People in the comments of the Assassin's Creed: Shadows trailer becoming armchair historians trying to explain why Yasuke shouldn't be a protagonist actually are hilarious. Like besties this is a franchise where people can control eagles with their minds and a good 5% of the population are descended from evil psychic aliens. I THINK we can expand on a story of Japan's only-recorded African koshō without it jumping the shark.

I kind of hate how ridiculously hostile people get when someone mentions historical accuracy in period set media.

Like people will dogpile and mock you for having the audacity to actually want accurate clothing/culture/architecture etc.

“Who cares about historical accuracy if the story is good?” Idk sometimes historical accuracy actually allows for a much more interesting story than just slotting in the generic theme park version of your setting; plus period media that actually gives a shit about where and when it takes place is frustratingly rare (especially for video games).

Like, the way AC Odyssey and RDR2 meticulously recreate the look and feel of the eras they’re set in is legit astounding. It absolutely does make the games better.

Roxas: Had the Halloween town kids throw bombs in his face for multiple missions in a row before finally breaking down and smacking them around a bit.

Ventus: The dwarves were rude and refused to talk to him, immediately resorted to chasing them down and whacking them.

Characterization I see frequently: Ah, yes, Roxas is the one always willing to throw hands and Ventus is a smol sunshine boy.

#kh #kingdom hearts #these are really silly examples but the point stands!#in fact I think it expands when you look at their full screen-time #I am once again begging people to watch a full let's play of Days #don't get me wrong Ventus IS brightness and sunshine #but he also has the energy of a chihuahua ready to fight the world and I will stand by that #where as Roxas will tend to just try to avoid it until he Very Much Can't #now I think Roxas does BITTERNESS better than Ventus or Sora #but bitterness is not temper #in fact bitterness is usually negative emotions left on the backburner until the resentment caves in on itself #I suppose this is up to interpretation but from my reading...#a lot of times Ventus seems to burn out his anger then let it go #whereas Roxas doesn't do anything with the emotions until he/the situation self-destructs catastrophically so it ends up being nastier #but on the day-to-day?#yeah no Ventus is going to be the one reacting first #you can also exchange Sora for Ventus for some of these arguments #though I think he lands somewhere between Ventus and Roxas for short-temperedness #all this is more complicated than this reductive commentary of course #you have to take in how and in what orders the characters were introduced and marketed #the difficulty of getting the handheld games historically and the biases that set in before they were easily accessed #not to mention stock archetypes for fandom joke set-ups that then perpetuate the characterization...#like there's a LOT to how this came to be #but it Gets To Me sometimes #yza talks about a thing

Ok it only exists as an outline and it’s definitely a loose AU. But I’m imagining something very sweeping and historical and angsty. Paul as the wealthy Kiera Knightly character and John as the servent. And Mike (younger in this AU) sees something in the library and misinterprets it. The set up would be similar but from there it would be pretty different, with Paul eventually joining the army to try to find John. I’m also leaning toward a happy ending with lots of angst in between. Thinking of setting it in WW1 instead of 2 but not sure.

Guys, please, Tango doesn't consider himself a builder in the same way Michelangelo might not consider himself a painter* (see tags). You can accept you're very good at two things, and still consider yourself better at one over the other. It's not negative talk when he calls himself a redstone guy.

#tangotek #* Michelangelo was definitely good at painting but his preference was sculpture. Painting commissions were more frequent and profitable.#I don't know if this is the best example because it's difficult to parse exaggeration and fact #About historical figures in general especially artists and their personal feelings about their own art #and he definitely wouldn't have put a very strong divide between his skill sets because like.#You can see how much working and studying 3D space helped him create such life-like people in a 2D painting.#But I think Decked Out is a good example of harmony of skills too #The building part of game design and the coding part needed each other to create Decked Out 2 #My point here is #That we can't ask Michaelangelo if he considers himself a sculptor or painter #Because he's dead and also may not have an actual answer himself #But we can ask Tango! And he says he's a redstoner not a builder. I think my favorite comparison of Ishin characters with their real life counterparts is Ernest Satow. Yeah, he was a real person. Thing is, in real life, in the time the game takes place the actual Ernest Satow was 24.
