I think one of my big deciding factors to tell if you’re annoying about music is if you don’t like this album. You know what that tells me, you don’t like fun, exciting, well produced, and hype music. Yeah maybe you just don’t dig the sound or something, but to be honest, almost everyone I’ve shown this to who’s isn’t just a rap or pop music hater loved it. And I love it.

Some pretentious motherfucker might tell you “ohh wahhh this isn’t as good as Kendrick” and it’s like no you’re wrong. It’s not trying to do the same thing. This isn’t trying to be fucking illmatic. You know what it’s trying to be, motherfucking crime mob, and it does. It does so fucking well. Every. God. Damn. Song. On this thing is so incredibly hype it makes me want to jump on my desk and dance. It’s so exciting so fucking high energy, the beats are so fucking heavy and catchy and creative, the flows are perfectly executed, the whole aesthetic of this thing is awesome.

A lot of you will probably have not listened to this album, just give it a shot. Just put on a few songs and let them do their thing. Don’t stuff this square peg into a circle hole. Let it be as good as it is.

It's the end of the year! What I usually do is listen to my favorite hype-me-up tracks and draw/game. Here are some tracks (all from games excluding the last one) that I love getting hyped to. I tried not to pick multiple tracks from a single game since I wouldn't have enough space for'em all.

what constitutes hype music (to meeee)?

I’m honestly quite curious to see how choice in “hype” music varies from person to person. For me, it goes a little something like this (if a song consists of one or more of the following attributes it probably gets my anxious, hyper brain amped to sit in a box all day and draw boring things all day, while thinking that what I’m drawing is absolute madly genius):

Up-tempo: Think ska / bluegrass speeds. Or at least something that can keep up with me running or something.

Constant, ever-present rhythm: Nice kicks, or at least fast kicks, if they aren’t all that nice. I’m a sucker for distortion, wherever it may lie.

“Pop”-leaning melodies: I don’t want anything that will be stuck in my head once the following song rolls around, but I do tend to enjoy getting hyped to songs with pleasant, hummable tunes.

Density: This often contradicts 2 and / or 3. Songs with ten or more (usually amorphous and clashing) instruments rile me up. They overload my brain to achieve this effect, or something.

Familiarity: Songs I’ve never heard don’t quite get my heart rate elevated. Probably has to do with knowing when good / intense parts of a song are getting close.

Maybe this list can be longer, if I think long(er) and hard(er). But I cannot be bothered to write any more than that just now.

In my years (like… 15?) of playing basketball, it seems like many people’s hype music of choice was modern rap / hip-hop. For this reason, this music, or at least those particular songs which I heard up until 2017 do very much get my adrenaline flowing. So, either this is a Pascal kind of thing, where listening to this music during warm-ups constantly eventually causes it to achieve the desired effect, or this is music that would have always gotten me hyped, if I had actually chosen to listen to it outside of only basketball.

What types of songs get you hyped? I’m genuinely curious. I promise I’m not just trying out some bullshit call-to-action Instagram marketing technique thing with this legitimate question. Do any of my preferred “hype attributes” match up with yours? Is there anyone out there who gets absolutely 1000% ready-to-run-a-marathon hyped by Gregorian chants? Maybe I’ll attempt to condition myself to be that person.
