pole and having no one to show her the ways of waterbending saddens her, and how happy she is to hear that Hama is willing to teach her (the only other waterbender from the Southern water tribes that Katara has ever met).
With regards to Katara being mature for her age, she's also very motherly. The Book 3 episode "The Runaway" (as well as most of her interactions with Toph) demonstrates this. The moon (which rules Cancer) is The Mother in astrology, and so most Cancers have a significant relationship with motherhood. Katara was very close to her late mother and her death still affects her.
Following the death of her mother, Katara has basically had to become everyone else's mother and hold things together. You see this as well (in a more positive light) in the Book 2 episode "The Desert". In this episode, Appa is missing, Aang is too upset to think or act clearly, Toph can't see properly because of the sand and Sokka is high off cactus juice. Katara is the one that is keeping everything together in this episode.
On the downside, Katara's mothering can turn to nagging sometimes, but I don't blame her. She's a child that's had to grow up way too fast. She has a lot of pressure on her. With water, that pressure can build up, until it bursts like a dam wall (which it's likely to do). It's the combination of this, as well as Katara's strong and fearless sense of right and wrong that lead to those cataclysmic outbursts that both Katara and water signs are sometimes known for.

♋♐Sokka - Cancer sun, but with a lot of Sagittarius aspects in the birth chart
Okay, let's start with the Sagittarius side of things. There are a lot of elements of the Sag personality in Sokka. For one thing, luck. Not only does he manage to survive (and thrive) in the entire series WITHOUT any bending powers, but that boomerang ALWAYS comes back! That's some Jupiter-luck energy if I've ever seen it.
Sokka was originally going to be a more serious character, but the voice actor decided to improvise and add some of his own humor to the role, which created the Sokka that we know and love now. I mention this because the voice actor (Jack De Sena) is a Sagittarius. Sokka has the kind of personality that provides humor in difficult times and can lighten up the sometimes very heavy atmosphere in the group. He doesn't just make people laugh, he likes to laugh as well (at his own jokes and even at his enemy's jokes). In the book 3 episode "The Ember Island Players", heeven goes to the effort of getting Suki to sneak him backstage, so he could give the actor playing himself some tips and extra jokes (and low and behold, the crowd actually laughs at them). In his words, he's "just a guy who loves comedy". In fact, I think he's one of the only ones there who just decides to kick his feet up and enjoy the show (by basically turning the situation into a date night for him and Suki). Sagittarians love to laugh and make people laugh. They're optimists who like to have a good time, and are likely to be the make-lemonade-out-of-lemons type.
He's also one of the smartest and most competent characters on the show. He has excellent problem solving skills, and isn't afraid to look at things through a different angle and try new things to expand his worldview and knowledge. This is relevant, as Sag rules the 9th house which includes, amoung other things, higher learning, truth and knowledge. He can be a bit tactless and insensitive...a little slick at the mouth, but it's largely ignored by others, as he is likeable and funny enough for others to let it go. That's quite a Sag trait.
The Cancerian part of Sokka's personality is less pronounced, but it's there. He's VERY protective of his loved ones, even before the situation with Princess Yue. He is family oriented in that he admires his dad and the traditions and customs of the water tribes. He loves and is just as proud of his culture and home life as Katara is, but just in a different way. He also always looks out for the other members of team Avatar. He can tell when a member of the team needs support and immediately jumps to action (for example, the way he immediately grabs Toph's hand to guide her in "The Serpent's Pass", in "The Desert" and on the air ships during the final battle in the series finale). He's also very loving and protective of his sister, despite how often they fight. Also, quiet as it's kept, Cancers are one of the funniest signs in the zodiac.

♉♈Toph - Taurus sun, but with a lot of Aries aspects in the birth chart
Let's start with the Taurus aspects. Taurus is not just an earth sign, it's FIXED earth. It embodies the firm stance and hardheadness of not just Toph, but earthbenders in general. Tauruses are very stubborn and like to do things their own way at their own pace. Combine that with the independence and confrontational nature of an Aries, and you've got Toph.
Aries value their independence, sometimes to the point of being selfish, which is what we get with Toph in the Book 2 episode "The Chase". In this episode, it's Toph's first time riding with the group, but it's also her first taste of freedom. Like an Aries, she hates the idea of seeming weak or helpless, and has to learn that freedom doesn't mean that she has to do everything alone.
As Toph shows us, there is, however, power and strength in valuing independence, so long as you're not insecure about independence or projecting. Toph is a wealthy, sheltered child who is blind, which, in most cases, would make her vulnerable. But it's not the case. Toph ran away once before when she was little, and that's where she learned earthbending from the giant blind moles. She learned earthbending not just as a martial art, but as an extension of herself and her senses, and as a way to see. She would have never been able to master doing that (nor would shehave gone on to do even greater things like train the avatar and discover metal bending), if she didn't have the will, bravery and self assurance to run away in the first place. That little pilgrimage (her life changing adventure, if you will...but still not with Zuko, I'm afraid😔) showed the value of independence. Of going out on your own journey of self-discovery. Much like how Zuko needed to be be alone for a while during Book 2 for his own journey of self-discovery.
Tumblr media
Oh, speaking of "Zuko Alone"...
Tumblr media
♈Zuko - Aries
Zuko's arc in the show shows us the transition from a dark-sided, low vibrational Aries, to a high-vibrational Aries at it's best: passionate, brave, protective, strong, innovative, a good leader, driven, energetic and independent. Zuko embodies many Aries (and general fire sign) traits, both good and bad. He can be impulsive, and doesn't always think things all the way through. Aries is cardinal fire, so it's about getting up and going, just DOING something. Zuko is known for never giving up. These are things that that Iroh, Sokka and Ursa have mentioned. Zuko is an impatient person and is very fiery, hot headed and reactionary even for a firebender.
His reactionary nature makes him prone to a bit of melodrama (and I imagine that's why it's so fun for Azula or even Iroh to get a rise out of him). This is definitely the case with Aries. They're not the only sign with a temper, but they are the most likey to cause a scene and storm off in a huff about it. Or challenge you to a fight. Zuko can't refuse a fight for the life of him. At least not until he evolves and figures out his ✨true destiny✨.
One the other hand, he also keeps that same fiery energy when it comes to defending those who can't defend themselves and fighting for what he believes is right. In these cases, he refuses to back down. Even if his chances of winning are low, he'll still keep pushing forward. That's the will, energy and drive of cardinal fire. Zuko just needs to chanel all that power into something useful and constructive, like creating change for the greater good, and not distraction. Like with fire in general, Aries (and Zuko) is useful and powerful, but requires direction, guidance and purpose, so as to not risk letting the fire run wild to cause destruction and devastation.

Have you read/seen The Jane Austen Book Club? I read it for school and I really quite enjoyed it, but when I went back to, like, analyze it I realised I didn't remember any of the plot, and mostly what I remembered was just reading other people's interpretations of Austen (which is also why I read this blog, lol). So have you read this particular Austen-inspired story, and if so, what did you think of it? Also, if I enjoyed it what else should I try, Lost in Austen or Austenland or...?
I’ve seen the film, but not read the book. (Likewise for Austenland.) The two films and the miniseries all comment to a certain degree on the culture of reading and adapting and appreciating Austen, but all in very different ways, so it depends on what you’re looking for. (Spoilers below!)
The Jane Austen Book Club (at least in the film,) has some jokes about Austen, but is very much rooted in the real world and ultimately an ensemble dramedy which weaves allusions to Austen’s characters and narrative into the personal lives of each of the individuals involved in this titular book club as a means of bringing very different people into contact with one another and providing a common-ish thread to connect them and their experiences.
But as this is arguably a more conventional ensemble piece there’s much more to compare when looking at Austenland and Lost in Austen: a woman, dissatisfied with modern living, indulges in escapism with varying degrees of extreme immersion in the world of the Regency and her encounters there prompt her to examine the direction she wants her own life to take in true heroine style. Ends up smooching a reticent and conventionally-attractive white man which indicates she has found fulfillment, at last.
Lost in Austen runs more along the lines of magic-realism and trends towards the humour in its situational conflicts rather than trying to justify plot-twists and character-choices. Love conquers all in the end, I suppose, but for myself I wasn’t able to entirely applaud the end of Amanda’s arc, because to me it felt hollow. My suspension of disbelief didn’t go far enough to allow me to feel it was right or good that Amanda would give up everything in her ‘old’ life for the Great Love she’s always idealized in literature. It all feels too good to be true, and I feel like a reasonable woman would question that...and possibly her sanity, given the meta-commentary on the blending of ‘fictional’ history and modern ‘reality’. I know there isn’t enough time to explain how or why any of this is happening, and so it’s all handwaved and people just accept it and move forward with the hijinks and fun, which...okay. It’s a lark. A merry romp through literature.
But then...Amanda decides to stay. I don’t know what she’s leaving behind--of course we’re shown that she isn’t satisfied with her job and her friends and romantic interests don’t respect her in the way she wants to be respected. But does she have any family? Any friends besides her roommate who is implied to be kind of a shitty person because she’s just enjoying life in her own way and not out to find a Rich Man and Settle Down? The thing about shitty jobs and friends and boyfriends is...you can leave them. You can find something new. And as this blog rather proves, there are plenty of folks to bond with over Jane Austen, if that’s what’ll fill the gaping hole in your life.
So, okay, Amanda’s all-time fave happens to fall for her and it’s amazing and her weird-ass dream about a fictional man is coming true. So...she decides she wants to ride this train for however long she can and just...be Mrs. Darcy? Mr. Darcy seems nice and all, and I’ve never been in love enough to want to marry somebody so maybe I don’t know shit, but my cynical inner monologue would have zero chill at the prospect of living permanently in a time with no suffrage or antibiotics. Even if one would be living at Pemberley and married to Mr. Darcy. With no birth control. Or germ theory. Amanda’s in control of her hair--great--what about her uterus? Lost in Austen, in the end, leans a little too heavily on the necessary suspension of disbelief in all this and just ends up snapping me back into an uncomfortable place with a lot of questions as to why they feel True Love is all an ending needs to justify it. Perhaps I’m expecting too much of a four-parter that wants to skew rom-com-fantasy rather than question the conflicts between the position of women in the past and the present as well as examining the romantic glorification of era which, despite their Aesthetic, were deeply entrenched in patriarchy and a toxic class system.
I know I’m over-thinking it, and there were things I definitely enjoyed about Lost in Austen once I just...let all that shit go; but there’s also a reason I haven’t felt the need to go back and watch it again and again.
Austenland kind of falls somewhere between the other two, I find. There’s no attempt to drag things into a complicated morass of Which Reality is Superior if Indeed Both Even Truly Exist--it’s like Lost in Austen got given a grounding which helped to take the pressure off justifying anything and just let the fun bits happen without sweating too much over how. Of course there’s an Austenized recreational hotel experience somewhat in the style of those murder mystery parties where everyone takes on a character to play. Of course there is. Done. Moving on. The comedy of a modern woman pining for The Gracious Past is allowed to unspool when she gets the chance to Live It (albeit in a comedic, ever-so-slightly-wrong way that totally feels plastic and even a bit cheap, but that’s part of the fun--during the first dinner scene just pause it on the wide shots and take a look at the prop food on the table, it’s a SCREAM,) and through this discovers that what she had idealized was not all she had cracked it up to be, in her mind, but that the stuff she still truly loves about it aren’t things that are lost to her, in the modern day. The character of Jane has this growth arc where she stops trying to fill her dissatisfaction with her life with fictional ideals, and forces her to really consider what she wants and to go after it. It’s bittersweet, because we know what all the Austen stuff means to her. It’s hard to put away those dreams, but she knows it’ll be worthwhile. And she has the support-network which Amanda lacks--her friend is, again, bemused by her Austen obsession, but ultimately supportive. Jane has to deal with gross modern dudes, but then...there are gross dudes in the ‘past’, too. Gross dudes are everywhere, is my point.
So Amanda and Jane both find the romantic wish-fulfillment they’re looking for, in the end; but apart from the messiness of Lost in Austen’s blurry stance on what the fuck is going on with spacetime and fiction, exactly, Jane has an arc, which Amanda does not. Things happen to Amanda. I remember watching and being entirely shocked when Darcy declares his love for her...maybe this is supposed to be a shock twist much like Darcy’s proposal to Amanda is a shock twist, because he’s supposed to loathe her for her weird ways like he supposedly loathed Lizzy for her low connections and ridiculous family...but here’s the thing...Amanda Price is not Elizabeth Bennet. It’s like all the writers took away from the dynamic was that Darcy loved Elizabeth because she was Different, and therefore Any Different Girl Will Do. Which...eeeeeeeh, no. Not exactly.
Darcy’s tortured avowal of his love feels like a Thing That is Happening to Amanda, not something which is occurring naturally due to clear signs of accord between Darcy and Amanda’s characters. Even Austen gives us some hints from almost the beginning of their acquaintance that Darcy wasn’t entirely cold towards Elizabeth--but Elizabeth certainly perceived him to be so. His proposal is a surprise to HER, but not to us as readers. When the plot-twist of Darcy’s feelings for Amanda are as much a shock to the audience as they are to the protagonist it’s...kind of cheap and out of left-field. It’s a bold move to try and write an original character who is literally there to take the place of Elizabeth Bennet, so Lost in Austen hasn’t made things easy for themselves by any means by dropping their girl in the midst of these iconic characters and situations, and I guess I applaud them for trying, but...eeeeeh, no.
Amanda is trying to be everything and nothing. She’s the Everywoman the audience can project itself onto, and so she has very few defining character traits to help her drive her own story. She’s an exercise in meta, which is fun and has its positives, but doesn’t result in a cohesive and compelling narrative arc anywhere near to the original Elizabeth Bennet’s. Amanda Price is the Bella Swan of an Austen fanfic come to life. Jane of Austenland is...well, very much like that, too, only she spends more time grappling with questions about what she’s looking for in her life and why, rather than “lol Darcy is casually racist on a London bus” (I appreciate that they tried to address that, except they didn’t address it so much as make a YIKES face and move on.) Lost in Austen becomes a pile of gimmicks and meta-moments with one woman along for the ride and romantic reward at the end rather than Austenland’s woman who is in a more toned-down variation of the same situation confronting the unsatisfying stasis of her adult life and realizing she’ll have to make some proactive choices, including leaving behind unhelpful aspects of her idealism and escapist fantasies in order to forge something with deeper meaning for herself.
Basically, sure, there’s things to enjoy in Lost in Austen and Austenland; but for my money, Austenland is the worthier and more well-executed story, especially when compared against similar elements in Lost in Austen, where the pursuit of meta-jokes overwhelms any attempt to actually give us characters to care about in a world which is too eager to dismiss realistic concerns and issues.
