So in Spirit World there's two separate panels that show Cass' family/loved ones. The first I think is more circulated:

The second is this one:

These line-ups are probably different due to space/convenience, but to overanalyse these panels for a bit, it's interesting who's present in which. Bruce, Steph, and Babs are present in both - makes sense, they're the most important figures in Cass' life. Steph is front and center in both, suggesting she really is Cass' favourite person ever.

Bruce is relatively big in the top panel, but much smaller in the bottom. The top panel explicitly is about "family," while the bottom is about people who "know and love you". Bruce becoming smaller suggests that Cass thinks of him as her dad, but the 'knowing' and 'loving' part isn't as secure for her. (This is probably not intentional but reflects their dynamic very well, particularly post-Cass being sent to HK and her unresolved feelings about that).

Babs is pretty big in both, and I love that she's Oracle here (the wheelchair in the bottom panel!!). This makes total sense - the time when Babs loved and cared for her most was when she was Oracle. Cass probably still sees and remembers her that way.

Onto the interesting stuff, which is Duke being missing for 'family' but present for 'know and love you'. I think he should be in the top panel, but maybe he's too new for Cass to consider him family? Everyone in the top panel is from the bg 2000 era, so Cass might think of that time as her true 'family'. Anyway, the fact he makes it into the bottom still shows they're close, and that Cass considers him someone who understands/'knows' her.

Dick and Tim being present for 'family' and missing for 'know and love you' is so fun. Tim maybe should be present in the bottom, but recent canon hasn't made them as close as they used to be (in BG 2000 and Red Robin). So they love each other, but not to the extent of anyone in the bottom panel; he's still definitively family though.

Dick is the same, but there's a lot more sibling rivalry and complicated feelings there. It makes total sense for Cass to see him as a brother, but to not think he 'knows' or 'loves' her all that much; they do get along, but I think they remember their mistakes with each other and think the other person still holds a grudge (they don't). Peak Dick-Cass dynamic to me!

So if I had to rank Cass' favourite people in the Batfam according to these panels, it'd be: 1. Steph 2. Babs 3. Bruce 4. Tim and/or Duke 5. Dick

Four examples but each person has a team they fall under and depending on what the team specializes in is what they'll mostly use as well as comfort levels. There's the usual that everyone carries which is a uniform (unless they're going in more "casual" or in "civvies"), pads, vests, appropriate footwear, communication devices, gadgets depend on the assignment and so on.

Loke: he can use any weapon. Any. He's stupid levels of good with them, scary levels of fast and accurate. He's the counter-sniper and can snipe (bolt action being his preference) as well but that's a role that's more specialized and doesn't often come up. He's the second best sniper in all of Oracle but this role comes up only when Trevor isn't available. Most of the time tho, you'll see him with ARs. His favorites are the AKs, that AR plus him being a combat medic means he has a lot more equipment on him for treating both non-humans and humans. He'll also carry a wide range of blades. He prefers flashbangs to smoke grenades. Aside from all of that he can conjure a two-headed axe as well as a bow with unlimited arrows that he can enchant.

Jelani: Jelani's all about ARs and has a soft spot for carbines. His favorite AR is the HK G36. He carries a backup Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0. I think those come with a metal frame as well but he prefers polymer. Yeah, there's the issue with the recoil but he knows what he's doing and can control that. Not a fan of any type of grenade but if needed will use them. He can also conjure a weapon but unlike berserkers he can change the shape of it despite his age and most of the time it's a type of glaive or a saex. But because dampeners are a thing he'll have backup knives. On super rare occasions he'll use a sniper though he isn't a fan.

Trevor: he's the resident sniper, in fact, he taught Loke all he knows. The best sniper Oracle has and proud owner of the world's longest confirmed kill to date (every time that record is broken irl I up Trevor's record lmao). He's often seen with the Accuracy International AXSR (bolt action, always has to be bolt action). As a backup he has a Glock that he's customized completely. As a werewolf he has use of his claws and fangs for flankers. Likes to pack smoke grenades.

Angelus: he likes rushing down targets and does a lot of flanking and in situations where either Loke or Trevor are sniping he likes to keep close around them to keep them safe from flankers and rushers. Given that he likes to move around a lot he prefers a lighter loadout. Sub-machine guns and PDWs for him. MP4, MP5SD, MP7, and so on. His very favorites though are the FN P90 and the Kriss Vector CRB. He carries arcane weapons such as an infamous blade he uses to buff his arcane abilities and his own offensive arcane abilities as well. Just like Trevor he's a werewolf and can rely on claws and fangs.

David still has some complicated and unresolved feelings about her, which colors his relationships going forward. So I actually love combat in these games, lol, but I do have specific enemies that I just loathe encountering and specific encounters that are just trash.

The stuff with the woundwyrm is just not fun no matter how much you prebuff. Getting caught on the openworld map and all you can do is run around until she flies away and hope no one dies just sucks. Threshold is just terrible at the end with all the gallu stormcallers. Vavakias in general are horrible enemies that pierce through fear resistance?!

Still, I love when a custom build just comes together. I'm playing on Challenging right now and the early levels are wrecking my shit but I'm pushing through. Feels like solving an ultimate puzzle.

My ideal party!

Minovae: Fighter 20/ HK 4/ Bard 16. Shield bash based two-weapon fighter with ridiculous AC, a gazillion attacks, and her bard song to keep her friends up and fighting. LOTS of teamwork feats to wreck house with her beloved.

Regill: HK 2-3/Fighter rest of the way. Depends on how I'm feeling for the specific build. Regardless he's full armor feats, dex to attack and damage hooked hammer for a million attacks. LOTs of teamwork feats for the same reasons above!

Nenio: Wizard 10/Loremaster 10. Fully into maxed out illusion school DCs and spell favoritism on Weird and Phantasmal killer. Mythic feats buffing the shadow schools since they're evocation/conjuration but count as Illusion and thus used her maxed DCs.

Daeran: Oracle 20. No reason to multiclass him he's VERY good as is. Give him extra mystery of Bones for Bone Armor to make him tougher, focus on Conjuration and Necromancy. Ultimate undead slayer (that map with all the Bodaks on it? Or the room with Kestoglyr? DESTROYED), and also some juicy extra damage from some of the offensive necromancy spells and saves. You can lean a little into summons too with this if you like!

Arueshalae: Skald 20. Yes I use the respec mod on her, but skald fully fits her personality and story and being able to give all of my martials Pounce is so amazingly strong and hilarious. Mostly focused on buffing and rage songs. Give her Sense Vitals and have her use a starknife for full flavor.

Wenduag: So many builds for her... whether it's the Cult Leader War Priest or Rowdy Rogue or Demonslayer Ranger though... she's always rocking the dual throwing axes. Unstoppable war machine. Beloved beloathed. Never not a party pillar.

KANZAKA: Sylphiel's oracle, or should I say, the oracle given to priestesses, is like the residual will of the Water Dragon King as in the Claire Bible, or in some cases, the residual will of the Red Dragon God, which is somehow connected to the astral side of the line.

Yashiro: Well. This may be a bit of an overlap with past interviews, but I thought it would be a good idea to start with the story of how you became a novelist. When did you write your first "story"?

KANZAKA: Well, if I didn't write it on manuscript paper, I had been writing what looked like a novel of my own in notebooks since elementary school. About two years ago, I came across my notebooks from those days and thought, "Wow, I used to write this kind of thing" (laughs). The content of the notebooks was like a weird novel. Of course, I was in elementary school, so it wasn't what you would call a novel. 　

And by the time I entered junior high school, I was writing in notebooks and reading what I had written to my friends who were also interested in the same things.

Yashiro: At that time, were your writings exclusively of the bizarre and horror genre?

KANZAKA: When I was in junior high school, it was science fiction.

Yashiro: There are many different types of science fiction, but are you more of a space opera writer?

KANZAKA: I also wrote space opera, but at the time there was a boom in psychic powers, so I also wrote about psychic powers.

Yashiro: So, when did you start writing novels as prescribed, with the aim of submitting them to newcomer awards and the like?

KANZAKA: Well, I think it was around the end of junior high school or the beginning of high school. ...... 　

I wrote letters to publishers and such, asking if they would be willing to critique my work (with envelopes to reply, of course). If they said yes, I would send them a copy of my work on manuscript paper and have them critique it. 　

In terms of newcomer awards, I submitted several times to Hayakawa's SF Novel Award, which I had noticed in a magazine at the time. 　

I didn't even make the cut. ...... (laughs)

Yashiro: The first full-length novel you wrote was actually "Slayers!” I heard that the first full-length novel you wrote was actually "Slayers!”

So the Hayakawa novels you had published before that were short stories?

KANZAKA: Yes, they were usually about 40 pages long, and at most they were less than 100 pages.

Yashiro: But it must have been a good experience for you to have your work critiqued by professional editors and to submit your work to Hayakawa.

KANZAKA: On the subject of evaluation, professional writers often say in interviews that all they have to do is write what they want to write, but what we should not misunderstand is that they are not writing what they want to write.

What we should not misunderstand is that only those who write what they want to write and happen to be popular with the public can become professionals. 　

If all you had to do was write what you wanted to write, there would be no one in the world who "wanted to be a novelist" (laughs).

KANZAKA: Also, when I was in junior high school and high school, the only novels that were really "literature" were the hard ones. ......

Hayakawa was also dominated by hard SF, so someone like me, with my lack of writing ability, would have been especially underappreciated.

Yashiro: It is really only recently that "easy-to-read" novels like Fantasia Bunko and Sneaker Bunko have been increasing.

KANZAKA: They are novels that are more "entertainment" than "literature," aren't they?

Yashiro: I think it was in the afterword of one of Megumi Kobayashi's books, and she wrote that she had to rewrite it after her editor pointed out that there were too many sentences and that kids these days couldn't read it. ...... 　

When I read that story, I thought it was very symbolic of the state of novels these days (laughs).

Ikawa: Are you conscious of such things when you write?

KANZAKA: Well, in my case, I'm not good at heavy sentences. ...... I write more like I am writing a "story" rather than a "novel". That is why I call myself a "story writer" rather than a "novelist. In other words, I just happen to use the medium of "print" to tell the "stories" that I have created. 　

Well, telling a story using the medium of "print" is only called "novelist" by the world, so I guess I am a "novelist" in the sense of classification. ......I'm thinking to myself, "I'm not a writer..." (laughs)

Ikawa: Did you ever think that you would like to work in a visual way? I don't mean drawing pictures or anything like that, but writing screenplays or ......

KANZAKA: It is true that the screenplay is also a print media, but a screenplay is only viable when it is visualized by other people. And since I lived in Inaka, it was impossible for me to collaborate with others to create something, so I had to do it alone. And the only way to do that was through novels. In other words, I had to use a process of elimination to come up with a means of expression that I could use.

Yashiro: I see.
