Byrd: Dad? Oscar: Morning, bud.. miserable day, huh? I’m not looking forward to packing up in the rain. Oscar: Did you sleep okay? Byrd: Erm… Oscar: GO GET YOUR HEARING AIDS! [Byrd fidgeted guilty, implying that he’d lost yet another pair] Byrd: [sobs] Why do I have to be deaf without them, papa-.. s’not fair. [Oscar held Byrd tightly, stroking his back until his sobs subsided somewhat] Oscar: LET’S SEE WHAT WE CAN DO… [Oscar plonked Byrd outside as he rummaged through his bags, eventually producing a backup pair of hearing aids] Oscar: Better? [Byrd nodded gratefully, burying his snotty nose in his father’s hair as he threw his arms around him] Oscar: Maybe you ought to think twice about learning SSL. Byrd: What’s the point? No one else knows it. Oscar: Robin does, and we all know bits n’ pieces, don’t we? [Byrd grumbled disinterestedly] Oscar: I think it’s long overdue, pal-.. what if we all learn it together? Properly this time. Byrd: I guess… Oscar: All I heard was yes. Byrd: Are you deaf too? Oscar: [snorts] C’mon, we’ll probably find the other pairs as we clear up. Wren: Daaaaad, it’s raining! Oscar: The faster we get goin’, the faster we’ll be in the car-.. I bet Wren can pack up faster than you. Byrd: [gasps] NO WAY! [rain pattering]

Ooc; I really tried to change my game to the chinese dub because some characters are portrayed more accurately to the idea I have of them in that language, or, at least, some voices seem to fit a few characters better, in my opinion. But do you wish to know why I am not capable of fully making the change from the english dub to chinese dub and committing to it?
Kaeya.
I don't know what Josey was cooking and still continues to cook inside that recording booth, but english dub Kaeya to me is simply peak Kaeya. Remains undefeated to this day.
#【 out of cryo 】#{{ every other character in cn? AMAZING! }}#{{ BUT KAE!? Josey my beloved.............................. }}#{{ I even tried playing kae's hangout in chinese and I had to change SO FAST because I am so used to Josey's portrayal }}#{{ and his tones and nuances and how he delivers his lines. like. I am not even being biased --- }}#{{ because I have always played in english but I have learned to love and prefer other characters in the chinese dub i.e. kaveh or diluc }}#{{ but kaeya............................... i simply cannot let go of the english portrayal; he is literally so perfect }}#{{ this is all preference of course www but even though the lines are the same; the way they are delivered in those two languages is }}#{{ so vastly different www }}#{{ anyway this really is supposed to be a Josey Montana McCoy appreciation post. keep slaying; king }}

Alright lads it is ridiculously late and I should be asleep but I just realised something and I am actually angry with myself that it didn’t occur to me before
#so i was dicking around on tiktok earlier because we all have our coping mechanisms and one of mine is every so often i redownload tiktok#spend like 40 minutes on it and then go ‘this is dumb’ and then delete it or at least remove it from my home screen#which is honestly good enough because i have no sense of object permanence 👍#anyway so at one point i got an ad which was for this terrible but also weirdly compelling mlm romance series told via short episodes#i seriously sat and watched the whole ten minute ad#i now can’t find it on the app it’s supposedly on which is fucking annoying. but anyway#at some point it occurred to me… if this shit was in italian i’d probably learn italian SO fast#because i’d be so hooked. and like the vocab isn’t even difficult. i don’t think you’d need more than a b1 in english#to comprehend this show#so then i was like ellen you absolute fucking idiot#what the hell are you doing boring yourself to tears forcing yourself to do italian input through podcasts and videos#you don’t care for bc realistically they are kinda boring#when there literally MUST be mm romance shows that are in italian. or literally just.. any content you like. that is in italian#like i literally don’t watch vlogs in english bro. why am i watching them in italian#i mean most of the stuff i watch in english is shit like true crime that i def don’t have the vocab for#but like there’s no reason i can’t find the equivalent of this trashy tiktok show; just in italian#anyway we are going to see just how proficient being a fujoshi can get me in another language 👍#i need to make the most of this because this probably isn’t an option for arabic input#but i have already found arabic media i like. it’s the music#my flatmate the other day was like why are you shaking ass? i was like being real with you i’m not even sure i’m supposed to be#but i can’t not. have you HEARD this shit. anyway#personal

I haven't done proper low-level language study in a while – I've been mostly focusing on simply using my higher-level languages – and I forgot how FUN it is! I've re-started the Assimil courses (seriously the best damn language-learning material out there, I swear) for Croatian and Mandarin, and I am having SUCH A GOOD TIME 🥰
#langblr#language learning#cosmo gyres#a day in the life#boy have my writing skills in chinese atrophied though#my characters are shaped so badly haha#but it's all coming back to me pretty fast#i'm determined to write out the full text of every lesson in hanzi#we'll see how long that plan lasts haha#i think i was blocking myself for ages because i kept thinking that i should study more 'useful' languages#so every time i felt the craving for croatian (which i do not have any opportunity to use) i'd make myself polish up my french instead#and every time i felt the craving for chinese (which is admittedly a useful language but also not immediately applicable in my life)#i'd think 'nooo jeez i should really do arabic instead. seeing as everyone speaks arabic where i live'#and tbf i really do want to learn arabic too bc i feel like it would be an amazing way to connect with my neighbors#but frankly the prospect of putting all that time into msa and then STILL having to pick a dialect and learn it after that#is... well... disencouraging. let's say.#the writing and the sound of it is so gorgeous though. i really do hope i get around to it someday#personal#tag rant

I love languages but they can be so isolating too sometimes
#need to vent a bit I just received a bank letter from the last country I lived in#and it kinda hit me how even when learning that language for 6 years I wasn't good enough to speak it fluently#I would never be good enough#and every time I had to start by saying “sorry my language might not be good”#and I think in the end it kind of broke something in me#in past +10 years I lived in multiple countries and I put a lot of effort to speak the language as fast as I could#and I loved learning them and I'm glad I had a chance to live in those places#but damn was it lonely too#one of the things about being from a small insignificant country is that you're always the one who needs to adapt and change#sometimes people would be patient with me and speak slowly or offer to speak in english and I would be so grateful for that#most of the times it was just me sitting in a group at school/at work/at a friend gathering trying to catch the native language#and feeling extremely left out#it did push me to learn the language much quicker tho#and I've been feeling guilty too because those were amazing oportunities and other people have it worse#but maybe two things can be true at the same time#anyway I wrote back a reply to the bank after doublechecking 15 times the grammar I think it should be okay

stg as soon as i make it through this semester im gonna reread tgcf
i actually still haven't read the entirety of the 7seas tl bc it wasn't all out on my last read and i got impatient sjxkd but!! with the revised version finally out and some lovely ppl having translated the chapters with big changes I think it'll be fun to read them together :D
#tragically cant learn an entire language super fast to be able to read the revised version directly#tho i might be taking an intro cn class next semester if my major change pans out how i think it will#miiiight be a mistake since im still committed to strengthening my Japanese but uhh we'll see#it seems like it'd be fun!! probably way more difficult than intro jp for me tho#wayy less prior experience with the language#realistically if i need another language for credit i should do Korean since it has similar grammar to jp#but alas i am governed by my interests#jay yells#anyway. one more week. just gotta do final projects and exams.. hhhhh

Duolingo will try and convince you that practicing for a few days when you feel like you can’t take a new lesson yet is a failure, that you aren’t doing as well as you could and “oh no! The ranking”
The owl lies. I have taken three near perfect practice lessons the last three days because I want to make sure I have the stuff I’ve learned seared into my brain better. If i don’t take a week or two for practicing old lessons I’m going to forget how to spell pharmacy in Norwegian and then I’ll fail a future one. You can’t expect me to just learn new words constantly without brushing up on old ones and NOT forget how to spell something or the word for something else, you dumb bitch. This is about me learning how to listen and read, not about how long I can stay in the sapphire league. The notifications about it are super annoying but I can’t shut them off or I’ll forget when I’ve spent the day doing something different than usual and my schedule is thrown off
#emma posts#some nights I think it would be more convenient to just read some of my translation dictionary but that fucking owl doesn’t know I do that#and it will break my streak#I have been keeping up for over 200 days#since I started using the app actually#if that fucking owl says I stopped practicing because I spent a night with my actual dictionary I will execute it like French nobility#I’m weirdly heated about my streak#I guess I could take a Swedish lesson if I really wanted to be lazy but then I mix up spelling!#at least Spanish is so different that i don’t mix up the spelling but I’m so rusty at it and haven’t been focusing on that one#sometimes I wish I was taking in person classes so I could ask questions but then people would see me and I get nervous doing this with#people watching and do worse than when I’m alone#I’m also a little pissed that the app focuses on travel so much because I’m learning the language for something else first but it’s#better than nothing and my alternative is just read dictionaries and look for YouTube videos#why am I so bad at making sentences in other languages? I can listen to people speak with words I’ve learned and get that fast. but making#the sentences MYSELF is so much harder!#and I don’t have anyone to talk to with it anyway#the only guy I can think of is probably dead and I’m not even sure how to contact him anymore

incredible to be an Adult capable of casting so much aspersion on the topic of the youtube polyglot
#i had such a fascinating talk with my friend about the issues with language learning and MAINTENANCE as by nature a profoundly time#consuming repetitive activity that in many cases will not make you any money#in a gamified ultra fast world#and i think that's the case with so many of these guys and the push to speak as many languages as possible and how they have to make a#career off interesting videos and whatnot#it's really really hard to gamify genuine proficience#but it's also WILD how they pass off a2's as being fluent in something
