Animaniacs VS Crunch: WHY are they insane-y?
Despite being the creator (in-universe) of the main trio of Animaniacs, Lon Borax himself is a relatively obscure, and more often than not, absent character.
Tumblr media
In "The Warners' 65th Anniversary Special", it's revealed that before he drew the Warner siblings, he created Buddy (again, only in-universe).
Tumblr media
Buddy (both in-universe and out) was seen as a boring character, suggesting that Lon Borax himself perhaps wasn't the most creative person. In that case, isn't it strange that he went from creating a character as unremarkable and bland as Buddy to characters as boisterous and bizarre as the Warners? Especially, as it turns out, in such a short amount of time:
"Congratulations, Borax, you’ve discovered a cure for insomnia. That’s the most boring cartoon I’ve ever seen. Do you realize we have to show this cartoon to the front office tomorrow?"
Tumblr media
This was Weed Memlo's response to the Buddy cartoon. When Lon tried to defend himself, claiming that is wasn't "that bad", Weed was having none of it:
"No! It’s worse! Fix it! Add more characters! Poof it up! Stay up all night if you have to! I want funny! If you need me, I’ll be at the smokehouse."
Weed Memlo (a director at WB) demanded that Lon work overnight, all the while he would be lounging around at a restaurant. Now, if you know even the slightest bit about how to make a cartoon, you'll know that it takes time...ALOT of time. As in, it takes over half a year to make just one episode of most cartoons, amount of time. So you'll also know that, even if he wasn't starting from scratch, expecting Lon to create new characters and heavily modify an existing cartoon in just one night is absurd.
Tumblr media
link
What Animaniacs is depicting here is an overt example of an animator being forced to partake in crunch culture. And how did this affect Lon? Well, in his own words:
"I worked all night on that cartoon. I was exhausted, and then...and then I remember it was exactly 2:43 a.m. on the morning of February 30th, I-I started drawing these weird characters!"
What seems to be heavily implied here is that the stress and exhaustion he experienced due to crunch drove Lon mad, and that's why the Warners are as insane as they are.
As we know, the Warners go on to appear in more Buddy cartoons, then get their own shorts to star in (even if they didn't make any sense), but end up locked in the water tower once the studio didn't want to deal with them anymore. After a few brief escapes or instances of the studio temporarily letting them out (either to loan them out to other studios to make more money or to have them star in war propaganda short films), they escape in 1993 and end up starring in their own TV show.
Tumblr media
But Lon Borax?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He went nuts.
Yeah he doesn't get better, they just put him in a home.
This is all portrayed comedically, but unfortunately crunch culture actually does have harmful affects on animators and people who work in the video game industry in the real world. 100-hour weeks, cases of sickness and depression, just really awful stuff. However, I don't think this was the writers necessarily making light of crunch, quite the opposite.
Weed Memlo got so fed up with the Warners he quit directing their cartoons. They constantly annoyed everyone who worked at the studio. Pulling pants down, scaring their crushes, playful teasing, stuff like that. They never did anything too harmful, in fact sometimes people just ran away screaming before they even did anything. This was their response to Wakko simply asking "Can we eat with you?":
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, the studio certainly wasn't peaceful with them around. Most of the human actors were clearly bothered by them (although toons like Bugs and Daffy seemed to be more lenient to the Warners). It wouldn't have been like that if the Warners were sane. Sure they're kids (toon kids on top of that) so they probably still would've ran around and misbehaved here and there regardless, but not to the extent that they're known for.
The Warners made people afraid of going to work, and probably stalled if not halted production of a lot of what the studio was working on (Plotz even says "The Warners had single-handed brought this studio to a screeching halt.") The studio would've saved themselves a lot of trouble if they had given Lon more time, prioritised their worker over money.
But they didn't.
Watching this episode, it feels like writers were trying to get that message across. That the studio deserved to have to deal with Warners; that they were the consequences for partaking in crunch culture. The Warners had been serving large doses of karma for almost a full season at that point, only this time, their "special friend" wasn't just one person.
It was the corrupt industry that birthed them in the first place.

wow you really love disney metafiction
Well yes Who Framed Roger Rabbit always fascinated me as a kid, what adaptions would our world have what would change if our characters really existed and lived beside us would Disney be as greedy as it is if Mickey Mouse was actually owner over it it instead of Bob Iger being CEO nd Investors having their claws in it? Would Bugs be the owner of Warner or would he be chilling as an A-list celebrity who is a known as a beloved LGBTQA Drag Queen and Genderfluid Veteran?
Mickey and Minnie married off screen and dating on screen?
Looney Tunes known as chaos incarnate but they're a giant family
Bugs and Daffy adopted the Animaniacs because they had no home
Are Bugs and Daffy together off screen?
What would shape each toon into their On Screen and off-screen selves creating that divide?
What would the huge differences be? Maybe some have kids others are married and some have entire seperate family?
How would humans react to these guys as a species that has a bad record of looking down upon people?
Mickey and Bob Iger having a I absolutely despise you but I have to tolerate you relationship
Off screen the Warner siblings are actually related to Oswald and Ortensia explaining the Animaniacs' strange unidentifiable appearances,
Like the possibilities are endless and vast, there's just so much unexplored due to the fact companies can't share at all anymore and they don't think live action hybrids are useful
Chip and Dale 2022 resparked it for me, a lot of ideas going a million miles, like if I had finances I'd be getting reference shots to use for test fan animation just for the fun of it, cause it fascinates me that much,
And while you call it metafiction it's actually just cartoons meeting our reality seriously go check out the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit that movie right there shows what exactly I'm talking about and here I'll even include some screenshots of a couple films that do this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bugs Bunny Focus for Back in Action cuz honestly I think this is his most iconic look besides the Viking look when it comes to his drag and honestly the line normally I play the love interest is just amazing
Roger and Eddie(played by Bob Hoskins) in Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the adaption I was talking about earlier look at Ellie next to the apartment building for small toons. She's as tall as it, while Chip and Dale are the perfect size for it, unlike Who Framed Roger rabbit Chip and Dale takes place in the modern day that's what hooked me to create a modern AU it's all so fascinating,
Tumblr media
You can't see it in that shot but Dale is driving a full-blown human sized car that has been adapted for Chipmunks I'm not joking, however their movie shows how wildly different everybody can look from each other especially in the modern day when CG is a thing. Chip is still clearly 1990s 2D animated while Dale decided to get a CGI redesign
Like if Mickey and Minnie are only two feet tall and if he's the big boss on set yeah it's really funny to me to imagine him running around Disney and trying to picture every single Studio adapting to these Toons and their various size differences
Again there is just so so much that has been untapped with this genre, because Studios cannot get along long enough to tap into it

In the quiet town of Acme Falls, a peculiar silence had settled. The usual bustle of the marketplace, the laughter of children playing, the distant hum of blacksmiths at work—all had vanished. Above, the clouds hung low and grey as snow drifted gently, as if mourning the loss of the vibrant life that once filled the streets. The town square stood desolate, the cobblestones cold and untouched by the warmth of human feet. A statue of the evil that once ruled stood as hard as stone as it is. King Salazar, the former ruler, had left all of the Kingdom of Warnerstock to rot. All the living had all perished under Salazar's cruel regime of overtaxation and neglect. Even though he was now behind bars by the guards who turned on him before they left to another kingdom, his legacy remained etched in the lifeless stones of the decaying kingdom.
In a grave, was all the lives that were squeezed out for the rest of eternity. The one that stood above the rest were the Warner siblings, Wakko, Yakko, and Dot. Because of the tragedy, they have some of the many young lives that were gone too soon. But as the clock struck midnight, something strange began to stir in the graveyard. The earth trembled gently, and a soft light began to emanate from the ground beneath the siblings' resting place. A ghostly figure emerged, a woman with a voice so beautiful it could make the angels weep. She began to sing.
Ghost Woman: Come little children I'll take thee away Into a land of enchantment Come little children The time's come to play Here in my garden of shadows
Her beautiful voice has waken the ghosts of the Warners. As they got up tiredly, they were stunned to see the ghost woman. Enchanted and captivated by her singing, they got up from their graves and began to follow the ghost as she continued to sing and walk around the graveyard.
Ghost Woman: Follow sweet children I'll show thee the way Through all the pain and the sorrows
Soon, the ghosts of a toddler and her dog awaken. The ghost woman walks past two graves before a hippopotamus couple rise up from sleep from the singing along with the spirit of an oversized chicken.
Ghost Woman: Weep not poor children For life is this way Murdering beauty and passions
The ghosts of two mice and a horse wake up by the singing. The spirits of you mink and two squirrels wake up and began to follow the ghost women.
Ghost Women: Hush now dear children, it must be this way Too weary of life and deceptions Rest now my children For soon we'll away Into the calm and the quiet
Soon, all of the ghosts of the stolen lives, babies, children, teens, and elders, began to rise from their graves an follow the woman as they begin to fly into the sky that slowly became starry eyed. The siblings looked around, their eyes wide with wonder as they saw the diverse assembly of ghosts that had been drawn to the woman's haunting melody. They recognized the faces of friends and neighbors, long gone, now just whispers of their former selves. The ghost woman's song grew louder as they continued to follow her to a better place, and a strange warmth filled their spectral hearts. It was a feeling they hadn't felt in what seemed like an eternity—hope.
Ghost Woman: Come little children I'll take thee away Into a land of enchantment Come little children The time's come to play Here in my garden of shadows
She leads all the ghosts into the shining moon, where they will finally be truly put to rest. They may be gone, but they aren’t forgotten. They weeped in their sleep, but they found peace once again. The kingdom may have rotted, but hope is found.

Kaiju Weeks in Review (August 6-26, 2023)
Tumblr media
Godzilla: War for Humanity's first issue has already grabbed my interest, juggling a huge monster cast and an eccentric defense team. The new monster, Zoospora, is an impressive creation, and I think the Godzilla Island formula of "a new threat starts attacking Earth's monsters one by one" will work well here. Also, it's got the long-overdue IDW debut of Minilla! Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #2 doesn't give me much to talk about in comparison, apart from my delight at the Moby Dick cameo. Right, Godzilla destroying the Spanish Armada, we've all seen it.
Tumblr media
Apple TV+ has finally revved up the marketing machine for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, releasing a few stills of the cast (Godzilla included) and offering a Fall 2023 premiere date. Some longstanding rumors have been confirmed as well. Bill Randa, John Goodman's character in Kong: Skull Island, will appear in flashbacks to the 1950s, played by Anders Holm. Anna Sawai plays Cate Randa (probably his granddaughter). Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt play Lee Shaw, Shaw being the name of a founding Monarch member in the first Monsterverse graphic novel, Godzilla: Awakening. Few plot details are available yet, but here's the logline:
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.
The other Monsterverse news from the past three weeks is that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has been pushed back slightly to April 12. Dune: Part 2 occupies its old slot on the calendar; Warner Bros. would rather starve theaters again than pay the actors it needs to promote the film what they're worth, I guess.
Tumblr media
Add Kaiju Brooklyn to the list of North American kaiju conventions. Right now details are largely limited to what's on this poster; they also recently announced that Dope Pope will be among the artists. Wish I could spare the funds to go, but I think it's coming up too soon.
youtube
GAMERA -Rebirth- is almost out, and as part of its final marketing push, Kadokawa is releasing short behind-the-scenes videos on each of the monsters. So far we've gotten Gamera (above), Gyaos, and Jiger. Wish they were translated, but I'll take what I can get from a streaming show.

What if in Bendy x TFP, MECH (Gent) abducted the kids and turned them into ink creatures? Maybe Lost Ones, or even perfect cartoon characters?
Raf would be a perfect Bendy, Jack a Boris, and Miko could be Alice, but she makes me think more of Miss Twisted.
How to piss off Bendy and have Ratchet devolve into a mess trying to fix this.
IF this does happen, then the members of GENT that were integrated into MECH had done this behind Silas back. The kids were taken from their homes while Bendy was being looked over by Ratchet that night. He immediately sensed the ink stirring alongside three way too familiar souls straining to not get added to the collection.
Bendy forcefully merged with Ratchet into Beast Bendy and went straight to the base in question much to the other bots' concern. The transformation for the kids been interrupted but the damage was still done. Jack had Boris traits such as the ears, large blots of skin in a halfway transition to ink wolf hide, and a partial Warner siblings(Yakko/Wakko/Dot) muzzle.
Raf had a mix between his clothes alongside Bendy's, large horns, the popular smile, then finally his right arm mimicking the character's completely. Miko escaped with the least change since she fought the process the most. Half formed halo, horns, her shirt being mixed with Alice's, least amount of ink skin covering her lower arms, ponytail, and legs. You can say that MECH alongside almost everyone inside didn't last long.
The bots were horrified when Beast Bendy reappears with the changed kids and information on what had occur. Luckily not all of the Jasper Trio's original bodies were consumed by the ink. That meant changing them back to human is possible but the process would be extremely difficult.
At best, their case becomes similar to Wilson. They remain in human form but will revert if either kid comes into contact with enough ink. Bendy's connection to the ink is their only saving grace from not melting to inky puddles completely or devolve into Lost Ones/Searchers.
No one was having a good time at all.

Masterpost Incoming in 3, 2, 1...
Tumblr media
So, just as the profile blurb goes. I'm Factor, or Sam, doesn't really matter which. Turns I've actually put out quite a bit of content, so this soon-to-be-pinned post is like a table of contents for all that stuff.
Gonna try to keep this in chronological order, most recent to least. Anything that I have purged from the web will not be included, so do not ask.
Aftereffects
Status: Complete.
Fandom: Super Mario Bros.
After overcoming a powerful curse, Mario’s left with zero memory of what happened, but plenty of physical reminders that something absolutely did.
Based on @wahooitsamee's Ancient Koopa AU, where Mario's dealing with becoming a half-human, half-Koopa hybrid and the changes and insecurities that come with that.
Part 1: Tarragon, Tails, and Koopa Scales

It’s been a week and a half since Kamek cast a terrible curse, and Mario’s still having a hard time feeling okay with himself. What's a kingdom to do except lift his spirits?

TW: sexual content
Click this link to go right to AO3.
It’s been a month since the curse was calmed, but Mario’s still holding Peach out at arm’s length when it comes to bedtime endeavors. What is a Princess to do, then, when her love wakes up feverish and clinging to her for dear life?
Figure out what's going on, of course.
Part 3: Sparks and Butterflies

Anyways this was just a ploy for me to show u my main Clubs au!! Where she emerged on the same earth as the warners were created, and becomes their older sib figure/babysitter/cool cousin!! Details under the cut!!
When she emerged, she had the vague idea/knowledge that she was supposed to be an entertainer for one specific blue gem, same species as her. She understood the limits of her body(so wasn't scared by poofing or stretching, altho it took her a bit to get the hang of her spinel abilities), and the thought of serving one person forever without a second thought of anything new or nice for her terrified her. She bounced between human families, learning about humans and animals and their needs, the flora or earth, etc. Let them believe she was a human or magic creature, left if they tried to hurt her, became a well known babysitter in one neighborhood.
Took a comedy course, dabbled in stand-up, had SO much fun in improv, loves slapstick the most but anti-jokes & absurtist humor the best--until she's introduced to puns, which quickly become zer new favorite despite her never understanding them the first time she hears/sees them.
Did freelance acting while the warners made their debut, became fast friends w them & was an extra or backup(due to shapeshifting abilities, which they stopped revealing/telling to ppl once the police tried some bullshit to catch zer and got innocents hurt) in a lot of their shows! She learned reality-bending toon abilities from the warners ('teleporting' behind ppl, hammerspace instead of gem storage, pulling up & down "backgrounds" to change places, etc). The warners stayed in different places during their acting prime, but they preferred to sleep in the warner tower. Clubs came along to check there when they didn't show up for their weekly lunch together, ripped the door off the tower in a rage upon learning they were trapped in there, and then they were on the run for a long long while. At one point the warners pretended to be trapped in the tower but would sneak out regularly or have Clubs bring them food/water/other amenities.
Once they "escape" again in the 90s, clubs is threatened to be locked away for her years & years & years of crimes for the wellbeing of her siblings/kids/cousins, unless she accepts a new contract and commits no more crimes. She does not (get caught) do(ing) more crimes, and so does episodes for the 90s run of the show, and then they have an adventure in the su universe once that run of the show ends. And then come back for the reboot, after which they declare themselves public domain & do crossover adventures :]

Thoughts on Season 3
Yeah, I know, I'm late to the party. I watched this season weekly (except for episode 8, which I watched the same week as episode 1-I wasn't about to wait 8 weeks to see the CG episode) because screw binge culture I feel that’s just how Animaniacs should be watched (although daily works too). This won't be a review of each episode, just a list of random thoughts I had about the season:
—I already thought Titmouse's animation for the show was phenomenal, but it somehow managed to look even better in “Season 3 and WB”! And it’s always great to see more Nora. If Animaniacs does make another comeback I hope they don’t only stick with characters from the original series (plus some inevitable new ones) because nOsTaLGiA. It would suck if we never saw Nora or Julia or anyone from the reboot again.
—It’s nice to see certain catchphrases be brought back, like Wakko’s “Faboo!” and Dot’s “Boys.” Although it’s almost like a monkey’s paw situation, because Yakko doesn’t say “Goodnight Everybody!” at all this season. Not even once. Has that happened thoughout an entire season of Animaniacs...ever? This isn’t a complaint (it doesn’t really matter), but it’s surprising.
--OK, Cindy's officially my third favourite recurring character the reboot introduced. I'm glad her and Starbox got more segments this season, I like them a little more now!
—I like how “Soda-pressed” and “The Island of Dr Warneau” give insight as to what would happen if the Warners were the perfectly behaved, compliant, innocent children the studio always wanted them to be-they'd be miserable, like GiGi and the clones. The Warners may be chaotic and mess about a lot but at least they have a backbone.
--After "Planet Warner" I wonder how many toons in-universe are rejected pitches...it's gotta be ALOT. I liked the reference to "Opportunity Knox" in Talladega Mice (even the usually narcissistic Brain had to admit that plan was poorly thought out), especially since it's usually the Warners who reference their adventures in the original show, whilst Pinky and the Brain almost never reference their past adventures in the original show or their spin off in the reboot. Also, "D.I.Why?" is gonna be stuck in my head for ages, particularly Wakko's verse.
--I REALLY wish "Fantasy" and "Teeniacs" were longer instead of being cold opens. A Warners/Pinky and the Brain crossover and the Warners in high school? I would've watched an entire half hour each of both of those! As they are, they're both still good though.
—There are six Warner siblings now. Sorry I don’t make the rules.
Tumblr media
(Seriously though, the clones were so cute! And I commend the segment for having a great moral about cutting out toxic family members.)
--Fun fact, "Global Warnering" was supposed to be in season 2! It's nice to see the Warners go up against another toon/talking animal again, it felt like pretty much all of the "special friends" in the reboot before season 3 were humans. They were mostly humans in the original show too, but some were talking animals. Also my goodness was "Here Comes The Sea!" catchy. Pretty brutal that the Warners basically kill the guy at the end...but let's be honest he deserved it.
--It's nice to know that canonically Brain did feel guilty over what he did to Julia. Ironic that in trying to deal with his feelings of guilt be ends up repeating the same mistake as before-trying to have complete control of Julia, just In a less overt way. I've seen people say that this was an awful thing to do and his way of dealing with it doesn't make sense because it doesn't actually fix anything but...I'm pretty sure that was the point you guys. Brain's an emotionally unintelligent narcissistic control freak, and always has been. In the spin off he once referred to himself crying as his eyes leaking. What Brain does get is math and science-so he did the only thing he knew. He's not in touch with his emotions and is content with sticking with what he knows doing the same things over and over again, which of course leads to him making the same mistakes. Meanwhile, Julia is in touch with her emotions and is willing to change. Julia's his foil, this whole storyline is basically deconstructing Brain as a character. The only thing I don't get is why is he in love with her? I'm glad the feelings clearly aren't reciprocated, but last time he met a mouse that seemingly became as smart as him (Billie) that was a turn off for him. Or maybe he IS at least a little threatened by Julia's intelligence and that's why he programmed her to be a housewife?
--Basically, I do have some issues with the Julia storyline (as funny as she is they could've done something more interesting and nuanced than turning her into a Saturday Morning Cartoon villain, I could do without Brain actually having feelings for her, and I think her trying to take Pinky away from Brain because she genuinely thinks he'd be better off without him would have been more interesting than her basically ignoring Pinky most of the time) but showcasing Brain's flaws isn't one of them. I'm glad the real Julia showed up in episode 7, would've sucked if what's unfortunately probably gonna be her last appearance in anything ever technically didn't even have her appear. I'll admit I don't really see the point of having two Julias now but I'm guessing they would've done something cool with that plotline. Maybe one day they will! Hopefully the idea for season 4 was that Brain would finally attempt to make things right for real.
--I liked episode 8 overall, but yeah that first scene sucked. I'm not gonna debate this with anyone in the comments-I don't like it. Not just the comments about Wakko, the "boomer" joke and the "lol girls don't play video games!" joke in 2023 were pretty lame. But I'm not gonna rant about it, plenty of people have already. That being said, the Warners looked great in CG, and the rest of the episode was actually funny. They even referenced the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Game Boy Animaniacs game and got a studio (Flystudio) who actually worked on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to do the 3D animation!
--Also, did not expect Starbox and Cindy of all things to get some sense of closure, with it seeming like Starbox will eventually warm up to living with Cindy. Yeah there's that cliff-hanger...but the clone will probably end up like the last one lol.
--One of the scientists who conducted the "Learned Helplessness" experiment on Brain appears near the beginning of episode 9. I swear he even has more white hairs now, neat detail. Also, I guess Yakko being lactose-intolerant is now officially a constant thing in canon and not just a random gag, that's cool. "How The Brain Thieved Christmas" was fine, but Brain is basically learning the same thing he learned in the original PatB Christmas special. That dub-step remix of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" was unexpected but awesome, and "We Could Try to Do It, Santa" was great too!
--If "Some of Humanity's Wins" ends up being the last full Animaniacs song we ever get (with the Warners' og voices at least), then that's not a bad song to go out on, I like the optimistic message! And I'm so glad to hear Sherri Stoner as Slappy again, she literally sounds the same as she did decades ago, that's amazing. Slappy being retired makes way too much sense.
--So...about that ending. Apparently the meteor was more of a metaphor wasn't meant to be taken too literally. Even if you ignore what Gabe Swarr said on Twitter about how the Warners survived (plus Everyday Safety likely being an in-universe filmed sketch anyway), Yakko has outright said he's impervious to physical harm in "Yakko Amakko" and Wakko said they're immortal in "WARnerGAMES". So I'm just gonna assume the Warners are fine. And although it does technically count as a downer ending, the comedic timing of the meteor's impact was too good for me to hate it. And hey, unlike the original series there was no implication they'd be locked up in the water tower this time so...yay...?
--Here's my ranking of the episodes (from best to worst):
3, 7, 6, 10, 9, 5, 1, 8, 4, 2
I'll keep this last paragraph brief, this post is getting pretty long. The best moments in season 3 are some of the best of the reboot, period. I'm gonna miss this show, I wouldn't even be into Animaniacs without it, and it deserves to have more episodes.
I like to think maybe some day it will!

My thoughts on episode 7
SPOILERS for season 3, episode 7 of the Animaniacs reboot
The emotions of the past two days took my mind off of the isolated hell of my own creation, but now I'm starting to get antsy again. I'm also starting to feel the dread setting in that Animaniacs is about to end for me. I only have two new episodes that I haven't seen, and that's probably it forever. I have rarely in my life had a week with such deeply mixed emotions.
This episode was good. We finally got a third Warner song, and it only took 7 episodes. I still can't wrap my head around how it took so long, but at least the song was good.
I just thought they looked cute here at the very beginning, dying in the heat.
Tumblr media
I liked Wakko comforting his sister.
Tumblr media
I liked how BOTH little sibs got it wrong instead of Wakko being portrayed as the dumb one.
Tumblr media
This very brief shot was also cute to me, the Warners staying entertained on the trip by playing a little game together.
Tumblr media
I like how often I've seen their tails and fur get fluffed up in shock/fear this season. Makes them feel more alive. And it's cute, of course.
Tumblr media
Now we get into the song. I like how, despite how cynical they usually are, the Warners seem to genuinely care about this issue and got a little shocked at the depth of Josh Polar's callousness towards it.
Tumblr media
Gotta at least mention Yakko's dancing here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it did get me a little to see the genuine concern of Wakko's siblings here, it would hit much harder if I didn't know they were resuscitating him just to immediately celebrate his supposed death in the next episode. What happened, writers?
Tumblr media
The song really kicked into another gear at the end, which is what took it from good to great in my mind.
Tumblr media
Nice to see the sibs pulling out their Bugs Bunny antics. I would call him their mentor, but most people don't realize that the Warners are canonically older than Bugs Bunny, so technically they set the example for him, in-universe.
Tumblr media
I didn't really need the warning to know this was preachy, but I didn't mind it.
Tumblr media
Wakko saw his brother pull out a whole turkey, but his mind instead saw the energy efficient lightbulb to be a tastier snack. What a cute little enigma.
Tumblr media
The exchange about leftovers was genuinely great and totally in-character.
Tumblr media
And it's nice to see Yakko accepting Wakko's ignorance instead of beating him over the head with it like earlier in the reboot.
Tumblr media
Forget the impending and currently ongoing environmental catastrophes, forget the anarchic oncoming societal change, forget the impending doom of humanity, we need to pass green legislation to SAVE THE WARNERS!!!
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HOW THEY HOLD ONTO HIM! Dot sitting on his leg... babies.
This segment was good and the song was pretty great. Definitely slots in as my second favorite song of the season so far, after Do It Yourself.
Lawn in 60 Seconds reminded me of The Flame from the original series. Anthropomorphizing a small background object you'd never think to anthropomorphize.
Tumblr media
I already feel bad when I mow the lawn, and this segment didn't help. The grass and bugs who live there never asked to be savagely cut down by the lawn mower's blade, just for the purpose of humanity holding onto their perfectly manicured lawns!
All's Fair in Love and Door was interesting.
I liked that Pinky genuinely tried to listen to Brain and not go in the door, but he confused himself into doing it anyway.
Tumblr media
I thought the alternate reality concept was kind of creepy until I learned it wasn't the real Julia he had trapped in there. It's still pretty creepy, though, considering this Julia proved herself to be just as sentient as the real one... Can't Brain just leave it alone? Now you've messed up two different versions of the same person you created in the first place to serve your selfish emotional needs.
Tumblr media
I liked that Julia found out the truth on her own instead of Pinky spilling the beans.
Tumblr media
It was pretty cute how Brain tried to silently protect Pinky in the trashcan.
Tumblr media
Gay.
Tumblr media
At this point, though, I'm not sure they're going to go all the way with it. This would have been the perfect segment to do it in.
I'm not sure if this will ever amount to anything.
Tumblr media
It was an interesting segment that posed some deep moral questions on the nature of love and marriage. I think it could have been better if it went farther with things.
Cute Things That Can Kill You was a decent PSA, I guess. I'm pretty sure everyone was aware that pufferfish are deadly. That's like the whole reason they're a famous animal.
Tumblr media
The episode was pretty good. I would have liked it better if I didn't know what was coming next. Even though I've already seen it, it still fills me with a sense of dread just to see the thumbnail next on the docket. I'll probably post the official review of it tonight to get it over with, and then move onto episode 9 tomorrow and finish it up with episode 10 on Saturday. Then I'll be free and depressed simultaneously, just as you're supposed to be on social media.
This episode isn't as hard to rate as the other ones I've seen recently. It wasn't as good as my two favorites this season. It's about on par with episode 4, which is currently in third place. It's a hard call between them. I liked the Warner antics in episode 4, but this episode had a killer song and a more intriguing PATB segment. I probably have to give this one the nod.
My current ranking of season 3 episodes:
Episode 6
Episode 3
Episode 7
Episode 4
Episode 2
Episode 1
Episode 5
The list is splitting itself into clear parts. The top 2 are my absolute favorites, some of the best Animaniacs I've seen. The top 4 are all the episodes I'd consider legitimately good. The bottom 3 aren't bad, but had parts that made me go "meh." You might think it'll be an easy call on where to put episode 8, but I'm not sure. Most of that episode was actually good. It's just a few small parts that soured the entire episode, season, and show for me. Remove those parts and it'd definitely be up along with the top 4 in the "genuinely good" category. It's just that those parts also happened to have an indescribably huge negative emotional impact on me in general... I'll tackle that dilemma when I get there.
Feel free to add to the discussion of this episode if you want, but don't say anything about the episodes that come after. Thanks.
