love potions [hp]
anyone else think love potions should be banned?
using a love potion on someone is, in short, controlling their minds and desires and using them for romantic or even sexual purposes without their consent. so r@pe, basically.
this is literally how voldemort was born. merope gaunt kidnapped tom riddle senior and had a child with him entirely without his consent.
in present context (hp timeline) we see love potions being handled by literal teenagers- being sold in weasleys' wizard wheezes, disguised as perfumes and being shipped into hogwarts secretly.
there is a whole cauldron full of amortentia down in the dungeons, in a SCHOOL.
the whole "love", whimsical, fantastical part of these distract you from what they really are- mind-controllers. not unlike the imperius curse- and THAT'S banned and unforgivable.
Tumblr media
notice how even harry unknowingly uses the two interchangeably- what are two ways to control someone to do what you like? the imperius curse... or a love potion.
how is shit like this not banned by the ministry?

Another reason I'm an Akechi Lives truther: cognition, baby. Vanilla P5 reveals that Morgana only lived in the end due to the Thieves' cognition/bond with him. Persona 5 Royal made the conscious choice to give Akechi endure, which lets you survive a fatal hit at 1 HP if you max his confidant, and maxing his confidant is the only way he appears in the postcredits. If ever there was a place where power of love, bonds, or cognition could make a miracle happen, it's the Metaverse. So maybe we don't need a huge, complex explanation. Maybe the connection Joker and Akechi share is enough. Now if only Atlus would give us a followup...

I said I'd write down my "proper" P5 verse for Yui, so here it is.
Long story short, Yui spends most of the story as an antagonist to the Phantom Thieves. In gameplay terms, she'd serve as something like a mix between a Reaper and an Attendant fight - wandering around Palaces starting with Madarame's, potentially replacing the Reaper in Mementos where she effectively prevents you from going back up (or down) a floor unless defeated, and being an exceptionally powerfully foe if fought.
But as for the story, the reason behind it starts with none other than Yaldabaoth. Given Yui lives in Tokyo again by the time of Persona 5 and is even tangentially associated with Mitsuru's Shadow Operatives, Yaldabaoth didn't want the past Persona users interfering with his "game". And so, using his powers, he effectively wiped the memories of any Persona users and associates he could, at least in regards to the time they spent where they learned about Personas and Shadows.
However, Yui herself was unaffected, due to her ability to see past lies and deception - in essence, the memory "wipe" was actually a sort of cover-up of the associated memories. Still there, but inaccessible. And so, overnight, Yui found herself without any of her friends and contacts. With her greatest fear realized, Yui began to panic and try to think of any means she could to find out what happened and fix it.
This research eventually led her to the counsel of none other than Masayoshi Shido, who she learned had acquired research on the nature of cognition. However, instead of simply giving her the help she needed, he requested the favor of her family for his political career - as the Minamoto Group has very strong political ties and can effectively end or start a politician's career, having them on his side would prove the greatest boon he could ask for.
Yui provided him a contact within her family, and in return, Shido had Akechi bring Yui into the Metaverse, where her pre-existing Persona abilities manifested as a suit of black armor and a massive greatsword. Though she didn't yet harbor a will of rebellion, she also had the power needed to fight Shadows, and so the Metaverse clad her as a knight-errant - loyal to nobody but herself. However, her Personas are "incomplete", nothing but hazy silhouettes lacking true form. Still incredibly powerful, but they make it clear that Yui's powers aren't fully usable in the Metaverse.
Yaldabaoth, meanwhile, found this wrinkle in his plans amusing. And so, to fuel this "third wheel", he granted Yui access to the Metaverse Navigator as well. Not long after, the Phantom Thieves made their debut, and after they dealt with Kamoshida, Yui began to suspect their involvement in her friends' change. More curiously, her Meta Nav began to trace the search history of the Thieves' Navs - unknowingly another "gift" from Yaldabaoth - allowing her to follow them whenever they entered a Palace or even Mementos.
This trend of the Thieves entering a Palace and Yui, now known to them as the "Black Knight", hunting them down throughout them continued. In the meantime, Yui happened to meet Joker at Leblanc; unaware of each other's secret identities, they would form a bond, with Yui becoming Joker's Confidant of the Awakening Arcana - short for "The Awakening of the Dead", the Paul Christian deck's version of the Judgement Arcana. And much like Sae's Confidant, Yui's progresses through the story. Through it, Joker gradually gets an idea of Yui's plight and begins to offer her genuine comfort and hope through her situation. In exchange, Yui offers studying, training, and interpersonal advice, allowing Joker to increase the growth rate of social stats when training them (increased even more with Chihaya's Lucky Reading), more boosts to Confidant progress from dialogue choices, and more HP / SP growths during training.
The hunt, however, comes to an end with Sae's Palace, where she forgoes chasing down the Phantom Thieves when Shido mentions to her they'll be captured soon. Already mildly suspicious of Shido's intent from the start, this only causes her to wonder if she had just been used by him this entire time. And when Joker is finally captured, her influence at least manages to get her a name - where she learns her friend and confidant was the person she was trying to capture this entire time.
Once Joker escapes, however, Yui manages to track them down to Leblanc, and as the Phantom Thieves talk with Sojiro and Sae, Yui enters and reveals that she not only knows who they are, but that she's been the "Black Knight" they've been avoiding all this time. While at first they're nervous, Yui reassures them and tells them that she knows who the culprit was behind Joker's kidnapping - Masayoshi Shido - and that she had been manipulated by him this entire time, too. This solidifies their suspicions and after verifying his Palace, Yui elects to join them.
Once there, Shido eventually greets them over a monitor, shrouded in shadow, where he confirms that, to him, Yui and the Minamoto Group were effectively just one big stepping stone to him. As he continues to mock her "naivete" and tell her that she may as well still just be a child playing grown-up, Yui grows more enraged until she finally snaps, her true will of rebellion re-awakening...
"It's been far too long..." Yui's eyes dilate as her stance widens, her hands slowly closing into tight fists. Her breathing begins to grow more haggard and audible as she regards Shido's Shadow on the screen before her. "So many years since we've last felt this pain. This torment... This anger..." Slowly, Yui's black knight-esque armor begins to fall apart, clattering to the floor with each piece lost. All the while, power begins to flow from her as what was once an undiscernible shape whenever she called forth her power began to gradually take form. "These irritating individuals who think they can use you... Abuse you... Even though, by all rights, you should stand equal or even above them..." Eventually, the last piece falls away to leave Yui in a black bodysuit adorned with spiked gauntlets, sabatons, and pauldrons, and a tattered cape now more resembling a scarf. Her helmet has also crumbled, leaving behind the upper half of the helm to form a makeshift mask. "Don't you think it's time you showed them the consequences of their actions...? Let us run wild once more and display the fury that once made us so feared...!" "...Yeah. I've had enough playing nice..." Gripping her mask, Yui grinned a beast-like grin as blood began to trickle down her face the harder she pulled at it, before finally ripping it off with a loud roar. "LET'S TEAR THEM APART, DAJI!!!"
Tumblr media
From there, Yui's newest Persona awakens - the evil trickster fox of Chinese legend, Daji. Like Yui herself, Daji is a charming, beautiful woman who nonetheless hides a vicious monster beneath her exterior self, even if Yui is far more benevolent than Daji ever was.. Specializing in Almighty attacks, Yui obliterates the Shadows that Shido sends to deal with them, and from there, assists the Phantom Thieves in traversing Shido's Palace, even using her connections to receive the letter of recommendation from the former noble - even if it still results in a fight due to her, much like Ann, not wanting anything to do with his advances.
After Shido's defeat, Yui then joins the Phantom Thieves in Mementos, but when they descend to confront the Holy Grail, numerous Shadows gather to try and stop them. Yui remains at the "gate" of Mementos to hold the Shadows off, and she isn't heard from again, even when the Thieves confront Yaldabaoth proper in Tokyo - her voice is noticeably absent from the ones encouraging Joker and the others.
It isn't until Maruki's attempted rewrite of reality that Yui returns, and while it's ambiguous at first if she truly survived or it's a product of Maruki's reality, she does confirm that she managed to survive. It just... took a really long time for her to escape Mementos, and from there, she needed a relatively short hospital stay to recover from the exhaustion and injuries. And, much like with Yaldabaoth, Yui is unaffected by Maruki's rewrite due to her ability to see the truth.
From there, while the rest of the Phantom Thieves are incapacitated, Yui joins Joker and Akechi in the initial assault on Maruki's Palace, and sticking with them once they and Sumire join. And once Maruki is defeated, she can finally return to her peaceful life with her friends, both new and old.

Info Dump. Now *holds gun*
Okay, okay! ;; Under a cut! ...but first, some history. (Also under the cut!)
Zenkichi's big turn and the first time I saw the August 14th scene was two days before my birthday, March 20. My friends were telling me that he was gonna be the one I would yell about ridiculously, and I snorted it off. How could anyone think that the dorky cop was gonna be the one I liked the most? I liked the single dad sad cops that would absolutely tear down the country for their kids. … …and then I saw the entire scene with Zenkichi after Sapporo, and I was absolutely thrown headfirst into 'wait, what in the fuck is this?' Needless to say, I had to stop after the save point because I was crying. A lot. Goofy old dork is actually- really fucking messy on the inside? Oh no. Oh NO, I suddenly latched on like a fool.
It sort of became a big spiral from there about him, and I began to come up with a ridiculous degree of sad with him that the game never explained because- it's a month long experience. And not enough time to really dive into the meat of the whole "EXCUSE ME, THE NEW DAD WE PICKED UP IS ACTUALLY FULL OF SELF-LOATHING AND BULLSHIT" sort of idea. (And about how Joker/Akiren was somehow okay with working with a fucking cop after. Y'know. All of P5/R? MUH?)
As per this introduction of Zenkichi and in my time crying about him for the last three years, I have thus come up with the following... headcanons and sobbing ideas.
🅱️LEASE NOTE A LOT OF THIS IS FIXED IN MY SILLY ALTERNATE UNIVERSE FOR THINGS, BUT IF IT SOUNDS NEAT, IT CAN BE APPLIED IN OTHER CONTEXTS.
🌸-🐺-🌸-🐺-🌸
Zenkichi and Valjean have had a connection for the last some twenty plus years. It started as that little voice in his head that would tell him to push the envelope, chase the bad guys, indulge in his anger. Zenkichi would often rebuff these advances, and over time, the voice got louder and angrier at how he wouldn't speak up a lot for himself because of 'how he just sits like an obedient dog and takes it.' It's only in Akane's jail that he finally breaks free of his chains and begins to really make a man out of himself.
Zenkichi does have some mental illnesses, mostly due to childhood trauma involving emotional abuse from his father. Emotions were pretty much a way to get his dad to yell at him about how weak he looked; being sad or angry or even melancholic were good ways to get the 'boys don't cry' talk of sorts often, and he bottled his emotions at a very early age. (And he still does many times, mainly because he doesn't want the kids to see him breaking down. The Thieves often help him with this, as does Maruki to an extent.)
There's a saying that your anger can hurt you more than it can hurt others, and it actively applies to Wolf's Fury mechanic in the Metaverse. As it stands today (04/03/2024), the kids vaguely know of his power and how it can fuck him up in the Metaverse. What the kids don't know, however, is that his wounds carry into the real world and give him many scars. At first, he tries to chalk them up to wounds he got when he was on the force for years, but it eventually will catch up to him: when the Thieves see the damage it does to him, they get… very concerned, to say the least. And they will hound him to get scar cream for some of the worse ones.
Zenkichi has smoked for a few years, but he did stop before he met the Phantom Thieves; he can't do the mile for shit, but he can jog fairly okay. His drinking habits aren't that great, though, to wear he can actually have enough to pass out. ...he's getting better though. Trying to get better. (He can get to be too lazy to get up and get one.)
Each time Enduring Soul activates for Zenkichi, it fucks him up pretty badly. I know the game mechanics say he survives with one HP and bounces back, but I've taken it a step further to say that yeah. He dies. He does die, and he comes back with renewed fervor. As the only known playable character that isn't a protagonist to have this ability, I have once more taken it to a higher degree of fuckery and made it worse.
Every one of the Phantom Thieves's experience with a shitty dad makes him want to go and punch a bastard, but they convince him not to do so... so he won't go to jail. However, he doesn't listen and visits many of them. And while he doesn't get physical, he instills the fear of Valjean into every one of them.
To help deal with his anger issues he's unlocked since his awakening, he's since remembered his hand-to-hand combat training from being on the force; with Valjean's (genuine) gentle nudges and coaxing, he finds himself slowly going back into combative sports. He finds it liberating when he can go wild in private away from the kids, knowing that many of them have some kind of trauma from adults being angry or violent.
THAT SAID… when the kids find out about his habit, I'd like to think that Zenkichi admits that he didn't want to tell the kids out of fear and their traumatic pasts and whatnot, but they're far more relieved he has an outlet for said rage that's healthy for him and not doing worse things. (It also comes in handy for other things- because these kids can't stay out of trouble too often, but that comes down the line much later.)
Gramps- does leave the force, but only after he and Miyako speak about it at length for a long time. He ends up becoming a private investigator with quite the name for himself that gets mumbled through the streets: the Wolf of Kyoto.
I have quite a number more but... this is getting long.

Mpreg Akiren/Joker during Strikers/Scramble
SPOILERS FOR P5 STRIKERS, BELOW, SKIP IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED
Okay, but I really like the "Akiren/Joker being pregnant during P5 Strikers" concept.
Especially since the birthday I picked out for Komari (If you haven't seen the past name voting poll, that's the name that won) is August 8th 2017, which is in the middle of Strikers right when they arrive at Sapporo. That could lead to interesting drama where maybe during the Natsume Boss fight, Joker gets hit hard enough where it causes his water to break early
(for context on how bad this is, Baby's due date is October 26th, (originally was November 2nd according to Time and Dates website, but when playing around with a pregnancy conception date calculator, Due Date came out as October 26th, so I'm trusting that source)
I had the idea that for this scenario Joker intentionally hasn't told his friends about his pregnancy and especially doesn't want to tell them once they regain access to the Metaverse and have to go on a roadtrip to infiltrate Jails, because of the automatic obligation to be the Leader and being vital to the team, he worries they'll treat him cautiously or make him sit out battle altogether for the fetus's sake, which---while he too is also worried about his unborn child's safety, he feels he doesn't have much of a choice. He can't just take a break and opt out of the party, what if the others get overpowered by a shadow or Monarch and die in battle because he wasn't there to protect them?!
And he especially doesn't want to drop the pregnancy news and explanation as to why and who the baby daddy is in front of Futaba and Haru because "Earlier this year in February me and Akechi who was resurrected by Maruki, uhhh----engaged in passionate---*ahem* a "Bedroom Duel" before taking Maruki's treasure the following day. I was born with a uterus that didn't shrivel up like it's supposed to when an embryo develops biological male organs and genitalia. I still Identify and consider myself a guy though. I didn't realize my uterus was even functional, but against all logic, it is, and I'm pregnant with mine and Akechi's baby, and yes I intend to keep it." might be awkward for them since Akechi caused the death of both their parents.
But "Hide the pregnancy" plan becomes much trickier when your in early labor, and despite Akiren's stubborn insistence that 'he's fine' as he physically struggles for his life to act like he's not having painful contractions, the rest of the group is clearly seeing through his BS and that something way more than just having low HP and SP is going on.
Or-----
If Joker's unborn child has their own Persona that triggers whenever Joker enters battle or is in trouble, and said Persona emanates from his belly.
"So----are you going to explain why a translucent unfamiliar persona just holographed from your abdomen and cast an almighty attack that insta killed that group of shadows we were just fighting, or----?"
How would he get out of that one? There's not many answers he could come up with that would probably convince them, his friends aren't stupid after all.
So Akiren would have to reveal the truth "Yeah, it's not my Persona, it's my unborn child's. Too be fair, I didn't know fetuses could have a Persona up until now, I'm just as bewildered as the rest of you! But yes, I'm----pregnant."
Just the idea of Fetus Komari having a persona with inherited abilities of both her parents ultimate Personas, thus having scarily strong abilities, and popping in mid battle to wipe the enemies away is hilarious to me.
Joker just handles it by making a joke that "Oh, I guess my child inherited Akechi's bloodlust in battle, haha."
Cut to the rest of the Thieves standing there in a mix of awe and horror. "Why the hell did you say that so calmly, you think that's a good thing?!"

seeking the permission to be weak: on the themes of goro akechi’s arc
vulnerability, isolation versus connection, resentment, emotional immaturity, sunk cost fallacy, constructing and confronting oneself, and what it means to be acknowledged.
for context, these are my semi-connected thoughts after playing through the game’s seventh palace for the first time. it left me feeling like i'd been hit by a goddamn truck, and suddenly all these damn words erupted from me. haven't actually finished the game yet, but i needed to get these feelings off my chest before i could keep going LOL [late-game spoilers for persona 5]
the akechi confrontation in shido’s palace has earned its right to reside in my head rent-free forever. i mean, it’s mechanically brilliant. all i’m looking for was a place to SAVE like normal after a mini-boss; instead i am ambushed by a boy who, frankly, could’ve used someone to save him. which is to say, i enter this fight fuckin bedraggled because i haven’t even healed up from that last encounter. three of my current party members are under 100 hp, and only a third of joker’s sp remains. it’s looking kinda ugly.
and yet, even though akechi had all the preparation on his side and demonstrated three full phases of power… he still loses. purely on the basis that mechanically, joker has so many powerful abilities gained through his confidants and all of his phantom thief friends fighting by his side–friends who could tap in when the others were exhausted. it’s entirely because of those bonds between joker and his party that they could beat the sole, sad akechi.
i LOVE how thematically resonant that is. for all his talents that even the phantom thieves begrudgingly admire, akechi still comes up short. not because he himself is deficient, but because he has no one else to rely on once he’s given his all.
when it comes to the thieves, this is the sorest part for him. akechi mocks their friendship, calling them “pieces of shit… who lick each other’s wounds…!” but what he really resents is that they help each other when they’re weak. growing up, when he was scared and lacking, he had no comfort but himself. it kills him to see them supporting one another because deep down, he’s always longed for the permission to be weak, yet still looked after.
this resentment is especially interesting when you examine how much akechi’s circumstances reflect those of the phantom thieves. having your life turned upside down by masayoshi shido. enduring the superficial judgment of your peers. betrayed by your father figure and haunted by your mother's death. performing perfection and compliance at the expense of your ideals. believing you have no choice but to obey your dad's orders while holding out for any shred of remaining affection. even being orphaned and hiding yourself from the world, feeling as though you have no power to escape your pain on your own. akechi and each of the phantom thieves have all been victimized by cruel adults and ostracized by corrupt systems. society had deprived all of them of a place to belong. but only akechi remained disconnected from other people, and only akechi took irrevocable actions that anyone would rightfully revile.
yet despite what could reasonably be expected from anyone, the thieves still choose to sympathize and plead with him to join their cause, properly this time. even futaba and haru, who have both been most directly harmed by akechi’s actions, try to acknowledge him and the isolation he’s felt all his life. it’s kindness he may not even deserve. but maybe it’s because, within akechi, they catch a glimpse of a much lonelier path that they might’ve stumbled down if it weren’t for their fellow outcasts… particularly joker.
joker is the foil that slices deeply into akechi’s pride and sense of self. just look at what they share: their unjust treatment by adults, their insightfulness, their quick wits, their charm, their competitive drive, their metaverse powers, their thief personas. hell–they’re even the same height. but despite their common ground, joker is stronger than akechi. which forces akechi to admit that his counterpart might have something special that he lacks. there’s something missing from his life, a void he’s never been able to fill but others can. and though there are material ways in which joker was simply luckier than akechi, the most important thematic difference between them is the strength and number of joker's bonds–things that akechi never learned to nurture and thus could never rival.
so akechi hates him. he hates him because joker and his friends stoke his sense of inferiority. joker isn't an empty phony. joker became acknowledged and supported without sacrificing his justice–in fact because he upheld it. joker found a way out of the misery when he couldn't. maybe worst of all, akechi hates joker because joker could've changed the course of his entire life, if only they'd met a few years earlier.
which makes it ever more tragic that in the present, akechi refuses the thieves’ extraordinary kindness. perhaps he doesn’t believe their show of grace to be genuine, rankling under sympathy that he mistakes for pity; perhaps he cannot fathom being equals in a non-transactional relationship; perhaps he just no longer considers himself worthy after all the awful things he’s done. whatever it is, he rejects what’s possibly his last chance to desert his path of self-destruction and embrace the camaraderie that has always escaped him. he thinks them fools, believing they should just get rid of him, because that's the only thing you can do with people who get in the way, right? it’s in this manner that his inability to move past his pain condemns him yet again.
the thing is, despite the cruelty he inflicted on the world through his childish temper tantrum, it's hard not to mourn the fact that akechi got here largely because he didn’t know how to grow up. if love is a safe space to be vulnerable–to mess up and mature–then with so little of it in his life, no wonder he got stuck stewing in his lies and hatred. that’s why he ends up standing before you as a kid burdened by trauma and loneliness from a young age. a kid whose parental figures abandoned him to bounce from foster home to foster home. a kid given great power yet no one to steer him away from his bad choices. a kid manipulated and molded into a mentally unstable weapon. a kid who committed to a rotten path until he felt he could do nothing else but continue tearing down it. i mean, by then, who was gonna want the real him? who was gonna save him? who was even gonna help him?
by the time he could feel the regret sink in, it was already too late. if only he’d been given the necessary love and direction beforehand, if only he’d met joker and the phantom thieves sooner… his mistakes are still his to own, but no one stepped in to show him how to wield his powers responsibly, how to rely on others, or hell–just how to make friends. when left alone to fend for himself with hardly any resources, he doubled down with the cards he was dealt. how surprised can we be?
instead this “undesirable child” grew desperate to become someone others could rely on–someone so undeniably special that even a person with a blackened heart like shido would have to acknowledge him. with such demanding standards to toil under, he could never be anything less than perfect; he could never entrust his whole broken self to anyone.
ironically, while freezing everyone else out, he grew dependent on external validation. he sought academic honors because it was an “objective” measure of his worth. he sought fame because he craved even the most mercurial of affections. he sought shido’s praise, not just because he thought he could take revenge on him one day, but also because deep down, he was a wounded kid who just wanted love from the father who should’ve loved him from the start.
his life became ruled by an immature revenge fantasy, leading him down the most counterproductive path possible. he worked so hard to construct an ideal version of himself. yet inevitably, every trait of his that others came to envy, every trait that made him “special”–his academics, his celebrity, his charisma, his strength in the cognitive world–is utterly wasted on a man who would never appreciate any of it. like akechi, shido never trusted a soul either, and he never hesitated to crush a pawn whose utility was used up–even if it was his own son.
if only subconsciously, maybe akechi already understood some of these realities. but it isn't until he is confronted by shido's cognitive akechi that the full weight finally sets in. in that moment, filtered through the eyes of the man he hates most, he experiences a reflection: an akechi who is twisted by self-serving logic, who quite literally hates himself, who would mindlessly self-annihilate for shido in a heartbeat. now it's clear: in the process of seeking futile validation, akechi has thrown away his immense potential and, ultimately, his sense of self.
the truth is, akechi admitting that he ever needed or wanted teammates would be admitting that all the suffering he endured and all the blood he spilled–things he defined himself by for lack of anything else–weren’t necessary. it would be admitting that he didn't have to be a perfect prince. he was worthy of acceptance–weaknesses and all–this whole time. that's why, after all the time and energy he's squandered, he can't do it. not even in the face of the phantom thieves’ exceptional compassion.
maybe he could’ve admitted it earlier, if he had just found real friends or familial figures to accept him. he never should have had to be “special” to deserve love. nor did he have to be an honors student, nor an ace detective, nor shido’s puppet. he just had to be akechi.
he just had to open his heart to other people long enough to realize. he just had to put his faith in those who–against all odds and beyond all reasonable expectations–still wanted to save him. but he couldn’t. the myriad complexes guarding his heart wouldn't let him. so even at the very fucking end, although he helps them escape, akechi still closes himself off–metaphorically and physically–from the phantom thieves.
not all is lost, though. at last he makes a choice in defiance of the pathetic self who shaped his entire life around shido’s will. by claiming this agency, akechi may well have elected to destroy both versions of himself: the shadow self that shido cast and the real self that he finally asserted. yet with this pyrrhic action… at least he would die not as his father’s miserable puppet, but as his own person.
if that were the end of akechi's story, it might be bittersweet enough. but before slipping away, joker extends him one last kind gesture: a reminder of akechi’s promise. his promise–perhaps the epitome of how, despite insisting that he hated joker, akechi consciously and unconsciously offered so much of himself in joker's presence. with just a few words, joker recognizes everything akechi has shared with him. perhaps it's notable that there is no sympathy expressed. he just acknowledges who akechi is to him. a rival. a phantom thief. a friend.
finally, this is the unconditional acceptance akechi has been seeking all his goddamned life. and even if he can't comprehend why on earth joker would offer him this… for once, an unguarded smile slips onto his face.

ik the answer is "bc it's a game mechanic" but it's interesting how time works in the metaverse and tv world and such. like you can be there for hours of real life time (so, about the same time for the characters, except they also go up and down stairs and such) and you can be there for 5 minutes, and the same amount of time will pass in the game's world no matter what. you can do nothing in there or you can drain their hp and sp and they'll be just as exhausted. there certainly are implications there i just don't know what they are

Every Game I Played in 2023, Ranked
I debated moving this list to Cohost (after all these years, the Tumblr text post interface still makes me want to punch a wall) but whatever, here we are! Keeping it relatively short this year.
A lot of the games I played aren't going to be on this list because I don't have much new to say about them (MTG, Dwarf Fortress, Strive, etc), but for those that I do, here's the games I played this year.
2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022
Tumblr media
SD Gundam Battle Alliance - 2022 - Steam - ★★★
I really wanted to like this- you know I like me some Gundam- but the experience is simultaneously too thin, too grindy, and bereft of stakes. There's nothing like "oh no we have to preserve the Gundam metaverse from hackers ruining the archived story!" to make me go to sleep.
There's something about the progression system of every "hey, gotta catch 'em all!"-ish Gundam games that is designed exclusively for people who either played these games in the early 00s, or people with addictive personalities. There's been little in the way of evolution. Yeah, the gameplay here is different as a sort of Action RPG, but this is far more Dynasty Warriors than it is say Armored Core.
Just not for me!
... Where's my new Super Robot Wars at damn it?
Tumblr media
9. Pokemon Scarlet/Violet DLC - 2023 - Switch - ★★★★
I talked last year about how I mostly liked this game in spite of its many, many issues. The DLC mostly plays to SV's strengths: fun plot and characters, improved open world catching system from Sword/Shield. They also run considerably better, due to a year of opportunity to make things more stable and address bugs.
That said: It doesn't address any of the other issues that have always been there. Open world exploration becomes kind of pointless when you have the ability to invalidate any level geometry. There is such a thing as too much mobility, believe it or not, when you can just jump over everything. At the same time, the ways cutscenes work is soooo slowwwww, to the point that getting through them to the "action" can be quite tedious.
This DLC also continues the unfortunate thing that drives me nuts about all these DLC, that the level scaling is just awful. It basically assumes you have done literally nothing since finishing Scarlet Violet, and not engaged at all with the post game. Which hey, works out for Lil Timmy who is experiencing this DLC in-line with the base game or only after beating it (since it does dynamically scale for earlier progression), but it makes the whole thing kind of a rote exercise for those who actually played the game more than that?
I realize this is multiple decades now of me barking that hey, it'd be nice if Pokemon didn't exclusively try to appeal to 5 year olds, which is definitely a lost cause at this point. We don't even get stuff like Battle Towers or Frontiers anymore really. Ah well!
Tumblr media
8. Street Fighter 6 - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★
Ok, here's the thing: Street Fighter 6 is overall a very good game, lots of care and polish, but I got a few bones to pick with it.
1. I kind of hate its input buffer. Just drives me nuts, particularly with how it handles supers and specials with overlapping inputs.
2. World Tour while is neat, the progression of it is so goddamn grindy and miserable. So much HP for enemies as you go on, and you don't have access to a fighter's full skill set even at the very end due to how special "slots" work.
3. The cast feels too safe. I like the new additions a lot, and in general the old chars have been rendered quite well, but there's just not a lot of innovation going on. The system mechanics are quite good, but it's the thing where no one on the cast really calls out to me. Personal taste thing.
Tumblr media
Marvel's Spider-Man - 2022 - Steam - ★★★★
I don't think I have anything particularly unique to say about The Spider-Man Experience beyond hey: that's a pretty good Spider-Man. I think the DLC was obnoxious as shit, and a number of the decisions tied to box-checking-completionist stuff were mean for someone like me who has the stupid brain that thinks it's important to do Everything no matter how tedious it is, but overall: a good Spider-Man. Some of the villain stuff felt pretty weak though.
Tumblr media
7. Resident Evil 4 Remake - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★★
A great remake! They trimmed down some areas a fair but, but none of them particularly egregious (some of them, particularly a last act boss being removed, was quite appreciated), and the mechanical additions are fun.
Does it invalidate the old version? I dunno, maybe?
Tumblr media
6. We Love Katamari Re:Roll - 2023 - Steam / Switch - ★★★★★
Hey, you know what's also a very good game? We Love Katamari. Not much new to say beyond hey: the name is accurate, and you should buy and play it. I liked it enough to buy it twice on two platforms, which is silly but it gave me the excuse to play more Katamari so quite understandable.
A thing that does annoy me about the game is them reusing certain models from the other Katamari Remake, even when they were deliberately replaced in We Love Katamari and are even called out as different in the item descriptions despite not being so. Arrgh. It doesn't really matter, but I got the dumb brain for that kind of thing.
Tumblr media
5. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★★
A fighting game that I enjoyed years past now has actually good netcode! The mechanical additions have been very nice, and I've been enjoying myself grinding away for my meager gains. It's also funny having skipped all the base game's DLC and coming in now, since it's like this release just added 20 more chars I'd otherwise not engaged with before.
A ton of polish has made this a fantastic package across the board, so many smart decisions and little details. I'm sure for GranBlue gacha fans it's probably incredible as something that pays tribute as well.
… but see, my main annoyance with the game mostly ties to being unable to stand the source material it pulls from. It's not enough to diminish my positive feelings for the game, but none the less: man, everything about the lore and characters themselves just does NOTHING for me. This is nothing particularly unique to GranBlue itself even, it's pretty in line with how I feel about every gacha title that exists to roll out chars and appeal to as many niches as possible without real forward movement or actual story, but hey here we are.
Looking forward to that 2B.
Tumblr media
4. Baldur's Gate 3 - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★★
A game I admittedly haven't completed yet (I got up to a certain kidnapping in the last act and had to set it aside due to stuff repeatedly coming up for the past couple months) but still: this is a very good tactical RPG. I enjoy the writing, characters, and gameplay quite a lot. A ton of polish went into this.
I don't think I have much to say about it that hasn't been said by others, especially with all the Discourse that has circled it for months-to-years now across Early Access into release.
If there's one thing that does kind of annoy me about the game design, it's the way the player characters are handled. You have the option during character creator to create a character with a number of character-build-y backgrounds, or use their pre-built characters that have existing stories. This choice is lose-lose.
A fully custom character is blank, unimportant. There's nothing special about them beyond their affinity with a certain orb and being Protagonist Man. Their background doesn't really matter, even as you express your personality. You have nothing behind you that meaningfully comes up or affects the story (no Gorion, etc) beyond your role in the conflict. In other words, there's not a lot of reason for you to exist except as a cypher for the named characters.
Playing one of the named characters also sucks, because you lose those the writing for those characters. If I'm stuck aping Karlach, I have no Karlach in my party. You barely even get voice acting once you choose to play those characters either. You effectively end up with less writing and characterization, which kind of sucks! Yes, you do get your backgrounds being looped in and mattering more, which is indeed something, but not enough.
There is secretly a third option that, the more I think about it, is the correct one, they just don't tell you it. You can choose your character background to be tied to the Dark Urge, which results in a lot unique interactions, gives your character an actual background and comes up, etc. They don't outright make this the main option presumably because it comes with a lot of baggage (which, yeah, it does), but it seems completely worth it by comparison to just flitting through the story as either a ghost or the phantom of a real character.
Tumblr media
3. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Remastered - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★★
Play Ghost Trick.
Tumblr media
2. Armored Core VI - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★★
From Software continues to not miss. Fantastic game, some of the most satisfying mecha combat I've played. Story is great; it's still your usual "oops we're not explaining much other than in medias res or by circumstantial details" that From Soft has continued to double down on, but I really enjoy that stuff so hey. I 100%'d this game, got all the endings etc. Great stuff.
Really want some proper DLC so I can do even more, though.
Tumblr media
1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 2023 - Steam - ★★★★★
Let's face it: this wasn't going to end any other way. Breath of the Wild is probably my favorite game of all time, and this is basically just more of that, remixed and remastered into a Second Quest that builds on the first one.
Something I kept thinking about while playing is that while there is volumetrically more to do, more things happening, more mechanics, etc etc, the different approach it takes in terms of focus and approach doesn't make it necessarily a "strictly better" version of Breath of the Wild.
Breath of the Wild was deliberately spare, quiet, and minimalist. Like the name says, its about the quiet wilderness, a poignant world that you explore. Tears of the Kingdom drops much of that, in many ways turning into a kooky madcap version of BOTW. You don't spent nearly as much time smelling the roses and taking in the scenery, as you're often too busy blasting by using any number of the new movement abilities or combat tools or literal flying machines you can now Nuts and Bolts together.
It's a deliberate escalation, one that in my opinion requires the preceding part to work. They add together into one complete singular experience, rather than pulling against each other. That's awesome, exactly what I wanted. Now I get to have two favorite games of all time that are secretly just one-and-the-same.
Some minor thoughts:
1. Lots of great writing and characterization, built up well on BOTW there.
2. It's kind of funny how much it goes out of the way to avoid talking much about BOTW in case someone plays this game first.
3. The last of a Master mode this time around is kind of a bummer but oh well!
4. The vehicle crafting system and everything about it, including the way it plays into the existing physics system is fucking insane. Absolutely incredible game design. Bonkers.
I'm really curious how the hell they're going to follow these games up. Going back to square-0 from this formula- one that is so built up and diverse, seems like it'd be impossible to me. What the hell could you do? Looking forward to finding out.

let’s discuss the difference between how macusa and m.o.m. treat their criminals.
THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC, BRITAIN
Tumblr media
criminals guilty of severe crimes such as murder are not sentenced to death, so to speak. they are sentenced to life in Azkaban, where they stay for the rest of their lives, drained of their happiness until they die of misery, health issues, or whatever. dementors are supposed to be soul-sucking creatures, but they don’t actually suck out the souls of the prisoners. they’re supposed to be satisfied with feeding on only emotions, and guard the prisoners till their end.
there’s a bit of discrepancy, however- let's compare the sentences of Sirius and Barty Crouch Jr. Sirius is convicted for the murder of Peter Pettigrew and 12 Muggles, and his sentence is simply life in Azkaban. Barty Crouch Jr is convicted for the one murder of Cedric Diggory, but he has his soul sucked out by a Dementor.
(note: yes, he actually killed his father, but I’m pretty sure Fudge didn’t know that until AFTER crouch jr got the dementor‘s kiss.)
so- the difference in their sentences is wildly different. however, one important factor is that Fudge is in charge in Barty‘s case, and we know he’s a wack ass Minister, while he wasn’t Minister yet when Sirius was convicted. so we can probably excuse this injustice to Fudge's incapabilities as the Minister of Magic.
so in conclusion: the British ministry does not take the lives of their prisoners and just dumps them in the hands of dementors to die naturally or have their souls sucked out.
THE MAGICAL CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Tumblr media
criminals guilty of severe crimes are immediately sentenced to death. there are no dementors in America, as far as we know.
Newt and Tina‘s case is a little complicated. MACUSA knew that neither actually killed Shaw themselves, but they were held responsible for the Obscurial that did it. Tina‘s role in the matter was barely even known, and if they’d asked around a little bit, they’d have known that she had been trying to arrest Newt for days and was just doing her job. but with little to no information on what part she played in the murder, she was sentenced to death as well.
like i said, no dementors. here, the deaths of the criminals are orchestrated by wizards and witches. their happy memories are drawn out and are shown to the prisoner in a pensieve-like cesspool, until the prisoner is tempted to relive those happy memories and jump in, killing themselves. so basically, they’re gaslighted into committing suicide.
the most dramatic part of this comparison is that the way prisoners meet their end in Britain is the exact opposite of the way they do in America. think about it- in Britain, their happy memories are drained out until they are left with only misery and depression and negativity, and they die, tortured and unhappy. in America, they are forced to view their happy memories until they jump in- dying cruelly, but (to a certain extent) happily.
woah.
which method do you think is worse, or better?

Sence of presence in a virtual world is the main goal of the metaverse. With its ability to create immersive experiences that conflate the real and virtual worlds, virtual reality (VR) technology is leading the metaverse revolution. Users can see a 360-degree perspective of virtual worlds with VR headsets like Meta's Oculus, which replace their view of the real world. In a number of sectors, including customer service, healthcare, and education, this technology has already made a major contribution. VR is an invaluable training and educational tool because studies have demonstrated that it enhances learning and increases accuracy in medical practice. If I haven't download tumblr, I've might know only her good side alias her diligent in her past
Also apparently my brain won’t shut up today but:
JKR’s new book announcement should not surprise you. It should not shock you. And I don’t mean that like, oh she’s been racist and horrible before so this is nothing new.
No. I mean that this is 100% intentional and reactionary. This is in direct response the backlash she got for being transphobic trash. She’s doing this because she’s digging her heels in and doubling down on her bullshit. This is PR 101, causing outrage to get people to pay attention to her.
So what we are not going to fucking do is give this woman a single fucking penny. We’re not giving her the fucking time of day. I do not want to see discourse posts in however many months’ time when the book comes out. There doesn’t need to be discourse because we fucking know already that it’s trash. This book and this author need to die with a whimper.
